편애

우리 시동생은 1200마일 가량 (약 1900킬로미터) 떨어진 콜로라도 산맥 지역에 살고 있습니다. 멀리 있어도 가족들은 유쾌하고 착한 게리츠를 항상 사랑합니다. 내가 기억하기론, 형제들은 엄마의 관심을 독차지하는 그에 대해 스스럼없이 농담을 하곤 했습니다. 몇 년 전 그들은 “엄마가 가장 좋아하는 사람은 나”라고 쓰인 티셔츠를 그에게 선물하기도 했지요. 형제들끼리는 웃어넘길 만한 일이었지만, 사실 편애는 가볍게 여길 문제가 아닙니다.

창세기 37장에는 야곱이 그의 아들 요셉에게 화려한 외투를 준 일화가 있습니다(3절). 그것은 다른 자녀들에게 요셉이 특별하다는 것을 보여주는 행동으로, “요셉은 내가 ‘가장 좋아하는’ 아들이다.”라는 메시지를 노골적으로 드러내는 것이었습니다.

편애를 보이면 가족 간에 심각한 문제를 일으킬 수 있습니다. 야곱의 어머니 리브가는 아들 에서보다 야곱을 편애했고, 그것은 두 형제의 갈등으로 이어졌습니다(25:28). 야곱은 아내 레아보다 라헬(요셉의 어머니)을 더 사랑함으로써 갈등과 상심을 불러 일으켜 가족 간의 불화를 지속시켰습니다 (29:30-31). 이런 행동들이 요셉의 형제들로 하여금 동생을 멸시하고 살인까지 모의하게 한 좋지 않은 단초가 된 것은 의심의 여지가 없습니다(37:18).

사람들과의 관계에 있어서 편견 없이 공정하게 대하는 것이 때로는 어려울 지도 모릅니다. 하지만 우리는 누구나 편애 없이 대하고, 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 사랑하신 것 같이 우리 삶 속의 모든 사람들을 사랑하는 것을 목표로 삼아야 합니다(요한복음 13:34).

THE FAVORITE

My husband’s brother lives about 1,200 miles away in the mountains of Colorado. Despite the distance, Gerrits has always been a beloved family member because of his great sense of humor and kind heart. As long as I can remember, however, his siblings have good-naturedly joked about his favored status in their mother’s eyes. Several years ago, they even presented him with a T-shirt sporting the words, “I’m Mom’s Favorite.” While we all enjoyed the silliness of our siblings, true favoritism is no joking matter.

In Genesis 37, we read about Jacob who gave his son Joseph an ornate coat—an indication to his other children that Joseph was special (V. 3). Without a hint of subtlety, the coat’s message shouted: “Joseph is my favorite son.”

Displaying favoritism can be crippling in a family. Jacob’s mother, Rebekah, had favored him over her son Esau, leading to conflict between the two brothers (25:28). The dysfunction was perpetuated when Jacob favored his wife Rachel (Joseph’s mother) over his wife Leah, creating discord and heartache (29:30–31). No doubt this pattern was the unhealthy basis for Joseph’s brothers to despise their younger brother, even plotting his murder (37:18).

When it comes to our relationships, we may sometimes find it tricky to be objective. But our goal must be to treat everyone without favoritism and to love every person in our life as our Father loves us (JOHN 13:34).- CINDY HESS KASPER

인생의 급물살 헤쳐 나가기

급류 래프팅 가이드가 소리쳤습니다. “왼쪽에 있는 분들, 모두 앞으로 세 번 힘차게 노를 저으세요!” 왼쪽에 앉은 사람들은 지시를 따랐고 래프트는 거친 소용돌이를 벗어났습니다. 몇 시간 동안 우리는 가이드의 지시를 따르는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 알게 되었습니다. 그의 꾸준한 지시 덕분에 래프팅 경험이 거의 없던 우리 여섯 사람은 서로 도와가면서 거친 강물을 따라 내려가며 가장 안전한 코스를 찾을 수 있었습니다.

우리 인생도 급물살을 탈 때가 있습니다. 그렇지 않습니까? 순탄한 항해를 하다가도 한순간에 갑자기 마주친 소용돌이를 피하려고 미친 듯이 노를 젓기도 합니다. 그런 긴박한 순간에 우리는 격동의 시기를 잘 지나도록 도와줄 능숙한 가이드의 믿음직한 음성이 필요함을 절실히 깨닫게 됩니다.

