잘못 생각한 안전지대

우리 집 개 루퍼트가 강아지였을 때 집 밖에 나가기를 너무 무서워해서 나는 그를 억지로 끌고 공원에 가곤 했습니다. 어느 날 개를 데리고 공원에 갔었는데 아무 생각 없이 끈을 놓아버렸더니, 루퍼트는 자신이 안전지대라고 생각하고 있는 우리 집을 향해 ‘전력으로 뛰어 가버렸습니다.’

그 일로 나는 비행기에서 만났던 한 남자가 떠올랐습니다. 그 사람은 비행기가 활주로를 달리며 이륙 준비를 할 때 나에게 양해를 구하며 말했습니다. “나는 비행 중에 술에 취할 겁니다.” “그런데 그렇게 되기를 별로 바라는 것 같지 않네요.” “맞아요. 취하고 싶지 않아요. 그런데 언제나 술을 마시게 됩니다.” 그는 취했고, 비행기에서 내릴 때 그의 아내가 그를 부축하다가 냄새가 나자 그를 밀쳐버리는 모습이 아주 안쓰럽게 보였습니다. 그의 안전지대는 술을 마시는 것이었지만 그것은 결코 안전지대가 아니었습니다.

예수님은 “하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔으니 회개하고 복음을 믿으라”(마가복음 1:15)는 말씀으로 사역을 시작하셨습니다. “회개” 는 방향을 반대로 돌리는 것입니다. “하나님의 나라”는 하나님께서 우리의 삶을 사랑으로 통치하시는 것입니다. 예수님은 우리가 궁지에 몰리거나 두려움과 중독에 빠지지 않고, 새로운 삶과 자유를 향해 사랑으로 인도하시는 하나님의 통치를 받을 수 있다고 말씀하십니다.

지금 루퍼트는 즐겁게 짖으며 공원으로 달려갑니다. 비행기에서 만난 그 남자도 잘못 생각한 안전지대를 버리고 루퍼트처럼 기쁨과 자유를 얻게 되기를 기도합니다.

False Places of Safety

When our dog Rupert was a puppy, he was so afraid of going outside I’d have to drag him to the park. After getting him there one day, I foolishly let him off his leash. He sprinted home, back to his place of safety.

That experience reminded me of a man I met on a plane, who began apologizing to me as we taxied down the runway. “I’m going to get drunk on this flight,” he said. “It sounds like you don’t want to,” I replied. “I don’t,” he said, “but I always run back to the wine.” He got drunk, and the saddest part was watching his wife embrace him when he got off the plane, smell his breath, then push him away. Drink was his place of safety, but it was no safe place at all.

Jesus began His mission with the words, “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (MARK 1:15). “Repent” means to reverse direction. The “kingdom of God” is His loving rule over our lives. Instead of running to places that entrap us, or being ruled by fears and addictions, Jesus says we can be ruled by God Himself, who lovingly leads us to new life and freedom.

Today Rupert runs to the park barking with joy. I pray the man on the plane finds that same joy and freedom, leaving behind his false place of safety. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

하나님의 눈에 드는 자격

한 기술 자문회사가 컴퓨터 코드 한 줄 쓸 줄 모르고 사업 관련 지식도 거의 없는 나를 대학 졸업 후에 채용했습니다. 신입사원을 뽑는 면접 동안에 나는 회사가 업무경력에 비중을 높이 두지 않고, 그 대신 문제를 창의적으로
해결하고 판단을 잘 하며 팀 안에서 화합하며 일을 잘 하는 능력 같은, 개인적인 자질들을 더 중요시한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 회사는 원하는 사람을 찾기만 하면 필요한 기술은 가르칠수 있다고 판단한 것입니다.

노아도 방주를 짓는 일에 맞는 자격을 가진 사람이 아니었습니다. 그는 배 만드는 사람도 아니었고 목수도 아니었습니다. 그는 흙 묻은 옷과 쟁기 든 손이 잘 어울리는 농부였습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그 당시 세상의 악을 어떻게 다루어야 할지 결정하셨을때 노아가 돋보였습니다. 왜냐하면 “그가 하나님과 동행하였기” 때문입니다(창세기 6:9). 하나님은 주위의 부패에 굴하지 않고 옳은 일을 하는 힘을 지닌, 가르칠 수 있는 노아의 마음을 높이 평가하셨습니다.

