하늘 정원

런던에 있는 동안 한 친구가 나와 아내 말린을 위해 하늘 정원을 가 볼 수 있게 주선해주었습니다. 런던 상업 지역의 35층 건물 최상층에 위치한 하늘 정원은 유리로 덮은 플랫폼으로 식물과 나무와 꽃들로 가득했습니다. 그러나 정원보다는 하늘에서 보는 광경이 우리의 관심을 끌었습니다. 우리는 500피트(150미터)가 넘는 높이에서 성바오로 대성당과 런던 타워와 다른 곳들을 내려다보며 감탄했습니다. 우리가 살펴본 수도 런던은 놀라움 그 자체였습니다. 그리고 전체를 보아 아는데 도움이 되었습니다.

우리 하나님은 우리가 겪는 일들을 모두 완벽하게 보고 계십니다. 시편 기자는 “여호와께서 그의 높은 성소에서 굽어보시며 땅을 살펴보셨으니 이는 갇힌 자의 탄식을 들으시며 죽이기로 정한 자를 해방하사”(시편 102:19-20)라고 썼습니다.

시편 102편에 나오는 비참한 사람들처럼 우리도 절망 가운데 “신음하며” 괴로움을 안고 현재라는 시간에 갇혀 살 때가 많습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리의 삶을 처음부터 끝까지 다 보고 계십니다. 우리 주님은 우리처럼 갑자기 닥쳐오는 일에 무방비로 당하시는 일은 없습니다. 시편 기자가 내다본 것처럼 모든 것을 다 보고 계시는 하나님은 “죽음에 처한” 사람들까지도 자유롭게 하시는 온전한 구원으로 인도하실 것입니다 (20,27-28절).

힘들 때에는 기억하십시오. 우리는 앞날을 몰라도 주님은 아십니다. 우리 앞의 모든 순간에 주님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Sky Garden

While in London, a friend arranged for my wife Marlene and me to visit the Sky Garden. On the top floor of a thirty-five-story building in London’s business district, the Sky Garden is a glass-encased platform filled with plants, trees, and flowers. But the sky part captured our attention. We gazed down from a height of over 500 feet, admiring St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, and more. Our views of the capital city were breathtaking—providing a helpful lesson on perspective.

Our God has a perfect perspective of everything we experience. The psalmist wrote, “For He looked down from His holy height; from heaven the LORD gazed upon the earth, to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to set free those who were doomed to death” (PSALM 102:19–20 NASB ).

Like the hurting people pictured in Psalm 102, we are often locked into the present with its struggles, “groaning” with despair. But God sees our lives from beginning to end. Our Lord is never caught off guard by the things that can blindside us. As the psalmist anticipated, His perfect perspective will lead to an ultimate rescue that sets free even those “doomed to death” (vv. 20, 27–28).

In difficult moments, remember: We may not know what is coming next, but our Lord does. We can trust Him with every moment that stretches before us.

예수님이 내미는 손

때로는 생활이 너무 바빠집니다. 수업은 어렵고, 일은 힘들고, 화장실 청소를 해야 하고, 커피 데이트도 하루 계획에 들어있습니다. 억지로라도 하루에 몇 분은 성경을 읽으려 했다가도 다음 주에는 하나님과 시간을 더 많이 보내야겠다고 다짐하기에 이릅니다. 그러나 얼마 안 되어 일에 파묻히다 보면 마음이 딴 데로 향하고 하나님께는 어떤 도움을 구하는 것도 다 잊어버립니다.

예수님을 향해 물 위를 걸어가던 베드로는 이내 바람과 파도로 인해 마음이 흐트러졌습니다. 나의 경우처럼 그도 가라앉기 시작했습니다(마태복음 14:29-30). 그러나 베드로가 소리치자 예수님은 즉시 손을 내밀어 그를 붙드셨습니다(30-31절).

나는 너무나 바쁘고 정신없이 지내느라 하나님을 잊어버렸다가 하나님께 아부라도 해야 되겠다고 느낄 때가 있습니다. 그러나 그것은 하나님의 방법이 아닙니다. 예수님을 향해 도움을 청하기만 하면 당장에 손을 내밀어주십니다.

