후한 선물을 받았을 때

익명의 기부처에서 1만 달러를 받은 리디아는 그 돈을 자신에게는 거의 쓰지 않고 동료와 가족과 홍수 피해자, 자선 단체에 아끼지 않고 기부했습니다. 리디아는 2백 명을 대상으로 아무 조건 없이 은행 송금으로 1만 달러를 기부했을 때 사람들이 어떻게 반응하는지 알아보는 한 연구 프로그램에 자신도 모르게 들어가 있었습니다. 그 연구에 따르면 선물로 받은 돈의 ‘2/3 이상’이 다시 다른 사람들에게 돌아간 것으로 나타났습니다. 비영리 미디어 기관 TED의 책임자 크리스 앤더슨은 이 이야기를 전하면서 “이 결과에 의하면... 우리 인간은 후한 대접을 받으면 자신도 그렇게 한다” 고 설명했습니다.

아끼지 않고 나누며 사는 사람들은 자신을 만드신 하나님의 마음을 삶으로 보여준다는 것을 우리는 성경을 통해 배웁니다. 하나님은 어떤 사람들에게만이 아니라 누구에게나, 심지어 “은혜를 모르는 자와 악한 자” (누가복음 6:35)에게도 후히 주시고 자비롭고 친절하십니다. 그래서 예수님은 하나님의 성품을 보여주려는 사람은 원수까지도 “사랑하고” “선대하며” “아무것도 바라지 말고 꾸어주라”고 가르치셨습니다(32-35절).

우리가 되돌려 받을 기대를 하지 않고 베풀 때, 그것이 우리에게 결코 해가 되지 않는 삶의 방식이라는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 예수님도 이 점에 대해 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “주라 그리하면 너희에게 줄 것이니... 너희가 헤아리는 그 헤아림으로 너희도 헤아림을 도로 받을 것이니라”(38절). 후히 주시는 하나님을 따라 우리도 후히 나눌 때 우리 삶은 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 면에서 풍요로워질 것입니다.

RESPONDING TO GENEROSITY

When Lydia was gifted $10,000 by anonymous donors, she spent little of it on herself. Instead, she gave generous gifts to coworkers, family, flood victims, and charities. Lydia, unbeknownst to her, was part of a study following how two hundred people responded to a no-strings-attached gift of $10,000 through a bank transfer. That study found that more than twothirds of that gifted money was given away. Sharing this story, Chris Anderson, head of the TED non-profit media organization, reflected, “It turns out that . . . we human beings are wired to respond to generosity with generosity.”

In Scripture, we find that when people live generously, they reflect the heart of the God who made them. God is generous, merciful, and kind, not just to some but to all—even “to the ungrateful and wicked” (LUKE 6:35). So Jesus instructed those who desire to reflect God’s character to “love,” “do good to,” and “lend to” even enemies “without expecting to get anything back” (VV. 32-35).

When we give without expecting anything back, we’ll find that it’s never a way of life that harms us. Jesus pointed this out too, saying, “Give, and it will be given to you. . . . With the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (V. 38). When we respond to God’s generosity by living generously, we find we’re enriched in countless ways.

무지개와 하나님의 약속

나이아가라 폭포의 놀라운 광경을 서서 바라보고 있는데 다른 관광객들이 갑자기 사진을 찍기 시작하는 것이었습니다. 사람들이 보는 방향을 바라보니 강을 가로질러 아치형의 무지개가 떠 있었습니다. 무지개는 호스슈 폭포 아래에서 시작해 아메리칸 폭포 밑에서 끝나는 것 같았습니다.

원래 무지개는 끝나는 지점이 없습니다. 무지개는 완전한 원형인데 나는 그 모양을 딱 한 번 본 적이 있습니다. 그 때 비행기 창밖을 내다보고 있었는데 마침 해가 꼭 맞는 방향에 위치하면서 구름 위 멀리에 완전 원형을 갖춘 무지개가 나타났습니다. 비행기가 방향을 틀면서 그 원이 사라질 때까지 나는 황홀하게 앉아서 그 광경을 바라보았습니다.