하나님을 섬길 기회가 올 때, 우리는 그 일을 할 자격이 안 된다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 고맙게도 하나님은 꼭 우리의 기술을 중히 보시지 않습니다. 하나님은 우리의 성품과 그분에 대한 사랑, 그리고 그분을 신뢰하는 의지를 소중히 보십니다. 이런 자질들이 성령님의 도우심으로 우리 안에 개발되어갈 때, 하나님은 이 세상에 그분의 뜻을 이루시기 위해 크고 작은 일들에 우리를 사용하실 수 있습니다.

Qualified in God’s Eyes

A technology-consulting firm hired me after college although I couldn’t write a line of computer code and had very little business knowledge. During the interview process for my entry-level position, I learned that the company did not place high value on work experience. Instead, personal qualities such as the ability to solve problems creatively, exercise good judgment, and work well with a team were more important. The company assumed new workers could be taught the necessary skills as long as they were the kind of people the company was looking for.

Noah didn’t have the right resume for the job of constructing the ark—he wasn’t a boat builder or even a carpenter. Noah was a farmer, a man comfortable with dirt on his shirt and a plow in his hands. Yet as God decided how to deal with the evil in the world at that time, Noah stood out because “he walked faithfully with God” (GENESIS 6:9). God valued the teachableness of Noah’s heart—the strength to resist the corruption around him and to do what was right.

When opportunities to serve God come our way, we may not feel qualified for the work. Thankfully, God is not necessarily concerned with our skill set. He prizes our character, love for Him, and willingness to trust Him. When these qualities are being developed inside us by the Spirit, He can use us in big or small ways to accomplish His will on earth. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

나를 두른 방패

우리 교회의 재능 있는 예배담당 목사 폴이 서른한 살의 나이에 배 사고로 사망했을 때, 온 교회가 상실의 아픔을 겪었습니다. 사실 폴과 그의 아내 두론다에게 아픔은 낯설지 않았습니다. 유산으로 몇 명의 아이를 이미 잃었기 때문입니다. 이제 아이들의 작은 무덤 옆에 또 하나의 무덤이 생길 것입니다. 이 가정을 사랑하는 사람들은이 가정의 처참한 불행을 보며 마치 머리를 크게 한 대 맞은 것 같은 충격을 받았습니다.

다윗도 개인적으로나 가정적으로 몇 가지 불행을 겪었습니다. 시편 3편을 보면, 아들 압살롬의 반역 때문에 도저히 어떻게 해볼 수 없는 상황에 직면합니다. 그는 궁에 남아서 싸우지 않고 집과 왕좌를 버리고 도망가기로 결정했습니다(사무엘하 15:13-23). “많은” 사람들은 그가 하나님께 버림받았다고 생각했지만(시편 3:2), 다윗은 더 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 주님을 자신의 보호자로 생각했으며(3절), 그래서 주님께 구원을 요청하였습니다(4절). 두론다도 그랬습니다. 많은 사람들이 남편을 추모하러 왔을 때, 그녀는 슬픔 가운데서도 부드럽고 다정한 목소리로 힘을 다해 찬양을 불러 하나님을 향한 믿음을 표현했습니다.

A Shield Around Me

Our church experienced an agonizing loss when Paul, our gifted worship minister, died at the age of thirty-one in a boating accident. Paul and his wife, DuRhonda, were no strangers to pain; they had buried several children who hadn’t made it to term. Now there would be another grave near the small graves of these little ones. The life-crushing crisis this family experienced hit those who loved them like a knockout blow to the head.

David was no stranger to personal and family crises. In Psalm 3, he found himself overwhelmed because of the rebellion of his son Absalom. Rather than stay and fight, he chose to flee his home and throne (2 SAMUEL 15:13–23). Though “many” considered him forsaken by God (PSALM 3:2), David knew better; he saw the Lord as his protector (V. 3), and he called upon Him accordingly (V. 4). And so did DuRhonda. In the midst of her grief, when hundreds had gathered to remember her husband, she raised her soft, tender voice in a song that expressed confidence in God.

