큰 세상, 더 큰 하나님

우리가 미시간 북부 지역을 운전하며 갈 때에 말린이 “세상이 얼마나 큰지 믿을 수가 없어요!”라고 탄성을 질렀습니다. 바로 그 순간 우리는 적도와 북극의 중간 지점인 북위 45도를 알려주는 표지판을 지나고 있었습니다. 우리는 우리가 얼마나 작은 존재이며 이 세상이 얼마나 넓은지에 대해 이야기하였습니다. 그러나 우주의 크기에 비하면 우리의 작은 행성인 이 지구도 아주 작은 티끌에 지나지 않습니다.

우리의 세상이 크고 우주가 그보다 엄청나게 더 광대하다면 온 우주를 능력으로 창조하신 분은 얼마나 크신 분일까요? 성경은 말합니다. “만물이 [예수님]에게서 창조되되 하늘과 땅에서 보이는 것들과 보이지 않는 것들과 혹은 왕권들이나 주권들이나 통치자들이나 권세들이나 만물이 다 그로 말미암아 그를 위하여 창조되었고” (골로새서 1:16).

이것은 좋은 소식입니다. 왜냐하면 우주를 창조하신 예수님이 바로 우리의 죄로부터 우리를 매일, 그리고 영원히 구원하시기 위해 세상에 오신 분이기 때문입니다. 예수님은 돌아가시기 전날 밤 “이것을 너희에게 이르는 것은 너희로 내 안에서 평안을 누리게 하려 함이라 세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하나 담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라” (요한복음 16:33)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

인생의 크고 작은 문제들 앞에서 우리는 우주를 만드셨고, 죽었다가 부활하셨고, 깨어진 이 세상을 이기신 그분을 찾아야 합니다. 우리가 힘들어할 때 주님은 능력으로 우리에게 주님의 평화를 주십니다.

Big World, Bigger God

As we drove through northern Michigan, Marlene exclaimed, “It’s unbelievable how big the world is!” She made her comment as we passed a sign marking the 45th parallel —the point halfway between the equator and the North Pole. We talked about how small we are and how vast our world is. Yet, compared to the size of the universe, our tiny planet is only a speck of dust.

If our world is great, and the universe is vastly greater, how big is the One who powerfully created it? The Bible tells us, “For by [Jesus] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (COL 1:16 NASB ).

This is good news because this same Jesus who created the universe is the One who has come to rescue us from our sin for every day and forever. The night before He died, Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (JOHN 16:33 NASB ).

When facing the large and small challenges of life, we call on the One who made the universe, died and rose again, and won victory over this world’s brokenness. In our times of struggle, He powerfully offers us His peace. - B ILL CROWDER

영웅 그 이상

전 세계 스타워즈 팬들이 8편 ‘마지막 제다이’가 나오기를 손꼽아 기다리는 가운데 사람들은 1977년 시작된 이 영화의 놀라운 성공의 이유를 지속적으로 분석합니다. 씨엔엔머니의 미디어 기자 프랭크 팔로터는 스타워즈는 “세계가 영웅을 필요로 하는 때에 선에 대한 새로운 희망과 힘”을 갈망하는 수많은 사람들에게 공감을 준다고 말했습니다.

예수님 탄생즈음 에 이스라엘 사람들은 압제 속에서 오래 전부터 약속된 구세주를 갈망하고 있었습니다. 많은 사람들이 로마의 폭정으로부터 해방시켜 줄 영웅을 고대하였습니다. 하지만 예수님은 정치적이나 군사적인 영웅으로 오시지 않고, 대신 베들레헴 마을에 한 아기로 태어나셨습니다. 그래서 많은 사람들은 그가 주님임을 알아보지 못했습니다. 요한 사도는 “자기 땅에 오매 자기 백성이 영접하지 아니하였다”(요한복음 1:11)라고 기록하였습니다.

예수님은 영웅 그 이상의, 우리의 구주로 오셨습니다. 주님은 하나님의 빛을 어둠 속에 비추기 위해, 그리고 자신을 희생하여 그를 영접하는 사람은 누구나 용서 받고 죄의 권세로부터 자유롭게 하기 위해 이 땅에 태어나셨습니다. 요한은 주님을 가리켜 “아버지의 독생자의 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라”(14절)라고 하였습니다.

