사랑에의 헌신

예수 그리스도께로 개종한 나비일 쿠레쉬는 그가 믿었던 종교를 믿는 사람들에 대해 독자들이 잘 이해할 수 있도록 책을 여러 권 썼습니다. 쿠레쉬의 논조에는 존경심이 들어있고 언제나 자기 백성을 사랑하는 마음이 나타나 있습니다.

쿠레쉬는 자기 책 가운데 한 권을 아직 예수님을 믿지 않는 그의 여동생에게 헌정했습니다. 그의 헌정의 글은 간단하고 강력했습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “나는 우리가 함께 하나님을 예배할 수 있는 그날을 위해 하나님께 간절히 기도하고 있다.”

우리는 바울이 로마 교회에 보낸 편지에서도 이 같은 사랑을 느낄 수 있습니다. “나에게는 큰 슬픔이 있고, 내 마음에는 끊임없는 고통이 있습니다. 나는 육신으로 내 동족인 내 겨레를 위하는 일이면, 내가 저주를 받아서 그리스도에게서 끊어질지라도 달게 받겠습니다”(로마서 9:2-3, 새번역).

유대 백성들을 너무나 사랑했던 바울은 그들이 그리스도를 받아들이기만 한다면 자신은 하나님으로부터 끊어지더라도 그렇게 하겠다고 말했습니다. 바울은 그의 백성들이 예수님을 거부하는 것은 유일한 참 하나님을 거부하는 것이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 바울은 예수님의 복음을 모든 사람들과 나누라고 그의 편지를 읽는 사람들에게 호소한 것입니다(10:14-15).

오늘 우리는 가까이 있는 사람들을 향해 가슴 아파하는 그런 사랑을 갖도록 기도하는 마음으로 우리 자신을 바칠 수 있기를 바랍니다!

Dedicated to Love

As a convert to Jesus Christ, Nabeel Qureshi has written books to help his readers understand the people in the religion he left. His tone is respectful, and Qureshi always displays a heart of love for his people.

Qureshi dedicated one of his books to his sister, who has not yet put her faith in Jesus. The dedication is brief, but powerful. “I am begging God for the day that we can worship him together,” he wrote.

We get a sense of that kind of love as we read Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. “My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief,” he said, “for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them” (ROMANS 9:2–3 NLT ).

Paul loved the Jewish people so much that he would have chosen separation from God if only they would accept Christ. He understood that by rejecting Jesus, his people were rejecting the one true God. This motivated him to appeal to his readers to share the good news of Jesus with everyone (10:14–15).

Today, may we prayerfully dedicate ourselves to the love that aches for those close to us!

땅이 꺼지는 어려움이 닥칠 때

1997년 아시아 금융위기 때 일자리보다 구직자의 수가 훨씬 더 많았습니다. 나도 그때 구직자 중의 하나였습니다. 나는 불안 속에 아홉 달을 보낸 후 마침내 광고 문안을 작성하는 일자리를 구했습니다. 그러나 그 회사도 불경기로 곧 문을 닫게 되어 나는 다시 실업자가 되었습니다.

이 같은 경험이 있으신지요? 최악의 상황은 지난 것 같았는데 갑자기 땅이 꺼지는 듯한 어려움이 닥치는 일 말입니다. 사르밧의 과부도 이와 비슷한 경우라고 할 수 있습니다(열왕기상 17:12). 그녀가 기근으로 자신과 아들을 위해 마지막 음식을 만들고 있을 때 엘리야 선지자가 먹을 것을 조금 달라고 요청하였습니다. 그녀는 마지못해 내어주었지만 하나님은 그녀에게 밀가루와 기름이 끊이지 않게 공급해주셨습니다 (10-16절).

그런데 그때 그녀의 아들이 병들어 증세가 심해지더니 숨이 끊어지고 말았습니다. 과부는 울부짖었습니다. “하나님의 사람이여 당신이 나와 더불어 무슨 상관이 있기로 내 죄를 생각나게 하고 또 내 아들을 죽게 하려고 내게 오셨나이까”(18절).

