나그네를 환영하기

친구들이 유럽에서 가장 가난한 나라 중의 하나인 몰도바에서 살았을 때, 그곳 사람들, 특히 기독교인들로부터 받은 따뜻한 환대에 감격했습니다. 한번은 친구들이 아주 가난하지만 여러 명의 아이들을 위탁받아 키우고 있는 그들 교회의 한 부부에게 옷가지들과 먹을 것을 가져간 적이 있었습니다. 그 부부는 내 친구들을 귀빈처럼 대해주면서 맛있는 차와, 극구 사양했지만 음식도 대접했습니다. 친구들은 선물로 받은 수박과 다른 과일들, 그리고 야채들을 가지고 그곳을 떠나면서 받은 환대에 경탄을 금치 못했습니다.

이 성도들은 하나님께서 그분의 백성인 이스라엘 민족에게 보여주라고 명령하신 환대를 몸으로 실천하고 있는 분들입니다. 하나님은 백성들에게 “그의 모든 도를 행하고 그를 사랑하며 마음과 뜻을 다하며 네 하나님을 섬기라”(신명기 10:12)고 말씀하셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 그것을 어떻게 실행할 수 있었을까요? 답은 몇 구절이 지난 다음에 나와 있습니다. “너희는 나그네를 사랑하라 전에 너희도 애굽 땅에서 나그네 되었음이니라”(19절). 나그네를 대접하는 것이 하나님을 섬기고 높이는 것이며, 그들에게 사랑과 관심을 보여주는 것이 하나님을 향한 신뢰를 증명하는 것입니다.

우리의 상황은 몰도바나 이스라엘 민족과 다를지도 모릅니다. 하지만 우리도 사람들을 따뜻하게 맞이함으로써 하나님을 향한 우리의 사랑을 실천할 수 있습니다. 집을 개방한다거나 만나는 사람들에게 미소로 인사함으로써 우리는 이 외롭고 상처 많은 세상에서 하나님의 돌보심과 환대를 더 넓혀 갈 수 있습니다.

Welcoming Strangers

When my friends lived in Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe, they were overwhelmed by the warm welcome they received there, especially from other Christians. Once they took some clothes and provisions to a couple from their church who were very poor, yet who were fostering several children. The couple treated my friends like honored guests, giving them sweet tea and, despite their protests, something to eat. As my friends left with gifts of watermelons and other fruits and vegetables, they marveled at the hospitality they experienced.

These believers embody the welcome that God commanded His people, the Israelites, to exhibit. He instructed them “to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul” (DEUTERONOMY 10:12). How could the Israelites live this out? The answer comes a few verses later: “You are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt” (V 19). By welcoming strangers, they would be serving and honoring God; and in showing them love and care, they would demonstrate their trust in Him.

Our circumstances might differ from the Moldovans or the Israelites, but we too can live out our love for God through our welcome to others. Whether through opening our homes or smiling a greeting to those we meet, we can extend God’s care and hospitality in a lonely, hurting world. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

온유하나 강함

적군이 네덜란드를 점점 더 점령해 들어오자 안네 프랭크는 가족과 함께 위험을 피하기 위해 비상한 각오를 가지고 비밀 은신처로 이동했습니다. 제2차 세계 대전 동안 그들은 그곳에서 2년 간 숨어 지냈는데, 결국 발각되어 강제수용소로 보내졌습니다. 안네는 나중에 유명해진 ‘안네의 일기’에 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “결국 이 세상에서 가장 예리한 무기는 친절하고 온유한 정신이다.”

온유함은 실제 삶에서는 단순하지 않은 문제일 수 있습니다.

이사야 40장에서 우리는 온유하고도 강하게 그려져 있는 하나님의 모습을 봅니다. 11절에 “그는 목자같이 양떼를 먹이시며 어린 양을 그 팔로 모으신다”고 말하고 있는데, 이것은 바로 다음 구절 뒤에 따라 나옵니다. “보라 주 여호와께서 장차 강한 자로 임하실 것이요 친히 그의 팔로 다스리실 것이라”(10절). 엄청난 힘을 가지셨지만 약한 자를 보호하는데 있어서는 온유하시다는 뜻입니다.

