너무도 잘 알고 계심

“지금 바로 나가야 합니다. 저 위에 계신 누군가가 당신을 지켜주고 계셨네요.” 견인차 운전사가 우리 어머니의 차를 가파른 산골짜기 가장자리에서 끌어내고 사고지점까지 이어진 타이어자국을 살펴본 후 어머니에게 한 말이었습니다. 그때 어머니는 나를 임신하고 있었습니다. 내가 자라는 동안 어머니는 종종 그날 하나님께서 우리 두 사람을 구해주신 이야기를 들려주시며, 하나님은 내가 태어나기 전부터 나를 귀하게 여기셨다는 것을 확신시켜 주셨습니다.

우리 중 그 누구도 모든 것을 알고 계신 창조주의 눈길에서 벗어날 수 없습니다. 2,500년보다도 더 이전에, 그분은 예레미야 선지자에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 너를 모태에 짓기 전에 너를 알았노라”(예레미야 1:5). 누구보다도 우리를 더 자세히 아시는 하나님은 다른 어느 누구도 주지 못하는 삶의 목적과 의미를 우리에게 주십니다. 그분은 지혜와 권능으로 우리를 지으셨을 뿐 아니라, 우리가 존재하는 모든 순간을 지켜주고 계십니다. 우리 심장의 박동에서부터 우리 뇌의 복잡한 기능에 이르기까지. 우리가 인지하지 못해도 매 순간 일어나는 개인적인 크고 작은 일들을 지켜주십니다. 우리 존재의 모든 면을 함께 주관하시는 하나님 아버지를 떠올리면서 다윗은 이렇게 부르짖었습니다. “하나님이여 주의 생각이 내게 어찌 그리 보배로우신지요” (시편 139:17).

하나님은 우리가 이제 막 내쉰 숨결보다도 더 가까이 계십니다. 그분은 우리를 지으셨고 우리를 아시며 우리를 사랑하시기에, 우리의 예배와 찬양을 받으시기에 언제나 합당하신 분이십니다.

FULLY KNOWN

“You shouldn’t be here right now. Someone up there was looking out for you,” the tow truck driver told my mother after he had pulled her car from the edge of a steep mountain ravine and studied the tire tracks leading up to the wreck. Mom was pregnant with me at the time. As I grew, she often recounted the story of how God saved both our lives that day, and she assured me that God valued me even before I was born.

None of us escape our omniscient (all-knowing) Creator’s notice. More than 2,500 years ago He told the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (JEREMIAH 1:5). God knows us more intimately than any person ever could and is able to give our lives purpose and meaning unlike any other. He not only formed us through His wisdom and power, but He also sustains every moment of our existence— including the personal details that occur every moment without our awareness: from the beating of our hearts to the intricate functioning of our brains. Reflecting on how our heavenly Father holds together every aspect of our existence, David exclaimed, “How precious to me are your thoughts, God!” (PSALM 139:17).

God is closer to us than our last breath. He made us, knows us, and loves us, and He’s ever worthy of our worship and praise. JAMES BANKS

떠나라는 부르심

젊었을 때, 나는 고등학교 때부터 사귀었던 남자친구와 결혼하리라고 생각하고 있다가 그만 헤어지게 되었습니다. 나의 미래가 허무하게 눈 앞에서 사라졌고, 앞으로 인생을 어떻게 살아야 할지 고민이 되었습니다. 마침내 나는 하나님께서 다른 사람들을 섬김으로써 하나님을 섬기도록 나를 인도하신다는 것을 깨닫고 신학교에 등록했습니다. 그러자 고향, 친구 및 가족들과 헤어져야만 하는 현실이 눈 앞에 다가왔습니다. 그러나 하나님의 부르심에 응답하기 위해 나는 떠나야 했습니다.

예수님은 갈릴리 해변을 걸으시다가 베드로와 그의 형제 안드레가 그들의 생업인 고기잡이를 하느라 바다에 그물을 던지는 것을 보시고, 그들에게 “나를 따라오라...... 내가 너희를 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라” (마태복음 4:19)고 부르셨습니다. 그리고 다른 두 명의 어부, 야고보와 그의 형제 요한을 보시고 그들도 비슷하게 부르셨습니다(21절).

