하얀 눈의 기적

17세기에 아이작 뉴턴 경은 프리즘을 사용하여 빛이 어떻게 우리가 다른 색상을 볼 수 있게 하는지를 연구했습니다. 그는 빛이 물체를 통과할 때 그 물체가 특정한 색을 가진 것처럼 보이는 것을 알았습니다. 하나의 얼음 결정체는 투명해 보이지만, 눈은 분말 같은 많은 얼음 결정체들이 모여서 만들어집니다. 빛이 그 모든 결정체들을 통과하면 눈은 하얗게 보입니다.

성경은 특정한 색을 지닌 다른 어떤 것, 죄에 대해 이야기를 합니다. 하나님은 유다 백성들의 죄를 보시고, 이사야 선지자를 통해 그들의 죄를 “주홍 같고”, “진홍 같이 붉다”고 묘사하셨습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들이 “눈과 같이 희어질”(이사야 1:18) 것이라고 약속하셨습니다. 어떻게요? 유다 백성들은 그릇된 행동으로부터 돌아서서 하나님께 용서를 구해야 했습니다.

예수님 덕분에 우리는 언제나 하나님의 용서를 받을 수 있습니다. 예수님은 자신을 “세상의 빛”이라 이르시고, 누구든지 그를 따르는 자는 결코 “어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”(요한복음 8:12)고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리가 죄를 고백하면 하나님은 우리를 용서하시고, 십자가에 달리신 그리스도의 희생의 빛을 통해 우리의 모습을 보십니다. 이것은 하나님께서 흠 없으신 예수님을 보시는 것처럼 우리도 그렇게 보신다는 것을 의미합니다.

우리는 잘못한 일에 대한 죄책감과 수치심에 빠져 있을 필요가 없습니다. 그 대신 우리를 “눈처럼 희게” 만드시는 하나님의 용서의 진리를 붙잡아야 합니다.

The Miracle of White Snow

In the seventeenth century, Sir Isaac Newton used a prism to study how light helps us see different colors. He found that when light passes through an object, the object appears to possess a specific color. While a single ice crystal looks translucent, snow is made up of many ice crystals smashed together. When light passes through all of the crystals, snow appears to be white.

The Bible mentions something else that has a certain color—sin. Through the prophet Isaiah, God confronted the sins of the people of Judah and described their sin as “like scarlet” and as “red as crimson.” But God promised they would “be as white as snow” (ISAIAH 1:18). How? Judah needed to turn away from wrongdoing and seek God’s forgiveness.

Thanks to Jesus, we have permanent access to God’s forgiveness. Jesus called Himself “the light of the world” and said whoever follows Him “will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (JOHN 8:12). When we confess our sins, God forgives us and we’re seen through the light of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. This means that God sees us as He sees Jesus—blameless.

We don’t have to wallow in the guilt and shame of what we’ve done wrong. Instead, we can hold on to the truth of God’s forgiveness, which makes us “white as snow.” LINDA WASHINGTON

우리 동네도 다른 동네에서처럼 인터넷 웹사이트가 있어서 이웃사람들이 주변 사람들과 즉시 연결되도록 도와줍니다. 우리 지역에서는 산에 사는 맹수 퓨마가 나타났을 때나 산불 대피령이 내렸을 때도 서로 경고해 줍니다. 뿐만 아니라 필요하면 아이를 서로 봐주기도 하지요. 웹사이트는 또한 달아난 애완동물의 위치를 파악하는데 도움이 되기도 했습니다. 인터넷의 힘 덕분에 오늘날의 급변하는 세상에서 종종 멀어졌던 이웃들이 다시 가까워지고 있습니다.

가까이 사는 사람들과의 관계는 오래 전 솔로몬 왕 시대에도 중요했습니다. 가족 관계가 정말 중요하며 큰 도움을 줄 수 있는 바탕이지만, 솔로몬 왕은 ‘친구’의 역할이 특히 “환난 날에”(잠언 27:10) 아주 중요하다고 지적합니다. 친척들은 가족 구성원들을 매우 소중히 생각하고 힘든 상황에서 도움을 간절히 주고 싶어 할 것입니다. 하지만 멀리 떨어져 있다면 정작 재난이 닥쳤을 때 그들은 아무것도 해줄 수 없습니다. 그러나 이웃들은 가까이 있기 때문에 무엇이 필요한지 금방 알고 당장 도움을 줄 수 있습니다.

