하나로 엮어질 때

한 친구가 40년도 넘게 가지고 있던 실내 화초 하나를 내게 주었습니다. 화초는 내 키만 하였고 세 갈레의 가늘고 긴 줄기에 커다란 잎들이 나 있었습니다. 시간이 지나면서 잎들이 무거워져 줄기 세 개 모두가 굽어지면서 바닥을 향했습니다. 그래서 나는 화분 밑에 쐐기를 박고 햇빛을 받아 잎들이 위로 향하게 해서 잘못된 모양을 바로 잡으려고 화분을 창문 가까이 두었습니다.

화분을 받은 지 얼마 되지 않아 동네 어느 사무실의 대기실에서 똑같은 화초를 보았습니다. 그 화초 역시 가늘고 긴 세 줄기로 자라고 있었습니다. 그런데 그 세 줄기는 서로 엮어져 하나의 더 크고 견고한 줄기를 이루고 있었습니다. 그 화초는 아무런 지지대가 없이도 똑바로 서 있었습니다.

두 사람이 여러 해를 같은 “화분”에서 지내면서도 서로 떨어져 자라면 하나님께서 둘이 누리라고 주신 유익들을 조금 밖에 얻지 못하게 됩니다. 하지만 그 둘이 하나님과 함께 잘 엮어져 살아간다면 보다 더 큰 안정감과 친밀감을 얻게 되고 관계는 더 튼튼해질 것입니다. “세 겹줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라”(전도서 4:12).

화초처럼 결혼생활과 친구관계도 양육이 필요합니다. 그런 관계들을 잘 돌보기 위해서는 영적으로 화합하여 모든 중요한 관계들의 중심에 하나님이 계시도록 해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리가 서로 행복한 유대관계를 유지하는데 가장 필요한 사랑과 은혜를 끝없이 공급해주는 분이십니다.

Braided Together

A friend gave me a houseplant she’d owned for more than forty years. The plant was equal to my height, and it produced large leaves from three separate spindly trunks. Over time, the weight of the leaves had caused all three of the stalks to curve down toward the floor. To straighten them, I put a wedge under the plant’s pot and placed it near a window so the sunlight could draw the leaves upward and help cure its bad posture.

Shortly after receiving the plant, I saw one just like it in a waiting room at a local business. It also grew from three long skinny stalks, but they’d been braided together to form a larger, more solid core. This plant stood upright without any help.

Any two people may stay in the same “pot” for years, yet grow apart and experience fewer of the benefits God wants them to enjoy. When their lives are woven together with God, however, there is a greater sense of stability and closeness. Their relationship will grow stronger. “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (ECCLESIASTES 4:12).

Like houseplants, marriages and friendships require some nurturing. Tending to these relationships involves merging spiritually so that God is present at the center of each important bond. 그저 한 번 손을 댄 것뿐인데

그저 손을 댔을 뿐인데 콜린에게 큰 변화가 일어났습니다. 콜린은 몇 안 되는 팀원들과 자선활동을 준비하고 있었는데, 활동 장소가 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 적대감을 보이는 지역이라 스트레스가 점점 쌓여갔습니다. 그래서 어느 팀원에게 그의 불안감에 대해 얘기하자 그 친구는 하던 일을 멈추더니 그의 어깨에 손을 얹고 격려의 말 몇 마디를 해주었습니다. 콜린은 지금 그때 잠깐 만져주었던 것이 하나님께서 그와 함께 하신다는 단순한 진리를 강하게 상기시켜 주는 전환점이 되었다고 여기고 있습니다.

예수님과 가까운 친구이자 제자였던 요한은 복음을 전했다는 이유로 황량한 밧모섬으로 유배되었을 때 “나팔 소리 같은 큰 음성”(요한계시록 1:10)을 들었습니다. 그 놀라운 일 후에 주님이 환상으로 나타나시자 요한은 “그의 발 앞에 엎드러져 죽은 자 같이 되었습니다.” 그러나 요한은 그 무서운 순간에도 위로와 용기를 얻고 이렇게 기록했습니다. “그가 오른손을 내게 얹고 이르시되 두려워하지 말라 나는 처음이요 마지막이니”(17절).