이 제자들이 예수님을 따랐을 때 그들 역시 무언가를 버리고 따랐습니다. 베드로와 안드레는 “그물은 버려 두었고”(20절), 야고보와 요한은 “배와 아버지를 버려 두고 예수를 따랐습니다”(22절). 누가는 그것을 이렇게 기술했습니다. “그들이 배를 육지에 대고 ‘모든 것’을 버려 두고 예수를 따르니라”(누가복음 5:11).

예수님의 부르심은 모두다 그물이나 배, 아버지, 친구들, 집 같은 다른 무언가로부터 떠나라는 부르심을 포함합니다. 하나님은 그분과 관계를 맺도록 우리 모두를 부르시고, 그런 다음 그분을 섬기도록 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 따로 부르십니다.

A CALL TO LEAVE

As a young woman, I imagined myself married to my high school sweetheart—until we broke up. My future yawned emptily before me and I struggled with what to do with my life. At last I sensed God leading me to serve Him by serving others and enrolled in seminary. Then the reality crashed through that I’d be moving away from my roots, friends, and family. In order to respond to God’s call, I had to leave.

Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee when He saw Peter and his brother Andrew casting nets into the sea, fishing for a living. He invited them to “Come, follow me . . . and I will send you out to fish for people” (MATTHEW 4:19). Then Jesus saw two other fishermen, James and his brother John, and offered them a similar invitation (V. 21).

When these disciples came to Jesus, they also left something. Peter and Andrew “left their nets” (V. 20). James and John “left the boat and their father and followed him” (V. 22). Luke puts it this way: “So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him” (LUKE 5:11).

Every call to Jesus also includes a call from something else. Net. Boat. Father. Friends. Home. God calls all of us to a relationship with Himself. Then He calls each of us to serve. - ELISA MORGAN

하나의 목표와 목적

2018년 지구력 운동선수인 콜린 오브래디는 지금까지 그 누구도 시도해 보지 않았던 도보 모험을 감행하였습니다. 보급품 썰매를 앞에서 끌면서 오브래디는 54일에 걸쳐 홀로 932마일(1500 킬로미터)의 남극대륙을 횡단한 것입니다. 그것은 헌신과 용기로 이룩한 역사에 남을 여정이었습니다.

오브래디는 얼음과 추위 속에서 그 엄청난 장거리를 홀로 보낸 시간을 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 그 시간 내내 전력을 다해 몰입하여 깊은 평정심을 유지하는 동시에, 오직 최종 목표에 집중하면서 마음 속으로 이 여정이 내게 주는 심오한 교훈들을 하나 하나 곱씹어 보았습니다.”

예수님을 믿는 우리에게는 그 말이 공감이 갑니다. 신앙인으로서 우리의 소명과 상당히 닮아 보이기 때문입니다. 즉 하나님께 영광 돌리며 (영화롭게 하며) 그분을 다른 사람들에게 나타내며 살아가는데 삶의 목표를 집중하는 것 말입니다. 여러 가지 위험한 인생여정을 겪었던 바울은 사도행전 20장 24절에서 이렇게 말합니다. “내가 달려갈 길과 주께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치려 함에는 나의 생명조차 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니하노라.”

우리가 예수님과의 관계 속에서 살아갈 때, 우리가 알고 있는 삶의 목적을 잘 인식하고 우리 구주와 대면할 그 날까지 정진할 수 있기를 소원합니다.

A GOAL AND A PURPOSE

In 2018, endurance athlete Colin O’Brady took a walk that had never been taken before. Pulling a supply sled behind him, O’Brady trekked across Antarctica entirely alone—a total of 932 miles in 54 days. It was a momentous journey of dedication and courage.

Commenting on his time alone with the ice, the cold, and the daunting distance, O’Brady said, “I was locked in a deep flow state [fully immersed in the endeavor] the entire time, equally focused on the end goal, while allowing my mind to recount the profound lessons of this journey.”