그리고 예수님을 생각해보십시오. 주님은 채찍을 만들어 휘두르시며 성전에서 환전하는 사람들의 테이블을 뒤집기도 하셨지만, 어린아이들을 부드럽게 돌보시기도 하셨습니다. 강한 어조로 바리새인들을 비난하셨지만(마태복음 23장), 주님의 온화한 자비가 필요했던 한 여인을 용서해주시기도 하셨습니다(요한복음 8:1-11).

우리가 약자를 위해 힘으로 맞서거나 정의를 구현하기 위해 다른 사람들에게 도전해야 할 때가 있지만, 우리는 또한 “[우리의] 관용을 모든 사람에게 알게”(빌립보서 4:5) 해야 합니다. 하나님을 섬길 때 우리의 가장 강한 힘은 때때로 어려움에 처한 사람들에게 온유한 마음으로 나타납니다.

Gentle Yet Powerful

As the enemy occupation of the Netherlands increased, Anne Frank and her family bravely prepared and then moved to a secret hiding place to escape the danger. They hid there two years during World War II before being found and sent to concentration camps. Yet Anne, writing in what became her famous Diary of a Young Girl, said this: “In the long run, the sharpest weapon of all is a kind and gentle spirit.”

Gentleness can be a complicated issue as we deal with real life.

In Isaiah 40 we get a picture of God that shows Him to be both gentle and powerful. In verse 11 we read: “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms.” But that verse follows this: “See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm” (V 10). Full of power, but gentle when it comes to protecting the vulnerable.

And think of Jesus, who fashioned a whip and brandished it as He flipped over the money-changers tables in the temple but who also gently cared for children. He used powerful words to denounce the Pharisees (MATTHEW 23) but forgave a woman who needed His gentle mercy (JOHN 8:1–11).

While there may be times to stand up with power for the weak and challenge others to pursue justice—we’re also to “let [our] gentleness be evident to all” (PHILIPPIANS 4:5). As we serve God, sometimes our greatest strength reveals a heart of gentleness to those in need. - DAVE BRANON

소음 탈출

몇 년 전, 한 대학 총장이 학생들에게 자기처럼 “전원을 끄고” 하루 저녁을 보내자고 제안했습니다. 학생들은 그렇게 하겠다고는 했지만 핸드폰을 두고 예배당에 들어가야 했기에 무척 마음이 내키지 않았습니다. 한 시간 동안 학생들은 음악과 기도의 예배를 드리며 조용히 앉아 있었습니다. 후에 한 참석자는 그날의 경험을 이야기하며 “마음을 조용히 가다듬을 수 있었던 아주 좋은 기회였고...... 어떤 잡다한 소음도 들리지 않는 장소”였다고 표현했습니다.

때때로 “잡다한 소음”을 벗어난다는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 외부와 내면 세계에서 들리는 시끄러운 소리들로 귀가 멍멍해지기도 합니다. 그러나 우리가 기꺼이 “전원을 차단” 할 때, 하나님을 알기 위해서는 잠잠히 있을 필요가 있다는 시편 기자의 말을 이해하게 됩니다(시편 46:10). 우리는 또한 열왕기상 19장에서 엘리야 선지자가 하나님을 찾을 때 바람이나 지진이나 불 같은 큰 혼란 속에서는 하나님을 찾지 못하고(9-13절), 오히려 하나님의 부드럽게 속삭이는 음성을 듣게 된 것을 볼 수 있습니다(12절).