그 무지개를 보며 여러 가지 생각이 났습니다. 하나님에게는 시작도 끝도 없으시며 우리가 어디에 있든지 그분의 약속을 보여주신다는 생각도 했습니다. 무한하고 영원하신 우리 하나님은 다시는 이 땅의 홍수로 “모든 육체를 멸하지” 않겠다는 언약의 증거(15절)로 “[그분의] 무지개를 구름 속에 두셨습니다” (창세기 9:13). 지금도 우리 창조주 하나님은 그분의 피조물인 우리에게 무지개를 통해 그 약속을 잊지 않게 하십니다(13-16절).

이사야 40장 28절은 “영원하신 하나님 여호와, 땅 끝까지 창조하신 이는... 명철이 한이 없으시다”고 말합니다. 생각만해도 놀랍습니다! 우리는 우리와의 약속을 지키시는 하나님에 대해 영원히 배워도 다 배우지 못하며, 그분의 명철하심의 깊이에 결코 이르지 못할 것입니다.

RAINBOWS AND GOD’S PROMISES

While I stood watching the amazing power of Niagara Falls, I noticed that other tourists suddenly began taking photos. Looking in the same direction, I saw a rainbow had appeared—arching across the river. It seemed to begin at the base of the Horseshoe Falls, ending at the base of the American Falls.

In reality, there’s no end to a rainbow. A rainbow is a full circle, something I’ve seen only once. I was gazing out an airplane window when the sun—shining in just the right direction—revealed a fullcircle rainbow in the distance above the clouds. I sat enthralled with the sight until the plane turned and the circle disappeared.

That rainbow gave me much to consider—how God has no beginning or end, and that He reveals His promises to us no matter where we are. Our never-ending, eternal God “set [His] rainbow in the clouds” (GENESIS 9:13) as a promise to never flood the earth again “to destroy all life” (V. 15). Even today, our Creator shares His reminder of that promise with us, His creation (VV. 13-16).

Isaiah 40:28 says, “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. . . . No one can measure the depths of his understanding” (nlt). What an amazing thought! We will have eternity to learn about our promise keeper, and we’ll never reach the ultimate depth of His understanding.

시냇가에 심기다

빌은 은퇴해 혼자 사는 나이 많은 분인데 얼마전부터는 운전하는 것도 그만두어야 했습니다. 그래서 그에게는 식료품을 사고 처방약을 받고 주일에 교회 갈 때에 도움이 필요합니다. “그런데 그거 알아요?” 빌이 말합니다. “나는 집에서 지내는 것이 참 좋아요. 온종일 인터넷에서 무료 찬양과 텔레비전에서 나오는 성경공부를 즐기고 있어요.” 빌은 성경말씀과 기도와 찬양 속에서 나날을 보내고 있습니다.

우리의 습관들이 우리 마음이 심겨지는 곳에 영향을 미칩니다. 시편 1편은 하나님의 은혜를 입은 자의 습관을 말해주고 있습니다. 그들은 하나님의 진리를 기뻐하고, 그것을 자주 묵상하며, 그래서 거스르는 세상의 패턴을 따르지 않습니다 (1-2절). 고난은 누구에게나 찾아오지만, 하나님의 법도 위에 세워진 삶은 “시냇가에 심은 나무가... 그 잎사귀가 마르지 아니함”(3절)과 같습니다. 각자 인생에서 처한 시절에 따라 우리는 하루에 몇 시간씩 성경공부를 하기가 어려울 수도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 예수님은 그분께 나아오는 목마른 자들은 누구나 갈증이 해소되고, 성령님이 그분을 따르는 자들을 강같이 채워 주신다고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 7:37-39). 우리는 찬양과 말씀으로, 그리고 다른 이들을 돌보는 일을 통해, 또한 일하면서 하나님과 대화하며, 그리고 실수했을 때에 용서를 구하면서 우리 마음을 생명수에 담글 수 있습니다.

하나님의 지혜를 따르는 것은 기름진 토양에 우리 마음을 심는 것과 같습니다. 그런 삶은 의롭다고 칭함을 받으며, 하나님께서 그 삶을 지켜주십니다 (시편 1:6).

PLANTED BY THE STREAM

Bill is an older retired gentleman who lives alone and recently had to give up driving. He needs help to pick up groceries, prescriptions, and get to church on Sundays. “But you know what,” says Bill, “I love my days at home. I enjoy free worship music online and Bible teaching on the TV all day long.” Bill spends his days surrounded by Scripture, prayer, and praise.

