열려 있는 두 팔

OPEN ARMS

Saydee and his family have an “open arms and open home” philosophy. People are always welcome in their home, “especially those who are in distress,” he says. That’s the kind of household he had growing up in Liberia with his nine siblings. Their parents always welcomed others into their family. He says, “We grew up as a community. We loved one another. Everybody was responsible for everybody. My dad taught us to love each other, care for each other, protect each other.” When King David was in need, he found this type of loving care in God. Second Samuel 22 (and Psalm 18) records his song of praise to God for the ways He had been a refuge for him throughout his life. He recalled, “In my distress I called to the Lord; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears” (2 SAMUEL 22:7). God had delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul, many
times. He praised God for being his fortress and deliverer in whom he took refuge (VV. 2–3). While our distresses may be small in comparison to David’s, God welcomes us to run to Him to find the shelter we long for. His arms are always open. Therefore we “sing the praises of [His] name” (V. 50). ANNE CETAS

친구와 함께 자동차로 케냐의 나이로비에 있는 어떤 빈민가로 갔을 때, 그곳의 빈곤을 목격하면서 우리의 마음은 아주 무거웠습니다. 하지만 어린아이들이 “므충가지, 므충가지!”(스와힐리어로 “목사님”) 소리치면서 뛰어오는 것을 보면서 우리 마음에는 동시에 신선한 물같은 색다른 감정들이 솟아났습니다. 아이들은 우리와 함께 차에 타고 있던 그들의 영적 지도자를 보고 기쁨이 가득 찬 반응을 보인 것입니다. 그렇게 정겹게 외치면서 그 어린아이들은 자기들을 관심 있게 돌보는 사람을 환영해 주었습니다. 예수님이 나귀를 타고 예루살렘에 오셨을 때, 그분을 축하하는 사람들 중에 즐거워하는 아이들도 있었습니다. “찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여...... 호산나 다윗의 자손이여”(마태복음 21:9, 15). 그러나 예수님을 찬양하는

LEARNING FROM LITTLE ONES

When a friend and I rode into one of the slums in Nairobi, Kenya, our hearts were deeply humbled by the poverty we witnessed. In that same setting, however, different emotions—like fresh waters—were stirred in us as we witnessed young children running and shouting, “Mchungaji, Mchungaji!” (Swahili for “pastor”). Such was their joy-filled response upon seeing their spiritual leader in the vehicle with us. With these tender shouts, the little ones welcomed the one known for his care and concern for them. As Jesus arrived in Jerusalem riding on a donkey, joyful children were among those who celebrated Him. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! . . . Hosanna to the Son of David” (MATTHEW 21:9, 15). But
praises for Jesus were not the only sounds in the air. One can imagine the noisiness of scurrying, money-making merchants who were put to flight by Jesus (VV. 12–13). Furthermore, religious leaders who had witnessed His kindness in action “were indignant” (VV. 14–15). They voiced their displeasure with the children’s praises (V. 16) and thereby exposed
the poverty of their own hearts. We can learn from the faith of children of God of all ages and places who recognize Jesus as the Savior of the world. He’s the One who hears
our praises and cries, and He cares for and rescues us when we come to Him with childlike trust. ARTHUR JACKSON

FOREVER LOVE

Years ago, my four-year-old son gave me a framed wooden heart mounted on a metal plate with the word forever painted in its center. “I love you forever, Mommy,” he said.
I thanked him with a hug. “I love you more.” That priceless gift still assures me of my son’s never-ending love. On tough days, God uses that sweet present to comfort and encourage me as He affirms I’m deeply loved. The frame also reminds me of the gift of God’s everlasting love, as expressed throughout His Word and confirmed by His Spirit. We can
trust God’s unchanging goodness and sing grateful praises that confirm His enduring love, as the psalmist does (PSALM 136:1). We can exalt the Lord as greater than and above all (VV. 2–3), as we reflect on His endless wonders and unlimited understanding (VV. 4–5). The God who loves us forever is the conscious and caring Maker of the heavens and earth, who maintains control of time itself (VV. 6–9). We can rejoice because the everlasting love the psalmist sang about is the same continuing love our all-powerful Creator and Sustainer pours into the lives of His children today. No matter what we’re facing, the One who made us and remains with us strengthens us by asserting He loves us unconditionally and completely. Thank You, God, for the countless reminders of Your endless and life-transforming love! XOCHITL DIXON