축하연을 베푸는 곳에서는 어김없이 잡다한 소음이 생깁니다. 가족이나 친구들이 모일 때면 생기가 넘치는 대화, 풍성한 음식, 떠들썩한 웃음소리, 그리고 감미로운 사랑의 표현들이 생겨납니다. 그러나 우리가 조용히 우리의 마음을 열면 하나님과 함께 하는 시간이 훨씬 더 감미로운 것을 알게 됩니다. 엘리야처럼 우리도 고요함 속에서 하나님을 만날 수 있는 기회가 더 많은 것 같습니다. 그리고 가끔은 우리가 귀 기울일 때 우리 또한 그 부드럽게 속삭이는 음성을 듣게 될 것입니다.

Escaping the Noise

Several years ago, the president of a college suggested that students join her in “powering down” for an evening. Although the students agreed, it was with great reluctance that they laid aside their cell phones and entered the chapel. For the next hour, they sat quietly in a service of music and prayer. Afterward, one participant described the experience as “a wonderful opportunity to calm down . . . a place to just tune out all of the extra noise.”

Sometimes, it’s difficult to escape “extra noise.” The clamor of both our external and internal worlds can be deafening. But when we’re willing to “power down,” we begin to understand the psalmist’s reminder of the necessity to be still so we can know God (PSALM 46:10). In 1 Kings 19, we discover as well that when the prophet Elijah looked for the Lord, he didn’t find Him in the pandemonium of the wind or the earthquake or the fire (VV 9–13). Instead, Elijah heard God’s gentle whisper (V 12).

Extra noise is practically guaranteed during celebrations. When families and friends come together, it’s likely a time of animated conversations, excess food, boisterous laughter, and sweet expressions of love. But when we quietly open our hearts, we find that time with God is even sweeter. Like Elijah, we’re more likely to encounter God in the stillness. And sometimes, if we listen, we too will hear that gentle whisper. - CINDY HESS KASPER

투자 수익

1995년에 미국의 주식투자자들이 사상 최고의 수익을 올렸습니다. 평균해서 무려 투자액의 37.6퍼센트의 수익이었습니다. 그런데 2008년에는 투자자들이 정확히 거의 같은 37퍼센트의 손실을 보았습니다. 등락이 계속되었던 이 두 기간 사이에, 주식시장에 투자한 사람들은 그들의 투자가 어떻게 될까 궁금해 하며 때로는 두려움을 갖기도 했습니다.

예수님은 그를 따르는 사람들에게 주님께 삶을 투자하면 믿기지 않을 정도의 수익을 얻게 될 것이라고 확신시켜 주셨습니다. 그들은 자신들의 삶을 맡기며 집과 직업, 지위, 가족을 떠나는 등, “모든 것을 버리고 [주님을] 따랐습니다” (28절). 그러나 그들은 한 부자가 재물을 움켜쥐고 놓지 않으려고 애쓰는 것을 보고는 자신들의 투자에 수익이 나지 않을지도 모른다는 염려가 싹트기 시작했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 누구든지 주님을 위해 기꺼이 희생하는 사람은 “이 세상에서......백 배나 받고......오는 세상에서는 영원한 생명을 얻을 것이다”(30절, 현대인의 성경)라고 대응하셨습니다. 그것은 지금까지의 그 어떤 주식시장과 비교해 봐도 훨씬 나은 실적입니다.

우리는 영적인 부분에 투자할 때 “이율”에 대해서 염려할 필요가 없습니다. 하나님께 투자하면 그 이율의 확실성은 다른 무엇과도 비교할 수 없습니다. 돈을 투자할 때 우리의 목표는 금전적인 이득을 최대화하는
것이지만, 하나님께 투자할 때 우리가 돌려받는 것은 돈으로 측량될 수 없습니다. 그것은 지금 그리고 영원히 하나님을 아는 것에서 오는 기쁨과, 그 기쁨을 다른 사람들과 나누는 데서 오는 기쁨으로 측정됩니다!

