하나님이 “안 된다”고 하실 때

싱가포르의 모든 젊은 남자처럼 나도 18세가 되어 입대를 앞두고 행정병이나 운전병과 같은 편안한 곳에 배치되기를 간절히 기도했습니다. 특히 체력이 강한 편이 아니라 고된 전투 훈련을 피하고 싶었던 것입니다. 그런데 어느 날 저녁 성경을 읽고 있는데 한 구절이 눈에 확 들어왔습니다. “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다......” (고린도후서 12:9).

순간 가슴이 철렁 내려앉았지만 그럴 필요가 없었습니다. 하나님이 나의 기도에 응답해주신 것입니다. 만약 내가 힘든 곳에 배치되더라도 하나님이 나를 보살펴주실 것으로 믿었습니다.

결국, 나는 기갑부대의 보병으로 배치 되어 내키지 않는 일을 하게 되었습니다. 지금 되돌아보면 그때 하나님이 내가 원했던 보직을 주시지 않은 것이 도리어 감사합니다. 훈련과 경험이 나를 육체적으로나 정신적으로 강하게 만들었고, 성인이 되는 나에게 자신감을 심어주었던 것입니다.

이사야 25:1-5에서 선지자는 이스라엘이 벌을 받고 나서 대적들로부터 구원 받을 것이라고 예언한 후, 하나님의 그 계획을 두고 하나님을 찬양합니다. 이사야는 고난의 시기도 포함되어 있는 이 모든 “놀라운 일들은 오래전에 계획된 것”이라고 기록합니다(1절).

사실 “안 된다”라는 하나님의 말씀은 받아들이기가 힘듭니다. 어떤 사람을 위기에서 구하려는 것 같이, 선한 일을 위해 기도할 때 더욱 이해하기 힘듭니다. 그러나 바로 그때가 하나님의 선하신 계획이 진리임을 알고 확실히 붙잡아야 할 때입니다. 왜 그런지 이해하지 못할 때도, 우리는 주님의 사랑과 선하심과 신실하심만은 언제나 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

When God Says No

When I was conscripted into the military at age eighteen, as all young Singaporean men are, I prayed desperately for an easy posting. A clerk or driver, perhaps. Not being particularly strong, I hoped to be spared the rigors of combat training. But one evening as I read my Bible, one verse leaped off the page: “My grace is sufficient for you . . .” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9).

My heart dropped—but it shouldn’t have. God had answered my prayers. Even if I received a difficult assignment, He would provide for me.

So I ended up as an armored infantryman, doing things I didn’t always enjoy. Looking back now, I’m grateful God didn’t give me what I wanted. The train-
ing and experience toughened me physically and mentally and gave me confidence to enter adulthood.

In Isaiah 25:1–5, after prophesying Israel’s punishment and subsequent deliverance from her enemies, the prophet praises God for His plans. All these “wonderful things,” Isaiah notes, had been “planned long ago” (V 1), yet they included some arduous times.

It can be hard to hear God saying no, and even harder to understand when we’re praying for something good—like someone’s deliverance from a crisis. That’s when we need to hold on to the truth of God’s good plans. We may not understand why, but we can keep trusting in His love, goodness, and faithfulness. LESLIE KOH

없애버려서 좋은 날

2006년부터 새해가 다가오면 ‘없애버려서 좋은 날’ 이라는 특이한 행사를 하는 사람들이 있습니다. 라틴 아메리카 전통을 따른 것인데, 지난해 있었던 불쾌하거나 당황스러웠던 기억들과 좋지 않았던 사건들을 종이에 써서 산업용고성능 파쇄기에 넣어 없애버리는 것입니다. 이 때 어떤 사람들은 없애버려 좋은 것들을 대형해머로 부숴버리기도 합니다.