The habits we keep influence where our hearts are planted. Psalm 1 describes the habits of someone who has found favor in God: they delight in His truth, meditate on it often, and therefore do not follow the rebellious pattern of the world (VV. 1-2). Hardship will come to everyone, but a life established in the ways of God “is like a tree planted by streams of water . . . whose leaf does not wither” (V. 3). Depending on our season of life, we might not be able to spend hours a day in Bible study. However, Jesus said He satisfies anyone who is thirsty that comes to Him, and the Holy Spirit fills His followers like a river (JOHN 7:37-39). We can steep our hearts in living water through praise and Scripture, and also through caring for others, talking to God while we work, and asking for forgiveness when we mess up.

Following the wisdom of God plants our hearts in fertile soil. That life gets called righteous, and God watches over it (PSALM 1:6).

예수님 사랑의 유산

스웨덴에는 ‘d stadning’이라는 개념이 있습니다. 그것은 문자 그대로 “깨끗이 치우고 죽기”라는 뜻입니다. 이것은 나이가 들면서 “물건들” 은 그만 들여놓고 평생 쌓아온 필요없는 것들을 없애기 시작한다는 개념입니다. “스웨덴식 깨끗이 치우고 죽기”가 사실상 자녀와 친구들에 대한 사랑의 선물인 이유가 그렇게 하면 우리가 남긴 것들을 다시 뒤적거리고 정리해야 하는 일을 안해도 되기 때문입니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 어느 나이가 되면 우리의 유산, 곧 무엇을 뒤에 남길 지를 생각하게 됩니다. 이것은 대개 돈이나 유산, 기부 등의 관점에서 다루어지는데, 그것에 대해서는 여러 많은 의견들이 있습니다. 그러나 마지막 시간을 제자들과 함께 보내신 예수님을 생각해 보는 것도 도움이 될 수 있을 것입니다. “내가 가는 곳에 네가 지금은 따라올 수 없으나 후에는 따라오리라” (요한복음 13:36)고 하신 예수님은 두 구절(34-35절)에서 ‘사랑’이라는 말을 네 번이나 사용하셨습니다. 이렇게 예수님의 유산은 사랑이었습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(34절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

우리도 “스웨덴식 깨끗이 치우고 죽기” 같은 것을 하여 불필요한 것들은 없애고 가장 중요한 것들만 남기면 좋을 것입니다. 그러나 가장 중요한 것은 물건이나 돈이 아닙니다. 우리가 남길 수 있는 가장 중요한 유산은 예수님을 향한 우리의 사랑입니다. 자녀와 친구들이 우리를 예수님을 사랑했던 사람으로 기억한다면 그것이 바로 최고의 선물이 될 것입니다. 그것으로 “뒤에 남긴 것” 이라는 말에 새로운 의미가 더해질 것입니다.

LEGACY OF LOVE IN JESUS

In Sweden, there’s a concept known as döstädning. It literally means “death cleaning.” The idea is that as we grow older, we should stop accumulating “stuff” and begin to cut out the clutter we have amassed throughout our lives. “Swedish death cleaning” is actually a gift of love to children and friends, for it simplifies for them the task of wading through what we leave behind.

As believers in Jesus, at a certain age we think about our legacy— what survives us. This is often framed in terms of money, inheritance, or charitable giving—and there’s much to be said for that. But it might be helpful to look at Jesus in His final hours with His disciples: “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later” (JOHN 13:36). In two verses (VV. 34-35), He uses the word love or loved four times—His legacy was love. He told them: “As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (V. 34).

It may be good to do some “Swedish death cleaning” in our lives, removing clutter to leave behind only the most important things. But it really isn’t about things or money. The most important legacy you can leave behind is your love for Jesus. When children and friends remember you as one who loved Jesus, that’s the best gift of all. It gives new meaning to the phrase “left behind.”

다시 일어서기

나는 십대 때 피겨 스케이팅에 푹 빠졌습니다. 빠른 회전과 높은 점프, 완벽한 포즈 등, 빙판 위에서 예술성과 운동성이 조화를 이루는 모습에 매료된 것입니다. 많은 프로 스케이터들의 공연을 본 나에게 마침내 아이스 스케이팅 그룹 레슨을 받을 기회가 생겼습니다. 빙판에서 미끄러지듯 나가다 멈추는 방법을 배우면서 우리는 모든 스케이터에게 가장 중요한 기술의 하나인 넘어졌다 빠르게 일어나는 법도 배웠습니다. 나중에 개인 레슨으로 여러 회전 기술과 점프를 배웠지만, 넘어졌다가 일어나는 기본기는 언제나 필요했습니다.

