누가 나의 이웃인가?
병상에 누워 있던 마리 코블은 자기의 생명을 구해준 배달기사를 보자 환히 웃었습니다. 코블은 집 앞 진입로에서 넘어지면서 머리를 다쳐 뇌출혈을 일으켰는데, 그 모습을 보았던 라힘 쿠퍼가 구급차를 부르고 도와주었던 것입니다. 가족이 문병을 와달라고 초대하자 그는 종종 코블이 좋아하는 달달한 간식을 가져와 회복을 도왔습니다.
이 이야기는 선한 사마리아인의 비유를 생각나게 합니다. 그 이야기는 영생을 얻으려면 무엇을 해야 하는지를 묻는 어떤 율법 선생의 질문에 예수님이 답한 것입니다. 예수님은 “율법에 기록된 것”을 행하라고 말씀하시며(누가복음 10:26), “네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라”(27절)고 하셨습니다. 그러나 율법 선생은 계속해서 “내 이웃이 누구니이까?”라고 물었습니다(29절).
그 대답으로 예수님은 강도의 공격을 받아 거의 죽은 채로 버려진 남자에 대해 이야기하십니다. 두 사람 곧 제사장과 레위인이 그를 피해 지나갑니다. 그러나 “어떤 사마리아 사람은... 그를 보고 불쌍히 여겨”, “그 상처를 싸매고... 돌봐주었습니다”(33-34절). 그 사마리아인은 심하게 다쳐 도움이 필요했던 사람을 보고 아무런 편견 없이 능동적이고 신속하게 도왔습니다. 그냥 지나칠 수도 있었지만 인종이나 교리와 상관없이 그 사람을 도왔습니다.
이 말씀을 하시며 예수님은 “이 세 사람 중 누가 그 사람의 이웃이냐”고 물으셨습니다. “자비를 베푼 자니이다.”라고 대답하는 율법 선생에게 예수님은 “너도 가서 이와 같이 하라”(36-37절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리스도 안에서 우리도 다친 사람을 보면 불쌍히 여겨 지나치지 않고 도울 수 있습니다. 이것은 예수님의 사랑을 전하는 우리 모두에게 주시는 교훈입니다.

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?
From her hospital bed, Marie Coble lit up when she saw the delivery driver whose help had likely saved her life. She’d fallen in her driveway and hit her head, causing a brain bleed. Seeing her injury, Raheem Cooper helped her while calling paramedics. Invited by family to visit her in the hospital, Raheem often brings sweet treats she enjoys to assist her recovery.
Their story brings to mind the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable is Jesus’ reply to an expert’s question on what he must do to inherit eternal life. Do “what is written in the law,” Jesus said (LUKE 10:26), including “love your neighbor as yourself” (V. 27). But the expert persisted, asking, “Who is my neighbor?” (V. 29).
Christ’s answer describes a man attacked by robbers, left half dead, and then ignored by two people—a priest and a Levite—who passed him by. “But a Samaritan . . . took pity on him,” “bandaged his wounds, . . . and took care of him” (VV. 33-34). Seeing the hurting man in need, the Samaritan’s help was active, urgent, and without bias—looking past race or creed to assist someone he could’ve ignored.
Thus, Jesus asked, “Which of these three was a neighbor to the man?” “The one who had mercy on him,” the expert said. Said Jesus, “Go and do likewise” (VV. 36-37). In Christ, we too can find the compassion to help a hurting person instead of passing by. It’s a lesson for all in sharing Jesus’ love.

히포크라테스(기원전 460-375년경)는 의학을 미신의 영역에서 실험과 관찰의 빛 안으로 가져왔습니다. 그러나 그는 환자의 인간성에도 관심을 잃지 않았습니다. 그는 “환자의 질병을 아는 것보다, 그 질병을 앓는 환자를 아는 것이 훨씬 더 중요하다”고 했습니다.

