2D 좌석의 남자

켈시는 11개월 된 딸 루시와 루시의 산소 호흡기를 들고 좁은 비행기 통로를 지나며 자리를 찾고 있었습니다. 모녀는 딸의 만성 폐질환을 치료하기 위해 가는 중이었습니다. 그들의 지정된 좌석에 앉은 지 얼마 되지 않아 한 승무원이 켈시에게 다가와 어떤 일등석 승객이 그녀와 좌석을 바꾸고 싶어 한다고 말했습니다. 켈시는 감사의 눈물을 흘리며 들어왔던 복도를 따라 훨씬 넓은 좌석으로 가고, 은혜를 베푼 그 모르는 사람은 켈시의 자리를 찾아 갔습니다.

켈시의 은인은 바울이 디모데에게 보낸 편지에서 권한 그런 관대함을 보여준 사람입니다. 바울은 디모데가 돌보는 사람들을 “선을 행하고 선한 사업을 많이 하고 나누어 주기를 좋아하며 너그러운 자가 되도록”(디모데전서 6:18) 가르치라고 그에게 말했습니다. 바울은 우리가 오만해지고 세상의 부유함에 소망을 두기 쉽다고 말하면서, 그 대신 다른 사람들에게 베풀고 섬기며 사는 일에 초점을 맞추어 켈시가 탄 비행기 일등석 2D 좌석의 남자처럼 선한 일에 “부유케” 되라고 제안합니다.

우리가 부유하든지 곤핍하든지 가진 것을 기꺼이 다른 사람들과 나눔으로써 누구나 베푸는 삶의 풍요를 누릴 수 있습니다. 바울은 우리가 그렇게 할 때 “참된 생명을 취하게 될”(19절) 것이라고 말합니다.

THE MAN IN SEAT 2D

Kelsey navigated the narrow airplane aisle with her eleven-monthold daughter, Lucy, and Lucy’s oxygen machine. They were traveling to seek treatment for her baby’s chronic lung disease. Shortly after settling into their shared seat, a flight attendant approached Kelsey, saying a passenger in first class wanted to switch seats with her. With tears of gratitude streaming down her face, Kelsey made her way back up the aisle to the more spacious seat, while the benevolent stranger made his way toward hers.

Kelsey’s benefactor embodied the kind of generosity Paul encourages in his letter to Timothy. Paul told Timothy to instruct those in his care with the command to “do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share” (1 TIMOTHY 6:18). It’s tempting, Paul says, to become arrogant and put our hope in the riches of this world. Instead, he suggests that we focus on living a life of generosity and service to others, becoming “rich” in good deeds, like the man from seat 2D on Kelsey’s flight.

Whether we find ourselves with plenty or in want, we all can experience the richness of living generously by being willing to share what we have with others. When we do, Paul says we will “take hold of the life that is truly life” (V. 19). - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

하나님, 거기 계세요?

렐라가 암으로 죽어가고 있을 때 남편 티머시는 사랑의 하나님이 왜 아내를 고통받게 하는지 이해할 수 없었습니다. 그녀는 성경 교사로, 또 여러 사람의 멘토로 충실히 하나님을 섬겼습니다. 그는 “왜 이런 일이 일어나게 하셨습니까?”라고 외쳤습니다. 그러면서도 그는 변함없이 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 살았습니다.

나는 그에게 솔직하게 물어보았습니다. “그런데 왜 아직도 하나님을 믿습니까? 무엇 때문에 하나님을 떠나지 않는 건가요?”

티머시는 “전에 있었던 일 때문이지요.”라고 대답했습니다. 그는 지금은 하나님이 “보이지” 않아도 하나님이 그를 도와주시고 보호해 주셨던 날들을 돌아보았습니다. 이런 일들은 하나님께서 여전히 거기 계셔서 그의 가족을 돌보고 계신다는 표시였습니다. “내가 믿는 하나님이 그분의 방식대로 일을 이루실 것을 나는 알고 있습니다.”라고 그는 말했습니다.

