다윗을 건지심

고교 레슬링 경기 준결승에서 데이브는 오른쪽 갈비뼈에 금이 가는 부상을 입었습니다. 그 경기에서는 이겼으나 갈비뼈 부상을 입은 채 어떻게 결승전을 치를지 걱정이 되었습니다.

결승전에서 그는 부상을 입지 않은 왼쪽 다리를 절면서 경기장에 올랐 습니다. 그러자 상대 선수는 경기 내내 데이브의 왼쪽 다리만 공략했습니다. 결국 데이브는 다친 오른쪽을 잘 보호하며 우승을 차지했습니다.

또 다른 “데이브”가 있습니다. 성경 속의 다윗도 어려운 상황에서 벗어 나려고 속임수를 사용했습니다. 자신을 죽이려고 하는 사울 왕을 피해 도망치던 다윗은 이스라엘의 적국으로 피신했지만 그 나라의 왕은 얼마 지나지 않아 다윗이 히브리 백성의 전쟁 영웅이라는 사실을 알게 되었습니다(사무엘상 21:11). 생명의 위협을 느낀 다윗은 “미친 체하고 대문짝에 그적거리며 침을 수염에 흘렸습니다”(13절). 그의 계략은 통했습니다(14-15절).

이런 행동이 옳은 것인지에 대해서는 논란이 있을 수 있습니다. 그러나 시편 34편은 다윗의 상황을 새로운 시각으로 조명해줍니다. 시편에서 다윗은 자신을 위기에서 구해낸 것은 자신의 얄팍한 속임수가 아닌 하나님의 은혜라고 고백합니다. 그는 노래했습니다. “내가 여호와께 간구하매...내 모든 두려움에서 나를 건지셨도다”(4절). “이 곤고한 자가 부르짖으매...그의 모든 환난에서 구원하셨도다”(6절). 블레셋 사람들 속에 들어가 안전을 도모하려했던 다윗은 결국 하나님께로 돌이켰을 때 비로소 유일하고 믿을 수 있는 피난처를 받견했던 것입니다(8, 22절).

DAVID’S DELIVERANCE

In the semifinals of his high school wrestling tournament, Dave cracked a rib on his right side. He won the match but wondered how he’d survive the championship with a damaged ribcage.

In the finals, Dave limped out to the mat on his left, uninjured leg. So his opponent targeted Dave’s left leg throughout the match. Dave protected his right side and won.

Another “Dave” used deception to extract himself from a tough situation. David had been fleeing a murderous King Saul. He found refuge among Israel’s enemies, but word soon got to the enemy king that David was a Hebrew war hero (1 SAMUEL 21:11). Fearing for his life, David “pretended to be insane . . . making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard” (V. 13). The ploy worked (VV. 14-15).

Good people can debate such tactics and arrive at different conclusions. But Psalm 34 sheds light on David’s experience. There, David credited not his deception but God for his deliverance. He sang, “I sought the Lord, and he . . . delivered me from all my fears” (V. 4). And again, “This poor man called, and the Lord . . . saved him out of all his troubles” (V. 6). David had sought safety with the Philistines, but he found his only reliable refuge when he turned to God (VV. 8, 22).

참된 보화

제임스는 밧줄의 한쪽 끝에 강한 자석을 묶어 뉴욕의 한 호수에 던졌습니다. 그 “자석 낚시꾼”은 진흙투성이의 백 달러 지폐가 다발로 가득 찬 지저분한 금고를 건져올리고는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 경찰은 그 돈이 범죄에 연루되지 않았기 때문에 제임스가 가져도 된다고 말했습니다. 지폐 중 일부는 상태가 너무 안 좋아서 진위 여부를 확인할 수 없었지만, 그는 집을 사는 데 보태기 위해 가능한 한 많은 돈을 복원하고 싶었습니다.

숨겨진 보화를 찾는 것은 흥미진진한 일이고 예수님도 이와 비슷한 예화를 들려주셨습니다. “천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라” (마태복음 13:44). 이 사람은 그가 발견한 보화의 가치를 알기 때문에 자신의 소유를 모두 팔아 그 밭을 사려고 했습니다.