기술이 발달하여 지구의 반대편에 있는 사랑하는 사람들과도 쉽게 연결될 수 있기 때문에 우리는 근처에 사는 사람들을 간과하기 쉽습니다. ‘예수님, 주님께서 우리 이웃에 두신 사람들과 관계를 잘 맺을 수 있도록 도와주소서!’

Nearby Neighbors

Our neighborhood, like many others, uses a website to help neighbors connect immediately with those surrounding them. In my community, members warn one another of mountain lion sightings and wildfire evacuation orders, as well as supply one another with child care when the need arises. It has even proven to be a resource for locating runaway pets. By leveraging the power of the internet, those living near one another are connecting again in ways that are often lost in today’s fastpaced world.

Being in relationship with those who live nearby was also important long ago in the days of King Solomon. While family relationships are truly important and can be a source of great support, Solomon indicates that the role of a friend is vital—especially when “disaster strikes” (PROVERBS 27:10). Relatives might care deeply for their family members and desire to be of help in such circumstances. But if they’re far away, there’s little they can do in the moments when calamity strikes. Neighbors, however, because they’re close by, are likely to know of the need quickly and can assist more readily.

Because technology has made it easier than ever to remain connected with loved ones across the globe, we may be tempted to overlook those living nearby. Jesus, help us invest in relationships with the people You’ve placed around us! KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

1994년 두 달 동안 르완다에서는 100만 명가량의 투치족 사람들이 같은 나라 사람들을 죽이기에 혈안이 된 후투족에 의해 학살당했습니다. 이 끔찍한 인종 집단학살 후에 조프리 루부시시 주교는 사랑하는 가족을 학살당한 여성들을 위로하고자 아내에게 도움을 청했습니다. 그러자 그의 아내 메리는 “나는 그냥 울기만 할 것”이라고 대답했습니다. 그 역시 가족을 잃었기 때문입니다. 주교는 지혜로운 지도자이자 배려 있는 남편답게 이렇게 말했습니다. “메리, 여인들을 모아서 그들과 함께 울어요.” 그는 아내의 고통이 고통 중에 있는 다른 사람들과 특별한 나눔을 가질 수 있게 해주었음을 알고 있었습니다.

하나님의 가족인 교회는 좋은 것이든 좋지 않은 것이든 삶의 모든 것을 나눌 수 있는 곳입니다. 신약성경에서 “서로”라는 말은 상호 의존적인 우리의 관계를 표현하기 위해 사용되고 있습니다. “형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하며...... 서로 마음을 같이하며”(로마서 12:10,16). 우리가 어디까지 서로 연결되어야 하는지를 15절에서 말해줍니다. “즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라.”

우리의 고통의 깊이와 범위가 인종 집단학살을 겪은 고통에 비할 바가 못 되겠지만, 그럼에도 그 고통은 개인이 겪는 현실입니다. 메리가 겪은 고통의 경우처럼, 우리도 하나님이 우리에게 주신 고통이기에 그대로 받아들이고 그것으로 다른 사람들을 위로하며 그들의 유익을 위해 함께 나눌 수 있습니다.

In It Together

During a two-month period in 1994, as many as one million Tutsis were slain in Rwanda by Hutu tribe members bent on killing their fellow countrymen. In the wake of this horrific genocide, Bishop Geoffrey Rwubusisi approached his wife about reaching out to women whose loved ones had been slain. Mary’s reply was, “All I want to do is cry.” She too had lost members of her family. The bishop’s response was that of a wise leader and caring husband: “Mary, gather the women together and cry with them.” He knew his wife’s pain had prepared her to uniquely share in the pain of others.