하나님은 우리를 편안하게 머물던 곳에서 데리고 나와 새로운 것들을 보여주시고 우리의 지경을 넓히시며 우리가 자라도록 도와주십니다. 또한 모든 상황을 헤쳐 나가도록 용기와 위로를 주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 시련을 당할 때 홀로 내버려두지 않으십니다. 그분은 만물을 다스리십니다. 우리는 그분 손 안에 있습니다.

Just a Touch

It was just a touch, but it made all the difference to Colin. As his small team was preparing to do charitable work in a region known for hostility to believers in Jesus, his stress level began to rise. When he shared his worries with a teammate, his friend stopped, placed his hand on his shoulder, and shared a few encouraging words with him. Colin now looks back on that brief touch as a turning point, a powerful reminder of the simple truth that God was with him.

John, the close friend and disciple of Jesus, had been banished to the desolate island of Patmos for preaching the gospel, when he heard “a loud voice like a trumpet” (REVELATION 1:10). That startling event was followed by a vision of the Lord Himself, and John “fell at his feet as though dead.” But in that frightening moment, he received comfort and courage. John wrote, “He placed his right hand on me and said, ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last’” (V. 17).

God takes us out of our comfort zone to show us new things, to stretch us, to help us grow. But He also brings the courage and comfort to go through every situation. He won’t leave us alone in our trials. He has everything under control. He has us in His hands. TIM GUSTAFSON

“이게 바로 나야”라는 강렬한 메시지의 노래는 P.T. 바넘의 생애와 그의 순회 서커스단을 대략적으로 다루어 크게 흥행한 뮤지컬 영화 ‘위대한 쇼맨’의 잊지 못할 주제곡입니다. 영화 속에서 사회규범을 따르지 못한다는 이유로 조롱당하고 학대당하는 인물들이 부르는 노래의 가사에서, 말을 사람을 죽이는 총알이나 상처를 남기는 칼과 같다고 묘사합니다.

이 노래가 굉장한 인기가 있었다는 것은 얼마나 많은 사람들이 말이라는 흉기에 의해 안 보이지만 실제로 받은 상처를 안고 살아가고 있는지를 말해 줍니다.

야고보는 우리의 말이 파괴적이고 오래 지속되는 해를 끼칠 위험이 있음을 알고, 혀를 “쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라”(야고보서 3:8)고 말하고 있습니다. 야고보는 이토록 강하게 비교를 하면서 성도들이 말의 엄청난 위력을 절실히 깨달아야 한다고 강조했습니다. 그는 더 나아가 어떤 때는 하나님을 찬양했다가 다음에는 하나님의 형상으로 지음 받은 사람들에게 해를 끼치는 모순에 대해서도 강조했습니다 (9-10절).

“이게 바로 나야”라는 노래도 성경이 말하는 대로 우리 모두가 영광스러운 존재임을 강조하면서, 비슷하게 언어폭력의 실상에 대해 도전하고 있습니다. 성경은 인간 각자에게 고유한 존엄성과 아름다움이 있다는 것을 분명히 말해주는데, 이는 우리의 겉모습이나 어떤 업적 때문이 아니라 우리 각자는 하나님께서 아름답게 지으신 독특한 작품이기 때문입니다(시편 139:14). 우리가 서로에게, 그리고 서로에 대해서 하는 말에는 이렇게 엄연한 사실을 다시 한 번 확실하게 해줄 수 있는 힘이 들어있습니다.

This Is Me

The powerful song “This Is Me” is an unforgettable show tune featured in The Greatest Showman , the smash movie musical loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum and his traveling circus. The lyrics, sung by characters in the film who’d suffered verbal taunts and abuse for failing to conform to societal norms, describe words as destructive bullets and knives that leave scars.

The song’s popularity points to how many people bear the invisible, but real, wounds caused by weaponized words.

James understood the potential danger of our words to cause destructive and long-lasting harm, calling the tongue “a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (JAMES 3:8). By using this surprisingly strong comparison, James emphasized the urgent need for believers to recognize the immense power of their words. Even more, he highlighted the inconsistency of praising God with one breath and then injuring people who are made in God’s image with the next (VV. 9–10).

