경계의 원

아프리카 가젤 영양들은 대초원에서 쉬는 동안 본능적으로 “경계의 원”을 만듭니다. 이들은 여러 마리가 그룹을 형성하여 각기 바깥쪽을 향해 있으면서 조금씩 다른 방향을 주시합니다. 이렇게 하여 이들은 지평선을 360도로 완전히 살필 수 있고, 위험한 것들이 다가올 때나 어떤 상황이 발생할 때 서로 소통할 수 있습니다.

그 무리의 구성원들은 자신만을 위해 살피는 것이 아니라 서로가 서로를 돌봐줍니다. 예수님을 따르는 자들을 위한 하나님의 지혜도 그와 같습니다. 성경은 이렇게 권면합니다. “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며 모이기를 폐하는 어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 하지 말고” (히브리서 10:24-25).

히브리서 저자에 의하면 그리스도인들은 결코 혼자서 무슨 일을 하려고 하지 않았습니다. 우리는 함께 할 때 더 강해집니다. 우리는 “서로 격려하며”(25절, 새번역), “우리로 하여금 하나님께 받는 위로로써 모든 환난 중에 있는 자들을 능히 위로하며”(고린도후서 1:4), “우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾는”(베드로전서 5:8) 원수 마귀의 발호에 대비해 경계를 게을리 하지 않게 서로 도와줄 수 있습니다.

우리가 서로를 돌보는 목표는 단순한 생존 그 이상의 것입니다. 그것은 우리를 예수님 같이 되게 하는 것입니다. 이 세상에서 사랑이 많고 유능한 하나님의 종이 되게 하며, 다가올 하나님 나라에 대한 소망을 다 같이 확신하며 기다리는 사람이 되게 하는 것입니다. 우리 모두는 격려가 필요합니다. 하나님은 우리가 함께 사랑으로 그분께 가까이 나아갈 때 우리가 서로를 도울 수 있도록 우리를 도와주실 것입니다.

Alert Circles

African gazelles instinctively form “alert circles” while resting on the savannah. They gather in groups with each animal facing outward in a slightly different direction. This enables them to scan the horizon a full 360 degrees and to communicate about approaching dangers or opportunities.

Instead of looking out only for themselves, the members of the group take care of one another. This is also God’s wisdom for followers of Jesus. The Bible encourages us, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together” (HEBREWS 10:24–25).

Christians were never intended to go it alone, explains the writer of Hebrews. Together we are stronger. We’re able to “[encourage] one another” (V. 25), to “comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:4), and to help each other stay alert to the efforts of our enemy the devil, who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 PETER 5:8).

The goal of our care for each other is so much more than survival. It’s to make us like Jesus: loving and effective servants of God in this world—people who together look forward confidently to the hope of His coming kingdom. All of us need encouragement, and God will help us help each other as together we draw near to Him in love. - JAMES BANKS

진정한 친구

고등학교 때 나에게는 “어떤 때만 친구”가 하나 있었습니다. 우리는 교회에서 “단짝 친구”였고, 가끔은 학교 밖에서 만나 어울리기도 했습니다. 그런데 학교에 오면 이야기가 달랐습니다. 그 친구는 혼자서 나를 만나면 인사를 하기도 했는데 그것도 주위에 아무도 없을 때만 그렇게 했습니다. 그것을 알고부터 나는 학교에서는 그 아이를 거의 아는 체 하지 않았습니다. 우리 우정의 한계를 알았기 때문입니다.

어쩌면 일방적이거나 제한적인 실망스러운 우정 관계 때문에 누구나 아픔을 겪어보았을 것입니다. 그러나 다른 종류의 우정도 있습니다. 그것은 모든 경계선을 넘어서는 우정입니다. 인생 여정을 함께 나누기로 다짐한 비슷한 마음을 가진 사람들 간의 우정 말입니다.

