거북이와 함께 기다림

매년 가을이 되면 비단거북이는 겨울이 오는 것을 알고 연못 바닥으로 잠수하여 오물과 진흙 속에 자신을 파묻습니다. 자신의 몸을 껍질 안으로 집어넣고는 꼼짝도 안하면서 심장 박동은 느려지고 거의 정지합니다. 체온도 떨어져서 겨우 얼지 않을 정도만 유지하면서 호흡을 멈추고 기다립니다. 거북이는 6개월 동안 파묻혀 있으면서 뼈에 있는 칼슘을 혈액으로 방출시키기 때문에 몸의 형태마저 서서히 잃어가기 시작합니다.

그러나 연못이 녹으면 거북이는 떠 올라와서 다시 숨을 쉬기 시작합니다. 그리고 뼈가 다시 형성되고 껍질 위로 햇볕의 따스함도 느끼게 됩니다.

나는 시편 기자가 하나님을 기다리는 모습을 기록한 것을 읽으면서 비단거북이 를 생각해 봅니다. 시편 기자가 “웅덩이”와 “수렁”에 있을 때에도 하나님은 그의 부르짖음을 들으시고(시편 40:2), 그를 끌어올리셔서 견고한 곳에 서게 하십니다. 하나님은 “나의 도움이시요 건지시는 이시라”고 그는 찬양합니다(17절).

직업을 바꾸어 새로운 일을 시작하기 위해서나 관계 회복을 위해서, 나쁜 습관을 끊을 의지력을 위해, 아니면 어려운 상황을 벗어나기 위해 무언가 변화가 있기를 기다린 것이 너무 오래된 것처럼 느껴질 지도 모르겠습니다. 여기 비단거북이와 시편 기자는 들으시고 구원해주시는 하나님을 신뢰하라고 우리에게 상기시켜줍니다.

Waiting with the Turtle

Every fall, when the painted turtle senses winter coming, she dives to the bottom of her pond, burying herself in the muck and mud. She pulls into her shell and goes still: her heart rate slows, almost stopping. Her body temperature drops, staying just above freezing. She stops breathing, and she waits. For six months, she stays buried, and her body releases calcium from her bones into her bloodstream, so that she slowly begins even to lose her shape.

But when the pond thaws, she will float up and breathe again. Her bones will reform, and she will feel the warmth of the sun on her shell.

I think of the painted turtle when I read the psalmist’s description of waiting for God. The psalmist is in a “slimy pit” of “mud and mire,” but God hears him (PSALM 40:2). God lifts him out, and gives him a firm place to stand. God is “my help and my deliverer,” he sings (V. 17).

Perhaps it feels like you’ve been waiting forever for something to change—for a new direction in your career, for a relationship to be restored, for the willpower to break a bad habit, or for deliverance from a difficult situation. The painted turtle and the psalmist are here to remind us to trust in God: He hears, and He will deliver. - AMY PETERSON

은혜를 증거함

얼마 전 상을 당한 사람이 말했습니다. “비극이 발생하거나 상처를 입었을 때 두 가지의 선택이 있습니다. 은혜를 증거하거나 복수하는 것입니다. 저는 은혜를 증거하기로 선택했습니다.” 지친 몸으로 졸음운전을 하며 집으로 가던 소방관이 낸 교통사고로 에릭 피츠제럴드 목사의 아내가 목숨을 잃었습니다. 검사는 최고형을 원하는지 목사에게 물었지만 그는 평소에 자주 설교하던 용서를 실천하기로 했습니다. 그러자 목사와 소방관 둘 다 예상치 못했던 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 두 사람이 나중에 친구가 된 것입니다.

에릭 목사는 자신의 모든 죄를 용서해 주신 하나님께 받은 은혜대로 살았습니다. 그는 죄를 사하시고 우리의 잘못을 용서 하신 하나님을 찬양했던 미가 선지자의 말씀을(미가 7:18) 자신의 행동으로 그대로 보여주었습니다. 미가 선지자는 시각적인 언어를 훌륭하게 사용하여 “우리의 죄악을 발로 밟으시고 우리의 모든 죄를 깊은 바다에 던지시리이다”(19절) 라고 말하면서 하나님께서 자기 백성을 얼마만큼 용서하셨는지를 보여주었습니다. 그 소방관은 그날 자유라는 선물을 받고 하나님께 더 가까이 가게 되었던 것입니다.

