하나님의 음성 듣기

나는 잘 듣지 못합니다. 아버지가 말씀하시곤 했던 것처럼, “한 쪽 귀는 먹었고, 다른 쪽 귀로는 잘 듣지 못합니다.” 그래서 한 쌍의 보청기를 착용하고 있습니다.

주변 소음이 많은 환경에 있을 때를 제외하고는, 대부분의 시간에 보청기는 작동을 잘 합니다. 주변 소음이 심할 때는, 내 보청기가 방 안의 모든 음성들을 다 잡아내기 때문에 내 앞에 있는 사람의 말을 알아듣기가 힘듭니다.

우리의 문화도 그렇습니다. 불협화음을 이루는 여러 소리들로 하나님의 조용한 음성이 들리지 않을 수 있습니다. “어디에서 말씀이 찾아질 것이며, 어디에서 말씀이 울려 퍼질 것인가?”라고 시인 T.S. 엘리엇이 묻습니다. “이곳은 아니네, 침묵이 충분하지 않으므로.”

다행히 내 보청기는 주변 소음을 차단할 수 있는 장치가 있어, 내가 듣고자 하는 음성만을 들을 수 있게 해줍니다. 마찬가지로, 주변의 소리들에도 불구하고 우리의 영혼을 잠잠케 하고 귀를 기울인다면, 우리는 하나님의 “세미한 소리”(열왕기상 19:11-12)를 듣게 될 것입니다.

하나님은 쉬지 않고 갈망하는 우리를 불러 매일 우리에게 말씀하십니다. 그리고 우리의 아주 깊은 슬픔 속에서도, 불완전하고 만족스럽지 못한 우리의 가장 큰 기쁨 가운데서도 우리에게 말씀하십니다.

그러나 하나님은 주로 성경을 통해 말씀하십니다(데살로니가전서 2:13). 성경책을 찾아 읽으면, 당신도 하나님의 음성을 들을 것입니다. 하나님은 당신이 알고 있는 것 이상으로 당신을 사랑하시며, 하나님이 말씀하시는 것을 당신이 듣기를 원하십니다.

Listening to His Voice

I’m hard of hearing—“deaf in one ear and can’t hear out of the other,” as my father used to say. So I wear a set of hearing aids.

Most of the time the devices work well, except in environments where there’s a lot of surrounding noise. In those settings, my hearing aids pick up every voice in the room and I cannot hear the person in front of me.

So it is with our culture: a cacophony of sounds can drown out God’s quiet voice. “Where shall the Word be found, where will the Word resound?” poet T.S. Eliot asks. “Not here, there is not enough silence.”

Fortunately, my hearing aids have a setting that cuts out the surrounding sounds and enables me to hear only the voices I want to hear. In the same way, despite the voices around us, if we quiet our souls and listen, we will hear God’s “still small voice” (1 KINGS 19:11–12 NKJV ).

He speaks to us every day, summoning us in our restlessness and our longing. He calls to us in our deepest sorrow and in the incompleteness and dissatisfaction of our greatest joys.

But primarily God speaks to us in His Word (1 THESSALONIANS 2:13). As you pick up His book and read it, you too will hear His voice. He loves you more than you can ever know, and He wants you to hear what He has to say. DAVID H. ROPER

놀라워요!

우리의 원래의 상태로는 우리 모두 ‘그것’에 이르지 못합니다 (로마서 3:23).

예수님은 ‘그것’의 광채시며(히브리서 1:3), 그분을 아는 자들이 ‘그것’을 보았습니다(요한복음 1:14). 구약을 보면, ‘그것’이 성막에 충만하여(출애굽기 40:34-35), “그것” 이 이스라엘 백성들을 인도했습니다.

그리고 세상의 마지막 때에 천국은 ‘그것’으로 화려하게 빛이 나서 해나 달의 비침이 쓸데없게 된다고 약속하고 있습니다 (요한계시록 21:23).

위 문장들 속의 “그것”은 무엇일까요? “그것”은 ‘하나님의 영광’입니다. 그리고 하나님은 놀라우십니다!