다윗과 요나단이 그런 친구였습니다. 요나단은 다윗의 “마음과 하나가” 되어 그를 “자기 생명 같이” 사랑했습니다(사무엘상 18:1-3). 요나단은 아버지 사울이 죽으면 그의 뒤를 이어 통치권을 이어받을
수도 있었지만, 하나님이 정해놓으신 후임자 다윗에게 충성을 다했습니다. 그리고 다윗을 죽이려는 사울의 두 번의 음모에서 그가 벗어날 수 있도록 도와주기까지 했습니다(19:1-6; 20:1-42).

온갖 역경에도 불구하고 요나단과 다윗은 끝까지 친구로 남았습니다. 그들은 “친구는 사랑이 끊어지지 않는다”는 잠언 17장 17절 말씀의 참 모습을 보여주었습니다. 두 사람의 신실한 우정은 하나님과 우리 사이의 사랑의 관계를 엿볼 수 있게 해줍니다 (요한복음 3:16; 15:15). 그들의 우정과 같은 우정들을 보면서 우리는 하나님의 사랑을 더 깊이 이해할 수 있습니다.

True Friends

In high school, I had a “sometimes friend.” We were “buddies” at our church, and we occasionally hung out together outside of school. But at school, it was a different story. If she met me by herself, she might say hello; but only if no one else was around. Realizing this, I rarely tried to gain her attention within school walls. I knew the limits of our friendship.

We’ve probably all experienced the pain of disappointingly one-sided or narrow friendships. But there’s another kind of friendship—one that extends beyond all boundaries. It’s the kind of friendship we have with kindred spirits who are committed to sharing life’s journey with us.

David and Jonathan were such friends. Jonathan was “one in spirit” with David and loved him “as himself” (1 SAMUEL 18:1–3). Although Jonathan would have been next in line to rule after his father Saul’s death, he was loyal to David, God’s chosen replacement. Jonathan even helped David to evade two of Saul’s plots to kill him (19:1–6; 20:1–42).

Despite all odds, Jonathan and David remained friends—pointing to the truth of Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loves at all times.” Their faithful friendship also gives us a glimpse of the
loving relationship God has with us (JOHN 3:16; 15:15). Through friendships like theirs, our understanding of God’s love is deepened. - ALYSON KIEDA

우리의 축복과 하나님의 사랑

2015년, 한 여인이 죽은 남편의 컴퓨터를 재활용센터에 버렸습니다. 그 컴퓨터는 1976년에 만들어진 것이었데, 더 중요한 것은 ‘언제’ 만들어졌느냐 보다 ‘누가’ 만들었느냐 였습니다. 그것은 애플 회사의 설립자 스티브 잡스가 직접 제작한 200대 컴퓨터 중 하나였고, 그 가치가 대략 25만 달러나 되었습니다! 어떤 물건의 진정한 가치를 안다는 것은 누가 그것을 만들었는지를 안다는 것을 의미할 때가 종종 있습니다.

우리를 만드신 분이 바로 하나님 이라는 사실을 알면 우리가 그분께 얼마나 소중한가를 알게 됩니다(창세기 1:27). 시편 136편에는 그분의 백성인 고대 이스라엘 민족이 어떻게 애굽의 포로생활에서 벗어나(11-12절), 어떻게 광야를 지났으며 (16절), 어떻게 가나안 땅에 새로운 터전을 마련하게 되었는지(21-22절) 중요한 순간들이 기록되어 있습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 역사의 한 시기가 언급될 때마다 매번 “그 인자하심이 영원함이로다”라는 후렴 부분이 따라 붙습니다. 이 반복되는 후렴은 이스라엘 백성들에게 그들이 겪은 일들이 우연히 일어난 역사상의 사건들이 아니라는 점을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 하나님께서 그 매 순간들을 일일이 조율해주심으로써 그분이 만드신 백성들에게 그분의 영원한 사랑을 보여주신 것입니다.