우리가 어떤 어려움을 만나도 하나님께서 사랑으로 활짝 편 팔로 다가오셔서 우리를 그분의 안전한 품으로 맞아주신다는 것을 압니다. 하나님은 “한결같은 사랑을 보이시기를 기뻐하십니다” (18절, 현대인의 성경). 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 받으면 우리에게 상처준 이들을 용서할 힘이 생깁니다. 에릭 목사처럼 말입니다.

Demonstrating Grace

“In moments where tragedy happens or even hurt, there are opportunities to demonstrate grace or to exact vengeance,” the recently bereaved man remarked. “I chose to demonstrate grace.” Pastor Erik Fitzgerald’s wife had been killed in a car accident caused by an exhausted firefighter who fell asleep while driving home, and legal prosecutors wanted to know whether he would seek the maximum sentence. The pastor chose to practice the forgiveness he often preached about. To the surprise of both him and the firefighter, the men eventually became friends.

Pastor Erik was living out of the grace he’d received from God, who’d forgiven him all of his sins. Through his actions he echoed the words of the prophet Micah, who praised God for pardoning sin and forgiving when we do wrong (MICAH 7:18). The prophet uses wonderfully visual language to show just how far God goes in forgiving His people, saying that He will “tread our sins underfoot” and hurl our wrongdoings into the deep sea (V. 19). The firefighter received a gift of freedom that day, which brought him closer to God.

Whatever difficulty we face, we know that God reaches out to us with loving, open arms, welcoming us into His safe embrace. He “delights to show mercy” (V. 18). As we receive His love and grace, He gives us the strength to forgive those who hurt us—even as Pastor Erik did. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

어디로 향하고 있습니까?

태국 북부 지역에서 유소년 축구팀 와일드 보어스가 동굴 탐사에 나섰다가 한 시간 후 다시 밖으로 나가려 하는데 동굴 입구가 물에 차있었습니다. 차오르는 물로 그들은 점점 동굴 안쪽으로 밀려 들어가 결국 입구에서 2마일 이상(4킬로미터) 떨어진 곳에 갇히게 되었습니다. 2주후 기적적으로 구조되었을때 사람들은 그들이 어떻게 절망적으로 그렇게까지 갇히게 되었는지 궁금해 했습니다. 그것은 매번 한 걸음씩 물러난 결과였습니다.

이스라엘에서 나단은 충직한 군인 우리아를 죽인 다윗에 정면으로 맞섰 습니다. 어떻게 “[하나님의] 마음에 맞는 사람”(사무엘상 13:14)이 살인이라는 죄를 저지르게 되었을까요? ‘매번 한걸음씩’ 진행된 결과였습니다. 다윗은 어느 날 오후에 갑자기 살인을 한 것이 아닙니다. 하나의 잘못된 선택이 또 다른 잘못된 선택을 가져오면서 죄를 점점 키운 것입니다. 그것은 한 번 더 주었던 눈길이 욕정의 시선으로 바뀌며 시작되었습니다. 다윗은 자신의 왕권을 남용하여 밧세바를 데려오게 했고 그의 남편 우리아를 최전방에서 불러 그녀의 임신을 감추려 했습니다. 그러나 우리아가 전쟁 중에 있는 전우들을 생각하며 밧세바와 동침하지 않자 다윗은 그를 죽일 결심을 하게 되었습니다.

Where Are You Headed?

In northern Thailand, the Wild Boars youth soccer team decided to explore a cave together. After an hour they turned to go back and found that the entrance to the cave was flooded. Rising water pushed them deeper into the cave, day after day, until they were finally trapped more than two miles (four kilometers) inside. When they were heroically rescued two weeks later, many wondered how they had become so hopelessly trapped. Answer: one step at a time.

In Israel, Nathan confronted David for killing his loyal soldier, Uriah. How did the man “after [God’s] own heart” (1 SAMUEL 13:14) become guilty of murder? One step at a time. David didn’t go from zero to murder in one afternoon. He warmed up to it, over time, as one bad decision bled into others. It started with a second glance that turned into a lustful stare. He abused his kingly power by sending for Bathsheba, then tried to cover up her pregnancy by calling her husband home from the front. When Uriah refused to visit his wife while his comrades were at war, David decided he would have to die.