때때로 우리는 하나님이 우리를 벌하시는 것은 아닐까 의심하며 이 과부처럼 반응하고 싶을 때가 있습니다. 우리는 이 타락한 세상에서는 나쁜 일들이 일어날 수 있다는 것을 잊어버립니다.

엘리야는 그 문제를 하나님께로 가지고 가서 그 아이를 위해 뜨겁게, 그리고 솔직하게 기도했습니다. 그리고 하나님은 그 아이를 다시 살려주셨습니다(20-22절).

우리에게도 땅이 꺼지는 어려움이 닥칠 때 엘리야처럼 신실하신 주님이 우리를 버리지 않으신다는 것을 알게 되기를 바랍니다! 우리가 이해해 보려고 기도할 때 우리는 하나님의 뜻 안에서 안식을 얻을 수 있습니다.

When the Bottom Drops Out

During the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, more people were looking for work than there were jobs available. I was one of those job seekers. After nine anxious months, I landed employment as a copywriter. But the company soon fell on bad times and I was jobless again.

Ever been there? It seems like the worst is over when suddenly the bottom drops out on you. The widow at Zarephath could relate (1 KINGS 17:12). Due to a famine, she was preparing the last meal for herself and her son when the prophet Elijah requested a bite to eat. She reluctantly agreed and God provided a continuous supply of flour and oil (VV 10–16).

But then her son fell ill. His health declined until he stopped breathing. The widow cried out, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?” (V 18).

At times, we may want to respond like the widow—wondering if God is punishing us. We forget that bad things can happen in this fallen world.

Elijah took the concern to God, praying earnestly and honestly for the boy, and God raised him up! (VV 20–22).

When the bottom drops out on us, may we—like Elijah realize that the faithful One will not desert us! We can rest in God’s purposes as we pray for understanding.

주는 기쁨

우울한 한 주였습니다. 이유 없이 무기력하고 지쳐있었습니다.

주말이 다 되어 숙모가 신장에 문제가 생긴 것을 알게 되었습니다. 숙모를 찾아뵈어야 한다는 것을 알면서도 솔직히 나중으로 미루고만 싶었습니다. 하지만 나는 숙모를 찾아가 함께 식사하며 이야기하고 기도를 했습니다. 한 시간 후 나는 지난 며칠 가운데 처음으로 즐거운 마음이 되어 숙모의 집을 나섰습니다. 나보다는 다른 사람에게 집중하다 보니 내 기분이 어느새 좋아진 것입니다.

심리학자들은 베푸는 행위가 만족감을 가져다주는데 이것은 베푸는 사람이 받는 사람에게서 감사하는 모습을 볼 때 생긴다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 어떤 전문가는 인간은 친절을 베풀도록 설계되어 있다고 믿기도 합니다.

아마도 그래서 바울이 믿음의 공동체를 세워나가는 데살로니가 교회를 격려하면서 “힘이 없는 자들을 붙들어 주라”(데살로니가전서 5:14)고 강권했던 것 같습니다. 그전에는 또 “주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다”(사도행전 20:35)라고 하신 예수님의 말씀을 인용하기도 했습니다. 이것은 재정적으로 베푸는 경우에 한 말씀이지만 시간과 노력을 들여 도울 때에도 적용되는 것입니다.

우리가 베풀 때에, 하나님이 어떻게 느끼시는지를 어느 정도 이해할 수 있습니다. 우리는 왜 하나님이 그렇게 기쁨으로 그분의 사랑을 우리에게 베푸시는지를 이해하게 되고, 다른 사람들을 축복할 때 그분의 기쁨과 만족감을 함께 나누게 됩니다. 그래서 나는 숙모를 곧 다시 방문하려고 합니다.

The Joy of Giving

It was a dreary week. I had been feeling lethargic and listless, although I couldn’t figure out why.

Near the end of the week, I found out that an aunt had kidney failure. I knew I had to visit her—but to be honest, I felt like postponing the visit. Still, I made my way to her place, where we had dinner, chatted, and prayed together. An hour later, I left her home feeling upbeat for the first time in days. Focusing on someone else rather than myself had somehow improved my mood.

Psychologists have found that the act of giving can produce satisfaction, which comes when the giver sees the recipient’s gratitude. Some experts even believe that humans are wired to be generous!

