공동체 만들어 가기

남편 앨런의 학업을 위해 우리 부부는 미국의 반대편에 있는 필라델피아로 이사하기로 했습니다. 당시 나로서는 옮겨 갈 직장이 정해진 것도 아니 었고 학생 아파트 월세를 어떻게 감당할지 난감했었습니다. 우리가 떠나기 얼마 전 주일 날, 한 교인이 남편이 입학할 그 대학교 졸업생을 소개해 주어 저렴한 아파트 정보를 얻을 수 있었습니다. 또 출발 전에 직장 동료가 기독교 단체에서 일하는 분의 연락처를 알려주었습니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도에 응답해 주셨고 그분의 사람들을 통해 아파트와 일자리를 포함한 여러 기회를 열어 주셨습니다. 가족과 친구들이 이사를 도와주었고, 기도로 우리와 동행해 주었습니다.

전도서의 저자는 함께 살아가는 삶의 유익에 대해 말했습니다: “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은...”(4:9). 두 사람이 함께하면 더 많은 일을 할 수 있고, 어려움 속에서 서로 도와줄 수 있으며, 동반자가 될 수도 있고, 위험할 때도 보호 받을 수 있습니다(9–11절). 이어서 이렇게 말합니다. “세 겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라”(12절). 공동체는 훨씬 더 많은 유익을 줍니다. 더 많은 자원과 더 큰 지원을 제공합니다.

남편과 나는 우리가 떠나 온 공동체에서 큰 도움을 받았습니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리가 그 대도시에서 고향에 온 것처럼 편안하게 지낼 수 있는 새로운 공동체를 형성할 수 있도록 도와주셨습니다. 혹시 당신이 외롭게 느껴진다면 하나님께 친구, 교회 또는 함께 섬길 공동체를 만나게 해 달라고 기도해 보십시오.

MADE FOR COMMUNITY

When my husband, Alan, and I decided to move across the country to Philadelphia to further his education, I didn’t have a job lined up, and we had no idea how we would afford student housing. On a Sunday, shortly before we were to leave, a church acquaintance introduced us to a former student of the university Alan was to attend who knew of an affordable apartment. Then, before we left, a workmate gave me the name of a contact at a Christian ministry. God answered our prayers and gave us opportunities—including an apartment and a job—through His people. Friends and family helped us move and ushered us on with prayer.

The author of Ecclesiastes wrote about the benefits of not going through life alone: “Two are better than one” (4:9). Two get more work done, can help each other through struggles, offer companionship, and ward against danger (VV. 9-11). He went on to say, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (V. 12). A community has even greater benefits. More resources, more support.

Alan and I benefited from the community we left behind. And God helped us build a new community to help us feel at home in the big city. If you feel alone, ask God to help you find a friend, a good church, or a place to serve in a community.

영혼의 양식이신 예수님

내가 자란 아프리카계 미국인 가정에는 식사 메뉴에 종종 맛있는 영혼의 양식 “소울 푸드”가 있었습니다. 이 단어는 1960년 대 중반에 생겨났으며 당시 “소울”은 아프리카계 미국인의 문화를 표현하는 일반적인 단어였습니다. 소울 푸드는 후라이드 치킨, 치즈마카로니, 야채, 고구마, 옥수수빵 등 다양한 음식을 포함하고 있습니다. 디저트는 덤이었는데 그 중에서도 군침이 돌게 하는 것은 복숭아맛 코블러였습니다. 잔치가 따로 없습니다!

각 문화권마다 상에 올리는 잔치 음식은 다르겠지만, 음식을 먹어야 사람이 살 수 있다는 점에서 요한복음 6장 35절에 있는 예수님 말씀은 모든 사람에게 중요한 의미를 가집니다. “나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 사람은 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라.”