The church, the family of God, is where all of life can be shared—the good and not-so-good. The New Testament words “one another” are used to capture our interdependence. “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. . . . Live in harmony with one another” (ROMANS 12:10, 16). The extent of our connectedness is expressed in verse 15: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

While the depth and scope of our pain may pale in comparison with those affected by genocide, it’s nonetheless personal and real. And, as with the pain of Mary, because of what God has done for us it can be embraced and shared for the comfort and good of others. ARTHUR JACKSON

젊은 아빠가 곤경에 빠졌습니다. 그의 어린 아들이 “아이스크림! 아이스크림!” 하면서 소리 지르고 있었습니다. 사람들이 붐비는 쇼핑몰 한 가운데에서 아이가 마구 떼를 쓰자 인근의 쇼핑객들이 주목하기 시작했습니다. “좋아. 근데 엄마를 위해 먼저 해야 할 일이 있어, 알았지?”라고 아이 아빠가 말했습니다. “아니야아아! 아이스크림!” 그때 신발과 가방이 어울리게 잘 차려 입은 자그마한 여성이 그들에게 다가왔습니다. 아이 아빠는 “아이가 떼를 많이 쓰네요.” 하자 그 여인이 미소 지으며 말했습니다. “사실, 떼가 아이를 쓰는 것 같아요. 애가 아주 어리다는 것을 잊지 마세요. 아이에게는 당신의 인내심이 필요해요. 가까이 있어주세요.” 상황이 마법처럼 해결되지는 않았지만 이 여인의 등장은 그 순간에 아버지와 아들에게 필요했던 일시 정지와도 같았습니다.

그 현명한 여성의 말은 시편 103편의 말씀을 생각나게 해줍니다. 다윗은 우리 하나님에 대해 “긍휼이 많으시고 은혜로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시고 인자하심이 풍부하시도다”(8절)라고 쓰고 있습니다. 그는 또 “자식을 긍휼을 여기는” 세상의 아버지의 모습을 그리면서, 그보다도 더 “여호와께서는 자기를 경외하는 자를 긍휼히 여기신다”(13절)고 말합니다. 하나님 우리 아버지는 “우리의 체질을 아시며 우리가 단지 먼지뿐임을 기억하십니다”(14절). 하나님은 우리가 먼지처럼 작고 연약한 존재라는 것을 알고 계십니다.

우리는 가끔 실패하고 이 큰 세상이 우리에게 안겨주는 것에 압도당해 어쩔 줄 몰라 합니다. 그러나 인내심을 가지고 우리와 늘 함께 하시는 하나님 아버지의 풍성한 사랑을 알게 되니 얼마나 놀라운 확신이 되는지요.

We Are Dust

The young father was at the end of his rope. “Ice cream! Ice cream!” his toddler screamed. The meltdown in the middle of the crowded mall began drawing the attention of shoppers nearby. “Fine, but we just need to do something for mommy first, okay?” the father said. “Nooooo! Ice cream!” And then she approached them: a small, well-dressed woman with shoes that matched her handbag. “He’s having a big fit,” the father said. The woman smiled and responded, “Actually, it looks like a big fit is having your little boy. Don’t forget he’s so small. He needs you to be patient and stay close.” The situation didn’t magically resolve itself, but it was just the kind of pause the father and son needed in the moment.

Echoes of the wise woman’s words are heard in Psalm 103. David writes of our God who is “compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love” (V. 8). He then continues by invoking the image of an earthly father who “has compassion on his children,” and even more so “the Lord has compassion on those who fear him” (V. 13). God our Father “knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust” (V. 14). He knows we’re small and fragile.

We often fail and are overwhelmed by what this big world hands us. What an amazing assurance to know of our Father’s patient, ever-present, abounding love. JOHN BLASE

찬양을 올려드림

지도의 중심이 어디인지를 보면 대개 그 지도가 어디서 그려졌는지를 알 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리 집이 세상의 중심인 양 생각하는 경향이 있어서, 그 가운데 점을 찍고 거기서부터 그려 나갑니다. 가까운 마을은 북쪽으로 오십 마일, 혹은 남쪽으로 차로 반나절 거리라고 하듯이, 모든 것을 우리가 있는 위치와 연관시켜 표현합니다. 시편은 구약에 묘사된 이 땅의 하나님의 집으로부터 “지도”를 그립니다. 그래서 성경의 지리적 중심은 예루살렘입니다.

