두더지 잡기 게임

당신은 이런 상황이 어떤 것인지 아마 아실 것입니다. 의료 시술을 받은 후 마취 의사, 수술 의사, 여러 검사, 의료기구 사용 등, 그들로부터 청구서가 끊임없이 계속 날아옵니다. 제이슨은 응급 수술을 받은 후에 이런 상황을 겪었습니다. 그는 이렇게 불평합니다. “우리는 보험 처리 후에도 수천 불의 빚을 지고 있어요. 이 청구서들만 해결되면 형편이 나아져서 맘 편히 살 것 같은데! 이건 마치 내가 두더지 잡기 게임을 하고 있는 것 같아요.” 그것은 구멍에서 갑자기 튀어나오는 플라스틱 두더지를 나무망치로 때려서 잡는 게임을 말합니다.

예수님 안에서 안식을 누리는 법을 어떻게 배울 수 있을까요? 그것은 우리가 어느 것에 집중하는가의 문제일 수 있습니다. 주님의 선하심에 대해 즐거워하고 감사하는 것, 신실하신 하나님 아버지에 대해 더 알아가는 것, 신뢰와 인내 속에서 성장해 가는 것, 인생은 내가 아니라 하나님에 관한 것이라는 사실을 인정하는 것, 주님 안에서 만족하는 법을 가르쳐 달라고 그분께 기도하는 것 등 말입니다.

WHACK-A-MOLE

You might know what it’s like. The bills keep arriving after a medical procedure—from the anesthesiologist, the surgeon, the lab, the facility. Jason experienced this after an emergency surgery. He complained, “We owe thousands of dollars after insurance. If only we can get these bills paid, then life will be good and I’ll be content! I feel like I’m playing the arcade game Whack-a-Mole”—where plastic moles pop up from their holes, and the player hits them wildly with a mallet.

Life comes at us like that at times. The apostle Paul certainly could relate. He said, “I know what it is to be in need,” yet he’d “learned the secret of being content in any and every situation” (PHILIPPIANS 4:12). His secret? “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (V. 13). When I was going through a particularly discontented time, I read this on a greeting card: “If it isn’t here, where is it?” That was a powerful reminder that if I’m not content here and now, what makes me think I’d be if only I were in another situation?

How do we learn to rest in Jesus? Maybe it’s a matter of focus. Of enjoying and being thankful for the good. Of learning more about a faithful Father. Of growing in trust and patience. Of recognizing that life is about God and not me. Of asking Him to teach me contentment in Him. - ANNE CETAS

모든 기회

용을 잡아 본 적이 있으십니까? 나도 아들이 시켜서 휴대폰에 게임을 다운로드 받기 전까지는 해본 적이 없었습니다. 그 게임은 실제 세상을 투영한 디지털 지도를 만들어 주변의 다채로운 생명체들을 잡게 해줍니다.

대부분의 휴대폰 게임과는 달리 이 게임을 하려면 움직여야 합니다. 당신이 가는 곳 어디나 게임의 무대가 됩니다. 그 결과, 나는 아주 많이 걷고 있습니다! 아들과 함께 게임을 할 때면 주변에서 불쑥 튀어나오는 생물들을 잡을 수 있는 모든 기회를 놓치지 않으려고 최선을 다합니다.

이용자들을 현혹하기 위해 만들어진 게임에 몰두하거나, 심지어 중독되기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 이 게임을 하면서 나는 ‘내 주변의 영적 기회들을 최대한 활용하기 위해 의식적으로 노력하고 있는가?’ 하는 자책감이 들었습니다.

바울은 일상에서 일어나는 하나님의 일에 깨어 있어야 할 필요성을 알고 있었습니다. 골로새서 4장에서 그는 복음을 전할 기회를 열어주시도록 기도를 부탁했습니다(3절). 그러고는 “믿지 않는 사람들을 대할 때는 지혜롭게 행동하고 기회를 최대한 이용하십시오”(5절, 현대인의 성경)라고 도전하였습니다. 바울은 골로새 성도들이 사람들을 그리스도께 인도할 수 있는 어떤 기회도 놓치지 않기를 바랐던 것입니다. 그러나 그렇게 하려면 진심으로 그들의 필요를 돌아보고, “항상 은혜 가운데서”(6절) 그들을 도와야 했습니다.