밍텍은 심한 두통을 느끼며 잠에서 깼지만 그것이 늘 있던 편두통 이라고만 생각했습니다. 그러나 침대에서 일어났을 때 그만 바닥으로 쓰러지고 말았습니다. 그는 뇌졸중 진단을 받고 병원에 입원하게 되었습니다. 넉달 동안의 재활훈련 끝에 언어와 사고 기능은 회복되었지만, 아직도 걸을 때마다 고통스럽게 다리를 접니다. 그는 종종 절망에 빠지기도 하지만 욥기서에서 큰 위안을 얻고 있습니다. 욥은 하루아침에 그의 모든 재산과 자녀들을 잃어버렸습니다. 이런 끔찍한 소식에도 그는 먼저 소망을 가지고 하나님을 바라보며, 모든 것의 근원이신

DOUBT AND FAITH

MingTeck woke up with a severe headache and thought it was another migraine. But when he got out of bed, he collapsed onto the floor. He was admitted to the hospital where the doctors informed him he’d had a stroke. After four months of rehabilitation, he recovered his ability to think and talk but still walks with a painful limp. He often struggles with despair, but he finds great comfort from the book of Job. Job lost all his wealth and his children overnight. Despite the harrowing news, he at first looked to God in hope and praised Him for being the source of everything. He acknowledged God’s sovereign hand even in times of calamity (JOB 1:21). We marvel at his strong faith, but Job also struggled with despair. After he lost his health too (2:7), he cursed the day he was born (3:1). He was honest with his friends and God about his pain. Eventually, however, he came to accept that both good and bad come from God’s hand (13:15; 19:25–27). In our sufferings, we too may find ourselves vacillating between despair and hope, doubt and faith. God doesn’t require us to be dauntless in the face of adversity but instead invites us to come to Him with our questions. Though our faith may fail at times, we can trust God to always be faithful. 말 못했던 사람

미국 고등학교 학생들이 벨리즈의 한 노인주거지에서 예수님을 찬양하는 노래를 할 때 휠체어에 앉아 있던 한 남자가 즐겁게 듣고 있었습니다. 잠시 후, 몇몇 학생이 그와 대화를 시도하면서 그가 말하지 못한다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 뇌졸중으로 언어 능력을 잃어버렸던 것입니다. 그 남자와 대화가 안 되어 학생들은 그에게 찬양을 불러주기로 했습니다.
그런데 찬양을 시작하자 놀라운 일이 벌어졌습니다. 말하지 못했던 그 사람이 노래를 부르기 시작한 것입니다. 그는 새 친구들과 함께 열정적으로 “주 하나님 지으신 모든 세계”를 큰 소리로 불렀습니다. 그것은 모두에게 놀라운 순간이었습니다. 하나님을 향한 이 남자의 사랑에 온갖 장벽이 뚫리고, 심금을 울리는 기쁨에 찬 경배의 목소리가 쏟아져 나왔습니다.
때때로 우리 모두 경배를 막는 장벽을 만납니다. 그것이 관계에서 생기는 갈등이나 돈 문제일 수도 있고, 아니면 하나님과의 관계가 좀 차갑게 식어버린 마음일 수도 있습니다.
우리의 말 못하는 친구는 전능하신 하나님의 위대하심과 장엄하심이 그 어떤 장벽도 넘어설 수 있음을 깨닫게 해줍니다. “주 하나님 지으신 모든 세계 내 마음속에 그리어 볼 때.”
경배하는데 어려움을 겪고 있습니까? 시편 96편 같은 말씀을 읽으며 우리 하나님이 얼마나 위대하신지 묵상해 보십시오. 그러면 당신도 장애물과 거부감들이 찬양으로 바뀌는 것을 경험하게 될 것입니다.