시편 103편의 저자는 사람들이 불쾌한 기억을 없애버려서 좋다고 하는 것보다 한발 더 나아갑니다. 그는 하나님이 우리의 죄를 없애버리기를 좋아하신다는 사실을 상기시켜줍니다. 그 시편 기자는 자기 백성들을 향한 하나님의 크신 사랑을 그림 그리듯 표현하고 있습니다. 하나님 사랑의 크기를 이 하늘과 땅 사이의 거리만큼 크다고 말하는 식입니다(11절). 뿐만 아니라 하나님의 관대함에 대해서도 공간개념으로 표현합니다. 해 뜨는 데부터 해지는 데까지 만큼이나 멀리 하나님은 자기 백성들의 죄를 옮기셨다고 말합니다(12절). 시편 기자는 하나님의 백성들에게 주님의 사랑과 관대함이 무한하고 완벽하다는 진실을 실감나게 알려주려는 것입니다. 하나님은 자기 백성들의 잘못을 모두 용서하심으로써 죄의 권세로부터 그들을 자유롭게 풀어주셨습니다.

좋은 소식이 있습니다! 우리는 ‘없애버려서 좋은 날’을 경험하기 위해 해가 바뀌기를 기다릴 필요가 없습니다. 예수님을 믿으며 우리의 죄를 고백하고 죄에서 돌이키면, 주님은 없애버려도 좋은 그것들을 깊은 바다 속으로 던져버리실 것입니다. 오늘이 바로 ‘없애버려서 좋은 날’이 될 수 있습니다!

Good Riddance Day

Since 2006 a group of people have celebrated an unusual event around the New Year. It’s called Good Riddance Day. Based on a Latin American tradition, individuals write down unpleasant, embarrassing memories and bad issues from the past year and throw them into an industrial-strength shredder. Or some take a sledgehammer to their good riddance item.

The writer of Psalm 103 goes beyond suggesting that people say good riddance to unpleasant memories. He reminded us that God bids good riddance to our sins. In his attempt to express God’s vast love for His people, the psalmist used word pictures. He compared the vastness of God’s love to the distance between the heavens and the earth (V 11). Then the psalmist talked about His forgiveness in spatial terms. As far as the place where the sun rises is from the place where the sun sets, so the Lord has removed His people’s sins from them (V 12). The psalmist wanted God’s people to know that His love and forgiveness were infinite and complete. God freed His people from the power of their transgressions by fully pardoning them.

Good news! We don’t have to wait until the New Year to experience Good Riddance Day. Through our faith in Jesus, when we confess and turn from our sins, He bids good riddance to them and casts them into the depths of the sea. Today can be a Good Riddance Day! MARVIN WILLIAMS

가장 높은 곳

남편이 한 친구를 교회로 초대했는데 예배 후에 그 친구가 이런 이야기를 했습니다. “찬양과 분위기는 참 좋은데 잘 이해가 안 돼. 너희는 왜 예수에게 그렇게 높은 영광을 드리는 거지?” 남편은 기독교란 예수 그리스도와의 관계이기 때문에 예수님이 없는 기독교는 아무 의미가 없다는 것, 그리고 예수님이 우리 삶에서 하신 일 때문에 우리가 함께 모여 예수님을 찬양하는 것이라고 설명해주었습니다.

예 수 님 은 누 구 시 며 어 떤 일을 하셨습니까? 바울 사도는 골로새서 1장에서 이 질문에 대한 답을 주고 있습니다. 누구도 하나님을 보지 못했지만, 예수님이 우리에게 하나님의 모습을 드러내 보여주시기 위해 오셨습니다(15절). 하나님의 아들이신 예수님은 세상에 오셔서 우리를 위해 돌아가시고 우리를 죄에서 자유롭게 하셨습니다. 죄가 우리를 하나님의 거룩함으로부터 갈라놓았기 때문에 완전한 누군가를 통해서야만 하나님과의 평화가 이루어질 수 있는데 그분이 바로 예수님이십니다 (14,20절). 다시 말하면, 예수님은 어느 누구도 줄 수 없는 것, 즉 하나님께 나아가는 것과 영원한 삶을 우리에게 주신 분입니다(요한복음 17:3).