성경은 그 전체를 통해 우리에게 우리가 하나님이 창조하신 이 땅에서 지낼 때 그분의 장엄하신 영광을 잠깐 엿볼 수 있다고 말합니다. 하나님의 영광은 하나님의 존재를 외적으로 드러내는 것으로 묘사됩니다. 우리가 하나님을 볼 수 없기에, 하나님은 우주의 장엄함이나 구원의 위대함, 우리 삶속에 성령님이 거하심 같은 것들을 통해 그분의 임재와 역사하심을 우리에게 분명히 보여주십니다.

오늘 하나님의 영광을, 하나님의 위대하심의 증거들을 찾아보십시오. 자연의 아름다움에서, 아이의 웃음에서, 다른 이들을 향한 사랑 속에서 그것을 볼 수 있을 것입니다. 하나님은 아직도 이 세상을 그분의 영광으로 채우고 계십니다.

It Is Amazing!

In our natural state, we all fall short of it (ROMANS 3:23). Jesus was the radiance of it (HEBREWS 1:3), and those who knew Him saw it (JOHN 1:14).

In the Old Testament, it filled the tabernacle (EXODUS 40:34–35), and the Israelites were led by it .

And we are promised that at the end of time, heaven will shine with it in splendor so great there will be no need for the sun (REVELATION 21:23).

What is the “it” in all those statements above?

“It” is the glory of God . And He is amazing!

Throughout the Bible we are told that we can enjoy glimpses of God’s magnificent glory as we dwell on this earth He has created. God’s glory is described as the external display of His being. Because we cannot see God, He gives us clear pictures of His presence and His work in things like the majesty of the universe, the greatness of our salvation, and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Today, look for God’s glory—for the evidence of His greatness. You’ll see it in nature’s beauty, a child’s laughter, and the love of others. God still fills the earth with His glory. DAVE BRANON

삶을 바꾸는 법

때때로 우리의 삶은 다른 사람들의 강력한 영향으로 순식간에 바뀔 수 있습니다. 로큰롤 음악의 전설 브루스 스프링스틴에게는, 그것은 힘들었던 유년기와 끊임없는 우울증과의 싸움을 거치는 동안 그를 도와주었던 음악가들의 작품들이었습니다. 그는 자신이 직접 경험했던 진실, “알맞은 노래로 3분 안에 누군가의 인생을 바꿀 수 있다”는 사실을 통해 자신의 작업의 의미를 찾았습니다.

마음을 사로잡는 노래처럼, 누군가의 정선된 말은 우리에게 희망을 줄 수도 있고, 심지어 우리 삶의 과정을 바꿀 수도 있습니다. 우리가 세상을 보는 방식을 바꿔주었던 선생님의 말씀이나, 자신감을 회복시켜 준 격려의 말들, 힘든 시간을 견디게 해준 친구의 따뜻한 말들처럼, 나는 우리 대부분이 우리의 삶에 영원한 영향을 준 대화에 관해 이야기할 것이 있다고 확신합니다.

아마도 이것 때문에 잠언서가 말을 소중히 여기고 현명하게 사용해야 할 우리의 책임을 강조하는데 그렇게 많은 시간을 할애하고 있는지도 모르겠습니다. 성경은 한 번도 말하는 것을 “그냥 잡담하는 것” 정도로 취급하지 않습니다. 오히려 그보다는 죽고 사는 것이 혀의 힘에 달렸다고 가르칩니다(18:21). 몇 마디 말로 우리는 누군가의 영혼을 파괴할 수도 있고, 아니면 지혜와 소망의 말로 다른 사람들을 키우고 강하게 만들 수도 있습니다(15:4).

우리 모두가 다 강력한 음악을 만들 능력을 지니고 있지는 않습니다. 그러나 우리 각자가 말을 통해 다른 사람들을 섬길 수 있도록 하나님의 지혜를 구할 수는 있습니다(시편 141:3). 정선된 몇 마디 말로도, 하나님은 우리를 사용하셔서 한 사람의 삶을 바꿀 수 있습니다.

How to Change a Life

Sometimes our lives can change in a moment through the powerful impact of others. For rock ’n’ roll legend Bruce Springsteen, it was the work of musical artists that helped him through a difficult childhood and a persistent struggle with depression. He found meaning in his own work through the truth he’d experienced firsthand, that “You can change someone’s life in three minutes with the right song.”