We may not be guilty of murder or trapped in a cave of our own making, but we’re either moving toward Jesus or toward trouble. Big problems don’t develop overnight. They break upon us gradually, one step at a time. - MIKE WITTMER

깨끗한 그릇

“미움은 그것을 품고 있는 사람을 상하게 한다.” 이 말은 전 상원의원 앨런 심슨이 조지 H.W. 부시 전 대통령의 장례식에서 한 말입니다. 그의 사랑하는 친구의 다정했던 모습을 설명하면서 심슨 상원의원은 미국 41대 대통령이 자신의 직책을 수행하는 리더십과 개인적인 관계에서 미움보다는 유머와 사랑을 품은 사람이었다고 회고 하였습니다.

나는 그 상원의원이 한 말에 동의 합니다. 당신은 그렇지 않습니까? 증오심을 오래 품을 때 망가지는 사람은 바로 ‘나’ 였습니다!

의학 연구를 통해서도 우리가 부정적인 감정에 매달리거나 화를 표출할 때 몸이 상한다고 밝혀졌습니다. 혈압이 올라가고 심장 박동이 빨라지고 기력을 잃습니다. 미움을 품은 우리가 상하는 것입니다.

잠언 10장 12절에서 솔로몬 왕은 “미움은 다툼을 일으켜도 사랑은 모든 허물을 가린다”고 말합니다. 여기서 미움으로 비롯된 갈등은 대적하는 다른 부족들과 인종 간 피 흘림으로 이어집니다. 그 같은 증오는 복수심에 부채질하여 서로 경멸하는 사이가 되어 단절되게 만듭니다.

이와는 대조적으로 하나님의 사랑의 방식은 모든 잘못을 덮어줍니다. 베일로 덮고 감추고 용서합니다. 그것은 잘못을 못 본체 넘기거나 잘못한 사람을 두둔하는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 그것은 어떤 사람이 진심으로 자신의 죄를 후회하고 있다면 그 잘못을 마음에 담아두지 않는다는 것입니다. 설령 사과를 하지 않더라도 우리의 감정을 여전히 하나님께 내어놓는 것입니다. 위대한 사랑의 하나님을 알고 있는 우리는 이렇게 사랑해야 합니다. “무엇보다도 먼저 서로 뜨겁게 사랑하십시오. 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮어 줍니다” (베드로전서 4:8, 새번역).

Clean Containers

“Hatred corrodes the container that carries it.” These words were spoken by former Senator Alan Simpson at the funeral of George H. W. Bush. Attempting to describe his dear friend’s kindness, Senator Simpson recalled how the forty-first president of the United States embraced humor and love rather than hatred in his professional leadership and personal relationships.

I relate to the senator’s quote, don’t you? Oh, the damage done to me when I harbor hatred!

Medical research reveals the damage done to our bodies when we cling to the negative or release bursts of anger. Our blood pressure rises. Our hearts pound. Our spirits sag. Our containers corrode.

In Proverbs 10:12, King Solomon observes, “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.” The conflict that results from hatred here is a blood feud between rivaling peoples of different tribes and races. Such hatred fuels the drive for revenge so that people who despise each other can’t connect.

By contrast, God’s way of love covers—draws a veil over, conceals, or forgives—all wrongs. That doesn’t mean we overlook errors or enable a wrongdoer. But we don’t nurse the wrong when someone is truly remorseful. And if they never apologize, we still release our feelings to God. We who know the Great Lover are to “love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins” (1 PETER 4:8). - ELISA MORGAN

하나님이 간섭하실 때

오 목사라는 애칭으로 알려진 오마우미 에푸예는 ‘사랑받는 이 아이’라는 시에서 그를 임신했을 때 지우려 했던 부모에 대해 쓰고 있습니다. 그의 부모는 몇 번의 우여곡절 끝에 낙태를 할 수 없게 되자 아이를 낳아 잘 키우기로 하였습니다. 하나님께서 그의 생명을 지켜주셨던 사실을 알게 된 오마우미는 돈을 많이 벌 수 있는 직업을 포기하고 전임 사역자의 길을 택했습니다. 오늘날 그는 런던의 한 교회에서 신실하게 목회를 하고 있습니다.

