하나님과 동역함

빌 애쉬는 1962년에 멕시코에 있는 한 고아원을 방문해서 풍차의 작은 펌프들을 고쳐주었습니다. 15 년 후 그는 어려운 마을에 깨끗한 물을 공급하는 것을 도와주는 일로 하나님을 섬기고 싶은 간절한 바람으로 비영리단체를 설립했습니다. 빌은 말했습니다. “하나님은 저를 일깨워 시골 빈민들에게 안전한 식수를 공급하려는 열망을 지닌 사람들을 찾아내어 ‘시간을 최대한 선용하라’고 하셨습니다.” 나중에 빌은 100개가 넘는 나라로부터 수많은 목사들과 복음전도자들을 통하여 전 세계적으로 안전한 식수가 필요하다는 것을 알게 되었고, 다른 사람들에게도 이 사역에 참여할 기회를 주었습니다.

WORKING WITH GOD

During his 1962 visit to Mexico, Bill Ashe helped fix windmill hand pumps at an orphanage. Fifteen years later, inspired by a deep desire to serve God by helping provide clean water to villages in need, Bill founded a nonprofit organization. He said, “God awoke me to ‘make the most of the time’ by finding others with a desire to bring safe drinking water to the rural poor.” Later, having learned about the global need for safe water through the requests of thousands of pastors and evangelists from more than 100 countries, Bill invited others to join the ministry’s efforts.

God welcomes us to team up to serve with Him and others in various ways. When the people of Corinth argued over which teachers they preferred, the apostle Paul affirmed his role as a servant of Jesus and a teammate of Apollos, fully dependent on God for spiritual growth (1 CORINTHIANS 3:1–7). He reminds us that all work has God-given value (V. 8). Acknowledging the privilege of working with others while serving Him, Paul encourages us to build each other up as He transforms us in love (V. 9).

Though our mighty Father doesn’t need our help to accomplish His great works, He equips us and invites us to partner with Him. XOCHITL DIXON

오직 믿음

삼백 명의 아이들이 옷을 차려 입고 앉아서 아침 식사를 주신 하나님께 감사의 기도를 드리고 있었습니다. 하지만 아이들 앞에는 아무런 음식이 없었습니다! 고아원을 운영하고 있는 선교사 조지 뮬러에게 이런 일은 자주 있는 일이었습니다. 그러나 이 상황은 하나님께서 어떻게 공급해 주시는지 알게 해주는 기회이기도 했습니다. 뮬러가 기도한지 몇 분 안 되어 간밤에 잠을 이루지 못한 제빵사가 고아원의 문을 두드렸습니다. 그는 고아원에 빵이 필요할 거라고 생각되어 세 바구니나 되는 빵을 간밤에 만들었던 것입니다. 조금 후에는 우유장수가 나타났습니다. 그의 손수레가 고아원 앞에서 고장 나는 바람에 우유가 상하는 것을 원치 않은 그는 뮬러에게 우유를 모두 주었습니다.

우리가 잘 지내는데 필요한 자원인 음식과 집, 건강, 재정, 친구들이 없을 때, 염려나 걱정, 자기 연민 등을 한바탕 치르는 것은 정상적인 일입니다. 그런데 열왕기상 17:8-16 말씀은 하나님의 도움이 “나는 떡이 없고 다만 통에 가루 한 움큼과 병에 기름 조금 뿐이라”(12절)고 말한 가난한 과부처럼, 전혀 예상하지 못한 방법으로 올 수 있다는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다. 그 이전에 엘리야에게 공급해준 것은 까마귀였습니다(4–6절). 우리는 부족한 것을 채우려고 염려함으로 여러 갈래로 길을 찾아 나설 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님께서 우리의 필요를 채워주시겠다고 약속하신 공급자시라는 것을 분명히 알면 자유로울 수 있습니다. 우리 스스로 해결책을 찾기 전에, 먼저 하나님을 찾는데 주의를 기울일 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그러면 시간과 힘을 절약할 수 있고 좌절하지 않을 수 있습니다.