예수님이 왜 그 높은 영광을 받아야 합니까? 예수님은 죽음을 정복하셨기 때문입니다. 예수님은 그분의 사랑과 희생으로 우리의 마음을 얻었습니다. 예수님은 날마다 우리에게 새로운 힘을 주십니다. 예수님은 우리의 전부입니다!

우리는 예수님이 영광을 받으시기 합당하기에 영광을 드립니다. 우리가 예수님을 높이 올려드리는 이유는 그곳이 예수님이 있어야 할 곳이기 때문입니다. 우리 모두 진심으로 예수님을 가장 높이 올려드립시다.

The Highest Place

My husband invited a friend to church. After the service his friend said, “I liked the songs and the atmosphere, but I don’t get it. Why do you give Jesus such a high place of honor?” My husband then explained to him that Christianity is a relationship with Christ. Without Him, Christianity would be meaningless. It’s because of what Jesus has done in our lives that we meet together and praise Him.

Who is Jesus and what has He done? The apostle Paul answered this question in Colossians 1. No one has seen God, but Jesus came to reflect and reveal Him (V 15). Jesus, as the Son of God, came to die for us and free us from sin. Sin has separated us from God’s holiness, so peace could only be made through someone perfect. That was Jesus (VV 14, 20). In other words, Jesus has given us what no one else could—access to God and eternal life (JOHN 17:3).

Why does He deserve such a place of honor? He conquered death. He won our hearts by His love and sacrifice. He gives us new strength every day. He is everything to us!

We give Him the glory because He deserves it. We lift Him up because that is His rightful place. Let’s give Him the highest place in our hearts. KEILA OCHOA

그저 어느 하루?

윌리엄 딘 하웰스의 단편 소설 ‘날마다 크리스마스’에는 자신의 소원을 이루는 한 어린 소녀의 이야기가 나옵니다. 그 소녀가 원하던 대로 어느 길고 지루한 일 년 동안 정말 매일 매일이 크리스마스입니다. 하지만 3일이 지나면서 크리스마스의 기쁨은 이미 시들해지고 오래지 않아 모두가 캔디를 지겨워하게 됩니다. 칠면조 고기가 거의 동이 나서 엄청나게 비싼 값으로 팔립니다. 이제는 감사한 마음으로 선물을 주고받지도 않으니까 선물들은 곳곳에 쌓여갑니다. 사람들은 화가 나서 서로 물어뜯을 것처럼 싸웁니다.

다행스럽게도 하웰스의 이야기는 풍자소설에 지나지 않습니다. 우리는 성경을 읽으면서 어디서나 예수님을 만나지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 크리스마스를 축하하는 일이 언제나 즐거운 것은 정말 큰 축복입니다.

예수님이 하나님 아버지께로 승천하신 후, 베드로 사도는 예루살렘 성전에 모인 무리들에게 예수님은 모세가 “하나님이 너희를 위하여 너희 형제 가운데서 나 같은 선지자 하나를 세울 것”(사도행전 3:22; 신명기 18:18)이라고 예언한 그분이며, “땅 위의 모든 족속이 너의 씨로 말미암아 복을 받으리라”고 하나님이 아브라함에게 하신 약속도 예수님을 가리키는 것이라고 선언했습니다(사도행전 3:25; 창세기 22:18). 베드로는 특히 메시아가 오시는 것을 가리켜 “모든 선지자도 이 때를 가리켜 말하였느니라” (사도행전 3:24)고 강조했습니다.

크리스마스 명절이 지나간 오랜 후에도 크리스마스 정신을 마음에 계속 담아둘 수 있습니다. 성경 전체에 나타나 있는 예수님을 생각하면 크리스마스는 그저 어느 한 날이 아닌, 그보다 훨씬 더 큰 의미를 지닌 특별한 날임을 알 수 있습니다.

Just Another Day?