Perhaps that’s why Paul, when encouraging the church in Thessalonica to build up their faith community, urged them to “help the weak” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:14). Earlier, he had also cited Jesus’s words, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (ACTS 20:35). While this was said in the context of giving financially, it applies as well to the giving of time and effort.

When we give, we get an insight into how God feels. We understand why He’s so delighted to give us His love, and we share in His joy and the satisfaction of blessing others. I think I’ll be visiting my aunt again soon.

다 이해할 수 없는 신비

친구와 함께 산책을 하면서 성경을 사랑하는 마음을 서로 이야기했습니다. 그런데 친구가 “아, 그런데 나는 구약은 별로 좋아하지 않아. 전체가 엄격한 이야기에다 복수도 많고. 나는 예수님이 좋아!”라고 하는 말을 듣고 놀랐습니다.

우리는 구약의 나훔 같은 책을 읽을 때 “여호와는 보복하시며 진노하시되”(나훔 1:2) 와 같은 구절을 대하면 주춤하며 내 친구의 말에 공감할지도 모릅니다. 그러나 “여호와는 노하기를 더디하시며 권능이 크시며” (3절)라고 말하는 그 다음 구절은 우리에게 희망을 줍니다.

하나님의 진노에 대해 깊이 생각해보면 하나님이 진노를 내리시는 것은 대부분 그의 백성들과 그의 이름을 지키려 하실 때임을 알게 됩니다. 그분의 넘치는 사랑 때문에 잘못된 것을 바로 잡으시고 그로부터 멀어진 사람들을 구원하려 하십니다. 우리는 이 사랑을 하나님이 그의 백성들을 다시 돌아오라고 부르시는 구약에서 뿐만 아니라, 자신의 아들을 우리 죄의 희생 제물로 보내시는 신약에서도 볼 수 있습니다.

우리는 하나님 성품의 신비함을 다 이해하지는 못해도 그분이 공의를 행하시고 모든 사랑의 근원이 되심을 믿을 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님을 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 하나님은 “선하시고 환난 때에 피난처가 되시며 자기를 신뢰하는 자들을 보호하시기”(7절, 현대인의 성경) 때문입니다.

Hard Mysteries

As my friend and I went for a walk, we talked about our love for the Bible. She surprised me when she said, “Oh, but I don’t like the Old Testament much. All of that hard stuff and vengeance—give me Jesus!”

We might resonate with her words when we read a book like Nahum, perhaps recoiling at a statement such as, “The LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath” (NAHUM 1:2). And yet the next verse fills us with hope: “The LORD is slow to anger but great in power” (V 3).

When we dig more deeply into the subject of God’s anger, we understand that when He exercises it, He’s most often defending His people or His name. Because of His overflowing love, He seeks justice for wrongs committed and the redemption of those who have turned from Him. We see this not only in the Old Testament, as He calls His people back to Himself, but also in the New, when He sends His Son to be the sacrifice for our sins.

We may not understand the mysteries of the character of God, but we can trust that He not only exercises justice but is also the source of all love. We need not fear Him, for He is “good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him” (V 7).

파격적 사랑

결혼식을 불과 한 주일 앞두고 사라의 약혼이 깨어졌습니다. 그녀는 몹시 슬프고 실망스러웠지만 결혼식 피로연으로 이미 주문했던 음식을 버리지 않고, 다만 피로연의 계획을 바꾸기로 했습니다. 그녀는 선물 탁자도 치우고 초청 대상을 완전히 바꾸어 그 지역의 노숙자 쉼터에서 지내는 사람들을 만찬에 초대했습니다.

예수님은 바리새인들에게 “잔치를 베풀거든 차라리 가난한 자들과 몸 불편한 자들과 저는 자들과 맹인들을 청하라 네게 복이 되리라”(누가복음 14:13-14)라고 말씀하시며 이처럼 조건 없이 베푸는 것을 귀하다고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 초대받은 사람들은 주인에게 갚을 것이 없기 때문에 대신 하나님으로부터 복을 받게 될 것이라고 말씀하신 것입니다. 예수님은 헌금할 돈도 없고, 세련된 대화도 할 줄 모르며, 아무런 인맥도 없는 사람들을 돕는 것을 좋게 생각하셨습니다.

