예수님, 그리고 더 큰 이야기

마음씨 좋은 친구가 우리 아이들을 봐주겠다고 해서 아내와 함께 밖에서 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다. “아주 멋진데 갔다 와.” 친구가 소리쳤습니다. 그러나 우리 부부는 현실적인 사람들이다 보니 그냥 식료품점에서 장을 보기로 했습니다. 장거리를 담은 봉지를 안고 집에 돌아오니 친구가 왜 특별한 시간을 가지지 않았느냐고 물었습니다. 우리는 특별한 데이트란 무슨 엄청난 일을 하느냐 보다는 누구와 함께 하느냐에 달려있다고 대답했습니다.

성경 중에는 하나님이 직접 하신 말씀이나 행하신 일이 기록되어 있지 않은 책이 있습니다. 그 중 하나가 룻기입니다. 그렇다보니 이 책은 매우 평범해 보일 수 있습니다. 그래서 어떤 사람들에게는 이 책이 두 사람이 관계를 이루어가는 감동적인 한 편의 휴먼 드라마로 주로 읽히고 있습니다.

하지만 이 책의 이야기 속에서는 사실 무언가 특별한 일이 일어나고 있습니다. 룻기의 마지막 장에서 룻과 보아스가 결혼하여 오벳이라는 아들을 낳는데, 그가 곧 다윗의 할아버지입니다(4:17). 그리고 마태복음 1장 1절에 기록된 것처럼 예수님은 바로 다윗 집안에서 탄생하십니다. 룻과 보아스의 평범한 이야기를 밝혀 하나님의 놀라운 계획과 목적이 이루어지는 특별한 이야기로 드러내신 분이 바로 예수님입니다.

우리도 너무 자주 그처럼 우리 자신들의 삶이 평범하고, 그 어떤 특별한 목적도 없이 살아간다고 생각합니다. 하지만 그리스도를 통해 우리 삶을 바라보면, 주님은 가장 평범한 상황과 관계까지도 영원한 의미를 갖게 해주십니다.

예수님, 주님은 지극히 평범한 상황에 영원한 목적과 의미를 부여해 주십니다. 저의 모든 관계와 상황을 주님을 통해 볼 수 있게 도와주소서.

Jesus and the Bigger Story

A generous friend offered to babysit our kids so my wife and I could go on a date. “You should go somewhere fancy!” she gushed. Being practical people, we decided to go grocery shopping instead. When we returned, grocery bags in arms, our friend asked why we hadn’t done anything special. We told her that what makes a date special isn’t so much what you do, but who you’re with.

One of the few books of the Bible that doesn’t record God directly saying or doing anything, the book of Ruth could seem to be pretty ordinary. So some read it as a touching but largely human drama of two people coming together in a relationship.

But in truth, something extraordinary is taking place. In the final chapter of Ruth, we read that Ruth and Boaz’s union results in a son named Obed, the grandfather of David (4:17). And as we read in Matthew 1:1, it’s from David’s family that Jesus was born. It’s Jesus who unveils the ordinary story of Ruth and Boaz and reveals the extraordinary story of God’s amazing plans and purposes at work.

So often we see our own lives in the same way: as ordinary and serving no special purpose. But when we view our lives through Christ, He gives eternal significance to even the most ordinary situations and relationships. PETER CHIN

하나님께 구함

남편 댄이 암 선고를 받자 나는 하나님께 그를 고쳐 달라고 어떻게 “제대로” 간구해야 할지 몰랐습니다. 나의 좁은 소견으로 볼 때도, 세상의 많은 사람들에게 전쟁이나 기근, 빈곤, 천재지변 같은 심각한 문제들이 있었습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 아침 기도 시간에 남편의 겸손한 기도 소리가 내게 새삼스럽게 들렸습니다. “사랑하는 주님, 제 병을 고쳐주세요.”

매우 간결하면서도 진심어린 간구 였습니다. 그래서 나는 기도할 때마다 복잡하고 어렵게 하지 않아야겠다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 우리가 도와달라고 진정으로 부르짖으면 온전히 다 들으시기 때문입니다. 다윗도 간결하게 기도했습니다. “여호와여 돌아와 나의 영혼을 건지시며 주의 사랑으로 나를 구원하소서”(시편 6:4).