THE MAN WHO COULDN’T TALK

Sitting in his wheelchair at a senior citizens home in Belize, a man joyfully listened as a group of American high school teenagers sang about Jesus. Later, as some of the teens tried to communicate with him, they discovered he couldn’t talk. A stroke had robbed him of his ability to speak. Since they couldn’t carry on a conversation with the man, the teens
decided to sing to him. As they began to sing, something amazing happened. The man who couldn’t talk began to sing. With enthusiasm, he belted out “How Great Thou Art” right along with his new friends. It was a remarkable moment for everyone. This man’s love for God broke through the barriers and poured out in audible worship—heartfelt, joyous worship.
We all have worship barriers from time to time. Maybe it’s a relationship conflict or a money problem. Or it could be a heart that’s grown a bit cold in its relationship to God. Our non-talking friend reminds us that the greatness and majesty of our almighty God can overcome any barrier. “O Lord, my God—when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made!” Struggling in your worship? Reflect on how great our God is by reading a passage such as Psalm 96, and you too may find your obstacles and objections replaced by praise. DAVE BRANON

최근 어느 토요일 오후, 나는 가족과 함께 점심을 먹기 위해 근처 식당에 갔습니다. 웨이터가 바삭한 감자튀김과 두툼한 햄버거를 테이블 위에 놓자, 남편이 그를 쳐다보며 이름을 묻더니 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 가족과 함께 음식을 먹기 전에 기도합니다. 오늘 당신을 위해 무슨 기도를 해 드릴까요?” 이제 이름을 알게 된 웨이터 알렌은 놀라움과 걱정이
뒤섞인 눈길로 우리를 바라보았습니다. 그리고 짧은 정적이 흐른 후, 그는 자기가 매일 밤 친구네 소파에서 잠을 자고, 좀 전에 차가 멈춰버렸으며, 돈이 떨어진 상태라고 말했습니다.
남편이 조용히 하나님께 알렌에게 필요한 것을 주시고 주님의 사랑을 보여달라고 기도할 때, 나는 우리의 중보기도가 성령께서 우리의 문제를 하나님께 전해주시는 것과 아주 흡사하다는 생각을 했습니다. 우리 스스로 삶을 꾸려나갈 수 없고 하나님께 무엇을 구해야 할지조차 모르는 가장 절실한 순간에, “성령이......성도를 위하여 간구하십니다”(로마서 8:27). 성령께서 무엇을 말씀하시는지는 알 수 없지만, 언제나 우리의 삶을 향한 하나님의 뜻에 부합 된다는 것은 확실합니다. 다음에 당신이 다른 누군가를 위해 하나님의 인도와 공급, 그리고
보호하심을 놓고 기도할 때, 그 친절한 행위를 통해 당신의 이름을 아시고 당신의 문제들에 관심을 갖고 계실 하나님께 당신의 영적인 갈급함 또한 올려지고 있다는 사실을 기억하십시오.

GO-BETWEEN PRAYER

Late one Saturday afternoon, my family and I stopped at a local restaurant for lunch. As the waiter set crispy fries and thick burgers on our table, my husband glanced up and asked his name. Then he said, “We pray as a family before we eat. Is there something we can pray for you today?” Allen, whose name we now knew, looked at us with a
mixture of surprise and anxiety. A short silence followed before he told us that he was sleeping on his friend’s couch each night, his car had just quit working, and he was broke.
As my husband quietly asked God to provide for Allen and show him His love, I thought about how our go-between prayer was similar to what happens when the Holy Spirit takes up our cause and connects us with God. In our moments of greatest need—when we realize we’re no match to handle life on our own, when we don’t know what to say to God, “The
Spirit intercedes for God’s people” (ROMANS 8:27). What the Spirit says is a mystery, but we’re assured that it always fits with God’s will for our lives. The next time you pray for God’s guidance, provision, and protection in someone else’s life, let that act of kindness remind you that your spiritual needs are also being lifted to God who knows your name and