이 비유와 관련해 생각해보면, 세상의 어떤 재물이나 소유로도 우리의 죄 값을 치를 수는 없습니다. 오직 예수님의 대신 죽으심과 부활하심만이 우리를 구원하고 하나님 아버지와 화목하게 하는 그 엄청난 값을 치를 수 있습니다.

세상의 보화들도 좋지만, 그것들은 잃어버리고 빼앗기고 망가질 수 있습 니다. 우리는 예수님께서 우리를 위해 치르신 지고한 희생과 값없이 주신 영생 이라는 선물을 감사함으로 받을 수 있으며, 그분과 함께 천국에서 사는 것이 우리의 가장 큰 상급임을 압니다.

TRUE TREASURE

James threw a long rope with a powerful magnet tied to it into the waters of a New York lake. The “magnet fisher” was stunned when he pulled out a grimy safe filled with stacks of muddy one-hundred-dollar bills. Police said James could keep the money since it wasn’t linked to a crime. Some of the bills were in such poor condition they couldn’t be authenticated, though he hoped to salvage as much of the money as possible to perhaps buy a home.

Finding hidden treasure is exciting, and Jesus told a parable about a man who did just that: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (MATTHEW 13:44). The man recognized the value of the treasure he’d found and was willing to sell all his possessions to purchase the field.

As we consider that parable, no amount of wealth or possessions could pay the debt we owe for our sins. Only Jesus could pay the incredible price to redeem us and to reconcile us with His Father, through His sacrificial death and resurrection.

Earthly treasures may be nice, but they can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. We can gratefully accept Jesus’ supreme sacrifice for us and His free gift of eternal life, knowing that living in heaven with Him is our great reward.

고요함 가운데

어린 시절 한밤중에 잠에서 깨면 거실 의자에 앉아 있는 엄마를 종종 발견 할 수 있었습니다. 탁자 스탠드 불빛이 엄마의 무릎 위에 놓인 성경책을 비추고 있었습니다. 불면증과 만성통증으로 잠을 잘 이루지 못한 엄마는 그 시간을 지혜롭게 사용했습니다. 그 밤에 우리가 대화를 나누는 일은 거의 없었습니다. 나는 너무 졸려서 아무 말 없이 고개만 끄덕이고 발을 끌며 복도를 지나 방으로 갔습니다. 하지만 나는 엄마가 그 고요한 새벽 시간에 하나님과 깊이 교제하셨고 하나님께서 엄마에게 말씀하셨다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

우리는 어떻게 하나님을 더 깊이 알아가는 시간을 가질 수 있을까요? 물론 잠 못 이루는 밤이 찾아올 때까지 기다리지 않아도 됩니다. 예수님께서는 제자들과 떨어져 홀로 하나님 아버지와 대화를 나누셨습니다(마가복음 1:35).

성경은 “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”(시편 46:10) 라고 말합니다. 그리고 다윗의 시편은 그가 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 찬양하기 위해 어떻게 하나님과의 친밀한 관계를 간절히 구했는지를 보여주곤 합니다 (시편 63:1-8).

세상은 소란스럽고 우리는 그 소음에 정신을 빼앗기곤 합니다. 세상은 우리의 관심을 요구하고 세상일에 동참하라고 강요합니다. 그래서 우리는 분주한 가정생활이나 바쁜 업무 속에서 좀처럼 갖기 힘든 조용한 시간을 적극적으로 찾아 나서야 하는 것입니다. 그 고요함 속에서 우리는 하나님을 발견합니다.

하나님은 깨어계십니다. 우리의 기도를 듣고 계십니다. 그리고 그분을 찾는 이들과 시간을 함께 보내실 준비가 되어있으십니다.