“영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니”(12절). 참으로 예수님은 세상이 필요로 하는 유일한 참 소망이십니다.

More Than a Hero

As Star Wars fans around the world eagerly await the release of Episode 8, “The Last Jedi,” people continue to analyze the remarkable success of these films dating back to 1977. Frank Pallotta, media reporter for CNNMoney, said that Star Wars connects with many who long for “a new hope and a force of good at a time when the world needs heroes.”

At the time of Jesus’s birth, the people of Israel were oppressed and longing for their long-promised Messiah. Many anticipated a hero to deliver them from Roman tyranny, but Jesus did not come as a political or military hero. Instead, He came as a baby to the town of Bethlehem. As a result, many missed who He was. The apostle John wrote, “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him” (JOHN 1:11).

More than a hero, Jesus came as our Savior. He was born to bring God’s light into the darkness and to give His life so that everyone who receives Him could be forgiven and freed from the power of sin. John called Him “the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (V 14).

“To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (V 12). Indeed, Jesus is the one true hope the world needs. - DAVID C. MCCASLAND

하나님의 도움으로

나이가 들면서 점점 악화되는 관절통은 특히 추운 날씨면 더 심해집니다. 어떤 날은 나이 들면서 생기는 어려움을 이겨내는 것보다는 그 어려움에 굴복할 수밖에 없다는 느낌을 더 갖습니다.

그래서 나의 영웅은 나이가 많았던 갈렙이라는 노인입니다. 그는 일찍이 모세가 약속의 땅 가나안에 파견했던 정탐꾼이었습니다(신명기 13-14). 다른 정탐꾼들은 돌아와서 비관적인 보고를 하였지만 결국에는 열 두 지파의 정탐꾼 중 갈렙과 여호수아만이 하나님의 은총을 받아 가나안에 들어갑니다. 여호수아 14장을 보면 갈렙이 자기에게 할당된 땅을 받을 차례가 되었습니다. 그러나 그곳에는 아직도 몰아내야 할 적이 있었습니다. 은퇴해서 젊은이들에게 전쟁을 넘겨주는 것을 원치 않았던 갈렙은 이렇게 선언했습니다. “당신도 그 날에 들으셨거니와 그곳에는 아낙 사람이 있고 그 성읍들은 크고 견고할지라도 여호와께서 나와 함께 하시면 내가 여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 그들을 쫓아내리이다”(여호수아 14:12).

“여호와께서 나와 함께 하시면.” 이 사고방식으로 갈렙은 언제나 싸울 준비가 되어있었습니다. 갈렙은 자신의 힘이나 경륜보다는 하나님의 능력에 초점을 두었고 하나님도 그를 도와 무엇이든 이룰 수 있게 해주셨습니다.

우리 대부분은 어느 정도의 나이가 되면 큰일을 감당하려 하지 않습니다. 그러나 나이에 상관없이 여전히 하나님을 위하여 큰일을 할 수 있습니다. 갈렙처럼 큰 기회가 우리에게 올 때 주저하며 피할 필요가 없습니다. 주님이 우리와 함께 하시면 정복할 수 있습니다!

With God's Help

As I’ve grown older, I’ve noticed more joint pain, especially when cold weather hits. Some days, I feel less like a conqueror and more like someone conquered by the challenges of becoming a senior citizen.

That’s why my hero is an older man named Caleb—the former spy sent by Moses to scout out Canaan, the Promised Land (NUM 13–14). After the other spies gave an unfavorable report, Caleb and Joshua were the only spies out of the twelve whom God favored to enter Canaan. Now, in Joshua 14, the time for Caleb to receive his portion of land had come. But there were enemies still to drive out. Not content to retire and leave the battle to the younger generation, Caleb declared, “You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said” (JOSH 14:12).

“The LORD helping me.” That’s the kind of mindset that kept Caleb battle-ready. He focused on God’s power, not his own, nor on his advanced age. God would help him do whatever needed to be done.