Like a compelling song, others’ well-chosen words can also give us hope, even change the course of our lives. I’m sure most of us could share stories of a conversation that forever impacted our lives—words from a teacher that changed the way we saw the world, words of encouragement that restored our confidence, gentle words from a friend that carried us through a difficult time.

Perhaps this is why the book of Proverbs spends so much time emphasizing our responsibility to treasure words and use them wisely. Scripture never treats speech as if it’s “just talk.” Instead, we are taught that our words can have life-or-death consequences (18:21). In just a few words we could crush someone’s spirit, or, through words of wisdom and hope, nourish and strengthen others (15:4).

Not all of us have the ability to create powerful music. But we each can seek God’s wisdom to serve others through our speech (PSALM 141:3). With just a few well-chosen words, God can use us to change a life. MONICA BRANDS

기회에 발 들여놓기

많은 사람들처럼 나도 운동을 충분히 하려고 애를 씁니다. 그래서 최근에 내 자신이 움직이도록 동기를 부여해주는 물건을 구했습니다. 그것은 걸음 수를 세는 계보기입니다. 간단한 물건에 지나지 않지만, 이 작은 기기가 내 동기부여에 얼마나 큰 차이를 가져다주는지 정말 놀랍습니다. 소파에서 일어나야 할 때 불평하는 대신, 나는 그것을 몇 걸음 더 걷는 기회로 봅니다. 아이에게 물 한 컵 가져다주는 것 같은 일상적인 일들은 내가 더 큰 목표를 향해가는 것을 돕는 기회가 됩니다. 그런 면에서 계보기는 나의 관점과 동기를 바꾸어놓았습니다. 이제 나는 가능할 때마다 몇 걸음을 더 걸으려고 합니다.

우리 그리스도인의 삶도 조금은 그렇지 않은가 싶습니다. 바울이 골로새서 4장 5절 에서 권고하는 것처럼, 매일 사람들을 사랑하고 섬기고 함께 소통할 기회들이 있습니다. 하지만 내가 늘 그런 순간들을 인식하고 있는지요? 외견상으로는 일상적인 관계처럼 보이는 상황에서 내가 격려하는 사람이 될 수도 있는 그런 기회들에 내가 주의를 기울이고 있는지요? 가족과 직장 동료로부터 식료품점 점원에 이르기까지 나와 관련된 모든 사람들의 삶속에 하나님은 일하고 계십니다. 그래서 나는 각각의 관계들 속에서 하나님이 일하고 계실지도 모를 그 상황에 늘 주의를 기울입니다. 비록 그것이 식당 종업원에게 친절하게 안부를 묻는 “작은” 일로 보이는 어떤 것일지라도 말입니다.

하나님이 보내주신 기회들에 우리가 주의를 기울이는 그 순간에 하나님이 어떻게 일하실지 누가 알겠습니까.

Stepping into Opportunity

Like lots of people, I struggle to get enough exercise. So I recently got something to motivate myself to move: a pedometer that counts steps. It’s a simple thing. But it’s amazing how much difference this gadget makes in my motivation. Instead of grumbling when I have to get off the couch, I see it as an opportunity to get a few more steps. Mundane tasks, like getting one of my kids a cup of water, become opportunities that help me work toward a larger goal. In that sense, my pedometer has changed my perspective and my motivation. Now I look to get extra steps in whenever possible.

I wonder if our Christian life isn’t a bit like that. There are opportunities to love and serve and interact with people every day, as Paul exhorts in Colossians 4:5. But am I always aware of those moments? Am I paying attention to opportunities to be an encourager in seemingly mundane interactions? God is at work in the lives of every person I relate to, from my family and coworkers to a clerk at the grocery store. Each interaction offers a chance for me to pay attention to what God might be doing—even if it’s something as seemingly “small” as kindly asking a server at a restaurant how she’s doing.