IN THE STILLNESS

When I was a kid and got up in the middle of the night, I often found Mom sitting in her chair in the living room. The glow of the table lamp revealed a book on her lap— her Bible. My mom had trouble sleeping because of her insomnia and chronic pain, but she made good use of her time. We rarely spoke those nights. I was too sleepy to do anything but nod and shuffle down the hall. But I know Mom connected with God in those quiet early morning hours, and God spoke to her.

How can we find moments to know God more fully? We don’t have to wait for a sleepless night, of course. Jesus left His companions to spend time talking alone with His Father (MARK 1:35).

The Scriptures say, “Be still, and know that I am God” (PSALM 46:10). And David’s poetry often reveals how he sought out an intimate relationship with God to praise Him for who He is (63:1-8).

The world is loud, and we’re often distracted by the noise. It claims our attention and demands our participation. That’s why we need to actively seek out the quiet moments rarely found in the chaos of family life or the busyness of work. We find God in the stillness.

He’s awake. He’s listening. And He’s always ready to spend time with those who seek Him.

긍휼히 여기는 이해심

나의 장인어른은 제2차 세계대전 당시 유럽 상공을 비행하던 폭격기의 기관총 사수였습니다. 그의 비행기가 격추되면서 포로로 잡혔고 그는 몇 달 동안 전쟁 포로 수용소에서 지냈습니다. 그는 그때의 경험에 대해 거의 입밖에 내지 않았지만, 전쟁 전에 그를 알았던 사람들은 그가 환한 미소를 짓는 낙천적인 젊은이였다고 말합니다. 그러던 그가 전쟁을 겪으면서 우울하고 내성적인 사람으로 바뀌었습니다.

나는 장인어른이 겪은 일을 조금이나마 이해해보고자 유럽 상공의 공중 전에 대해 도널드 밀러가 쓴 ‘공중의 전사들’을 읽어보았습니다. 그 책은 공중전에 참여했던 병사들이 겪었던 육체적, 정신적 고통을 이해하는 데 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그 책을 읽고 난 후 장인어른을 향한 나의 연민의 마음이 더욱 깊어졌습니다.

히브리서는 “위대한 대제사장”(4:14)이신 예수님에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. 예수님은 단지 우리의 고통을 이해하는 데 그치지 않고, 우리와 함께 사시면서 모든 상황 속에서 우리가 느끼는 감정을 직접 아셨습니다. 히브리서는 이렇게 말합니다. “우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라”(15절). 한번 생각해 보십시오! 예수님은 우리가 무엇을 견뎌내고 있는지 아십니다. 그분도 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으셨습니다.

예수님의 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 배우는 것은 예수님을 필요로 하는 이들 에게 그분의 사랑을 전하는 훌륭한 방법입니다. 하나님께서 성령을 통하여 우리에게 사랑과 자비로 이웃에게 다가가는 이해의 마음을 허락해주시기를 소망합니다.

COMPASSIONATE UNDERSTANDING

My father-in-law was a gunner in a bomber over Europe during World War II. His plane was shot down and he was captured, spending several months as a prisoner of war. Jim rarely spoke of the experience, but those who knew him before the war said that he’d been a happy-go-lucky young man with a beaming smile. His war experiences turned him into a moody, withdrawn person.

Trying to understand his experience, I read Masters of the Air, Donald Miller’s description of the air war over Europe. Miller helped me grasp the physical and psychological price paid by these airmen. His book increased my compassion for my father-in-law.

The writer of Hebrews wrote of our “great high priest” (4:14)— Jesus Himself—who did much more than merely gain understanding of our struggles. He lived among us, learning how we feel in every situation. Hebrews tells us, “We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (V. 15). Think of it! Jesus knows what we endure. He’s been tempted just as we are.

Learning to have a heart of compassion like Jesus is a great way to show His love to those who need Him. May God give us, by His Holy Spirit, an understanding heart that reaches out to others in love and mercy.