그것은 다윗이 영적으로 혼란스럽고 낙심될 때 한 기도입니다. 이 시편에는 다윗이 정확히 어떤 상황에 처해 있었는지 설명되어 있지 않습니다. 그러나 솔직한 그의 간구 속에 하나님의 도우심과 회복을 바라는 간절한 마음이 잘 나타나 있습니다. 그는 말합니다. “나는 탄식만 하다가 지치고 말았습니다”(6절, 새번역).

물론 다윗에게 죄를 포함한 자신의 여러 가지 약점이 있었지만, 그것들 때문에 하나님께 도움을 구하러 나아가지 못할 바는 아니었습니다. 그래서 그는 하나님께서 응답하시기 전에도 기뻐할 수 있었습니다. “여호와께서 내 울음소리를 들으셨도다 여호와께서 내 간구를 들으셨음이여 여호와께서 내 기도를 받으시리로다” (8-9절).

우리 자신의 혼란과 의심에도 불구하고 하나님은 자녀들의 솔직한 간구를 들으시고 받아주십니다. 하나님은 언제나 귀를 여시고 특히 그분을 가장 필요로 할 때 드리는 기도를 들어주십니다.

Asking God

When my husband, Dan, was diagnosed with cancer, I couldn’t find the “right” way to ask God to heal him. In my limited view, other people in the world had such serious problems—war, famine, poverty, natural disasters. Then one day, during our morning prayer time, I heard my husband humbly ask, “Dear Lord, please heal my disease.”

It was such a simple but heartfelt plea that it reminded me to stop complicating every prayer request, because God perfectly hears our righteous cries for help. As David simply asked, “Turn, Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love” (PSALM 6:4).

That’s what David declared during a time of spiritual confusion and despair. His exact situation isn’t explained in this psalm. His honest pleas, however, show deep desire for godly help and restoration. “I am worn out from my groaning,” he wrote (V. 6).

Yet, David didn’t let his own limits, including sin, stop him from going to God with his need. Thus, even before God answered, David was able to rejoice, “the Lord has heard my weeping. The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer” (VV. 8–9).

Despite our own confusion and uncertainty, God hears and accepts the honest pleas of His children. He’s ready to hear us, especially when we need Him most. PATRICIA RAYBON

두려움을 극복하기

32년 동안 두려움에 사로잡혀 살아온 한 남자가 있었습니다. 그는 자기가 저지른 범죄로 잡히는 것이 두려워, 누이동생의 농가에 숨어 아무데도 가지 않고 아무도 만나러 가지 않았으며 심지어 자기 어머니의 장례식에도 참석하지 않았습니다. 그러나 예순 네 살이 되었을 때에야 비로소 그는 자신에게 그 어떤 혐의도 제기된 적이 없었다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 이제 자유롭게 되어 다시 정상적인 삶을 살 수 있게 되었습니다. 그렇습니다. 처벌의 위협은 실제적인 것이긴 했지만, 그 남자는 처벌에 대한 두려움 때문에 스스로를 옥죄어버린 것입니다.

마찬가지로 이스라엘 사람들도 블레셋 사람들이 엘라 골짜기로 싸우려고 왔을 때 두려움에 짓눌려 있었습니다. 그 위협은 엄연한 현실이었습니다. 적장 골리앗은 키가 거의 3미터나 되었고 입고 있는 갑옷의 무게만 125파운드 (약 57킬로그램)였습니다(사무엘상 17:4-5). 골리앗은 40일간 매일 아침저녁으로 이스라엘 군대에 싸움을 걸어왔습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 쪽에서는 다윗이 전선을 찾아오기 전까지 아무도 감히 나서는 사람이 없었습니다. 조롱하는 것을 보고 들은 다윗은 골리앗과 싸우겠다고 자청하여 나섰습니다.

이스라엘 병사 모두는 골리앗이 너무 커서 싸울 수 없다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 양치기 소년 다윗은 골리앗이 하나님에 비하면 그렇게 크지 않다는 것을 알았습니다. 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “전쟁은 여호와께 속한 것인즉 그가 구원하시리라”(47절).

두려움에 사로잡혀 있을 때, 우리 모두 다윗의 본을 따라 하나님께 시선을 고정시키고 문제를 똑바로 인식하도록 합시다. 위협이 엄연한 현실일지라도, 우리와 함께 하시고 우리를 위해 계시는 그분은 우리와 맞서는 적보다 더 크십니다.