예수님이 이 말씀을 바리새인이 준비한 음식을 드시며 하셨다는 것을 생각하면 상당히 도발적이고 격식을 깨는 것으로 들릴지 모릅니다. 그러나 진실한 사랑은 파격적입니다. 사랑이란 아무런 대가를 기대하지 않고 남의 필요를 채워주는 것이라는 말이 있습니다. 이것이 예수님이
우리 한 사람 한 사람을 사랑하시는 방법입니다. 그분은 우리 내면의 가난함을 보시고 우리를 위해 자신의 목숨을 내어주셨습니다.

그리스도를 인격적으로 안다는 것은 그의 무한한 사랑을 알아가는 하나의 여정입니다. 우리 모두는 “그리스도의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠함을”(에베소서 3:18,19) 깨달아 알아가도록 초대 받았습니다.

Radical Love

Just one week before her scheduled wedding date, Sarah’s engagement ended. Despite her sadness and disappointment, she decided not to waste the food she had purchased for her wedding reception. She did, however, decide to change the celebration plans. She took down the gift table and revamped the guest list, inviting the residents of local homeless shelters to the feast.

Jesus upheld this sort of no-strings-attached kindness when speaking to the Pharisees, saying, “When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed” (LUKE 14:13–14). He noted that the blessing would come from God because these guests would not be able to repay the host. Jesus approved of helping people who couldn’t supply charity donations, sparkling conversation, or social connections.

When we consider that Jesus spoke these words as He sat at a meal given by a Pharisee, His message seems provocative and radical. But real love is radical. I’ve heard it said that love is giving to meet the needs of others without expecting anything in return. This is how Jesus has loved each of us. He saw our inner poverty and responded by giving His life for us.

Knowing Christ personally is a journey into His infinite love. All of us are invited to explore “how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (EPHESIANS 3:18).

사랑하는 친구에게

1세기에 요한 사도가 친구 가이오에게 사용했던 방법은 21세기에 와서는 거의 쓰이지 않게 되었습니다. 요한은 친구에게 편지를 썼던 것입니다.

예를 들어 ‘뉴욕타임즈’에 기고하는 캐서린 필드는 “편지는 가장 오래된 방법 중 하나이다. 편지를 생각하면 다소의 바울이 떠오른다.”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 여기에 요한 사도도
추가할 수 있습니다.

요한은 가이오에게 쓴 편지에서 영육 간의 건강을 기원하고 그의 신실함을 격려하며 교회를 사랑하는 그의 모습을 이야기했습니다. 또한 교회의 문제에 대해서도 언급하며 이것은 나중에 따로 다루자고 했습니다. 그리고 하나님의 영광을 위해 선한 일을 하는 것이 매우 중요하다고 썼습니다. 전체적으로 그것은 친구를 격려하고 도전을 주는 편지였습니다.

디지털 통신시대가 되어 종이 편지는 사라져가고 있지만 다른 사람을 격려하는 것은 계속되어야 합니다. 바울은 양피지에 격려 편지를 썼지만 우리는 여러 다른 방법으로 사람들을 격려할 수 있습니다. 중요한 것은 우리가 사람들을 격려하는 방법이 아니라 우리가 그들을 예수님의

가이오가 요한의 편지를 읽으며 받았을 격려를 생각해보십시오. 우리도 이와 같이 사려 깊은 글이나 격려가 되는 전화 한 통으로 친구들에게 하나님의 사랑을 비춰줄 수 있지 않을까요?

To My Dear Friend

What the apostle John did for his friend Gaius in the first century is a dying art in the twenty-first century. John wrote him a letter.

One writer for the New York Times, Catherine Field, said, “Letter-writing is among our most ancient of arts. Think of letters and the mind falls on Paul of Tarsus,” for example. And we can add the apostle John.

In his letter to Gaius, John included hopes for good health of body and soul, an encouraging word about Gaius’s faithfulness, and a note about his love for the church. John also spoke of a problem in the church, which he promised to address individually later. And he wrote of the value of doing good things for God’s glory. All in all, it was an encouraging and challenging letter to his friend.