Raise Praise

You can generally tell where a map was drawn by what lies in its middle. We tend to think our home is the center of the world, so we put a dot in the middle and sketch out from there. Nearby towns might be fifty miles to the north or half a day’s drive to the south, but all are described in relation to where we are. The Psalms draw their “map” from God’s earthly home in the Old Testament, so the center of biblical geography is Jerusalem.

Psalm 48 is one of many psalms that praise Jerusalem. This “city of our God, his holy mountain” is “beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth” (VV. 1–2). Because “God is in her citadels,” He “makes her secure forever” (VV. 3, 8). God’s fame begins in Jerusalem’s temple and spreads outward to “the ends of the earth” (VV. 9–10).

Unless you’re reading this in Jerusalem, your home is not in the center of the biblical world. Yet your region matters immensely, because God will not rest until His praise reaches “to the ends of the earth” (V. 10). Would you like to be part of the way God reaches His goal? Worship each week with God’s people, and openly live each day for His glory. God’s fame extends “to the ends of the earth” when we devote all that we are and have to Him. MIKE WITTMER

무엇을 하느냐가 중요한가?

나는 고개를 숙인 채 머리를 감싸 쥐고, “이걸 다 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠어.”라며 한숨을 쉬었습니다. 그러자 친구의 목소리가 전화기 너머로 들려왔습니다. “너도 네 자신을 어느 정도 인정해 줘야 해. 넌 많은 일을 하고 있어.” 그러면서 친구는 건강한 생활습관을 유지하고, 일을 하며, 대학원에서 좋은 성적을 얻고, 글을 쓰고, 성경공부에 참석하는 등, 내가 애쓰며 하고 있는 일들을 쭉 나열했습니다. 나는 하나님을 위해 이 모든 일을 하고 싶었습니다. 하지만 나는 어떻게 하고 있느냐 대신 무엇을 하고 있느냐에 더 집중하고 있었습니다. 어쩌면 지나치게 많은 일을 하려고 애쓰고 있었는지도 모릅니다.

바울은 골로새교회 성도들에게 하나님의 영광을 위해 살아야 한다고 상기시켜 주었습니다. 궁극적으로 그들이 매일 매일의 삶 속에서 구체적으로 무엇을 했는가는 그 일을 ‘어떻게’ 했는가 만큼 중요하지 않았습니다. 그들은 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음”(골로새서 3:12)으로 서로 용서하고 무엇보다 사랑하며(13-14절) “무엇을 하든지......주 예수의 이름으로”(17절) 해야 했습니다. 그들의 일은 그리스도를 닮은 삶에서 벗어나서는 안 되었던 것입니다.

우리가 무엇을 하느냐가 중요하긴 하지만, ‘어떻게’, ‘왜’, 그리고 ‘누구’를 위해 하느냐가 더 중요합니다. 매일 우리는 스트레스를 받으며 일할지, 아니면 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 예수님께서 우리 일에 주신 의미를 찾으며 일할지 선택할 수 있습니다. 우리는 후자를 추구할 때 만족을 얻을 수 있습니다.

Does What We Do Matter?

I dropped my forehead to my hand with a sigh, “I don’t know how I’m going to get it all done.” My friend’s voice crackled through the phone: “You have to give yourself some credit. You’re doing a lot.” He then listed the things I was trying to do—maintain a healthy lifestyle, work, do well in graduate school, write, and attend a Bible study. I wanted to do all these things for God, but instead I was more focused on what I was doing than how I was doing it—or that perhaps I was trying to do too much.

Paul reminded the church in Colossae that they were to live in a way that glorified God. Ultimately, what they specifically did on a day-to-day basis was not as important as how they did it. They were to do their work with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COLOSSIANS 3:12), to be forgiving, and above all to love (VV. 13–14) and to “do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (V. 17). Their work wasn’t to be separated from Christlike living.

What we do matters, but how we do it, why, and who we do it for matters more. Each day we can choose to work in a stressed-out way or in a way that honors God and seeks out the meaning Jesus adds to our work. When we pursue the latter, we find satisfaction. JULIE SCHWAB

머어시의 비탄

그녀의 아버지는 자신의 질병을 마법에 걸린 탓이라고 했지만, 그것은 사실 에이즈였습니다. 아버지가 죽었을 때 열 살이었던 딸 머어시는 엄마와 더욱 가까워지면서 자랐습니다. 그런데 엄마마저 병에 걸려 3년 후 죽고 말았습니다. 그때부터 언니가 다섯 명의 형제자매를 키웠는데, 머어시가 그녀의 깊은 고통을 일기에 기록하기 시작한 것도 바로 그때였습니다.