Most of us don’t think of taking on anything monumental when we reach a certain age. But we can still do great things for God, no matter how old we are. When Caleb-sized opportunities come our way, we don’t have to shy away from them. With the Lord helping us, we can conquer! - LINDA WASHINGTON

눈처럼 희게

지난 12월 가족들과 함께 산으로 갔습니다. 평생을 열대기후에서 살았기 때문에 웅장한 눈의 모습을 보게 된 것은 그때가 처음이었습니다. 하얗게 뒤덮인 땅을 감상하고 있을 때 남편은 “너희의 죄가 주홍 같을지라도 눈과 같이 희어질 것이요” (이사야 1 : 1 8 )라는 이사야서의 구절을 인용하였습니다.

세 살짜리 딸이 진홍색이 무엇을 뜻하는지 물은 후 “빨간색은 나쁜 것이에요?” 라고 물었습니다. 딸은 하나님이 죄를 싫어하신다는 것을 알지만 이 구절은 색깔에 대해 말하고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 이사야 선지자는 여기서 조그마한 곤충의 알에서 뽑아낸 밝은 빨간색의 염색제를 묘사하고 있습니다. 이 염색제로 옷을 두 번 물들이면 색이 고착됩니다. 비가 오거나 세탁을 해도 색이 빠지지 않습니다. 죄도 그와 같습니다. 죄는 마음속에 깊이 뿌리 박혀 있어서 인간의 어떤 노력으로도 없앨 수 없습니다.

오직 하나님만이 우리 마음속의 죄를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있습니다. 우리는 산을 보며 진홍색으로 물들여진 옷을 아무리 문지르고 표백하여도 볼 수 없는 순백의 색에 감탄하였습니다. “그러므로 너희가 회개하고 돌이켜 너희 죄 없이 함을 받으라”(사도행전 3:19)라고 한 베드로의 가르침을 우리가 따를 때, 하나님은 우리를 용서하시고 우리에게 새로운 삶을 주십니다. 오직 예수님의 희생으로 우리는 어느 누구도 줄 수 없는 순결한 마음을 받을 수 있습니다. 이 얼마나 멋진 선물입니까!

White as Snow

Last December, my family and I went to the mountains. We had lived in a tropical climate all our lives, so it was the first time we could see snow in all its magnificence. As we contemplated the white mantle covering the fields, my husband quoted Isaiah, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (ISAIAH 1:18).

After asking about the meaning of scarlet, our three-year-old daughter asked, “Is the color red bad?” She knows sins are things God dislikes, but this verse is not talking about colors. The prophet was describing the bright red dye obtained from the eggs of a small insect. Clothes would be double-dyed in this bright red so the color became fixed. Neither rain nor washing would remove it. Sin is like that. No human effort can take it away. It’s rooted in the heart.

Only God can cleanse a heart from sin. And as we looked at the mountains, we admired the pure whiteness that scrubbing and bleaching a piece of cloth dyed in scarlet red can’t achieve. When we follow Peter’s teaching, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out” (ACTS 3:19), God forgives us and gives us a new life. Only through Jesus’s sacrifice can we receive what no one else can give—a pure heart. What a wonderful gift! KEILA OCHOA

능하시고 항상 계신

남편이 직장에서 일하고 있을 때 엄마의 암 진단 소식을 전해 들었습니다. 남편에게 메시지를 남기고 친구들과 가족들에게 연락을 하려했지만 아무도 연결이 되지 않았습니다. 나는 떨리는 손으로 얼굴을 가리고 흐느꼈습니다. “도와주세요, 주님.” 그때 하나님께서 나와 함께 하신다는 확신이 들었고, 철저하게 외로움을 느끼던 그 순간에 나를 위로해주었습니다.

남편이 집에 오고 친구와 가족들로부터 위로의 말을 들으면서 나는 주님께 감사 하였습니다. 그렇지만, 혼자 슬퍼하던 그 몇 시간 동안 하나님이 나와 함께 하고 계신다는 것을 평온함 가운데 깨닫게 되면서, 하나님은 내가 도움이 필요할 때 어디서나 언제든지 즉시, 그리고 신실하게 도와주신다는 것을 확신할 수 있었습니다.