In Christmas Every Day, William Dean Howells tells of a little girl who gets her wish. For one long, horrible year it is indeed Christmas every day. By day three, the yuletide joy has already begun to wear thin. Before long everyone hates candy. Turkeys become scarce and sell for outrageous prices. Presents are no longer received with gratitude as they pile up everywhere. People angrily snap at each other.

Thankfully, Howell’s story is just a satirical tale. But what an incredible blessing that the subject of the Christmas celebration never wearies us despite the fact that we see Him throughout the Bible.

After Jesus had ascended to His Father, the apostle Peter proclaimed to a crowd at the temple in Jerusalem that Jesus was the one Moses foretold when he said, “God will raise up for you a prophet like me” (ACTS 3:22; DEUTERONOMY 18:18). God’s promise to Abraham, “Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed,” was really a reference to Jesus (ACTS 3:25; GENESIS 22:18). Peter noted, “All the prophets who have spoken have foretold these days”—the arrival of the Messiah (ACTS 3:24).

We can keep the spirit of Christmas alive long after the celebrations have ended. By seeing Christ in the whole story of the Bible we can appreciate how Christmas is so much more than just another day. TIM GUSTAFSON

겨울 눈

겨울이면 나는 이른 아침에 일어나 종종 새벽에 내린 눈으로 덮인 평화롭고 고요한 세상의 아름다운 모습에 놀라곤 합니다. 밤에 자신의 존재를 알리는 요란한 봄의 뇌우와는 달리 눈은 소리 없이 부드럽게 내립니다.

“겨울 눈 노래”에서 오드리 아싸드는 예수님이 태풍처럼 강력하게 이 세상에 오실 수도 있었으나, 그보다는 겨울밤 창밖에 부드럽게 떨어지는 눈처럼 고요하고 천천히 오셨다고 노래합니다.

예수님이 이 세상에 오셨을 때 조용 하지만 놀라운 일들이 많이 있었습니다. 예수님은 궁궐 대신 뜻밖에도 베들레헴 밖의 누추한 곳에서 태어나셨습니다. 그리고 거기서 유일한 잠자리였던 말구유에서 주무셨습니다(누가복음 2:7). 왕족과 관리들이 찾아온 것이 아니라 비천한 목동들이 예수님의 오심을 환영했습니다(15-16절). 또 부를 누리지 않으셨기에 예수님의 부모님은 주님을 성전에 데려갔을 때 값싼 새 두 마리로 희생제물을 드릴 수밖에 없었습니다(24절).

이사야 선지자는 예수님이 이 세상에 겸손한 모습으로 오실 거라고 예언했습니다. 그는 앞으로 오실 구세주는 “외치지 아니하며 목소리를 높이지 아니하며”(이사야 42:2) 힘을 가지고 상한 갈대를 꺾지 아니하며 꺼져가는 등불을 끄지 아니하실 거라고(3절) 말했습니다. 오히려 주님은 우리에게 하나님과의 화평을 주시려고 주님께 가까이 다가가도록 친근한 모습으로 오셨습니다. 하나님과의 화평은 구유에서 태어나신 구세주의 놀라운 이야기를 믿는 모든 사람들에게 다 주어집니다.

Winter Snow

In winter, I often wake to the beautiful surprise of a world blanketed in the peace and quiet of an early morning snow. Not loudly like a spring thunderstorm that announces its presence in the night, snow comes softly.

In “Winter Snow Song,” Audrey Assad sings that Jesus could have come to earth in power like a hurricane, but instead He came quietly and slowly like the winter snow falling softly in the night outside my window. Jesus’s arrival took many by quiet surprise. Instead of being born in a palace, He was born in an unlikely place, a humble dwelling outside Bethlehem. And He slept in the only bed available, a manger (LUKE 2:7). Instead of being attended by royalty and government officials, Jesus was welcomed by lowly shepherds (VV 15–16). Instead of having wealth, Jesus’s parents could only afford the inexpensive sacrifice of two birds when they presented Him at the temple (V 24).