For those of us who have put our faith in Jesus, that statement might strike a familiar chord. It sounds a lot like our calling as believers: focused on the goal of walking through life in a way that glorifies (honors) God and reveals Him to others. In Acts 20:24, Paul, no stranger to dangerous journeys, said, “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

As we walk on in our relationship with Jesus, may we recognize what we know about the purpose for our journey and press on to the day we’ll see our Savior face to face. DAVE BRANON

비밀

가끔 내 고양이 히드클리프가 심한 포모(Fear of Missing Out 상실 공포감)에 걸려있는 것은 아닌지 의심이 들 때가 있습니다. 내가 식료품을 사가지고 집에 오면 히드클리프는 무얼 사왔는지 보려고 달려옵니다. 야채를 다듬고 있으면 뒷발로 몸을 세우고 서서 야채를 쳐다보며 자기도 좀 달라고 구걸합니다. 하지만 정작 그가 좋아함직한 음식을 주면, 금방 흥미를 잃어버리고 기분 나쁘다는 듯이 가 버립니다.

하지만 그렇다고 내가 만일 이 꼬마 친구를 야단친다면 그것은 내가 위선적이기 때문일 것입니다. 그의 태도 에서 “현재”로는 결코 충분치 않다는 생각에 더 많은 것을 원하며 만족할 줄 모르는 나의 배고픔이 엿보이기 때문 입니다.

바울에 의하면, 만족이란 타고 나는 것이 아니라 배워야 하는 것입니다(빌립보서 4:11). 우리 자신도 무엇이든 만족을 얻는 것이라 생각하여 필사적으로 추구하다가, 만족을 얻지 못한다고 깨닫는 순간 다른 것으로 옮겨 갑니다. 그러다가 어떤 때는 우리에게 위협이 될지 모르는 어떤 일로부터 스스로를 보호하는 모습으로 불만이 나타나기도 합니다.

역설적이지만, 가끔은 진정한 즐거움에 빠져들기 위해서는 가장 무서워하는 것을 일부러 경험할 필요도 있습니다. 최악의 삶을 많이 경험했던 바울은 진정한 만족의 “비밀”을 직접 체험으로 증언할 수 있었습니다(11-12절). 신비로운 사실은, 온전해지고자 하는 갈망을 하나님께 올려드리면 그리스도의 능력과 아름다움과 은혜의 깊숙한 곳으로 더 깊이 들어가 설명하기 힘든 평강을 경험한다는 것입니다(6-7절).

The Secret

Sometimes I suspect my cat Heathcliff suffers from a bad case of FOMO (fear of missing out). When I come home with groceries, Heathcliff rushes over to inspect the contents. When I’m chopping vegetables, he stands up on his back paws peering at the produce and begging me to share. But when I actually give Heathcliff whatever’s caught his fancy, he quickly loses interest, walking away with an air of bored resentment.

But it’d be hypocritical for me to be hard on my little buddy. He reflects a bit of my own insatiable hunger for more, my assumption that “now” is never enough.

According to Paul, contentment isn’t natural—it’s learned (PHILIPPIANS 4:11). On our own, we desperately pursue whatever we think will satisfy, moving on to the next thing the minute we realize it won’t. Other times, our discontent takes the form of anxiously shielding ourselves from any and all suspected threats.

Ironically, sometimes it takes experiencing what we’d feared the most in order to stumble into real joy. Having experienced much of the worst life has to offer, Paul could testify firsthand to “the secret” of true contentment (VV. 11–12)—the mysterious reality that as we lift up to God our longings for wholeness, we experience unexplainable peace (VV. 6–7), carried ever deeper into the depths of Christ’s power, beauty, and grace. 인내하는 믿음

어니스트 섀클턴(1874-1922)은 1914년 남극 대륙을 횡단하는데 실패했던 탐험대의 대장이었습니다. ‘엔듀런스(인내)’라는 이름이 어울리는 그의 배가 웨델해에서 두꺼운 얼음에 갇혔을 때, 그 배는 단지 살아남기 위한 인내의 경주를 하게 되었습니다. 바깥 세계와 통신도 두절된 채 섀클턴과 그의 승무원들은 구명정을 이용하여 가장 가까운 해안인 코끼리섬으로 향했습니다. 대부분의 승무원이 섬에서 구조를 기다리는 동안, 섀클턴과 다섯 명의 승무원은 2주 동안 800마일(약 1300킬로미터)의 바다를 가로 질러 사우스조지아에 가서 코끼리섬에 남아 있는 선원들을 구조해달라고 도움을 요청했습니다. 그들의 용기와 인내 덕분에 섀클턴의 모든 승무원들이 살아남게 되어 이 “실패한” 탐험은 승리의 사건으로 역사책에 기록되었습니다.