Who knows how God might work in those moments when we’re alert to the opportunities He sends our way. ADAM HOLZ

한 광고주가 미켈란젤로의 유명한 작품인 성경 속 영웅 다윗의 대리석 조각의 사진을 변조했을 때, 이탈리아 정부와 미술관 관계자들이 이의를 제기했습니다. 다윗을 새총 대신 군용 소총을 어깨에 걸치고 있는 모습으로 묘사하는 것은 “망치로 치거나 그보다 더 심한” 모독이라고 문화부 관계자가 말했습니다.

National Treasure

When an advertiser altered a photo of Michelangelo’s famous marble sculpture of the biblical hero David, Italy’s government and gallery officials objected. Picturing David with a military rifle slung over his shoulder (instead of his slingshot) would be a violation—“like taking a hammer to it or worse,” a cultural official said.

In first-century Jerusalem, David was remembered as the shepherd-songwriter and soldier-king of Israel’s fondest memories and greatest hopes. Prophets foretold that David’s descendant would finally defeat the enemies of Israel. So, centuries later, when crowds welcomed Jesus as the Son of David (MATTHEW 21:6–9), they were expecting Him to lead the revolt that would overthrow their Roman occupiers. Instead Jesus knocked over the tables of temple money-changers to restore His Father’s house as a house of prayer for all nations. Israel’s leaders were furious. This wasn’t the kind of Messiah and son of David they were looking for. So without realizing what they were doing, they called for Roman executioners to take a hammer to the hands and feet of the true glory of Israel.

Instead of stopping them, Jesus let Himself be lifted up on a cross of shame—defaced and disgraced. Only by resurrection would it be known that the true Son of David had defeated His enemies with love and enlisted the children of all nations to spread the word. MART DEHAAN

믿음을 세우는 기억들

음악이 울려 퍼지는 예배당 안에 들어서면서 송년 모임에 참석한 사람들을 둘러보았습니다. 지난해의 기도 제목들을 회상하니 기쁨과 소망이 내 마음에 가득했습니다. 우리 성도들은 부모 말을 안 듣는 아이들과, 사랑하는 사람들의 죽음과, 직장을 잃은 사람들과, 깨어진 관계들을 가지고 다 함께 슬퍼했었습니다. 그러나 우리는 또한 회심을 한 사람들과 치유된 관계들을 생각하며 하나님의 은혜를 경험하기도 했었습니다. 우리는 믿음의 승리와 결혼과 졸업과 하나님의 가족이 되는 세례의 순간들을 함께 기뻐했습니다. 또한 새로 태어나거나 입양된 아기들, 그리고 주님께 헌신하는 아이들 등, 정말 많은 사람들을 기쁨으로 맞이했습니다.

예레미야가 그의 “고초”와 “담즙”을 회상했듯이(예레미야애가 3:19), 우리 교회 성도들이 겪은 시련의 역사를 되돌아보면서 나는 “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 않는다”(22절)는 것을 믿었습니다. 예레미야 선지자가 지난날의 하나님의 신실하셨음을 다시 확신했듯이, “기다리는 자에게나 구하는 영혼들에게 여호와는 선하시도다”(25절)라는 그의 고백이 나를 위로해주었습니다.

그날 밤 우리 성도들 한 사람 한 사람은 삶을 변화시키시는 하나님의 사랑을 눈으로 보여주는 증인들이었습니다. 우리는 앞으로 무슨 일을 만나든지 서로 의지하는 그리스도의 지체들로서 주님을 의지할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그리고 계속해서 주님을 찾고 서로를 도와주면 우리도 예레미야처럼 하나님의 변함없는 성품과 신실하심을 기억하며 믿음이 더 강해져서 더 확실한 소망을 갖게 될 것입니다.

Faith-Building Memories

As I stepped into the music-filled sanctuary, I looked around at the crowd that had gathered for a New Year’s Eve party. Joy lifted my heart with hope, as I recalled the prayers of the previous year. Our congregation had collectively grieved over wayward children, deaths of loved ones, job losses, and broken relationships. But we’d also experienced God’s grace as we recalled changed hearts and healed personal connections. We’d celebrated victories, weddings, graduations, and baptisms into God’s family. We’d welcomed children born, adopted, or dedicated to the Lord, and more—so much more.