IS GOD THERE?

Lela was dying of cancer, and her husband, Timothy, couldn’t understand why a loving God would let his wife suffer. She had served Him faithfully as a Bible teacher and mentor to many. “Why did You let this happen?” he cried. Yet Timothy continued to be faithful in his walk with God.

“So why do you still believe in God?” I asked him frankly. “What keeps you from turning away from Him?”

“Because of what has happened before,” Timothy replied. While he couldn’t “see” God now, he recalled the times when God had helped and protected him. These were signs that God was still there caring for his family. “I know the God I believe in will come through in His own way,” he said.

Timothy’s words echo Isaiah’s expression of trust in Isaiah 8:17. Even when he couldn’t feel God’s presence as his people braced for trouble from their enemies, he would “wait for the Lord.” He trusted in God because of the signs He’d given of His continuing presence (V. 18).

There are times when we might feel as if God isn’t with us in our troubles. That’s when we depend on what we can see of His works in our lives, in the past and present. They’re the visible reminder of an invisible God—a God who is always with us and will answer in His own time and way. - LESLIE KOH

충만함에 이르는 삶

17세기 철학자 토마스 홉스는 자연 그대로의 인간의 삶은 “고독 하고, 가난하고, 고약하고, 잔인하며, 짧다.”라는 유명한 말을 남겼습니다. 홉스는 인간의 본능은 다른 사람들보다 우위를 점하기 위해 전쟁을 하려 하기 때문에 법과 질서를 유지하기 위해 정부의 설립이 필요하다고 주장했습니다.

인류에 대한 그런 어두운 생각은 예수님이 “나보다 먼저 온 자는 다 절도요 강도”(요한복음 10:8)라고 하셨던 당시의 상황과 비슷하게 들립니다. 그러나 예수님은 절망 가운데서도 희망을 주십니다. “도둑이 오는 것은 도둑질하고 죽이고 멸망시키려는 것뿐이요” 라고 하시고는 곧 “내가 온 것은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻게 하려는 것이라”(10절)고 기쁜 소식을 전해주셨습니다.

시편 23편은 우리 목자이신 주님께서 우리에게 주시는 삶을 새롭게 그려 보여주고 있습니다. 그 목자 안에서 우리는 “부족함이 없고”(1절) 새 힘을 얻습니다(3절). 주님이 우리를 그분의 완전한 뜻에 따라 바른 길로 인도하시기 때문에 우리는 어두운 시간을 마주하더라도 두려워하지 않아도 됩니다. 왜냐하면 하나님이 우리를 위로하기 위해 그곳에 계시기 때문입니다(3-4절). 하나님은 역경 앞에서 우리를 승리하게 하시고 축복으로 우리를 덮어주십니다 (5절). 주님의 선하심과 사랑이 매일 우리와 함께하며, 우리는 영원히 하나님의 임재를 누리는 특권을 갖습니다(6절).

목자이신 주님의 부름에 응답함으로 우리에게 오셔서 주신 완전하고 충만한 삶을 경험할 수 있기를 소원합니다.

LIFE TO THE FULL

Seventeenth-century philosopher Thomas Hobbes famously wrote that human life in its natural state is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” Hobbes argued that our instincts tend toward war in a bid to attain dominance over others; thus the establishment of government would be necessary to maintain law and order.

The bleak view of humanity sounds like the state of affairs that Jesus described when He said, “All who have come before me are thieves and robbers” (JOHN 10:8). But Jesus offers hope in the midst of despair. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy,” but then the good news: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (V. 10).

Psalm 23 paints a refreshing portrait of the life our Shepherd gives us. In Him, we “lack nothing” (V. 1) and are refreshed (V. 3). He leads us down the right paths of His perfect will, so that even when we face dark times, we need not be afraid; for He is present to comfort us (VV. 3–4). He causes us to triumph in the face of adversity and overwhelms us with blessings (V. 5). His goodness and love follow us every day, and we have the privilege of His presence forever (V. 6).