The song “This Is Me” similarly challenges the truth of verbal attacks by insisting that we’re all glorious—a truth the Bible affirms. The Bible establishes the unique dignity and beauty of each human being, not because of outward appearance or anything we have done, but because we are each beautifully designed by God—His unique masterpieces (PSALM 139:14). And our words to each other and about each other have the power to reinforce that reassuring reality. LISA SAMRA

발에게 좋은 소식

“발 역사상 가장 편한 양말”이라는 광고를 보고 웃음이 나왔습니다. 그런 다음 광고하는 사람은 발에 좋다는 주장을 더 펴면서, 양말이 노숙자 임시 숙소에서 가장 많이 찾는 의류 품목이기 때문에 한 켤레가 판매될 때마다 회사가 어려운 사람들에게 한 켤레를 기부한다고 말했습니다.

예수님이 38년 동안이나 걸을 수 없었던 사람의 발을 고쳐주셨을 때 (요한복음 5:2-8) 그 사람의 얼굴에 번졌을 웃음을 상상해 보십시오. 이번에는 예수님이 아주 오랫동안 아무런 도움을 받지 못하고 살아온 사람의 발이나 마음을 고쳐주시는 것을 보고도 감동 받지 못하는 성전 관리들의 얼굴에 나타난 완전히 다른 표정을 상상해 보십시오. 관리들은 그 사람과 예수님이 안식일에 아무 일도 하면 안 된다는 율법을 어겼다고 비난했습니다(9-10,16-17절). 그들은 규칙을 보았지만 예수님은 거기서 자비가 필요한 사람을
보셨습니다.

이 때 그 사람은 새 발을 주신 분이 누구인지도 몰랐습니다. 나중에서야 그는 자기를 고치신 분이 예수님이라고 말할 수 있었습니다(13-15절). 바로 이 예수님이 그 후에 자신의 발을 나무에 못 박게 하시며, 고침 받은 그 사람과 우리 모두에게 몸도 생각도 마음도 다 망가져버린 인류 역사에 가장 좋은 소식을 전해주셨습니다.

Good News for Feet

The ad brought a smile to my face: “The most comfortable socks in the history of feet.” Then, extending its claim of good news for feet even further, the advertiser said that because socks remain the most requested clothing item at homeless shelters, for every pair of socks purchased the company would donate a pair to someone in need.

Imagine the smile when Jesus healed the feet of a man who hadn’t been able to walk for thirty-eight years (JOHN 5:2–8). Now imagine the opposite look on the faces of the temple officials who weren’t impressed by Jesus’s care for the feet or heart of someone who had gone without help for so long. They accused the man and Jesus of breaking a religious law that allows no work to be done on the Sabbath (VV. 9–10, 16–17). They saw rules where Jesus saw the need for mercy.

At this point the man didn’t even know who had given him new feet. Only later would he be able to say that it was Jesus who had made him well (VV. 13–15)—the same Jesus who would allow His own feet to be nailed to a tree to offer that man—and us—the best news in the history of broken bodies, minds, and hearts. 사랑의 향연

‘바베트의 향연’이라는 덴마크 영화를 보면 프랑스인 난민 한 사람이 어느 해안가 마을에 나타납니다. 그곳 공동체 마을의 종교지도자인 나이 든 두 자매가 이 난민 여성을 집으로 데려갑니다. 그로부터 14년간 이 여성 바베트는 그 집 도우미로 일을 합니다. 많은 돈을 모은 바베트는 캐비어와 부풀린 반죽에 메추라기를 넣어 구운 것과 그 외에 여러 가지 음식으로 푸짐하게 차린 프랑스 식사에 열두 명의 신도를 초대합니다.

식사가 진행되면서 손님들은 마음이 풀어져 어떤 이들은 용서하는 마음이 생기고, 어떤 이들은 사랑하는 마음이 다시 들고, 또 어떤 이들은 자신들이 목격했던 기적들과 어린 시절에 배웠던 진리들을 떠올립니다. 그들은 말합니다. “그때 배운 것들 기억나나요?” “자녀들아, 서로 사랑하라.” 식사가 끝나자 바베트는 집주인 두 자매에게 자기가 가진 모든 것을 이번 음식 만드는데 썼다고 말했습니다. 그녀는 친구들이 식사를 하면서 마음의 문을 열 수 있도록 파리에서 인정받던 요리사였던 과거로 돌아갈 수 있는 기회를 포함한 모든 것을 주었던 것입니다.