삶이 복잡해져 불안정해지면 하나님이 폭풍 가운데서도 우리와 함께 서 계시다는 사실을 잊기가 쉽습니다. 예수님은 베드로에게 “왜 의심하였느냐”(31절)고 물으셨습니다. 우리가 지금 어떤 일을 겪고 있더라도 예수님이 거기 계십니다. 그리고 어디에나 계십니다. 그분은 어느 순간에라도 손을 내밀어 우리를 구하실 준비가 되어있습니다.

Jesus Reached Out

Sometimes life gets busy—classes are hard, work is exhausting, the bathroom needs to be cleaned, and a coffee date is on the day’s schedule. It gets to the point where I force myself to read the Bible for a few minutes a day and tell myself I’ll spend more time with God next week. But it doesn’t take long before I’m distracted, drowning in the day’s tasks, and forget to ask God for help of any kind.

When Peter was walking on water toward Jesus, he quickly became distracted by the wind and waves. Like me, he began to sink (MATTHEW 14:29–30). But as soon as Peter cried out, “immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him” (VV 30–31).

I often feel as if I have to make it up to God after being so busy and distracted that I lose sight of Him. But that’s not how God works. As soon as we turn to Him for help, Jesus reaches out without hesitation.

When we’re unsettled by the chaos of life, it’s easy to forget that God is standing in the middle of the storm with us. Jesus asked Peter, “Why did you doubt?” (V 31). No matter what we’re going through, He is there. He is here. Next to us at that moment, in this moment, ready to reach out and rescue us.

굶주린 마음

볼일이 있어서 남편과 함께 차를 타고 가면서 전화기로 이메일을 확인하고 있는데 화면에 그 지역 도넛 가게 광고가 뜨는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그 가게는 우리가 막 지나친 도로 오른편에 있던 가게였기 때문입니다. 갑자기 배 속에서 시장하다고 꼬르륵하는 소리가 났습니다. 사업하는 사람들이 신기술을 이용하여 고객을 끌어들이는 방법이 놀라웠습니다.

나는 이메일을 닫으면서 나를 더 가까이 부르시는 하나님의 변함없는 간절한 마음을 생각해보았습니다. 하나님은 내가 어디에 있는지 항상 아시고 내가 무엇을 선택할 때에도 도와주기를 원하십니다. 나에게 이런 질문이 생겼습니다. ‘도넛 생각에 배에서 소리가 난 것처럼 내 마음속에서도 하나님에 갈급하여 그런 소리가 나는가?’

요한복음 6장에서 5천 명을 먹이신 기적을 본 제자들은 예수님에게 “세상에 생명을 주는 그 빵”을 자기들에게 ‘항상’ 달라고 간청합니다(33-34절). 예수님은 35절에서 이렇게 대답하십니다. “나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 자는 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라.” 예수님과의 관계로 우리가 매일의 생활에서 끊임없이 양식을 공급받을 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 놀라운 일인지 모릅니다!

도넛 가게의 광고는 내 몸의 욕구를 겨냥해 보낸 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 언제나 내 마음의 상태를 아시고, 나에게 하나님이 계속 필요하다는 사실을 깨닫게 하고 그분만이 주실 수 있는 양식을 얻게 하십니다.

Heart Hunger

Riding along with my husband on some errands, I scrolled through emails on my phone and was surprised at an incoming advertisement for a local donut shop, a shop we had just passed on the right side of the street. Suddenly my stomach growled with hunger. I marveled at how technology allows vendors to woo us into their establishments.

As I clicked off my email, I mused over God’s constant yearning to draw me closer. He always knows where I am and longs to influence my choices. I wondered, Does my heart growl in desire for Him the way my stomach did over the idea of a donut?

In John 6, following the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, the disciples eagerly ask Jesus to always give them “the bread that . . . gives life to the world” (VV 33–34). Jesus responds in verse 35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” How amazing that a relationship with Jesus can provide constant nourishment in our everyday lives!