나 역시 일하시는 하나님과 그분의 친절하신 방식이 드러나는 순간들을 너무나 자주 그냥 지나쳐 버려서, 온갖 온전한 선물이 다 나를 만드시고 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지로부터 온다는 사실을 (야고보서 1:17) 못 알아볼 때가 많습니다. 우리 모두 우리 삶의 모든 축복들이 우리를 향한 하나님의 영원한 사랑에 맞닿아 있음을 알 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Our Blessings, His Love

In 2015, a woman discarded her deceased husband’s computer at a recycling center—a computer that had been made in 1976. But more important than when it had been made was who made it. It was one of 200 computers hand built by Apple founder Steve Jobs, and was worth an estimated quarter of a million dollars! Sometimes knowing the true worth of something means knowing who made it.

Knowing that it’s God who made us shows us how valuable we are to Him (GENESIS 1:27). Psalm 136 catalogs key moments of His people—ancient Israel: how they had been freed from captivity in Egypt (VV. 11–12), journeyed through the wilderness (V. 16), and were given a new home in Canaan (VV. 21–22). But each time a moment of Israel’s history is mentioned, it’s paired with this repeated refrain: “His love endures forever.” This refrain reminded the people of Israel that their experiences weren’t random historical events. Each moment had been orchestrated by God and was a reflection of His enduring love for those He’d made.

Far too often, I allow moments that show God at work and His kind ways to simply pass by, failing to recognize that every perfect gift comes from my heavenly Father (JAMES 1:17) who made me and loves me. May you and I learn to connect every blessing in our lives to God’s enduring love for us. - PETER CHIN

하나님께 맡깁니다

네이트와 셔릴린이 뉴욕에 갔을 때 ‘오마카세’ 식당을 즐겨 찾았습니다. ‘오마카세’는 “당신에게 맡기겠습니다”라는 뜻의 일본말인데, 말하자면 손님이 주방장에게 그들의 식사메뉴를 선택하게 한다는 의미입니다. 이런 식의 식사를 처음 해보는 손님에게는 좀 모험일지 모르겠지만, 손님들은 주방장이 골라 만들어주는 음식을 매우 좋아합니다.

이런 발상을 우리가 기도로 하나님께 구하는 태도로 연결시켜 볼 수 있습니다. 말하자면 “하나님께 맡기겠습니다.”라는 것입니다. 예수님이 기도하시려고 “종종 한적한 곳으로 물러가시는” 것을 보고 (누가복음 5:16) 제자들은 어느 날 예수님께 기도하는 법을 가르쳐달라고 했습니다. 예수님은 일상의 필요한 것과 용서하는 것, 그리고 유혹에서 벗어나는 것 등을 구하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 주님의 기도 중에는 내어맡기는 태도도 들어있었습니다. “(하나님의) 뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것 같이 땅에서도 이루어지이다”(마태복음 6:10).

하나님은 우리 마음을 헤아려 베풀어주시기를 기뻐하시므로 우리에게 필요한 무엇이든 하나님께 쏟아 부으며 간구할 수 있습니다. 그러나 인간이라는 유한한 존재인 우리는 무엇이 가장 좋은지 잘 모를 때가 많습니다. 그러므로 그분께 내어맡기고 겸손한 마음으로 구하는 것만이 올바른 방법입니다. 하나님은 신실하시고 우리에게 좋은 것을 골라 준비해주신다는 것을 믿고, 우리의 기도 응답을 하나님께 맡겨야 합니다.

It’s Up to God

Nate and Sherilyn enjoyed their stop at an omakase restaurant while visiting New York City. Omakase is a Japanese word that translates, “I will leave it up to you,” which means customers at such restaurants let the chef choose their meal. Even though it was their first time to try this type of cuisine and it sounded risky, they loved the food the chef chose and prepared for them.