The Faith to Endure

Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) led an unsuccessful expedition to cross Antarctica in 1914. When his ship, aptly named Endurance, became trapped in heavy ice in the Weddell Sea, it became an endurance race just to survive. With no means of communicating with the rest of the world, Shackleton and his crew used lifeboats to make the journey to the nearest shore— Elephant Island. While most of the crew stayed behind on the island, Shackleton and five crewmen spent two weeks traveling 800 miles across the ocean to South Georgia to get help for those left behind. The “failed” expedition became a victorious entry in the history books when all of Shackleton’s men survived, thanks to their courage and endurance.

The apostle Paul knew what it meant to endure. During a stormy sea voyage to Rome to face trial for his belief in Jesus, Paul learned from an angel of God that the ship would sink. But the apostle kept the men aboard encouraged, thanks to God’s promise that all would survive, despite the loss of the ship (ACTS 27:23–24).

When disaster strikes, we tend to want God to immediately make everything better. But God gives us the faith to endure and grow. As Paul wrote to the Romans, “Suffering produces endurance” (ROMANS 5:3 ESV). Knowing that, we can encourage each other to keep trusting God in hard times. LINDA WASHINGTON

예기치 못한 변화

1943년 1월, 따뜻한 치누크 바람이 사우스다코다 주의 스피어피쉬에 불어와 섭씨 영하 20도이던 기온이 영상 7도로 빠르게 올라갔습니다. 27도의 온도 차이를 가져온 이 엄청난 날씨 변화는 불과 2분 안에 일어났습니다. 미국에서 24시간 동안에 일어난 가장 큰 온도 변화의 기록은 어마어마하게도 57도입니다! 1972년 1월 15일, 몬타나 주의 로마에서 섭씨 영하 48도에서 영상 9도로 온도가 뛰었습니다.

그러나 급격한 변화는 단순히 기상 현상에만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 때로는 우리 삶의 모습이 바로 그렇습니다. 야고보는 우리에게 이렇게 상기시켜 줍니다. “들으라 너희 중에 말하기를 오늘이나 내일이나 어떤 도시에 가서 거기서 일 년을 머물며 장사하여 이익을 보리라 하는 자들아 내일 일을 너희가 알지 못하는도다”(4:13-14). 예상치 못한 손실과 뜻밖의 진단, 경제적인 좌절 등, 갑작스러운 변화들이 발생합니다.

인생은 예측할 수 없는 요소가 많은 여정입니다. 이것이 바로 야고보가 전능자를 고려하지 않은 “허탄한 자랑”(16절)에서 벗어나라고 우리에게 경고한 이유입니다. 그는 “주의 뜻이면 우리가 살기도 하고 이것이나 저것을 하리라 말해야 한다”(15절)고 충고합니다. 우리 삶에서 일어나는 일들은 불확실할지 모르지만 한 가지 확실한 것이 있습니다. 그것은 인생의 예기치 못한 모든 순간에도 우리 하나님은 결코 우리를 떠나지 않으신다는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 일생 동안 변하지 않는 유일한 분이십니다.

Unexpected Change

In January 1943, warm Chinook winds hit Spearfish, South Dakota, quickly raising the temperatures from –4° to 45°F (–20° to 7°C). That drastic weather change—a swing of 49 degrees—took place in just two minutes. The widest temperature change recorded in the USA over a twenty-four-hour period is an incredible 103 degrees! On January 15, 1972, Loma, Montana, saw the temperature jump from −54° to 49°F (–48° to 9°C).

Sudden change, however, is not simply a weather phenomenon. It’s sometimes the very nature of life. James reminds us, “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow” (4:13–14). An unexpected loss. A surprise diagnosis. A financial reversal. Sudden changes.