Digital communication may mean letter-writing on paper is fading away, but this shouldn’t stop us from encouraging others. Paul wrote letters of encouragement on parchment; we can encourage others in a variety of ways. The key is not the way we encourage others, but that we take a moment to let others know we care for them in Jesus’s name!

Think of the encouragement Gaius experienced when he opened John’s letter. Could we similarly shine God’s love on our friends with a thoughtful note or an uplifting call?

홍수로 인한 치유

나는 폭풍우가 몰아치면 언제나 좋았습니다. 어릴 때 폭풍우가 천둥을 동반해서 장대 같은 비를 몰고 올 때면 나는 형제들과 같이 집 밖으로 나가 이리저리 마구 뛰어다니다 자빠지고 미끄러지기도 하며 놀았습니다. 집에 돌아갈 때쯤이면 우리는 완전히 물에 젖어 있었습니다.

그것은 참으로 짜릿한 경험이었습니다. 몇 분이 안 되는 짧은 시간에 우리는 재미와 두려움이 뒤섞인 무엇인가 매우 강력한 것 안에 들어가 본 것입니다.

시편 107편처럼 성경에서 하나님이 하시는 회복을 메마른 광야가 “못”으로 변하는(35절) 것에 비유하는 것을 보면 나의 그 어릴 적 생각이 떠오릅니다. 왜냐하면 사막을 오아시스로 바꾸는 폭풍우는 그저
부드러운 비가 아니라 메말라 갈라진 땅을 모두 새로운 생명으로 넘치게 하는 폭우이기 때문입니다.

우리가 간절히 바라는 회복도 그런 것이 아닐까요? 끝내 올 것 같지 않은 치유를 기다리며 “주리고 목마르고” 허기져서 삶이 그저 목적 없이 맴돈다고 느껴질 때에는(4-5절) 우리에게 한 조각 작은 희망으로는
부족할 것입니다. 그리고 뿌리 깊은 죄의 습관으로 “흑암”에 매여 있다면 (10-11절) 우리의 마음에는 조그마한 변화 이상의 것이 필요합니다.

하나님은 바로 이러한 변화를 가져다주십니다(20절). 얼마든지 우리의 사슬을 끊으시고 우리의 어두움을 그분의 빛으로 채우실 수 있는 하나님께 우리는 언제든지 두려움과 부끄러움을 들고 나갈 수 있습니다(13-14절).

Healing Flood

I’ve always loved a good thunderstorm. As kids, whenever a storm was truly incredible—with booming thunder and buckets of heavy rain pounding down—my siblings and I would make a mad dash around the outside of our house, slipping and sliding along the way. When it was time to go back inside, we were soaked to the bone.

It was an exhilarating taste—for just for a few minutes—of being immersed in something so powerful we couldn’t quite tell whether we were having fun or terrified.

This picture comes to mind when, as in Psalm 107, Scripture compares God’s restoration to a barren wilderness transformed into “pools of water” (V 35).
Because the kind of storm that transforms a desert into anoasis isn’t a gentle shower—it’s a downpour, flooding every crack of parched ground with new life.

And isn’t that the kind of restoration we long for? When our stories feel like tales of aimless wandering because we are “hungry and thirsty”— starving —for healing that never seems to arrive (VV 4–5), we need more than a bit of hope. And when deep-rooted patterns of sin leave us trapped “in utter darkness” (VV 10–11), our hearts need more than a little change.

That’s exactly the kind of transformation our God can bring (V 20). It’s never too late to bring our fears and shame to the One who’s more than able to break our chains and flood our darkness with His light (VV 13–14). MONICA BRANDS

무한한 사랑

한 지혜로운 친구로부터 언쟁 중에는, 특히 가족 간에는 “너는 항상”, “너는 절대”와 같은 말을 쓰지 말라는 충고를 받았습니다. 우리는 너무나 쉽게 주위 사람들을 비난하고 사랑하는 사람에게 미운 감정을 가지기도 합니다. 그러나 우리 모두를 향한 하나님의 오래 참는 사랑에는 결코 변함이 없습니다.