Reflecting over the history of trials our church family faced, much like Jeremiah remembered his “affliction” and his “wandering” (LAM 3:19), I believed that “because of the LORD ’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail” (V 22). As the prophet reassured himself of God’s past faithfulness, his words comforted me: “The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him” (V 25).

That night, each person in our congregation represented a tangible expression of God’s life-transforming love. Whatever we’d face in the years to come, as members of the interdependent body of Christ, we could rely on the Lord. And as we continue to seek Him and support one another, we can, as did Jeremiah, find our hope being ratified by faith-building memories of God’s unchanging character and dependability. - XOCHITL DIXON

완성의 때

한 해를 마무리할 때가 되면 아직 끝내지 못한 일들로 우리의 마음이 무겁기도 합니다. 가정과 직장에서 해야 할 일들은 끝이 없어 보이고, 오늘 끝내지 못한 일들은 내일로 이어집니다. 그러나 우리는 믿음의 여정에서 잠시 멈추어 하나님의 신실하심과 우리가 끝낸 일들을 감사하는 시간을 가져야 합니다.

바울과 바나바는 첫 선교여행을 마친 후 “거기서 배를 타고 안디옥으로 돌아왔는데 이 안디옥은 그들이 지금 완성한 그 일을 위해 전에 하나님의 은혜로 전도의 사명을 받고 떠난 곳이었습니다”(사도행전 14:26, 현대인의 성경). 사람들에게 예수님의 말씀을 전하는 일이 아직도 많이 남아 있었지만 그들은 시간을 내어 그동안 이루었던 일들을 감사하는 시간을 가졌습니다. “그들은 교회 신자들을 모으고 하나님이 그들과 함께 행하신 모든 일과 이방인들에게 믿음의 문을 열어주신 것을 보고하였습니다” (27절, 현대인의 성경).

지난 일 년, 하나님께서 당신을 통해 행하신 일은 무엇입니까? 당신이 알고 사랑하는 사람들에게 하나님이 어떻게 믿음의 문을 열어주셨습니까? 하나님은 사소하고 불완전해 보이는 일들 속에서도상상외의 방법으로 우리를 통해 일을 하고 계십니다.

우리가 주님을 섬기면서 아직 다 완성하지 못한 일들로 마음이 아플 때에도, 주님이 그분의 방식대로 우리를 통해 일하셨던 것을 감사하십시다. 하나님께서 그분의 은혜로 행하신 일들을 우리가 기뻐하면 앞으로 또 하실 일들의 발판이 놓이는 것입니다!

Times of Completion

At the end of the year, the burden of uncompleted tasks can weigh us down. Responsibilities at home and work may seem never-ending, and those unfinished today roll into tomorrow. But there are times in our journey of faith when we should pause and celebrate God’s faithfulness and the tasks completed.

After the first missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas, “they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed” (ACTS 14:26). While much work remained in sharing the message of Jesus with others, they took time to give thanks for what had been done. “They gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles” (V 27).

What has God done through you during the past year? How has He opened the door of faith for someone you know and love? In ways we can’t imagine, He is at work through us in tasks that may seem insignificant or incomplete.

When we feel painfully aware of our unfinished tasks in serving the Lord, let’s not forget to give thanks for the ways He has worked through us. Rejoicing over what God has done by His grace sets the stage for what is to come! - D AVID C. MCCASLAND

눈에 아른거리는 것

벌새의 영어 이름 허밍버드는 날개를 빠르게 쳐서 내는 윙윙거리는 소리에서 유래합니다. 포르투갈어로는 “꽃에 입 맞추는 새”, 스페인어로는 “날아다니는 보석”이라는 뜻의 이름도 있습니다. 이 새의 이름 중 내가 좋아하는 것의 하나는 ‘비울루’인데, 이것은 멕시코 원주민 사포텍 언어로 “눈에 아른거리는 것”이라는 뜻입니다. 다시 말해 벌새는 한번 보면 결코 잊을 수가 없다는 것입니다.