Overcoming Fear

Fear ruled a man’s life for thirty-two years. Afraid of being caught for his crimes, he hid at his sister’s farmhouse, going nowhere and visiting no one, even missing his mother’s funeral. When he was sixty-four, he learned that no charges had ever been filed against him. The man was free to resume a normal life. Yes, the threat of punishment was real, but he allowed the fear of it to control him.

Likewise, fear ruled the Israelites when the Philistines challenged them at the Valley of Elah. The threat was real. Their enemy Goliath was 9 feet 9 inches tall and his body armor alone weighed 125 pounds (1 SAMUEL 17:4–5). For forty days, every morning and evening, Goliath challenged the Israelite army to fight him. But no one dared come forward. No one until David visited the battle lines. He heard and saw the taunting, and volunteered to fight Goliath.

While everyone in the Israelite army thought Goliath was too big to fight, David the shepherd boy knew he wasn’t too big for God. He said, “the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s” (V. 47).

When we’re gripped by fear, let’s follow David’s example and fix our eyes on God to gain a right perspective of the problem. The threat may be real, but the One who is with us and for us is bigger than that which is against us. ALBERT LEE

탕감된 빚

2009년 로스앤젤레스 카운티는 미성년 범죄자들을 수감하는데 드는 비용을 그 가족들에게 부과하는 것을 중단했습니다. 그 후 새로 부과되는 비용은 없었지만, 정책이 바뀌기 전에 미납된 비용은 여전히 빚으로 남아 있어 갚아야만 했습니다. 그러다가 2018년에 카운티 당국은 모든 미납된 빚을 탕감해주었습니다.

빚의 탕감은 살아가기에 급급한 가정에 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 재산이나 급료를 더 이상 차압하지 않는다는 것은 기본 생계가 더 나아질 수 있다는 것을 의미했습니다. 하나님이 7년마다 부채를 면제해 주라고 명하신 것도 바로 그런 어려움 때문이었습니다(신명기 15:2). 하나님은 사람들이 빚 때문에 영원히 무기력해지기를 원치 않으셨습니다.

이스라엘 사람들은 같은 이스라엘 사람에게 빌려준 돈에 이자를 물리지 못하게 되어 있었습니다(출애굽기 22:25). 그렇기 때문에 이웃에게 돈을 빌려주는 목적은 무슨 이익을 위해서가 아니라 흉년 같은 일로 힘들게 살아가는 사람들을 도와주는데 있었습니다. 7년마다 빚을 면제받게 되다 보니 결과적으로 빈곤층이 줄어들게 되었습니다(신명기 15:4).

오늘날 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 그런 율법에 매여 있지 않습니다. 그러나 하나님은 때때로 우리가 남에게 준 빚을 면제해줄 마음을 주셔서 어렵게 살아온 사람들이 사회에 도움을 주는 사람들로 새롭게 출발하게 하십니다. 우리가 그런 자비와 너그러움을 다른 사람들에게 보여줄 때, 하나님의 성품을 높여드리고 사람들에게 희망을 주게 됩니다.

Canceled Debts

In 2009, Los Angeles County stopped charging families for the costs of their children’s incarceration. Though no new fees were charged, those with unpaid fees from before the change in policy were still required to settle their debt. Then in 2018 the county canceled all outstanding financial obligations.

For some families, canceling the debt aided greatly in their struggle to survive; no longer having liens on their property or wages being garnished meant they were better able to put food on the table. It was for this kind of hardship that God called for debts to be forgiven every seven years (DEUTERONOMY 15:2). He didn’t want people to be crippled forever by them.

Because the Israelites were forbidden to charge interest on a loan to fellow Israelites (EXODUS 22:25), their motives for lending to a neighbor weren’t to make a profit, but rather to help those who were enduring hard times, perhaps due to a bad harvest. Debts were to be freely forgiven every seven years. As a result, there would be less poverty among the people (DEUTERONOMY 15:4).

Today, believers in Jesus aren’t bound by these laws. But God might occasionally prompt us to forgive a debt so those who’ve been struggling can begin afresh as contributing members of society. When we show such mercy and generosity to others, we lift up God’s character and give people hope. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

막바지에 받은 은혜

예술가 더그 머키의 출중한 조각품 ‘불굴의 믿음’은 호두나무로 만든 십자가에 필사적으로 매달려 있는 청동 인간상입니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “이 작품은 우리의 변함없는 적절한 삶의 자세, 곧 그리스도와 복음에 대한 온전하고 무조건적인 친밀함과 의지함을 아주 단순하게 표현한 것입니다.”