Life is a journey with many unpredictable elements. This is precisely why James warns us to turn from “arrogant schemes” (V. 16) that do not take the Almighty into account. As he advised us, “You ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that’ ” (V. 15). The events of our lives may be uncertain, but one thing is sure: through all of life’s unexpected moments, our God will never leave us. He’s our one constant throughout life. BILL CROWDER

기쁨에 관한 여러 가지 생각

빌 샤피로의 인터뷰 모음집 ‘우리가 간직하는 것’에는 인터뷰에 응한 각 사람들이 삶에서 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 소중하고 기쁨이 되는 항목 하나씩을 말하는 대목이 있습니다.

이 대목을 읽으면서 내가 가진 물건 중에 무엇이 가장 의미 있고 기쁨을 주는지 생각해 보았습니다. 하나는 40년 전 어머니가 친필로 쓴 조리법 카드이고 또 다른 하나는 할머니의 분홍빛 찻잔입니다. 어떤 사람들은 다른 여러 가지 기억들을 소중하게 생각할지도 모릅니다. 그들을 격려해 준 칭찬의 말이나 손주의 키득거림, 성경을 읽다가 얻는 특별한 영감 같은 것들입니다.

하지만 우리가 가끔 마음속에 감춰 두고 있는 것은 우리에게 큰 불행을 가져다준 것들입니다. 그것들은 지금은 감춰져 있으나 쉽게 드러날 수 있는 불안함, 수면 아래 있지만 언제 폭발할지 모르는 분노, 그리고 조용히 우리 생각의 핵심을 무너뜨리는 적개심 같은 것들입니다.

바울 사도는 빌립보 교회에 보내는 편지에서 좀 더 긍정적으로 “생각”하는 방법을 말하고 있습니다. 그는 교회의 교인들에게 항상 기뻐하고 온유하며 모든 것을 하나님께 기도로 아뢰라고 권면합니다 (빌립보서 4:4-9).

Thoughts of Joy

In What We Keep, a collection of interviews by Bill Shapiro, each person tells of a single item that holds such importance and joy that he or she would never part with it.

This caused me to reflect on the possessions that mean the most to me and bring me joy. One is a simple forty-year-old recipe card in my mom’s handwriting. Another is one of my grandma’s pink teacups. Other people may value treasured memories—a compliment that encouraged them, a grandchild’s giggle, or a special insight they gleaned from Scripture.

What we often keep stashed away in our hearts, though, are things that have brought us great unhappiness: Anxiety—hidden, but easily retrieved. Anger—below the surface, but ready to strike. Resentment—silently corroding the core of our thoughts.

The apostle Paul addressed a more positive way to “think” in a letter to the church at Philippi. He encouraged the people of the church to always rejoice, to be gentle, and to bring everything to God in prayer (PHILIPPIANS 4:4–9).

Paul’s uplifting words on what to think about helps us see that it’s possible to push out dark thoughts and allow the peace of God to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (V. 7). It’s when the thoughts that fill up our minds are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and praiseworthy that we keep His peace in our hearts (V. 8). CINDY HESS KASPER

하나님께 대하여 부요함

대공황 시기에 자라나신 우리 부모님은 어렸을 때 고생을 많이 하셨습니다. 그 결과 부모님은 열심히 일하시며 감사하는 재물의 청지기로 사셨습니다. 하지만 결코 욕심을 부리지 않으시고, 교회나 자선 단체, 가난한 사람들에게 시간과 재능과 물질을 드렸습니다. 정말 부모님은 돈을 현명하게 다루셨고 기쁜 마음으로 기부하셨습니다.

예수님을 믿는 신자이신 부모님은 바울 사도의 경고를 마음에 새기셨습니다. “부하려 하는 자들은 시험과 올무와 여러 가지 어리석고 해로운 욕심에 떨어지나니 곧 사람으로 파멸과 멸망에 빠지게 하는 것이라”(디모데전서 6:9).

이 충고는 바울이 재물이 모든 사람을 유혹했던 부유한 도시 에베소의 젊은 목회자 디모데에게 주었던 것입니다.

바울은 또 이렇게 경고합니다. “돈을 사랑함이 일만 악의 뿌리가 되나니 이것을 탐내는 자들은 미혹을 받아 믿음에서 떠나 많은 근심으로써 자기를 찔렀도다”(10절).