나치가 거의 5만여 명의 여자들을 죽였던 라벤스브뤼크 집단수용소에서 해방군들은 다음과 같은 기도문이 구겨져 있는 것을 발견했습니다. ‘주님, 선의를 가진 사람들뿐 아니라 악의를 가진 사람들도 기억해 주소서. 하지만 그들이 저희에게 행한 고통을 기억하지 마시고, 그 고통에 저희가 감사하며 맺은 열매들을 기억하소서. 그 열매들은 우리가 서로 사랑하고, 신의를 지키고, 스스로를 낮추며, 용기를 잃지 않고, 이 고통을 통해 더 커진 우리의 마음입니다. 그들이 심판대 앞에 설 때, 우리가 맺은 이 모든 열매들을 보시고 그들을 용서해 주소서.’ 이 기도문을 쓴 여성이 생명의 위협을 느끼며 겪었을 공포와 고통을 나는 감히 상상할 수도 없습니다. 또한 어떤 불가사의한 은혜로 이런 기도문을 쓸 수 있었는지도 상상하기 어렵습니다. 이 여인은 압제자들을 위해 하나님께 용서를 구했습니다. 그 누구도 생각조차 할 수 없었던 일이었습니다. 이 기도문은 예수님의 기도를 상기시켜줍니다. 예수님은 억울하게 고소 당해 조롱받고 매를 맞고 사람들 앞에서 치욕을 당한 후, “두 행악자와 함께 십자가에 못박히셨습니다”(누가복음 23:33). 나라면, 거칠게 깎은 십자가에 매달린 채 상한 몸에 호흡이 곤란한 예수님이 가해자들에게 응징이나 신성한 정의를 구하면서 심판을 선언하실 거라고 기대했을 것입니다. 그런데, 예수님은 인간이라면 누구나 느낄 충동에 정반대되는 기도를 하셨습니다.
“아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다” (34절). 예수님이 베푸시는 용서는 불가능한 용서 같아 보이지만, 주님은 바로 우리에게 그 용서를 베풀어주십니다. 예수님의 신성한 은혜 안에 도저히 생각할 수 없는 용서가 흘러 넘치고 있습니다.

IMPOSSIBLE FORGIVENESS

Liberators found the following prayer crumpled among the remains of the Ravensbruck concentration camp where Nazis exterminated nearly 50,000 women: O Lord, remember not only the men and women of goodwill, but also those of ill will. But do not remember the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember the fruits we brought thanks to this suffering—our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart which has grown out of this. And when they come to judgment, let all the fruits that we have borne be their forgiveness. I can’t imagine the fear and pain inflicted on the terrorized woman who wrote this prayer. I can’t imagine what kind of inexplicable grace these words required of her. She did the unthinkable: she sought God’s forgiveness for her oppressors. This prayer echoes Christ’s prayer. After being wrongly accused, mocked, beaten, and humiliated before the people, Jesus was “crucified . . . along with [two] criminals” (LUKE 23:33). Hanging, with mutilated body and gasping for breath, from a rough-hewn cross, I would expect Jesus to pronounce judgment on His tormentors, to seek retribution or divine justice. However, Jesus uttered a prayer contradicting every human impulse:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (V. 34). The forgiveness Jesus offers seems impossible, but He offers it to us. In His divine grace, impossible forgiveness spills free. WINN COLLIER