예레미야 선지자도 그의 고통을 기록했습니다. 암울한 책인 애가서에서 그는 바빌론 군대가 유다 백성에게 행한 잔혹 행위를 적었습니다. 예레미야는 나이 어린 희생자들에 특히 가슴 아파하여 이렇게 울부짖었습니다. “내 간이 땅에 쏟아졌으니 이는 딸 내 백성이 패망하여 어린 자녀와 젖 먹는 아이들이 성읍 길거리에 기절함이로다”(2:11). 유다 백성들이 하나님을 거역한 일 때문에 그 자녀들도 대가를 치루었던 것입니다. “아이들이 어머니의 품에서 숨져 간다”(12절, 새번역) 고 예레미야는 기록했습니다.

그 같은 고통을 목격하면서 예레미야가 하나님을 원망할 만도 한데, 그는 오히려 살아남은 자들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “네 마음을 주의 얼굴 앞에 물 쏟듯 할지어다...... ‘네 어린 자녀들의 생명’을 위하여 주를 향하여 손을 들지어다”(19절).

머어시나 예레미야가 한 것처럼 우리의 마음을 하나님께 쏟아놓는 것은 잘 하는 일입니다. 비탄은 인간 됨의 아주 중요한 부분입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 그 같은 고통을 허락하실 때조차 우리와 함께 슬퍼하십니다. 우리가 하나님의 형상으로 만들어졌기에 하나님도 틀림없이 비탄해하십니다!

Mercy’s Lament

Her father blamed his illness on witchcraft. It was AIDS. When he died, his daughter, ten-year-old Mercy, grew even closer to her mother. But her mother was sick too, and three years later she died. From then on, Mercy’s sister raised the five siblings. That’s when Mercy began to keep a journal of her deep pain.

The prophet Jeremiah kept a record of his pain too. In the grim book of Lamentations, he wrote of atrocities done to Judah by the Babylonian army. Jeremiah’s heart was especially grieved for the youngest victims. “My heart is poured out on the ground,” he cried, “because my people are destroyed, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city” (2:11). The people of Judah had a history of ignoring God, but their children were paying the price too. “Their lives ebb away in their mothers’ arms,” wrote Jeremiah (V. 12).

We might have expected Jeremiah to reject God in the face of such suffering. Instead, he urged the survivors, “Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children” (V. 19).

It’s good, as Mercy and Jeremiah did, to pour out our hearts to God. Lament is a crucial part of being human. Even when God permits such pain, He grieves with us. Made as we are in His image, He must lament too! TIM GUSTAFSON

궤도를 벗어나지 않는 방법

미국 장애올림픽 팀의 일원인 데이비드 브라운은 세계에서 가장 빠른 맹인 달리기 선수입니다. 그는 자신의 승리가 하나님과, 어려서부터 “앉아서 지내지 말라”고 충고해 주신 어머니, 그리고 노련한 단거리 주자로서 그와 함께 뛰며 이끌어준 제롬 에이버리 덕분이라고 말합니다. 에이버리는 끈으로 브라운과 자신의 손가락을 묶고 접촉을 통해 또 말로 그가 경주에서 이기도록 이끌어주었습니다.

브라운은 커브가 있는 200 미터 경주로에서 자칫하면 “크게 벗어나 돌” 수도 있었다고 하면서, “모든 것이 ‘그의’ 신호를 잘 듣는 데 달려 있다”고 말합니다. 그는 또 “우리는 말로 하는 신호뿐 아니라 몸으로 보내는 신호로 서로 의사소통을 하면서 매일매일 경주 전략을 거듭 검토한다”고 말합니다.