체스터튼은 “이 세상은 놀라운 것들로 가득하다. 다만 감동하는 마음이 있는 사람에게만.”이라고 썼습니다. 벌새도 이런 놀라운 것들 중의 하나입니다. 이 작은 창조물이 그토록 매혹적인 이유는 무엇일까요? 아마도 그것은 작은 크기이거나 (평균 2-3인치, 5-7.5센티미터), 아니면 1초에 50-200번이나 퍼덕거리는 날개의 속도 때문인지도 모릅니다.

시편 104편은 누가 썼는지 확실히 알 수 없지만 이 시편의 기자는 자연의 아름다움에 완전히 사로잡혔던 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그는 레바논의 백향목과 들나귀와 같이 많은 놀라운 창조물들을 묘사한 후에, “여호와는 자신께서 행하시는 일들로 말미암아 즐거워하시리로다” (31절)라고 노래합니다. 그리고 “나의 기도를 기쁘게 여기시기를 바라나니” (34절)라고 기도합니다.

자연은 너무나 아름답고 완벽하여서 우리 눈에 아른거리게 하는 것은 얼마든지 있습니다. 우리가 어떻게 이것들을 묵상하며 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 있을까요? 하나님의 작품들을 깊이 생각하며 그 신비로움을 새삼 발견할 때 그것들을 보면서, 기뻐하면서, 하나님께 감사할 수 있습니다.

What Remains in the Eye

The hummingbird gets its English name from the hum made by its rapidly beating wings. In other languages, it is known as the “flower-kisser” (Portuguese) or “flying jewels” (Spanish). One of my favorite names for this bird is biulu, “what remains in the eye” (Mexican Zapotec). In other words, once you see a hummingbird, you’ll never forget it.

G. K. Chesterton wrote, “The world will never starve for want of wonders, but only for want of wonder.” The hummingbird is one of those wonders. What is so fascinating about these tiny creatures? Maybe it is their small size (averaging two to three inches) or the speed of their wings that can flap from 50 to 200 times per second.

We aren’t sure who wrote Psalm 104, but the psalmist was certainly captivated by nature’s beauty. After describing many of creation’s wonders, like the cedars of Lebanon and the wild donkeys, he sings, “May the LORD rejoice in his works” (V 31). Then he prays, “May my meditation be pleasing to him” (V 34).

Nature has plenty of things that can remain in the eye because of their beauty and perfection. How can we meditate on them and please God? We can observe, rejoice, and thank God as we contemplate His works and recapture the wonder. - KEILA OCHOA

일상의 순간들

쇼핑한 식료품들을 차에 싣고 조심스럽게 주차장을 빠져 나왔습니다. 그런데 한 남자가 내 차를 못 보고 갑자기 앞으로 뛰어들어 길을 건너는 것이었습니다. 나는 브레이크를 급히 밟아 간신히 피할 수 있었습니다. 그 사람은 깜짝 놀라 쳐다보면서 나와 눈이 마주쳤습니다. 그 순간 나는 눈을 부릅뜨고 화를 내거나, 괜찮다는 미소를 보내거나, 둘 중 하나를 선택해야 한다는 것을 알았습니다. 나는 미소를 지었습니다.

그 사람도 안도하는 모습을 보이며 입가에 감사의 미소를 지었습니다.

잠언 15장 13절은 “마음의 즐거움은 얼굴을 빛나게 하여도 마음의 근심은 심령을 상하게 하느니라”라고 말합니다. 이것은 우리 삶에서 일어나는 모든 방해나 실망이나 불편함 속에서도 즐겁게 활짝 웃으라는 것일까요? 물론 아닙니다! 우리는 때로 불의 앞에서 진정으로 애통해하고 실망하고 분노하기까지 해야 합니다. 그러나 우리의 일상의 순간들에는 미소가 우리에게 계속 필요한 안도와 희망과 은혜를 가져다줍니다.

아마도 잠언에서 미소는 우리 내면의 마음이 자연스럽게 드러나는 것이라고 말하는 것 같습니다. “마음의 즐거움”은 평화롭고 만족하며 하나님의 최선에 복종하는 자세를 말합니다. 우리에게 내면에서 밖으로 나오는 그런 즐거운 마음이 있다면 갑작스러운 상황에서도 참된 미소로 응할 수 있고 다른 사람들도 하나님과 함께 하면서 경험할 수 있는 소망과 화평을 얻도록 인도할 수 있을 것입니다.