시편 145편에는 ‘모든’이라는 말이 여러 번 나옵니다. “여호와께서는 모든 것을 선대하시며 그 지으신 모든 것에 긍휼을 베푸시는도다”(9절). “여호와의 모든 약속은 신뢰할 만하며 그 하시는 모든일은 신실하시도다 여호와께서는 모든 넘어지는 자들을 붙드시며 비굴한 자들을 일으키시는도다”(13-14절, 많은 사본에 13절의 이 부분이 없음-역주). “여호와께서 자기를 사랑하는 자들은 다 보호하시고”(20절).
이 시편은 하나님의 사랑은 무한하고 편애함이 없다고 우리에게 열 번이 넘도록 말해줍니다. 그리고 신약성경에서 하나님 사랑의 가장 위대한 표현은 예수 그리스도 안에 나타납니다. “하나님이 세상을
이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라”(요한복음 3:16).

시편 145편은 이렇게 말합니다. “여호와께서는 자기에게 간구하는 모든 자 곧 진실하게 간구하는 모든 자에게 가까이 하시는도다 그는 자기를 경외하는 자들의 소원을 이루시며 또 그들의 부르짖음을 들으사
구원하시리로다”(18-19절).

우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑은 오래 참으시며 그침이 없습니다!

Love Without Limits

A wise friend advised me to avoid using the words “you always” or “you never” in an argument—especially with my family. How easy it is to criticize others around us and to feel unloving toward those we love. But there is never any variation in God’s enduring love for us all.

Psalm 145 overflows with the word all . “The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made” (V 9). “The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down” (VV 13–14). “The L ORD watches over all who love him” (V 20).

A dozen times in this psalm we are reminded that God’s love is without limit and favoritism. And the New Testament reveals that the greatest expression of it is seen in Jesus Christ: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (JOHN 3:16).

Psalm 145 declares that “the LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them” (VV 18–19).

God’s love for us always endures, and it never fails!

우리 같은 죄인

이디스라는 내 친구는 자기가 예수님을 따르기로 결심한 날에 대해 나에게 이야기했습니다.

이디스는 종교에 관심이 없었습니다. 그러나 어느 주일 아침 그녀는 만족함이 없는 자신의 마음을 달래줄 무언가를 찾으려고 아파트 근처의 교회에 가게 되었습니다. 그날 설교 본문은 누가복음 15:1-2 이었는데, 목사님이 흠정역 성경으로 본문을 읽었습니다. “모든 세리와 죄인들이 말씀을 들으러 가까이 나아오니 바리새인과 서기관들이 수군거려 이르되 이 사람이 죄인을 영접하고 음식을 같이 먹는다 하더라.”

그러나 이 말씀은 이디스에게 “이 사람이 죄인과 이디스를 함께 영접하고” 라는 말로 들렸습니다. (역주: ‘먹는다’의 발음이 이디스의 이름과 같음) 그녀는 의자에 자세를 바로 고쳐 앉았습니다! 나중에 그녀는 자신이 잘못 들었다는 것을 알게 되었지만, 예수님이 ‘이디스를 포함한’ 죄인들을 받아들이셨다는 생각이 마음을 떠나지 않았습니다. 그날 오후 그녀는 예수님께 “가까이 나아가” 그의 말씀에 귀 기울이기로 마음을 정했습니다. 성경을 읽기 시작한 그녀는 곧 예수님을 믿고 따르기로 결정했습니다.

예수님 시대의 종교인들은 주님께서 죄 많고 천한 부류의 사람들과 함께 먹고 마시는 것에 분개했습니다. 그들에게는 그런 사람들과 어울리는 것을 금하는 규정이 있었기 때문입니다. 그러나 예수님은 인간이 만든 그들의 규정에 개의치 않으셨습니다. 주님은 얼마나 형편없든지 상관하지 않고 사회에서 버려진 사람들을 영접하고 불러 모으셨습니다.

예수님이 죄인들과 당신을 받아주신다는 것은 아직도 사실입니다.

Sinners Like Us

I have a friend—her name is Edith—who told me about the day she decided to follow Jesus.