The donut shop’s advertisement targeted my body’s craving, but God’s continuous knowledge of my heart’s condition invites me to recognize my ongoing need for Him and to receive the sustenance only He can provide. ELISA MORGAN

주님께서 말씀하시니

우리는 세상에 고통이 존재하는 이유에 대한 수많은 논쟁을 욥기에서 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 어떠한 논쟁도 욥에게는 그리 도움이 되지 않아 보입니다. 그의 고통은 의심 때문이 아니라 관계로 인한 사태입니다. 그것은 ‘욥이 하나님을 신뢰하는가?’ 하는 문제입니다. 욥은 무엇보다도 한 가지를 원합니다. 자기의 비참한 운명을 설명할 수 있는 그 한 사람의 나타남입니다. 그는 하나님을 직접 만나보기를 원합니다.

이윽고 욥이 바라던 것이 이루어집니다. 하나님이 직접 나타나신 것입니다(욥기 38:1 참조). 하나님은 완벽하게 역설적으로 욥의 친구 엘리후가 욥에게는 하나님이 나타나시기를 기대할 권리가 없다고 길게 설명하고 있는 그때를 택해 나타나셨습니다.

욥도 친구들도, 그 누구도 하나님이 하시는 말씀을 들을 준비가 되어있지 않았습니다. 욥은 질문하고 싶은 것이 많았지만 정작 질문을 한 것은 욥이 아니라 하나님이셨습니다. 하나님은 이렇게 시작하십니다. “너는 대장부처럼 허리를 묶고 내가 네게 묻는 것을 대답할지니라”(3절). 하나님은 앞에서 35개 장에 걸쳐 논쟁했던 고통의 문제는 무시해버리고 자연 세계의 경이로움을 주제로 장엄한 시의 세계를 펼치십니다.

하나님의 말씀은 모든 창조물의 하나님과 욥처럼 초라한 한 인간 사이의 커다란 차이를 잘 말해줍니다. ‘거기 누구 없나요?’라고 물었던 욥의 가장 큰 질문에 하나님이 등장하심은 아주 멋진 대답이 됩니다. 욥은 “나는 깨닫지도 못한 일을 말하였고 스스로 알 수도 없고 헤아리기도 어려운 일을 말하였나이다”(42:3)라고 대답할 수밖에 없었습니다.

The Lord Speaks

We can find nearly every argument in the book of Job about why there is pain in the world, but the arguing never seems to help Job much. His is a crisis of relationship more than a crisis of doubt. Can he trust God? Job wants one thing above all else: an appearance by the one Person who can explain his miserable fate. He wants to meet God Himself, face to face.

Eventually Job gets his wish. God shows up in person (SEE JOB 38:1). He times His entrance with perfect irony, just as Job’s friend Elihu is expounding on why Job has no right to expect a visit from God.

No one—not Job, nor any of his friends—is prepared for what God has to say. Job has saved up a long list of questions, but it is God, not Job, who asks the questions. “Brace yourself like a man,” He begins; “I will question you, and you shall answer me” (V 3). Brushing aside thirty-five chapters’ worth of debates on the problem of pain, God plunges into a majestic poem on the wonders of the natural world.

God’s speech defines the vast difference between the God of all creation and one puny man like Job. His presence spectacularly answers Job’s biggest question: Is anybody out there? Job can only respond, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know” (42:3).

급류타기

래프팅 가이드가 우리 일행을 강가로 인솔하여 구명조끼를 입고 노 잡는 것을 가르쳐주었습니다. 배에 오르자 가이드는 배 무게의 균형을 이루고 급류를 만났을 때 안정을 유지할 수 있게 좌석도 정해주었습니다. 그는 우리 앞에 펼쳐질 항해가 가져다줄 스릴을 강조한 후 급류에서 효과적으로 배를 조종하기 위해 잘 듣고 따라야 할 지시사항들을 자세히 알려주었습니다. 그리고 도중에 긴장된 순간도 있겠지만 매우 신나고도 안전한 여정이 될 것이라고 자신 있게 말했습니다.