ONLY TRUST

Three hundred children were dressed and seated for breakfast, and a prayer of thanks was offered for the food. But there was no food! Situations like this were not unusual for orphanage director and missionary George Mueller (1805–1898). Here was yet another opportunity to see how God would provide. Within minutes of Mueller’s prayer, a baker who couldn’t sleep the night before showed up at the door. Sensing that the orphanage could use the bread, he had made three batches. Not long afterward, the town milkman appeared. His cart had broken down in front of the orphanage. Not wanting the milk to spoil, he offered it to Mueller.

It’s normal to experience bouts of worry, anxiety, and self-pity when we lack resources essential to our well-being—food, shelter, health, finances, friendships. First Kings 17:8–16 reminds us that God’s help can come through unexpected sources like a needy widow. “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug” (V. 12). Earlier it was a raven that provided for Elijah (VV. 4–6). Concerns for our needs to be met can send us searching in many directions. A clear vision of God as the Provider who has promised to supply our needs can be liberating. Before we seek solutions, may we be careful to seek Him first. Doing so can save us time, energy, and frustration. ARTHUR JACKSON

적인가, 우리 편인가?

RIVALS OR ALLIES?

The city of Texarkana sits squarely on the state border between Texas and Arkansas. The city of 70,000 inhabitants has two mayors, two city councils, and two police and fire departments. The cross-town sporting rivalry between high schools draws an uncommonly high attendance, reflecting the deep allegiance each has to their own state’s school. More significant challenges arise as well, such as disputes over the shared water system, governed by two sets of state laws. Yet the town is known for its unity despite the line that divides it. Residents gather annually for a dinner held on State Line Avenue to share a meal in celebration of their oneness as a community.

The believers in Corinth may not have drawn a line down their main thoroughfare, but they were divided. They’d been quarreling as a result of their allegiances to those who taught them about Jesus: Paul, Apollos, or Cephas (Peter). Paul called them all to oneness “in mind and thought” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:10), reminding them it was Christ who was crucified for them, not their spiritual leaders.

We behave similarly today, don’t we? We sometimes oppose even those who share our singularly important belief—Jesus’ sacrifice for our wrongdoings—making them rivals instead of allies. Just as Christ Himself is not divided, we, as His earthly representation—His body—mustn’t allow differences over nonessentials to divide us. Instead, may we celebrate our oneness in Him. REFINED IN THE FIRE

Twenty-four-karat gold is nearly 100 percent gold with few impurities. But that percentage is difficult to achieve. Refiners most commonly use one of two methods for the purification process. The Miller process is the quickest and least expensive, but the resulting gold is only about 99.95 percent pure. The Wohlwill process takes a little more time and costs more, but the gold produced is 99.99 percent pure.

In Bible times, refiners used fire as a gold purifier. Fire caused impurities to rise to the surface for easier removal. In his first letter to believers in Jesus throughout Asia Minor (northern Turkey), the apostle Peter used the gold-refining process as a metaphor for the way trials work in the life of a believer. At that time, many believers were being persecuted by the Romans for their faith in Christ. Peter knew what that was like firsthand. But persecution, Peter explained, brings out the “genuineness of [our] faith” (1 PETER 1:7).

Perhaps you feel like you’re in a refiner’s fire—feeling the heat of setbacks, illness, or other challenges. But hardship is often the process by which God purifies the gold of our faith. In our pain we might beg God to quickly end the process, but He knows what’s best for us, even when life hurts. Keep connected to the Savior, seeking His comfort and peace. LINDA WASHINGTON

충분히 큰

손자가 롤러코스터 줄로 달려가 키 제한 표지판에 등을 대고 서서 자기가 탈 수 있는지 재어보았습니다. 아이는 머리가 제한선을 넘어서자 소리치며 좋아했습니다.