That idea could carry over to our attitude toward God with our prayer requests: “I will leave it up to You.” The disciples saw that Jesus “often withdrew to lonely places” to pray (LUKE 5:16), so they asked Him one day to teach them how to pray. He told them to ask for their daily needs, forgiveness, and the way out of temptation. Part of His response also suggested an attitude of surrender: “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:10).

We can pour out our needs to God because He wants to hear what’s on our hearts—and He delights to give. But being human and finite, we don’t always know what’s best, so it only makes sense to ask with a humble spirit, in submission to Him. We can leave the answer to Him, confident that He’s trustworthy and will choose to prepare what’s good for us. - ANNE CETAS

낙원의 용암

주위는 온통 적막합니다. 다만 뿜어 나오는 용암만이 쉿 소리와 함께 촉수를 서서히 뻗으며 열대 지역의 나뭇잎이 떨어져 있는 주변을 조금씩 침범해가고 있을 뿐입니다. 주민들은 놀란 채 어두운 표정으로 서서 지켜보고 있습니다. 주민들은 보통 이곳을 “낙원”이라고 부르고 있었습니다. 그러나 이날 하와이 푸나 지역의 불의 균열을 보면서 누구나 하나님께서 이 군도를 도저히 억제할 수 없는 화산의 힘을 빌려 만드셨다는 사실을 다시 떠올렸습니다.

고대 이스라엘 사람들 역시 어떻게 억제할 수 없는 위력을 만난 일이 있었습니다. 다윗 왕이 언약궤를 다시 찾아오자(사무엘하 6:1-4) 사람들이 축제 처럼 기뻐했는데(5절), 어떤 사람이 그 언약궤를 흔들리지 않도록 꽉 잡자 그 자리에서 죽고 말았던 것입니다(6-7절).

이 사건에서 우리는 하나님을 화산 처럼 예측할 수 없는 분으로 생각하기 쉽습니다. 마치 파괴하시기 위해 창조하신 것처럼 말입니다. 그러나 하나님이 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님을 예배하기 위해 따로 구분해놓으신 것들을 어떻게 다루어야 하는지에 대해 구체적으로 지시하셨다는 것을 기억하면 도움이 됩니다(민수기 4장 참조). 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님께 가까이 갈 수 있는 특권이 있었습니다. 그러나 그들에게 하나님의 임재는 너무나 위압적이어서 하나님께 함부로 다가갈 수 없었습니다.

히브리서 12장은 하나님께서 모세에게 십계명을 주셨던 “불이 붙은” 산에 대해 다시 언급하고 있습니다. 누구나 그 산을 두려워했습니다(18-21절). 그러나 히브리서 저자는 그 장면을 이 말씀으로 대비시킵니다. “너희가 이른 곳은......새 언약의 중보자이신 예수니라”(22-24절). 하나님의 아들이신 예수님은 우리가 마음대로는 못해도 사랑이 많으신 하나님 아버지께 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 길을 만들어주셨습니다.

Lava in Paradise

All is quiet, save for slowly stretching tentacles of hissing lava nipping at the edges of the tropical foliage. Residents stand grim-faced yet amazed. Most days they call this “paradise.” On this day, however, the fiery fissures in Hawaii’s Puna district reminded everyone that God forged these islands via untamable volcanic power.

The ancient Israelites encountered an untamable power too. When King David recaptured the ark of the covenant (2 SAMUEL 6:1–4), a celebration broke out (V. 5)—until a man died suddenly when he grabbed hold of the ark to steady it (VV. 6–7).

This may tempt us to think of God as being as unpredictable as a volcano, just as likely to create as He is to destroy. However, it helps to remember that God had given Israel specific instructions for how to handle the things set apart for worshiping Him (SEE NUMBERS 4). Israel had the privilege of drawing near to God, but His presence was too overwhelming for them to approach Him carelessly.