시편 32편에서 하나님은 우리에게 그 음성이 되어 주신다고 약속 하십니다. “내가 너를 지도하여 네 갈 길을 가르치겠다”(8절, 현대인의 성경). 앞에 있는 구절들을 보면 우리 죄를 자복하고(5절) 주님을 찾으며 기도 하는 것도(6절) 주님의 음성을 듣는 데 역할을 합니다. 그럼에도 나는 “너를 주목하여 훈계하리로다”(8절)라고 하나님이 약속하신 사실에서 위안을 얻습니다. 그 약속은 하나님의 인도하심은 그분의 사랑에서 나오는 것임을 잊지 않게 합니다. 시편 32편 끝 부분에서 시편 기자는 “여호와를 신뢰하는 자에게는 인자하심이 두르리로다”(10절)라고 말합니다. 그리고 우리가 하나님을 신뢰하면 인생의 험난한 구간을 지날 때 우리를 인도해 주신다는 하나님의 약속 안에서 안식을 얻을 수 있습니다.

NAVIGATING LIFE’S RAPIDS

“Everybody on the left, give me three strong forward strokes!” our whitewater raft guide shouted. Those on the left dug in, pulling our raft away from a churning vortex. For several hours, we’d learned the importance of listening to our guide’s instructions. His steady voice enabled six people with little rafting experience to work together to plot the safest course down a raging river.

Life has its share of whitewater rapids, doesn’t it? One moment, it’s smooth sailing. Then, in a flash, we’re paddling like mad to avoid suddenly swirling whirlpools. Those tense moments make us keenly aware of our need for a skilled guide, a trusted voice to help us navigate turbulent times.

In Psalm 32, God promises to be that voice: “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go” (V. 8). Backing up, we see that confessing our sins (V. 5) and prayerfully seeking Him (V. 6) play a role in hearing
Him too. Still, I take comfort in the fact that God promises, “I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (V. 8), a reminder that His guidance flows from His love. Near the end of the chapter, the psalmist concludes, “The Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts him” (V. 10). And as we trust Him, we can rest in His promise to guide us through life’s rockiest passages. - ADAM HOLZ

의사는 분리된 그녀의 망막을 치료할 수 없다고 했습니다. 그러나 시력을 잃은 후 15년 간 점자를 익히며 지팡이와 안내견에 의지하여 살아온 몬태나에 사는 이 여인의 인생이 그녀의 남편이 다른 안과의사에게 한 짧은 질문 하나로 바뀌었습니다. “제 아내가 나을 수 있을까요?” 대답은 “예” 였습니다. 의사는 그녀가 흔한 눈 질환인 백내장을 앓고 있다는 것을 발견하고 오른쪽 눈을 수술하였습니다. 다음날 안대를 떼고 잰 시력은 2.0 이었습니다. 두 번째 왼쪽 눈 수술도 마찬가지로 성공적이었습니다.

짧은 질문 하나가 나병을 앓던 용맹한 군인 나아만의 삶도 바꿨습니다. 나아만은 엘리사 선지자가 “요단강에 몸을 일곱 번 씻으라 네 살이 회복되어 깨끗하리라”(열왕기하 5:10)고 한 처방에 몹시 화를 냈습니다. 그러자 종들이 장군에게 “선지자가 당신에게 큰 일을 행하라 말하였더면 행하지 아니하였으리이까”(13절)라고 짧게 물었습니다. 이에 마음을 돌린 나아만이 몸을 씻으니 “그의 살이 어린 아이의 살 같이 회복되어 깨끗하게”(14절) 되었습니다.

우리는 살면서 때때로 하나님께 물으려 하지 않기 때문에 문제를 안고 고생할 때가 있습니다. ‘도와주실까? 가야 하나? 인도해주실까?’ 하나님은 복잡한 질문을 해야만 들어주시는 분이 아닙니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 “그들이 부르기 전에 내가 응답하겠다”(이사야 65:24)고 약속하셨습니다. 그러니 오늘 하나님께 그냥 물어보십시오.