보통 사람이 이러한 주장을 했다면, 터무니없는 말로 들렸을 것입니다. 하지만 예수 그리스도는 바로 하나님의 아들이시기 때문에 이런 놀라운 주장을 하실 수 있었습니다. 예수님은 당장 눈에 보이는 이익만 추구하는 “표적을 찾는 사람들”(2, 14, 26, 30절)에게 단순히 배고픔을 채우는 일이 전부가 아님을 말씀하신 것입니다. 하나님의 아들 예수님이야말로 참 생명의 근원이시며(14:6) 생명을 지키시는 분이십니다. 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 모든 죄가 사해진다는 사실을 믿는 사람들은 누구나 그 분과 영원한 삶을 함께 살 수 있습니다(11:25-26). 예수님은 ‘우리 영혼이 꼭 필요로 하는 양식’입니다. 우리의 생명, 영적 양육, 그리고 진정한 만족은 오직 그분 안에서만 찾을 수 있습니다.

JESUS—FOOD FOR THE SOUL

In the African American home I was raised in, meals often included scrumptious “soul food.” The term originated in the mid-1960s when “soul” was a common term used to describe African American culture. Soul food menu items included fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, greens, sweet potatoes, corn bread, and more. Desserts were a bonus; the “tastebud-tickling” peach cobbler was the most satisfying to me. What a feast!

Feasting in different cultures looks different, but because food is essential for life, Jesus’ words in John 6:35 are significant for all people: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Such claims as these would be outrageous if they were made by a mere human being. But Jesus, the Christ, could make such astounding claims because He’s the very Son of God. He told “sign-seekers”— those seeking immediate, short-term benefit (SEE VV. 2, 14, 26, 30)—that satisfaction of physical hunger wasn’t enough. As the Son of God, Jesus is the source of true life (14:6) and the sustainer of life. All those who believe in Him for the forgiveness of sins through His death and resurrection (11:25-26) share His life. Jesus is the essential food for the soul. Life, nourishment, and true satisfaction are found in Him alone.

명판에는 “하나님께서 지으신 아름다운 그림에 액자를 두를 수 있도록 이 넓은 도로 건설에 참여할 수 있게 허락하신 선하신 하나님께 감사 드립니다.”라고 적혀 있습니다. 이 새겨진 글은 1915년 고속도로 기술자 사무엘 크리스토퍼 랭캐스터가 쓴 것으로, 그가 설계한 고속도로의 경치 좋은 전망대에 세워져 있습니다. 이 도로는 숲과 폭포, 험준한 절벽이 어우러진 숨 막힐 듯 아름다운 컬럼비아 강 협곡으로 운전자를 인도합니다.

우리는 자신의 능력과 업적을 인정받거나 칭찬받고 싶은 욕구를 느끼지만, 만일 그것들을 하나님의 걸작품을 위한 하찮은 ”액자”로 생각한다면 어떨까요? 한 예로, 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 성전 건축을 위한 예물을 가져오도록 권했던 얘기가 있습니다(출애굽기 35:5). “기꺼이 자원하고 마음이 감동된 모든 사람”은 귀금속과 돌, 베, 가죽, 나무, 향료, 기름 등 자신이 가진 것들을 바쳤습니다(21-28절). 이 값진 물품들은 하나님의 명령을 이행하기 위해 기꺼이 바쳐진 것이었습니다(29절). 특별히 재능이 뛰어난 장인들도 있었지만 염소 털을 이용해서 실을 솜씨 좋게 뽑는 여인들과 같이 누구든지 무언가를 바칠 수 있었습니다(26절).

그때나 지금이나 가장 중요한 것은 하나님께 드리는 각 사람의 마음 가짐입니다. “너희의 소유 중에서 너희는 여호와께 드릴 것을 택하라”(5절). 바로 그때 우리가 가진 것들이 가장 큰 가치를 발휘하게 됩니다.

LIVES OFFERED TO GOD

“I am thankful to God for His goodness,” reads the plaque, “in permitting me to have a part in building this broad thoroughfare as a frame to the beautiful picture which He created.” The inscription is attributed to highway engineer Samuel Christopher Lancaster in 1915. It stands at a beautiful scenic overlook on the highway he designed, a road that takes drivers along the breathtaking Columbia River Gorge with forests, waterfalls, and rocky cliffs.