Hebrews 12 recalls a mountain “burning with fire,” where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. That mountain terrified everyone (VV. 18–21). But the writer contrasts that scene with this: “You have come to . . . Jesus the mediator of a new covenant” (VV. 22–24). Jesus—God’s very Son—made the way for us to draw near to His untamable yet loving Father. - TIM GUSTAFSON

오래 견디는 기도

“기도는 죽지 않습니다.” 이 괄목할만한 말은 기도에 관한 고전적인 글들을 많이 써서 여러 세대에 걸쳐 독자들에게 영감을 주었던 E.M. 바운즈(1835-1913)의 말입니다. 그는 우리가 드리는 기도의 능력과 오래 견디는 특성에 관한 견해를 이렇게 이어갑니다. “기도하는 입술은 죽으면 닫힐 수 있고, 기도를 느끼는 심장은 그 박동을 멈출 수 있습니다. 그러나 기도는 하나님 앞에 살아 있고 하나님의 마음에 자리 잡으며, 기도드리는 사람들보다 더 오래 살아남습니다. 기도는 한 세대보다, 한 시대보다, 그리고 한 세상보다 더 오래도록 살아남게 됩니다.”

Enduring Prayers

“Prayers are deathless.” These are the attention-grabbing words of E. M. Bounds (1835–1913), whose classic writings on prayer have inspired people for generations. His comments about the power and enduring nature of our prayers continue with these words: “The lips that uttered them may be closed to death, the heart that felt them may have ceased to beat, but the prayers live before God, and God’s heart is set on them and prayers outlive the lives of those who uttered them; they outlive a generation, outlive an age, out-live a world.”

Have you ever wondered if your prayers—particularly those birthed out of difficulty, pain, and suffering—ever make it to God? The insightful words from Bounds remind us of the significance of our prayers and so does Revelation 8:1–5. The setting is heaven (V. 1), the throne room of God and the control center of the universe. Angelic attendants stand in God’s presence (V. 2) and one angel, like the priests of old, offers Him incense along with the prayers of “all God’s people” (V. 3). How eye-opening and encouraging to have this picture of the prayers offered on earth rising to God in heaven (V. 4). When we think that our prayers may have been lost in transit or forgot-
ten, what we see here comforts us and compels us to persist in our praying, for our prayers are precious to God! - ARTHUR JACKSON

중학교 2학년 학생들의 첫 크로스컨트리 경주대회였습니다. 그러나 그 여학생은 달리고 싶지 않았습니다. 이 대회를 위해 준비는 해왔지만, 잘 하지 못할까봐 두려웠습니다. 그럼에도 이 학생은 다른 아이들과 함께 경주를 출발했습니다. 이윽고 다른 학생들이 하나 둘씩 2마일(약 3.2킬로미터) 코스를 다 뛰고 결승선을 통과했습니다. 바로 그 마지못해 뛴 학생만 제외하고 말입니다. 마침내, 자기 딸의 완주를 기다리고 있던 그 학생의 엄마가 멀리서 외롭게 뛰고 있는 딸의 모습을 보고는 기진맥진한 선수를 위로하려고 결승선으로 갔습니다. 그런데 이 어린 선수는 결승선에서 자기 엄마를 보고 오히려 “정말 대단했어요!”라고 탄성을 질렀습니다.

꼴찌로 경주를 마친 것이 왜 대단한 것일 까요? 그것은 ‘무엇을 해냈다는 것입니다!’

그 여학생은 어떤 어려운 일에 도전했고 마침내 그 일을 해낸 것입니다! 성경은 열심히 일하는 것과 부지런한 것을 존중합니다. 우리는 종종 인내와 노력을 요구하는 스포츠나 음악, 그 밖의 다른 일들을 통해 그 이유를 알 수 있습니다.