Edith cared nothing for religion. But one Sunday morning she walked into a church near her apartment looking for something to satisfy her discontented soul. The text that day was Luke 15:1–2, which the pastor read from the King James Version: “Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.”

That’s what it said, but this is what Edith heard: “This man receives sinners and Edith with them.” She sat straight up in her pew! Eventually she realized her mistake, but the thought that Jesus welcomed sinners—and that included Edith—stayed with her. That afternoon she decided to “draw near” to Jesus and listen to Him. She began to read the Gospels, and soon she decided to put her faith in Him and follow Him.

The religious folks of Jesus’s day were scandalized by the fact that He ate and drank with sinful, awful people. Their rules prohibited them from associating with such folk. Jesus paid no attention to their made-up rules. He welcomed the down-and-out and gathered them to Him, no matter how far gone they were.

어려움을 극복하기

내 친구 메리와 나는 각자 세운 목표들을 잘 이루고 있는지 서로 확인해주기 위해 매달 만났습니다. 메리는 연말까지 식탁 의자들의 천을 바꾸려 했습니다. 그녀는 11월에 만났을 때 10월에 있었던 성과를 이렇게 재미있게 이야기했습니다. “의자 커버들을 가는데 열 달하고 두 시간이 걸렸어.” 그 일을 실제로 붙들고 마치는 데는 단 두 시간밖에 걸리지 않았지만, 지금까지 여러 달이 지나도록 필요한 재료들을 구하지 못하고 또 직장 일과 어린 자녀를 돌보는 일을 벗어나 시간을 낼 수가 없었던 것입니다.

주님은 느헤미야에게 그보다 훨씬 더 큰일을 맡기셨습니다. 그것은 성벽이 무너져 150년 동안 폐허로 남아있던 예루살렘을 복원하는 것이었습니다(느헤미야 2:3-5,12). 느헤미야가 사람들을 이끌고 그 일을 수행할 때 그들은 조롱과 공격, 방해를 받고, 죄에 대한 유혹도 있었습니다(4:3,8; 6:10-12). 그러나 하나님은 그들이 확고하게 서서 흔들리지 않고 노력하게 하심으로 그 벅찬 일을 단 52일 만에 끝낼 수 있게 하셨습니다.

우리의 개인적인 열망이나 목표만으로는 그 같은 어려움들을 극복할 수 없습니다. 느헤미야는 하나님이 그 일을 맡기셨다는 것을 알았기 때문에 그 어려움을 극복할 수 있었습니다. 그의 명확한 목적의식은 엄청난 반대가 있었음에도 많은 사람들이 그의 지도력을 따를 수 있도록 활기를 불어넣어주었습니다. 하나님이 우리에게 일을 맡기실 때는 그것이 관계를 회복하는 일이든 우리 삶에 그분이 행하신 일을 간증하는 일이든, 우리 앞에 어떤 일이 있더라도 하나님이 우리에게
맡기신 일을 계속하는데 필요한 모든 방법과 힘을 주십니다.

Overcoming Challenges

We gathered monthly to hold one another accountable to our individual goals. My friend Mary wanted to reupholster the seats of her dining room chairs before the year’s end. At our November meeting she wittily reported her progress from October: “It took ten months and two hours to recover my chairs.” After months of not being able to obtain the materials required, or find the quiet hours away from her demanding job and her toddler’s needs, the project took merely two hours of committed work to finish.

The Lord called Nehemiah to a far greater project: to bring restoration to Jerusalem after its walls had lain in ruin for 150 years (Nehemiah 2:3–5, 12). As he led the people in the labor, they experienced mockery, attacks, distraction, and temptation to sin (4:3, 8; 6:10–12). Yet God equipped them to stand firm—resolute in their efforts—completing a daunting task in just fifty-two days.

Overcoming such challenges requires much more than a personal desire or goal; Nehemiah was driven by an understanding that God appointed him to the task. His sense of purpose invigorated the people to follow his leadership despite incredible opposition. When God charges us with a task—whether to repair a relationship or share what He’s done in our lives—He gives us whatever skills and strength are necessary to continue in our effort to do what He’s asked, no matter what challenges come our way. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