우리가 살아가는 인생의 경주에 있어서도 우리는 신성한 안내자의 축복을 받고 있습니다. 우리가 보혜사 성령님을 따를 때 그분이 우리의 발걸음을 인도해 주십니다. 요한은 이렇게 기록했습니다. “여러분을 속이려는 사람들에 대하여 내가 이것을 썼습니다. 여러분에게는 그리스도께서 부어 주신 성령이 있기 때문에 아무에게서도 가르침을 받을 필요가 없습니다. 성령께서 여러분에게 모든 것을 가르쳐 주십니다”(요한1서 2:26-27, 현대인의 성경).

요한은 하나님 아버지와 메시아 예수님을 부인하는 “적그리스도들”을 마주했던 그 당시의 그리스도인들에게 이 지혜를 강조했습니다(22절). 오늘날 우리도 이런 부인하는 자들을 마주칩니다. 그러나 우리의 인도자이신 성령님께서 우리가 예수님을 잘 따르도록 이끌어 주십니다. 우리가 성령님의 인도하심을 믿으면 진리와 함께 하며 궤도에서 벗어나지 않을 수 있습니다.

How to Stay on Track

As the world’s fastest blind runner, David Brown of the U.S. Paralympic Team credits his wins to God, his mother’s early advice (“no sitting around”), and his running guide—veteran sprinter Jerome Avery. Tethered to Brown by a string tied to their fingers, Avery guides Brown’s winning races with words and touches.

“It’s all about listening to his cues,” says Brown, who says he could “swing out wide” on 200-meter races where the track curves. “Day in and day out, we’re going over race strategies,” Brown says, “communicating with each other—not only verbal cues, but physical cues.”

In our own life’s race, we’re blessed with a Divine Guide. Our Helper, the Holy Spirit, leads our steps when we follow Him. “I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray,” wrote John (1 JOHN 2:26). “But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know” (V. 27 NLT).

John stressed this wisdom to the believers of his day who faced “antichrists” who denied the Father and that Jesus is the Messiah (V. 22). We face such deniers today as well. But the Holy Spirit, our Guide, leads us in following Jesus. We can trust His guidance to touch us with truth, keeping us on track. PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님만큼 큰 사랑

나는 도미니카 공화국의 산토 도밍고라는 가난한 동네를 방문한 적이 있습니다. 집들은 주름진 철판으로 만들어졌고, 그 위로 전기가 통하는 전선들이 매달려 있었습니다. 거기서 나는 가족들을 면담하며 교회가 어떻게 실업과 마약, 범죄와 싸우는 것을 돕고 있는지 들을 수 있는 특별한 시간을 가질 수 있었습니다.

한 골목길에서 나는 한 엄마와 아들을 면담하기 위해 위태위태한 사다리를 타고 올라갔습니다. 그러나 곧 어떤 사람이 서둘러 올라와서는 “빨리 떠나야 한다”고 말했습니다. 커다란 칼을 쓰는 갱 두목이 우리를 습격하려고 폭도들을 모으고 있었던 것입니다.

우리는 두 번째 마을을 방문했지만, 그곳에서는 아무런 문제가 없었습니다. 나중에 나는 왜 그런지 알게 되었습니다. 우리가 매번 집을 방문할 때마다, 한 갱단의 두목이 밖에 서서 우리를 지켜주고 있었던 것입니다. 알고 보니 그의 딸이 교회에서 음식과 교육을 제공받고 있었는데, 교회의 성도들이 딸의 편이 되어주었기에 그도 우리의 편이 되어준 것입니다.

산상수훈에서 예수님은 비교할 수 없는 사랑의 기준을 제시 하십니다. 그런 사랑은 ‘사랑받을 만한’ 사람뿐만 아니라 그럴 가치가 없는 사람들과(마태복음 5:43-45), 가족과 친구를 넘어서 사랑을 돌려줄 수도 없고 돌려주지도 않을 사람들까지(46-47절) 품어주는 사랑입니다. 이것이 하나님만큼 큰 사랑이며(48절) 모든 이들을 축복하는 사랑입니다.

산토 도밍고의 성도들이 이런 사랑을 삶으로 나누면서 이웃들이 바뀌기 시작했습니다. 그런 사랑으로 말미암아 굳은 마음들이 녹아내리고 있습니다. 하나님만큼 큰 사랑이 도시에 나타날 때 바로 그런 일들이 일어납니다.