When doctors’ reports are not encouraging, when financial pressures won’t ease up, when efforts to reconcile relationships fail, when death has left those we cherish in its wake—may we too be strengthened to say, “But you, LORD , are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high” (V. 3). - ARTHUR JACKSON

점점 알아가기

“너 교환 학생으로 가게 됐어!” 열일곱 살이던 나는 독일에서 공부할 수 있게 되었다는 소식에 너무나 기뻤습니다. 그러나 출국까지 겨우 석 달 밖에 안 남은 데다 독일어로 수업을 들어본 적이 없었습니다.

그날 이후로 하루에 몇 시간씩 독일어를 공부하면서 손바닥에 단어를 써가며 외우는 등 벼락치기를 했습니다.

몇 달 후 나는 독일 학교에 가서 수업 시간에 앉아 보니 정말 낙담되었습니다. 무슨 말을 하는지 알아들을 수 없었기 때문입니다. 그날 선생님이 다음과 같은 지혜로운 조언을 해주셨습니다. “한 나라 말을 배우는 것은 마치 모래 언덕을 오르는 것과 같아. 가끔은 포기하고 싶을 때도 있을 테지만 계속 가다 보면 도달하게 될 거야.”

가끔씩 예수님의 제자로 자라가는 것이 무슨 의미인지 생각할 때마다 나는 그 선생님의 말씀이 생각납니다. 바울 사도도 “그 어떤 경우에도 적응할 수 있는 비결을 ‘배웠다.’”라고 회상했습니다. 바울에게도 개인적인 평안은 하루아침에 이루어지지 않았습니다. 그에게도 그것은 점점 자라가는 어떤 것이었습니다. 바울은 그의 성장 비결을 이렇게 말합니다. “내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 내가 모든 것을 할 수 있느니라”(빌립보서 4:12-13).

인생에서는 많은 도전을 만납니다. 그러나 우리가 “세상을 이기신”(요한복음 16:33) 주님께로 향할 때, 주님은 우리가 그 도전을 극복하도록 도우시는 신실하신 분일 뿐 아니라 그분과 가까워지는 것보다 더 중요한 일은 없다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 주님은 그분의 평화를 우리에게 주시고, 우리를 도와 신뢰할 수 있게 하시며, 우리를 강건케 하여 그분과 함께 먼 길을 걸어갈 수 있게 힘을 주십니다.

Growing to Know

“You’re going to be an exchange student!” I was seventeen and thrilled to hear I was approved to study in Germany. But it was only three months before my departure, and I had never taken a class in German.

The days that followed found me cramming—studying for hours and even writing words on my hands to memorize them.

Months later I was in a classroom in Germany, discouraged because I didn’t know more of the language. That day a teacher gave me wise advice. “Learning a language is like climbing a sand dune. Sometimes you feel like you’re not getting anywhere. But just keep going and you will.”

Sometimes I reflect on that insight when I consider what it means to grow as a follower of Jesus. The apostle Paul recalled, “ I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.” Even for Paul, personal peace didn’t happen overnight. It was something he grew into. Paul shares the secret of his progress: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (PHILIPPIANS 4:12–13).

Life has its challenges. But as we turn to the One who has “overcome the world” (JOHN 16:33), we discover not only that He’s faithful to get us through but also that nothing matters more than closeness to Him. He gives us His peace, helps us to trust, and empowers us to go the distance as we walk with Him. - JAMES BANKS

안토니오 스트라디바리(1644-1737)의 이름은 음악계에서 전설로 통합니다. 그가 만든 바이올린, 첼로, 비올라는 상당수가 장인의 솜씨와 맑고 깨끗한 음색으로 각기 고유의 이름을 가지고 있을 정도로 매우 귀하게 취급받습니다. 한 예로 바이올리니스트 요제프 요아힘(1831-1907)은 ‘메시아-살라브에 스트라디바리우스’라는 이름의 바이올린으로 연주한 후 “그 특별한 ‘메씨’ (연주한 바이올린의 애칭) 스트라드의 소리는 감미로움과 웅장함이 어우러져 내 기억 속에 자꾸 반복해서 떠오릅니다.” 라고 썼습니다.

그런데 스트라디바리우스의 명성과 소리도 훨씬 더 위대하신 만물의 근원 이신 분에 비하면 아무것도 아닙니다. 모세부터 예수님에 이르기까지, 신 중의 신이신 하나님께서는 자신의 이름이 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나다고 말씀하십시다. 하나님은 우리를 위해 자신의 지혜와 친히 하신 일들이 인정받고, 높임 받으며, 음악으로 찬송 받기를 원하십니다(출애굽기 6:1; 15:1-2).