오 목사처럼 이스라엘 백성들에게도 그들의 역사에서 위험한 때에 하나님의 간섭하심이 있었습니다. 그들이 광야를 지날 때 모압의 왕 발락이 그들을 보았습니다. 발락은 이스라엘 백성들이 많은 나라를 정복한 것과 그들의 숫자가 많음을 보고 두려워하여 점술가 발람으로 하여금 아무것도 모르고 지나가는 그들에게 저주를 내리도록 하였습니다(민수기 22:2-6).

그런데 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 발람이 저주하려고 입을 열 때마다 축복이 나왔습니다. 그는 이렇게 선언했습니다. “내가 축복할 것을 받았으니 그가 주신 복을 내가 돌이키지 않으리라 야곱의 허물을 보지 아니하시며 이스라엘의 반역을 보지 아니하시는도다 여호와 그들의 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시니......하나님이 그들을 애굽에서 인도하여 내셨도다”(민수기 23:20-22). 하나님은 눈앞에 닥친 전쟁을 알지도 못했던 이스라엘 백성들을 지켜주셨습니다!

우리가 알든지 모르든지 하나님은 오늘도 그의 백성들을 지켜보고 계십니다. 우리를 축복하시는 그분을 감사와 경외의 마음으로 경배하는 우리가 되기를 소원합니다.

When God Intervenes

In a poem titled “This Child Is Beloved,” Omawumi Efueye, known affectionately as Pastor O, writes about his parents’ attempts to end the pregnancy that would result in his birth. After several unusual events that prevented them from aborting him, they decided to welcome their child instead. The knowledge of God’s preservation of his life motivated Omawumi to give up a lucrative career in favor of full-time ministry. Today, he faithfully pastors a London church.

Like Pastor O, the Israelites experienced God’s intervention at a vulnerable time in their history. While traveling through the wilderness, they came within sight of King Balak of Moab. Terrified of their conquests and their vast population, Balak engaged a seer named Balaam to place a curse on the unsuspecting travelers (NUMBERS 22:2–6).

But something amazing happened. Whenever Balaam opened his mouth to curse, a blessing issued instead. “I have received a command to bless; he has blessed, and I cannot change it,” he declared. “No misfortune is seen in Jacob, no misery observed in Israel. The Lord their God is with them; . . . God brought them out of Egypt” (NUMBERS 23:20–22). God preserved the Israelites from a battle they didn’t even know was raging!

Whether we see it or not, God still watches over His people today. May we worship in gratitude and awe the One who calls us blessed. - REMI OYEDELE

복수 대신에

1956년에 짐 엘리엇과 다른 네 명의 선교사가 후아오라니 부족에게 살해당했을 때, 그 후에 일어날 일을 예상한 사람은 아무도 없었습니다. 짐의 아내 엘리자벳과 그의 어린 딸, 그리고 다른 선교사의 여동생이 그들의 사랑하는 사람들을 죽인 그 부족 가운데 들어가 살기로 하고, 몇 년 간을 후아오라니 부족과 살면서 그들의 언어를 배우고 그들을 위해 성경을 번역했습니다. 이 여인들이 용서와 친절을 몸소 보여줌으로써 후아오라니 사람들은 그들을 향한 하나님의 사랑을 확신하게 되었고 많은 이들이 예수님을 그들의 구주로 영접했습니다.

왜 이렇게 해야 할까요? 바울은 구약성경의 잠언을 인용해 말합니다. “네 원수가 주리거든 먹이고 목마르거든 마시게 하라” (20절; 잠언 25:21-22). 바울 사도는 믿는 사람이 친절을 베풂으로 적을 이길 수 있고 적의 가슴 속에 회개의 불을 당길 수 있다는 것을 말하고 있는 것입니다.

Instead of Revenge

After Jim Elliot and four other missionaries were killed by Huaorani tribesmen in 1956, no one expected what happened next. Jim’s wife, Elisabeth, their young daughter, and another missionary’s sister willingly chose to make their home among the very people who killed their loved ones. They spent several years living in the Huaorani community, learning their language, and translating the Bible for them. These women’s testimony of forgiveness and kindness convinced the Huaorani of God’s love for them and many received Jesus as their Savior.