Return on Investment

In 1995 US stock market investors received record-high returns—on average, a whopping 37.6 percent return on their dollars. Then in 2008 investors lost almost exactly as much: a negative 37.0 percent. The years between had varying returns, causing those with money in the market to wonder—sometimes with fear—what would become of their investment.

Jesus assured His followers they would have an incredible return on investing their lives in Him. They “left everything to follow [Him]”—leaving their homes, jobs, status, and families to put their lives on deposit (V 28). But they grew concerned that their investment might not pay off after watching a wealthy man struggle with the grip worldly goods had on him. Jesus replied, however, that anyone willing to sacrifice for Him would “receive a hundred times as much in this present age . . . and in the age to come eternal life” (V 30). That’s a far better outcome than any stock market could ever match.

We don’t have to be concerned about the “interest rate” on our spiritual investment—with God, it’s an unmatched certainty. With money, our aim is to maximize the financial gain from our investment. With God, what we get back isn’t measured in dollars and cents, but in the joy that comes from knowing Him now and forever—and sharing that joy with others! KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

선택받지못했을때

내 친구가 페이스북에 프로젝트를 끝냈다는 글을 올렸습니다. 사람들은 그를 축하해주었지만, 그의 글은 내 마음을 칼로 찌르는 것 같았습니다. 그 프로젝트는 ‘내가’ 하기로 되어 있었습니다. 그런데 내가 그만 제외되어 버렸고, 그 이유도 확실히 몰랐습니다.

불쌍한 요셉. 그는 하나님에 의해 제외되었습니다. 그는 그 이유를 알고 있었습니다. 요셉은 가룟 유다를 대신할 자리에 추천 받은 두 사람 중의 하나였습니다. 제자들은 이렇게 기도했습니다. “모든 사람의 마음을 아시는 주님, 이 두 사람 중에 주님이 택하신 사람이 누군지 보여주소서”(사도행전 1:24, 현대인의 성경). 하나님은 다른 사람을 택하셨습니다. “제비 뽑아 맛디아를 얻”(26 절)음으로 하나님께서 제자들에게 그분의 결정을 알려주셨습니다.

나는 제자들이 맛디아를 축하해줄때 요셉이 어땠을까 궁금했습니다. 그는 선택받지 못한 것을 어떻게 받아들였을까요? 버림받았다고 느꼈을까요? 자기 연민에 빠져 허우적거렸을까요? 다른 사람들과 거리두기를 했을까요? 아니면 하나님을 신뢰하고 도와주는 역할을 하면서 기쁜 마음으로 남아 있었을까요?

어떤 선택이 가장 좋은지 나는 압니다. 그리고 내가 원하는 선택이 무엇인지도 압니다. ‘정말 혼란스럽네! 나를 원하지 않아도 상관없어. 나 없이 어떻게 하나 한번 두고 보자구.’ 이렇게 생각하면 마음은 더 편할지는 모르겠지만, 그것은 오직 이기적인 마음 때문입니다.

요셉이 더 이상 성경에 언급되지 않기 때문에 그가 어떻게 반응했는지는 알 수 없습니다. 더 중요한 것은 우리가 선택받지 못했을 때 어떻게 반응하느냐 하는 것입니다. 우리 모두 예수님의 나라가 우리 자신들의 성공보다 더 중요하다는 것을 기억할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그리고 그분이 정해주시는 역할이 무엇이든 우리가 기쁜 마음으로 그것을 감당할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

When You’re Not Chosen

My friend’s Facebook post announced he had finished a project. Others congratulated him, but his post knifed my heart. That project was supposed to be mine . I had been passed over, and I wasn’t sure why.

Poor Joseph. He was passed over by God, and he knew why. Joseph was one of two men in the running to replace Judas. The disciples prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen” (ACTS 1:24). God chose the other guy. Then He announced His decision to the group, when “the lot fell to Matthias” (V 26).

As the disciples congratulated Matthias, I wonder about Joseph. How did he handle his rejection? Did he feel jilted, wallow in self-pity, and distance himself from the others? Or did he trust God and cheerfully remain in a supportive role?