SIMPLY ASK

Her doctor said her detached retinas couldn’t be repaired. But after living without sight for fifteen years—learning Braille, and using a cane and service dog—a Montana woman’s life changed when her husband asked another eye doctor a simple question: could she be helped? The answer was yes. As the doctor discovered, the woman had a common eye condition, cataracts, which the doctor removed from her right eye. When the eye patch came off the next day, her vision was 20/20. A second surgery for her left eye met with equal success.

A simple question also changed the life of Naaman, a powerful military man with leprosy. But Naaman raged arrogantly at the prophet Elisha’s instructions to “wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored” (2 KINGS 5:10). Naaman’s servants, however, asked the military leader a simple question: “If the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it?” (V. 13). Persuaded, Naaman washed “and his flesh was restored and became clean” (V. 14).

In our lives, sometimes we struggle with a problem because we won’t ask God. Will You help? Should I go? Will You lead? He doesn’t require complicated questions from us to help. “Before they call I will answer,” God promised His people (ISAIAH 65:24). So today, simply ask Him. - PATRICIA RAYBON

구원의 소망

그 남자는 구원받지 못할 사람으로 보였습니다. 여덟 번의 총격사건으로 여섯 명을 죽였고 1970년대에 뉴욕시를 공포에 떨게 한 1,500건의 방화를 저질렀습니다. 그는 범행 현장에 경찰을 조롱하는 편지도 남겨놓았습니다. 결국 체포된 그는 살인 죄 하나 하나에 대해 25년에서 종신형에 이르는 선고를 연속해서 받았습니다.

그러나 하나님은 이 사람에게 다가오셨습니다. 그는 지금 그리스도를 믿는 사람이 되어 매일 성경을 읽으며 시간을 보내면서, 피해자의 가족들에게 깊이 사죄하며 쉬지 않고 그들을 위해 기도합니다. 구원과는 거리가 멀어 보였던 이 사람은 40년 이상을 감옥에 있었지만 하나님 안에서 희망을 찾고 “나는 예수님 이 분 안에서 자유를 얻었다”라고 말합니다.

성경은 바뀔 것 같지 않았던 다른 한 사람의 이야기를 하고 있습니다. 다메섹으로 가는 길에 부활하신 그리스도를 만나기 전 사울(후에 바울 사도가 된)은 ‘주의 제자들에 대하여 위협과 살기가 등등한’ 사람이었습니다(사도행전 9:1). 그러나 예수님에 의해 바울의 마음과 삶은 변화되었고(17-18절), 역사상 예수님의 가장 강력한 증인 중의 한 사람이 되었습니다. 한때 그리스도인들을 죽이려고 모의했던 사람이 소망의 복음을 전하는 일에 자신의 삶을 바쳤습니다.

구원은 ‘언제나’ 하나님의 기적의 역사입니다. 어떤 사람들에게는 더 큰 사연들이 있을 수 있지만 근본적인 진리는 다 똑같습니다. 그것은 우리는 아무도 하나님의 용서를 받을 자격이 없지만 예수님이 능력의 구원자가 되신다는 것입니다! 예수님은 “자기를 힘입어 하나님께 나아가는 자들을 온전히 구원하십니다”(히브리서 7:25).

REDEMPTION’S HOPE

The man seemed beyond redemption. His crimes included eight shootings (killing six) and starting nearly 1,500 fires that terrorized New York City in the 1970s. He left letters at his crime scenes taunting the police, and he was eventually apprehended and given consecutive sentences of twenty-five years to life for each murder.

Yet God reached down to this man. Today he is a believer in Christ who spends time daily in the Scriptures, has expressed deep regret to his victims’ families, and continues to pray for them. Although imprisoned
for more than four decades, this man who seemed beyond redemption finds hope in God and claims, “My freedom is found in one word: Jesus.”

Scripture tells of another unlikely conversion. Before he met the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, Saul (who later became the apostle Paul) was “breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples” (ACTS 9:1). Yet Paul’s heart and life were transformed by Jesus (VV. 17–18), and he became one of the most powerful witnesses for Him in history. The man who once plotted the death of Christians devoted his life to spreading the hope of the gospel.