우리는 운동선수가 되어야만 “넘어지는 것”이 삶의 일부임을 아는 것은 아닙니다. 우리는 죄를 지어 넘어질 수도 있고, 실수해 휘청거릴 때도 있으며, 감당하기 힘든 주위 상황으로 엎드러질 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 이런 저런 모습으로 마귀의 공격을 받고 있는 것을 알게 될 때도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 “우리는... 박해를 받아도 버린 바 되지 아니하며 거꾸러뜨림을 당하여도 망하지 아니합니다”(고린도후서 4:8-9). 우리는 어떤 이유로든 누구나 인생에서 넘어지고 실패를 맛봅니다.

그러나 우리는 패배나 수치심, 후회 속에 살아야 하는 게 아닙니다. 원수가 우리 근처에 도사리며 우리를 약탈하려고 할 때(잠언 24:15), 우리는 하나님이 우리를 위해 싸우시며 다시 일어날 수 있게 도우신다는 것을 잊지 말아야 합니다. “의인은 일곱 번을 넘어지더라도 다시 일어납니다”(16절, 새번역).

우리가 넘어졌을 때에는 재빨리 하나님께로 돌이켜 다시 일어날 힘을 주시는 하나님께 시선을 고정하도록 합시다.

GETTING BACK UP

As a teen, I was enthralled with the sport of figure skating. I loved the blend of artistry and athleticism on ice, with the fast spins, high jumps, and perfect poses. After watching many professional skaters perform, I finally got the opportunity to go ice skating and be part of a group lesson. Along with learning how to glide and stop, we learned some of the most important skills for a skater at any level—how to fall and get back up quickly. Later, I learned many spins and jumps in private lessons, but always had to rely on the basics of how to get up after a fall.

We don’t have to be athletes to know that “falling” is part of life. Perhaps we fall because we’ve sinned, we stumble due to a mistake, or we get knocked down by an overwhelming circumstance. Maybe we find ourselves being attacked by the devil one way or another. “We are . . . persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:8-9). No matter the reason, we all fall and experience failure in life.

But we’re not meant to live in defeat, shame, or regret. When the enemy is lurking nearby and trying to plunder from us (PROVERBS 24:15), we need to remember that God is fighting for us and will help us get back up, “for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again” (V. 16).

When we fall, let’s quickly turn to God and fix our eyes on Him who gives us the strength to get back up.

단순한 진리

아내와 나는 자전거를 탈 때 우리가 페달로 밟고 온 거리가 얼마나 되는지 알고 싶었습니다. 그래서 자전거 가게에 가서 주행 거리를 알 수 있는 기기를 사서 집에 가져와 작동시키려는데 그리 쉽지가 않았습니다.

그래서 자전거 가게로 다시 가져갔더니 기기를 판 사람이 그 자리에서 바로 작동시켰습니다. 내가 생각했던 것만큼 어렵지 않았던 것입니다.

우리 삶에서도 새로운 물건이나 새로운 아이디어가 복잡해 보일 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 구원에 대해 생각해 보십시오. 어떤 사람은 하나님의 자녀가 되는 것을 복잡한 것으로 생각할 수도 있습니다.

그러나 성경은 이렇게 간단히 말합니다. “주 예수를 믿으라 그리하면 너와 네 집이 구원을 받으리라”(사도행전 16:31). 거기에는 지켜야 할 어떤 규칙이나, 풀어야 할 비밀 같은 것이 없습니다.

진리는 다음과 같이 단순합니다. 우리는 모두 죄를 지어(로마서 3:23), 우리의 죄로 인한 벌, 곧 죽음과 하나님으로부터의 영원한 분리에서 우리를 구원하시기 위해 예수님이 이 세상에 오셨습니다(마태복음 1:21; 베드로전서 2:24). 그 예수님이 죽음에서 다시 살아나셨습니다(로마서 10:9). 그리고 우리는 예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 이 일을 믿음으로 영적 죽음에서 영원한 생명으로 구원을 받게 됩니다(요한복음 3:16).

