함께 나누는 위로

“하나님께서 오늘밤 당신을 나에게 보내주셨네요!” 이것은 시카고에 가는 비행기에서 내릴 때 앞에 서 있던 여인이 내게 남긴 말이었습니다. 그녀는 내 좌석의 통로 건너편에 앉아 있었는데, 그날 왕복으로 몇 번의 비행을 거쳐 그녀의 집으로 돌아가는 길이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 나는 “실례가 안된다면 왜 그렇게 서둘러 다니시는지 여쭈어 봐도 될까요?” 하고 물어보았습니다.
그녀는 고개를 숙이며 “바로 오늘 우리 딸을 약물중독 재활병원에 입원시키고 오는 길입니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

그 얘기를 듣자마자 나는 우리 아들이 헤로인 중독으로 고생했던 일과 예수님께서 그 아이를 어떻게 중독에서 자유롭게 하셨는지를 조심스럽게 나누었습니다. 그녀는 이야기를 들으며 눈물을 흘리면서 미소를 지었습니다. 비행기가 착륙하고 헤어지기 전 우리는 하나님께서 그 딸의 사슬을 끊어 주시도록 함께 기도했습니다.

나는 그날 밤 바울이 기록한 고린도후서 1:3-4 말씀을 생각했습니다. “찬송하리로다 그는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님이시요 자비의 아버지시요 모든 위로의 하나님이시며 우리의 모든 환난 중에서 우리를 위로하사 우리로 하여금 하나님께 받는 위로로써 모든 환난 중에 있는 자들을 능히 위로하게 하시는 이시로다.”

우리 주변에는 하나님만이 주실 수 있는 위로로 힘을 얻어야 할 사람들이 많이 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 마음에서 우러난 따뜻한 연민으로 그들에게 다가가 하나님이 우리에게 나누어주신 사랑을 그들과 함께 나누기를 원하십니다. 하나님, 오늘 우리를 주님의 위로가 필요한 이들에게 보내주소서!

Comfort Shared

“God sent you to me tonight!” Those were the parting words from the woman standing in front of me as we exited our flight to Chicago. She had sat across the aisle from me, where I learned she was headed home after several flights in a round-trip that day. “Do you mind if I ask why you had such a quick turnaround?” I inquired. She glanced downward: “I just put my daughter in rehab for drug abuse today.”

In the moments that followed I gently shared the story of my son’s struggle with heroin addiction and how Jesus had set him free. As she listened, a smile broke through her tears. After the plane landed we prayed together before parting, asking God to break her daughter’s chains.

Later that evening I thought of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 1:3–4: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who com-
forts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

All around us are people who need to be encouraged with the comfort only God can give. He wants us to reach out to them with tenderhearted compassion, to share the love He has
shared with us. May God send us to those who need His comfort today! JAMES BANKS

듣고 싶은 것

본능적으로 우리는 우리가 지지하는 의견을 뒷받침해주는 정보를 찾는 경향이 있습니다. 연구에 의하면 우리는 실제로 자신의 입장을 지지하는 정보를 ‘두 배’나 더 찾는다고 합니다. 이처럼
자신의 사고방식에 깊이 갇혀 있으면 반대 입장의 생각은 회피하게 됩니다.

이스라엘을 통치했던 아합왕의 경우가 그랬습니다. 그와 유다 왕 여호사밧이 길르앗 라못을 공격할지 여부를 논의했을 때 아합왕은 자기가 듣고 싶은 말만 하는 선지자 400명을 직접 뽑아서 그들이 결정하도록 했습니다. 그들은 “하나님이 그 성읍을 왕의 손에 붙이시리이다”(역대하 18:5)라고 말하며 싸우러 가야 한다고 대답했습니다. 여호사밧은 이들 외에 하나님의 뜻을 구할
하나님께서 택하신 다른 선지자가 있는지 물었습니다. 아합은 마지못해 하나님의 선지자 미가는 “[그]에 대하여 좋은 일로는 예언하지 아니하고 항상 나쁜 일로만 예언”(7절)한다고 대답했습니다. 역시나 미가는 그들이 승리하지 못할 것이며, 백성들이 “이산 저산에 흩어질” 것이라고 예언했습니다(16절).