I know which option is best. And I know which option I’d want to take. How embarrassing! If you don’t want me, fine. Let’s see how you do without me. That choice might feel better, but only because it’s selfish.

Joseph isn’t mentioned again in Scripture, so we don’t know how he reacted. More relevant is how we respond when we’re not chosen. May we remember that Jesus’s kingdom matters more than our success, and may we joyfully serve in whatever role He selects. - MIKE WITTMER

바로 우리 옆에 계심

한 여인이 스파게티 소스 유리병들이 놓여있는 맨 꼭대기 선반을 뚫어지게 바라보고 있었습니다. 나도 그 식품매장 통로에서 같은 선반을 바라보며 무엇을 고를까 고민하며 한 1, 2분정도 그녀 옆에 서 있었습니다. 그러나 그녀는 자신만의 고민에 빠져 내가 옆에 있다는 것을 의식하지 못하는 것 같았습니다. 나는 키가 꽤 큰 편이어서 꼭대기 선반에 있는 물건을 집는데 아무 문제가 없습니다. 반면, 그 여자는 키가 전혀 크지 않았습니다. 나는 큰 소리로 도와주겠다고 말했습니다. 그러자 여인은 깜짝 놀라며 “어머나, 여기 서 계신 줄 몰랐네요. 네, 도와주세요.”라고 말했습니다.

예수님의 제자들도 바로 그 같은 상황에 직면해 있었습니다. 군중들은 굶주려 있었고 장소는 외딴 곳이었으며 시간은 자꾸 흘러가고 있었습니다. “저녁이 되매 제자들이 나아와 이르되 이곳은 빈들이요 때는 이미 저물었으니 무리를 보내어 마을에 들어가 먹을 것을 사 먹게 하소서”(마태복음 14:15). 이에 예수님이 그들에게 직접 사람들을 돌보라고 하시자 그들은 “여기 우리에게 있는 것은......”(17절)하면서 반응했습니다. 제자들이 생각할 수 있는 것이라고는 부족하다는 것뿐이었습니다. 그러나 그들 바로 옆에는 빵을 몇 배로 늘려 주실 뿐 아니라 그분 자신이 생명의 양식이 되시는 예수님이 서 계셨습니다.

우리는 어려운 일들에 아주 사로잡혀 시각이 제한되어 버린 탓에, 우리 스스로 그것들을 해결해보려고 애쓰기 때문에 부활하신 그리스도께서 옆에 계시다는 사실을 놓쳐버립니다. 저 멀리 언덕에서부터 식품점 통로까지, 그리고 그 중간 어느 곳에서든 그분은 임마누엘, 곧 우리 곁에 계시는 하나님이시며 항상 계셔서 어려울 때 도와주시는 분이십니다.

Right There with Us

She was completely focused on the top shelf, where the glass jars of spaghetti sauce sat. I’d been standing beside her in the grocery aisle for a minute or two eyeing that same shelf, trying to decide. But she seemed oblivious to my presence, lost in her own predicament. Now I have no problem with top shelves because I’m a fairly tall man. She, on the other hand, was not tall, not at all. I spoke up and offered to help. Startled, she said, “Goodness, I didn’t even see you standing there. Yes, please help me.”

The disciples had quite the situation on their hands—hungry crowds, a remote place, and time slipping away—“It’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food” (MATTHEW 14:15). When challenged by Jesus to take care of the people themselves, they responded, “We have here only . . .” (V 17). All they seemed to be aware of was their lack. Yet standing right beside them was Jesus, not just the multiplier of bread but the Bread of Life Himself.

We can get so wrapped up in our challenges and trying to figure them out for ourselves with our often-limited perspective that we miss the abiding presence of the risen Christ. From remote hillsides to grocery store aisles and everywhere else in between, He’s Immanuel—God right there with us, an ever-present help in trouble. - JOHN BLASE

고통에 목적이 있는가?