The unassuming way Jesus entered the world was foreshadowed by the prophet Isaiah, who prophesied the coming Savior would “not shout or cry out” (ISAIAH 42:2) nor would He come in power that might break a damaged reed or extinguish a struggling flame (V 3). Instead He came gently in order to draw us to Himself with His offer of peace with God—a peace still available to anyone who believes the unexpected story of a Savior born in a manger. LISA SAMRA

묵상하기

오스왈드 챔버스는 런던 성경훈련학교 시절(1911-1915)에 강의 중에 했던 말로 종종 학생들을 놀라게 했습니다. 한 여학생에 따르면, 토론은 강의 후 함께 하는 식사시간에만 할 수 있었는데, 그때 질문과 반대의견이 쏟아져 나왔다고 합니다. 그러면 챔버스는 종종 그냥 웃으며 “그 부분은 그냥 놔두세요. 시간이 지나면 알게 될 겁니다.”라고 했다고 합니다. 그는 학생들에게 쟁점들에 대해 깊이 생각해보라고 권면하면서, 하나님께서 그 분의 진리를 밝히 보여주시는 것을 기다리라고 했습니다.

무엇을 묵상한다는 것은 집중하여 깊이 생각한다는 것입니다. 베들레헴에서 예수님이 탄생한 후 천사들이 나타나고 메시아를 보러 목자들이 찾아오는 사건들을 보면서 “마리아는 이 모든 말을 마음에 새기어 생각”했습니다(누가복음 2:19). 신약학자 W. E. 바인은 ‘묵상’이란 “마음을 내려놓다, 마음속으로 의논하다, 상황을 고려하여 마음속으로 비교하다”(‘신약성경 단어 해설사전’)는 뜻을 지닌다고 했습니다.

우리 삶 가운데 일어난 일들의 의미를 이해하려고 한다면, 우리는 마리아처럼 하나님과 그분의 지혜를 추구할 수 있습니다.

우리도 마리아처럼 우리 삶을 인도하시는 하나님을 받아들인다면, 하나님이 사랑으로 안내하는 많은 새로운 지침을 우리 마음에 새기고 묵상할 수 있을 것입니다.

Ponder It

During Oswald Chambers’ years at the Bible Training College in London (1911–15), he often startled the students with things he said during his lectures. One young woman explained that because discussion was reserved for the following mealtime together, Chambers would frequently be bombarded with questions and objections. She recalled that Oswald would often simply smile and say, “Just leave it for now; it will come to you later.” He encouraged them to ponder the issues and allow God to reveal His truth to them.

To ponder something is to concentrate and think deeply about it. After the events leading to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, followed by the appearance of angels and the shepherds who came to see the Messiah, “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (LUKE 2:19). New Testament scholar W. E. Vine said that ponder means “. . . to throw together, confer, to put one thing with another in considering circumstances” ( Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words ).

When we struggle to understand the meaning of what’s happening in our lives, we have Mary’s wonderful example of what it means to seek God and His wisdom.

When we, like her, accept God’s leading in our lives, we have many new things about His loving guidance to treasure and ponder in our hearts. DAVID C. MCCASLAND

부요하거나 고난 중에 있거나

앤 보스캠프의 책 ‘일천 가지 선물’은 일상생활 속에서 주님이 우리를 위해 하신 일들을 찾아보라고 독자들에게 권면합니다. 책을 보면, 작가는 싱크대 속에서 반짝이는 거품의 소박한 아름다움에서부터 자신(그리고 우리 모두!) 같은 죄인을 구원해주신 비할 데 없이 큰 은혜까지, 크고 작은 선물을 통해 자신에게 보여주신 하나님의 풍성한 은혜에 대해 매일 기록하고 있습니다. 그러면서 감사하는 마음이야말로 우리 인생의 가장 힘든 순간에도 하나님을 바라보게 해주는 비결이라고 앤은 자신 있게 말합니다.