시편 46편에서 저자는 하나님이 우리의 피난처시고 힘이시며 환난 때에 언제나 돕는 분이시라고 고백합니다(1절). 우리가 혼란 가운데 둘러싸여 있는 것 같고, 견고하리라 생각했던 모든 것이 무너져 내리는 것 같이 느껴질 때 우리는 두려워할 필요가 없습니다(2-3절). 하나님은 흔들리는 분이 아니십니다 (4-7절). 하나님의 능력은 분명하고 유효합니다(8-9절). 우리의 영원한 지지자이신 주님은 그분의 변하지 않는 성품을 우리가 확신할 수 있게 해주십니다(10절). 우리의 안전한 피난처이신 주님은 우리와 영원히 함께 계십니다(11절).

하나님은 그의 백성들을 기도로 서로 지원하고 격려하게 만드셨습니다. 하지만 동시에 하나님은 언제나 전능하시며 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 확증해주십니다. 우리가 하나님께 구할 때, 우리는 하나님이 우리에게 공급해주신다는 약속을 지키시는 분임을 믿을 수 있습니다. 하나님은 친히 찾아오실 뿐 아니라 그분의 백성을 통해 우리를 위로해주실 것입니다.

Able and Available

My husband was at work when I received news about my mom’s cancer diagnosis. I left him a message and reached out to friends and family. None were available. Covering my face with trembling hands, I sobbed. “Help me, Lord.” A resulting assurance that God was with me comforted me through those moments when I felt utterly alone.

I thanked the Lord when my husband came home and support from friends and family trickled in. Still, the calming awareness of God’s presence I sensed in those first few hours of lonely grieving affirmed that God is readily and faithfully available wherever and whenever I need help.

In Psalm 46, the psalmist proclaims God is our sanctuary, strength, and steadfast supporter (V 1). When it feels as if we’re surrounded by chaos or everything we thought was stable crashes down around us, we don’t have to fear (VV 2–3). God doesn’t falter (VV 4–7). His power is evident and effective (VV 8–9). Our eternal Sustainer gives us confidence in His unchanging character (V 10). The Lord, our secure stronghold, remains with us forever (V 11).

God created His followers to prayerfully support and encourage one another. But He also affirms He is always able and available. When we call on God, we can trust Him to keep His promises to provide for us. He will comfort us through His people as well as through His personal presence. XOCHITL DIXON

어린아이처럼

오래 전 어느 날 저녁, 두 살 난 어린 딸과 잠자리 기도를 마친 후 아이가 “엄마, 예수님이 어디 있어요?”라고 물어서 아내가 무척 놀랐습니다.

아내는 대답했습니다. “예수님은 하늘에 계시고 또 모든 곳에 계시지. 여기 우리와도 함께 계셔. 그리고 예수님은 만약 네가 들어오시기를 부탁하면 네 마음속에도 계실 수 있단다.”

“난 예수님이 내 마음에 계시기를 원해요.”

“언제든 그분에게 요청해 보렴.”

“난 ‘지금 당장’ 예수님이 내 마음에 들어오시라고 할래요.”

그래서 우리 어린 딸은 “예수님, 내 마음 속에 들어오시고 나와 함께 해주세요.” 라고 말했습니다. 그리고 주님과 함께 하는 딸아이의 믿음의 여정은 시작되었습니다.

예수님의 제자들이 주님에게 천국에서 가장 큰 자가 누구냐고 물었을 때, 주님은 한 어린아이를 불러 그들 가운데 세우시고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 18:1-2). “너희가 돌이켜 어린아이들과 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라......또 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이니”(3-5절).

예수님의 관점을 통해 우리는 믿는 한 아이를 우리 믿음의 본보기로 볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 주님께 마음을 여는 모든 사람들을 받아들이라는 말씀을 듣습니다. “어린아이들을 용납하고 내게 오는 것을 금하지 말라 천국이 이런 사람의 것이니라”(19:14)라고 예수님이 말씀하셨습니다.

Like a Little Child

One evening many years ago, after saying a goodnight prayer with our two-year-old daughter, my wife was surprised by a question. “Mommy, where is Jesus?”