이와 같은 믿음을 우리는 마가복음 5:25-34에서 이름 없는 한 여인의 말과 행동에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 이 여인은 12년간이나 황폐한 삶을 살았습니다 (25절). “그녀는 많은 의사들을 찾아다니며 치료를 받느라고 무척 고생하였고 있던 재산도 다 허비하였으나 나아지기는커녕 오히려 병만 더 악화되었습니다”(26절, 현대인의 성경). 그러나 예수님에 관한 소식을 듣고 그 여인은 주님께로 가 주님께 손을 대었고 “병이 나았습니다” (27-29절).

당신도 지금 삶의 막다른 곳에 와 있습니까? 가지고 있던 모든 것이 다 없어졌습니까? 그러나 불안하고 절망적이며 어찌해야 할지 모르고 괴로움 중에 있어도 낙심하지 않아도 됩니다. 주 예수님은 고통 받는 그 여인이나 머키의 조각에 나타난 그런 절박한 믿음에 지금 응답해주십니다. 이 믿음은 찬송가 작사자 찰스 웨슬리의 노랫말에도 잘 나타나 있습니다. “천부여 의지 없어서 손들고 옵니다.” 그런 믿음이 없다고요? 하나님을 신뢰하게 해달라고 그분께 간구하십시오. 웨슬리의 찬송가는 이 기도로 끝나고 있습니다. “믿음의 주여, 내 지친 눈길을 주께 드오니, 영 죽을 내 영혼 그 선물 받게 하소서.”

Grace at the End

Artist Doug Merkey’s masterful sculpture Ruthless Trust features a bronze human figure clinging desperately to a cross made of walnut wood. He writes, “It’s a very simple expression of our constant and appropriate posture for life—total, unfettered intimacy with and dependency upon Christ and the gospel.”

That’s the kind of trust we see expressed in the actions and words of the unnamed woman in Mark 5:25–34. For twelve years her life had been in shambles (V. 25). “She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse” (V. 26). But having heard about Jesus, she made her way to Him, touched Him, and was “freed from her suffering” (VV. 27–29).

Have you come to the end of yourself? Have you depleted all your resources? Anxious, hopeless, lost, distressed people need not despair. The Lord Jesus still responds to desperate faith—the kind displayed by this suffering woman and depicted in Merkey’s sculpture. This faith is expressed in the words of hymn writer Charles Wesley: “Father, I stretch my hands to Thee; no other help I know.” Don’t have that kind of faith? Ask God to help you trust Him. Wesley’s hymn concludes with this prayer: “Author of faith, to Thee I lift my weary, longing eyes; O may I now receive that gift! My soul, without it, dies.” ARTHUR JACKSON

인도하시는 빛

한 박물관에서 나는 고대 램프들이 전시되어 있는 곳에서 오래 머물렀습니다. 그 램프들은 이스라엘에서 온 것들이라고 표시되어 있었습니다. 조각된 디자인으로 장식된 이 타원형의 점토 램프에는 두 개의 구멍이 있었는데, 하나는 연료를 넣는 곳이고 다른 하나는 심지를 위한 것이었습니다. 이스라엘 사람들은 이 램프들을 보통 벽면에 우묵하게 들어간 공간에 두고 사용했지만, 하나하나의 크기는 사람 손바닥에 올려놓을 수 있을 정도로 작았습니다.

어쩌면 다윗 왕이 그 작은 등불을 보고 영감을 받아 이런 찬양곡을 쓴 것인지도 모릅니다. “여호와여 주는 나의 등불이시니 여호와께서 나의 어둠을 밝히시리이다”(사무엘하 22:29). 다윗이 이 노래를 부른 것은 하나님께서 그가 전투에서 승리하게 하신 후였습니다. 나라 안팎에서 그의 대적들이 그에게 몰래 다가와 그를 죽이려 했습니다. 그러나 다윗은 하나님과 관계를 맺고 있었기 때문에 겁을 먹고 뒤로 숨지 않았습니다. 그는 하나님께서 함께 하신다는 확신을 가지고 앞으로 나아가 적과 대결하였습니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 그는 상황을 분명히 파악할 수 있었고, 그래서 자기 자신은 물론 그의 군대와 나라를 위해 올바른 결정을 내릴 수 있었습니다.