이 이야기를 읽으며, 나 역시 내가 듣고 싶은 것이 아니면 현명한 충고라도 피하려고 하는 경향이 있음을 보게 됩니다. 자신의 말에 무조건 “네”라고 대답하는 선지자 400 명의 의견을 들은 아합의 최후는 실로 비참했습니다(34절). 우리는 자신이 원하는 것에 반대되더라도 진리의 음성인 성경에 기록된 하나님의 말씀을 기꺼이 구하고 경청할 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

What We Want to Hear

As human beings, we are prone to seek out information that supports the opinions we hold. Research shows that we’re actually twice as likely to look for information that sup- ports our position. When we’re deeply committed to our own way of thinking, we avoid having that thinking challenged by opposing positions.

Such was the case in King Ahab’s rule over Israel. When he and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, discussed whether to go to war against Ramoth Gilead, Ahab gathered 400 prophets—men he’d appointed to that role himself and would therefore tell him what he wanted to hear—to help them decide. Each replied he should go, saying “God will give it into the king’s hand” (2 CHRONICLES 18:5). Jehoshaphat asked whether there was a prophet who had been chosen by God through whom they could inquire of the Lord. Ahab responded reluctantly because God’s prophet, Micaiah, “never prophesies anything good about [him], but always bad” (V 7). Indeed, Micaiah indicated they wouldn’t be victorious, and the people would be “scattered on the hills” (V 16).

In reading their story, I see how I too tend to avoid wise advice if it isn’t what I want to hear. In Ahab’s case, the result of listening to his “yes men”—400 prophets—was disastrous (V 34). May we be willing to seek and listen to the voice of truth, God’s words in the Bible, even when it contradicts our personal preferences. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

현관 앞 구호품

유난히 더웠던 어느 날 여덟 살짜리 소년 카마인 맥다니엘은 동네 우편배달부가 시원하게 그리고 충분히 물을 마시면서 다니게 해주고 싶었습니다. 그래서 그는 스포츠음료와 물병이 든 아이스박스를 집 앞 계단에 놓아두었습니다. 집에 설치된 보안용 카메라에 우편배달부의 반응이 녹화되었습니다. “이럴수가! 물과 게토레이라니...... 하나님, 감사합니다! 감사합니다!”

카마인의 어머니가 말합니다. “카마인은 집에 사람이 없을 때라도 우편배달부에게 시원한 음료수를 제공하는 것이 자신의 ‘의무’라고 생각해요.”

이 이야기는 우리의 마음을 감동시킬 뿐 아니라, 바울 사도가 표현한 대로 “우리의 모든 필요를 채우시는” 분이 있음을 떠올려줍니다. 바울은 감옥에서 쇠약해지고 미래도 불확실했지만, 하나님께서 빌립보 교인들의 재정지원을 통해 그의 필요를 채워주시자 그들로 인해
기뻐했습니다. 빌립보 교회는 부요하지는 않았지만 가난한 중에도 바울 및 다른 이들에게 관대히 베풀었습니다(고린도후서 8:1-4 참조). 빌립보 교인들이 바울의 필요를 채워주었기에, 하나님도 “그리스도 예수 안에서 영광 가운데 그 풍성한 대로”(빌립보서 4:19) 그들의 필요를 채워주셨을 것입니다.

하나님께서는 종종 수평적인 방법을 통해서 수직적인 도움을 주십니다. 달리 표현하자면, 하나님은 다른 사람들의 손길을 통해 우리의 필요를 공급하십니다. 우리의 필요 때문에 주님을 신뢰할 때, 바울이 그랬던 것처럼 우리도 진정한 만족의 비밀을 알게 됩니다(12-13절)

Front-Porch Relief

On a particularly hot day, eight-year-old Carmine McDaniel wanted to make sure his neighborhood mail carrier stayed cool and hydrated. So he left a cooler filled with a sports drink and water bottles on their front step. The family security camera recorded the mail carrier’s reaction: “Oh man, water and Gatorade. Thank God; thank you!”