Redemption is always a miraculous work of God. Some stories are more dramatic, but the underlying truth remains the same: None of us deserve His forgiveness, yet Jesus is a powerful Savior! He “[saves] completely those who come to God through him” (HEBREWS 7:25). - JAMES BANKS

내리 사랑

우리 딸은 낸시 드류에 푹 빠져서 지난 3주 동안 소녀 탐정이 나오는 그 소설을 적어도 12권을 읽었습니다. 딸은 탐정 이야기를 정말 좋아합니다. 나도 낸시 드류를 좋아했습니다. 1960년대에 어머니가 읽었던 파란색으로 제본된 책들이 아직도 어머니 집 책꽂이에 있습니다.

그런 애착이 전해지는 것을 보니 내가 또 어떤 것을 물려주고 있는지 궁금해집니다. 디모데후서에서 바울은 디모데를 생각하면 그의 할머니와 어머니에게 있었던 “신실한 믿음”이 생각난다고 썼습니다. 나는 딸이 탐정소설을 좋아하는 것과 함께, 할머니 할아버지가 했던 것처럼 “섬기고” 기도하며 “예수 그리스도 안에 있는 생명의 약속”(디모데후서 1:1)을 붙잡는 믿음을 물려받기를 소원합니다.

LOVE PASSED DOWN

My daughter has become fascinated with Nancy Drew. In the last three weeks, she’s read at least a dozen of the novels featuring the girl sleuth. She comes by her love of detective stories honestly: I loved Nancy Drew too, and the blue-bound copies that my mom read in the 1960s still line a shelf in her house.

Seeing this affection passed down makes me wonder what else I’m passing down. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul wrote that when he thought of Timothy, he was reminded of the “sincere faith” that lived in Timothy’s grandmother and mother. I hope that along with her love of mysteries, my daughter is also inheriting faith—that she will “serve” as her grandparents have, that she will pray, and that she will hold on “to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus” (2 TIMOTHY 1:1).

I also see hope here for those who don’t have parents or grandparents who know Jesus. Though Timothy’s father isn’t mentioned, Paul calls Timothy his “dear son” (V. 2). Those who don’t have families to pass down faith can still find parents and grandparents in the church—people who will help us figure out how to live a “holy life” (V. 9), and to embrace the gifts God has given us of “power, love and self-discipline” (V. 7). Truly, we all have a beautiful inheritance. - AMY PETERSON

2012년 필립스와 크랙과 딘은 “심장에게 다시 뛰라고 하라”는 곡을 발표했습니다. 그 노래는 한 심장외과 전문의의 실화에서 영감을 얻어 만들어졌습니다. 의사는 어떤 환자의 심장을 떼어내 고친 후 심장을 환자의 가슴 제 자리에 옮기고 다시 뛰도록 부드럽게 마사지를 시작했습니다. 하지만 심장은 다시 뛰려고 하지 않았습니다. 더 강한 조치들이 취해졌지만, 심장은 여전히 뛰지 않았습니다. 마지막으로 의사는 의식이 없는 환자 옆에 무릎 꿇고 말했습니다. “존슨씨, 나는 당신의 수술담당 의사입니다. 수술은 잘 끝났고 심장도 정상입니다. 이제 심장에게 다시 뛰라고 말하세요.” 그러자 그녀의 심장이 뛰기 시작했습니다.

능력 있는 의사이신 우리 하나님께서 우리의 심장(마음)을 고쳐주셨습니다 (시편 103:3). 그러므로 두려움이나 우울증을 겪거나 비난을 받을 때, 어쩌면 우리도 우리의 영혼에 이렇게 말해야 할 것입니다. ‘앞으로 나아가라! 강해져라! 연약한 심장아, 다시 뛰어라.’

BEAT AGAIN

In 2012, Phillips, Craig and Dean released their song “Tell Your Heart to Beat Again.” It was inspired by the true story of a heart surgeon. After removing a patient’s heart to repair it, the surgeon returned it to the chest and began gently massaging it back to life. But the heart wouldn’t restart. More intense measures followed, but the heart still wouldn’t beat. Finally, the surgeon knelt next to the unconscious patient and spoke to her: “Miss Johnson,” he said, “this is your surgeon. The operation went perfectly. Your heart has been repaired. Now tell your heart to beat again.” Her heart began to beat.