우리의 삶은 때로 우리가 원하는 속도보다 더 빠른 물살을 타야하는 급류타기처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 최악의 상황이 일어나는 것이 두려울 때, 하나님께서 이사야 선지자를 통해 이스라엘에게 주신 약속이 우리의 두려운 마음을 다스리는 안내자가 될 수 있습니다. “네가 물 가운데로 지날 때에 내가 너와 함께 할 것이라 강을 건널 때에 물이 너를 침몰하지 못할 것이며” (이사야 43:2). 죄의 결과로 추방당하게 된 이스라엘 백성은 하나님으로부터 버림받았다는 감당키 어려운 두려움에 사로잡혔습니다. 그러나 대신에 하나님은 그들을 사랑하시기 때문에 그들과 함께 하시겠다고 확실하게 약속하십니다(2,4절).

하나님은 우리를 격랑에 내버려두지 않으십니다. 우리는 하나님이 우리의 깊은 두려움이나 고통스런 환난의 급류 속에서도 인도해주신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 우리도 사랑하셔서 함께 하시겠다고 약속하시기 때문입니다.

Riding the Rapids

The rafting guide escorted our group to the river’s edge and directed us all to put on life jackets and grab paddles. As we climbed into the boat, he assigned us seats to balance the boat’s weight, providing stability when we encountered rapids. After highlighting the thrills the watery voyage ahead would hold for us, he detailed a series of directions we could expect to hear—and would need to follow—to effectively steer the boat through the white water. He assured us that even though there might be tense moments on the way, our journey would be both exciting and safe.

Sometimes life feels like a white-water rafting trip, one that contains more rapids than we might like. God’s promise to Israel, through the prophet Isaiah, can guide our feelings when we fear the worst is happening: “When you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you” (ISAIAH 43:2). The Israelites faced an overwhelming fear of rejection by God as they went into exile as a consequence of their sin. Yet instead, He affirms them and promises to be with them because He loves them (vv. 2, 4).

God won’t abandon us in the rough waters. We can trust Him to guide us through the rapids—our deepest fears and most painful troubles—because He also loves us and promises to be with us.

시간의 선물

나는 서둘러 우체국 안으로 들어갔습니다. 할 일은 수두룩한데 들어서는 순간 문 앞까지 길게 늘어선 줄을 보고는 맥이 빠졌습니다. 나는 시계를 보면서 “서둘러 봤자 기다리게 됐네.”라며 혼자 불평을 했습니다.

아직 문가에 서 있는데 처음 보는 노인 한 사람이 다가왔습니다. 그는 우리 뒤에 있는 기계를 가리키며 “이 복사기가 말을 안 듣네요. 기계가 돈을 먹었는데 어떻게 하는지 모르겠어요.” 나는 그 순간 하나님이 나에게 무엇을 원하시는지 알았습니다. 나는 줄에서 벗어나 십 분 만에 문제를 해결해드렸습니다.

그 분 은 나 에 게 감 사 를 표하고 떠났습니다. 다시 줄을 서려고 돌아보니 줄은 다 사라지고 없었습니다. 나는 서비스 카운터로 곧장 갔습니다.

그날의 경험은 나에게 예수님의 말씀을 상기시켜 줍니다. “주라 그리하면 너희에게 줄 것이니 곧 후히 되어 누르고 흔들어 넘치도록 하여 너희에게 안겨 주리라 너희가 헤아리는 그 헤아림으로 너희도 헤아림을 도로 받을 것이니라”(누가복음 6:38).

내가 서두르는 것을 막으신 하나님 때문에 기다리는 시간이 더 짧아진 것 같았습니다. 하나님께서 나의 눈길을 돌려서 다른 사람의 필요를 보게 하시고 선뜻 나의 시간을 내게 하셨습니다. 이것은 하나님이 나에게 주신 선물이었습니다. 내가 다음에 시계를 볼 때 기억하고 싶은 교훈입니다.

The Gift of Time

I headed into the post office in a big hurry. I had a number of things on my to-do list, but as I entered I was frustrated to find a long line backing up all the way to the door. “Hurry up and wait,” I muttered, glancing at my watch.

My hand was still on the door when an elderly stranger approached me. “I can’t get this copier to work,” he said, pointing to the machine behind us. “It took my money and I don’t know what to do.” Immediately I knew what God wanted me to do. I stepped out of line and was able to fix the problem in ten minutes.

The man thanked me and then left. As I turned to get back in line, it was gone. I walked straight to the service counter.

My experience that day reminds me of Jesus’s words: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (LUKE 6:38).