잠언 12장 24절은 “부지런한 자의 손은 사람을 다스리게 되어도 게으른 자는 부림을 받느니라”고 말합니다. 그리고 뒤에 가서 “모든 수고에는 이익이 있어도 입술의 말은 궁핍을 이룰 뿐이니라”(14:23) 고 말합니다. 약속이 아닌 이 지혜로운 법칙들을 잘 따를 때 우리는 하나님을 잘 섬길 수 있습니다.

우리를 위한 하나님의 계획 속에는 일하는 것이 항상 포함되어 있습니다. 타락하기 이전에도 아담은 “[에덴동산을] 경작하며 지키게” 되어 있었습니다(창세기 2:15). 그리고 우리는 어떤 노력을 하든지 “[우리] 마음을 다하여” 해야 합니다(골로새서 3:23). 우리 다 같이 하나님께서 주시는 힘으로 일하고 그 결과는 하나님께 맡기도록 합시다.

That Was Awesome!

It was the seventh-grader’s first cross-country meet, but she didn’t want to run. Although she’d been preparing for the event, she was afraid of doing poorly. Still, she started the race with everyone else. Later, one by one the other runners finished the two-mile course and crossed the finish line—everyone except the reluctant runner. Finally, her mom, who was watching for her daughter to finish, saw a lone figure in the distance. The mother went to the finish line, preparing to comfort a distraught competitor. Instead, when the young runner saw her mom, she exclaimed, “That was awesome!”

What can be awesome about finishing last? Finishing !

The girl had tried something difficult and had accomplished it! Scripture honors hard work and diligence, a concept often learned through sports or music or other things that require perseverance and effort.

Proverbs 12:24 says, “Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor.” And later we read, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty” (14:23). These wise principles—not promises—can help us serve God well.

God’s plan for us always included work. Even before the fall, Adam was to “work [the Garden] and take care of it” (GENESIS 2:15). And any effort we make should be done “with all [our] heart” (COLOSSIANS 3:23). Let’s work in the strength He gives us—and leave the results to Him. - DAVE BRANON

“하늘만큼 땅만큼 사랑해”

세 살 난 조카딸 제나의 재롱 중에 들을 때마다 마음이 녹아내리는 말이 있습니다. 자기가 좋아하는 (‘정말’ 좋아하는) 것, 예를 들어 바나나 크림파이를 먹거나, 트램펄린(쇠틀에 넓은 그물망이 스프링으로 연결되어 있어서 그 위에 올라가 점프를 할 수 있는 운동기구–역주)에서 뜀뛰기를 하거나, 아니면 원반던지기 같은 것을 할 때면 조카는 언제나 이렇게 외칩니다. “나 이거 정말 좋아해. 하늘만큼 땅만큼!” (“하늘만큼 땅만큼”을 외칠 때는 두 팔을 한껏 휘젔습니다.)

이따금 이런 생각이 듭니다. ‘내가 저 정도로 무언가를 좋아해 본 적이 언제 있었나? 전혀 주저하지도 겁먹지도 않고 말이야!’

요한은 반복해서 “하나님은 사랑 이시라”고 썼습니다(요한1서 4 : 8 , 1 6 ). 어쩌면 우리의 분노나 두려움, 부끄러움 같은 것이 아니라 바로 하나님의 사랑이 현실세계의 가장 깊숙한 토대라는 진리를 우리 성인들이 ‘인식하기’ 어렵기 때문에 그렇게 한지도 모르겠습니다. 세상은 우리를 여러 진영으로 나눕니다. 우리가 무엇을 가장 두려워하는 지에 근거하여, 그리고 우리가 선호하는 세계관에 도전하는 목소리를 무시하거나 악으로 매도하면서 우리가 자주 참여하는 모든 일에 근거하여 그렇게 합니다.

그러나 기만행위와 힘겨루기가 난무하는 상황에서도(5-6절) 하나님은 사랑이시라는 진실은 계속 남아 어둠을 밝히는 빛이 되어 우리를 겸손과 신뢰와 사랑으로 나아가는 길로 인도해줍니다(1:7-9; 3:18). 비록 그 빛으로 그 어떤 고통스런 사실이 드러날지라도 우리는 변함없이 사랑받게 되리라는 것을 알 수 있습니다(4:10,18; 로마서 8:1).