예수님은 낯선 사람과 종으로 이 땅에 나타나셔서 우리의 영적 굶주림이 채워질 수 있도록 모든 것을 주셨습니다. 요한복음에서 예수님은 그의 말씀을 듣는 자들에게 그들의 조상이 광야에서 굶주리며 헤맬 때 하나님께서 메추라기와 떡을 주셨다는 것을 상기시켜 주십니다(출애굽기 16장). 그 음식은 한시적으로만 채워줬지만 예수님은 그를 “생명의 떡”으로 받아들이는 사람들은 “영생하리라” 고 약속해주십니다(요한복음 6:48,51). 예수님의 희생으로 우리의 영적 갈구가 채워진 것입니다.

A Feast of Love

In the Danish film Babette’s Feast, a French refugee appears in a coastal village. Two elderly sisters, leaders of the community’s religious life, take her in, and for fourteen years Babette works as their housekeeper. When Babette comes into a large sum of money, she invites the congregation of twelve to join her for an extravagant French meal of caviar, quail in puff pastry, and more.

As they move from one course to the next, the guests relax; some find forgiveness, some find love rekindled, and some begin recalling miracles they’d witnessed and truths they’d learned in childhood. “Remember what we were taught?” they say. “Little children, love one another.” When the meal ends, Babette reveals to the sisters that she spent all she had on the food. She gave everything—including any chance of returning to her old life as an acclaimed chef in Paris—so that her friends, eating, might feel their hearts open.

Jesus appeared on earth as a stranger and servant, and He gave everything so that our spiritual hunger might be satisfied. In John’s gospel, He reminds His listeners that when their ancestors wandered hungry in the wilderness, God provided quail and bread (EXODUS 16). That food satisfied for a time, but Jesus promises that those who accept Him as the “bread of life” will “live forever” (JOHN 6:48, 51). His sacrifice satisfies our spiritual cravings. AMY PETERSON

덜 중요한 사람들이 아닙니다

제1차 세계대전 후 우드로우 윌슨 미국 대통령은 세계에서 가장 강력한 지도자 중의 한 사람으로 인정받았습니다. 그러나 1919년에 그가 치명적인 뇌졸중을 겪고 난 후, 어떤 현안에 관심을 가져야 하는지 결정하는 등 그의 모든 일을 거의 도맡아 처리해준 사람이 바로 그의 아내였다는 사실을 아는 사람은 별로 없었습니다. 사실 현대 역사가들은 잠시 동안 실질적으로 미국 대통령 역할을 한 사람은 이디스 윌슨이었다고 생각하고 있습니다.

초 대 교 회 지 도 자 들 의 이 름 을 대어보라고 하면 대부분은 베드로, 바울, 디모데와 같이 그 은사가 많이 기록되어있는 몇몇 인물들을 꼽을 것입니다. 그런데 바울은 로마서 16장에서 남자, 여자, 노예, 유대인, 이방인 등, 여러 모로 교회생활에 기여한 다양한 배경의 사람들로 거의 사십 명을 열거하고 있습니다.

그리고 바울은 이들을 교회 안에서 덜 중요한 사람들이 아니라 가장 존경받아야할 사람들로 여겼습니다. 바울은 이들을 사도들 가운데서도 뛰어난 사람들(7절), 예수님을 섬기는 데 있어서 칭찬받아야 할 사람들이라고 말하고 있습니다.

많은 사람들이 자신이 너무 평범해서 교회의 지도자가 될 수 없다고 느낍니다. 그런데 사실은 우리 한 사람 한 사람에게는 남을 섬기고 도와줄 수 있는 은사들이 있습니다. 우리 모두 하나님의 능력으로 우리의 은사를 사용하여 주님을 높여드립시다!

Not Second Rate

After the conclusion of the First World War, US President Woodrow Wilson was recognized as one of the most powerful leaders on earth. But few knew that after a devastating stroke in 1919, it was his wife who managed nearly all of his affairs, determining which issues should be brought to his attention. In fact, modern historians believe that for a short while, it was really Edith Wilson who served as the president of the United States.