EVERY OPPORTUNITY

Ever caught a dragon? I hadn’t until my son convinced me to download a game on my phone. Producing a digital map mirroring the real world, the game allows you to catch colorful creatures near you. Unlike most mobile games, this one requires movement. Anywhere you go is part of the game’s playing field. The result? I’m doing a lot more walking! Anytime my son and I play, we strive to maximize every opportunity to nab the critters that pop up around us.

It’s easy to focus on, even obsess over, a game that’s crafted to captivate users. But as I played the game, I was convicted with this question: Am I this intentional about maximizing the spiritual opportunities around me?

Paul knew the need to be alert to God’s work around us. In Colossians 4, he asked for prayer for an opportunity to share the gospel (V. 3). Then he challenged, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (V. 5). Paul didn’t want the Colossians to miss any chance of influencing others toward Christ. But doing so would require truly seeing them and their needs, then engaging in ways “full of grace” (V. 6).

In our world, far more things vie for our time and attention than a game’s imaginary dragons. But God invites us to navigate a real-world adventure, every day seeking opportunities to point to Him. - ADAM HOLZ

모든 것을 아시는 하나님

샴 과에 속하는 싸움 물고기 핀을 2 년 동안 집에서 길렀습니다. 내 어린 딸은 어항에 먹이를 주고 나서 허리를 숙여 그 물고기와 이야기를 나누곤 했습니다. 유치원에서 애완동물 얘기가 나오면 딸아이는 자랑스럽게 그 물고기가 자기 애완동물이라고 말했습니다. 마침내 핀이 죽자 딸아이는 매우 슬퍼했습니다.

어머니는 나에게 딸아이의 마음을 잘 어루만져주고, “하나님이 모든 것을 다 알고 계신다”고 위로해 주라고 했습니다. 하나님이 모든 것을 다 알고 계신다는 것은 나도 알지만, ‘그것이 과연 딸에게 얼마나 위로가 될 수 있을까?’ 의문이 들었습니다. 그때 문득 하나님은 우리 삶 속에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 아실 뿐만 아니라, 긍휼로 우리 마음을 살피시면서 그 일들이 우리에게 어떤 영향을 끼치는지도 알고 계신다는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님은 “사소한 일”도 우리의 나이나 과거의 상처, 혹은 결핍의 상황에 따라 큰 일로 느껴질 수 있다는 것을 아십니다.

예수님은 한 가난한 과부가 성전의 연보궤에 동전 두 개를 넣었을 때 그 헌신과 그 마음의 진정한 크기를 보셨습니다. 주님은 “이 가난한 과부는 헌금함에 넣는 모든 사람보다 많이 넣었도다...... [이 과부는] 생활비 전부를 넣었느니라”(마가복음 12:43-44)고 말씀하시며 그 동전이 그녀에게 어떤 의미였는지를 설명하셨습니다.

그 과부는 자신의 형편에 대해 아무 말도 하지 않았지만 예수님은 남들이 아주 적은 헌금이라고 생각했던 동전이 그 과부에게는 희생이었다는 것을 아셨습니다. 주님은 우리의 삶도 동일하게 바라보십니다. 주님의 한없는 이해심 가운데 위로를 얻기를 소망합니다.

HE KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT

Finn, a Siamese fighting fish, lived at our house for two years. My young daughter would often bend down to talk with him after dropping food into his tank. When the topic of pets came up in kindergarten, she proudly claimed him as her own. Eventually, Finn passed away, and my daughter was heartbroken.

My mother advised me to listen closely to my daughter’s feelings and tell her, “God knows all about it.” I agreed that God knows everything, yet wondered, How will that be comforting? Then it occurred to me that God isn’t simply aware of the events in our lives—He compassionately sees into our souls and knows how they affect us. He understands that “little things” can feel like big things depending on our age, past wounds, or lack of resources.

Jesus saw the real size of a widow’s gift—and heart—as she dropped two coins into a temple collection box. He described what it meant for her as He said, “This poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. . . . [She put in] all she had to live on” (MARK 12:43–44).

The widow kept quiet about her situation but Jesus recognized that what others considered a tiny donation was a sacrifice to her. He seesour lives in the same way. May we find comfort in His limitless understanding.