My wait seemed shorter because God interrupted my hurry. By turning my eyes to others’ needs and helping me give of my time, He gave me a gift. It’s a lesson I hope to remember, next time I look at my watch.

하늘의 도움

모스 부호 신호 SOS는 1905년에 선원들이 극한 상황을 알리는 방법이 필요해서 만들어졌습니다. 그 신호는 1910년 증기기관선 켄터키호가 침몰할 때 46명의 승객 전원을 살리게 되면서 널리 알려지게 되었습니다.

SOS가 비교적 근래에 발명된 것이라면, 도와달라고 급하게 부르짖는 방법은 인류의 역사만큼이나 오 래 되 었 습 니 다 . 우 리 는 이 소리를 구약성경의 여호수아 이야기에서 자주 듣습니다. 하나님께서 약속하신 땅을 이스라엘 백성들이 14년이 넘도록 천천히 정복하고 정착해가는 동안 여호수아는 이스라엘 회중들의 반대(여호수아 9:18)와 험난한 지형(3:15-17)에 마주쳤습니다. 그러나 이 고난의 때에도 “여호와께서 여호수아와 함께 하셨습니다”(6:27).

여호수아 10장을 보면 이스라엘 백성들이 다섯 왕들로부터 공격을 받는 그들의 동맹국 기브온을 도우러 갑니다. 여호수아는 다수의 강한 적들을 물리치려면 하나님의 도움이 필요하다는 것을 알았습니다 (12절). 하나님은 이에 응답하셔서 우박을 내려주시고, 심지어 태양을 중천에 멈추어 있게 하셔서 이스라엘 백성이 적을 물리칠 시간을 더 많이 주셨습니다. 여호수아 10장 14절은 “이는 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 싸우셨음이니라”라고 말합니다.

우리도 힘든 상황에 있을 때 하나님께 SOS를 보낼 수 있습니다. 여호수아가 받은 도움과는 다른 모습이겠지만 그 도움은 기대하지 않았던 직장이나, 이해심이 많은 의사나, 아니면 슬픔 가운데 평안과 같은 모습으로 다가올지도 모릅니다. 하나님은 이런 방법으로 당신이 요청한 도움에 응답하시고 당신을 위해 싸우고 계십니다. 용기를 내십시오.

Help from Heaven

SOS, the Morse code signal, was created in 1905 because sailors needed a way to indicate extreme distress. The signal gained notoriety in 1910 when used by the sinking ship Steamship Kentucky, saving all forty-six people aboard.

While SOS may be a more recent invention, the urgent cry for help is as old as humanity. We hear it often in the Old Testament story of Joshua, who faced opposition from fellow Israelites (JOSHUA 9:18) and challenging terrain (3:15–17) for more than fourteen years as the Israelites slowly conquered and settled the land God had promised them. During this struggle “the LORD was with Joshua” (6:27).

In Joshua 10, the Israelites go to the aid of the Gibeonites, allies of Israel who were being attacked by five kings. Joshua knew that he needed the Lord’s help to defeat so many powerful enemies (V 12). God responded with a hailstorm, even stopping the sun in the middle of the sky to give Israel more time to defeat the enemy. Joshua 10:14 recounts, “Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!”

If you are in the midst of a challenging situation, you can send out an SOS to God. Although help will look different than the assistance Joshua received, perhaps help comes through an unexpected job, an understanding doctor, or peace in the midst of grief. Be encouraged that these are ways He is responding to your call for help and fighting for you.

미소 짓는 그 남자

나는 식료품가게에 가는 것을 특별히 좋아하지는 않습니다. 그것은 단지 필요해서 가는 하나의 일상일 뿐입니다.

그런데 뜻밖에 가게에 갈 때 기다려지는 것이 하나 생겼습니다. 그것은 프레드의 계산대에서 계산을 하는 것입니다. 보면 알겠지만 프레드는 계산하는 시간을 공연 시간으로 만듭니다. 곡예를 하듯이 (깨지지 않는) 물건들을 휙휙 돌리며 비닐봉지에 담는 그의 동작은 매우 빠른데, 언제나 큰 미소를 머금고 심지어 춤도 춥니다(그리고 가끔 노래도 합니다!). 그는 가장 지루한 직업의 하나일 수 있는 그 일을 확실히 즐기고 있습니다. 그리고 잠시 동안이나마 그의 쾌활한 기운은 계산대에 줄서있는 사람들의 삶을 환하게 해줍니다.