다윗이 그의 노래에서 언급한 어둠이라는 말에는 아마도 연약함과 패배, 죽음에 대한 두려움이 내포되어 있었을지 모릅니다. 우리들 상당수도 그와 비슷한 걱정거리들로 불안과 스트레스 속에 살고 있습니다. 어둠이 우리를 내리 누를 때 우리가 평강을 누릴 수 있는 것은 하나님이 우리와도 함께 하신다는 것을 알기 때문입니다. 성령님의 성스러운 불꽃이 우리 안에서 타올라 예수님을 대면할 때까지 우리의 앞길을 밝혀주십니다.

Our Guiding Light

At a museum, I lingered near a display of ancient lamps. A sign revealed they were from Israel. Decorated with carved designs, these oval-shaped clay vessels had two openings— one for fuel, and one for a wick. Although the Israelites commonly used them in wall alcoves, each was small enough to fit in the palm of a person’s hand.

Perhaps a little light like this inspired King David to write a praise song in which he said, “You Lord are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light” (2 SAMUEL 22:29). David sang these words after God gave him victory in battle. Rivals from both inside and outside his own nation had been stalking him, intending to kill him. Because of his relationship with God, David didn’t cower in the shadows. He moved forward into enemy confrontations with the confidence that comes from God’s presence. With God helping him, he could see things clearly so he could make good decisions for himself, his troops, and his nation.

The darkness David mentioned in his song likely involved fear of weakness, defeat, and death. Many of us live with similar worries, which produce anxiety and stress. When the darkness presses in on us, we can find peace because we know God is with us too. The divine flame of the Holy Spirit lives in us to light our path until we meet Jesus face to face. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

미국에서 내가 살고 있는 주의 겨울은 영하의 기온과 쉴 새 없이 내리는 눈으로 가히 혹독하다 할 수 있습니다. 지독히 추운 어느 날, 눈을 치우면서 삽질을 천 번쯤 한 것 같았을때, 우편배달부가 배달 중에 잠시 멈추더니 눈 치우는 일이 어떠냐고 물었습니다. 나는 겨울이 싫고 많은 눈에 진절머리가 난다고 했습니다. 그러고는 그가 하는 일도 이런 지독한 날씨에는 분명 꽤나 힘들 것 같다고 한 마디 했습니다. 그랬더니 그가 이렇게 대답했습니다. “예, 그렇긴 하지만 적어도 제겐 일이 있잖아요. 일이 없는 사람들이 많아요. 일할 수 있다는 것에 감사하지요.”

나는 우편배달부의 감사하는 태도를 보며 마치 내가 큰 죄를 지은 것 같은 느낌이 들었습니다. 삶의 환경이 불편할때, 우리는 감사해야 할 모든 것들을 얼마나 쉽게 지나쳐 버리는지 모릅니다.

바울은 골로새의 성도들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그리스도의 평강이 너희 마음을 주장하게 하라 너희는 평강을 위하여 한 몸으로 부르심을 받았나니 너희는 또한 감사하는 자가 되라”(골로새서 3:15). 그는 데살로니가 교인들에게도 이렇게 썼습니다. “범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라”(데살로니가전서 5:18).

정말 힘들고 고통스러운 이 시대에도 우리는 하나님의 평강을 알아 그 평강이 우리 마음을 다스리게 할 수 있습니다. 그 평강 안에서 그리스도를 통해 주어진 모든 것이 다시 생각나게 될 것입니다. 그럼으로써 우리는 진정으로 감사할 수 있습니다.

Attitude of Gratitude

In my state in the US, the winters can be brutal, with sub-zero temperatures and never-ending snow. One bitterly cold day, as I shoveled snow for what seemed like the thousandth time, our postman paused in his rounds to ask how I was doing. I told him that I disliked winter and was weary of all the heavy snow. I then commented that his job must be pretty rough during these extreme weather conditions. He responded, “Yeah, but at least I have a job. A lot of people don’t. I’m thankful to be working.”

I have to admit that I felt quite convicted by his attitude of gratitude. How easily we can lose sight of everything we have to be thankful for when the circumstances of life become unpleasant.

Paul told the followers of Christ at Colossae, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” (COLOSSIANS 3:15). He wrote to the Thessalonians, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:18).