그렇다면 탐욕에 대한 해독제가 무엇일까요? 예수님은 그것이 “하나님께 대하여 부요하게” 되는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(누가복음 12:13-21 참조). 무엇보다 우리 하나님 아버지를 찾고 감사하고 사랑하면 하나님은 우리의 최고의 기쁨으로 존재하시게 됩니다. 시편 기자는 이렇게 썼습니다. “아침에 주의 인자하심이 우리를 만족하게 하사 우리를 일생 동안 즐겁고 기쁘게 하소서”(시편 90:14).

날마다 하나님 안에서 즐거워하면 우리는 만족을 얻고 탐심에서 벗어나게 됩니다. 예수님이 우리 마음의 욕심을 없애시고 하나님께 대하여 부요하게 만들어 주시기를 소원합니다!

Rich Toward God

Growing up during the Great Depression, my parents knew deep hardship as children. As a result, they were hardworking and grateful money stewards. But they were never greedy. They gave time, talent, and treasury to their church, charity groups, and the needy. Indeed, they handled their money wisely and gave cheerfully.

As believers in Jesus, my parents took to heart the apostle Paul’s warning: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction” (1 TIMOTHY 6:9).

Paul gave this advice to Timothy, the young pastor of the city of Ephesus, a wealthy city where riches tempted all.

“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil,” Paul warned. “Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (V. 10).

What, then, is the antidote to greed? Being “rich toward God,” said Jesus (SEE LUKE 12:13–21). By pursuing, appreciating, and loving our heavenly Father above all, He remains our chief delight. As the psalmist wrote, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (PSALM 90:14).

Rejoicing in Him daily relieves us of coveting, leaving us contented. May Jesus redeem our heart’s desires, making us rich toward God! PATRICIA RAYBON

예수님에 의해 자유롭게

“함께 살던 어머니가 결국 못 견디고 나가셨어요!” 마음을 바로 잡고 예수님께 엎드리기 이전에 아름답지 못한 삶을 살았던 케이씨가 한 말입니다. 그는 물건을 훔치면서 상습적으로 마약을 해온 것을 솔직하게 인정합니다. 심지어 사랑하는 사람들의 물건까지도 훔쳤다고 합니다. 이제 그런 삶은 그의 과거가 되었으며 마약 없이 지낸 날과 달, 햇수를 기록하면서 건전한 삶을 실천합니다. 케이씨와 정기적으로 하나님 말씀을 함께 공부하면서 나는 지금 변화된 사람을 보고 있습니다.

마가복음 5장 15절은 전에 마귀에게 붙들렸다가 역시 변화된 사람에 대해 이야기합니다. 치유되기 전에는 ‘도움도 없고 소망도 없고 집도 없으며 절망적’ 이라는 말들이 그 사람에게 딱 맞는 말이었습니다(3-5절). 하지만 예수님이 그를 자유롭게 하신 후 모든 것이 변했습니다(13절). 그러나 케이씨처럼, 예수님을 만나기 전 그의 삶도 정상적인 것과는 거리가 멀었습니다. 마귀에게 붙들렸던 그가 밖으로 표현한 내면의 혼란은 오늘날 사람들이 경험하는 것과 결코 다르지 않습니다. 오늘날 상처받은 사람 중에는 버려진 건물이나 자동차, 그 외 다른 곳에 사는 사람들도 있고, 어떤 사람들은 비록 자기 집에서 살지만 감정적으로 외톨이입니다. 보이지 않는 사슬이 다른 사람들로부터 거리를 두도록 마음과 생각을 묶어버립니다.

예수님 안에는 우리에게 과거와 현재의 아픔과 부끄러움이 있어도 우리가 신뢰할 수 있는 그런 한 분이 있습니다. 그리고 케이씨와 군대귀신에 붙들렸던 그 사람처럼, 하나님은 오늘 그분께로 달려오는 모든 사람들에게 자비의 팔을 벌리고 기다리고 계십니다(19절).

Liberated by Jesus

“I lived with my mother so long that she moved out!” Those were the words of KC, whose life before sobriety and surrender to Jesus was not pretty. He candidly admits supporting his drug habit by stealing—even from loved ones. That life is behind him now and he rehearses this by noting the years, months, and days he’s been clean. When KC and I regularly sit down to study God’s Word together, l’m looking at a changed man.