KNOWING AND LOVING OTHERS
Hippocrates (CA. 460–375 BC) brought medicine out of the realm of the superstitious and into the light of testing and observation. But he didn’t lose sight of the patient’s humanity. “It is far more important to know what person the disease has,” he said, “than what disease the person has.”
The apostle Paul cared for a church with multiple problems, yet he saw the humanity of each member—including a man who’d committed a sin “that even pagans do not tolerate” (1 CORINTHIANS 5:1). Paul dealt strongly with the “disease,” and the man repented. Now, as he wrote another letter to the church in Corinth, Paul had affirming instructions for all of them. He recognized that this man’s sin had affected everyone: “He has grieved all of you to some extent,” he said (2 CORINTHIANS 2:5). But since the man had turned from his sin, Paul said, “Reaffirm your love for him” (V. 8).
His motivation was clear: “I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you” (V. 4). He knew them all. And he loved them.
Sin affects us all. Behind each sin is a human being. When we’ve been wronged, it may be difficult to work toward restoration, yet that’s what God calls us to do. Know the person. Then, in Christ’s strength, love them.

미취학 자녀의 어머니들을 돕는 사역을 하던 나는 끝도 없이 집안 일에 시달리는 엄마들을 잘 상징하는 것 한가지를 함께 찾아보았습니다. 기저귀 갈아주기, 코 닦아주기, 장난감 치우기 같은 것을 생각하는데 답은 바로 우리 눈 앞에 있었습니다. 안으로 쭈그러든 일회용 종이 주스 팩 이었습니다. 엄마들은 마치 빈 주스 팩처럼 느낄 때가 있습니다. 우리의 사역은 엄마들을 생명수의 근원인 예수께로 인도하여 그의 생명수로 엄마들의 마음을 가득 채우는 일이었습니다.
요한복음 7장에서 예수님은 이스라엘 백성이 광야에서 방황하는 동안 하나님이 공급해주신 것을 기념하는 초막절(10절) 행사에 가셨습니다. 이 축제에는 물을 붓는 의식이 포함되어 있었습니다. 그것은 수분이 있어야만 누릴 수 있는 풍요를 상징했고, 또한 메시아가 가져올 영적 비를 예시하는 것이었습니다. 예수님은 고대 절기축제에서 예상된 것들을 다 이루십니다. “누구든지 목마르거든 내게로 와서 마시라 나를 믿는 자는 성경에 이름과 같이 그 배에서 생수의 강이 흘러나오리라”(37-38절).

AN EMPTY JUICE BOX
When I led a ministry for moms of preschoolers, we hunted for an image to describe the unending demands that mothers experience. Changing diapers. Wiping noses. Picking up toys. It turns out the image was right in front of us: a disposable juice box collapsed in on itself. Moms can feel like empty juice boxes. That ministry served moms by leading them to the Source of living water that can fill them to the full—Jesus.
In John 7, Jesus went to the Festival of Tabernacles (V. 10), commemorating God’s provision during the Israelites’ wilderness wanderings. This festival included a water-pouring rite symbolizing the fruitfulness that only moisture produces and foreshadowed the spiritual rain the Messiah would bring. Jesus fulfills what the ancient festival anticipated. “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (VV. 37-38).
At times, we can feel like empty containers. Weary from caregiving. Worn from working. Exhausted by everyday responsibilities. The unending demands draw us dry! But when we live in relationship with God, He provides springs of living water within our hearts to refresh and refuel us no matter how many cares and concerns try to drain us.

뉴올리언스 박물관의 한 투어 가이드는 오래된 플라스틱 병을 깃털이나 심지어 전등갓 모양처럼 잘라 만든 다채로운 작품들 사이에서 이러한 재료를 사용한 배경에 대해 설명했습니다. “고난을 겪은 도시답게 우리는 우리가 가진 것을 사용하여 기쁨과 아름다움을 창조하는 법을 배웠습니다. 우리는 힘든 시기에만 초점을 맞추지 않습니다. 우리는 회복을 위한 노력을 기념하고 축하합니다.”