If asked to name the leaders of the early church, most of us would list Peter, Paul, and Timothy as a handful possessing well-documented gifts. But in Romans 16, Paul lists nearly forty people of diverse backgrounds—men, women, slaves, Jews, and gentiles—all of whom contributed to the life of the church in diverse ways.

And far from considering them second-rate members of the church, it’s clear that Paul held these people in the highest regard. He describes them as outstanding among the apostles (V. 7)—people to be celebrated for their service for Jesus.

Many of us feel that we’re too ordinary to be leaders in the church. But the truth is that each of us has gifts that can be used to serve and help others. In God’s strength, let’s use our gifts to His honor! PETER CHIN

강철과 벨벳

시인 칼 샌드버그는 아브라함 링컨 전 미국 대통령에 대해 다음과 같이 썼습니다. “인류 역사에 그와 같이 강철이면서 동시에 부드러운 벨벳 같았던 사람은 찾아보기 힘들다......가슴과 머리 안에는 무서운 폭풍이 들어있었지만 동시에 이와 반대되는 말할 수 없이 완전한 평화를 지닌 그런 사람이었다.” “강철과 벨벳”이란 표현은 링컨이 대통령의 권력을 가졌지만, 한편으로 자유를 갈망하는 한 사람 한 사람에 대한 깊은 관심을 균형 있게 가졌다는 뜻이었습니다.

역사 전체를 통틀어 강함과 부드러움, 힘과 연민의 마음이 완벽히 균형을 이루었던 단 한 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 예수 그리스도이십니다. 요한복음 8장에서 예수님이 한 죄지은 여인을 정죄하는 종교지도자들과 마주했을 때 강철과 벨벳의 면모를 동시에 보여주셨습니다. 예수님은 살기등등한 군중들의 요구를 막아서시면서 바로 그들에게 비판의 시각을 돌리시며 강철의 면모를 보여주셨습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라”(7절). 그러신 다음 여인에게는 다음과 같은 말씀으로 부드러운 벨벳의 연민을 보여주셨습니다. “나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라”(11절).

우리가 사람들을 대할 때 예수님의 “강철과 벨벳”을 보여준다면, 우리를 예수님 닮게 만들려고 일하시는 하나님을 드러낼 수 있습니다. 우리는 벨벳 같은 자비와 강철 같은 정의, 이 두 가지에 목말라 있는 세상에 예수님의 마음을 보여줄 수 있습니다.

Steel and Velvet

Poet Carl Sandburg wrote of former US president Abraham Lincoln, “Not often in the story of mankind does a man arrive on earth who is both steel and velvet, . . . who holds in his heart and mind the paradox of terrible storm and peace unspeakable and perfect.” “Steel and velvet” described how Lincoln balanced the power of his office with concern for individuals longing for freedom.

Only one person in all history perfectly balanced strength and gentleness, power and compassion. That man is Jesus Christ. In John 8, when confronted by the religious leaders to condemn a guilty woman, Jesus displayed both steel and velvet. He showed steel by withstanding the demands of a bloodthirsty mob, instead turning their critical eyes upon themselves. He said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (V. 7). Then Jesus modeled the velvet of compassion by telling the woman, “Neither do I condemn you . . . . Go now and leave your life of sin” (V. 11).

Reflecting His “steel and velvet” in our own responses to others can reveal the Father’s work of conforming us to be like Jesus. We can show His heart to a world hungry for both the velvet of mercy and the steel of justice. BILL CROWDER

우리가 찬양할 때

2014년 아홉 살 난 윌리가 집 앞마당에서 유괴 당했을 때 아이는 ‘찬양해’라는 그가 가장 좋아하는 복음성가를 계속 불렀습니다. 세 시간 동안 차에 실려 돌아다니는 힘든 상황 속에서도 윌리는 입 다물라는 범인의 말에 아랑곳하지 않았습니다. 결국 범인은 윌리를 아무런 해도 입히지 않은 채로 차 밖으로 내보냈습니다. 훗날 윌리는 그 대치상황에 대해 설명하면서, 자기가 두려운 마음이 믿음으로 바뀌어가고 있는 동안 범인은 노래 소리에 마음이 흔들리는 것 같아 보였다고 말했습니다.