The idea that we could tell our physical heart to do something might seem strange, but it has spiritual parallels. “Why, my soul, are you downcast?” the psalmist says to himself. “Put your hope in God” (PSALM 42:5).
“Return to your rest, my soul,” says another, “for the Lord has been good to you” (116:7). After beating Israel’s enemies in war, Deborah, a judge, revealed that she too had spoken to her heart during battle. “March on, my soul,” she told it, “be strong!” (JUDGES 5:21), because the Lord had promised victory (4:6–7).

Our capable Surgeon has mended our heart (PSALM 103:3). So when fear, depression, or condemnation come, perhaps we too should address our souls and say: March on! Be strong! Feeble heart, beat again. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

뉴저지 배스킹릿지 장로교회 옆의 ‘홀리 오크’ 나무는 그 자리에 육백 년이 넘게 서 있다가 베이게 되었습니다. 나무가 한창 무성할 때에는 구불구불 자란 가지들이 높고 넓게 뻗어 있었고, 시원한 바람이 녹색 이파리와 도토리들을 스쳐 지나갔습니다. 그리고 바람이 불어 생기는 틈새로 햇살이 비집고 들어오면 나무 그늘 위에 빛이 무늬를 만들며 춤추었습니다. 그러나 땅 밑으로 그 나무의 진정한 위용을 보여주는 뿌리가 있습니다. 참나무의 원뿌리는 수직으로 곧게 자라면서 영양분을 안정적으로 공급합니다. 그리고 그 곧은 뿌리에서 수많은 잔뿌리들이 옆으로 뻗어 나와 나무에 평생토록 수분과 양분을 공급합니다. 이 복잡한 뿌리 구조는 종종 나무보다 더 크게 자라나 생명줄로서, 그리고 나무의 몸통을 든든히 받치는 닻의 역할을 합니다.

이 거대한 참나무처럼 우리에게 생명을 주어 성장하게 하는 것은 대부분 보이지 않는 곳에서 일어납니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 씨 뿌리는 자의 비유를 설명하실 때 하나님 아버지와의 개인적인 관계 안에 단단히 심겨지는 것이 중요하다고 강조하셨습니다. 우리가 성경 전체에서 보여주는 하나님의 지식 안에서 자라갈 때 성령께서 우리 신앙의 뿌리를 붙들어줍니다. 하나님은 그를 따르는 자들을 도와 끊임없이 변하는 환경이나 시련, 박해, 걱정 속에서도 계속 번성케 하십니다(마태복음 13:18-23).

우리 사랑의 하나님 아버지는 우리의 마음에 그분의 말씀으로 영양을 공급하십니다. 성령께서 우리의 성품을 변화시키실 때 하나님은 우리의 뿌리 깊은 신앙의 열매가 주위 사람들에게 확연히 보이게 해주십니다.

DEEP-ROOTED FAITH

The Holy Oak stood next to Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church in New Jersey for more than six hundred years until it had to be removed. At its prime, the twisting branches spanned high and wide. Cool breezes rustled its green leaves and acorns. The sun peeked through windblown gaps, creating dancing glimmers of light in the shade below its canopy. But beneath the ground’s surface lay its true magnificence—its root
system. An oak’s main root grows vertically, securing a reliable supply of nourishment. From that taproot, a mass of roots spreads horizontally to supply the tree with a lifetime of moisture and nutrients. This intricate root system often grows more massive than the tree it supports and serves as a lifeline and an anchor for stabilizing the trunk.

Like the mighty oak, most of our life-giving growth occurs beneath the surface. When Jesus explained the parable of the sower to His disciples, He emphasized the importance of being firmly planted in a personal relationship with the Father. As we grow in the knowledge of God as revealed through the Scriptures, our faith roots are sustained by His Spirit. God helps His followers thrive through ever-changing circumstances,
trials, persecution, and worry (MATTHEW 13:18–23).

Our loving Father nourishes our hearts with His Word. As His Spirit transforms our character, He makes sure the fruit of our deep-rooted faith becomes evident to people around us. - XOCHITL DIXON

빚을 갚아주는 자

2019년 조지아주 애틀랜타에 있는 모어하우스 대학의 졸업식에 참석한 사람들은 한 마디로 정신이 멍해졌습니다. 졸업식 연사로 나온 사람이 본인과 가족이 수백만 달러를 기부해 졸업생 모두의 학자금 대출을 갚아주겠다고 말한 것입니다. 기뻐서 울고 환호성을 지르는 졸업생 가운데에는 10만 달러의 융자가 있는 학생도 있었습니다.