신장이 나빠져서 남은 생애를 투석 받으며 지내야 한다는 것을 알게 된 시우 펜은 삶을 포기하고 싶었습니다. 은퇴 후 독신으로 지내고 있는 오랜 신자인 그녀는 삶을 더 연장하는 것이 아무런 의미가 없다고 여겼습니다. 그러나 친구들이 나서서 참고 투석을 받으면서 하나님을 신뢰하며 도움을 구하라고 설득하였습니다.

왜 우리가 고통을 당하는지 이해하기 어려울 수도 있습니다. 그럼에도 하나님은 우리의 고난을 예기치 않는 방법으로 사용하시기도 합니다. 시련 가운데 하나님께 나아가 위로와 사랑을 구할 때, 우리는 다른 사람들을 도와줄 수 있는 힘도 함께 얻게 됩니다. 바울이 자신의 고통에 목적이 있다는 것을 알게 된 것도 전혀 놀라운 일이 아닙니다. 그는 고통을 통해 하나님의 위로를 얻는 기회를 갖게 되었고, 그 받은 위로로 다른 사람들을 축복할 수 있었습니다 (고린도후서 1:3-5). 우리는 고통과 역경을 부정하기 보다는 하나님의 능력 안에서 용기를 얻어 그 고통을 선한 일을 위해 사용할 수 있습니다.

A Purpose in Pain?

When Siu Fen discovered she had kidney failure and would need dialysis for the rest of her life, she wanted to give up. Retired and single, the longtime believer in Jesus saw no point in prolonging her life. But friends convinced her to persevere and go for dialysis and trust in God to help her.

Two years later, she found her experience coming into play when she visited a friend from church with a debilitating disease. The woman felt alone, as few could truly understand what she was
going through. But Siu Fen was able to identify with her physical and emotional pain and could connect with her in a personal way. Her own journey enabled her to walk alongside the woman, giving her a special measure of comfort others couldn’t. “Now I see how God can still use me,” she said.

It can be hard to understand why we suffer. Yet God can use our affliction in unexpected ways. As we turn to Him for comfort and love in the midst of trials, it also empowers us to help others. No wonder Paul learned to see purpose in his own suffering: It gave him the opportunity to receive God’s comfort, which he could then use to bless others (2 CORINTHIANS 1:3– 5). We’re not asked to deny our pain and suffering, but we can take heart in God’s ability to use it for good. - LESLIE KOH

보물찾기

묻혀 있는 보물. 동화책에 나오는 말처럼 들립니다. 하지만 괴짜 백만장자인 포레스트 펜은 2백만 불에 상당하는 보석과 금이 들어있는 상자를 록키산맥 어딘가에 숨겨놓았다고 주장합니다. 많은 사람들이 그 보물을 찾으러 갔고, 실제로 그 숨겨진 재물을 찾으려다 네 사람이 목숨을 잃었습니다.

‘그렇게 찾아야만 할 가치가 있는 보물이 과연 있을까?’ 잠언 기자는 우리로 잠시 멈추어 생각해보게 합니다. 잠언 4장 에는 한 아버지가 아들들에게 어떻게 사는 것이 잘 사는 것인지 말하면서, 어떤 대가를 치르더라도 지혜는 추구할 만한 것이라고 쓰여 있습니다(7절). 그는 지혜야말로 삶을 가르쳐주고 넘어지지 않게 하며 영예로운 면류관을 씌워준다고 말합니다(8-12절). 수백 년 후, 예수님의 제자 야고보도 지혜의 중요성을 강조하였습니다. “오직 위로부터 난 지혜는 첫째 성결하고 다음에 화평하고 관용하고 양순하며 긍휼과 선한 열매가 가득하고 편견과 거짓이 없나니”(야고보서 3:17). 지혜를 구할 때 우리의 삶에는 온갖 좋은 것들로 넘쳐나게 됩니다.