그러나 고난당하는 사람들의 신음에 응답하여 힘을 주시는 것은 단지 시작에 불과했습니다. 십자가에 못 박혀 그 연약해진 손으로 언젠가 영원하고 무한한 가치의 유산을 남겨놓으리라고 누가 예상이나 했겠습니까? 우리를 얼마나 사랑하는지 보여주시려고 우리의 죄와 거부로 인한 수모를 지니고 돌아가신 주님의 그 이름을 찬양하는 소리가 얼마나 경이롭고 장엄한지 어느 누가 미리 알 수 있었겠습니까?

Name of Names

The name of Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) is legendary in the world of music. His violins, cellos, and violas are so treasured for their craftsmanship and clarity of sound that many have been given their own names. One of them, for instance, is known as the Messiah-Salabue Stradivarius. After violinist Joseph Joachim (1831–1907) played it, he wrote, “The sound of the Strad, that unique ‘Messie,’ turns up again and again in my memory, with its combined sweetness and grandeur.”

Even the name and sound of a Stradivarius, however, doesn’t deserve to be compared to the work of a far greater Source. From Moses to Jesus, the God of gods introduces Himself with a name above all names. For our sake, He wants the wisdom and work of His own hand to be recognized, valued, and celebrated with the sound of music (EXODUS 6:1; 15:1–2).

Yet this deliverance of strength in response to the groans of a troubled people was only a beginning. Who could have foreseen that, by the weakness of crucified hands, He would one day leave a legacy of eternal and infinite value? Could anyone have predicted the resulting wonder and grandeur of music sung in praise of the name of One who died—bearing the insult of our sin and rejection—to show how much He loves us? - MART DEHAAN

포도나무에 붙어서

병을 오래 앓고 있는 가족을 돌보며 유난히 음울했던 겨울을 보낸 엠마는 봄이 오자 영국 케임브리지 자기 집 근처의 벚나무 길을 걸으면서 매번 기운을 얻었습니다. 그 벚나무는 분홍색 꽃들 위로 흰 꽃이 활짝 피어 있었습니다. 솜씨 좋은 정원사가 그 나무 꼭대기에 흰 꽃 나뭇가지를 접목했던 것입니다. 엠마는 그 흔치 않은 나무를 지나며 예수님은 포도나무요 주님을 따르는 자들은 가지라고 하신 예수님의 말씀을 생각했습니다(요한복음 15:1-8).

예수님은 스스로 자신을 포도나무 라고 비유하시면서 구약시대 이스라엘 백성들에게 익숙했던 이미지를 말씀 하셨습니다. 구약성경에서 포도나무는 하나님의 백성을 상징합니다(시편 80:8-9; 호세아 10:1). 예수님은 이 상징성을 자신 에게 적용하여, 주님은 포도나무요 주님을 따르는 자들은 그에게 접붙인 가지라고 하셨습니다. 그래서 그들이 주님 안에 거하면 주님이 주시는 영양분과 힘을 얻고 열매를 맺게 된다는 것입니다(요한복음 15:5).

엠마는 가족을 돌보면서 자신이 예수님과 접붙여 있다는 사실을 상기시켜줄 무언가가 필요했었습니다. 분홍색 꽃 가운데 피어 있는 흰 꽃을 보면서, 자기도 포도나무이신 주님 안에 붙어있어서 주님을 통해 영양분을 받았다는 사실을 생생히 눈으로 보는 것 같았습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리도 포도나무에 붙어있는 가지처럼 예수님과 가까이 있다는 생각을 품을 때 우리의 믿음은 강해지고 풍성해집니다.

In the Vine

One spring after a particularly dreary winter during which she helped a family member through a long illness, Emma found encouragement each time she walked past a cherry tree near her home in Cambridge, England. Bursting out at the top of the pink blossoms grew blossoms of white. A clever gardener had grafted into the tree a branch of white flowers. When Emma passed the unusual tree, she thought of Jesus’s words about being the Vine and His followers the branches (JOHN 15:1–8).

By calling Himself the Vine, Jesus was speaking of an image familiar to the Israelites in the Old Testament, for there the vine symbolized God’s people (PSALM 80:8–9; HOSEA 10:1). Jesus extended this symbolism to Himself, saying He was the Vine and that His followers were grafted into Him as branches. And as they remained in Him, receiving His nourishment and strength, they would bear fruit (JOHN 15:5).