Everyday Moments

I piled groceries in my car and carefully exited my parking spot. Suddenly a man darted across the pavement just in front of me, not noticing my approach. I slammed on my brakes, just missing him. Startled, he looked up and met my gaze. In that moment, I knew I had a choice: respond with rolled-eye frustration or offer a smiling forgiveness. I smiled.

Relief flickered across his face, raising the edges of his own lips in gratefulness.

Proverbs 15:13 says, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Is the writer directing us to cheery grins in the face of every interruption, disappointment, and inconvenience life brings? Surely not! There are times for genuine mourning, despair, and even anger at injustice. But in our everyday moments, a smile can offer relief, hope, and the grace needed to continue.

Perhaps the point of the proverb is that a smile naturally results from the condition of our inner beings. A “happy heart” is at peace, content, and yielded to God’s best. With such a heart, happy from the inside out, we can respond to surprising circumstances with a genuine smile, inviting others to embrace the hope and peace they too can experience with God. - ELISA MORGAN

감사 일기

내가 예수님을 처음 믿게 되었을 때 나를 영적으로 이끌어주던 사람이 내게 감사 일기를 쓰도록 권해주었습니다. 나는 어디를 가든 작은 노트를 들고 다녔습니다. 때로는 감사할 일을 즉시 기록하고, 어떤 때는 한 주를 돌아보는 주말에 쓰기도 했습니다.

찬양할 일들을 적는 것은 좋은 습관입니다. 나는 이것을 내 삶에서 다시 시작해보려고 합니다. 그러면 하나님의 임재를 깨닫고 그분의 베푸심과 보살피심에 더 감사하게 될 것입니다.

가장 짧은 시편인 117편에서 기자는 “우리에게 향하신 여호와의 인자하심이 크시므로”(2절) 모든 사람이 하나님을 찬양하라고 권면합니다.

한번 생각해보십시오. 주님께서 오늘, 이번 주, 이번 달 그리고 올해에 당신을 향해 그분의 사랑을 어떻게 보여주셨습니까? 특별한 것들을 찾지 마십시오. 하나님의 사랑은 평범하고 일상적인 삶 속에 나타납니다. 그 다음 주님께서 당신의 가족이나 교회, 그리고 다른 사람들에게 그의 사랑을 어떻게 보여주셨는지 생각해보십시오. 우리 모두를 향한 주님의 사랑을 마음껏 받아들이십시오.

시편기자는 이어서 “여호와의 진실하심이 영원함이로다”(2절)라고 하였습니다. 다시 말해 하나님은 계속해서 우리를 사랑하실 것입니다! 그래서 우리는 앞으로도 계속해서 하나님을 찬양할 많은 것들을 누리게 될 것입니다. 큰 사랑을 받는 하나님의 자녀로서 그분을 찬양하고 감사하는 것이 우리 삶의 진정한 모습이 되기를 소원합니다!

특별한 것뿐만 아니라 평범한 것에도 하나님께 감사해야 한다는 것을 기억하라.

Thanks Journal

When I was a new believer in Jesus, a spiritual mentor encouraged me to keep a thanks journal. It was a little booklet I carried with me everywhere I went. Sometimes I would record a thanksgiving right away. Other times, I would pen it at the end of the week during a time of reflection.

Taking note of praise items is a good habit—one I’m considering re-establishing in my life. It would help me to be mindful of God’s presence and grateful for His provision and care.

In the shortest of all the psalms, Psalm 117, the writer encourages everyone to praise the Lord because “great is his love toward us” (V 2).

Think about it: How has the Lord shown His love toward you today, this week, this month, and this year? Don’t just look for the spectacular. His love is seen in the ordinary, everyday circumstances of life. Then consider how He has shown His love toward your family, your church, and to others. Let your mind soak up the extent of His love for all of us.

The psalmist added that “the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever” (V 2 EMPHASIS ADDED). In other words, He will continue to love us! So we will continue to have many things to praise God for in the coming days. As His dearly loved children, may praising and thanking God characterize our lives! - POH FANG CHIA