하나님의 뜻에 맞는 목표

사전 통보도 없이 직장에서 해고된 윌은 심한 우울증으로 정신과에 자진 입원해 치료까지 받았습니다. 별 차도 없이 몇 주가 지난 어느 날, 평소처럼 산책하던 그를 본 치료사가 웃으며 큰 소리로 말했습니다. “휴게실까지 누가 먼저 가나 내기할까요. 내가 이길걸요.” 윌은 당시를 이렇게 회상합니다. “치료사의 그 작은 행동 하나가 내 안의 무언가를 일깨웠습니다.” 갑자기 그는 자신에게 목표가 생겼음을 느꼈습니다. 그는 빠른 걸음으로 치료사와 경주를 벌였고, 결국 휴게실에 먼저 도착해 이겼습니다. 놀랍게도, 동기를 부여하는 단 하나의 목표를 가지고 그것을 달성한 경험이 그에게 희망을 주었고, 이는 회복의 열쇠가 되었습니다.

분명한 목표의 힘을 알았던 바울 사도는 성도들에게 “내가 그리스도를 알고자”(빌립보서 3:10) 한다고 말했습니다. 바울이 부활하신 예수님의 능력을 알고자 했던 이유는 그 능력이 자신을 예수님을 더욱 닮아가게 만들어 줄 것이기 때문이었습니다. 그 목표를 이루려고 바울은 “뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가는”(13–14절) 한 가지 전략을 따랐습니다. 자신이 부족하다고 느끼십니까? 그리스도 안에서 “오직 우리가 어디까지 이르렀든지 그대로 행할 것이라”(16절)는 말씀대로 살아갈 때, 하나님께서는 우리가 목표의 초점을 다시 맞출 수 있도록 도와주십니다.

그러므로 바울의 목표는 땅의 것에 맞추어져 있지 않았습니다. 그는 “우리의 시민권은 하늘에”(20절) 있음을 알았습니다. 우리가 이렇게 영원한 것을 바라볼 때 그리스도 안에서 힘차게 살아갈 새로운 소망을 발견하게 됩니다.

GOALS ALIGNED WITH GOD

After getting fired from his job without prior notice, Wil became so depressed that he admitted himself into an inpatient mental health facility. Then one day, after weeks with no progress, he was taking his daily walk when his therapist, seeing him, smiled and called out, “I bet I’ll beat you to the community room.” Wil recalls, “That small act triggered something inside of me.” Suddenly he felt he had a purpose. Walking fast, he raced his therapist to the room and won. To his surprise, having one inspiring goal and meeting it gave him hope—a key to his recovery.

The apostle Paul understood the power of a clear goal. “I want to know Christ,” he told church members (PHILIPPIANS 3:10). He wanted to know the power of the resurrected Jesus, for that power would help the apostle become more like Him. To achieve that aim, Paul followed one strategy: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (VV. 13-14). Feel like you’re falling short? God helps us refocus our goals as we “live up to what we have already attained” in Christ (V. 16).

Paul’s goal, therefore, wasn’t focused on earthly things. He knew that “our citizenship is in heaven” (V. 20). With this eternal perspective in view, we find new hope to thrive in Christ.

하나님의 도우심으로 하는 유순한 대답

“이제 그만 닫게나. 볼 만큼 본 듯 하니.” 어느날 오후, 벌통관리법을 배우던 중 나이가 지긋하고 경험이 많은 양봉사가 내게 말했습니다. 내 동작이 빠르고 거친 탓에 그로 인한 진동에 놀란 벌들이 내 머리 주위로 몰려들고 있었던 것입니다. 벌을 돌보려던 것이 오히려 화나게 만든 것입니다. 그 양봉사는 벌들을 자극하지 않도록 살며시 “부드럽게” 움직이는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 직접 시범을 보여 주었습니다. 여러 해가 지난 지금 벌통을 다루는 나의 동작은 훨씬 부드러워져서 아내는 내가 마치 춤을 추는 것 같다고 말합니다.