욥은 인생의 그런 “힘든” 시간을 보냈던 사람으로 유명합니다. 정말 그는 여러 면에서 많은 것을 잃었습니다. 모든 가축을 잃은 직후, 열 명의 자식들이 모두 한꺼번에 죽었다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. “일어나 겉옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀었다”(1:20)고 할 정도로 욥의 슬픔은 깊었습니다. 하지만 그 고통스러운 순간에 그가 한 말을 보면, 욥은 감사의 훈련을 했던 사람이라는 생각이 듭니다. 그가 잃은 모든 것이 사실 하나님이 주셨던 것임을 인정하고 있기 때문입니다(21절). 그렇지 않고서야 어떻게 그런 감당할 수 없는 슬픔 속에도 하나님을 경배할 수 있겠습니까?

매일 감사하는 훈련이 모든 것을 잃어버리는 힘든 때에 우리가 느끼는 고통의 크기를 줄여주지는 못합니다. 이어지는 욥기에는 욥이 슬픔 가운데 질문하고 고민하는 부분이 많이 묘사되어 있습니다. 하지만, 우리 삶의 아주 세세한 부분까지도 역사하시는 하나님의 선하심을 알게 되면, 세상 삶의 가장 어두운 때에도 전능하신 하나님 앞에 무릎 꿇고 경배할 준비를 할 수 있습니다.

In Abundance or Affliction

Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand Gifts encourages readers to search their lives each day for what the Lord has done for them. In it, she daily notes God’s abundant generosity to her in gifts both large and small, ranging from the simple beauty of iridescent bubbles in the dish sink to the incomparable salvation of sinners like herself (and the rest of us!). Ann contends that gratitude is the key to seeing God in even the most troubling of life’s moments.

Job is famous for a life of such “troubling” moments. Indeed, his losses were deep and many. Just moments after losing all his livestock, he learns of the simultaneous death of all his ten children. Job’s profound grief was evidenced in his response: he “tore his robe and shaved his head” (1:20). His words in that painful hour make me think Job knew the practice of gratitude, for he acknowledges that God had given him everything he’d lost (V 21). How else could he worship in the midst of such incapacitating grief?

The practice of daily gratitude can’t erase the magnitude of pain we feel in seasons of loss. Job questioned and grappled through his grief as the rest of the book describes. But recognizing God’s goodness to us—in even the smallest of ways—c an prepare us to kneel in worship before our all-powerful God in the darkest hours of our earthly lives. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

소망이 우리의 전략이다

이 글을 쓰고 있을 즈음, 내가 응원하는 미식축구팀이 8연패를 당했습니다. 경기마다 지니까, 이번 시즌 동안 만회할 희망이 없어 보입니다. 감독은 매주 변화를 시도했지만 계속 이기지 못했습니다. 나는 단순히 어떤 결과를 바란다고 해서 그것을 얻게 되는 것은 아니라고 직장 동료와 농담하면서, “희망이 전략은 아니지.”라고 한마디 했습니다.

미 식 축 구 의 경 우 에 는 나 의 그 말이 맞지만, 우리의 영적 생활에서는 정반대입니다. 하나님 안에서 소망을 품는 것이 전략일 뿐만 아니라, 믿음과 신뢰로 그분께 의지하는 것이 ‘유일한’ 전략입니다. 이 세상은 우리를 자주 실망시키지만, 소망을 가지면 힘든 시기에 우리가 하나님의 진리와 능력 안에 닻을 내릴 수 있게 해줍니다.

미가는 이 사실을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 이스라엘이 하나님으로부터 등을 돌린 것을 보며 가슴이 찢어졌습니다. “재앙이로다 나여......경건한 자가 세상에서 끊어졌고, 정직한 자가 사람들 가운데 없도다”(미가 7:1-2). 그러고 나서 미가는 다시 참된 소망에 집중했습니다. “오직 나는 여호와를 우러러보며 나를 구원하시는 하나님을 바라보나니 나의 하나님이 나에게 귀를 기울이시리로다”(7절).