May we answer the Shepherd’s call and experience the full, abundant life He came to give us. REMI OYEDELE

똑바로 가기

예전에는 농부가 트랙터나 콤바인을 똑바로 운전하기 위해서는 앞을 잘 보고 핸들을 꽉 잡아야 했습니다. 그러나 아무리 눈이 좋아도 줄을 겹치게 되고, 날이 저물면 아무리 손에 힘이 세도 힘이 빠지곤 했습니다. 그러나 이제는 GPS(위성항법장치) 기술을 사용한 자동 조향장치가 있어 1인치(2.5센티미터) 이내의 정확도로 심고 키우고 뿌립니다. 이것은 매우 효율적이며 손도 사용하지 않습니다. 거대한 콤바인에 앉아 손에 운전대 대신 로스트 비프 샌드위치를 들고 있는 모습을 상상해 보십시오. 계속 똑바로 가게 해주는 정말 놀라운 장치입니다.

STRAIGHT AHEAD

It used to take the steady eye and the firm hand of a farmer to drive a tractor or combine down straight rows. But even the best eyes would overlap rows, and by end of day even the strongest hands would be fatigued. But now there’s autosteer—a GPS-based technology that allows for accuracy to within one inch when planting, cultivating, and spraying. It’s incredibly efficient and hands-free. Just imagine sitting in a mammoth combine and instead of gripping the wheel, you’re gripping a roast beef sandwich. An amazing tool to keep you moving straight ahead.

You may recall the name Josiah. He was crowned king when he was only “eight years old” (2 KINGS 22:1). Years later, in his mid-twenties, Hilkiah the high priest found “the Book of the Law” in the temple (V. 8). It was then read to the young king, who tore his robes in sorrow due to his ancestors’ disobedience to God. Josiah set about to do what was “right in the eyes of the Lord” (V. 2). The book became a tool to steer the people so there would be no turning to the right or left. God’s instructions were there to set things straight.

Allowing the Scriptures to guide us day by day keeps our lives in line with knowing God and His will. The Bible is an amazing tool that, if followed, keeps us moving straight ahead. - JOHN BLASE

주님 앞에서 춤추는 것

오래 전 나는 아내 캐럴린과 함께 작은 교회를 방문했는데 예배 중에 한 여성이 통로에서 춤을 추기 시작했습니다. 그러자 곧 다른 사람들도 그녀를 따라 춤추기 시작했습니다. 아내와 나는 서로 쳐다보며 “나는 안 해!”라고 무언의 동의를 하였습니다. 우리는 엄숙한 예배를 선호하는 교회 전통에 익숙해 있어서 이런 다른 형태의 예배가 불편하게 느껴졌습니다.

마가복음에서 마리아의 “낭비”를 보여주는 이야기에 어떤 의미가 있다면 그것은 예수님을 향한 우리의 사랑을 표현하는 모습을 보고 다른 사람들이 불편을 느낄 수도 있다는 점입니다(마가복음 14:1-9). 1년 치 임금에 해당하는 금액을 기름 붓는데 사용한 마리아의 행동은 예수님의 제자들의 경멸을 받을 정도로 “어리석은” 것이었습니다. 제자들의 반응을 말해주려고 마가가 사용한 단어는 “코웃음치다”라는 단어인데 이는 경멸하고 조롱했다는 뜻입니다. 마리아는 예수님의 반응을 두려워하여 몸을 움츠렸을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 예수님은 마리아의 헌신적인 행동에 대해 그녀를 칭찬하고 그의 제자들로부터 그녀를 변호해 주셨습니다. 어떤 사람들은 마리아의 행위를 비현실적이라고 생각할지 모르지만 예수님은 그녀가 그런 행동을 하게끔 한 사랑을 보셨습니다. 예수님은 “너희가 어찌하여 그를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

격식이 있든 없든, 조용하든 열광적이든, 각기 다른 형식으로 드리는 예배들은 모두 예수님을 향한 진실하고 넘치는 사랑을 표현하는 것입니다. 예수님은 사랑의 마음으로 드려지는 모든 예배를 받으시기에 합당한 분이십니다.