Carmine’s mom says, “Carmine feels that it’s his ‘duty’ to supply the mailman with a cool beverage even if they’re not home.”

This story warms our hearts, but it also reminds us that there is One who will “meet all your needs,” as the apostle Paul phrased it. Though Paul was languishing in jail and uncertain about his future, he expressed joy for the Christians in Philippi because God had met his needs through their financial gift to him. The Philippian church was not wealthy, but they were generous, giving to Paul and others out of their poverty (SEE 2 CORINTHIANS 8:1–4). As the Philippians had met Paul’s needs, so God would meet theirs, “according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 4:19).

God often sends vertical help through horizontal means. Put another way, He sends us what we need through the help of others. When we trust Him for what we need, we learn, as Paul did, the secret of true contentment (VV 12–13). MARVIN WILLIAMS

달콤함과 쌉쌀함

쌉쌀한 맛의 초콜릿을 좋아하는 사람들이 있는가 하면 달콤한 것을 선호하는 사람들도 있습니다. 중미 지역의 고대 마야인들은 초콜릿을 음료로 즐겼고 고추를 넣어 먹기도 했습니다. 그들은 초콜릿을 “쌉쌀한 물”이라고 부르며 좋아했습니다. 오랜 후에 초콜릿이 스페인에 전해졌는데, 스페인 사람들은 달콤한 초콜릿을 선호해서 본래의 그 쓴 맛을 중화하려고 설탕과 꿀을 첨가했습니다.

우리의 날들도 초콜릿과 같아서 때론 쓰고 때론 달기도 합니다. 17세기 프랑스의 수도사 로렌스 형제는 “하나님께서 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지를 안다면, 우리는 언제나 그분의 손으로부터 단 것이든 쓴 것이든 똑같이 받을 준비가 되어 있어야 한다.”라고 썼습니다. 단 것과 쓴 것을 똑같이 받아들인다고요? 그것은 매우 어려운 일입니다! 로렌스 형제는 무엇을 말하려 했을까요? 그 답은 하나님의 성품에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 시편 기자는 하나님에 대해 “주는 선하사 선을 행하시오니”(시편 119:68)라고 말했습니다.

마야인들은 또한 쌉쌀한 초콜릿이 가진 치유력과 약용 성분을 가치 있게 여겼습니다. 마찬가지로 씁쓸한 날들도 가치가 있습니다. 그런 날들은 우리의 연약함을 깨닫게 해주고 하나님을 더 의지하게 해줍니다. 시편 기자는 “고난당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로 말미암아 내가 주의 율례들을 배우게 되었나이다”(71절)라고 기록했습니다. 하나님이 선하시다는 것을 확신하고, 오늘 여러 다른 맛으로 다가오는 삶을 받아들입시다. 우리 모두 “여호와여 주의 말씀대로 주의 종을 선대하셨나이다”(65절)라고 고백합시다.

Sweet and Bitter

Some people like bitter chocolate and some prefer sweet. Ancient Mayans in Central America enjoyed chocolate as a beverage and seasoned it with chili peppers. They liked this “bitter water,” as they called it. Many years later it was introduced in Spain, but the Spaniards preferred chocolate sweet, so they added sugar and honey to counteract its natural bitterness.

Like chocolate, days can be bitter or sweet as well. A seventeenth-century French monk named Brother Lawrence wrote, “If we knew how much [God] loves us, we would always be ready to receive equally . . . from His hand the sweet and the bitter.” Accept the sweet and the bitter equally? This is difficult! What is Brother Lawrence talking about? The key lies in God’s character. The psalmist said of God, “You are good, and what you do is good” (PSALM 119:68).

Mayans also valued bitter chocolate for its healing and medicinal properties. Bitter days have value too. They make us aware of our weaknesses and they help us depend more on God. The psalmist wrote, “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees” (V 71). Let us embrace life today, with its different flavors—reassured of God’s goodness. Let us say, “You have done many good things for me, LORD, just as you promised” (V 65 NLT). KEILA OCHOA

익명으로 베푼 친절

대학을 막 졸업했을 때 나는 식비로 일주일에 정확히 25달러 밖에 쓸 수 없는 상황이었습니다. 어느 날 식료품 가게 계산대에 줄을 서서 생각해 보니 내게 남아 있는 돈보다 내가 골라 담은 식료품 값이 조금 더 나올 것 같았습니다.