지혜를 찾는다는 것은 궁극적으로 모든 지혜와 명철의 근원이신 하나님을 찾는 것입니다. 그리고 위로부터 내려오는 지혜는 우리가 상상할 수 있는 어떤 묻혀 있는 보물보다도 더 가치가 있습니다.

Searching for Treasure

Buried treasure. It sounds like something out of a children’s storybook. But eccentric millionaire Forrest Fenn claims to have left a box of jewels and gold, worth up to $2 million, somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Many people have gone in search of it. In fact, four people have lost their lives trying to find the hidden riches.

The author of Proverbs gives us reason to stop and think: Does any kind of treasure merit such a quest? In Proverbs 4, a father writing to his sons about how to live well suggests that wisdom is one thing worth seeking at any cost (V 7). Wisdom, he says, will lead us through life, keep us from stumbling, and crown us with honor (VV 8–12). Writing hundreds of years later, James, one of Jesus’s disciples, also emphasized the importance of wisdom. “The wisdom that comes from heaven,” he writes, “is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere” (JAMES 3:17). When we seek wisdom, we find all kinds of good things flourishing in our lives.

To seek wisdom is ultimately to seek God, the source of all wisdom and understanding. And the wisdom that comes from above is worth more than any buried treasure we could ever imagine. - AMY PETERSON

비교하지 않기

“앞으로 페이스북에 ‘좋은 일만 올리지 않고 모두 다’ 올릴 거야!”

친구 수가 자기 남편과 함께 점심식사를 하면서 무심코 한 이 한 마디에 나는 큰 소리로 웃어넘기면서도 한편으로 생각도 하게 되었습니다. 소셜 미디어는 시간과 공간을 초월해서 친구들과 계속 연락을 취하고 기도도 할 수 있게 해주는 좋은 수단입니다. 그러나 우리가 주의하지 않으면 그것은 삶에 대한 비현실적인 태도를 갖게 합니다. 올라와 있는 글 중 우리가 보는 상당수가 “좋은 얘기들”의 “요점 정리”라면, 다른 사람들의 삶은 아무런 문제가 없구나, 그리고 우리 자신의 삶은 어디서 잘못 되었지 라는 잘못된 생각을 하게 됩니다.

남들과 비교하는 것은 불행으로 가는 확실한 지름길입니다. 예수님의 제자들이 자기들끼리 서로 비교하자(누가복음 9:46; 22:24 참조), 예수님께서 황급히 그것을 말리셨습니다. 예수님이 부활하신지 얼마 되지 않아 제자들과 만났을 때 베드로에게 믿음으로 말미암아 고난을 받게 될 것이라고 말씀하시자, 베드로가 요한을 돌아보면서 “주님 이 사람은 어떻게 되겠습니까?”라고 물었습니다. 그러자 예수님은 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “내가 올 때까지
그를 머물게 하고자 할지라도 네게 무슨 상관이냐 너는 나를 따르라” (요한복음 21:21-22).

예수님은 베드로에게 전혀 도움이 안 되는 남과 비교하는 마음에 대한 가장 적절한 처방을 가르쳐주셨습니다. 우리가 마음을 모아 하나님과 하나님이 우리를 위해 행하신 모든 일에 집중할 때, 자기중심적인 생각은 사라지고 그분을 간절한 마음으로 따르게 됩니다. 하나님은 세상 속 경쟁에서 오는 긴장과 스트레스 대신에 우리에게 사랑으로 임하시면서 평강을 베풀어주십니다. 아무것도 그분과 비교할 수 없습니다.

No Comparison

“One of these days I’m going to put it all on Facebook—not just the good stuff! ”

My friend Sue’s comment—made casually over lunch with her husband—caused me to laugh out loud and also to think. Social media can be a good thing, helping us stay in touch with and pray for friends across the years and miles. But if we’re not careful, it can also create an unrealistic outlook on life. When much of what we see posted is a “highlight reel” of “the good stuff,” we can be misled into thinking others’ lives are without trouble, and wonder where our own went wrong.