DANCING BEFORE THE LORD

A number of years ago, my wife and I visited a small church where during the worship service a woman began to dance in the aisle. She was soon joined by others. Carolyn and I looked at each other and an unspoken agreement passed between us: “Not me!” We come from church traditions that favor a serious liturgy, and this other form of worship was well beyond our comfort zone.

But if Mark’s story of Mary’s “waste” means anything at all, it suggests that our love for Jesus may express itself in ways that others find uncomfortable (MARK 14:1–9). A year’s wages were involved in Mary’s anointing. It was an “unwise” act that invited the disciples’ scorn. The word Mark uses to describe their reaction means “to snort” and suggests disdain and mockery. Mary may have cringed, fearing Jesus’ response. But He commended her for her act of devotion and defended her against His own disciples, for Jesus saw the love that prompted her action despite what some would consider the impractical nature of it. He said, “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me” (V. 6).

Different forms of worship—informal, formal, quiet, exuberant— represent a sincere outpouring of love for Jesus. He’s worthy of all worship that comes from a heart of love. - DAVID H. ROPER

만약을 대비한 우상들

샘은 하루에 두 번씩 퇴직연금 구좌를 확인합니다. 그는 30년 동안 저축했으며 주가가 오르면서 마침내 은퇴하기에 충분한 돈을 모으게 되었습니다. 주가가 폭락하지 않는다면 말입니다. 바로 이것이 두려워 샘은 그의 잔고를 계속 살펴보고 있습니다.

예레미야는 이에 대해 경고했습니다. “유다야 네 신들이 네 성읍의 수와 같도다 너희가 예루살렘 거리의 수대로 그 수치스러운 물건의 제단 곧 바알에게 분향하는 제단을 쌓았도다”(11:13).

우리도 유대인들처럼 우상숭배에 빠질 수 있다는 것을 아십니까? 재능이 있고 좋은 교육을 받고 돈이 있는 것은 좋습니다. 하지만 조심하지 않으면 그런 것에 의지하게 될 수도 있습니다. 우리는 죽을 때 하나님이 필요하다는 것을 압니다. 그리고 지금 우리를 축복해 달라고 하나님께 간구합니다. 하지만 그러면서도 우리는 동시에 만약을 대비하여 이런 더 작은 신들에게도 의지합니다.

당신은 무엇을 신뢰합니까? 만약을 대비한 우상이라 해도 우상은 우상 입니다. 하나님께서 주신 많은 은사들에 감사하십시오. 그러나 그 중 어느
것에도 의지하지 않는다고 하나님께 아뢰십시오. 믿음은 하나님만 온전히 의지하는 것입니다.

JUST-IN-CASE IDOLS

Sam checks his retirement account twice each day. He saved for thirty years, and with the boost of a rising stock market, finally has enough to retire. As long as stocks don’t plunge. This fear keeps Sam worrying about his balance.

Jeremiah warned about this: “You, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns; and the altars you have set up to burn incense to that shameful god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem” (11:13).

Judah’s idolatry is remarkable. They knew the Lord was God. How could they worship anyone else? They were hedging their bets. They needed the Lord for the afterlife, because only the true God could raise them from the dead. But what about now? Pagan gods promised health, wealth, and fertility, so why not pray to them too, just in case?

Can you see how Judah’s idolatry is also our temptation? It’s good to have talent, education, and money. But if we’re not careful, we might shift our confidence to them. We know we’ll need God when we die, and we’ll ask Him to bless us now. But we’ll also lean on these lesser gods, just in case.