As Emma supported her family member, she needed the reminder that she was connected to Jesus. Seeing the white flowers among the pink ones gave her a visual prompt of the truth that as she remained in the Vine, she gained nourishment through Him.

When we who believe in Jesus embrace the idea of being as close to Him as a branch is to a vine, our faith is strengthened and enriched. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

작게 느껴질 때

많은 영화 평론가들은 데이비드 린의 ‘아라비아의 로렌스’ 를 역대 최고 영화 중의 하나로 꼽습니다. 끝없는 듯 펼쳐지는 아라비아 사막의 풍경을 배경으로 한 이 영화는 아카데미상 수상자인 스티븐 스필버그 감독을 비롯하여 한 세대의 영화작가들에게 큰 영향을 주었습니다. 스필버그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 ‘로렌스’를 처음 보고 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 그 영화는 나 자신의 존재를 작게 느끼게 했으며 지금도 그 영화를 생각하면 같은 기분을 느낍니다. 그것은 이 영화의 위대함의 한 측면에 불과합니다.”

나의 경우 나를 작게 느끼게 해주는 것은 창조의 광대함입니다. 대양을 바라 보거나 북극의 빙산 위를 비행하거나, 또는 밤하늘에 반짝이는 무수한 별들을 헤아릴 때 그렇습니다. 창조된 우주가 그토록 광대하다면, 그것을 말씀으로 지으신 창조주는 얼마나 더 위대하겠습니까!

다윗도 하나님의 위대하심과 우리의 보잘것없음을 느끼며 이렇게 말합니다. “사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까” (시편 8:4). 그러나 예수님은 우리에게 분명히 말씀하십니다. “공중의 새를 보라 심지도 않고 거두지도 않고 창고에 모아들이지도 아니하되 너희 하늘 아버지께서 기르시나니 너희는 이것들보다 귀하지 아니하냐” (마태복음 6:26).

나는 자신을 작고 하찮은 존재로 느낄지 모르지만, 하나님 아버지가 보시기에 나는 대단한 존재가치를 지녔습니다. 그 가치는 내가 십자가를 바라볼 때마다 증명됩니다. 주님이 나와 하나님과의 교제를 회복시키려고 기꺼이 치르신 대가야 말로 주님이 나를 얼마나 귀하게 여기시는지 증거가 됩니다.

Feeling Small

Many movie critics consider David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia one of the greatest films of all time. With its seemingly endless vistas of the Arabian deserts, it has influenced a generation of filmmakers—including Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg. “I was inspired the first time I saw Lawrence ,” said Spielberg. “It made me feel puny. It still makes me feel puny. And that’s one measure of its greatness.”

What makes me feel small is creation’s vastness—when I gaze at an ocean, fly over the polar ice cap, or survey a night sky sparkling with a billion stars. If the created universe is so expansive, how much greater must be the Creator who spoke it into being!

God’s greatness and our feelings of insignificance are echoed by David when he declares, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?” (PSALM 8:4 NLT ). But Jesus assures us, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (MATTHEW 6:26).

I may feel small and insignificant, but through my Father’s eyes, I have great worth—a worth that is proven every time I look at the cross. The price He was willing to pay to restore me to fellowship with Him is evidence of how He values me. - BILL CROWDER

돌아서서 뛰어라

부모님의 사랑 아래 자란 알리는 아름답고 영리하며 재주 많은 십대 아이였습니다. 그런데 고등학교 졸업 후 뭔가에 이끌려 헤로인에 손을 대었습니다. 알리 몸의 이상을 알아챈 부모는 딸이 마침내 헤로인에 중독되었다고 고백하자 그를 재활시설에 보냈습니다. 치료가 끝난 후, 알리의 부모는 딸에게 마약 하는 것에 대해 친구들에게 어떤 말을 해주겠냐고 물었습니다. 알리는 “그냥 돌아서서 뛰어.”라고 대답했습니다. 알리는 “그냥 안 한다고 말하는 것”으로는 충분치 않다고 강조했습니다.