In the midst of colorful creations made from old plastic bottles cut to resemble feathers and even lampshades, a tour guide at a New Orleans Museum shared the thinking behind the use of such material. “For a city that’s had such hardship, we’ve also learned to use what we have to create joy and beauty. We don’t focus only on the hard times; we celebrate the resilience.”
Nehemiah and the Israelites also faced hardship but resiliently pressed on in God’s joy. They’d been captured and taken away from their home, and at last were able to return to Jerusalem from exile (NEHEMIAH 3:7-12, 18). But upon arriving, they still faced opposition to rebuild the wall that protected Jerusalem (NEHEMIAH 6). Even after the wall was completed and they gathered for a celebration, hearing the words of God’s law, their spirits were heavy. They were “weeping as they listened” (8:9). But Nehemiah reminded them that they could find joy and strength in God—remembering who He was and what He’d brought them through. Nehemiah told them, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (V. 10).
Focusing on God can give us “great joy” and strength too, especially when our circumstances seem dire. God’s ability, character, and the Scriptures can renew our minds and bring us joy (V. 12)—providing the strength and resilience we need.

감사의 마음 키우기
“아빠, 물 좀 갖다줄래요?” 막내딸이 물었습니다. 나는 “물론이지.”하며 물을 한 컵 가득 가져다주었습니다. 딸은 말없이 컵을 받아 마셨습니다. 그러자 큰 딸도 같은 부탁을 했습니다. 물을 가져다 주었는데 큰 딸도 아무 말이 없었습니다. 나는 안되겠다 싶어 “누가 ‘고맙다’고 말할거니? 그게 왜 그렇게 어렵지?”하고 목소리를 높였습니다.
때로는 부모가 짜증낼 때가 바로 하나님께서 역사하실 좋은 기회가 됩니다. 나는 성령님이 즉시 팔꿈치로 나를 건드리는 것을 느꼈습니다. “그래, 애덤아, ‘감사합니다.’라고 말하는 게 왜 그렇게 어렵지?” 내가 딱 걸렸습니다. 감사가 부족한 것은 아이들만의 문제가 아니라 나의 문제인 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
감사하다는 말이 왜 그렇게 어려운지는 모르겠지만, 분명 인간의 타고난 본성의 일부인 것 같습니다. 그러나 시편에서 우리는 감사로 성장하는 사람들을 볼 수 있습니다. 다윗과 다른 여러 사람이 수많은 시련 가운데 하나님을 자주 찬양합니다. 그리고 그들의 감사 앞에 자주 나오는 구절 하나가 있습니다. “내가 ... 하리이다.”
시편 9편 1절에서 다윗은 자기 의지를 가지고 감사를 표합니다. “내가 전심으로 여호와께 감사하오며 주의 모든 기사를 전하리이다.” 우리는 감사를 주로 감정의 영역으로 생각합니다. 그러나 다윗은 감사가 또한 ‘의지적 선택’임을 알게 해줍니다.
다윗처럼 우리도 의지를 가지고 감사를 ‘습관화’하면 우리도 삶의 모든 면에서 하나님의 선하심을 깨닫고 감사하는 마음을 키워 나갈 수 있습니다.

CULTIVATING GRATITUDE
“Dad, can you get me some water?” my youngest daughter asked. “Sure,” I said, bringing her a full cup. She took it wordlessly. Then my oldest daughter made the same request. She didn’t respond either after I got her some water. Annoyed, I blurted out, “Is anyone going to say, ‘Thank you’? Why is that so hard?”
Sometimes there’s nothing like parental frustration to open the door for God to work. Immediately I felt the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit: Yes, Adam, why is it so hard to say, “Thank you”? Busted. Turns out a lack of gratitude isn’t just my kids’ problem; it’s mine too.
I don’t know why saying thank you can be so hard, but it certainly seems to be a part of the human condition. In the psalms, however, we see a model for growing in gratitude. There, David and others often praise God amid myriad trials. And a particular phrase frequently precedes their thanksgiving: “I will . . . .”
In Psalm 9:1, David deliberately chooses thankfulness: “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” We might be prone to think of gratitude primarily as a feeling. But David reminds us that it’s also a choice.
Like David, as we choose to cultivate a habit of giving thanks, we can gradually grow to recognize and appreciate God’s goodness in every aspect of life.