Comparing ourselves with others is a sure recipe for unhappiness. When the disciples compared themselves to each other (SEE LUKE 9:46; 22:24), Jesus quickly discouraged it. Soon after His resurrection, Jesus told Peter how he would suffer for his faith. Peter then turned to John and asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me” (JOHN 21:21–22).

Jesus pointed Peter to the best remedy for unhealthy comparisons. When our minds are focused on God and all He’s done for us, self-focused thoughts fall gently away and we long to follow Him. In place of the world’s competitive strain and stress, He gives us His loving presence and peace. Nothing can compare with Him. - JAMES BANKS

정말 좋은 소식!

지역 신문에 짤막하지만 마음 훈훈한 기사가 실렸습니다. 건강한 가족관계 회복을 위한 신앙 프로그램에 참가했던 재소자들에게 자유롭게 가족을 찾아가볼 수 있도록 드문 선처가 베풀어졌다는 것입니다. 어떤 재소자들은 여러 해 동안 자녀들을 보지 못했습니다. 그들은 유리벽을 마주보고 얘기하는 것 대신 사랑하는 사람들을 만지고 안아볼 수 있었습니다. 가족들이 더 가까워지면서 눈물이 하염없이 흐르고 상처들이 치유되기 시작했습니다.

대부분의 독자들에게 이 기사는 그저 하나의 이야기에 지나지 않았습니다. 그러나 이 가족들에게는 서로를 안아보는 것이 인생을 변화시키는 사건이었고, 어떤 가족들에게는 용서와 화해의 과정이 시작되었습니다.

하나님의 아들을 통해 그분이 우리 죄를 용서하시고 화해를 베푸신 일은 기독교 신앙이 말하는 단순한 사실 그 이상의 의미를 지닙니다. 화해 소식을 다룬 신문기사를 보면서 예수님의 희생 이야기는 세계 만민 뿐 아니라 바로 우리 자신들에게도 정말 대단한 소식이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

예수님의 희생 이야기는 우리가 한 일 때문에 죄책감에 사로잡힐 때마다 우리가 있는 힘을 다해 매달릴 수 있는 소식입니다. 그렇게 할 때 하나님이 끝없이 자비로우시다는 사실이 우리 개인에게 다가오는 소식이 됩니다. 예수님이 우리를 대신해서 죽으셨기 때문에 우리는 깨끗이 씻음 받아 “눈보다 희어져”(시편 51:7) 하나님 아버지께로 올 수 있습니다. 우리가 그분의 자비를 누릴 자격이 없다는 것을 알게 되는 그런 때에는 하나님의 사랑과 연민은 변함없으시다는(1절), 우리가 의지할 수 있는 그 한 가지 사실에 매달릴 수 있습니다.

Great News!

The article in the local newspaper was short but heart-warming. After attending a faith-based program on building stronger family ties, a group of prison inmates were given a rare treat of an open visit with their families. Some hadn’t seen their children in years. Instead of talking through a glass panel, they could touch and hold their loved ones. The tears flowed freely as families grew closer and wounds began to heal.

For most readers, it was just a story. But for these families, holding one another was a life-changing event—and for some, the process of forgiveness and reconciliation was begun.

God’s forgiveness of our sin and offer of reconciliation, made possible through His Son, is more than a mere fact of the Christian faith. The article’s news of reconciliation reminds us that Jesus’s sacrifice is great news not just for the world, but for you and me.

In times when we’re overwhelmed by guilt for something we’ve done, however, it’s news we can cling to desperately. That’s when the fact of God’s unending mercy becomes personal news: because of Jesus’s dying on our behalf, we can come to the Father washed clean, “whiter than snow” (PSALM 51:7). In such times, when we know we don’t deserve His mercy, we can hold on to the only thing we can depend on: God’s unfailing love and compassion (V 1). LESLIE KOH