It’s tempting to take credit for our resources and accomplishments or use them to bring ourselves praise. What would it look like, instead, to think of them as a lowly “frame” around God’s masterpiece? One example is when Moses invited the Israelites to bring gifts to build the tabernacle (EXODUS 35:5). “Everyone who was willing and whose heart moved them” contributed what they had: precious metal and stone, linen, leather, wood, spices, and oil (VV. 21-28). These costly goods were offered from willing hearts to fulfill what God had commanded (V. 29). Some master craftsmen were especially gifted. But everyone could contribute something, like the women who skillfully spun goat hair (V. 26).

What mattered most then, and today, is the posture of the giver’s heart. “From what you have, take an offering for the Lord” (V. 5). That’s when our resources are put to their best use.

그리스도의 빛이 되어

코로나바이러스 전염병이 창궐하던 시기, 전세계의 학교들이 학생들을 집으로 돌려보냈을 때, 교정과 운동장은 텅 비었습니다. 많은 사람들이 더 큰 고통을 겪고 있음을 알고 있지만, 교사들은 자신들이 학생들을 그리워한다는 마음을 전하고, 학생들이 어려운 시기를 잘 이겨내도록 격려하기를 원했습니다. 그래서 많은 학교들이 “빛이 되자”라는 운동을 시작하여, 매일 밤 텅 빈 운동장의 불을 밝혔습니다.

예수님도 이 땅에 계실 때 주님의 방식으로 “빛이 되라”는 도전을 주셨 습니다. 주님을 따르는 자로서 “[우리의] 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게” 해야 한다고 말씀 하신 것입니다(마태복음 5:16). 예수님의 이 명령은 단순한 격려나 도덕적인 지지 이상의 더 고귀한 목표를 지니고 있었습니다. 우리가 주님께서 우리 안에 두신 빛을 적극적으로 드러낼 때, 우리를 지켜보는 이 세상이 하나님이 어떤 분인지를 알게 됩니다. 우리의 삶은 말과 행동을 통해 예수님께서 주시는 소망을 보여주며, 탁자 위에 놓인 등불처럼 우리 주위의 모든 사람들에게 분명히 드러나게 됩니다.

BEING A LIGHT FOR CHRIST

When schools around the globe sent their students home for health and safety during the coronavirus pandemic, their buildings and stadiums stood empty. While acknowledging many were experiencing greater afflictions from the virus, teachers sought ways to show their students they missed them and to encourage them to press on through a difficult time. Many schools initiated what they called the “Be the Light” challenge, in which they burned the empty stadium’s lights each night.

During His earthly life, Jesus issued His own kind of “be the light” challenge, saying that we who follow Him are to “let [our] light shine before others” (MATTHEW 5:16). His charge had a loftier goal than encouragement or moral support; instead, our willingness to reveal the light He’s put in us shows the watching world who God is. The way we live our lives, in both word and deed, reveals the hope Jesus gives us, making it visible to all those around us, like a lamp on a stand.

Jesus calls us “the light of the world” and challenges us to illuminate the paths of others with His light radiating through us when they’re walking a dark road. For those who don’t yet know the hope Jesus offers, sharing His light through the way we live can point them toward God as the source of all hope.

하나님의 때

1967년 이전까지 시간의 단위는 과학적으로 천문학적 패턴, 곧 지구의 자전과 태양을 중심으로 한 공전을 측정함으로 결정되었습니다. 그러나 수세기가 지나면서 문제가 드러났습니다. 지구의 자전이 느려 지고 있었던 것입니다. 과학자들은 1초라는 단위가 예전보다 길어졌음을 발견했고, 점진적이기는 하지만, 그리스도 시대 이후로 세상은 측정된 시간에서 세 시간을 온전히 “잃었다”고 말합니다.

물론, 하나님은 우리가 시간을 측정하는 방식, 즉 궤도와 공전의 천문학을 창조하셨습니다. 과학자들의 계산이 우리가 생각했던 것보다 불확실해 보여도, 우리는 “주께는 하루가 천 년 같고”(베드로후서 3:8)라는 베드로의 말을 확고히 믿을 수 있습니다. 그는 예수님께서 아직 오지 않으셨다고 불평하며 의심하는 자들을 반박하고 있습니다. “주의 약속은 어떤 이들이 더디다고 생각하는 것 같이 더딘 것이 아니라”(9절). 하나님은 그분의 목적에 맞게 자신의 때에 일하십니다.

