기다리신 하나님

데니즈 레버토브가 유명한 시인이 되기 오래 전 겨우 12살 나이 때 대담하게도 자기의 시집을 위대한 시인 T. S. 엘리엇에게 보냈습니다. 그리고는 답장을 기다렸습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 엘리엇이 손수 격려 편지 두 장을 써서 보내주었습니다. 그녀는 시집 ‘시냇물과 사파이어’ 서문에서 그 시들이 어떻게 “불가지론에서 기독교 신앙으로 바뀌는 자기 모습을 차례로 보여주는지”를 설명했습니다. 그래서 나중에 쓴 시(“수태고지”)에서 하나님을 향한 마리아의 헌신을 이야기한 부분은 큰 감동을 줍니다. 성령께서 마리아를 강압하지 않으시고 마리아의 자유의지로 아기 그리스도를 받아들이기를 원하셨던 주님의 뜻을 언급하면서, “기다리신 하나님”이라는 두 단어가 시의 중심에 빛나고 있습니다.

레버토브는 마리아의 이야기에서 자신의 모습을 보았습니다. 하나님은 그녀를 깊이 사랑하며 기다리셨습니다. 그 어떤 것도 강요하지 않고 기다리셨습니다. 이사야도 이 같은 사실을 기록하며 하나님께서 어떻게 이스라엘에게 깊은 사랑을 부어 주시려고 그렇게 고대하며 기다리셨는지를 기록했습니다. “여호와께서 기다리시나니 이는 너희에게 은혜를 베풀려 하심이요......너희를 긍휼히 여기려 하심이라”(30:18). 하나님은 그의 백성에게 자비를 부어 주실 준비가 되어 있으셨지만, 그분께서 주시려는 것을 그들이 기꺼이 받으려할 때까지 ‘기다리셨습니다’ (19절).

세상의 구원자이신 우리 창조주께서 우리가 ‘그분’을 받아 들이기를 기다리신다는 것은 놀라운 일입니다. 우리를 아주 쉽게 이기실 수 있는 하나님께서 겸손하게 인내를 행하십니다. 거룩하신
분께서 우리를 기다리십니다.

God Waited

When Denise Levertov was just twelve, long before she became a renowned poet, she had the gumption to mail a package of poetry to the great poet T. S. Eliot. She then waited for a reply. Surprisingly, Eliot sent two pages of handwritten encouragement. In the preface to her collection The Stream and the Sapphire, she explained how the poems “trace [her] own movement from agnosticism to Christian faith.” It’s powerful, then, to recognize how one of the later poems (“Annunciation”) narrates Mary’s surrender to God. Noting the Holy Spirit’s refusal to overwhelm Mary and His desire for Mary to freely receive the Christ child, these two words blaze at the poem’s center: “God waited.”

In Mary’s story, Levertov recognized her own. God waited, eager to love her. He would not force anything upon her. He waited. Isaiah described this same reality, how God stood ready, eager with anticipation, to shower Israel with tender love. “The Lord longs to be gracious to you . . . to show you compassion” (30:18). He was ready to flood His people with kindness, and yet God waited for them to willingly receive what He offered (V. 19).

It’s a wonder that our Creator, the Savior of the world, chooses to wait for us to welcome Him. The God who could so easily overpower us practices humble patience. The Holy One waits for us. WINN COLLIER

우리에게 유익한 것

2016년에 전 세계 사람들은 대략 982억 달러의 초콜릿을 소비했습니다. 참으로 엄청난 액수이지만 사실은 그렇게 놀랄 일이 아닙니다. 초콜릿은 역시 맛이 있어 사람들이 즐겨 먹기 때문입니다. 이 달콤한 특식이 건강에도 상당히 유익한 것으로 밝혀지자 세계가 함께 기뻐했습니다. 초콜릿에는 노화와 심장질환 예방에 도움을 주는 몸에 유익한 플라보노이드라는 성분이 들어 있습니다. 이렇게 사람들이 잘 받아들이고 관심을 보인 건강 처방은 이제껏 없었습니다(물론 적절한 양에 한해서지요!).