Even in our times of genuine struggle and pain, we can know God’s peace and permit it to rule our hearts. And in that peace, we’ll find reminders of all that we’ve been given in Christ. In that, we can truly be thankful. - BILL CROWDER

베풀어주신 이를 잊지 말라

크리스마스가 코앞에 다가왔는데도 아이들은 감사하는 마음이 별로 없었습니다. 엄마는 누구나 그런 생각에 빠지기 쉽다는 것을 알고 있었지만, 그녀의 아이들은 마음속에 좀 더 좋은 생각을 가지기를 원했습니다. 그래서 온 집안을 두루 돌아다니며 전기 스위치와 찬장, 냉장고 문, 세탁기, 빨래 건조기, 수도꼭지 같은 것에 나비모양의 빨간 리본을 달았습니다. 리본 하나하나 마다 손으로 이런 글을 써붙였습니다. “하나님이 주시는 선물들을 우리가 잘 모르고 지나쳐 버리는 경우가 많아서 이렇게 리본을 달아놓았어. 하나님은 우리 가족에게 너무 좋으신 분이란다. 그 선물들이 어디에서 왔는지 우리 잊지 말자.”

신명기 6장을 보면 이스라엘 민족의 미래는 이미 있는 땅들을 정복하는 일과 관련 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그들은 자신들이 건설하지 않은 크고 번창한 도시에 들어가(10절) 남들이 좋은 것들로 가득 채워놓은 집들을 차지하고 남이 파놓은 우물과 심어놓은 포도원과 감람나무를 취했습니다(11절). 이 모든 축복은 오직 하나의 근원, 즉 “네 하나님 여호와”(10절)에게서 나왔음을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님이 사랑하는 마음으로 그 모든 것들을 주셨기에, 모세는 백성들이 주의하여 잊지 않도록 다짐해두고 싶었습니다(12절).

살다보면 어떤 때는 잊어버리기 쉽습니다. 그러나 우리의 모든 복의 근원이 되시는 하나님을 잊지 않도록 합시다.

Don’t Forget the Giver

It was just before Christmas, and her kids were having a difficult time with gratitude. She knew how easy it was to slip into that kind of thinking, but she also knew she wanted something better for the hearts of her children. So she went through the house and placed red bows on light switches, the pantry and refrigerator doors, the washing machine and dryer, and the water faucets. With each bow there was a handwritten note: “Some of the gifts God gives us are easy to overlook, so I’ve put a bow on them. He is so good to our family. Let’s not forget where the gifts come from.”

In Deuteronomy 6, we see that the future of the nation of Israel involved the conquest of existing places. So they would move into large flourishing cities they did not build (V. 10), occupy houses filled with good things they didn’t provide, and benefit from wells and vineyards and olive groves they didn’t dig or plant (V. 11). All these blessings could be easily traced back to a single source—“the Lord your God” (V. 10). And while God lovingly provided these things and more, Moses wanted to make sure the people were careful not to forget (V. 12).

During certain seasons of life it’s easy to forget. But let’s not lose sight of God’s goodness, the source of all our blessings. - JOHN BLASE

하늘에서 내려온 선물

옛 이야기에 따르면 니콜라스(기원후 270년에 출생)라는 이름의 남자가 너무 가난해서 세 딸을 먹여 살릴 수 없고 앞으로 닥쳐올 딸들의 결혼 때 해줄 수 있는 것은 더더욱 없었던 어떤 아버지에 대한 이야기를 들었습니다. 니콜라스는 아무도 모르게 그 아버지를 도와주고 싶어서 금 한 자루를 그 집 열린 창문 안으로 던져 넣었는데 그것이 벽난로에서 말리고 있던 양말인지 신발 속으로 들어갔습니다. 성 니콜라스로 알려지게 된 이 사람은 훗날 산타클로스의 기원이 되었습니다.

위에서 내려온 그 선물 이야기를 들었을 때 나는 아버지 하나님을 생각 했습니다. 그분은 사랑과 연민의 마음으로 기적적인 탄생을 통해 가장 위대한 선물인 그분의 아들을 이 땅에 보내주셨습니다. 마태복음에 따르면 한 처녀가 임신하여 낳을 아들이 장차 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다”(1:23)는 뜻의 임마누엘이라 불릴 것이라는 구약성경의 예언이 예수님으로 말미암아 이루어진 것입니다.