What Elisabeth and her friend did is an incredible example of not repaying evil with evil but with good (ROMANS 12:17). The apostle Paul encouraged the church in Rome to show through their actions the transformation that God had brought into their own lives. What did Paul have in mind? They were to go beyond the natural desire to take revenge; instead, they were to show love to their enemies by meeting their needs, such as providing food or water.

Why do this? Paul quotes a proverb from the Old Testament: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink” (V. 20; PROVERBS 25:21–22). The apostle was revealing that the kindness shown by believers to their enemies could win them over and light the fire of repentance in their hearts. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

폭풍을 쫒는 사람들

워렌 훼이들리는 “토네이도를 쫒는다는 것은 종종 수천 평방 마일에 걸친 거대한 3차원 게임과 비슷하다.”고 말합니다. 사진작가이자 폭풍을 쫒아 다니는 그는 “소프트볼 크기의 우박으로부터 먼지폭풍과 느리게 움직이는 농기계까지 피하면서, 기상정보와 내비게이션을 모두 적절히 사용하여야 제 시간에 제 장소에 있을 수 있다.”고 덧붙여 말합니다.

훼이들리의 글은 손에 땀을 쥐고 심장을 빠르게 뛰게 합니다. 나는 폭풍을 쫒는 사람들의 순수한 용기와 과학을 추구하는 마음에는 감탄하지만, 치명적일 수 있는 기상현상의 한복판에 몸을 던지는 것은 싫습니다.

하지만 경험에 의하면 내가 인생의 폭풍을 쫓지 않아도 폭풍이 ‘나를’ 쫓아다니는 것 같습니다. 시편 107편에 묘사되어 있는 폭풍에 갇힌 선원들이 나의 경험을 잘 말해주고 있습니다. 그들은 자신들이 잘못 선택한 결과로 곤란을 당하고 있었지만 시편 기자는 이렇게 말합니다. “이에 그들이 그들의 고통 때문에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그가 그들의 고통에서 그들을 인도하여 내시고 광풍을 고요하게 하사 물결도 잔잔하게 하시는도다 그들이 평온함으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 중에”(시편 107:28-30).

인생의 폭풍이 우리 자신의 잘못으로 인해 생겼든 아니면 망가진 세상에 살다보니 생긴 것이든, 우리 하나님 아버지는 그보다 더 크십니다. 우리가 폭풍에 쫒길 때 하나님만이 그 폭풍을 잠재우시거나, 아니면 우리 안의 폭풍을 잠재우실 수 있습니다.

Storm Chasers

“Chasing tornadoes,” says Warren Faidley, “is often like a giant game of 3D-chess played out over thousands of square miles.” The photojournalist and storm-chaser adds: “Being in the right place at the right time is a symphony of forecasting and navigation while dodging everything from softball-sized hailstones to dust storms and slowmoving farm equipment.”

Faidley’s words make my palms sweat and heart beat faster. While admiring the raw courage and scientific hunger storm chasers display, I balk at throwing myself into the middle of potentially fatal weather events.

In my experience, however, I don’t have to chase storms in life—they seem to be chasing me. That experience is mirrored by Psalm 107 as it describes sailors trapped in a storm. They were being chased by the consequences of their wrong choices but the psalmist says, “They cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm” (PSALM 107:28–30).

Whether the storms of life are of our own making or the result of living in a broken world, our Father is greater. When we are being chased by storms, He alone is able to calm them— or to calm the storm within us. - BILL CROWDER

있는 것을 가져오라

“돌멩이 수프”는 다양한 형태로 전해지는 옛 이야기인데 한 굶주린 남자가 어떤 마을을 찾아가지만 마을 사람들 중 그에게 아주 적은 음식이라도 나누어주는 사람이 아무도 없었습니다. 그러자 그는 돌과 물을 솥에 넣고 끓였습니다. 호기심 많은 마을 사람들은 그가 “수프”를 젓기 시작하자 그를 지켜보았습니다. 마침내 한 사람이 감자 두 개를 가져와 수프에 넣었습니다. 또 다른 사람은 약간의 당근을 가져왔습니다. 한 사람은 양파를, 다른 사람은 보리를 한 움큼 넣었습니다. 한 농부는 우유를 제공했습니다. 마침내 “돌멩이 수프”는 맛있는 수프가 되었습니다.