나는 프레드가 자기의 일을 대하는 방법에 경의와 찬사를 보냅니다. 그의 쾌활한 태도와 봉사 정신과 작은 일에까지 세심한 것은 바울 사도가 골로새서 3장 23절에서 우리의 일하는 방식에 대해 말할 때 “너희가 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하라”고 한 것과 아주 잘 맞습니다.

우리가 주님과 사귀며 살면 우리가 하는 모든 일은 우리 삶 속에 주님이 함께 하심을 드러내 보여줄 수 있는 기회가 됩니다. 너무 작은 일이나, 너무 큰일이란 없습니다! 우리가 무슨 일을 하든지 기쁨과 창의력과 탁월함을 가지고 책임을 다하면 주변 사람들에게 영향을 줄
수 있는 기회를 얻게 됩니다.

That Smiling Man

Going to the grocery store isn’t something I particularly enjoy. It’s just a mundane part of life—something that has to be done.

But there is one part of this task I’ve unexpectedly come to look forward to: checking out in Fred’s lane. Fred, you see, turns checkout into show time. He’s amazingly fast, always has a big smile, and even dances (and sometimes sings!) as he acrobatically flips (unbreakable) purchases into a plastic bag. Fred clearly enjoys a job that could be seen as one of the most tedious around. And for just a moment, his cheerful spirit brightens the lives of people in his checkout lane.

The way Fred does his job has won my respect and admiration. His cheerful attitude, desire to serve, and attention to detail all line up well with the apostle Paul’s description of how we are to work in Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

When we’re in relationship with Jesus, any job we have to do gives us an opportunity to reflect His presence in our lives. No task is too small . . . or too big! Tackling our responsibilities—whatever they may be—with joy, creativity, and excellence gives us an opportunity to influence those around us, no matter our job.

소망이 있는 애통함

바하마의 수도 나소에 있는 클리프톤 헤리티지 국립공원을 방문하면 역사의 한 슬픈 시대를 다시 보게 됩니다. 그곳은 육지와 바다가 만나는 곳에서 돌계단으로 절벽을 오르게 되어 있습니다. 18세기에 노예들이 배에 실려 바하마로 끌려오면 이 계단으로 올라가 가족들을 뒤로 한 채 비인간적인 삶을 살아야 했습니다. 그 정상에는 노예들의 기림비가 있습니다. 삼나무들에 새겨진 여인의 형상들은 바다를 향해 그 건너에 있는 고국과 잃어버린 가족들을 보고 있습니다. 조각들마다 노예 선장의 채찍을 맞아 생긴 상처가 새겨져 있습니다.

잃은 것들을 슬퍼하고 있는 여인의 조각상들은 나에게 이 세상에 불의와 망가진 체계가 있다는 것을 인정하고 애통해하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 일깨워줍니다. 애통해하는 것은 우리에게 희망이 없다는 뜻이 아니라 오히려 하나님께 정직하게 서는 한 방법입니다. 그것은 우리
그리스도인들에게는 익숙한 자세가 되어야 합니다. 시편 가운데 대략 40퍼센트가 애통의 시편이며, 예레미야애가에서도 하나님의 백성들이 적의 침략으로 그들의 도시가 파괴된 후 하나님을 향해 울부짖고 있습니다(3:55).

고통스런 현실 앞에 애통해하는 것은 당연한 것이며, 고통과 환난의 상황에서 하나님과 연결시켜줍니다. 궁극적으로 애통함 속에는 희망이 있습니다. 옳지 않은 것에 대해 애통해할 때 우리 자신이나 다른 사람들이 적극적으로 변화를 추구하게 됩니다.

그리고 바로 그것이 나소에 있는 조각 정원이 “창세기”라는 이름을 갖게 된 이유입니다. 애통의 장소가 새로운 시작을 뜻하는 장소가 된 것입니다.