니콜라스의 선물이 아름다운 것이었다면 예수님이라는 선물은 얼마나 더 놀라운 것인지요. 예수님은 하늘나라를 떠나 사람이 되시고 죽었다가 다시 살아나셔서 지금 우리와 함께 계시는 하나님이십니다. 주님은 우리가 아파하고 슬퍼할 때 위로하시고, 낙담할 때 용기를 주시며, 미혹 당할 때에 우리에게 진실을 드러내 보여주십니다.

Gifts from Above

According to an old story, a man named Nicholas (born in ad 270) heard about a father who was so poor that he couldn’t feed his three daughters, much less provide for their future marriages. Wanting to assist the father, but hoping to keep his help a secret, Nicholas threw a bag of gold through an open window, which landed in a sock or shoe drying on the hearth. That man was known as St. Nicholas, who later became the inspiration for Santa Claus.

When I heard that story of a gift coming down from above, I thought of God the Father, who out of love and compassion sent to earth the greatest gift, His Son, through a miraculous birth. According to Matthew’s gospel, Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy that a virgin would conceive and give birth to a son whom they would call Immanuel, meaning “God with us” (1:23).

As lovely as Nicholas’s gift was, how much more amazing is the gift of Jesus. He left heaven to become a man, died and rose again, and is God living with us. He brings us comfort when we’re hurting and sad; He encourages us when we feel downhearted; He reveals the truth to us when we might be deceived. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

자진해서 베푸는 친절

젊은 엄마 혼자서 아이들을 데리고 비행기에 올랐습니다. 그 엄마는 발버둥치며 울어대는 세 살 배기 딸아이를 안간힘을 다해 달랬습니다. 그러더니 이제는 4개월 된 사내아이가 배가 고파 울기 시작했습니다.

엄마 제시카가 딸아이의 안전벨트를 매어줄 동안 옆자리에 앉아 있던 승객이 선뜻 아기를 안아주겠다고 했습니다. 그런 다음 그 승객은 자신의 젊은 아빠 시절을 떠올리면서 엄마가 아기를 먹일 동안 세 살짜리 아이와 색칠놀이를 했습니다. 그 승객은 다음 연결 비행기에서도 필요하다면 도와주겠다고 했습니다.

제시카는 이렇게 회고했습니다. “그때 하나님의 손길에 완전히 감동받았어요. 우리 옆에 누구라도 앉을 수 있었지만, 그때 우리는 지금껏 가장 좋은 사람 옆에 앉았었어요.”

사무엘하 9장에서 우리는 내가 말하는 ‘자진해서 베푸는 친절’ 의 또 다른 예를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 사울 왕과 그의 아들 요나단이 죽자, 일부에서는 다윗이 왕위 계승 경쟁자는 누구든 다 제거해버릴 거라고 예상했습니다. 그러나 다윗은 오히려 이렇게 물었습니다. “사울의 집에 아직도 남은 사람이 없느냐 내가 그 사람에게 하나님의 은총을 베풀고자 하노라”(3절). 그런 다음 요나단의 아들 므비보셋이 다윗 앞에 불려오자 다윗은 그가 받을 유산을 물려받게 해주고 그 때부터 그를 자신의 친아들처럼 대해주며 왕의 상에서 같이 식사하게 하는 온정을 베풀어줍니다(11절).

우리 또한 넘치는 하나님의 은혜를 받은 자들로서 다른 사람들에게 자진해서 친절을 베풀 수 있는 기회를 찾게 되기를 간절히 바랍니다(갈라디아서 6:10).

Intentional Kindness

Boarding a plane alone with her children, a young mom tried desperately to calm her three-year-old daughter who began kicking and crying. Then her hungry fourmonth-old son also began to wail.

A traveler seated next to her quickly offered to hold the baby while Jessica got her daughter buckled in. Then the traveler—recalling his own days as a young dad—began coloring with the toddler while Jessica fed her infant. And on the next connecting flight, the same man offered to assist again if needed.

Jessica recalled, “I [was] blown away by God’s hand in this. [We] could have been placed next to anyone, but we were seated next to one of the nicest men I have ever met.”

In 2 Samuel 9, we read of another example of what I call intentional kindness. After King Saul and his son Jonathan had been killed, some expected David to kill off any competition to his claim for the throne. Instead, he asked, “Is there no one still
alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” (V. 3). Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, was then brought to David who restored his inheritance and warmly invited him to share his table from then on—just as if he were his own son (V. 11).

As beneficiaries of the immense kindness of God, may we look for opportunities to show intentional kindness toward others (GALATIANS 6:10). CINDY HESS KASPER