이 이야기는 나눔의 가치를 보여주고 있는데, 우리가 가진 것 중에 사소하게 보이는 것까지도 함께 나누어야 한다는 사실 또한 상기시켜 줍니다. 요한복음 6:1-14에서 우리는 많은 군중 가운데 음식을 가져올 생각을 했던 유일한 사람으로 보이는 한 소년을 봅니다. 예수님의 제자들은 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리의 얼마 안 되는 소년의 점심으로 아무것도 할 수 없었습니다. 그러나 그것을 예수님께 내어드렸을 때 예수님은 그것을 불리셔서 수천 명의 배고픈 사람들을 먹이셨습니다!

나는 전에 누군가가 “여러분은 오천 명의 사람들을 먹일 필요가 없습니다. 그저 자기의 떡과 물고기를 가져오기만 하면 됩니다.”라고 하는 말을 들었습니다. 예수님께서 한 사람의 음식을 가지고 사람의 기대나 상상 이상으로 불어나게 하신 것처럼(11절), 주님은 우리가 드리는 노력과 재능, 섬김도 받아주실 것입니다. 주님은 단지 우리가 가진 것을 기꺼이 주님께로 가져오길 원하십니다.

Bring What You Have

“Stone Soup,” an old tale with many versions, tells of a starving man who comes to a village, but no one there can spare a crumb of food for him. He puts a stone and water in a pot over a fire. Intrigued, the villagers watch him as he begins to stir his “soup.” Eventually, one brings a couple of potatoes to add to the mix; another has a few carrots. One person adds an onion, another a handful of barley. A farmer donates some milk. Eventually, the “stone soup” becomes a tasty chowder.

That tale illustrates the value of sharing, but it also reminds us to bring what we have, even when it seems to be insignificant. In John 6:1–14 we read of a boy who appears to be the only person in a huge crowd who thought about bringing some food. Christ’s disciples had little use for the boy’s sparse lunch of five loaves and two fishes. But when it was surrendered, Jesus increased it and fed thousands of hungry people!

I once heard someone say, “You don’t have to feed the five thousand. You just have to bring your loaves and fishes.” Just as Jesus took one person’s meal and multiplied it far beyond anyone’s expectations or imagination (V. 11), He’ll accept our surrendered efforts, talents, and service. He just wants us to be willing to bring what we have to Him. - CINDY HESS KASPER

성령님과 동행하며

‘1만 시간’. 작가 말콤 글래드웰은 어느 한 분야에서 숙련이 되려면 1만 시간이 걸린다고 말합니다. 역사상 아무리 위대한 미술가나 음악가들도 뛰어난 선천적 재능만으로는 그들이 나중에 이루었던 그런 수준의 전문성에는 이를 수 없었습니다. 그들은 하루도 빠짐없이 자신들의 일에 몰두해야 했습니다.

이상하게 생각될 수도 있지만, 성령의 능력 안에 사는 것을 배울 때에도 이와 비슷한 사고방식이 필요합니다. 바울은 갈라디아서에서 교회가 하나님을 위해 구별될 것을 권면합니다. 그러나 이것은 단지 율법에 순종하는 것만으로는 이룰 수 없다고 말합니다. 우리는 성령님과 동행하도록 부름 받았습니다. 바울이 갈라디아서 5장 16절에서 사용한 “행하다” 라는 헬라어 단어를 직역하면 어딘가를 두루 걷거나 여행하는 것을 의미합니다(페리파테오). 바울에게는 성령님과 동행한다는 것은 단지 성령의 능력을 한 번 경험하고 마는 것이 아니라 날마다 성령님과 삶의 여정을 함께 하는 것을 의미했습니다.

매일 성령으로 충만하기를 기도합시다. 그리고 성령님이 권고하시고 인도하시며 위로하실 때에, 그리고 우리와 그저 함께 계실 때에도 성령의 역사에 순종하도록 기도합시다. 그리고 이와 같이 “성령의 인도하시는 바가 되면”(18절) 우리는 성령의 음성을 더 잘 듣고, 그분의 인도하심을 더 잘 따를 수 있게 됩니다. 성령님, 오늘, 그리고 매일 성령님과 동행하게 하소서!