솔로몬은 우리가 투자할 만한 또 다른 “달콤한 것”이 있다고 하였습니다. 바로 지혜입니다. 그는 아들에게 “이것이 좋으니라”(잠언 24:13)라고 하며 꿀을 먹기를 권하면서 그 달콤함을 지혜에 비교했습니다. 성경말씀 속에 들어있는 하나님의 지혜를 먹고 사는 사람은 그것이 심령에 달콤할 뿐 아니라 가르치고 훈련하는데 유익하여 우리가 살면서 이루어야 할 “모든 선한 일”을 할 수 있게 준비시킨다는 것을 알게 됩니다 (디모데후서 3:16-17).

지혜는 현명한 선택을 하게 해주고 주변 세상을 잘 이해할 수 있게 합니다. 솔로몬이 아들에게 바랐던 것처럼 지혜는 애써 키우고 사랑하는 사람들과 나눌 가치가 있습니다. 우리는 성경에 있는 하나님의 지혜를 기쁘게 누리며 살 수 있습니다. 그것은 무제한으로 즐길 수 있는 달콤한 특식이며, 실제로 우리에게 그렇게 누리라고 하십니다! 하나님, 달콤한 말씀을 주셔서 감사합니다!

Good for You

People the world over spent an estimated $98.2 billion on chocolate in 2016. The number is staggering, yet at the same time not all that surprising. Chocolate, after all, tastes delicious and we enjoy consuming it. So the world rejoiced collectively when the sweet treat was found to have significant health benefits as well. Chocolate contains flavonoids that help safeguard the body against aging and heart disease. Never has a prescription for health been so well received or heeded (in moderation, of course!).

Solomon suggested there’s another “sweet” worthy of our investment: wisdom. He recommended his son eat honey “for it is good” (PROVERBS 24:13) and compared its sweetness to wisdom. The person who feeds on God’s wisdom in Scripture finds it not only sweet to the soul but beneficial for teaching and training, equipping us for “every good work” we’ll need to accomplish in life (2 TIMOTHY 3:16–17).

Wisdom is what allows us to make smart choices and understand the world around us. And it’s worth investing in and sharing with those we love—as Solomon wished to do for his son. We can feel good about feasting on God’s wisdom in the Bible. It’s a sweet treat that we can enjoy without limit—in fact, we’re encouraged to! God, thank You for the sweetness of Your Scriptures! 기도하라는 신호

“몇 년 전에 너를 위해 기도해야겠다는 생각이 자주 들었는데 왜 그랬는지 모르겠어.”

오래된 친구가 내게 문자 메시지를 보내면서 자신이 성경책 속에 보관했던 메모를 찍은 사진을 함께 보내주었습니다. “제임스를 위해 기도하기. 마음과 생각과 말을 위해 기도할 것.” 내 이름 옆을 보니 그녀는 세 개의 연도를 적어놓았습니다.

나는 그 연도를 보고 잠시 숨을 가다듬어야 했습니다. 답장을 보내며 그녀가 몇 월에 기도를 시작했는지 물어 보았습니다. “7월 즈음”이었다는 답이 왔습니다.

그때는 내가 해외 유학을 위해 집을 떠날 준비를 하던 달이었습니다. 곧 낯선 문화와 언어 가운데 살아야 하고 어느 때보다도 강한 믿음의 도전을 앞에 둔 때였습니다. 그 메모를 보면서 나는 마음이 담긴 귀한 기도의 선물을 받았다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

친구의 그 따뜻한 마음은 나에게 또 다른 기도하라는 “신호” 를 생각나게 해주었습니다. 바울은 그의 젊은 동역자 디모데에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그러므로 내가 ‘첫째로’ 권하노니 모든 사람을 위하여 간구와 기도와 도고와 감사를 하라”(디모데전서 2:1). “첫째로” 라는 말은 최우선이라는 뜻입니다. 하나님은 “모든 사람이 구원을 받으며 (예수님에 관한) 진리를 아는 데에 이르기를”(4절) 원하시기 때문에 기도가 정말 중요하다고 바울은 설명합니다.

하나님은 여러 모양으로 드리는 신실한 기도를 통해 역사하셔서 사람들에게 힘을 주시고 하나님께로 가까이 인도하십니다. 누군가가 마음속에 떠오를 때 우리는 그 사람의 상황을 모를 수도 있지만 하나님은 아십니다. 우리가 기도할 때 하나님께서 그를 도우실 것입니다!

Prompted to Pray

“Several years ago I was prompted to pray for you often, and I wonder why.”