Mark 5:15 speaks of a former demon-possessed individual who had also been changed. Prior to his healing, helpless, hopeless, homeless, and desperate are words that fit the man (VV. 3–5). But all of that changed after Jesus liberated him (V. 13). But, as with KC, his life before Jesus was far from normal. His internal turmoil that he expressed externally is not unlike what people experience today. Some hurting people dwell in abandoned buildings, vehicles, or other places; some live in their own homes but are emotionally alone. Invisible chains shackle hearts and minds to the point that they distance themselves from others.

In Jesus, we have the One who can be trusted with our pain and the shame of the past and present. And, as with Legion and KC, He waits with open arms of mercy for all who run to Him today (V. 19). ARTHUR JACKSON

가시에 찔린 사랑

카알라는 전화도 하고 문자도 보냈습니다. 지금 카알라는 남동생의 집 문 밖에서 그를 깨워 대답을 들을 방법이 없어서 그냥 서 있었습니다. 우울증에 시달리고 중독과 싸우느라 동생은 집 안에만 틀어박혀 있었습니다. 고립된 동생에게 다가가려는 간절함으로 카알라는 용기를 주는 성경구절과 함께 그가 좋아하는 음식 몇 가지를 모아 담장 너머로 꾸러미를 내려놓았습니다.

그러나 그 꾸러미가 손을 벗어나면서 문의 뾰족한 못에 걸려 찢어져 내용물들이 아래 자갈길 위로 쏟아졌습니다. 카알라가 애써 사랑을 담아 베푼 것이 쏟아져버려 낭비된 것 같이 보였습니다. 동생이 누나의 선물을 받아보기나 할까요? 그 선물에 담긴 누나의 희망이 제대로 전달될 수 있을까요? 카알라는 오직 동생의 치유를 기다리면서 소망을 가지고 기도할 수밖에 없습니다.

하나님은 세상을 이처럼 사랑하셔서 (본질적으로) 우리 죄의 담장을 넘어 그분의 독생자를 내려주시고 지치고 버려진 세상에 사랑과 치유의 선물을 가져오셨습니다(요한복음 3:16). 이사야 선지자는 이사야 53장 5절에서 이 사랑의 행동의 대가를 예언한 바 있습니다. 바로 그 아들 예수님이 “우리의 허물 때문에 찔리고 우리의 죄악 때문에 상함을 받는다”고 말입니다. 예수님의 상처는 궁극적인 치유의 소망을 가져다 줄 것입니다. 예수님은 “우리 모두의 죄악”(6절)을 직접 짊어지셨습니다.

우리의 죄와 우리의 부족함 때문에 가시에 찔리신, 하나님의 선물인 예수님께서 오늘날 우리 시대에 새로운 능력과 관점으로 들어오십니다. 이 하나님의 선물이 당신에게 어떤 의미가 있습니까?

Pierced Love

She’d called. She’d texted. Now Carla stood outside her brother’s gated entry, unable to rouse him to answer. Burdened with depression and fighting addiction, her brother had hidden himself away in his home. In a desperate attempt to penetrate his isolation, Carla gathered several of his favorite foods along with encouraging Scriptures and lowered the bundle over the fence.

But as the package left her grip, it snagged on one of the gate spikes, tearing an opening and sending its contents onto the gravel below. Her well-intended, love-filled offering spilled out in seeming waste. Would her brother even notice her gift? Would it accomplish the mission of hope she’d intended? She can only hope and pray as she waits for his healing.

God so loved the world that—in essence—He lowered His one and only Son over the wall of our sin, bringing gifts of love and healing into our weary and withdrawn world (JOHN 3:16). The prophet Isaiah predicted the cost of this act of love in Isaiah 53:5. This very Son would be “pierced for our transgressions, . . . crushed for our iniquities.” His wounds would bring the hope of ultimate healing. He took on Himself “the iniquity of us all” (V. 6).

Pierced by spikes for our sin and need, God’s gift of Jesus enters our days today with fresh power and perspective. What does His gift mean to you? ELISA MORGAN