함께 나누며 실의를 극복하기

우리는 교통사고로 부인을 잃은 사람과 매번 목요일마다 만났습니다. 그 사람은 가끔 정답이 없는 질문을 하는가 하면, 때로는 다시 경험하고 싶은 추억을 늘어놓기도 했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 그는 그 사고가 우리가 살고 있는 실의에 빠진(타락한) 이 세상 때문에 그렇게 되었지만, 하나님께서는 그 가운데서도 역사하고 계신다는 사실을 받아들이게 되었습니다. 몇 년 후 그는 우리 교회의 성경공부반에서 실의의 고통에 대해, 그리고 어떻게 제대로 슬퍼해야 하는지에 대해 가르쳤습니다. 곧 그는 사람들이 누군가를 잃었을 때 먼저 찾아가서 상의하는 상담자가 되었습니다. 때때로 우리가 하나님께 별로 드릴 것이 없다고 느낄 바로 그때, 하나님은 “우리의 부족함”을 “넘치는 것”으로 만들어 주십니다.

BROKEN TO BE SHARED

We met every Thursday after he lost his wife in a car accident. Sometimes he came with questions to which no answers exist; sometimes he came with memories he wanted to relive. Over time, he accepted that even though the accident was a result of the brokenness in our world, God could work in the midst of it. A few years later, he taught a class at our church about grief and how to lament well. Soon, he became our go-to guide for people experiencing loss. Sometimes it’s when we don’t feel like we have anything to offer that God takes our “not enough” and makes it “more than enough.”

Jesus told His disciples to give the people something to eat. They’d protested that there was nothing to give; Jesus multiplied their meager supplies and then turned back to the disciples and gave them the bread, as if to say, “I meant it: You give them something to eat!” (LUKE 9:13–16). Christ will do the miraculous, but He often chooses to involve us.

Jesus says to us, “Place who you are and what you have in My hands. Your broken life. Your story. Your frailty and your failure, your pain and your suffering. Put it in My hands. You’ll be surprised what I can do with it.” Jesus knows that out of our emptiness, He can bring fullness. Out of our weakness, He can reveal His strength. - GLENN PACKIAM

우리를 지켜보시는 하나님

어린 손자가 헤어질 때 손을 흔들며 인사하더니, 이내 뒤돌아보며 물었습니다. “할머니, 할머니는 왜 우리가 떠날 때까지 현관에 서 계세요?” 나는 아주 어린 손자의 질문이 “귀엽다”고 생각하며 그를 보며 웃었습니다. 그러면서 그 궁금증에 대한 좋은 대답을 생각하다가 말했습니다. “음, 그건 예의란다. 네가 내 손님이라면 네가 떠날 때까지 지켜보는 건 내가 너를 배려한다는 것을 보여주는 거지.” 내 대답을 듣고 아이는 잠시 생각하더니 여전히 수긍이 안 가는 듯 했습니다. 그래서 나는 단순하게 말했습니다. “내가 보는 이유는 내가 너를 사랑하기 때문이야. 네가 탄 차가 길을 빠져나가는 것을 보면서 나는 네가 안전하게 집으로 가고 있다는 것을 아는 거지.” 손자는 웃으며 나를 부드럽게 안아주었습니다. 마침내 알아들은 것입니다.

아이의 천진난만한 이해는 나에게 우리 모두가 기억해야 할 한 가지를 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그것은 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지도 그분의 소중한 자녀 한사람 한사람을 계속해서 지켜보고 계신다는 것입니다. 시편 121편은 말합니다, “여호와는 너를 지키시는 이시라 여호와께서 네 오른쪽에서 네 그늘이 되시나니”(5절).

WATCHED BY GOD

Our little grandson waved goodbye, then turned back with a question. “Grandma, why do you stand on the porch and watch until we leave?” I smiled at him, finding his question “cute” because he’s so young. Seeing his concern, however, I tried to give a good answer. “Well, it’s a courtesy,” I told him. “If you’re my guest, watching until you leave shows I care.” He weighed my answer, but still looked perplexed. So, I told him the simple truth. “I watch,” I said, “because I love you. When I see your car drive away, I know you’re safely heading home.” He smiled, giving me a tender hug. Finally, he understood.

His childlike understanding reminded me what all of us should remember—that our heavenly Father is constantly watching over each of us, His precious children. As Psalm 121 says, “The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand” (V. 5).