That text message from an old friend came with a photo of a note she’d kept in her Bible: “Pray for James. Cover mind, thoughts, words.” Beside my name she’d recorded three separate years.

I looked at the years and caught my breath. I wrote back and asked what month she began to pray. She responded, “Sometime around July.”

That was the month I was preparing to leave home for extended study abroad. I would be facing an unfamiliar culture and language and have my faith challenged like never before. As I looked at the note, I realized I’d received the precious gift of generous prayer.

My friend’s kindness reminded me of another “prompting” to pray, Paul’s instruction to his young missionary friend Timothy: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people” (1 TIMOTHY 2:1). The phrase “first of all” indicates highest priority. Our prayers matter, Paul explains, because God “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” about Jesus (V. 4).

God moves through faithful prayer in countless ways to encourage others and draw them near to Himself. We may not know someone’s circumstances when they come to mind, but God does. And He’ll help that person as we pray! JAMES BANKS

아름다운 열매

“아이들은 원하는 곳[정원]에 씨를 뿌릴 수 있어야 하고 무엇이 돋는지 볼 수 있어야 한다.”고 시티 블러섬의 설립자인 레베카 레모스 오테로는 제안합니다. 본격적인 원예의 모습은 아니지만, 이 말은 씨앗 하나하나가 생명으로 피어날 잠재력이 있다는 사실을 잘 보여줍니다. 2004년 이후, 시티 블러섬은 저소득 지역의 학교와 이웃을 위해 정원을 만들었습니다. 아이들은 정원 가꾸기를 통해 영양에 대해 배우고 직업 기술을 습득합니다. 레베카는 말합니다. “도시 지역에 활기찬 녹색 공간을 갖추는 것은......아이들이 집 밖에서 생산적이며 아름다운 그 무엇을 할 수 있는 길을 마련해줍니다.”

예수님은 “심은 것보다 백배의 결실을” 거둘 수 있는 씨 뿌리는 이야기를 하셨습니다(누가복음 8:8). 그 씨앗은 “좋은 땅”에 심어진 하나님의 좋은 소식인데, 좋은 땅이란 “착하고 좋은 마음으로 말씀을 듣고 지키어 인내로 결실하는 자”(15절)라고 예수님이 설명하셨습니다.

예수님은 우리가 열매 맺는 유일한 방법은 예수님께 계속 붙어 있는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 15:4). 우리가 예수님의 가르침을 받고 주님께 매달릴 때 성령께서 우리 안에서 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제” (갈라디아서 5:22-23)의 열매를 맺어 주십니다. 성령님은 우리 안에서 맺어 주신 열매를 다른 사람들의 삶에 영향을 끼치는데 사용하셔서, 그 사람들이 변화되어 자신의 삶에서도 열매를 맺게 하십니다. 이렇게 하여 아름다운 삶이 만들어지는 것입니다.

Beautiful Fruit

“Kids should be able to throw a seed anywhere they want [in the garden] and see what pops up,” suggests Rebecca Lemos-Otero, founder of City Blossoms. While this is not a model for careful gardening, it reflects the reality that each seed has the potential to burst forth with life. Since 2004, City Blossoms has created gardens for schools and neighborhoods in low-income areas. The kids are learning about nutrition and gaining job skills through gardening. Rebecca says, “Having a lively green space in an urban area . . . creates a way for kids to be outside doing something productive and beautiful.”

Jesus told a story about the scattering of seed that had the potential of producing “a hundred times more than was sown” (LUKE 8:8). That seed was God’s good news planted on “good soil,” which He explained is “honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest” (V. 15 NLT).

The only way we can be fruitful, Jesus said, is to stay connected to Him (JOHN 15:4). As we’re taught by Christ and cling to Him, the Spirit produces in us His fruit of “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol” (GALATIANS 5:22–23). He uses the fruit He produces in us to touch the lives of others, who are then changed and grow fruit from their own lives. This makes for a beautiful life. ANNE CETAS

계획된 결점

예루살렘의 동쪽에서 솟아나는 천연의 샘이 있습니다. 고대에는 그것이 그 도시의 유일한 상수원이었고 성벽 ‘밖에’ 위치하고 있어서 예루살렘의 가장 큰 취약점이기도 했습니다. 무방비의 샘은 침략자가 샘의 흐름을 돌려 버리거나 막아버리면, 난공불락의 그 도시가 항복할 수밖에 없다는 것을 의미 합니다.