한 노인이 뉴욕의 거리를 조깅하다 어느 노숙자의 도와달라는 팻말 옆에 놓인 낡은 운동화를 보았습니다. 자기 신발과 사이즈가 비슷하다는 것을 안 노인은 젊은 노숙자에게 자기 신발과 (양말까지!) 벗어주고는 맨발로 집에 걸어갔습니다. 그는 현장을 떠나면서 이런 말을 남겼습니다. “나는 한평생 축복을 받았습니다. 하나님께서 나에게 큰 은혜를 베푸셨으니 나도 당신을 축복합니다.”
이 노인이 하나님께서 은혜를 주셨기 때문에 다른 사람에게 친절을 베푼 것처럼, 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 “[우리] 자신을... 자비로 옷입으라”(골로새서 3:12) 하는 부름을 받았습니다. 우리가 무슨 행동이나 말을 할 때엔 사실상 “주 예수님을 대신하듯” 해야 합니다(17절). 우리는 친절함에 더하여 “자비, 겸손, 온유, 인내”(12절)와 같은 성품을 지녀야 합니다. 성령의 열매(갈라디아서 5:22-23)는 우리 안에 성령이 거하심으로 우리 안에서 자라는 것입니다. 그리고 이 열매는 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 다른 사람들에게 흘려보낼 때 나타나며, “온전하게 매는 띠”(골로새서 3:14)가 되어 이 모든 선한 것을 하나로 묶어 줍니다.

POINTING TO JESUS
An older man jogging down a street in New York City stopped in his tracks when he noticed a pair of battered sneakers placed near a homeless man’s sign requesting help. When the jogger learned that the two men wore a similar size, he gave the younger, homeless man the shoes (and socks!) off his feet and walked home barefoot. But not before explaining, “I’ve been blessed my whole life. God has been very good to me, so I feel like I should bless you too.”
Just as this man showed kindness to another because God had been good to him, so too believers in Jesus are called to “clothe [our]selves with . . . kindness” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). In fact, in whatever we do or say, we’re to do it as “a representative of the Lord Jesus” (V. 17 NLT). Along with kindness, we’re also to embody the characteristics of “compassion, . . . humility, gentleness and patience” (V. 12). The fruit of the Spirit (GALATIANS 5:22-23) grows in us because we have the Spirit dwelling inside us; and this fruit is evidenced by God’s love for us flowing out to others—binding all these virtues “together in perfect unity” (COLOSSIANS 3:14).
Like the jogger, may we be on alert for opportunities to be kind—an encouraging word, a thoughtful act, or even giving the shoes off our feet—and as we do, let’s point to Jesus (V. 17).

UNFORGETTABLE LESSONS
Corey Brooks—“The Rooftop Pastor”—spent 343 days living on the rooftop of his church on Chicago’s south side to inspire community transformation. Online, Brooks posted a “shout-out” to his elementary school teacher Joe Stokes, who taught him four unforgettable lessons: the power of perseverance, the importance of integrity, the value of community engagement, and the impact of education.
By embracing Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs 3, we likewise can strive to live in ways that have community impact. Solomon taught four lessons that are just right for those who trust in God and are called to be a positive force: “Trust in the Lord” (V. 5); “fear the Lord and shun evil” (V. 7); “honor the Lord with your wealth” (V. 9); “do not despise the Lord’s discipline” (V. 11). Such wisdom compels us to be God-focused, but there are peopletouching dimensions to our faith too.
In Matthew 5:3-12, Jesus, the ultimate embodiment of wisdom, eloquently described the internal disposition of believers in Jesus. Furthermore, He reminded them that they were high-impact people. “You are the salt of the earth” (V. 13). “You are the light of the world” (V. 14). As such, we are honored to “Let [our] light shine . . . that they may see [our] good deeds and glorify [our] Father in heaven” (V. 16).