우리 대부분은 집이나 자동차, 교육비, 의료비, 또는 다른 이유로 어떤 형태로든 빚을 진 경험들이 있습니다. 그러나 “완불” 도장이 찍힌 영수증을 받고 너무나 홀가분해졌던 기분도 잘 압니다.

요한은 예수님이 “충성된 증인으로 죽은 자들 가운데에서 먼저 나시고 땅의 임금들의 머리가 되신” 분이라고 말하고는 예수님이 빚을 다 갚아 주신 일을 드높여 시인했습니다. “예수 그리스도께서는 우리를 사랑하시며, 자기의 피로 우리의 죄에서 우리를 해방하여 주셨습니다”(요한계시록 1:5, 새번역). 이 말은 단순하지만 깊은 뜻을 담고 있습니다. 모어하우스 대학 졸업식에서의 놀라웠던 소식보다 예수님의 죽음으로(십자가에서 피를 흘리심) 우리의 죄성과 욕망과 행실로 받아야 할 형벌에서 우리를 자유롭게 한다는 것이 더 좋은 소식입니다. 그 빚이 갚아졌기 때문에 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 용서받고 하나님 나라 가족의 일원이 됩니다(6절). 이 좋은 소식은 모든 소식 중 최고의 소식입니다!

DEBT ERASER

Stunned is just one word that describes the response of the crowd at the 2019 graduation ceremony at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. The commencement speaker announced that he and his family would be donating millions of dollars to erase the student debt of the entire graduating class. One student—with $100,000 in loans—was among the overwhelmed graduates who expressed their joys with tears and shouts.

Most of us have experienced indebtedness in some form—having to pay for homes, vehicles, education, medical expenses, or other things. But we’ve also known the amazing relief of a bill being stamped “PAID”!

After declaring Jesus as “the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth,” John worshipfully acknowledged His debt-erasing work: “To him who loves us and has freed us from
our sins by his blood” (REVELATION 1:5). This statement is simple but its meaning is profound. Better than the surprise announcement the Morehouse graduating class heard is the good news that the death of Jesus (the shedding of His blood on the cross) frees us from the penalty that our sinful attitudes, desires, and deeds deserve. Because that debt has been satisfied, those who believe in Jesus are forgiven and become a part of God’s kingdom family (V. 6). This good news is the best news of all! - ARTHUR JACKSON

자신을 과소 평가하는 것

나이 어린 남자가 팀의 주장이 되었습니다. 수염도 거의 나지 않은 순한 남자가 이제 프로 스포츠팀을 이끌게 된 것입니다. 그의 첫 번째 기자회견은 실망적이었습니다. 그는 코치와 팀 동료들에게 계속 미루면서 그저 자신의 책임을 다 하겠다는 상투적인 말로만 얼버무렸습니다. 그 시즌 동안 팀의 성적은 부진했고, 결국 시즌 끝에 그 어린 주장은 다른 팀으로 이적되었습니다. 그는 자신에게 리더의 지위가 맡겨졌다는 사실을 심각하게 받아들이지 않았거나, 아니면 그 일을 맡을 자신이 아예 없었던 것 같았습니다.

사울도 실패를 하고 나서 “스스로 작게 여겼습니다”(사무엘상 15:17). 키가 크다고 기록된 그에게는 어울리지 않는 말입니다. 그는 정말 다른 사람들보다 키가 어깨 위만큼 더 컸지만(9:2), 자신을 그렇게 보지 않았습니다. 사실 오늘 본문은 그가 사람들의 인정을 받으려고 애쓰는 모습을 보여줍니다. 그는 사람들이 아니라 하나님께서 그를 선택하고 임무를 부여하셨다는 사실을 정말로 심각하게 받아들이지 않았던 것입니다.