Luann replied, “Jesus is in heaven and He’s everywhere, right here with us. And He can be in your heart if you ask Him to come in.”

“I want Jesus to be in my heart.”

“One of these days you can ask Him.”

“I want to ask Him to be in my heart now .”

So our little girl said, “Jesus, please come into my heart and be with me.” And that started her faith journey with Him.

When Jesus’s disciples asked Him who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, He called a little child to come and join them (MATTHEW 18:1–2). “Unless you change and become like little children,” Jesus said, “you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. . . . And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (VV 3–5).

Through the eyes of Jesus we can see a trusting child as our example of faith. And we are told to welcome all who open their hearts to Him. “Let the little children come to me,” Jesus said, “and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (19:14). DAVID C. MCCASLAND

기쁨

나는 노년의 “겨울”이라는 새로운 계절로 빠르게 다가가고 있지만, 아직 거기에 도달한 것은 아닙니다. 비록 세월이 온 힘을 다해 달려가고 있고 그래서 때로는 그 흐름을 늦추고 싶지만, 나에게는 나 자신을 지탱해주는 기쁨이 있습니다. 하루하루는 주님께서 내게 주시는 새로운 날입니다. 시편기자처럼, 나도 “주의 이름을 찬양하고 아침마다 주의 인자하심을 알리며 밤마다 주의 성실하심을 베품이 좋으니이다”(시편 92:1-2)라고 말할 수 있습니다.

비록 내 삶에도 힘든 일들이 있고 때로는 다른 이들의 고통과 어려움이 나를 짓누르기도 하지만, 하나님은 내 마음을 “[주께서] 행하신 일로 나를 기쁘게 하셨으니 내가 주의 일로 기뻐 [합니다]”(4절, 현대인의 성경)라고 한 시편기자와 같게 해주십니다. 가족이나 친구, 그리고 만족스러운 직업 같이 받은 축복으로 인한 기쁨. 하나님의 놀라운 창조와 그분의 영감의 말씀이 주는 기쁨. 우리를 너무 사랑하셔서 우리 죄를 위해 돌아가신 예수님으로 인한 기쁨. 그리고 주님이 우리에게 참 기쁨의 ‘근원’이신 성령님을 주신 것으로 인한 기쁨(로마서 15:13). 주님 때문에, 주님을 믿는 자들은 “종려나무 같이 번성하며......늙어도 여전히 결실하게”(시편 92:12-14) 될 것입니다.

그것이 어떤 열매일까요? 우리의 상황이나 인생의 계절과 무관하게, 우리는 삶과 말을 통해서 주님의 사랑의 본이 될 수 있습니다. 주님을 알고 주님을 위해 살면서 다른 이들에게 주님을 알릴 때 그 속에 기쁨이 있습니다.

Joy

I’m fast approaching a new season—the “winter” of old age—but I’m not there yet. Even though the years are galloping by and sometimes I’d like to slow them down, I have joy that sustains me. Each day is a new day given me by the Lord. With the psalmist, I can say, “It is good to praise the LORD . . . proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night”! (PSALM 92:1–2).

Even though my life has its struggles and the pain and difficulties of others sometimes overwhelms me, God enables me to join the psalmist in “[singing] for joy at what [His] hands have done” (V 4). Joy for blessings given: family, friends, and satisfying work. Joy because of God’s wondrous creation and His inspired Word. Joy because Jesus loved us so much He died for our sins. And joy because He gave us the Spirit, the source of true joy (ROMANS 15:13). Because of the Lord, believers in Him can “flourish like a palm tree . . . [and] still bear fruit in old age” (PSALM 92:12–14).