어느 화창한 오후, 나는 수단에서 온 옆집 가족과 함께 분필로 길바닥에 그림을 그리고 있었습니다. 그때 그 옆집에서 몇 사람이 모여 예배를 드리며 찬송을 부르는 소리가 들려왔습니다. 나와 이야기를 나누던 아이 엄마가 무슨 일인가 궁금해 해서 우리는 함께 그리로 가 귀를 기울였습니다. 그러자 그 집 사람들이 예배에 함께하도록 우리를 초대했습니다. 한 청년이 세례를 받기 위해 물을 가득 담은 수조 안에 서 있었습니다. 그는 자신의 죄를 용서받고 예수님을 따르기로 결심한 간증을 했습니다.
우리가 바로 이웃집 마당에서 구원의 간증을 들을 수 있었던 특별한 기회였습니다. 그때 그 사람들이 바로 우리 동네의 교회였습니다.
예수님은 지금도 전세계에 자신의 교회를 세우고 계십니다. 승천하기 전, 예수님이 제자들에게 말씀하시기를 그들에게 성령을 보내어 그들 안에 거하게 하고 그들은 “땅 끝까지”(사도행전 1:8) 가서 증인이 될 것이라고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들의 성령 충만한 설교와 가르침을 통해 그의 교회를 세우신다고 하셨습니다. 그리고 하나님은 곧 “구원받는 사람을 날마다 더하게”(2:47) 하셨습니다.
우리가 이웃과 함께 믿음을 따라 살며, 예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 일을 다른 사람들에게 전함으로 그의 교회가 될 때에 그리스도의 교회를 세우는 일에 동참할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리가 죄 사함을 받고 영생을 얻도록 자신의 생명을 내어주시고 부활하셨습니다. 그리고 오늘날 그의 교회에서 우리가 다른 사람들을 섬기는 법을 배우도록 도와주십니다.

BEING THE CHURCH
On a sunny afternoon, I drew with sidewalk chalk with the Sudanese family next door. We could hear singing coming from the house next to theirs, where a small group holds worship services. The young mom I was talking with was curious about what was going on, so she and I walked over and listened in. They invited us to gather with them. A young man, standing in a tank filled with water for baptism, spoke about receiving forgiveness for his sins and committing himself to follow Jesus.
This was a unique opportunity for us to hear a testimony of salvation in the yard right next door. This group was being the church in our neighborhood.
Jesus is building His church around the world. In the days before His ascension, He told His followers that He would send the Spirit to live in them and that they would be His witnesses “to the ends of the earth” (ACTS 1:8). He would build His church through their Spirit-empowered preaching and teaching. And immediately God began to add “to their number daily those who were being saved” (2:47).
We can be a part of building Christ’s church by being His church as we live out our faith in our neighborhoods and share with others what He’s done for us. He gave His life and was resurrected so that we might be forgiven and have eternal life. And He’ll help us learn how to serve others in His church today.