A Hopeful Lament

To visit Clifton Heritage National Park in Nassau, Bahamas, is to revisit a tragic era in history. Where the land meets the water, stone steps lead up a cliff. Slaves brought to the Bahamas by ship in the eighteenth century would ascend these steps, often leaving family behind and entering a life of inhumane treatment. At the top, there is a memorial to those slaves. Cedar trees have been carved into the shapes of women looking out to sea toward the homeland and family members they’ve lost. Each sculpture is scarred with marks of the slave captain’s whip.

These sculptures of women mourning what they’ve lost remind me of the importance of recognizing the injustices and broken systems in the world, and lamenting them. Lamenting does not mean that we are without hope; rather, it’s a way of being honest with God. It should be a familiar posture for Christians; about forty percent of the Psalms are psalms of lament, and in the book of Lamentations, God’s people cry out to Him after their city has been destroyed by invaders (3:55).

Lament is a legitimate response to the reality of suffering, and it engages God in the context of pain and trouble. Ultimately, lament is hopeful: when we lament what is not right, we call ourselves and others to be active in seeking change.

And that’s why the sculpture garden in Nassau has been named “Genesis”—the place of lament is recognized as the place of new beginnings.

좋은 아빠

우리 아들 자비어가 어렸을 때 남편은 종종 출장으로 집을 떠나 있었습니다. 물론 아빠는 자주 전화를 했지만 전화만으로 자비어를 달래기에는 힘든 밤들이 있었습니다. 아들이 아빠를 보고 싶어 할 때에는 아이를 달래주기 위해 아들이 잠자리에 들때 사진 앨범을 꺼내 아들과 아빠가 함께 시간을 보낸 사진들을 보여주며 “너 이거 생각나니?”하고 묻곤 했습니다.

기억들을 계속 떠올리며 위로를 얻은 아들은 종종 “내겐 좋은 아빠가 있어.”라고 말했습니다.

나는 자비어가 아빠가 없을 때 아빠의 사랑을 기억할 필요가 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 나도 힘들고 외로운 시기를 지날 때마다 내가 사랑받고 있음을, 특히 내 하나님 아버지께 사랑받고 있다는 것을 정말 알고 싶습니다.

다윗도 원수들을 피해 사막에 숨었을 때 하나님을 향한 깊은 갈망을 분명히 보여주었습니다(시편 63:1). 그는 직접 체험한 하나님의 무한하신 권능과 충만한 사랑을 기억하며 하나님을 찬양했습니다(2-5절). 가장 힘든 밤들을 보내면서도 다윗은 하나님 아버지의 사랑의 보살핌을 의지하며 여전히 즐거워할 수 있었습니다 (6-8절).

어려운 시간을 지나며 마치 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시지 않는다고 느껴질 때 우리는 하나님이 누구시며 하나님의 사랑을 어떻게 보여주셨는지 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 성경에 기록된 하나님의 사랑의 행동들과 하나님을 인격적으로 경험한 것들을 되새기면서 우리는 좋으신 하나님 아버지께서 셀 수 없는 방법으로 우리를 사랑하신다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

A Good Daddy

When our son, Xavier, was younger, business trips often pulled my husband away from home. Though his father called often, there were rough nights when the calls alone didn’t comfort Xavier. To help soothe our son when he felt he needed his dad, I’d pull out our photo albums as he prepared for bedtime. I’d point out the images that showed them spending time together and ask, “Do you remember this?”

Memory after memory encouraged our son, who often said, “I have a good daddy.”

I understood Xavier’s need to be reminded of his father’s love when he couldn’t see him. Whenever I’m going through tough or lonely times, I too long to know I’m loved, especially by my heavenly Father.

David proclaimed his deep yearning for God as he hid from his enemies in the desert (PSALM 63:1). Remembering his personal encounters with God’s limitless power and satisfying love led him to praise (VV 2–5). Through his most difficult nights, David could still rejoice in his dependable Father’s loving care (VV 6–8).

During our dark times, when we feel as if God’s not there for us, we need reminders of who God is and how He’s demonstrated His love. Reflecting on our personal experiences with Him, as well as His actions recorded in Scripture, can affirm the countless ways our good Abba Father loves us.