우리 삶에는 충분히 “커야만” 가능해지는 것들이 아주 많습니다. 그렇지 않습니까? 어린이용 카시트에서 안전벨트로 옮기는 것. 뒷좌석에서 앞좌석으로 옮기는 것. 운전면허 시험을 치르는 것. 투표하는 것. 그리고 결혼하는 것. 내 손자처럼, 우리도 자라기를 갈망하며 평생을 보낼 수도 있습니다.

신약 시대에 아이들은 사랑은 받았지만 “나이가 차서” 가사에 보탬이 되고 성인의 특권으로 회당에 들어갈 수 있을 때까지는 사회에서 대수롭지 않게 여겨졌습니다. 예수님은 가난한 사람들, 병든 사람들, 나아가 아이들까지 반기심으로 당시의 기준을 깨뜨리셨습니다. 세 복음서(마태, 마가, 누가복음)는 예수님이 아이들에게 손을 얹고 위해서 기도할 수 있도록 부모들이 어린아이들을 예수님께 데려왔다고 말합니다(마태복음 19:13; 마가복음 10:16).

BIG ENOUGH

My grandson ran to the roller coaster line and stood with his back against the height-requirement sign to see if he was big enough to ride. He squealed with joy when his head exceeded the mark. So much of life is about being “big” enough, isn’t it? To move from car seat to seatbelt and from the back seat to the front. To take a driver’s test. To vote. To get married. Like my grandson, we can spend our lives longing to grow up.

In New Testament times, children were loved but not highly valued in society until they “became of age” and could contribute to the home and enter the synagogue with adult privileges. Jesus shattered the standards of His day by welcoming the impoverished, the diseased, and even children. Three gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) tell of parents bringing little children to Jesus so that He might lay hands on them and pray for them (MATTHEW 19:13; MARK 10:16).

The disciples rebuked the adults for what they saw as an inconvenience. At this, Jesus was “indignant” (MARK 10:14) and opened His arms to the little ones. He elevated their value in His kingdom and challenged all to become like children themselves—to embrace their vulnerability and need for Him in order to know Him (LUKE 18:17). It’s our childlike need that makes us “big” enough to receive His love. ELISA MORGAN

진정한 사랑과 마주침

노라는 작은 체구의 여인이었습니다. 그러나 공격적인 태도에다 키가 6피트(183센티미터)나 되는 여인인 “브리짓”이 못마땅한 듯 자기를 내려다보는데도 노라는 겁내지 않았습니다. “아이를 지우기로” 마음을 먹었지만 자기가 왜 임신 응급센터에 왔는지 말도 꺼내지 못하고 있었습니다. 그래서 노라가 부드럽게 질문을 했으나 브리짓은 심한 욕설로 무례하게 노라의 질문들을 무시했습니다. 그리고는 곧 가려고 일어나면서 어쨌든 아이를 지우겠다고 도전적으로 선언했습니다.

노라는 자신의 작은 몸을 문과 브리짓 사이에 밀어 넣으며 “떠나기 전에 제가 당신을 안아주고 당신을 위해 기도해도 될까요?”라고 물었습니다. 그때까지 불순한 의도 말고는 안아준 사람이 아무도 없었던 브리짓이었습니다. 갑자기 예기치 않았던 눈물이 흘렀습니다.

노라는 “영원한 사랑으로”(예레미야 31:3) 그분의 백성 이스라엘을 사랑하신 우리 하나님의 마음을 아름답게 보여주었습니다. 그 백성들은 하나님의 가르침을 지속적으로 어겨서 어려운 일을 겪고 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들에게 “내가 인자함으로 너를 이끌었다...... 내가 다시 너를 세우리라”(3-4절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

브리짓의 과거는 복잡합니다. (우리 중에도 많은 사람이 비슷한 경험을 했을 것입니다.) 그날 진정한 사랑을 만나보기 전까지 그녀는 하나님과 하나님을 믿는 사람들은 자기를 정죄만 할 것이라고 믿었습니다. 그런 그녀에게 노라는 다른 것을 보여주었습니다. 상상할 수 없을 만큼 우리를 사랑하시기 때문에 우리의 죄를 못 본 척하지 않으시는 하나님 말입니다. 하나님은 두 팔 벌려 우리를 맞아주십니다. 우리는 계속 달아날 필요가 없습니다.