What assurance for Israel’s pilgrims as they climbed dangerous roads to Jerusalem to worship. “The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm—he will watch over your life” (VV. 6–7). Likewise, as we each climb our life’s road, sometimes facing spiritual threat or harm, “The Lord will watch over [our] coming and going.” Why? His love. 순전한 예배

호세는 교회를 목회하고 있었는데, 그 교회는 좋은 프로그램들과 연극 공연으로 잘 알려져 있었습니다. 그것들은 아주 잘 돌아가고 있었지만, 그는 교회가 바쁘게 돌아가는 것이 하나의 사업으로 변질된 것 같아 우려하고 있었습니다. 교회가 성장하는 것이 올바른 이유 때문일까, 아니면 교회의 활동 때문일까? 호세는 그것이 알고 싶어 1년간 교회 외적인 모든 행사들을 취소시켰습니다. 이제 교인들은 그들의 교회가 사람들이 하나님을 예배하는 살아 있는 성전이 되는 데 초점을 맞추게 될 것이었습니다.

호세의 이런 결정은 극단적인 것처럼 보이지만, 예수님이 성전 마당에 들어가셨을 때 하셨던 일을 기억하면 이해가 됩니다. 순전한 기도로 가득 차야 할 신성한 장소가 예배 사업으로 번잡한 곳으로 변해 있었습니다. “여러분이 필요한 비둘기가 여기 있습니다! 하나님이 원하시는 백합꽃이 여기 있습니다!” 예수님은 상인들의 상을 엎으시고, 물건을 사지 못하게 하셨습니다. 주님은 그들이 하는 일에 분노하시며 이사야 56장과 예레미야 7장을 인용하여 말씀하셨습니다. “내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집이라 칭함을 받으리라고 하지 아니하였느냐 너희는 강도의 소굴을 만들었도다”(마가복음 11:17). 이방인들이 하나님을 예배하도록 따로 마련된 장소가 돈을 벌기 위한 일상적인 시장으로 변질되었던 것입니다.

분주하게 사는 것이나 사업을 하는 것 자체는 잘못된 것이 아닙니다. 그러나 교회의 본질은 그것이 아닙니다. 우리는 살아 계신 하나님의 성전이며, 우리의 주된 임무는 예수님을 예배하는 것입니다. 우리가 예수님처럼 상을 뒤엎기까지 할 필요는 없겠지만, 그에 상응하는 어떤 과감한 일을 하라고 주님이 요구하실지도 모릅니다.

PURE WORSHIP

Jose pastored a church known for its programs and theatrical productions. They were well done, yet he worried the church’s busyness had slipped into a business. Was the church growing for the right reasons or because of its activities? Jose wanted to find out, so he canceled all extra church events for one year. His congregation would focus on being a living temple where people worshiped God.

Jose’s decision seems extreme, until you notice what Jesus did when He entered the temple’s outer courts. The holy space that should have been full of simple prayers had become a flurry of worship business. “Get your doves here! Lily white, as God requires!” Jesus overturned the merchant’s tables and stopped those who bought their merchandise. Furious at what they were doing, He quoted Isaiah 56 and Jeremiah 7: “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.’ But you have made it ‘a den of robbers’” (MARK 11:17). The court of the gentiles, the place for outsiders to worship God, had been turned into a mundane marketplace for making money.

There’s nothing wrong with business or staying busy. But that’s not the point of church. We’re the living temple of God, and our main task is to worship Jesus. We likely won’t need to flip over any tables as Jesus did, but He may be calling us to do something equally drastic. MIKE WITTMER

말 타기와 올가미 던지기를 겨루는 로데오 시합에 가면, 참가자들의 한 손에 네 손가락만 있고 엄지손가락이 있어야 할 자리에 혹이 있는 것을 보게 됩니다. 그것은 이 시합에서 흔히 생기는 부상입니다. 엄지손가락이 줄의 한 끝과 꽤 큰 황소가 다른 쪽에서 당기는 사이에 끼게 되면 엄지손가락은 대개 잘려 나갑니다. 그것은 그 일을 계속 할 수 없게 만드는 부상은 아니지만, 엄지손가락이 없으면 여러 일에 변화가 생깁니다. 엄지손가락을 쓰지 않으면서 이를 닦거나, 셔츠의 단추를 끼거나, 머리를 빗거나, 구두끈을 매거나, 혹은 먹는 일을 해보십시오. 당신 몸에서 평소에 하찮게 생각했던 부분들이 실제 상당히 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다.