GOD’S TIMING

Until 1967, units of time were scientifically measured by astronomical patterns: the spin of the earth and its revolution around the sun. But over the centuries, a problem emerged. The earth is actually slowing down in its orbit. Scientists discovered that the unit of the second is longer than it used to be. Gradual though this is, since the days of Christ, the world has “lost” a full three hours of measured time.

Of course, God created the ways we measure time: the astronomy of orbits and revolutions. Scientists’ calculations may be squishier than we’d thought, but we can stand firmly in Peter’s words: “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years” (2 PETER 3:8). He is arguing against doubters who complained that Jesus hadn’t returned yet. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness” (V. 9). God works in His own time for His own purposes.

There’s more: God’s “timing” is born out of His love: “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish” (V. 9). Jesus will return, and God wants everyone to have the opportunity to come to Him. This is an expression of His love. Meanwhile, we’re to “make every effort to be found spotless” (V. 14).

Time, God, and love are linked together: In these last days God’s love is never squishy. It’s the one sure thing. KENNETH PETERSEN

고통 가운데 함께하기

“아빠, 머리가 아파요.” “아빠, 너무 추워요.” “아빠, 발 좀 주물러 줄 수 있어요?” 최근 내 십대 딸은 고열과 오한을 동반하여 몸살을 심하게 앓았습니다. 딸은 내가 고통을 완화시켜 주기를 원했습니다. 그러나, 무엇보다 그저 곁에 함께 있어 주기를 원했습니다. 결국 우리는 딸을 응급진료소에 데려 갔습니다. “바이러스 감염”이라는 진단을 받았고, 특별히 할 수 있는 일은 없고 그냥 견뎌야 한다고 했습니다.

나는 그날 아픈 딸 곁에 몇 시간을 함께 있었습니다. 발을 주물러 주고, 약을 챙겨주면서, 딸의 증상이 나아지기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 이따금 이기적으로 ‘이건 정말 힘든데’라는 생각이 들기도 했습니다. 사실, 누군가의 고통을 바로 곁에서 지켜보며 함께 있는 것은 쉽지 않습니다.

욥의 친구들도 그의 고통을 바로 가까이에서 지켜봤습니다. 이 세 명은 나중에 욥을 제대로 대해주지 않았다는 이유로 자주, 그리고 어쩌면 공정하게, 비난을 받습니다. 하지만 그들이 처음에는 욥과 함께 앉아 있었다는 사실은 쉽게 잊혀집니다. “밤낮 칠 일 동안 그와 함께 땅에 앉았으나 욥의 고통이 심함을 보므로 그에게 한마디도 말하는 자가 없었더라”(욥기 2:13).

SITTING WITH THE SUFFERING

“Daddy, my head hurts.” “Daddy, I’m so cold.” “Daddy, can you rub my feet?” A high fever, chills, and body aches recently descended cruelly upon my teenage daughter. She wanted me to make it better. But mostly she just wanted me near. Eventually we took her to urgent care. “Virus,” we were told. Nothing to do but ride it out.

I sat with my sick girl for hours that day. Rubbing her feet. Getting her medicine. Desperately wanting her to feel better. Occasionally, my selfish side complained, This is hard. Indeed, it is hard to sit with people’s suffering, to witness their hurt up close.

Job’s friends saw his suffering up close too. These three guys are often—fairly!—criticized for their later poor treatment of Job. But it’s easy to forget that, initially, they simply sat with him: “They sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was” (JOB 2:13).

Jobs’ friends remind us that when someone we love is hurting, it’s our presence—our being there, whether we speak or not—that often matters most. Their example reminds us that even though we may not always know what to say, simply sitting with someone in their suffering may be the greatest gift we can give.

헌신의 대가

스물두 명의 기독교 지도자들이 다른 나라에서 온 한 목사를 비밀리에 만나서 배우기 위해 반나절을 걸려 모였습니다. 만약 발각된다면, 그 목사는 추방되고 다른 사람들은 3년 동안 감옥에 갇힐 것입니다. 스물 두 명 중 열여덟 명은 이미 예수님을 믿는다는 이유로 투옥된 경험이 있었습니다.