Where is your trust? Back-up idols are still idols. Thank God for His many gifts, and tell Him you’re not relying on any of them. Your faith is riding entirely on Him. - MIKE WITTMER

재건하기

곧 시작될 공사 현장을 둘러보기 위해 지도자는 한밤중에 말을 타고 나섰습니다. 주변의 온통 파괴된 것들을 돌아보던 그는 부서진 성벽과 불에 탄 성문들을 보았습니다. 어떤 곳에는 널려있는 잔해 때문에 말을 타고 지나가기도 힘들었습니다. 그는 슬픈 마음으로 말을 돌려 집으로 향했습니다.

그는 성읍의 관리들에게 피해 규모를 보고하면서 “우리가 어떤 어려움에 처해 있는지는 여러분도 잘 아는 사실입니다”(느헤미야 2:17, 현대인의 성경)라고 하면서, 성읍은 폐허가 되었고 성읍을 지켜주던 성벽은 쓸모없게 되었다고 했습니다.

그러나 그는 비탄에 빠진 주민들에게 “하나님의 선한 손이 자기를 도우신 일”을 말하며 희망을 불어넣었고, 백성들은 그 자리에서 “재건 공사를 시작합시다”(18절, 현대인의 성경)라고 화답했습니다.

그리고 그들은 ‘공사를 시작했습니다.’

공사는 너무나 크고 적들의 방해도 있었지만 예루살렘 사람들은 느헤미아의 지도 아래 하나님을 믿으며 총력을 기울여 단 52일 만에 성벽을 다시 세웠습니다(6:15).

HOW TO REBUILD

It was nighttime when the leader set out by horseback to inspect the work that lay ahead. As he toured the destruction all around him, he saw city walls that had been destroyed and gates that had been burned. In some areas, the vast debris made it tough for his horse to get through. Saddened, the rider turned toward home.

When it came time to report the damage to the officials of the city, he began by saying, “You see the trouble we are in” (NEHEMIAH 2:17). He reported that the city was in ruins, and the protecting city wall had been rendered useless.

But then he made a statement that energized the troubled citizens: “I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me.” Immediately, the people replied, “Let us start rebuilding” (V. 18).

And they did.

With faith in God and all-out effort, despite enemy opposition and a seemingly impossible task, the people of Jerusalem—under Nehemiah’s leadership—rebuilt the wall in just fifty-two days (6:15).

As you consider your circumstances, is there something that looks difficult but that you know God wants you to do? A sin you can’t seem to get rid of? A relationship rift that’s not God-honoring? A task for Him that looks too hard?

Ask God for guidance (2:4–5), analyze the problem (VV. 11–15), and recognize His involvement (V. 18). Then start rebuilding. - DAVE BRANON

서로를 위해 지음 받은 사람들

스텔라가 말합니다. “제가 남편을 돌봐요. 그가 행복하면 저도 행복해요.” 남편 멀이 대답합니다. “아내가 곁에 있으면 저도 행복하답니다.” 멀과 스텔라는 결혼하여 79년을 함께 살았습니다. 최근에 멀이 요양원에 들어갔으나 그곳 생활을 힘들어했습니다. 그래서 스텔라는 주저없이 그를 집으로 데려왔습니다. 이제 멀은 101세이고 스텔라는 95세입니다. 아내는 걸어 다니는데 보행보조기를 써야 하지만 남편이 좋아하는 음식을 만드는 등 그를 위해 할 수 있는 일들을 사랑으로 감당합니다. 그러나 혼자서는 다 해낼 수가 없습니다. 그래서 스텔라가 할 수 없는 것은 손주들과 이웃이 도와줍니다.