Walking with the Spirit

Ten thousand hours. That’s how long author Malcolm Gladwell suggests it takes to become skillful at any craft. Even for the greatest artists and musicians of all time, their tremendous inborn talent wasn’t enough to achieve the level of expertise that they would eventually attain. They needed to immerse themselves in their craft every single day.

As strange as it might seem, we need a similar mentality when it comes to learning to live in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Galatians, Paul encourages the church to be set apart for God. But Paul explained that this couldn’t be achieved through merely obeying a set of rules. Instead we’re called to walk with the Holy Spirit. The Greek word that Paul uses for “walk” in Galatians 5:16 literally means to walk around and around something, or to journey (peripateo). So for Paul, walking with the Spirit meant journeying with the Spirit each day—it’s not just a one-time experience of His power.

May we pray to be filled with the Spirit daily—to yield to the Spirit’s work as He counsels, guides, comforts, and is simply there with us. And as we’re “led by the Spirit” in this way (V. 18), we become better and better at hearing His voice and following His leading. Holy Spirit, may I walk with You today, and every day! - PETER CHIN

시간 감속

1840년대에 전기 시계가 발명된 이후로 많은 것이 바뀌었습니다. 지금은 스마트 워치, 스마트 폰, 그리고 랩탑으로 시간을 맞춥니다. 전반적인 삶의 속도가 빠르게 돌아가고 “산보하는” 걸음걸이마저 빨라졌습니다. 학자들은 도시에서 이런 현상이 더 두드러지며, 우리의 건강에 부정적인 영향을 미친다고 합니다. 리차드 와이즈만 교수는 말합니다. “우리는 점점 더 빠르게 움직이고 사람들에게도 가능한 빠르게 응답합니다. 그러다 보니 무슨 일이든 당장 일어나야 한다고 생각하기에 이르렀습니다.”

가장 오래된 시편 기자의 한 사람인 모세도 시간을 되돌아보며, 우리에게 하나님이 인생의 속도를 조절하시는 분이라고 알려줍니다. 그는 “주의 목전에는 천 년이 지나간 어제 같으며 밤의 한 순간 같을 뿐임이니이다”(시편 90:4)라고 기록했습니다.

그러므로 시간을 잘 관리하는 비결은 더 빠르거나 느리게 하는 것이 아닙니다. 비결은 하나님 안에 거하며 그분과 더 많은 시간을 보내고, 그 다음에 사람들과 조화를 이루며 사는 것입니다. 그러나 우리를 지으시고(139:13) 우리의 목적과 계획을 아시는(16절) 그분과 보조를 맞추는 것이 먼저입니다.

이 세상에서의 우리의 시간은 영원하지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 시계를 보는 것보다는 매일을 하나님께 드림으로써 시간을 지혜 있게 관리할 수 있습니다. 모세는 “우리에게 우리 날 계수함을 가르치사 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서”(90:12)라고 말했습니다. 그러면 우리는 하나님과 함께 지금부터 영원히 시간을 맞추며 살 수가 있습니다.

Slowing Down Time

A lot has changed since the electric clock was invented in the 1840s. We now keep time on smart watches, smart phones, and laptops. The entire pace of life seems faster—with even our “leisurely” walking speeding up. This is especially true in cities and can have a negative effect on health, scholars say. “We’re just moving faster and faster and getting back to people as quickly as we can,” Professor Richard Wiseman observed. “That’s driving us to think everything has to happen now.”

Moses, the writer of one of the oldest of the Bible’s psalms, reflected on time. He reminds us that God controls life’s pace. “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night,” he wrote (PSALM 90:4).

The secret to time management, therefore, isn’t to go faster or slower. It’s to abide in God, spending more time with Him. Then we get in step with each other, but first with Him— the One who formed us (139:13) and knows our purpose and plans (V. 16).

Our time on earth won’t last forever. Yet we can manage it wisely, not by watching the clock, but by giving each day to God. As Moses said, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (90:12). Then, with God we’ll always be on time, now and forever. - PATRICIA RAYBON