그래서 나는 직원에게 “총액이 20달러가 되면 멈춰 주세요.”라고 말했는데, 피망 한 봉지만 빼고는 다 구입할 수 있었습니다. 그런데 집으로 막 운전해서 가려고 할 때 어떤 남자가 내 차로 다가왔습니다.
그는 나에게 “아가씨, 여기 당신이 사려던 피망이요.”라고 말하며 봉지를 건네 주었습니다. 내가 고맙다는 말을 할 틈도 없이 그는 발길을 돌려 가버렸습니다.

그분이 베푼 소박한 선행을 생각하면 내 마음이 아직도 따뜻해지면서 마태복음 6장에서 예수님께서 하신 말씀이 떠오릅니다.
예수님은 보란 듯이 가난한 사람들에게 베푸는 사람들을 비판하시면서 (2절) 제자들에게 다른 방식을 가르쳐주셨습니다. 베풀면서 그들 자신이나 그들의 관대함을 드러내지 말고, 오른손이 하는 것을 왼손이
모르도록 은밀하게 베풀라고 주님은 권고하셨습니다(3절)!

한 사람의 드러내지 않는 친절이 나에게 깨우쳐주었던 것처럼, 우리는 베풀면서 결코 우리 자신을 드러내면 안 됩니다. 아낌없이 주시는 하나님께서 우리에게 아주 풍성히 베푸셨기 때문에 우리도 그저 베푸는 것입니다(고린도후서 9:6-11). 우리가 은밀히 관대하게 베풀 때, 우리는 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 보여주고, 하나님은 그분만이 받으셔야 할 감사를 받으십니다(11절).

Anonymous Kindness

When I first graduated from college, I found myself needing to adopt a strict grocery budget—twenty-five dollars a week, to be exact. One day, while enter-ing the checkout line, I suspected the groceries I’d selected cost slightly more than my remaining money. “Just stop when we reach twenty dollars,” I told the cashier, and I was able to purchase every-thing I’d selected but a bag of peppers.

As I was about to drive home, a man stopped by my car. “Here’s your peppers, ma’am,” he said, handing the bag to me. Before I had time to thank him, he was already walking away.

Remembering the simple goodness of this act of kindness still warms my heart and brings to mind Jesus’s words in Matthew 6. Criticizing those who made a show of giving to the needy (V 2), Jesus taught His disciples a different way. Instead of making giving all about them and their generosity, He urged that giving should be done so secretly it’s like their left hand isn’t even aware their right is giving (V 3)!

As one person’s anonymous kindness reminded me, giving should never be about us. We give only because of what our generous God has so lavishly given us (2 CORINTHIANS 9:6–11). As we give quietly and generously, we reflect who He is—and God receives the thanksgiving only He deserves (V 11). MONICA BRANDS

오직 이것을 위해 받은 멸시

수잔나 시버는 18세기에 성악가로서의 재능으로 명성을 얻었습니다. 하지만 그녀는 그 명성에 못지않은 불미스러운 결혼 문제로도 유명했습니다. 1742년 4월 더블린에서 헨델의 ‘메시아’가 초연되었을 때 청중들 중 많은 사람들이 그 이유 때문에 그녀가 주연 독창자로서의 역할을 맡은 것을 못마땅하게 여겼습니다.

첫 공연 중 시버가 “그는 멸시를 받아 사람들에게 버림받았으며 간고를 많이 겪었으며 질고를 아는 자라”(이사야 53:3)
라는 메시아의 노래를 부르고 있을 때 패트릭 델라니 목사는 그 가사에 너무 감동을 받아 벌떡 일어나서 “여인이여, 네 죄가 사함을 받았느니라!”라고 말했습니다.

수잔나 시버와 헨델의 ‘메시아’의 주제 사이에는 아주 분명한 연관성이 있습니다. “간고의 사람”인 메시아 예수는 ‘죄’ 때문에 “멸시 받고 버림받았습니다.” 이사야 선지자는 “나의 의로운 종이 많은 사람을 의롭게 하며 또 그들의 죄악을 친히 담당하리로다”(11절)라고 했습니다.