히스기야 왕은 샘에서 도시 안의 “저수지”까지 물이 흘러가도록 1,750 피트(533미터)의 바위 터널을 뚫어 이 약점을 해결했습니다(열왕기하 20:20; 역대하 32:2-4 참조). 그러나 히스기야는 이 모든 일에 있어서 “일이 이렇게 되도록 하신 분을 의지하지 않고, 이 일을 옛적부터 계획하신 분에게는 관심도 없었습니다” (이사야 22:11, 새번역). ‘무슨’ 계획을 말하는 것일까요?

하나님께서 친히 예루살렘의 물 공급이 보호받지 못하도록 “계획하신 것입니다.” 성벽 밖의 샘은 그 도시의 주민들이 구원을 위해 오직 하나님만 의지해야 한다는 점을 끊임없이 상기시켜 주는 상징이었습니다.

우리의 결점이 우리의 유익을 위해 존재할 수 있을까요? 실제로 바울 사도는 예수님의 아름다움과 권능이 그의 약함을 통해 나타났기 때문에 자신의 부족한 약점을 “자랑하겠다”고 말했습니다(고린도후서 12:9-10). 우리도 우리의 부족한 약점 하나 하나마다 하나님이 우리의 능력으로 나타나는 선물로 여길 수 있을까요?

A Designed Deficiency

There’s a natural spring that rises on the east side of the city of Jerusalem. In ancient times it was the city’s only water supply and was located outside the walls. Thus it was the point of Jerusalem’s greatest vulnerability. The exposed spring meant that the city, otherwise impenetrable, could be forced to surrender if an attacker were to divert or dam the spring.

King Hezekiah addressed this weakness by driving a tunnel through 1,750 feet of solid rock from the spring into the city where it flowed into the “Lower Pool” (SEE 2 KINGS 20:20; 2 CHRONICLES 32:2–4). But in all of this, Hezekiah “did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago” (ISAIAH 22:11). Planned what?

God Himself “planned” the city of Jerusalem in such a way that its water supply was unprotected. The spring outside the wall was a constant reminder that the inhabitants of the city must depend solely on Him for their salvation.

Can it be that our deficiencies exist for our good? Indeed, the apostle Paul said that he would “boast” in his limitations, because it was through weakness that the beauty and power of Jesus was seen in him (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9–10). Can we then regard each limitation as a gift that reveals God as our strength? DAVID H. ROPER

사랑의 세탁

미국 남캘리포니아의 한 작은 교회가 하나님의 사랑을 실제로 표현할 기회를 만들었습니다. 교인들이 동네 빨래방에 모여 재정적으로 어려운 사람들의 옷을 대신 세탁해 준 것입니다. 그들은 함께 옷을 세탁하고 잘 개어 주었으며, 때로는 따뜻한 식사를 대접하거나 식료품을 한 보따리씩 안겨주기도 했습니다.

한 자원봉사자는 그 일에 대한 가장 큰 보람이 “사람들과 실제로 만나 그들의 이야기를 들어주는 것”임을 알았습니다. 예수님과의 관계 때문에, 이 자원봉사자들은 사랑의 말과 행동을 통해 이웃과 진정한 관계를 발전시키는 데 도움을 주면서 그들의 믿음을 실천하는 삶을 살기 원했습니다.

야고보 사도는 신자들이 드러내는 모든 사랑의 섬김이야말로 진정한 믿음의 증거라고 단언합니다. 그는 “행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라”고 말합니다 (야고보서 2:14-17). 우리가 믿음을 선포함으로 하나님의 자녀가 되지만, 다른 사람들을 섬김으로써 예수님을 섬길 때 비로소 예수님을 믿고 따르는 신자로서 행동하는 것입니다(24절). 믿음과 섬김은 육체와 정신만큼 밀접한 상호의존성을 가지고 있습니다 (26절). 그리스도께서 우리 안에서, 우리를 통해 일하실 때 그리스도의 권능이 아름답게 나타납니다.

십자가에서의 하나님의 희생이 우리를 완전한 사랑으로 깨끗케 한다는 것을 개인적으로 받아들인 후, 우리는 참된 믿음의 충만한 모습으로 우리의 이웃들을 섬길 수 있습니다.