예수님을 단순하게 신뢰하고 믿는 것이 어떤 것인지 한번 생각해 보십시오. 예수님이 당신에게 “생명을... 풍성히”(요한복음 10:10) 주시는 것을 받으십시오.

THE SIMPLE TRUTH

When my wife and I go biking, we like to know how many miles we’ve pedaled. So, I went to a bike shop to buy an odometer and came home with a minicomputer that I discovered was a bit too complicated to program.

I headed back to the bike shop, where the person who sold it to me had it working in no time. I realized it wasn’t as difficult to understand as I thought.

In life, new things and new ideas can seem complicated. Think about salvation, for instance. Some people might think becoming a child of God is complicated.

Yet, the Bible spells it out in simple terms: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (ACTS 16:31). No set of rules to follow. No mysteries to solve.

Here’s the simple truth: We’ve all sinned (ROMANS 3:23). Jesus came to earth to save us from the penalty of our sin—death and eternal separation from Him (MATTHEW 1:21; 1 PETER 2:24). He arose from the dead (ROMANS 10:9). And we’re saved from spiritual death to eternal life by trusting in what He did for us (JOHN 3:16).

Consider what it will mean for you to simply trust and believe in Jesus. Let Him give you “life . . . to the full” (JOHN 10:10). DAVE BRANON

하나님 안에서 사랑을 찾음

벤은 어렸을 때 “너는 커서 어떤 사람이 되고 싶니?”라고 하면 “데이브 형처럼 되고 싶어요”라고 말하곤 했습니다. 벤의 형은 운동도 잘하고 사교적이고 우등생이었습니다. 반면에 벤은 “운동도 잘 못하고 소심하고 학습장애로 고생했어요. 언제나 데이브 형과 가깝게 지내고 싶었지만 형은 그렇지 않았어요. 형은 나더러 ‘재미없는 놈’이라고 불렀어요”라고 말합니다.

벤은 형의 사랑을 얻어보려고 오랫동안 애를 썼지만 아무 소용이 없었습니다. 그러나 예수님을 따르는 사람이 되면서 벤은 형 대신 구주 예수님의 사랑 안에서 안식을 찾게 되었습니다.

야곱의 첫째 아내 레아도 남편의 사랑을 얻기 위해 많은 시간을 보냈지만 (창세기 29:32-35) 야곱은 여전히 라헬에게만 마음을 주었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 레아의 고통을 보시고 레아가 살면서 거부당한 것을 보상해주셨습니다. 하나님은 레아에게 복을 주어 어머니가 되게 하심으로 당시 문화 속에서 큰 명예를 얻게 하셨습니다(31절). 남편이 보려고도 들으려고도 하지 않았던 레아를 하나님께서 사랑으로 바라보고 들어주신 것입니다(32-33절). 레아는 딸 하나와 여섯 아들을 낳았고(35:23), 그 중 한 아들이 바로 예수님의 조상인 유다였습니다. 레아는 유다가 태어날 때 “내가 이제는 여호와를 찬송하리로다” (29:35)라고 말했습니다. 레아는 가나안에서 오래도록 살다가 야곱의 가족과 함께 영예롭게 묻혔습니다(49:29-32).

우리가 거절을 당할 때에는 레아의 이야기에서 위로를 얻읍시다. 우리의 결핍을 채워주시는 하나님의 사랑 안에서 우리는 안식을 누릴 수 있습니다.

FINDING LOVE IN GOD

As a child, when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Ben would say, “I want to be like Dave.” Ben’s older brother was athletic, sociable, and an honor student. Ben, on the other hand, says, "I was clumsy in sports, timid, and struggled with a learning disability. I'd always wanted a close relationship with Dave, but he didn't. He called me 'the boring one.'"

Ben spent much of his life pursuing his older brother's love in vain. It was only when Ben became a follower of Jesus that he learned to rest in the love of his Savior instead.

Leah, the first wife of Jacob, spent much of her life pursuing her husband's love (GENESIS 29:32-35). Jacob, however, remained devoted to Rachel. But God saw Leah's plight and made up for the rejection in her life. He blessed her by allowing her to be a mother, a great honor in her culture at that time (V.31). Leah, unseen and unheard by her husband, was lovingly seen and heard by God (VV. 32-33). She gave birth to a daughter and six sons (35:23), one of whom was Judah, a forefather of Jesus Himself. She said at his birth, "This time I will praise the LORD" (29:35). Leah lived a long life in Canaan and was buried in a place of honor - with Jacob's family (49:29-32).