메시아와 우리의 관계 역시 아주 분명합니다. 우리가 비판적인 관객들의 입장이든, 수잔나 시버와 같은 위치에 있든, 아니면 그 중간 어느 지점에 있든, 우리는 모두 회개하고 하나님께 용서를 받아야 합니다.
예수님은 그분의 삶과 죽음, 그리고 부활을 통해서 하나님 우리 아버지와 우리의 관계를 회복시켜 주셨습니다.

오직 예수님이 행하신 일, 이것으로 말미암아 우리의 모든 죄가 용서를 받았습니다.

Despised for All of This

Susannah Cibber gained fame in the eighteenth century for her talent as a singer. However, she was equally well known for her scandalous marital problems. That’s why when Handel’s Messiah was first performed in Dublin in April 1742, many in the audience did not approve of her role as a featured soloist.

During that inaugural performance, Cibber sang of the Messiah: “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (ISAIAH 53:3 KJV). Those words so moved Rev. Patrick Delany that he jumped to his feet and said, “Woman, for this be all thy sins forgiven thee!”

The connection between Susannah Cibber and the theme of Handel’s Messiah is evident. The “man of sorrows”—Jesus the Messiah—was “despised and rejected” because of sin. The prophet Isaiah said, “My righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities” (V 11).

The connection between Messiah and us is no less apparent. Whether we stand with the judgmental audience members, with Susannah Cibber, or somewhere in between, we all need to repent and receive God’s forgiveness.
Jesus, by His life, death, and resurrection, restored our relationship with God our Father.

왕관

우리는 식탁에 둘러앉아 앞에 놓여있는 둥근 스티로폼에다 이쑤시개를 꽂았습니다. 부활절이 다가오는 몇 주간 동안 저녁식사 자리에서 우리는 가시관을 만들었습니다. 한 개 한 개의 이쑤시개는 그날그날 우리가 잘못을 저질러 그리스도가 그 값을 지불하셔야만 했던 죄를 상징하였습니다. 우리는 매일 저녁 그 일을 하면서 어떻게 우리가 잘못하여 죄인이 되었는지, 어떻게 우리에게 구주가 필요하게 되었는지, 어떻게 예수님이 십자가에 달려 죽으심으로 우리를 자유롭게 하셨는지를 깨닫게 되었습니다.

예수님에게 씌우기 위해 만들었던 가시 면류관은 예수님이 십자가에 달리시기 전에 로마 군인들이 가졌던 잔혹한 놀이의 일부였습니다. 그들은 예수님에게 왕의 옷을 입히고, 갈대를 왕의 홀처럼 들려주었다가 그것으로 예수님을 쳤습니다. 그들은 예수님을 조롱했고 자신들의 행동이 수천 년 후에도 기억될 것이라는 것을 깨닫지 못한 채 예수님을 “유대인의 왕”(마태복음 27:29)이라고 불렀습니다. 하지만 그는 평범한 왕이 아니었습니다. 예수님은 죽으시고 부활하심으로 우리에게 영생을 주시는 왕 중의 왕이셨습니다.

부활절 아침에 우리는 이쑤시개를 꽃으로 바꾸어놓고 죄의 용서와 새 생명의 선물을 기념하였습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 죄를 깨끗이
지우시고 그분 안에 있는 자유와 생명을 영원히 주셨다는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 기쁜지 모릅니다!

가시관이 생명의 왕관으로 바뀌었다.

The King’s Crown

We sat around the table, each person adding a toothpick to the foam disc before us. At our evening meal in the weeks leading up to Easter, we created a crown of thorns—with each toothpick signifying something we had done that day for which we were sorry and for which Christ had paid the penalty. The exercise brought home to us, night after night, how through our wrongdoing we were guilty and how we needed a Savior. And how Jesus freed us through His death on the cross.