어떻게 하면 혹독한 때에 소망을 잃지 않고 살아갈 수 있을까요? 미가의 대답은 바라보고 기다리고 기도하고 기억하라는 것입니다. 상황이 우리가 감당할 수 없을 때라도 하나님은 우리의 울부짖음을 들으십니다. 그런 순간에, 하나님을 믿는 소망에 매어달려 행동하는 것이 우리의 전략입니다. 그것은 인생의 폭풍을 견딜 수 있도록 우리를
도와주는 유일한 전략입니다.

Hope Is Our Strategy

My favorite football team has lost eight consecutive games as I write this. With each loss, it’s harder to hope this season can be redeemed for them. The coach has made changes weekly, but they haven’t resulted in wins. Talking with my coworkers, I’ve joked that merely wanting a different outcome can’t guarantee it. “Hope is not a strategy,” I’ve quipped.

That’s true in football. But in our spiritual lives, it’s just the opposite. Not only is cultivating hope in God a strategy, but clinging to Him in faith and trust is the only strategy. This world often disappoints us, but hope can anchor us in God’s truth and power during the turbulent times.

Micah understood this reality. He was heartbroken by how Israel had turned away from God. “What misery is mine! . . . The faithful have been swept from the land; not one upright person remains” (7:1–2). But then he refocused on his true hope: “But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD , I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me” (V 7).

What does it take to maintain hope in harsh times? Micah shows us: Watching. Waiting. Praying. Remembering. God hears our cries even when our circumstances are overwhelming. In these moments, clinging to and acting in response to our hope in God is our strategy, the only strategy that will help us weather life’s storms. ADAM HOLZ

두려워하지 말라!

성경을 보면 천사가 나타나 하는 첫마디 말은 대개 “두려워하지 말라!”입니다. 별로 놀랄 일도 아닙니다. 초자연적인 존재가 지구상에 나타난 것을 본 사람들이라면 누구나 두려워하기 때문입니다. 그러나 누가복음에 나오는 하나님은 무섭지 않은 모습으로 나타나셨습니다. 동물들과 함께 태어나 구유에 누우신 예수님의 모습 속에서 우리는 하나님이 두려워할 필요가 없는 모습으로 오신 것을 봅니다. 갓난아기보다 무섭지 않은 것이 어디 있을까요?

세상에 오신 예수님은 하나님이시며 동시에 인간이십니다. 하나님이신 예수님은 기적을 행하고 죄를 용서하시며, 죽음을 이기시고 미래를 예언하실 수 있었습니다. 그러나 그동안 눈부신 구름이나 불기둥으로 나타나신 하나님의 이미지만 보아 온 유대인들은 사람으로 오신 예수님의 모습을 보면서 매우 혼란스러워했습니다. 베들레헴에서 태어난 한 아기가, 목수의 아들이, 나사렛 출신의 남자가 어떻게 하나님이 보내신 메시아가 될 수 있단 말입니까?

왜 하나님은 인간의 모습을 취하신 것일까요? 성전의 랍비들과 토론하는 열두 살 소년의 예수님 모습에서 한 가지 단서를 찾을 수 있습니다. “듣는 자가 다 그 지혜와 대답을 놀랍게 여기더라”(2:47)고 누가는 기록합니다. 처음으로 보통 사람들이 눈에 보이는 하나님과 대화를 나눌 수 있었던 것입니다.

예수님은 그의 부모, 랍비, 가난한 과부 등, 누구와도 이야기하실 수 있습니다. “두려워하지 말라!”고 미리 말씀하실 필요도 없이 말입니다. 그런 예수님을 통해 하나님은 우리에게 가까이 다가오십니다.

Don’t Be Afraid!

Nearly every time an angel appears in the Bible, the first words he says are “Don’t be afraid!” Little wonder. When the supernatural makes contact with planet Earth, it usually leaves the human observers flat on their faces in fear. But Luke tells of God making an appearance in a form that doesn’t frighten. In Jesus, born with the animals and laid in a feeding trough, God takes an approach that we need not fear. What could be less scary than a newborn baby?