스텔라와 멀이 함께하는 삶은 창세기 2장에서 하나님이 “사람이 혼자 사는 것이 좋지 아니하니 내가 그를 위하여 돕는 배필을 지으리라”(18절)고 하신 말씀의 좋은 본보기입니다. 하나님이 아담에게 데려온 다른 어떤 피조물도 그 말씀에 맞지 않았습니다. 아담에게는 그의 갈비뼈로 만든 하와만이 꼭 맞는 배필이자 동반자였습니다(19-24절).

하와는 아담의 완벽한 동반자였으며 하나님은 그들을 통해 결혼제도를 만드셨습니다. 이는 두 사람이 만나 서로를 도울 뿐 아니라 가정을 꾸리고 다른 사람들을 포함한 모든 피조물을 돌보게 하기 위한 것이었습니다(1:28). 그 첫 번째 가정으로부터 공동체가 생겼고, 결혼 여부나 나이와 관계없이 우리는 아무도 혼자가 되지 않게 되었습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 공동체로서 “짐을 서로 지는”(갈라디아서 6:2) 특권을 주셨습니다.

MADE FOR EACH OTHER

“I take care of him. When he’s happy, I’m happy,” says Stella. Merle replies, “I’m happy when she’s around.” Merle and Stella have been married for 79 years. When Merle was recently admitted to a nursing home, he was miserable—so Stella gladly brought him home. He’s 101, and she’s 95. Though she needs a walker to get around, she lovingly does what she can for her husband, such as preparing the food he likes. But she couldn’t do it on her own. Grandchildren and neighbors help with the things Stella can’t manage.

Stella and Merle’s life together is an example of Genesis 2, where God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (V. 18). None of the creatures God brought before Adam fit that description. Only in Eve, made from the rib of Adam, did Adam find a suitable helper and companion (VV. 19–24).

Eve was the perfect companion for Adam, and through them God instituted marriage. This wasn’t only for the mutual aid of individuals but also to begin a family and to care for creation, which includes other people (1:28). From that first family came a community so that, whether married or single, old or young, none of us would be alone. As a community, God has given us the privilege of sharing “each other’s burdens” (GALATIANS 6:2). - ALYSON KIEDA

그분이 나를 변화시켰다

런던에서 가장 큰 매춘업소를 운영했던 존은 교도소에 들어갈 때만해도 자신이 착한 사람이라고 착각하고 있었습니다. 거기서 그는 커피와 케이크를 얻어먹으려고 교도소의 성경공부 모임에 참석하다가 다른 수감자들의 너무나 행복해하는 모습들을 보고는 충격을 받았습니다. 첫 찬양을 부르다 울음이 터진 그는 나중에 성경책을 받았습니다. 에스겔서를 읽는 중에 “마치 벼락이 치듯” 무언가가 그를 내리쳤고 그는 변화되었습니다. “만일 악인이 [그들의] 악을 떠나 정의와 공의를 행하면......반드시 살고 죽지 아니하리라”(18:27-28). 하나님의 말씀이 그에게서 살아 움직이자 이런 깨달음이 왔습니다. “나는 착한 사람이 아니었다...... 나는 악한 인간이었고 변해야 할 사람이었다.” 그는 목사님과 기도하다가 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 예수 그리스도를 찾았고 그분이 나를 변화시켜주셨습니다.”

에스겔서에 나오는 이 말씀은 하나님의 백성들이 유배지에 있을 때 주신 말씀이었습니다. 그들이 하나님에게서 돌아섰을 때에도 하나님은 그들이 죄악을 버리고 “마음과 영을 새롭게”(31절) 하기를 간절히 원하셨습니다. 그 말씀은 존이 죄인들을 불러 회개하게 하려고 오신 예수님 (누가복음 5:32)을 따르며 “돌이키고 살도록”(32절) 만들어 주었습니다.