제나가 몸을 숙여 내 귀에 대고 “나 이모 사랑해. ‘하늘만큼 땅만큼’!”이라고 하면 나도 “나도 ‘너를’ 하늘만큼 땅만큼 사랑해!” 라고 속삭여줍니다. 그러면서 나는 내가 매순간 한없는 사랑과 은혜 가운데 있다는 사실을 떠올릴 수 있어 너무 감사합니다.

“Love You—Whole World”

My three-year old niece, Jenna, has an expression that never fails to melt my heart. When she loves something ( really loves it), be it banana cream pie, jumping on the trampoline, or playing Frisbee, she’ll proclaim, “I love it—whole world!” (”whole world” accompanied with a dramatic sweep of her arms).

Sometimes I wonder, When’s the last time I’ve dared to love like that? With nothing held back, completely unafraid?

“God is love,” John wrote, repeatedly (1 JOHN 4:8, 16), perhaps because the truth that God’s love—not our anger, fear, or shame—is the deepest foundation of reality, is hard for us grown-ups to “get.” The world divides us into camps based on what we’re most afraid of—and all too often we join in, ignoring or villainizing the voices that challenge our preferred vision of reality.

Yet amid the deception and power struggles (VV. 5–6), the truth of God’s love remains, a light that shines in the darkness, inviting us to learn the path of humility, trust, and love (1:7–9; 3:18). For no matter what painful truths the light uncovers, we can know that we’ll still be loved (4:10, 18; ROMANS 8:1).

절대 희망을 포기하지 말라

의사가 내 친구에게 암 진단 결과를 얘기해 주면서 주변을 정리하는 게 좋겠다고 조언했습니다. 그 친구는 나와 전화통화를 하면서 남편과 어린 아이들을 걱정하며 흐느껴 울었습니다. 나는 이 친구의 다급한 기도제목을 주위 친구들과 함께 나누었습니다. 그러나 그 친구가 만난 다른 의사가 절대 희망을 포기하지 말라고 하면서 자기 의료진이 최선을 다하겠다고 약속했다는 말을 듣고 우리는 정말 기뻤습니다. 다른 날보다 견디기가 더 힘든 날도 있었지만, 친구는 자신에게 좋지 않은 일보다는 하나님께 집중했습니다. 친구는 결코 포기하지 않았습니다.

친구의 인내하는 믿음을 보고 나는 누가복음 8장에 나오는 매우 절망적인 상황에 처한 여인이 생각났습니다. 12년간 이어진 질병으로 고통과 실망과 소외감으로 지쳐버린 이 여인은 예수님 뒤로 다가가 손을 뻗어 주님의 옷자락을 잡았습니다. 자기의 상황이 아무리 불가능해 보여도 예수님은 다른 사람이 할 수 없는 일을 하실 수 있다고 믿고 끝까지 희망을 놓지 않았던 이 여인은 그의 믿음의 행동으로 그 자리에서 바로 병이 나았습니다(43-44절).

우리는 끝날 것 같지 않은 고통, 희망이 없어 보이는 상황, 참을 수 없을 것 같은 기다림 등을 겪을 수 있습니다. 그리고 역경이 사방으로 쌓여가는 순간들을 견뎌야 할 때도 있을 것입니다. 어쩌면 그리스도를 계속 믿는 중에도 간절히 바라는 치유를 경험하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그럴 때에도 예수님은 우리가 주님을 신뢰하여 절대 희망을 포기하지 말고, 언제나 하실 수 있고 언제나 신뢰할 수 있으며 언제나 가까이 계시는 주님께 계속 나아오라고 권하고 계십니다.