그러나 안타깝게도 알리는 마약에 다시 빠져 과다 복용으로 스물두 살의 나이에 세상을 떠나고 말았습니다. 상심한 알리의 부모는 사람들이 자기 딸과 같은 비운을 겪지 않도록 지역 뉴스방송에 출연하여 청취자들에게 “알리를 생각하여 뛰어서” 마약이나 다른 위험들에 노출되는 상황으로부터 멀리 떨어질 것을 권유했습니다.

바울 사도는 그의 영적 아들 디모데에게 (그리고 우리에게) 악에서 달아날 것을 강력하게 권면했으며(디모데후서 2:22), 베드로 사도도 비슷하게 다음과 같이 경고했습니다. “너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니......너희는 믿음을 굳건하게 하여 그를 대적하라”(베드로전서 5:8-9).

유혹에서 자유로운 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 그래서 항상 피할 수는 없더라도, 종종 취할 수 있는 최선의 방법은 유혹의 상황에서 멀리 벗어나는 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 성경에 기반을 두고 기도로 강건해져서 하나님을 향한 굳센 믿음을 지닌다면 더 잘 대비할 수 있습니다. “믿음에 굳게 설” 때, 우리는 언제 하나님께로 돌아서서 달려가야 할지를 알게 될 것입니다.

Turn and Run

Ali was a beautiful, smart, and talented teenager with loving parents. But after high school something prompted her to try heroin. Her parents noticed changes in her and sent her to a rehabilitation facility after Ali eventually admitted the impact it was having on her. After treatment, they asked what she would tell her friends about trying drugs. Her advice: “Just turn and run.” She urged that “just saying no” wasn’t enough.

Tragically, Ali relapsed and died at age twenty-two of an overdose. In an attempt to keep others from the same fate, her heartbroken parents appeared on a local news program encouraging listeners to “run for Ali” by staying far from situations where they could be exposed to drugs and other dangers.

The apostle Paul urged his spiritual son Timothy (and us) to run from evil (2 TIMOTHY 2:22), and the apostle Peter likewise warned, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 PETER 5:8–9).

None of us is immune to temptation. And often the best thing to do is to steer clear of situations where we’ll be tempted—though they can’t always be avoided. But we can be better prepared by having a strong faith in God based in the Bible and strengthened through prayer. When we “[stand] firm in the faith” we’ll know when to turn and run to Him. - ALYSON KIEDA

물 그 이상의 것

아주 어린 시절 교회에 관한 기억 중 하나는 세례 중에 목사님이 예배당의 통로를 걸어가며 “너희가 받을 세례의 물을 기억하라.”고 말씀하신 것입니다. ‘물을 기억하라고? 물을 어떻게 기억하란 말이지?’ 나는 궁금했습니다. 그러고 나서 목사님은 사람마다 일일이 물을 뿌리며 세례를 베풀었는데, 그 일은 어린 나를 즐거우면서도 당황스럽게 만들었습니다.

왜 우리는 세례에 대해 생각해야 할까요? 사람이 세례를 받을 때 거기에는 물 이상의 훨씬 많은 의미가 있습니다. 세례는 예수님을 믿음으로 우리가 어떻게 그분으로 “옷 입게” 되는지를 상징합니다 (갈라디아서 3:27). 다시 말해, 세례는 우리가 주님께 속해 있고 주님이 우리 안에, 그리고 우리와 함께 사시게 된 것을 공표하는 일입니다.

그 설명으로도 충분하지 않은 듯, 그 구절은 그리스도의 옷을 입으면 우리의 정체성을 주님 안에서 찾을 수 있다고 말해줍니다. 우리가 바로 하나님의 자녀라는 것입니다(26절). 이처럼 하나님 앞에 우리가 의롭다 함을 얻은 것은 구약의 율법을 지킴으로 된 것이 아니라 믿음으로 된 것입니다(23-25절). 우리는 성별이나 문화, 신분에 의해 서로 차별 받지 않습니다. 우리는 그런 속박에서 자유롭게 되어 그리스도를 통해 하나가 되었으며, 이제는 주님의 소유가 되었습니다(29절).

이런 이유 때문에 우리는 세례와 세례가 의미하는 모든 것을 기억해야 합니다. 우리는 세례 행위 자체보다는 우리가 예수님께 속하고 하나님의 자녀가 되었다는 사실에 주목해야 합니다. 주님 안에 우리의 정체성과 미래, 영적인 자유가 있습니다.