때로 어려운 대화는 벌과 함께 춤을 추는 것과 비슷합니다. 화가 나있거나 감정이 격해진 사람에게 똑같이 화를 내며 대하면 상황은 더 나빠질 뿐입니다. 솔로몬왕은 이렇게 말했습니다. “유순한 대답은 분노를 쉬게 하여도 과격한 말은 노를 격동하느니라”(잠언 15:1). 화가 나 있거나 막무가내인 사람에게 친절하고 편안하게 응대하는 법을 배우는 데는 시간이 걸립니다. 그러나 온유함은 우리 안에서 역사하시는 성령의 열매이기 때문에(갈라디아서 5:22-23 참조), 하나님의 도우심으로 우리는 점점 그렇게 되어갈 수 있습니다.

요즘 나는 벌통에 다가가거나 어려운 대화를 나누어야 할 때마다 지혜와 온유함을 달라고 기도합니다. 긴장된 순간에 하나님과 동행하면 “환난 중에 만날 큰 도움”(시편 46:1)은 바로 거기에 있습니다.

GENTLE ANSWERS WITH GOD’S HELP

“Close it up. I’ve seen enough.” Those were the words of an older, experienced beekeeper to me one afternoon when I was learning how to tend a hive. My movements had been quick and forceful, causing vibrations that alarmed the bees and resulted in a growing swarm around my head. Even though I was trying to care for them, I was only making them angry. My friend proceeded to show me the importance of moving “softly,” using gentle motions that were less likely to disturb the bees. Today (years later), when I go into a hive, my motions are so much smoother that my wife tells me it almost looks like I’m dancing.

Sometimes difficult conversations are like dancing with bees. When others are upset and emotions are tense, reacting angrily only makes matters worse. As King Solomon observed, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (PROVERBS 15:1). Responding kindly and peacefully to those who are irritated or unreasonable may take time to learn. But because gentleness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit at work within us (SEE GALATIANS 5:22-23), with God’s help we can make progress in it.

These days I’m learning to pray for wisdom and gentleness whenever I go into a hive or a difficult conversation. When we walk with God into tense moments, our “help in trouble” is never far away (PSALM 46:1).

NOT RITUAL BUT CHRIST

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, thousands gather each year to burn Zozobra—a fifty-foot towering effigy stuffed with their worries, bills, and regrets. They shout, “Burn him!” as they hope the flames will devour their anxieties and troubles and reset their lives. The ritual reflects a deep human longing to be cleansed of fear, shame, and failure. It’s dramatic. But it’s also powerless. Fire can destroy paper but not guilt. It can consume ashes but not shame.

The apostle Paul wrote, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ” (COLOSSIANS 2:8). He reminded his readers that they shouldn’t trade Jesus for empty substitutes, and he explains why: Christ is the visible “image of the invisible God” (1:15), is supreme over creation (1:16), fully God in human flesh (2:9), and victorious over “every power and authority” (V. 10). Because of His death and resurrection, we’re “rooted and built up in him” (V. 7), and fully alive and forgiven by Him (V. 13). Human rituals and cultural ceremonies can mesmerize a crowd, but only Jesus can cancel sin’s debt and break its grip forever.

Instead of yielding our burdens to rituals and traditions, let’s surrender them to Christ. He alone frees us from captivity and fills us with hope.

테드(TED) 강연에서 셀레스트 헤들리는 “더 나은 대화를 위한 10가지 방법”을 소개합니다. 그중 한 가지는 언뜻 목표에 반하는 말로 들릴 지 모릅니다: 좋은 대화를 하기 위해서는 반드시 ‘경청’해야 한다는 것입니다. 다른 사람이 이야기할 때 그 사람 말을 정말로 듣고 있기 보다는, 다음에 내가 할 말을 머릿속으로 구상하고 있을 때가 많습니다. 헤들리는 여기서 작가 스티븐 코비의 말을 이렇게 인용합니다. “우리 대부분은 남이 무슨 말을 하는지 상대방의 의도를 이해하려고 하지 않고 내가 대답할 말을 찾을 의도로 상대방 말을 들으려고 한다.”