Washed in Love

A small church in Southern California recognized an opportunity to express God’s love in a practical way. Believers in Jesus gathered at a local laundromat to give back to their community by washing clothes for those in financial need. They cleaned and folded clothes together, and sometimes provided a hot meal or bags of groceries for recipients.

One volunteer discovered the greatest reward was in the “actual contact with people . . . hearing their stories.” Because of their relationship with Jesus, these volunteers wanted to live out their faith through loving words and actions that helped them nurture genuine relationships with others.

The apostle James affirms that every act of a professing believer’s loving service is a result of genuine faith. He states that “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (JAMES 2:14–17). Declaring we believe makes us children of God, but it’s when we serve Him by serving others that we act as believers who trust and follow Jesus (V. 24). Faith and service are as closely interdependent as the body and the spirit (V. 26), a beautiful display of the power of Christ as He works in and through us.

After personally accepting that God’s sacrifice on the cross washes us in perfect love, we can respond in authentic faith that overflows into the ways we serve others. XOCHITL DIXON

결코 잊히지 않음

몇 년 동안 힘들게 배운 피아노의 기본기를 보여 달라는 아이들에게 들볶이다가 나는 피아노 앞에 앉아 C장조 음계를 연주하기 시작했습니다. 거의 20년 동안 피아노를 치지 않았기에 나는 내가 기억하고 있다는 사실에 놀랐습니다! 용기를 내어 나는 곧바로 7개의 다른 음계를 하나씩 연주하기 시작했습니다. 충격이었습니다! 여러 해 동안의 연습이 내 손가락의 “기억” 속에 음표와 기법을 깊숙이 새겨 놓아 손가락이 바로 무엇을 해야 할지 알고 있었던 것입니다.

평생 잊히지 않는 것들이 있습니다. 그러나 자녀를 향한 하나님의 사랑은 우리의 희미해지는 어떤 기억보다도 훨씬 깊이 새겨져 있습니다. 사실, 하나님은 자녀들을 정말 잊을 수 없습니다. 이스라엘 민족이 유배되어 하나님에게 버림받았다고 느꼈을 때 그들이 이 말을 들어야 했습니다 (이사야 49:14). 하나님은 이사야를 통해 분명히 대답하셨습니다. “나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(15절). 그의 백성을 돌보시겠다는 하나님의 약속은 자식을 사랑하는 어머니의 약속보다도 더 확실했습니다.

Never Forgotten

Egged on by my children to prove I’d endured years mastering the basics of piano, I sat down and started playing the C Major scale. Having played very little piano in nearly two decades, I was surprised I remembered! Feeling brave, I proceeded to play seven different scales by heart one right after the other. I was shocked! Years of practicing had imprinted the notes and technique so deeply in my fingers’ “memory” that they instantly knew what to do.

There are some things that can never be forgotten. But God’s love for His children is far more deeply imprinted than any of our fading memories—in fact, God can’t forget them. This is what the Israelites needed to hear when the exile left them feeling abandoned by Him (ISAIAH 49:14). His response through Isaiah was unequivocal: “I will not forget you!” (V. 15). God’s promise to care for His people was more certain than a mother’s love for her child.

To assure them of His unchanging love, He gave them a picture of His commitment: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (V. 16). It’s a beautiful image of God’s constant awareness of His children; their names and faces always before Him.

Still today, we can easily feel overlooked and forgotten. How comforting to remember that we’re “etched” on God’s hands— always remembered, cared for, and loved by our Father. LISA M. SAMRA

런던 BBC에서의 폴 아놀드의 첫 방송 작업은 라디오 드라마에서 “걷는 소리”를 내는 것이었습니다. 성우들이 걷는 장면에서 대본을 읽는 동안, 무대 감독인 폴은 걸음 속도를 성우의 목소리와 대사에 세심히 맞추면서 그의 발로 장면에 해당하는 소리를 만들어냈습니다. 그가 설명하는 제일 중요한 점은 드라마에서 성우를 쫓아 잘 따라하면서 “우리 둘이 함께 일하는 것” 입니다.