When we experience rejection, let's find comfort in Leah's story. We can rest in the love of God, who makes up for what we lack.

거짓 평점을 주지 맙시다

같이 차를 타고 가던 손님이 자기는 세상에서 가장 냄새나는 과일을 먹는 운전기사, 여자친구와 다투는 운전기사, 그리고 다단계 금융 사기에 돈을 투자하라고 권하는 운전기사를 만났던 것이 힘들었다고 이야기했습니다. 그러나 그는 그 운전기사들에게 낮은 평점이 아니라 별 5 개씩을 주었다고 합니다. “다들 좋은 사람들로 보였어요. 내가 나쁜 평점을 주면 앱에서 쫓겨날까봐 그랬지요.” 그는 운전기사들과 다른 사람들에게 진실을 감추고 거짓 리뷰를 보낸 것입니다.

우리는 여러 가지 이유로 다른 사람들에게 진실을 말하지 않을 수 있습니다. 그러나 바울 사도는 에베소의 믿는 사람들에게 그리스도 안에서 새로운 피조물이 된 자들로서 서로 사랑으로 진실을 말하라고 격려했습니다. 그러려면 “의와 거룩함”(에베소서 4:24)의 습관을 기르고, 하나님을 위해 구별되고 하나님의 방법으로 살아야 한다고 했습니다. 그리고 거짓은 서로를 분열시키고 방해하는 반면, 진실은 믿는 사람들을 하나 되게 하기 때문에 서로 거짓말 대신 진실을 말하라고 했습니다. 그는 “각각 그 이웃과 더불어 참된 것을 말하라 이는 우리가 서로 지체가 됨이라”(25절)고 썼습니다.

예수님은 믿는 사람들 사이에 연합을 해칠 수 있는 거짓말과 서로 “거짓 평점”을 주려는 마음을 극복할 용기를 주십니다. 예수님의 인도하심을 따라 사랑의 삶을 살 때, “친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며”(32절) 진실을 말할 수 있는 삶을 살게 될 것입니다.

NO FAKE RATINGS

A ride-sharing customer shared that he had endured a driver eating the world’s smelliest fruit, another driver who was bickering with a girlfriend, and one who tried to get him to invest money in a Ponzi scheme. In each case, instead of a poor rating, he gave the drivers five stars. He explained, “They all seemed like nice people. I didn’t want them to be kicked off the app over my bad rating.” He gave false reviews—keeping the truth from the drivers . . . and others.

For different reasons, we might withhold the truth from others. But the apostle Paul encouraged the Ephesian believers to lovingly speak the truth to one another as new creatures in Christ. This required cultivating habits of “righteousness and holiness” (EPHESIANS 4:24)—living lives that were set apart for Him and that reflected His ways. They were to replace lying with telling one another the truth because lies divide and disrupt while truth unites us as believers. He wrote, “Each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” (V. 25).

Jesus empowers us with the courage to resist lying and giving one another “fake ratings”—things that can disrupt our unity with other believers. Living a life of love, as He guides us, will lead to our sharing “kind and compassionate” expressions of truth (V. 32).

하나님 안에서 지혜로운 자제

미국 남북전쟁 때 남부군의 로버트 리 장군은 게티즈버그에서 결정적인 패배를 당해(1863) 그의 패전군을 남부군 영토로 퇴각시키려 했으나 폭우로 포토맥 강이 불어 퇴각을 못하고 있었습니다. 에이브러햄 링컨 대통령은 조지 미드 장군이 공격에 나설 것을 강하게 바랐으나, 미드 장군은 리 장군의 군대만큼이나 지쳐 있었던 그의 군대에게 휴식을 취하게 했습니다.

링컨은 깃펜을 들어 편지에 미드 장군이 리 장군을 쫓아가지 않은 것에 대해 “말할 수 없이 괴롭다”고 솔직한 심경을 적었습니다. 그런데 편지의 봉투에는 대통령의 친필로 “미드 장군 앞으로, 보내지 않았음, 서명하지 않았음”이라고 적혀 있습니다. 대통령은 실제로 그 편지를 보내지 않았습니다.