인생 여정을 위한 힘

어느 해 여름, 나는 거의 불가능해 보이는 일에 맞닥뜨린 적이 있습니다. 장문의 글을 써야 했는데 마감 시간이 촉박했던 것입니다. 며칠 동안 글 쓰는 일에 전력을 다해 페이지를 채워나갔지만, 너무 지치고 또 끝내지 못할 것 같아 포기하고만 싶었습니다. 그때 한 지혜로운 친구가 “요즘 들어 기분이 상쾌했던 마지막 때가 언제였어? 잘 먹으면서 휴식을 취해 보면
어떨까?”라고 했습니다. 나는 그 말이 옳다는 것을 바로 알았습니다. 친구의 충고를 듣고 나는 죽이겠다는 이세벨의 위협을 사신을 통해 전해 들었던 엘리야를 떠올렸습니다
(열왕기상 19:2). 물론 나의 글 쓰는 일은 선지자가 겪었던 일에 비하면 아주 미미한 것에 지나지 않습니다. 엘리야는 갈멜산에서 거짓 선지자들을 물리친 후 이세벨이 그를 잡아 죽일 거라는 말을 전해 듣고 낙망하여 죽기를 원했습니다. 그러나 충분히 수면을 취하고 천사가 두 차례에 걸쳐 가져다준 음식을 먹고 나서, 하나님께서 그의 기력을 회복시켜 주시자 다시 그의 여정을 계속할 수 있었습니다. 우리의 “갈 길이 아직 많이 남아 있을”(7절, 새번역) 때, 우리는 휴식을 취하고 건강한 좋은 음식을 충분히 섭취할 필요가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 우리가

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

One summer, I faced what seemed an impossible task—a big writing project with a looming deadline. Having spent day after day on my own, endeavoring to get the words onto the page, I felt exhausted and discouraged, and I wanted to give up. A wise friend asked me, “When’s the last time you felt refreshed? Maybe you need to allow
yourself to rest and to enjoy a good meal.” I knew immediately that she was right. Her advice made me think of Elijah and the terrifying message he received from Jezebel (1 KINGS 19:2)— although, of course, my writing project wasn’t anywhere near the cosmic scale of the prophet’s experience. After Elijah triumphed over the false prophets on Mount Carmel, Jezebel sent word that she would capture and kill him, and he despaired, longing to die. But then he enjoyed a good sleep and was twice visited by an angel who gave him
food to eat. After God renewed his physical strength, he was able to continue with his journey. When the “journey is too much” for us (V. 7), we might need to rest and enjoy a healthy and satisfying meal. For when we are exhausted or hungry, we can easily succumb to disappointment or fear. But when God meets our physical needs through His resources, as much as possible in this fallen world, we can take the next step in serving Him. AMY BOUCHER PYE

나는 눈 보호장비와 직접 만든 달 모양의 파이 간식을 준비하고 관찰하기에 아주 이상적인 장소를 찾아 모든 준비를 마쳤습니다. 그러고는 미국 내 수백 만 명의 사람들과 함께 우리 식구 모두 달이 해를 완전히 가리는 보기 드문 완전 개기일식을 지켜봤습니다. 일식으로 어느 밝은 여름 오후가 어둠으로 덮혀버리는 진기한 현상이 일어났습니다. 이 일식은 우리에게 재미있는 행사였고 창조물을 주관하시는 하나님의 엄청난 능력을 다시 되새기게 해주었지만(시편 135:6-7), 역사적으로 대낮의 어둠은 모든 것이 제 자리에 있지 않다는 비정상적이고 두려운 일의 상징으로 여겨졌습니다(출애굽기 10:21; 마태복음 27:45). 고대 이스라엘의 분리 왕국 시절의 아모스 선지자에게도 어둠은 그런 것을 의미했습니다. 아모스는 북왕국에게 그들이 계속 하나님에게서 멀어지면 파멸을 맞을 거라고 경고하면서, 그 한 표시로 하나님께서 “그 날에 해를 대낮에 지게 하여 백주에 땅을 캄캄하게 하실” 거라고 말했습니다(아모스 8:9). 그러나 하나님의 궁극적인 바람과 목적은 예전이나 지금이나 모든 일을 바르게 되돌려놓는 것입니다. 사람들이 포로로 끌려갈 때조차도 하나님은 남은 자들을 예루살렘으로 되돌아오게 하셔서 “그 허물어진 것을 일으켜서 옛적과 같이 세우리라”(9:11)고 약속하셨습니다. 이스라엘처럼 삶이 극도로 암울할 때조차도, 우리는 하나님께서 ‘모든’ 사람들에게 빛과 소망을 주시기 위해 역사하고 계시다는 것을 앎으로 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다(사도행전 15:14-18).