God-Sized Love

I once visited an impoverished neighborhood of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Homes were made of corrugated iron, with electrical wires dangling live above them. There I had the privilege of interviewing families and hearing how churches were helping to combat unemployment, drug use, and crime.

In one alleyway I climbed a rickety ladder to a small room to interview a mother and her son. But just a moment later someone rushed up, saying, “We must leave now.” A machete-wielding gang leader was apparently gathering a mob to ambush us.

We visited a second neighborhood, but there we had no problem. Later I discovered why. As I visited each home, a gang leader stood outside guarding us. It turned out his daughter was being fed and educated by the church, and because believers were standing by her, he stood by us.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents a standard of love that’s beyond comparison. This kind of love embraces not just the “worthy” but the undeserving (MATTHEW 5:43–45), reaching beyond family and friends to touch those who can’t or won’t love us back (VV. 46–47). This is God-sized love (V. 48)—the kind that blesses everyone.

As believers in Santo Domingo live out this love, neighborhoods are starting to change. Tough hearts are warming to their cause. That’s what happens when God-sized love comes

신성하다고 불린 불

몇 년 간 가물다가 캘리포니아 남부에서 산불이 많이 발생하자 어떤 주민들은 하나님이 이 산불을 일으킨 것이라고 생각하였습니다. 이런 그릇된 생각은 뉴스 매체에서 이 산불을 ‘신성한 불’이라 부르기 시작하면서 더 강해졌습니다. 이 지역을 잘 모르는 사람들은 이 말이 ‘신성한 짐의 계곡’이라는 곳의 이름을 따서 말한 것임을 알지 못했습니다. ‘신성한 짐’은 누구일까요? 이 지역에 전해오는 이야기에 의하면, 그는 19세기의 양봉업자로 지독히도 반종교적이고 심술궂은 사람이어서 이웃들이 그를 비꼬아 그런 별명을 붙였다고 합니다.

세례 요한이 말한 “성령과 불”의 세례도 나름의 이야기와 설명이 있습니다 (누가복음 3:16). 돌이켜 보면, 그는 말라기 선지자가 보았던 연단하는 불과 같은 메시아의 모습(말라기 3:1-3; 4:1)을 생각하고 있었던 것 같습니다. 그렇지만 하나님의 성령이 예수님의 제자들에게 바람과 불과 같이 오신 후에야 비로소 말라기와 세례 요한의 말의 의미가 뚜렷이 드러났습니다(사도행전 2:1-4).

세례 요한이 예언했던 불은 기대했던 것과는 달랐습니다. 하나님이 실제로 일으키신 그 불은 사람들의 생각과는 다른 모습의 메시아와 신성한 불꽃으로 담대하게 선포하며 나타났습니다. 예수님의 영 안에서 그 불은 우리 인간들의 헛된 노력을 드러내 태워버리고, 거기에 사랑과 희락, 화평, 오래 참음, 자비, 양선, 충성, 온유, 절제를 위한 공간을 마련해주었습니다(갈라디아 5:22-23 참조). 바로 그것이 우리 안에서 역사하시려는 하나님의 행동들입니다.

A Fire Called Holy

After several years of drought, the wildfires of Southern California left some residents thinking of them as acts of God. This disturbing impression was reinforced when news sources began referring to one as the Holy Fire. Many unfamiliar with the area didn’t realize it was a reference to the Holy Jim Canyon region. But who was Holy Jim? According to local history, he was a nineteenthcentury beekeeper so irreligious and cantankerous that neighbors tagged him with that ironic nickname.

John the Baptist’s reference to a baptism of “the Holy Spirit and fire” also came with its own story and explanation (LUKE 3:16). Looking back, he was likely thinking of the kind of Messiah and refining fire foreseen by the prophet Malachi (3:1–3; 4:1). But only after the Spirit of God came like wind and fire on the followers of Jesus did the words of Malachi and John come into focus (ACTS 2:1–4).

The fire John predicted wasn’t what was expected. As a true act of God, it came with boldness to proclaim a different kind of Messiah and holy flame. In the Spirit of Jesus, it exposed and consumed our futile human efforts—while making room for the love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control of the Holy Spirit (SEE GALATIANS 5:22–23).