More than Water

One of my earliest childhood memories of church was a pastor walking down the aisle, challenging us to “remember the waters of our baptism.” Remember the waters? I asked myself. How can you remember water? He then proceeded to splash everyone with water, which as a young child both delighted and confused me.

Why should we think about baptism? When a person is baptized, there’s so much more to it than water. Baptism symbolizes how through faith in Jesus, we’ve become “clothed” with Him (GALATIANS 3:27). Or in other words, it’s celebrating that we belong to Him and that He lives in and through us.

As if that weren’t significant enough, the passage tells us that if we’ve been clothed with Christ our identity is found in Him. We’re the very children of God (V. 26). As such, we’ve been made right with God by faith—not by following Old Testament law (VV. 23–25). We’re not divided against one another by gender, culture, and status. We’re set free and brought into unity through Christ and are now His own (V. 29).

So there are very good reasons to remember baptism and all it represents. We aren’t simply focusing on the act itself but that we belong to Jesus and have become children of God. Our identity, future, and spiritual freedom are found in Him. - PETER CHIN

악플러에게 응답하지 말라

“트롤에게 먹이를 주지 말라”는 말을 들어본 적이 있습니까? “트롤(악플러)”은 오늘날 디지털 시대의 새로운 문제로 뉴스나 소셜미디어 토론방에 분노를 일으키고 상처를 주는 글을 의도적으로 계속 올리는 온라인 사용자를
말합니다. 그런데 우리가 그런 댓글들에 대응하지 않는다면, 다시 말해 트롤(악플러)에게 “먹이를 주지” 않는다면 그들의 대화 방해는 오래가지 못할 것입니다.

생산적인 대화에 정말 관심 없는 사람들과 부딪히는 것이 물론 전혀 새로운 일은 아닙니다. “악플러에게 응답하지 말라”는 말은 거만하고 받아들이지 않는 사람과 언쟁하면 그들의 수준으로 떨어지고 만다는 것을 경고하는 잠언 26장 4절 말씀의 현대적인 표현입니다.

그러나......아무리 완고해 보이는 사람이라도 그 역시 존귀한 하나님의 형상을 지닌 인간입니다. 우리가 남을 쉽게 묵살하게 되면, ‘우리’도 거만해지고 하나님의 은혜를 받아들이지 않을 위험에 빠질 수 있습니다(마태복음 5:22 참조).

그런 사실은 왜 잠언 26장 5절 말씀이 정‘반대’의 지침을 주는지 어느 정도 설명이 됩니다. 어떤 상황에서도 다른 사람들에게 최선을 다해 사랑을 나타낼 수 있으려면 겸손과 기도로 하나님께 의지해야 하기 때문입니다(골로새서 4:5-6 참조). 우리가 발언해야 할 때가 있지만, 어떤 때는 침묵하는 것이 가장 좋습니다.

여전히 닫힌 마음으로 주님께 반항하던 우리를 가까이 이끌어주신 그 하나님이(로마서 5:6) 각자의 마음속에서 능력으로 역사하고 계시다는 사실을 알고 마음에 평안을 얻게 되기를 바랍니다.

Don’t Feed the Trolls

Ever heard the expression, “Don’t feed the trolls”? “Trolls” refers to a new problem in today’s digital world—online users who repeatedly post intentionally inflammatory and hurtful comments on news or social media discussion boards. But ignoring such comments—not “feeding” the trolls—makes it harder for them to derail a conversation.

Of course, it’s nothing new to encounter people who aren’t genuinely interested in productive conversation. “Don’t feed the trolls” could almost be a modern equivalent of Proverbs 26:4, which warns that arguing with an arrogant, unreceptive person risks stooping to their level.

And yet . . . even the most seemingly stubborn person is also a priceless image-bearer of God. If we’re quick to dismiss others, we may be the ones in danger of being arrogant and becoming unreceptive to God’s grace (SEE MATTHEW 5:22).

That might, in part, explain why Proverbs 26:5 offers the exact opposite guideline. Because it takes humble, prayerful dependence on God to discern how best to show others love in each situation (SEE COLOSSIANS 4:5–6). Sometimes we speak up; other times, it’s best to be silent.

May we find peace in knowing that the same God who drew us near while we were still in hardened opposition to Him (ROMANS 5:6) is powerfully at work in each person’s heart. - MONICA BRANDS