RUNNING INTO LOVE

Nora was tiny, but “Bridget”—the belligerent, six-foot-tall woman glowering down at her—didn’t intimidate her. Bridget couldn’t even say why she had stopped at the crisis pregnancy center; she’d already made up her mind to “get rid of this . . . kid.” So Nora gently asked questions, and Bridget rudely deflected them with profanity-laced tirades. Soon Bridget got up to leave, defiantly declaring her intent to end her pregnancy.

Slipping her small frame between Bridget and the door, Nora asked, “Before you go, may I give you a hug, and may I pray for you?” No one had ever hugged her before—not with healthy intentions, anyway. Suddenly, unexpectedly, the tears came.

Nora beautifully reflects the heart of our God who loved His people Israel “with an everlasting love” (JEREMIAH 31:3). The people had stumbled into the hard consequences of their persistent violation of His guidelines. Yet God told them, “I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. I will build you up again” (VV. 3–4).

Bridget’s history is complex. (Many of us can relate.) Until she ran into real love that day, her belief had been that God and His followers would only condemn her. Nora showed her something different: the God who won’t ignore our sin because He loves us beyond imagination. He welcomes us with open arms. We don’t have to keep running. TIM GUSTAFSON

희망의 꽃

필라델피아 시내의 잡초가 무성했던 공터들이 깨끗이 정리되고 아름다운 꽃과 나무들로 환해지자 인근 주민들의 정신 건강도 전반적으로 밝아졌습니다. 경제적으로 힘들어했던 사람들이 특히 더 그렇게 되었습니다.

겨우 몇 송이의 꽃이 우리의 희망을 다시 살릴 수 있을까요? 선지자는 그렇다고 했습니다. 우리에게 희망을 주시는 하나님도 그렇다고 말씀하십니다.

HOPE BLOSSOMS

In the city of Philadelphia, when weedy vacant lots were cleaned up and brightened with beautiful flowers and trees, nearby residents also brightened in overall mental health. This proved especially true for those who struggled economically.

“There’s a growing body of evidence that green space can have an impact on mental health,” said Dr. Eugenia South, “and that’s particularly important for people living in poorer neighborhoods.” South, a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, is coauthor of a study on the subject.

The downtrodden people of Israel and Judah found fresh hope in the prophet Isaiah’s vision of their beautiful restoration by God. Amid all the doom and judgment Isaiah foretold, this bright promise took root: “The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy” (ISAIAH 35:1–2).

No matter our situation today, we too can rejoice in the beautiful ways our heavenly Father restores us with fresh hope, including through His creation. When we feel down, reflecting on His glory and splendor will bolster us. “Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way,” Isaiah encouraged (V. 3).

Can a few flowers rekindle our hope? A prophet said yes. So does our hope-giving God. PATRICIA RAYBON

매우 큰 일

보안 요원이 문이 닫히지 않게 붙여놓은 테이프를 발견하고 떼어냈습니다. 그가 나중에 문을 확인했을 때 테이프가 다시 붙어 있는 것을 발견하고는 경찰에 신고했습니다. 경찰이 와서 다섯 명의 도둑을 체포했습니다.

미국의 한 주요 정당의 본부인 워싱턴 디씨의 워터게이트 건물에서 일하던 이 젊은 보안 요원은 그저 자기의 일을 진지하게 받아들이고 충실히 해냄으로써 그의 평생에 가장 큰 정치 스캔들을 적발해낸 것입니다.