Never Give Up Hope

When my friend received a diagnosis of cancer, the doctor advised her to get her affairs in order. She called me, sobbing, worried about her husband and young children. I shared her urgent prayer request with our mutual friends. We rejoiced when a second doctor encouraged her to never give up hope and confirmed his team would do all they could to help. Though some days were harder than others, she focused on God instead of the odds stacked against her. She never gave up.

My friend’s persevering faith reminds me of the desperate woman in Luke 8. Weary from twelve years of ongoing suffering, disappointment, and isolation, she approached Jesus from behind and stretched her hand toward the hem of His robe. Her immediate healing followed her act of faith: persistently hoping . . . believing Jesus was able to do what others couldn’t . . . no matter how impossible her situation seemed (VV. 43–44).

We may experience pain that feels endless, situations that appear hopeless, or waiting that seems unbearable. We may endure moments when the odds against us are stacked high and wide. We may not experience the healing we long for as we continue trusting Christ. But even then, Jesus invites us to keep reaching for Him, to trust Him and never give up hope, and to believe He is always able, always trustworthy, and always within reach. - XOCHITL DIXON

닥친 일을 바로 행하라

최근 언젠가 누군가를 꼭 도와주어야겠다고 느꼈지만 아무것도 하지 못한 채 지나쳐 버리고만 때가 있었습니까? ‘10초 규칙’이라는 책에서 저자 클레어 드 그라프는 하루하루의 느낌이 하나님께서 우리를 보다 깊은 영적인 삶, 곧 주님을 향한 사랑에 이끌린 순종의 삶으로 부르시는 한 가지 방법일 수도 있다고 말합니다. 이 ‘10초 규칙’은 “우리가 행하기를 예수님이 원하신다고 꽤 확신이 서면 그냥 그 일을 하되”, “마음이 바뀌기 전에” 즉시 행하라고 우리에게 권면합니다.

예수님은 “너희가 나를 사랑하면 나의 계명을 지키리라”(요한복음 14:15) 고 말씀하십니다. 그런데 우리는 이렇게 생각할 수도 있습니다. ‘나는 주님을 정말 사랑해. 하지만 어떻게 주님의 뜻을 확신하고 따라가지?’ 예수님은 그분의 지혜로 우리가 성경의 지혜를 더 잘 이해하고 더 잘 따를 수 있는 길을 마련해주셨습니다. 주님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니 그는 진리의 영이라”(16-17절). 우리가 하루 종일 경험하는 자극들에 제대로 반응하면서 예수님께 순종하고 “[주님의] 계명을 지킬”(15절) 수 있는 것도 바로 우리와 함께하시고 우리 안에 계시는 성령님의 역사하심 때문입니다(17절).

크고 작은 일에서, 성령님은 우리가 믿음으로 당당히 행함으로써 하나님을 높이고 그분과 다른 사람들을 향한 우리의 사랑을 드러내도록 우리 마음을 움직여 주십니다(21절).

Do the Next Thing

When was the last time you felt compelled to help someone, only to let the moment pass without a response? In The 10-Second Rule, Clare De Graaf suggests that daily impressions can be one of the ways God calls us to a deeper spiritual walk, a life of obedience prompted by love for Him. The 10-Second Rule encourages you to simply “do the next thing you’re reasonably certain Jesus wants you to do,” and to do it right away “before you change your mind.”

Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commands” (JOHN 14:15). We might think, I do love Him, but how can I be certain of His will and follow it? In His wisdom, Jesus has provided what we need to better understand and follow the wisdom found in the Bible. He once said, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and will be with you forever—the Spirit of truth” (VV. 16–17). It’s by the work of the Spirit, who is with us and in us, that we can learn to obey Jesus and “keep [His] commands” (V. 15)—responding to the promptings experienced throughout our day (V. 17).

In the big and little things, the Spirit motivates us to confidently do by faith what will honor God and reveal our love for Him and others (V. 21). - RUTH O’REILLY-SMITH