바울 사도는 교회에서 그와 유사한 상황을 지적합니다. 눈에 잘 띄지 않거나 목소리를 내지 않는 교인들은 가끔 다른 이들로부터 “당신은 없어도 돼” 라는 대우를 받는 경우가 있습니다(고린도전서 12:21). 보통은 암묵적으로 눈치를 주는 식이지만, 때로는 노골적으로 표현되기도 합니다.

하나님은 우리가 서로 동등한 관심과 존중하는 마음으로 대하기를 바라십니다(25절). 우리는 모두 각각 그리스도의 몸의 한 부분이며(27절), 우리가 받은 재능이 무엇이든 우리는 서로를 필요로 합니다. 말하자면 우리 중 어떤 이들은 눈이고 귀이며, 어떤 이들은 엄지손가락인 것입니다. 하지만 우리 각각은 그리스도의 몸에서 아주 중요한 역할을 하고 있으며, 때로는 눈에 보이는 것보다 훨씬 더 중요한 역할을 감당합니다.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Attend any rodeo with riding and roping competition and you’ll see them—competitors with four fingers on one hand and a nub where their thumb should be. It’s a common injury in the sport—a thumb gets caught between a rope on one end and a decent-sized steer pulling on the other, and the thumb is usually the loser. It’s not a career-ending injury, but the absence of a thumb changes things. Without using your thumb, try to brush your teeth or button a shirt or comb your hair or tie your shoes or even eat. That little overlooked member of your body plays a significant role.

The apostle Paul indicates a similar scenario in the church. Those often less visible and frequently less vocal members sometimes experience an “I don’t need you” response from the others (1 CORINTHIANS 12:21). Usually this is unspoken, but there are times when it’s said aloud.

God calls us to have equal concern and respect for one other (V. 25). Each and every one of us is a part of Christ’s body (V. 27), regardless of the gifting we’ve received, and we need each other. Some of us are eyes and ears, so to speak, and some of us are thumbs. But each of us plays a vital role in the body of Christ, sometimes more than meets the eye. - JOHN BLASE

두 사람이 더 낫다

1997년 하와이에서 열린 철인 삼종경기에서 두 여성이 결승선을 향하여 절뚝거리며 안간 힘을 다해 달려가고 있었습니다. 기진맥진한 두 선수는 간신히 몸을 가누며 달리다가 시안 웰치 선수가 웬디 잉그램에게 부딪혀 두 사람은 땅에 주저앉고 말았습니다. 둘은 겨우 일어나 비틀거리며 앞으로 나아갔지만 결승선을 20미터 남겨놓고 다시 넘어졌습니다. 잉그램 선수가 엉금엉금 기어가자 관중들이 박수 갈채를 보냈습니다. 그녀의 경쟁자도 따라서 기어가자 사람들은 더 크게 환호했습니다. 잉그램은 4등으로 결승선을 통과하여 지지자들이 벌린 팔 안으로 쓰러졌습니다. 그러고는 뒤로 돌아 넘어져 있는 동료 여자 선수에게 손을 내밀었습니다. 웰치는 힘을 다해 몸을 앞으로 내던지며 그의 지친 팔을 잉그램의 손을 향해 뻗으며 결승선을 넘었습니다. 웰치가 5등으로 경기를 마쳤을 때 관중들은 우레와 같은 함성으로 축하해주었습니다.

수영과 자전거 타기, 달리기 등, 총 140 마일(225 킬로미터)에 이어진 이 두 사람의 경기는 많은 이들을 감동시켰습니다. 그러나 지친 경쟁자들이 끝까지 인내하며 함께 견디는 모습은, 전도서 4:9-11의 말씀이 삶에 힘을 주는 진리임을 확인시켜 주면서 내 마음에 각인되어 남아있습니다.