이러한 은혜로운 환대는 약속의 땅에 정착하기 전 이스라엘 백성에게 주신 하나님의 명령을 떠올리게 합니다. 그들은 농경 사회에서 추수의 중요성을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 다음해 추수까지 버티려면 식량 한 톨이 중요했습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 추수할 때 혹 떨구고 온 것이 있더라도 되돌아가 가져오지 말라고 하셨습니다. “나그네와 고아와 과부를 위하여 남겨두라” (신명기 24:19)고 하셨습니다. 가진 것이 많기 때문에 주는 것이 아니라 하나님이 주실 것을 믿는 마음으로 베풀라는 것입니다. “그리하면 네 하나님 여호와께서 네 손으로 하는 모든 일에 복을 내리시리라”(19절). 하나님은 언제나 풍족하신 분입니다.
그들은 이렇게 남을 맞아주면서 그들도 “애굽 땅에서 종 되었던 것”(22절)을 상기했습니다. 우리가 그런 압제는 당하지 않았을 지는 몰라도 우리는 모두 외톨이가 되거나 궁핍한 처지에 놓였던 경험은 있습니다. 다른 사람들에게 베풀 때, 우리는 우리에게 가장 기본적으로 필요한 죄로부터의 자유를 기억하는 것이 좋습니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으셨느니라”(로마서 5:8).

HOSPITABLE GENEROSITY
A few years ago, our church hosted refugees fleeing their country because of a change in their political leadership. Entire families came with only what they could fit in a small bag. Several of our church families opened their homes, some with little room to spare.
Such gracious hospitality echoes God’s command to the Israelites before they inhabited the promised land. As an agricultural society, they understood the importance of the harvest. Every bit of food would be essential to get them through until next year’s harvest. God told the Israelites when harvesting not to go back to retrieve what they may have missed. “Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow” (DEUTERONOMY 24:19). They were to practice generosity not by giving when they knew they had enough but by giving out of a heart of trusting in God’s provision “so that the Lord [their] God may bless [them] in all the work of their hands” (V. 19). God always has enough.
The practice of hospitality also reminded them that they had been “slaves in Egypt” (V. 22). While we may not have experienced such oppression, we’ve all experienced being an outsider or being in need. As we give to others, we do well to remember our most basic need: freedom from our sin. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ROMANS 5:8).
When we’re hospitable, we celebrate our generous God, who “loves a cheerful giver” (2 CORINTHIANS 9:7).

우리의 기도 생활도 때로는 그럴 수 있습니다. 너무나 막연한 기도를 하는 것입니다. 다니엘은 이와 반대로 자신이 원하는 것을 다니엘서 9장에서 담대하게 말하고 있습니다. 그는 먼저 자기 백성의 죄를 고백합니다. “우리는 이미 범죄하여 패역하였습니다”(5절). 그리고는 이렇게 간구합니다. “우리 하나님이여 지금 주의 종의 기도와 간구를 들으소서”(17절). “주여 들으소서 주여 용서하소서 주여 귀를 기울이시고 행하소서”(19절). 다니엘에게 빚진 것이 하나도 없는 하나님이셨지만, 다니엘은 이렇게 하나님의 “큰 긍휼”(18절)을 신뢰하며 자신이 소망하는 것을 모두 하나님께 간구할 수 있었습니다.

PRAY WHAT’S ON YOUR HEART
Brenda and Eddie got in the car and began their Thursday evening ritual. “Where would you like to eat?” “Oh, Eddie, I don’t care, anywhere is fine, really.” Eddie’s been here before. “Okay, how about The Windmill?” Brenda bristles. “No, anywhere but there!” Eddie sighs. “So where, then?” Brenda insists, “Really, anywhere is fine.”
It’s the stuff of comedy sketches, humorous from a distance because we know how maddening it is in the moment.
Sometimes it can be that way in our prayer lives too. We’re too vague. In contrast, the prayer in Daniel 9 reveals Daniel boldly saying what he wants. First, he confesses the sins of his people: “We have sinned and done wrong” (V. 5). Then he makes his requests. “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant” (V. 17). “Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act” (V. 19). God owed nothing to Daniel, but such was Daniel’s trust in God’s “great mercy” (V. 18), that he felt free to bring the full weight of his desires to Him.
It’s always right to pray “not as I will, but as you will,” as Jesus prayed to His Father the night before He was crucified (MATTHEW 26:39). But there are also times when saying what we want is the way forward. God honors our boldness when we come before Him with repentant hearts. So be bold, pray what’s on your heart, and entrust it to the God of great mercy.