The crown of thorns that Jesus was made to wear was part of a cruel game the Roman soldiers played before He was crucified. They also dressed Him in a royal robe and gave Him a staff as a king’s scepter, which they then used to beat Him. They mocked Him, calling Him “king of the Jews” (Matthew 27:29), not realizing that their actions would be remembered thousands of years later. This was no ordinary king. He was the King of Kings whose death, followed by His resurrection, gives us eternal life.

On Easter morning, we celebrated the gift of forgiveness and new life by replacing the toothpicks with flowers. What joy we felt, knowing that God had erased our sins and given us freedom and life forever in Him! - AMY BOUCHER PYE

비아 돌로로사

고난주간 동안 우리는 예수님이 십자가형을 지시기 바로 전 마지막 며칠을 기념합니다. 예수님이 십자가를 향하여 올라가시던 예루살렘의 거리는 오늘날 슬픔의 길이라는 뜻으로 비아 돌로로사라고 불립니다.

그러나 히브리서 저자는 예수님이 택하신 그 길을 단순히 슬픔의 길이라기보다는 훨씬 더 큰 의미로 보았습니다. 예수님이 골고다를
향하여 기꺼이 걸어가신 고통의 길은 우리가 하나님의 임재로 나아가게 해주는 “새로운 생명의 길”이 되었습니다(히브리서 10:20).

여러 세기 동안 유대인들은 짐승의 희생제물과 율법을 지킴으로 하나님의 임재로 나아가는 길을 찾았습니다. 그러나 “황소와 염소의 피가 능히 죄를 없이 하지 못”하기 때문에 율법은 “장차 올 좋은 일의 그림자일 뿐”이었습니다(1,4절).

예수님이 비아 돌로로사로 걸어가신 그 길은 주님의 죽으심과 부활로 이어졌습니다. 예수님의 희생이 있었기 때문에, 우리가 죄의
용서를 위해 주님을 믿을 때 거룩해질 수 있습니다. 비록 우리는 율법을 온전히 지킬 수는 없지만, 환영받고 사랑받는다는 완전한 확신을 가지고 두려움 없이 하나님께 나아갈 수 있습니다(10,22절).

그리스도의 슬픔의 길은 우리에게 하나님께 나아가는 새로운 생명의 길을 열어놓았습니다.

The Via Dolorosa

During Holy Week, we remember the final days before Jesus’s crucifixion. The road Jesus traveled to the cross through the streets of Jerusalem is known today as the Via Dolorosa, the way of sorrows.

But the writer of Hebrews viewed the path Jesus took as more than just a path of sorrows. The way of suffering that Jesus willingly walked to Golgotha made a “new and living way” into the presence of God for us (Hebrews 10:20).

For centuries the Jewish people had sought to come into God’s presence through animal sacrifices and by seeking to keep the law. But the law was “only a shadow of the good things that are coming,” for “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (vv. 1, 4).

Jesus’s journey down the Via Dolorosa led to His death and resurrection. Because of His sacrifice, we can be made holy when we trust in Him for the forgiveness of our sins. Even though we aren’t able to keep the law perfectly, we can draw near to God without fear, fully confident that we are welcomed and loved (vv. 10, 22).

Christ’s way of sorrow opened for us a new and living way to God. - AMY PETERSON

사랑의 대야

오래전 어느 날 물리 시간에 선생님이 뒤로 돌아보지 말고 교실의 뒷벽이 무슨 색인지 말해 보라고 했습니다. 주의 깊게 본 사람이 아무도 없었기에 그 누구도 대답을 못했습니다.

때때로 우리는 단순히 모든 것에 주의를 기울일 수 없다는 이유 때문에 인생의 “어떤 것”을 놓치거나 지나쳐버립니다. 그리고 때로는 늘 거기에 있어 온 것도 보지 못하기도 합니다.

최근에 예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻기는 이야기를 다시 읽었을 때 그와 같은 경우를 맞이하게 되었습니다. 이 이야기는 고난 주간 동안 자주 읽히기 때문에 아주 익숙한 이야기입니다. 우리의 구주시며 왕이신 분이 제자들의 발을 씻기기 위해 몸을 굽혔다는 것은 우리를 놀라게 합니다. 예수님 시대에 유대인 종들조차도 이런 일은 그들이 할 일이 아니라고 여겨 시키지 않았던 일입니다. 그러나 내가 그때까지 미처 알지 못했던 사실은, 인간이며 하나님이신 예수님이 유다의 발을 씻기셨다는 것입니다. 요한복음 13장 11절에서 보듯이 예수님은 유다가 자기를 배반할 것을 아셨지만, 여전히 자신을 낮추어 유다의 발을 씻기셨습니다.