On Earth Jesus is both God and man. As God, He can work miracles, forgive sins, conquer death, and predict the future. But for Jews accustomed to images of God as a bright cloud or pillar of fire, Jesus also causes much confusion. How could a baby in Bethlehem, a carpenter’s son, a man from Nazareth, be the Messiah from God?

Why does God take on human form? The scene of twelve-year-old Jesus debating rabbis in the temple gives one clue. “Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers,” Luke tells us (2:47). For the first time, ordinary people could hold a conversation with God in visible form.

Jesus can talk to anyone—His parents, a rabbi, a poor widow—without first having to announce, “Don’t be afraid!” In Jesus, God draws near. PHILIP YANCEY

지도자를 따라가기

우리 집 위로 전투기 세 대가 굉음을 내며 하늘을 가로질러 날아갑니다. 서로 아주 가깝게 편대비행을 하고 있어서 마치 한 대가 날아가는 것 같이 보입니다. 내가 “우와” 하고 감탄하자 남편 댄도 “정말 멋지다”고 말합니다. 우리 집 근처에 공군기지가 있어서 그런 광경을 드물지 않게 봅니다.

그러나 전투기들이 그렇게 날아가는 광경을 볼 때마다 생각해봅니다. ‘어떻게 저렇게 가까이 붙어서 날면서 통제력을 잃지 않을 수 있을까?’ 내가 알게 된 한 가지 분명한 이유는 겸손입니다. 양쪽의 조종사들은 선두 조종사가 한 치의 오차도 없이 정확한 속도와 궤적을 유지하며 날고 있다는 것을 믿고, 방향을 바꾸거나 진로에 대한 어떠한 결정도 선두 조종사에게 의심 없이 맡긴 채 대형을 이루어 바짝 붙어 따라갑니다. 그 결과, 더욱 강력한 팀을 이루게 되는 것입니다.

예수님을 따르는 사람들의 경우도 크게 다르지 않습니다. 주님은 “아무든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 날마다 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라”(누가복음 9:23) 고 말씀하십니다.

주님이 가신 길은 따르기엔 힘든 자기 부인의 길이요 고난의 길입니다. 그러므로 주님의 참 제자가 되기 위해서는 이기적인 욕구를 버리고 매일 영적인 부담을 짊어지면서 주님을 가까이 따라야 합니다. 예를 들면, 우리 자신보다 다른 사람들을 먼저 섬겨야 하는 것입니다.

이렇게 겸손하게 하나님과 가까이 동행하는 것은 아주 멋진 광경입니다. 하나님의 인도하심을 따라가며 아주 가까이 머물러 있으면 우리도 예수님과 하나로 보일 수 있습니다. 그렇게 되면 사람들에게 우리는 보이지 않고 주님의 모습이 보일 것입니다. 그 광경을 한 마디로 표현하면 “우와!” 입니다.

Following the Leader

In the sky over our house, three fighter jets scream through the sky—flying in formation so close together they appear to be one. “Wow,” I say to my husband, Dan. “Impressive,” he agrees. We live near an Air Force base and it’s not unusual to see such sights.

Every time these jets fly over, however, I have the same question: how can they fly so close together and not lose control? One obvious reason, I learned, is humility. Trusting that the lead pilot is traveling at precisely the correct speed and trajectory, the wing pilots surrender any desire to switch directions or question their leader’s path. Instead, they get in formation and closely follow. The result? A more powerful team.

It’s no different for followers of Jesus. He says, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (LUKE 9:23).

His path was one of self-denial and suffering, which can be hard to follow. But to be His effective disciples, we too are invited to put aside selfish desires and pick up spiritual burdens daily—serving others first instead of ourselves, for example—as we closely follow Him.

It’s quite a sight, this humbling, close walk with God. Following His lead, and staying so close, we can appear with Christ as one. Then others won’t see us, they’ll see Him. There’s a simple word for what that looks like: “Wow!” PATRICIA RAYBON