그 무서운 상황에서 보여준 윌리의 대처는 바울과 실라가 겪었던 일을 생각나게 합니다. 매를 맞고 투옥된 그들이 “기도하고 하나님을 찬송하자 다른 죄수들이 듣고 있었습니다. 그때 갑자기 큰 지진이 일어나 집터가 흔들리고 감방 문이 모두 열리며 죄수들을 묶은 쇠고랑이 다 풀어졌습니다”(사도행전 16:25-26, 현대인의 성경).

이 엄청난 능력이 나타난 것을 목격한 간수는 바울과 실라의 하나님을 믿고 자신의 가족 모두 함께 세례를 받았습니다(27-34절). 찬양의 길을 통해 그날 밤 육체적인 사슬과 영적인 사슬 모두가 끊어진 것입니다.

우리는 바울과 실라나 윌리의 경우처럼 생생하고도 극적인 구출을 항상 경험하지는 못할 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그의 백성들의 찬양에 응답하신다는 것을 우리는 압니다! 그분이 움직이시면 사슬이 떨어져나갑니다.

When We Praise

When nine-year-old Willie was abducted from his front yard in 2014, he sang his favorite gospel song Every Praise over and over again. During the three-hour ordeal, Willie ignored the kidnapper’s repeated orders to keep silent as they drove around. Eventually, the kidnapper let Willie out of the car unharmed. Later, Willie described the encounter, saying that while he felt his fear give way to faith, the abductor seemed agitated by the song.

Willie’s response to his dire situation is reminiscent of the experience shared by Paul and Silas. After being flogged and thrown into jail, they reacted by “praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose” (ACTS 16:25–26).

Upon witnessing this awesome demonstration of power, the jailer believed in the God of Paul and Silas, and his entire household was baptized along with him (VV. 27–34). Through the avenue of praise, both physical and spiritual chains were broken that night.

We may not always experience a visibly dramatic rescue like Paul and Silas, or like Willie. But we know that God responds to the praises of His people! When He moves, chains fall apart. REMI OYEDELE

진리, 쓸까요 달까요?

일 년 가까이 코에 있는 반점이 없어지지 않아 의사를 찾아갔습니다. 며칠 후에 조직검사 결과가 나왔는데 내가 듣고 싶지 않은 내용이었습니다. 피부암이었습니다. 이 암은 수술이 가능하고 생명에도 지장이 없는 것이지만 정말 견디기 어려웠습니다.

하나님은 에스겔에게 쓴 약, 곧 비통과 비애의 말이 기록된 두루마리를 삼키라고 명하셨습니다(에스겔 2:10; 3:1-2). 그는 “그 두루마리를 그의 배에 채워서” 하나님이 보시기에 “얼굴이 뻔뻔하고 마음이 굳은” 이스라엘 백성들에게 그 내용을 전해야 했습니다(2:4). 징계의 말로 가득 찬 그 두루마리는 맛이 쓴 약과 같을 거라고 생각되겠지만 에스겔은 그것이 그의 입에 “꿀같이 달았다”고 묘사하고 있습니다(3:3).

에스겔은 하나님의 징계의 맛을 터득했던 것 같습니다. 하나님의 질책을 피해야 할 것으로 여기지 않았던 에스겔은 영혼에 유익한 것은 “단맛이 난다”는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑으로 훈육하시고 바로잡아주시며, 그분을 영화롭게 하고 기쁘게 해드리는 삶을 살 수 있도록 도와주십니다.

삼키기에 쓴맛이 나는 진리가 있는가 하면 단맛이 나는 것도 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 얼마나 많이 사랑하시는지 기억한다면 그분의 진리는 꿀맛이 날 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 우리가 남을 용서하고 험담을 삼가며 부당한 처사를 견디게 해주는 지혜와 능력을 주는 등, 우리의 유익을 위해 주어졌습니다. 하나님, 하나님의 지혜가 참으로 단맛 나는 충고임을 알게 해주소서!

Truth: Bitter or Sweet?