What fruit is that? No matter our circumstances or season of life, we can be examples of His love through the life we lead and the words we say. There is joy in knowing and living for the Lord and telling others about Him. ALYSON KIEDA

마지막 한 마디

어느 날 한 대학의 철학 강의 시간에 어떤 학생이 교수의 견해에 대해 분노를 일으키는 발언을 했습니다. 그러나 교수는 그 학생에게 감사한 후 다른 주제로 말을 옮김으로써 많은 학생들을 놀라게 했습니다. 나중에 왜 그 학생에게 대응하지 않았냐고 물었을 때, 그는 “나는 언쟁에서 마지막 한 마디를 해 이기려는 마음을 버리는 훈련을 하고 있습니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

하나님을 사랑하고 영화롭게 한 그 교수는 겸손한 마음을 구체적으로 나타내어 그 사랑을 보여주고 싶었던 것입니다. 그의 말은 나에게 또 다른 선생님을 생각나게 해줍니다. 그 사람은 오래 전에 전도서를 쓴 사람입니다. 그는 비록 화내는 사람을 다루는 것에 대해서는 말해주고 있지 않지만, 우리가 주님께 나아갈 때 함부로 입을 열지 말며 급한 마음으로 말을 내지 말고, 우리의 발을 삼가며 “가까이 하여 말씀을 들어야” 한다고 말했습니다. 그렇게 함으로써 우리는 하나님이 주님이시고 우리는 그분이 만드신 피조물이라는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다 (전도서 5:1-2).

당신은 어떻게 하나님께 다가가십니까? 만약 당신의 태도를 약간 고쳐야겠다는 생각이 든다면, 주님의 주권과 위대하심을 잠시나마 깊이 생각해보시지 않겠습니까? 우리가 한없는 주님의 지혜와 권능, 임재하심을 깊이 생각할 때, 우리를 향하신 하나님의 넘치는 사랑을 알아 하나님을 경외할 수 있습니다. 이런 겸손한 자세를 지니면 우리 또한 마지막 한 마디를 하여 이기려 하지 않게 됩니다.

The Last Word

One day during a university philosophy class, a student made some inflammatory remarks about the professor’s views. To the surprise of the other students, the teacher thanked him and moved on to another comment. When he was asked later why he didn’t respond to the student, he said, “I’m practicing the discipline of not having to have the last word.”

This teacher loved and honored God, and he wanted to embody a humble spirit as he reflected this love. His words remind me of another Teacher—this one from long ago, who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. Although not addressing how to handle an angry person, he said that when we approach the Lord we should guard our steps and “go near to listen” rather than being quick with our mouths and hasty in our hearts. By doing so we acknowledge that God is the Lord and we are those whom He has created (ECCLESIASTES 5:1–2).

How do you approach God? If you sense that your attitude could use some adjustment, why not spend some time considering the majesty and greatness of the Lord? When we ponder His unending wisdom, power, and presence, we can feel awed by His overflowing love for us. With this posture of humility, we too need not have the last word. AMY BOUCHER PYE

거룩, 거룩, 거룩

“재미있을 때에는 시간 가는 줄 모릅니다.” 이 진부한 표현은 사실상 증명하기 어려우나 경험에 의하면 맞는 듯합니다. 삶이 즐거울 때면 시간이 너무 빨리 지나갑니다. 내가 좋아하는 일을 하거나, 좋아하는 사람과 함께 할 때면 시간은 상관없는 것 같이 되어버립니다.

이런 “현실”을 경험한 나는 요한계시록 4장에 묘사되어 있는 장면을 새롭게 이해하게 되었습니다. 전에는, 같은 몇 마디 말을 계속 되풀이하면서 하나님의 보좌 옆에 앉아 있는 네 생물을 생각할 때 ‘얼마나 지루한 존재들인가!’ 하고 생각했습니다.

이제는 더 이상 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다. 나는 그 생물들의 많은 눈으로 계속 보아온 장면들에 대해 생각해봅니다 (8절). 하나님의 보좌 주위에 있는 그들의 위치에서 보는 광경도 생각합니다(6절). 나는 다루기 힘든 지구인들을 하나님께서 그분의 지혜와 사랑으로 품으시는 것을 보고 그들이 얼마나 놀라워할까 생각합니다. 그러고 나서 이보다 더 나은 반응이 있을 수 있을까 라고 생각합니다. 과연 “거룩, 거룩, 거룩”보다 더 나은 말이 있을 수 있을까요?