ECLIPSE

I was prepared with eye protection, an ideal viewing location, and homemade moon pie desserts. Along with millions of people in the US, my family watched the rare occurrence of a total solar eclipse—the moon covering the entire disk of the sun. The eclipse caused an unusual darkness to come over the typically bright summer afternoon. Although for us this eclipse was a fun celebration and a reminder of God’s incredible power over creation (PSALM 135:6–7), throughout history darkness during the day has been seen as abnormal and foreboding (EXODUS 10:21; MATTHEW 27:45), a sign that everything is not as it should be. This is what darkness signified for Amos, a prophet during the time of the divided monarchy in ancient Israel. Amos warned the Northern Kingdom that destruction would come if they continued to turn away from God. As a sign, God would “make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight” (AMOS 8:9). But God’s ultimate desire and purpose was—and is—to make all things right. Even when the people were taken into exile, God promised to one day bring a remnant back to Jerusalem and “repair its broken walls and restore its ruins” (9:11). Even when life is at its darkest, like Israel, we can find comfort in
knowing God is at work to bring light and hope back—to all people (ACTS 15:14–18). LISA M. SAMRA

“아, 안 돼!” 아내가 부엌에 들어가며 비명을 질렀습니다. 바로 그 순간, 집에서 기르는 90파운드(약 41킬로그램) 나가는 래브라도 리트리버 개 “맥스”가 부엌에서 쏜살같이 뛰쳐나왔습니다. 부엌 조리대 가 장자리에 아 주 가 깝게 놓 여있던 양 의 다 리가 사라진 것입니다. 맥스가 그것을 먹어치우고 빈 냄비만 뎅그러니 남겨놓았습니다. 맥스는 침대 아래에 숨으려 했지만 머리와 어깨만 가려질 뿐이어서 내가 잡으러 갔을 때 그의 드러난 엉덩이와 꼬리가 그가 어디 숨었는지 다 보여주었습니다. 나는 “맥스, 네 죄가 너를 찾아낼 거야”라고 중얼거렸습니다. 이 말은 모세가 이스라엘의 두 부족에게 하나님께 순종하고 그들의 약속을 지키라고 훈계하면서 했던 말입니다. “너희가 만일 그같이 아니하면 여호와께 범죄함이니 너희 죄가 반드시 너희를 찾아낼 줄 알라”(민수기 32:23). 죄는 잠시 기분을 좋게 해줄지는 몰라도, 궁극적으로 하나님과 멀어지는 고통의 원인이 됩니다. 모세는 하나님은 하나도 놓치지 않고 다 보신다는 것을 그의 백성들에게 상기시켰던 것입니다. 한 성경 저자는 그것을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “지으신 것이 하나도 그 앞에 나타나지 않음이 없고 우리의 결산을 받으실 이의 눈앞에 만물이 벌거벗은 것 같이 드러나느니라”(히브리서 4:13). 모든 것을 다 보시지만, 우리의 거룩하신 하나님은 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하고 회개하고(죄에서 돌이키고) 그분과 올바로 동행하도록 사랑으로 이끌어주십니다(요한1서 1:9). 오늘 우리가 사랑 안에서 그분을 따를 수 있기를 바랍니다.

THE ONE WHO SEES

“Oh no!” My wife’s voice rang out when she stepped into the kitchen. The moment she did, our ninety-pound Labrador retriever “Max” bolted from the room. Gone was the leg of lamb that had been sitting too close to the edge of the counter. Max had consumed it, leaving only an empty pan. He tried to hide under a bed. But only his head and shoulders fit. His uncovered rump and tail betrayed his whereabouts when I went to track him down. “Oh, Max,” I murmured, “Your ‘sin’ will find you out.” The phrase was borrowed from Moses, when he admonished two tribes of Israel to be obedient to God and keep their promises. He told them: “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out” (NUMBERS 32:23). Sin may feel good for a moment, but it causes the ultimate pain of separation from God. Moses was reminding his people that God misses nothing. As one biblical writer put it, “Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (HEBREWS 4:13). Though seeing all, our holy God lovingly draws us to confess our sin, repent of it (turn from it), and walk rightly with Him (1 JOHN 1:9). May we follow Him in love today. JAMES BANKS