느헤미야는 예루살렘 성벽 재건축을 아주 진지하게 여기고 일을 시작했습니다. 그 일이 끝나갈 무렵 이웃의 대적들이 가까운 마을에서 만나자고 했습니다. 이는 친근한 초대를 가장한 은밀한 덫이었습니다(느헤미야 6:1-2). 그렇지만 느헤미야의 반응은 그의 깊은 신념을 보여줍니다. “내가 이제 큰 역사를 하니 내려가지 못하겠노라 어찌하여 역사를 중지하게 하고 너희에게로 내려가겠느냐”(3절).

느헤미야는 분명 어느 정도 권위는 있었겠지만 영웅 수준으로 아주 높게 인정받지는 않았을지도 모릅니다. 그는 위대한 전사도, 시인이나 선지자도, 왕이나 현자도 아니었습니다. 그는 술 따르는 자였다가 지금은 계약을 맺고 온 사람이었습니다. 그러나 그는 하나님을 위해 꼭 필요한 일을 하고 있다고 믿었습니다. 우리도 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것을 진지하게 받아들이고, 그분의 능력과 공급하심으로 충실히 그 일을 감당할 수 있기를 소망합니다.

A GREAT WORK

The security guard found and removed a piece of tape that was keeping a door from clicking shut. Later, when he checked the door, he found it had been taped again. He called the police, who arrived and arrested five burglars.

Working at the Watergate building in Washington, D.C., the headquarters of a major political party in the US, the young guard had just uncovered the biggest political scandal of his lifetime simply by taking his job seriously—and doing it well.

Nehemiah began rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem—a task he took very seriously. Toward the end of the project, neighboring rivals asked him to meet with them in a nearby village. Under the guise of a friendly invitation was an insidious trap (NEHEMIAH 6:1–2). Yet Nehemiah’s response shows the depth of his conviction: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” (V. 3).

Although he certainly possessed some authority, Nehemiah may not have rated very high on the hero scale. He wasn’t a great warrior, not a poet or a prophet, not a king or a sage. He was a cupbearer-turnedcontractor. Yet he believed he was doing something vital for God. May we take seriously what He’s given us to do and do it well in His power and provision. GLENN PACKIAM

목적 있는 삶

“우리 휴가 간다!” 집 진입로를 빠져나가 여행의 첫발을 내디디면서 아내가 신이 나서 세 살 난 손자 오스틴에게 말했습니다. 그러자 꼬마 오스틴은 무언가 생각하는 얼굴로 아내를 쳐다보더니 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 휴가 가는 게 아니야. 임무 수행하러 가는 거야!”

손자가 “임무 수행”하러 간다는 개념을 어디서 들었는지는 알 수 없지만, 나는 그 말을 듣고 공항으로 운전해 가는 동안 곰곰이 생각해 보았습니다. ‘내가 휴가를 떠나 며칠간 휴식을 취할 때에도, 매순간 하나님과 함께하며 하나님을 위해 살기 위해 “임무 수행” 중인 것을 명심하고 있는가? 내가 하는 모든 일에서 주님을 섬길 것을 기억하고 있는가?’

바울 사도는 로마제국의 수도인 로마에 살고 있는 신자들에게 “부지런 하여 게으르지 말고 열심을 품고 주를 섬기라”(로마서 12:11)고 격려했습니다. 그의 요점은 예수님 안에서 우리는 목적을 가지고 열심을 다해 살아야 한다는 것이었습니다. 매우 평범한 순간까지도 기대하는 마음으로 하나님을 바라보며 그분의 목적을 위해 살 때 새로운 의미가 생깁니다.

비행기 좌석에 앉았을 때 나는 기도했습니다. “주님, 저는 당신의 것입니다. 이 여행에서 주님께서 저에게 어떤 일을 계획하시더라도 그것을 놓치지 않도록 도와주소서.”

매일 매일은 주님과 함께 영원히 중요한 임무를 수행하는 날입니다!

LIVING ON PURPOSE

“We’re going on vacation!” my wife enthusiastically told our three-year-old grandson Austin as we pulled out of the driveway on the first leg of our trip. Little Austin looked at her thoughtfully and responded, “I’m not going on vacation. I’m going on a mission!”