우리가 살면서 필요한 도움을 받아들이는 것은 부끄러운 일이 아닙니다 (9절). 특히 모든 것을 아시는 하나님으로부터 우리의 어려움을 아닌 척 부인 하거나 숨길 수 없기 때문에 더 그렇습니다. 우리는 모두 때때로 육체적으로나 감정적으로 넘어질 때가 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알 때 우리는 위로를 받고 견딜 수 있습니다. 우리를 도와주시는 사랑의 하나님은 다른 이들이 어려움에 빠져있을 때 그들에게 다가가 그들도 혼자가 아니라는 사실을 확인시켜 주도록 우리에게 능력을 더해주십니다.

TWO ARE BETTER

In the 1997 Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii, two women fought to stay on their feet as they hobbled toward the finish line. Exhausted, the runners persevered on wobbly legs, until Sian Welch bumped into Wendy Ingraham. They both dropped to the ground. Struggling to stand, they stumbled forward, only to fall again about twenty meters from the finish line. When Ingraham began to crawl, the crowd applauded. When her competitor followed suit, they cheered louder. Ingraham crossed the finish line in fourth place, and she slumped into the outstretched arms of her supporters. Then she turned and reached out to her fallen sister. Welch lunged her body forward, stretching her weary arm toward Ingraham’s hand and across the finish line. As she completed the race in fifth place, the crowd roared their approval.

This pair’s completion of the 140-mile swimming, biking, and running race inspired many. But the image of the weary competitors persevering together remains ingrained in my mind, affirming the life-empowering truth in Ecclesiastes 4:9–11.

There’s no shame in admitting we require assistance in life (V. 9), especially since we can’t honestly deny our needs or hide them from our all-knowing God. At one time or another, we’ll all fall, whether physically or emotionally. Knowing we’re not alone can comfort us as we
persevere. As our loving Father helps us, He empowers us to reach out to others in need, affirming they too aren’t alone. - XOCHITL DIXON

어긋난 계획들

제인은 언어치료사가 되려고 계획했지만 인턴을 하는 동안 그 직업이 자신에게 감정적으로 너무 힘든 일이라는 것을 알고는 그 계획을 접었습니다. 그 후 한 잡지사에서 글을 쓰는 직업을 갖게 되었습니다. 제인은 한번도 자신이 작가가 될 거라고는 생각 못했는데, 몇 년이 지난 후 글을 통해 도움이 필요한 가정들을 돕는 작가가 되었습니다. 제인은 말합니다. “지난 날을 되돌아보면 하나님이 제 계획들을 왜 바꾸셨는지 알 것 같아요. 하나님은 저를 위한 더 큰 계획을 가지고 계셨어요.”

성경에도 어긋난 계획들에 대한 이야기가 많이 있습니다. 바울은 두 번째 선교 여행길에서 비두니아로 가고자 했지만 성령께서 허락하지 않으셨습니다 (사도행전 16:6-7). 이 일은 정말 이해가 되지 않았습니다. ‘하나님께서 허락하신 선교의 길을 가려는데 왜 예수님이 막으셨을까?’ 대답은 어느 날 밤 꿈에 나타났습니다. 마게도니아가 그를 더 필요로 한다는 것이었습니다. 바울은 나중에 마게도니아에 유럽의 첫 교회를 세우게 됩니다. 솔로몬도 이렇게 말합니다. “사람의 마음에는 많은 계획이 있어도 오직 여호와의 뜻만이 완전히 서리라”(잠언 19:21).

계획을 세우는 것은 분별 있는 행동입니다. 잘 알려진 격언 중에도 “계획을 세우는데 실패하는 것은 실패하기 위해 계획을 세우는 것과 같다.”는 말이 있습니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리의 계획을 그분의 계획대로 바꾸시기도 합니다. 그럴 때 우리는 하나님이 신뢰할 수 있는 분이라는 것을 알고, 그분의 계획에 귀를 기울이고 순종해야 합니다. 하나님의 뜻에 우리를 맡기면, 우리는 그분의 목적에 맞추어 가는 삶을 살아가게 될 것입니다.

앞으로 계획을 세울 때 한 가지를 더하여, 귀를 기울이겠다는 계획을 세우십시오. 하나님의 계획에 귀를 기울이십시오.

PLANS DISRUPTED

Jane’s plans to become a speech therapist ended when an internship revealed the job was too emotionally challenging for her. Then she was given the opportunity to write for a magazine. She’d never seen herself as an author, but years later she found herself advocating for needy families through her writing. “Looking back, I can see why God changed my plans,” she says. “He had a bigger plan for me.”