목사가 자신이 가져온 성경책 15권을 나누어주자, 한 여인이 자신이 받은 성경을 다른 사람에게 양보했습니다. 다른 많은 사람들처럼, 이 여인은 만일 감옥에 가게 되더라도 지혜의 말씀을 마음에 간직할 수 있도록 성경 구절들을 외우고 있었습니다. 나중에 여인은 목사에게 그들의 교회가 그의 교회처럼 자유롭게 모일 수 있도록 기도해 달라고 부탁했습니다. 그러나 목사는 그들이 그렇게 희생하고 박해를 견디며 투옥의 위험을 무릅쓰는 깊은 신앙의 모습에 감동받아, 오히려 자신의 교회가 그들의 교회처럼 되게 해 달라고 기도했습니다.

세상 곳곳에서 믿음을 지키는 그리스도인들이 박해를 받고 있습니다. 그 중에도 어떤 이들은 다른 이들보다 더 심한 박해를 받습니다. 모든 신자들은 예수님을 따르는 일이 위험해질 때 위축될 수 있습니다. 그러나 성령님은 하나님이 주신 은사를 우리가 “능력과 사랑과 절제”(디모데후서 1:7)로 사용하도록 도와 주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 어디에 있든 담대하고도 사랑으로 복음을 전하게 하십니다. 하나님께서 우리를 위해 행하신 모든 일 때문에(9-10절), 우리는 그리스도께 헌신하는 희생적인 대가를 기꺼이 감수하고 “그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑으로써 내게 들은 바 바른 말”(13절)을 본받아 지켜나갈 수 있습니다.

THE COST OF COMMITMENT

A group of twenty-two Christian leaders traveled half a day to secretly meet and learn from a pastor who came from another country. If caught, the pastor would be deported, and the others would spend three years in prison. Eighteen of the twentytwo had already been imprisoned for their faith in Jesus.

After the pastor handed out fifteen Bibles he’d brought with him, one woman gave hers to someone else. Like many others, she’d memorized chapters of Scripture so she would have its wisdom secured in her heart if she were to go to prison. She later asked the pastor to pray that their church would be free to gather just like his. Instead, marveling at how they sacrificed, suffered persecution, and risked imprisonment, he prayed that his church would be just like theirs.

Believers around the world are persecuted for their faith in Christ, some more severely than others. And all believers can be tempted to cower when the stakes of living for Christ are raised. But the Holy Spirit enables us to use our God-given gifts with “power, love and self-discipline” (2 TIMOTHY 1:7). God will help us share the gospel with boldness and compassion, wherever He leads. Because of all He did for us (VV. 9-10), we can embrace the sacrificial cost of commitment to Christ and preserve “sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus” (V. 13).

반항에서 돌아옴

1953년 개봉한 영화 ‘위험한 질주(The Wild One)’에서 말론 브란도는 속으로 반항적인 문제아 기질을 가진, 오토바이 갱단의 두목 조니 스트래블러 역을 맡았습니다. 이 영화 한 장면에서 젊은 여인이 갱 단원의 재킷에 새겨진 이니셜 B.R.M.C.라는 약자의 의미를 묻자, R이 “반항자들(Rebels)”을 의미한다는 것을 듣고 웃으며 드럼을 두드리고 있던 브란도의 팔을 가볍게 잡으며 이렇게 묻습니다. “저기 조니. 무엇에 반항하는 거죠?” 그러자 그는 “무엇이든!”이라고 대답합니다.

이보다 더 우리의 문제를 잘 설명하는 말이 있을까요! 우리는 태어날 때부터 자기 주장을 하려는 본성을 지니고 있습니다. 우리는 주도권을 잡고 싶어 하고, 자기 뜻을 관철하고 싶어 하고, 그것이 통하지 않으면, 수동적으로라도 자기 고집을 부립니다. 반항 자체가 목적이 되는 것입니다.