시편 119편의 기자는 그와 같은 협력의 종교적 버전을 추구하면서 하나님 말씀의 계율에 따라 사는 삶을 강조했습니다. 시편 119편 1절에서처럼 “행위가 온전하여 여호와의 율법을 따라 행하는 자들은 복이 있습니다.” 하나님이 인도하시는 대로 그분의 지시를 따라가면 우리는 순수함을 유지하고(9절) 멸시를 이겨내며(23절) 탐욕에서 벗어날 수 있습니다(36절). 하나님은 우리가 죄악에 저항하고 (61절) 경건한 친구를 만나(63절) 기쁨 속에 살 수 있게(111절) 해주실 것입니다.

신학자 찰스 브리지스는 133절을 이렇게 주석했습니다. “그러므로 이 세상으로 한 걸음 내디딜 때 나는 이렇게 묻습니다. 그것은 그리스도를 나의 완벽한 본보기로 보여주시는 하나님의 말씀이 명한 것인가?”

이 길을 걸어가면 우리는 세상에 예수님을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 부디 우리가 예수님과 아주 가까이 걷게 하셔서 사람들이 우리 안에서 우리의 지도자이자 친구이며 구세주인 주님을 볼 수 있게 도와주소서!

Led by His Word

At the BBC in London, Paul Arnold’s first broadcasting job was making “walking sounds” in radio dramas. While actors read from scripts during a walking scene, Paul as stage manager made corresponding sounds with his feet—careful to match his pace to the actor’s voice and spoken lines. The key challenge, he explained, was yielding to the actor in the story, “so the two of us were working together.”

A divine version of such cooperation was sought by the author of Psalm 119, which emphasizes living by the precepts of God’s Word. As Psalm 119:1 says, “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.” Led this way by God and following His instructions, we can remain pure (V. 9), overcome scorn (V. 23), and escape greed (V. 36). He will enable us to resist sin (V. 61), find godly friends (V. 63), and live in joy (V. 111).

Theologian Charles Bridges commented on verse 133: “When I take therefore a step into the world, let me ask—Is it ordered in God’s word, which exhibits Christ as my perfect example?”

Walking this way, we show the world Jesus. May He help us walk so closely with Him that people glimpse in us our Leader, Friend, and Savior! PATRICIA RAYBON

큰 혼란

우리가 봉사하는 여러 가지 이유를 탐구하는 작가 로버트 콜스는 그의 저서 ‘봉사의 부름’에서 다른 사람들에게 봉사하는 나이든 여성의 감동적인 이야기를 들려줍니다. 버스 운전사인 이 할머니는 매일 아이들을 학교에 실어다 주면서 숙제를 물어보고 잘한 일을 칭찬하는 등, 아이들을 아주 잘 돌보았습니다. “나는 이 아이들이 인생에서 성공하는 것을 보고 싶어요.” 그녀는 자기가 그 일을 하는 동기를 그렇게 말했지만, 거기에는 또 다른 이유도 있었습니다.

어렸을 때 들었던 이모의 말이 이 여인의 마음속 깊이 자리 잡았던 것입니다. 그 여인이 콜스에게 한 말입니다. “이모는 우리에게 하나님이 알아줄 만한 일을 해야 한다고 말하곤 했어요. 그렇지 않으면 우리는 큰 혼란 속에서 길을 잃을 거라고 했어요!” 심판 날의 “큰 혼란”을 겪은 후 지옥에 갈 것을 염려했던 이 여인은 “하나님의 관심을 끌” 방법을 고안해 냈습니다. “나의 충성스러운 모습을 하나님이 보실” 수 있도록 교회에 다니고, 하나님이 “내가 하는 일을 다른 사람을 통해 들을” 수 있도록 다른 사람들을 열심히 섬기는 것이었습니다.

나는 그 여인의 말을 읽고 슬픈 생각이 들었습니다. 이 사랑스러운 여인은 자신이 이미 하나님의 관심을 받고 있다는 사실을 왜 몰랐을까요?(마태복음 10:30). 어떻게 예수님이 우리를 위해 큰 혼란을 해결해 주셔서 심판으로부터 영원히 자유롭게 해주셨다는 말을 듣지 못했을까요?(로마서 8:1). 어떻게 그는 구원이 선행으로 살 수 없고 믿는 모든 사람에게 주어지는 선물이라는 것을 알지 못했을까요?(에베소서 2:8-9).

그리스도의 삶과 죽음, 부활은 하나님과 함께 할 우리의 미래를 책임지며, 우리를 자유롭게 하여 다른 사람들을 즐겁게 섬기게 해줍니다.