계속 같은 말을 반복하는 것이 지루할까요? 당신이 사랑하는 사람과 함께 할 때는 그렇지 않습니다. 그리고 당신이 창조된 뜻대로 정확하게 행할 때도 그렇지 않습니다.

네 생물처럼 우리는 하나님께 영광을 돌리기 위해 창조되었습니다. 우리가 주님께 우리의 관심을 집중하고 그 목적을 이루어나갈 때, 우리의 삶은 결코 지루하지 않을 것입니다.

Holy, Holy, Holy

“Time flies when you’re having fun.” This cliché has no basis in fact, but experience makes it seem true.

When life is pleasant, time passes all too quickly. Give me a task that I enjoy, or a person whose company I love, and time seems irrelevant.

My experience of this “reality” has given me a new understanding of the scene described in Revelation 4. In the past, when I considered the four living creatures seated around God’s throne who keep repeating the same few words, I thought, What a boring existence!

I don’t think that anymore. I think about the scenes they have witnessed with their many eyes (V 8). I consider the view they have from their position around God’s throne (V 6). I think of how amazed they are at God’s wise and loving involvement with wayward earthlings. Then I think, What better response could there be? What else is there to say but, “Holy, holy, holy”?

Is it boring to say the same words over and over? Not when you’re in the presence of the one you love. Not when you’re doing exactly what you were designed to do.

Like the four creatures, we were designed to glorify God. Our lives will never be boring if we’re focusing our attention on Him and fulfilling that purpose. JULIE ACKERMAN LINK

진정한 소망

얼마 전에 친구와 함께 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩을 방문하였을 때 단지 한 블록만큼과 모퉁이 주위의 사람들 밖에 보이지 않아서 기다리는 줄이 짧아보였습니다. 하지만 우리가 빌딩에 들어섰을 때 사람들의 줄은 로비를 지나서 위층으로 향하는 계단을 올라가 다른 방으로 뻗어 있었습니다. 매번 방향을 새로 틀 때마다 가야 할 길은 더 멀어 보였습니다.

관광지와 놀이공원에서는 사람들의 줄을 주의 깊게 조정하여 줄이 더 짧아 보이도록 만듭니다. 하지만 “모퉁이만 돌아가면” 또 실망이 숨어 기다리고 있습니다.

때때로 우리는 살면서 훨씬 더 심각한 실망들을 겪기도 합니다. 우리가 바라던 직장은 계획대로 되지 않고, 믿었던 친구들이 우리를 실망시키며, 잘 되기를 바랐던 연인 관계도 깨어져 버립니다. 그러나 이런 마음의 고통 가운데서 성경은 하나님 안에 있는 우리의 소망에 관한 신선한 진리를 말해줍니다. 바울 사도는 이렇게 기록하였습니다. “환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다 소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 [혹은 실망시키지] 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이니”(로마서 5:3-5).

우리가 하나님을 신뢰할 때, 하나님은 성령을 통해 우리 앞에 어떤 장애물이 있든 상관없이 우리가 무조건적으로 사랑 받고 또 언젠가 하나님과 함께 있을 것이라는 진실을 속삭여주십니다. 자주 우리를 실망시키는 이 세상에서 하나님께서 참된 소망을 주신다는 것을 알게 되어 얼마나 좋은지요.

True Hope

Not long ago I visited the Empire State Building with a friend. The line looked short—just down the block and around the corner. Yet as we entered the building, we discovered the line of people stretching through the lobby, up the stairs, and into another room. Every new turn revealed more distance to go.

Attractions and theme parks carefully route their crowds to make the lines seem shorter. Yet disappointment can lurk “just around the bend.”

Sometimes life’s disappointments are much more severe. The job we hoped for doesn’t materialize; friends we counted on let us down; the romantic relationship we longed for fails to work out. But into these heartbreaks, God’s Word speaks a refreshing truth about our hope in Him. The apostle Paul wrote, “Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame [or disappoint us], because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (ROMANS 5:3–5).

As we place our trust in Him, through His Spirit, God whispers the truth that we are unconditionally loved and will one day be with Him—regardless of the obstacles we face. In a world that may often disappoint us, how good it is to know that God gives genuine hope. JAMES BANKS