이스라엘은 왜 어리석게도 “돌과 나무”(예레미야 3:9) 우상을 숭배했을까요? 그리고 왜 이스라엘의 “신실하지 못한 자매 유다”는 하나님에게 돌아오는 척만 했습니까(10절)? 왜냐하면 그것이 “그들의 악한 마음의 완악함”(17절)으로 그들의 독립성을 표현하는 방식이었기 때문입니다. 결국은 이도 반항이었습니다.

그러나 하나님의 사랑은 더 크십니다. 예수님은 반역자들을 위해 죽으셨고, 돌아올 수 있는 문을 열어 두셨습니다. “여호와께서 이르시되 ‘배역한 이스라엘아 돌아오라’ ‘나의 노한 얼굴을 너희에게로 향하지 아니하리라 나는 긍휼이 있는 자라... 너는 오직 네 죄를 자복하라 네 하나님 여호와를 배반한 죄를!’”(12-13절).

우리는 반항하는 자들로 태어났지만, 돌아올 수 있습니다. 이제 아버지께 달려 가서 용서와 사랑, 그리고 도우심을 누립시다.

REBELLION AND RETURN

T he Wild One is a 1953 movie starring Marlon Brando as Johnny Strabler, a troubled, brooding leader of a motorcycle gang. In one scene, a young woman notices a gang member’s jacket with the initials, B.R.M.C. When she learns that the R stands for “rebels,” she laughs and touches the arm of Brando as he idly pats a drum. “Hey, Johnny. What are you rebelling against?” He replies, “What do you got?”

What an apt description of our problem! We’re born with a drive to assert ourselves. We want to be in charge, preferably by getting our way. If that doesn’t work, we’ll assert ourselves by dragging our feet. The rebellion is the point.

Why did Israel foolishly worship idols of “stone and wood” (JEREMIAH 3:9)? And why did Israel’s “unfaithful sister Judah” only pretend to return to God (V. 10)? Because that’s how they expressed their independence—“the stubbornness of their evil hearts” (V. 17). The rebellion was the point.

But God’s love is stronger. Jesus died for rebels and leaves the door open for their return. “ ‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful . . . . Only acknowledge your guilt—you have rebelled against the Lord your God’ ” (VV. 12-13).

We may be born rebels, but we can return. Let’s run home to our Father, where we find His forgiveness, love, and help.

예수님이 주시는 소망

모든 것은 슬픔에 잠긴 한 아버지가 내게 보낸 한 통의 이메일로 시작 되었습니다. 그 분은 대학교 3학년이던 딸 알리사가 교통사고로 세상을 떠난 뒤, 자신의 끔찍한 아픔을 이해하는 누군가로부터 위로를 받고 싶었습니다.

4년 동안 약 300통에 달하는 이메일을 주고받은 후, 크레이그와 나는 마침내 직접 만날 수 있었습니다. 직장 일로 근처 도시에 오게 되면서, 어느 주일 우리는 함께 교회에서 예배를 드리고, 점심을 먹으며 우리 딸들인 멜리사와 알리사에 대한 추억을 나누었습니다. 이 두 소녀는 다른 사람들을 기쁘게 하고 배구를 좋아하며, 예수님을 사랑했고, 아무 잘못도 없이 교통사고로 세상을 떠났습니다.

그날 우리 대화의 핵심은 무엇이었을까요? 우리는 슬픔을 나누었고, 함께 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 그러나 무엇보다도 소망에 대해 더욱 많이 이야기 했습니다. 하나님의 약속에 근거한 참되고 진정한 소망 말입니다. 바울 사도는 이렇게 설명합니다. “형제들아 자는 자들에 관하여는 너희가 알지 못함을 우리가 원하지 아니하노니 이는 소망 없는 다른 이와 같이 슬퍼하지 않게 하려 함이라 우리가 예수께서 죽으셨다가 다시 살아나심을 믿을진대 이와 같이 예수 안에서 자는 자들도 하나님이 그와 함께 데리고 오시리라”(데살로니가전서 4:13-14). 믿는 자에게는 무덤 너머에 영원한 생명이 있습니다.