한 대야의 물에 사랑이 넘쳐났습니다. 자기를 배신할 사람에게까지 나누어주신 사랑입니다. 우리가 예수님의 부활을 경축하는데까지 이어지는 이 주간의 사건들을 묵상할 때, 우리 또한 겸손의 선물을 받아 예수님의 사랑을 친구들은 물론 적들에게까지 베풀 수 있게 되기를 소원합니다.

Basin of Love

One day in physics class many years ago, our teacher asked us to tell him—without turning around—what color the back wall of the classroom was. None of us could answer, for we hadn’t noticed.

Sometimes we miss or overlook the “stuff” of life simply because we can’t take it all in. And sometimes we don’t see what’s been there all along.

It was like that for me as I recently read again the account of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet. The story is a familiar one, for it is often read during Passion Week. That our Savior and King would stoop to cleanse the feet of His disciples awes us. In Jesus’s day, even Jewish servants were spared this task because it was seen as beneath them. But what I hadn’t noticed before was that Jesus, who was both man and God, washed the feet of Judas. Even though He knew Judas would betray Him, as we see in John 13:11, Jesus still humbled Himself and washed Judas’s feet.

Love poured out in a basin of water—love that He shared even with the one who would betray Him. As we ponder the events of this week leading up to the celebration of Jesus’s resurrection, may we too be given the gift of humility so that we can extend Jesus’s love to our friends and any enemies. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

보고 침묵하라

멕시코 작곡가 루벤 소텔로는 “그를 보라” 라는 노래에서 십자가에 달리신 예수님을 묘사합니다. 그는 우리에게 예수님을 바라보고 침묵하라고 요청합니다. 예수님이 십자가에서 보여주신 그 같은 사랑 앞에서 우리는 진정 아무 할 말이 없기 때문입니다. 믿음으로 우리는 복음서에 기술된 그 장면을 상상할 수 있습니다. 십자가와 보혈, 못들, 그리고 그 고통을 상상할 수 있습니다.

예수님이 마지막 숨을 거두실 때 “이를 구경하러 모인 무리도......가슴을 두드리며 돌아갔고”(누가복음 23:48) 다른 이들은 “멀리서 이 일을” 지켜보았습니다(49절). 그들은 보았고 말이 없었습니다. 오직 백부장 한 사람이 “이 사람은 정녕 의인이었도다” (47절)라고 말했습니다.

많은 노래와 시가 이 위대한 사랑을 묘사하기 위해 쓰였습니다. 오래 전에 예레미야는 예루살렘이 파괴된 후 그 고통에 대해 이렇게

Look and Be Quiet

In the song “Look at Him,” Mexican composer Rubén Sotelo describes Jesus at the cross. He invites us to look at Jesus and be quiet, because there is really nothing to say before the type of love Jesus demonstrated at the cross. By faith we can imagine the scene described in the Gospels. We can imagine the cross and the blood, the nails, and the pain.

When Jesus breathed His last, those who “had gathered to witness this sight . . . beat their breasts and went away” (Luke 23:48). Others “stood at a distance, watching these things” (v. 49). They looked and were quiet. Only one spoke, a centurion, who said, “Surely this was a righteous man” (v. 47).

Songs and poems have been written to describe this great love. Many years before, Jeremiah wrote about Jerusalem’s pain after its devastation. “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?” (Lamentations 1:12). He was asking people to look and see; he thought there was no greater suffering than Jerusalem’s. However, has there been any suffering like Jesus’s suffering?

All of us are passing by the road of the cross. Will we look and see His love? This Easter, when words and poems are not enough to express our gratitude and describe God’s love, let us take a moment to ponder Jesus’s death; and in the quietness of our hearts, may we whisper to Him our deepest devotion. - KEILA OCHOA