The Big Shuffle

In The Call of Service, author Robert Coles, exploring our reasons for serving, tells the moving story of an older woman’s service to others. As a bus driver, she showed great care toward the children she drove to school each day—quizzing them on homework and celebrating their successes. “I want to see these kids make it in life,” she said of her motivation. But there was another reason too.

As a youth, the words of an aunt had shaken this woman to the core. “She’d tell us that we had to do something God would notice,” she told Coles, “or else we’d get lost in the big shuffle!” Worried at the prospect of hell after the “big shuffle” of judgment, this woman had devised ways to “get God’s attention”—going to church so “He’d see me being loyal” and working hard to serve others so God might “hear from others what I was doing.”

I grieved reading her words. How had this dear woman never known that she already had God’s attention? (MATTHEW 10:30). How had she not heard that Jesus took care of the big shuffle for us, offering freedom from judgment forever? (ROMANS 8:1). How had she missed that salvation can’t be bought with good deeds but is a gift to anyone who believes? (EPHESIANS 2:8–9).

Christ’s life, death, and resurrection take care of our future with God and set us free to serve others with joy. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

점점 더 많이 베풂

“할아버지 선물 샀어!” 두 살배기 손자가 내 손에 상자를 들이밀며 신나게 소리쳤습니다. “그 애가 혼자 골랐어요.” 아내가 빙그레 웃었습니다.

상자를 열자 아이가 좋아하는 만화 캐릭터의 크리스마스 장식이 있었습니다. “나도 봐도 돼?” 아이가 간절히 바라는 눈길로 물었습니다. 그리고는 저녁 내내 “내” 선물을 가지고 놀았습니다. 그런 손자를 보면서 나는 미소를 지었습니다.

나는 사랑하는 사람들에게 예전에 준 선물들이 생각나서 미소를 지었습니다. 그 중 하나는 고등학교 시절 어느 크리스마스에 내가 형에게 음악 앨범을 주었었는데 그 앨범은 내가 정말 듣고 싶었던 것이었습니다. (그리고 실제로 들었습니다). 나는 오랜 세월이 지난 지금까지 하나님이 여전히 나에게 오셔서 받는 사람을 더 헤아려 가며 베풀라고 가르치시는 것을 깨달았습니다.

베풂은 우리가 점점 더 키워 나가야 할 일입니다. 바울은 이렇게 썼습니다. “여러분은 모든 일에 있어 뛰어납니다...... 여러분은 이 은혜로운 활동에서도 뛰어나야 할 것입니다”(고린도후서 8:7, 새번역). 우리가 가진 모든 것이 하나님에게서 받은 것이라는 것을 알 때 우리의 베풂이 은혜로 가득하게 됩니다. 그리고 하나님은 “주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다”(사도행전 20:35)는 것을 보여주셨습니다.

하나님은 무엇보다도 가장 이기적이지 않은 선물을 우리에게 아낌없이 주셨습니다. 그 선물은 우리의 죄를 위해 십자가에서 돌아가시고 다시 살아나신 하나님의 독생자 예수님이십니다. 이 최고의 선물을 받은 사람은 누구나 측량할 수 없을 만큼 부유한 사람입니다. 우리의 마음이 주님께 맞춰져 있으면, 우리의 손이 다른 사람을 향한 사랑으로 열리게 됩니다.

Growing into Giving

“I got you a present!” my two-year-old grandson shouted excitedly as he pressed a box into my hands. “He picked it out all by himself,” my wife smiled.

I opened the box to find a Christmas ornament of his favorite cartoon character. “Can I see it?” he asked anxiously. Then he played with “my” present for the rest of the evening, and as I watched him, I smiled.

I smiled because I remembered gifts I had given loved ones in the past, like the music album I gave my older brother one Christmas when I was in high school that I really wanted to listen to (and did). And I realized how years later God was still stretching me and teaching me to give more unselfishly.

Giving is something we grow into. Paul wrote, “But since you excel in everything . . . see that you also excel in this grace of giving” (2 CORINTHIANS 8:7). Grace fills our giving as we understand that all we have is from God, and He has shown us “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (ACTS 20:35).

God generously gave us the most unselfish gift of all: His only Son, who would die on a cross for our sins and be raised to life. Any who receive this ultimate gift are rich beyond measure. As our hearts are focused on Him, our hands open in love to others. JAMES BANKS