그날 우리는 우리 딸들이 하나님의 사랑의 품 안에 안전히 있음을 믿었기 때문에, 함께 기도하며 하나님께 감사드리고 헤어졌습니다. 절망적인 상황에서도 예수님의 사랑을 나누면 마음에 위로를 받고 소망을 가질 수 있습니다.

THE HOPE JESUS BRINGS

It began with an email a grieving father sent to me. He had lost his daughter Alyssa—a college junior—in a car accident, and he needed to hear from someone who understood his wrenching pain.

Nearly three hundred emails and four years later, Craig and I were finally able to meet in person. His job had taken him to a nearby city, so on a Sunday we shared a church service, lunch, and memories of our daughters: Melissa and Alyssa—two girls who’d made other people happy, enjoyed volleyball, loved Jesus, and innocently lost their lives in car accidents.

What was the essence of our conversation that day? We discussed our sadness. And we cried. But mostly we spoke of hope. True, authentic hope based on God’s promises. “We do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope,” the apostle Paul explained. “For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and . . . God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-14). For the believer, beyond the grave is life—life eternal.

Craig and I ended the day by praying and thanking God that our daughters are secure in His loving arms. The shared love of Jesus binds hearts and gives hope in otherwise hopeless situations.

친구들의 믿음

한 컨퍼런스에 참석한 한 여성이 그날 발표자인 친구가 몸이 안 좋아 보여 그에게 다가갔습니다. 그러자 친구는 “이번 발표를 그대로 할 거야. 혹시 내일 아침까지도 나아지지 않으면 병원에 가보려 해.”라고 말했습니다. 그는 발표자의 이 약속을 잘 기억해 두었습니다. 그리고 자기는 부득이 일찍 떠나야 했기에 다른 친구에게 부탁해 그 발표자를 살펴봐 달라고 했습니다.

아침이 되어 누군가가 그 발표자의 호텔방 문을 두드렸습니다. 두 번째 친구가 그를 병원에 데리고 가려고 온 것입니다. 더 이상 피할 수 없던 상황에서 그 발표자는 다행히 제때에 치료를 받아 생명을 구할 수 있었습니다. 친구들의 끈질긴 관심이 그의 목숨을 구하는데 분명히 도움이 된 것입니다.

마가복음 2장에 나오는 친구들처럼 끈기 있는 친구들은 축복입니다. 그들은 예수님께 치유의 능력이 있다는 것과 예수님이 그들의 마을에 오셨다는 소식을 들었을 것입니다(1절). 사람들이 예수님께 몰려드는 바람에 중풍병자 친구를 예수님께 데려갈 만한 자리가 없었습니다(2절). 하지만 그들은 많은 사람들 때문에 친구가 도움을 받지 못하게 내버려두지 않았습니다. “그들이 그 계신 곳의 지붕을 뜯어 구멍을 내고 중풍병자를... 달아 내리니”(4절) 예수님이 그를 고쳐 주셨습니다(11-12절).

끈기를 가지고 다른 사람의 필요를 위해 예수님께 기도로 간구합시다. 그리고 예수님이 우리의 필요를 공급해 주시는 것처럼 우리도 사람들을 힘써 돕고 사랑합시다.

FAITH OF FRIENDS

Attending a conference, a woman noticed that her friend—the day’s presenter—didn’t look well. She approached the presenter, who replied, “I’m going to get through this presentation. If I don’t feel better in the morning, I’ll go to the doctor.” The woman didn’t forget about the presenter’s promise. This friend had to leave early, but she asked another friend to check on the presenter.

In the morning, there was a knock at the presenter’s hotel door. The second friend had come to drive her to the hospital. There was no backing out, and—fortunately—she was given lifesaving treatments in time. The persistence of friends had evidently helped to save her life.

Persistent friends can be a blessing, just like the men in Mark 2. They’d apparently heard about the healing power of Jesus and that He’d come to their town (V. 1). The people clambered to Christ, and there was “no room left” for the men to get their paralyzed friend to Him (V. 2). They didn’t let a crowd stop them from getting their friend the help he needed, however: “They made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered . . . the man” (V. 4) to Christ who healed him (VV. 11-12).

Let’s bring the needs of others to Jesus through persistent prayer. And as He provides what we need, let’s strive to help and love them well.