그런데 사울의 실수는 사람이라면 누구나 할 수 있는 실수의 표본입니다. 우리는 하나님을 대신해 다스리라고 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받았음을 잊어버리고, 우리의 지위를 잘못 사용하여 그 결과 이 세상에 파멸을 가져올 수 있습니다. 이를 되돌리려면 우리가 하나님께로 돌아가야 합니다. 그래서 하나님이 그분의 사랑으로 우리를 다시 정립하시고, 성령으로 우리를 충만케 하시고, 예수님이 우리를 세상으로 보내시도록 해야 합니다.

UNDERESTIMATING OURSELVES

The young man became his team’s captain. The professional sports squad was now led by a mild-mannered kid who barely needed to shave. His first press conference was underwhelming. He kept deferring to the coach and to his teammates, and mumbled clichés about just trying to do his job. The team performed poorly that season, and by the end of it the young captain had been traded. He didn’t grasp that he’d been entrusted with the authority to lead, or maybe he never believed he could.

Due to his failures, Saul was “small in [his] own eyes” (1 SAMUEL 15:17)— which is a funny thing to say about a guy who’s described as being tall. He was literally head and shoulders above the rest (9:2). And yet that wasn’t how he saw himself. In fact, his actions in the chapter show him trying to win the approval of the people. He hadn’t fully grasped that God—not people—had chosen him and given him a mission.

But Saul’s mistake is a picture of every human being’s failure: we can miss that we were made in God’s image to reflect His rule, and end up misusing our authority—spreading destruction in the world. To undo this, we need to return to God: to let the Father define us by His love, to let Him fill us with the Spirit, and to let Jesus send us out into the world. GLENN PACKIAM

영원을 바라보는 눈

‘영원을 바라보는 눈’. 내 친구 매들린은 그녀의 자녀와 손주들이 이것을 갖기를 바라며 기도합니다. 그녀의 가족은 딸의 죽음으로 매우 힘든 시기를 보냈습니다. 가족들이 이 너무나 큰 상실로 많이 슬퍼하자 매들린은 가족들이 이 세상의 고통에 사로잡혀 점점 더 근시안적으로 살지 말고 조금씩 더 멀리 바라보며 사랑의 하나님에 대한 소망으로 가득하게 되기를 간절히 바라고 있습니다.

바울 사도와 그의 동역자들은 박해하는 사람들의 손에, 심지어 그들을 깎아내리려는 신자들로부터 엄청난 고난을 겪었지만 그들의 눈은 영원을 주목해서 바라보았습니다. 바울은 담대히 이렇게 선포합니다. “우리가 주목 하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이라”(고린도후서 4:18).

그들은 하나님의 일을 하고 있었지만 현실은 “사방으로 우겨싸이고” “답답한 일을 당하고” “박해를 받고” “거꾸러뜨림을 당하는” 일이었습니다 (8-9절). 하나님께서 이런 고난들에서 그들을 건져주셨어야 하지 않을까요? 그러나 바울은 낙심하지 않고 잠시 받는 환난 너머에 있는 “영원한 영광”에 소망을 두었습니다(17절). 그는 하나님의 능력이 자신에게 역사함을 알았고, “주 예수를 다시 살리신 이가 예수와 함께 우리도 다시 살리실” 줄을 굳게 확신하였습니다(14절).

우리 주위의 세상이 흔들린다고 느낄 때, 절대로 무너지지 않을 영원한 반석이신 하나님께로 우리의 시선을 돌릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

ETERNAL EYES

Eternal eyes, that’s what my friend Madeline prays her children and grandchildren would have. Her family has gone through a tumultuous season that ended with the death of her daughter. As the family grieves from this horrific loss, Madeline longs for them to be less and less nearsighted—consumed by the pain of this world. And to be more and more farsighted—filled with hope in our loving God.

The apostle Paul and his co-workers experienced great suffering at the hands of persecutors and even from believers who tried to discredit them. Yet, they had their eyes fixed on eternity. Paul boldly acknowledged that “we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:18).

Although they were doing God’s work, they lived with the reality of being “hard pressed on every side,” “perplexed,” “persecuted,” and “struck down” (VV. 8–9). Shouldn’t God have delivered them from these troubles? But instead of being disappointed, Paul built his hope on the “eternal glory” that supersedes momentary troubles (V. 17). He knew God’s power was at work in him and had complete assurance that “the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus” (V. 14).