I’d had the spot on my nose for the better part of a year when I went to the doctor. The biopsy results came back days later with words I didn’t want to hear: skin cancer. Though the cancer was operable and not life-threatening, it was a bitter pill to swallow.

God commanded Ezekiel to swallow a bitter pill—a scroll containing words of lament and woe (EZEKIEL 2:10; 3:1–2). He was “to fill [his] stomach with it” and share the words with the people of Israel, whom God considered “obstinate and stubborn” (2:4). One would expect a scroll filled with correction to taste like a bitter pill. Yet Ezekiel describes it being “as sweet as honey” in his mouth (3:3).

Ezekiel seems to have acquired a taste for God’s correction. Instead of viewing His rebuke as something to avoid, Ezekiel recognized that what is good for the soul is “sweet.” God instructs and corrects us with lovingkindness, helping us live in a way that honors and pleases Him.

Some truths are bitter pills to swallow while others taste sweet. If we remember how much God loves us, His truth will taste more like honey. His words are given to us for our good, providing wisdom and strength to forgive others, refrain from gossip, and bear up under mistreatment. Help us, God, to recognize your wisdom as the sweet counsel it truly is! KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

조용한 삶을 찾아

“너는 커서 무엇이 되고 싶니?” 우리가 어렸을 때, 그리고 어른이 되어서도 이따금 들었던 질문입니다. 이 질문은 호기심에서 비롯된 것이라 그 대답은 종종 미래의 꿈에 대한 말로 들립니다. 나의 대답은 시간이 지나면서 변했습니다. 카우보이로 시작해서 트럭 운전사로, 군인을 거쳐 대학에 들어가서는 의사가 되기로 했습니다. 그러나 누가 나에게 “조용한 삶”을 추구하는 것에 대해 얘기해주거나 내가 의식적으로 생각해본 적은 한 번도 없었습니다.

그러나 바울이 데살로니가교인들 에게 말한 것이 바로 그 점이었습니다. 우선 그는 서로 사랑하되 하나님의 가족은 특히 더 사랑하라고 권고했습니다(데살로니가전서 4:10). 그런 다음 특별한 어떤 일을 시작할 때에도 적용할 수 있는 일반적인 충고를 했습니다. “조용하게 살기를 힘쓰십시오”(11절, 새번역). 바울은 여기서 정확히 무엇을 말하려 했던 것일까요? 그는 “자기 일에 전념하고 자기 손으로 일하여” 외인들에 대해 품위 있게 살고 아무에게도 신세지지 말라고 분명하게 말했습니다(11-12절, 새번역). 우리는 자녀들이 타고난 재능이나 어떤 열정을 추구할 때 그것을 방해하고 싶지는 않겠지만, 무엇을 하더라도 조용한 마음으로 하라고 격려할 수는 있을 것입니다.

우리가 살고 있는 이 세상을 생각해볼 때 ‘야심 있다’는 말과 ‘조용하다’는 말은 크게 다르게 들립니다. 그러나 성경에는 항상 서로 관련이 있기 때문에 보다 조용히 살아간다는 것이 어떤 것인지 깊이 생각해보아야 합니다.

Finding a Quiet Life

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” We all heard that question as children and sometimes even as adults. The question is born in curiosity, and the answer is often heard as an indication of ambition. My answers morphed over the years, starting with a cowboy, then a truck driver, followed by a soldier, and I entered college set on becoming a doctor. However, I can’t recall one time that someone suggested or I consciously considered pursuing “a quiet life.”

Yet that’s exactly what Paul told the Thessalonians. First, he urged them to love one another and all of God’s family even more (1 THESSALONIANS 4:10). Then he gave them a general admonition that would cover whatever specific plow they put their hand to. “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life” (V. 11). Now what did Paul mean by that exactly? He clarified: “You should mind your own business and work with your hands” so outsiders respect you and you’re not a burden on anyone (VV. 11–12). We don’t want to discourage children from pursuing their giftedness or passions but maybe we could encourage them that whatever they choose to do, they do with a quiet spirit.

Considering the world we live in, the words ambitious and quiet couldn’t seem further apart. But the Scriptures are always relevant, so perhaps we should consider what it might look like to begin living quieter. JOHN BLASE