The Bible has many stories of disrupted plans. On his second missionary journey, Paul had sought to bring the gospel into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus stopped him (ACTS 16:6–7). This must have seemed mystifying: Why was Jesus disrupting plans that were in line with a Godgiven mission? The answer came in a dream one night: Macedonia needed him even more. There, Paul would plant the first church in Europe. Solomon also observed, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (PROVERBS 19:21).

It’s sensible to make plans. A well-known adage goes, “Fail to plan, and you plan to fail.” But God may disrupt our plans with His own. Our challenge is to listen and obey, knowing we can trust God. If we submit to His will, we’ll find ourselves fitting into His purpose for our lives.

감전

“나는 온 몸이 감전된 것 같은 전율을 느꼈습니다.” 홀리 오드웨이 교수가 존 단의 웅장한 시 “거룩한 소네트 14”를 읽고서 한 말입니다. ‘이 시 속에 무엇인가가 있어. 도대체 그게 무엇일까?’ 오드웨이는 그것을 자신의 무신론적인 세계관이 초자연적인 것의 가능성을 받아들인 순간으로 기억합니다. 마침내 그녀는 부활하신 예수님이 실제 변화되셨다는 사실을 믿게 되었습니다.

감전된 기분. 예수님이 베드로와 야고보, 요한을 산꼭대기에 데려가셨을 때, 예수님의 극적인 변화를 목격한 순간 그들도 분명 그런 기분을 느꼈을 것입니다. 예수님의 “옷이 광채가 나며”(마가복음 9:3) 엘리야와 모세가 나타났던 그 일은 오늘날 우리에게 변화산 사건으로 알려져 있습니다.

산에서 내려오시며 예수님은 제자들에게 주님이 부활하실 때까지 이날 본 것을 아무에게도 말하지 말라고 하셨습니다(9절). 그러나 제자들은 ‘죽은 자 가운데서 살아난다’는 예수님의 말씀이 무엇을 의미하는지조차 알지 못했습니다 (10절).

죽음과 부활을 함께 감당하는 예수님의 운명을 깨닫지 못했기에 제자들의 예수님에 대한 인식은 안타깝게도 불완전한 것이었습니다. 그러나 마침내 부활하신 주님을 경험한 후 그들의 삶은 완전히 변화되었습니다. 베드로는 자신의 말년에 예수님의 변형을 목격한 사실을 말하며, 제자들과 함께 처음 “그의 크신 위엄을 친히 본 자라”(베드로후서 1:16)고 말했습니다.

오드웨이 교수와 예수님의 제자들이 느낀 것처럼, 우리도 예수님의 능력을 목격할 때 “온 몸에 전율을” 느낍니다. 그때 어떤 일이 일어나고 있습니다. 살아계신 예수님이 손짓하며 우리를 부르고 계시는 것입니다.

LIVE WIRE

“I felt like I had touched a live wire,” said Professor Holly Ordway, describing her reaction to John Donne’s majestic poem “Holy Sonnet 14.” There’s something happening in this poetry, she thought. I wonder what it is. Ordway recalls it as the moment her previously atheistic worldview allowed for the possibility of the supernatural. Eventually she would believe in the transforming reality of the resurrected Christ.

Touching a live wire—that must have been how Peter, James, and John felt on the day Jesus took them to a mountaintop, where they witnessed a dramatic transformation. Christ’s “clothes became dazzling white” (MARK 9:3) and Elijah and Moses appeared—an event we know today as the transfiguration.

Descending from the mountain, Jesus told the disciples not to tell anyone what they’d seen until He’d risen (V. 9). But they didn’t even know what He meant by “rising from the dead” (V. 10).

The disciples’ understanding of Jesus was woefully incomplete, because they couldn’t conceive of a destiny that included His death and resurrection. But eventually their experiences with their resurrected Lord would utterly transform their lives. Late in his life, Peter described his encounter with Christ’s transfiguration as the time when the disciples were first “eyewitnesses of his majesty” (2 PETER 1:16).

As Professor Ordway and the disciples learned, when we encounter the power of Jesus we touch a “live wire.” There’s something happening here. The living Christ beckons us. - TIM GUSTAFSON