LISTENING TO GOD

In a TED Talk, Celeste Headlee outlines “10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation.” One of those might appear to be counterintuitive: In order to have good conversation, we need to listen. Often when the other person is talking, we aren’t really listening to them but forming in our minds what we next want to say. Headlee quotes author Stephen Covey: “Most of us don’t listen with the intent to understand. We listen with the intent to reply.”

Scripture has much to say about listening, especially when it comes to God. Ecclesiastes is rather blunt: “Keep your ears open and your mouth shut” (ECCLESIASTES 5:1 NLT). It reminds us that God knows a whole lot more than we do—“God is in heaven” (V. 2)—so it’s wise for us to listen to Him. A verse in Proverbs seems to resonate with the quotes from Headlee and Covey: “Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions” (18:2).

What does this mean for us? As we come before God in prayer, we would do well to make time to actually listen to Him, not just rattle on with our lists of concerns and worries. And as we find ourselves in conversations with others today, we might be surprised at how our relationships deepen when we’re really listening to them, not just figuring out what we want to tell them.

ACCEPTED BY GOD

He was the doctor who never turned away a patient—even if some couldn’t pay him and even though he himself had experienced rejection from society. In spite of Harold’s outstanding record in his medical studies, no hospital in London hired him because of the color of his skin. So in 1913 he opened his own practice in his home, often treating the poor for free. Dr. Harold Moody spent his life helping those discriminated against, earning him the title “Britain’s Martin Luther King.”

Dr. Moody shows that our life need not be determined by the rejection of others. Scripture also shows us this truth in the story of Jephthah. Although a mighty warrior, Jephthah was rejected by his half brothers and driven away from their town. They told him, “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family . . . because you are the son of another woman” (JUDGES 11:2). “So Jephthah fled from his brothers” and settled in another area (V. 3).

Although his family rejected him, God didn’t. When an enemy made war on Israel, it was Jephthah that the people turned to for help (VV. 4-6). They said, “Be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites” (V. 6). God used and helped Jephthah to subdue their enemy (VV. 29, 32-33) and to later lead Israel (JUDGES 12:7).

When we’re rejected by others, let’s keep trusting and obeying God. It’s how He sees us and what He wants us to do that matters.

영화 ‘설리’는 엔진이 멈춘 여객기를 뉴욕 허드슨강 위에 영웅적으로 비상착륙 시킨 사건을 다루고 있습니다. 구조선에서 내리던 설리 기장은 관계자에게 걸어가 이렇게 말했습니다. “누가 다쳤는지, 얼마나 다쳤는지 알아야 합니다. 그리고 인원 파악이 필요합니다. 155명, 그게 제가 확인하고 싶은 숫자입니다. 승객과 승무원을 합친 숫자요.” 담당자는 말합니다. “알겠습니다. 기장님은 괜찮으십니까?” 설리가 대답합니다. “155명 모두 확인되면 그때 대답하겠습니다.”

PRAY FOR THEM

The movie Sully depicts the heroic landing of a stalled passenger plane on New York’s Hudson River. As Captain “Sully” strode off the rescue ferry, he told an official, “I need to know who’s hurt and how badly and I need a count. One hundred fifty-five. That’s my number. That’s passengers and crew.” The man said, “Okay. How about you?” Sully replied, “I’ll answer that question when we’ve counted to one hundred fifty-five.”

Jesus is interested in a count too. He’s the Good Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to search for the one lost sheep. When He finds it, He “is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off” (MATTHEW 18:13). This doesn’t mean the one lost sheep counts more than the others. But there is the joy of relief when it’s found. As Sully’s passengers rejoiced to escape almost certain death, so heaven celebrates when someone receives salvation.

Do you know any lost sheep? Anyone who seems particularly unreachable? Pray for them. Seek to share the love of Jesus with them. Don’t give up until they’re in the fold.

Sully badgered anyone who would listen, “I need a count. We’ve got to have a count.” At long last, an official entered the hospital room where Sully was being examined. He smiled, “Got a count. One hundred fifty-five.”