We’re not sure where our grandson picked up the concept of going “on a mission,” but his comment gave me something to ponder as we drove to the airport: As I leave on this vacation and take a break for a few days, am I keeping in mind that I’m still “on a mission” to live each moment with and for God? Am I remembering to serve Him in everything I do?

The apostle Paul encouraged the believers living in Rome, the capital city of the Roman Empire, to “never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (ROMANS 12:11). His point was that our life in Jesus is meant to be lived intentionally and with enthusiasm. Even the most mundane moments gain new meaning as we look expectantly to God and live for His purposes.

As we settled into our seats on the plane, I prayed, “Lord, I’m yours. Whatever you have for me to do on this trip, please help me not to miss it.”

하나님이 주신 이름

‘립타이드, 배트 걸, 점프 스타트.’ 이들 단어는 우리 가족이 해마다 참여하는 여름 수련회의 상담자들에게 붙여진 별명들입니다. 수련회에서 상담자의 동료들이 지어준 이런 별명은 주로 황당했던 사건이나 재미있는 버릇, 또는 좋아하는 취미를 가지고 만듭니다.

별명은 수련회뿐 아니라 성경에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 예수님은 야고보와 요한 사도에게 “우레의 아들”이라는 별명을 붙여주셨습니다 (마가복음 3:17). 성경에서 누군가 ‘스스로 별명을 붙이는 것은 흔치 않은 일인데, 나오미라는 여인은 남편과 두 아들이 죽었기 때문에 사람들에게 “괴로움”이란 뜻의 “마라”로 자신을 불러달라고 했습니다(룻기 1:20). 그녀는 하나님께서 자기의 인생을 쓰라리게 하셨다고 느꼈습니다(21절).

그러나 나오미가 자신에게 붙인 새 별명은 오래 가지 않았습니다. 가족을 잃은 엄청난 충격이 그녀의 인생의 끝이 아니었기 때문입니다. 처절한 상황 가운데서도 하나님은 사랑하는 며느리 룻을 통해 그녀를 축복하셔서 결국에는 룻이 재혼하여 아들을 낳아 나오미에게 다시 가족을 이루어주셨습니다.

우리가 경험한 어려움이나 저지른 실수 때문에 자신에게 “실패자”, “사랑받지 못할 자”와 같은 쓰라린 별명을 붙이고 싶은 마음이 들 때도 있겠지만 그런 별명들이 우리 삶의 끝은 아닙니다. 우리는 그런 꼬리표들을 하나님께서 우리 각자에게 붙여주신 “사랑한 자”(로마서 9:25)라는 이름으로 바꾸고, 아무리 힘들 때라도 하나님의 공급하시는 손길을 찾을 수 있습니다.

NAMED BY GOD

Riptide. Batgirl. Jumpstart. These are a few names given to counselors at the summer camp our family attends every year. Created by their peers, the camp nicknames usually derive from an embarrassing incident, a funny habit, or a favorite hobby.

Nicknames aren’t limited to camp—we even find them used in the Bible. For example, Jesus dubs the apostles James and John the “sons of thunder” (MARK 3:17). It’s rare in Scripture for someone to give themselves a nickname, yet it happens when a woman named Naomi asks people to call her “Mara,” which means “bitterness” (RUTH 1:20), because both her husband and two sons had died. She felt that God had made her life bitter (V. 21).

The new name Naomi gave herself didn’t stick, however, because those devastating losses were not the end of her story. In the midst of her sorrow, God had blessed her with a loving daughter-in-law, Ruth, who eventually remarried and had a son, creating a family for Naomi again.

Although we might sometimes be tempted to give ourselves bitter nicknames, like “failure” or “unloved,” based on difficulties we’ve experienced or mistakes we’ve made, those names are not the end of our stories. We can replace those labels with the name God has given each of us, “loved one” (ROMANS 9:25), and look for the ways He’s providing for us in even the most challenging of times. LISA M. SAMRA