WISE RESTRAINT IN GOD

Following the South’s catastrophic loss at Gettysburg in the American Civil War (1863), General Robert E. Lee led his battered troops back to Southern territory. Heavy rains flooded the Potomac River, blocking his retreat. President Abraham Lincoln urged General George Meade to attack. But Meade’s men were just as weary as Lee’s. He rested his troops.

Lincoln picked up his quill and wrote a letter in which he confessed he was “distressed immeasurably” at Meade’s reluctance to pursue Lee. On the envelope are these words in the president’s handwriting: “To Gen. Meade, never sent, or signed.” And indeed, it never was.

Long before Lincoln, another great leader grasped the importance of reining in our emotions. Anger, no matter how justified, is a dangerously powerful force. “Do you see someone who speaks in haste?” King Solomon asked. “There is more hope for a fool than for them” (PROVERBS 29:20). Solomon knew that “by justice a king gives a country stability” (V. 4). He also understood that “fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end” (V. 11).

And in the end, not sending that letter prevented Lincoln from demoralizing his top general, helped win a necessary war, and contributed to the healing of a nation. We do well to learn from examples like his of wise restraint.

하나님의 자비를 본받아

한 핀란드 병사가 러시아와의 3개월 겨울 전쟁(1939-1940) 중에 부상을 입고 전쟁터에 쓰러져 있었습니다. 한 러시아 병사가 소총을 겨누며 그의 앞으로 걸어오자 핀란드 병사는 이제 죽었구나라고 생각했습니다. 그러나 러시아 병사는 그에게 구급 상자를 건네주고는 그냥 지나갔습니다. 놀랍게도 그 핀란드 병사는 나중에 비슷한 상황에 처하게 되었는데, 역할만 바뀌어 이번에는 한 러시아 병사가 전투 현장에 부상을 입고 무방비상태로 누워있었습니다. 핀란드 병사는 그에게 의료품을 건네주고 그냥 지나갔습니다.

예수님은 우리의 삶의 중심에 두고 살아야 할 원칙을 주셨습니다. 그것은 “그러므로 무엇이든지 남에게 대접을 받고자 하는 대로 너희도 남을 대접하라” (마태복음 7:12)는 말씀입니다. 믿는 사람들이 이 단순한 한 가지 원칙만 지킨다면 세상이 얼마나 달라질지 상상이 되시나요? 우리가 함께 예수님께서 명하신 지혜의 말씀에 순종한다면 얼마나 많은 억압이 사라질 수 있을지 계산이 되시나요? 예수님의 인도하심을 따라 우리가 받고 싶은 사랑과 자비를 다른 사람들에게 동일하게 베풀수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요? 다른 사람들에게 “좋은 선물을 주는 것”은 우리를 사랑하셔서 좋은 것으로 주시는(11절) 하나님 아버지의 마음을 보여주는 것입니다.

다른 사람을 대할 때 그냥 적이나 모르는 사람, 아니면 자원이나 기회를 놓고 경쟁하는 사람으로 보지 않는 것이 중요합니다. 반대로 그들에게도 우리와 똑같이 자비와 친절이 필요하다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그럴 때 우리의 태도와 관점이 바뀌고 하나님의 공급하심을 따라 우리에게 거저 주신 사랑을 다른 이들에게도 아낌없이 줄 수 있게 됩니다.

REFLECTING GOD’S MERCY

A Finnish soldier in the three-month Winter War with Russia (1939-1940) lay wounded on the battlefield. A Russian soldier walked his way, pointing his rifle. The Finn was certain he’d met his end. However, the Russian handed him a medic kit, then kept moving. Remarkably, the Finn later found himself in a similar situation, only the roles were reversed—a Russian soldier lay wounded and helpless on the battlefield. The Finn handed him medical supplies and walked on.

Jesus gave us a central, guiding principle for our lives: “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you” (MATTHEW 7:12). Can you imagine how different our world would be if believers kept this one simple principle? Can we calculate how much oppression would end if we collectively obeyed Jesus’ wisdom? If only, as He guides us, we would give others the same compassion and mercy we’d hope to receive ourselves. As we “give good gifts” to others, we reflect the heart of our “Father in heaven [who gives] good gifts to those” He loves (V. 11).

It’s vital that we see others as not merely enemies or strangers or people with whom we compete for resources or opportunities. Instead, we should see their need for mercy and kindness just as we need it. And as we do, our posture and perspective will change. Then, as God provides, we can freely offer them the love He’s freely offered to us.