우리도 성령님이 죄를 깨닫게 하실 때 응답하여 용서와 자유를 누릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

HE CHANGED ME

When John, who ran the biggest brothel in London, was sent to prison, he falsely believed, I’m a good guy. While there, he decided to attend the Bible study at the prison because there was cake and coffee, but he was struck by how happy the other inmates seemed to be. He started to cry during the first song and later received a Bible. Reading from the prophet Ezekiel changed him, hitting him “like a thunderbolt.” He read, “But if a wicked person turns away from [their] wickedness . . . and does what is just and right, . . . that person will surely live; they will not die” (18:27–28). God’s Word came alive to him and he realized, “I wasn’t a good guy . . . I was wicked and I needed to change.” While praying with the pastor, he said, “I found Jesus Christ and He changed me.”

These words from Ezekiel were spoken to God’s people when they were in exile. Although they had turned from God, He longed that they would rid themselves of their offenses and “get a new heart and a new spirit” (V. 31). Those words helped John to “Repent and live!” (V. 32) as he followed Jesus, the One who called sinners to repentance (LUKE 5:32).

May we respond to the Spirit’s conviction of sin, that we too might enjoy forgiveness and freedom. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

함께하면 이긴다

사무엘 바가가 목사는 한밤중에 한 교인으로부터 집으로 와 달라는 전화를 받았습니다. 도착해보니 온 집이 불길에 휩싸여 있었습니다. 아버지는 화상을 입었음에도 불구하고 아이를 구하려고 집으로 다시 들어가 의식이 없는 딸을 구해서 나왔습니다. 우간다의 시골 지역인 그 곳에서 병원은 6마일(10킬로미터)이나 떨어져 있었고, 교통수단이 없어 목사와 그 아버지는 아이를 안고 병원으로 달리기 시작했습니다. 아픈 아이를 한 사람이 안고 가다가 지치면 서로 교대했습니다. 그들은 마침내 함께 병원에 이르렀고 아버지와 딸은 치료를 받고 완전히 회복되었습니다.

출애굽기 17:8-13에서 하나님은 전쟁터에서 군사들을 이끈 여호수아와 하나님의 지팡이를 잡고 손을 들어 올리고 있었던 모세의 노력을 합하여 큰 승리를 이루어주셨습니다. 아론과 홀은 모세의 손이 지쳐 가면 그를 도와 해가 질 때까지 손을 한 쪽씩 붙들어 올려 적을 물리칠 수 있었습니다.

서로 의지하는 것은 참으로 중요합니다. 사랑의 하나님은 은혜 가운데 사람들을 그분의 대리인으로 우리에게 보내어 서로에게 유익하게 하십니다. 잘 들어주는 귀와 도움의 손길들, 지혜롭고 위로가 되며 충고가 되는 말들, 그리고 다른 많은 것들이 우리에게 주어지고, 이것은 다시 우리를 통해 다른 사람들에게 전해집니다. 함께하면 승리를 얻고 또 하나님께 영광이 됩니다!

TOGETHER WE WIN

In the middle of the night, Pastor Samuel Baggaga received a call asking him to come to the home of a church member. When he arrived, he found a house engulfed by fire. The father, though burned himself, had reentered the home to rescue one of his children and emerged with an unconscious daughter. The hospital, in this rural Ugandan setting, was six miles (10 kilometers) away. With no transportation available, the pastor and the father started running to the hospital with the child. When one of them tired from carrying the injured girl, the other one took over. Together they made the journey; the father and his daughter were treated and then fully recovered.

In Exodus 17:8–13 the Lord orchestrated a great victory that included the efforts of Joshua, who led fighting men on the battlefield; and Moses, who kept his hands raised while holding the staff of God. When Moses’ hands grew weary, Aaron and Hur assisted by each holding up one of his hands until the setting of the sun and the defeat of the enemy.

The value of interdependence can never be underestimated. God, in His kindness, graciously provides people as His agents for mutual good. Listening ears and helpful hands; wise, comforting, and correcting words—these and other resources come to us and through us to others. Together we win and God gets the glory! - ARTHUR JACKSON
