알고 사랑하는

“날 사랑하심 성경에 써 있네”는 그리스도인들, 특히 어린아이들이 가장 오랫동안 애창해 온 찬송가 중 하나에 나오는 가사입니다. 1800년대에 애나 비 워너가 쓴 이 가사는 우리와 하나님과의 관계는 우리가 사랑을 받는 관계인 것을 부드럽게 확인시켜 줍니다.

누군가 내 아내에게 우리 가정을 위해 장식판을 주었는데, 거기에는 이 단순한 가사의 앞뒤를 뒤집어서 새로운 의미로 바꾸어놓은 글이 있었습니다. “예수님이 나를 아심 내가 사랑하네.” 이것은 주님과 우리의 관계를 다른 각도에서 볼 수 있게 해줍니다. 예수님이 우리를 알고 계신다는 것입니다.

고대 이스라엘에서는 양을 사랑하고 아는 것으로 진짜 목자인지 고용된 일꾼인지 가려낼 수 있었습니다. 목자는 그의 양들과 꽤 많은 시간을 보내기 때문에 지속적으로 돌보아주는 방법을 개발하기도 하고 자기 양에 대해 아주 잘 알았습니다. 그 당시 예수님이 그의 제자들에게 “나는 선한 목자라 나는 내 양을 알고 내 양도 나를 아는 것이......내 양은 내 음성을 들으며 나는 그들을 알며 그들은 나를 따르느니라”(요한복음 10:14,27)라고 말씀하신 것도 별로 놀라운 일이 아닙니다.

주님이 우리를 알고 우리를 사랑하십니다! 하나님 아버지께서 “[우리가] 구하기 전에 [우리에게] 있어야 할 것을 아시기”(마태복음 6:8) 때문에, 우리는 우리를 위한 예수님의 뜻을 신뢰할 수 있고 돌보아주시겠다는 주님의 약속 가운데서 안식할 수 있습니다. 오늘 삶에서 많은 부침을 겪고 있겠지만 그 가운데에서 안식하십시오. 당신 마음의 목자께서 당신을 알고 사랑하고 계십니다.

Knowing and Loving

“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so” is the message of one of Christian music’s most enduring songs, particularly for children. Written by Anna B. Warner in the 1800s, this lyric tenderly affirms our relationship with Him—we are loved.

Someone gave my wife a plaque for our home that gives these words a fresh twist by flipping that simple idea. It reads, “Jesus knows me, this I love .” This provides a different perspective on our relationship with Him—we are known.

In ancient Israel, loving and knowing the sheep distinguished a true shepherd from a hired hand. The shepherd spent so much time with his sheep that he developed an abiding care for and a deep knowledge of his lambs. Little wonder then that Jesus tells His own, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. . . . My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (JOHN 10:14, 27).

He knows us and He loves us! We can trust Jesus’s purposes for us and rest in the promise of His care because His Father “knows what [we] need before [we] ask him” (MATTHEW 6:8). As you deal with the ups and downs of life today, be at rest. You are known and loved by the Shepherd of your heart. BILL CROWDER

화내시는 하나님?

대학에서 그리스 로마 신화를 공부할 때, 이야기 속에서 신화 속의 신들이 얼마나 변덕스럽고 쉽게 화를 내는지 너무 놀랐습니다. 때로는 그 신들은 그들의 화를 받는 희생자인 인간들의 삶을 충동적으로 망가뜨려 버렸습니다.

나는 도대체 어떻게 사람들이 그런 신들을 믿을 수 있을까 생각하며 비웃었습니다. 그렇지만 나는 ‘실제로 살아계신 하나님에 대한 나의 생각은 얼마나 다를까? 나도 의심이 들 때마다 주님을 쉽게 화를 내시는 분으로 생각하고 있지는 않은가?’라고 스스로 물어보게 되었습니다. 애석하게도, 나의 답은 그렇다는 것이었습니다.

그래서 나는 모세가 “하나님의 영광을 보여 달라”(출애굽기 33:18)고 간구한 것에 고마움을 느낍니다. 걸핏하면 자신에게 대드는 그 많은 사람들을 인도하도록 부름을 받은 모세는 하나님께서 진실로 이 위대한 과업을 도와주실 것인지 알고 싶었습니다. 하나님은 그분의 영광을 보여주심으로써 모세의 간구에 답해주셨습니다. 하나님은 모세에게 그분의 이름과 성품을 알려주셨습니다. 그분은 “자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디 하고 인자와 진실이 많은”(34:6) 하나님이십니다.

이 구절은 하나님은 충동적이고 갑자기 화를 내시는 분이 아니라는 것을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 특히 내가 화가 나거나 조급해서 하나님을 몰아부쳤을 때를 생각하니, 이 사실이 나를 안심시켜 줍니다. 또한 주님은 계속해서 내가 그분을 더욱 닮아가도록 일하고 계십니다.

우리를 향해 오래 참으시는 그분의 모습에서, 친구가 해주는 격려의 말에서, 아름다운 석양에서, 무엇보다도 우리 안에 계시는 성령님의 속삭임에서 우리는 하나님과 그분의 영광을 볼 수 있습니다.

An Angry God?

When I studied Greek and Roman mythology in college, I was struck by how moody and easily angered the mythological gods were in the stories. The people on the receiving end of their anger found their lives destroyed, sometimes on a whim.

I was quick to scoff, wondering how anyone could believe in gods like that. But then I asked myself, Is my view of the God who actually exists much different? Don’t I view Him as easily angered whenever I doubt Him? Sadly, yes.

That’s why I appreciate Moses’s request of God to “show me your glory” (EXODUS 33:18). Having been chosen to lead a large group of people who often grumbled against him, Moses wanted to know that God would indeed help him with this great task. Moses’s request was rewarded by a demonstration of God’s glory. God announced to Moses His name and characteristics. He is “the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (34:6).

This verse reminded me that God is not impulsive, suddenly striking out in anger. That’s reassuring, especially when I con-
sider the times I’ve lashed out at Him in anger or impatience. Also, He continually works to make me more like Himself.

We can see God and His glory in His patience with us, the encouraging word of a friend, a beautiful sunset, or—best of all—the whisper of the Holy Spirit inside of us. LINDA WASHINGTON

어울림

리는 부지런하고 믿을 만한 은행원입니다. 하지만, 자신의 믿음의 삶을 살기 위해 자주 눈에 띄는 행동을 하는 자신을 발견하곤 합니다. 그것은 쉬는 시간 휴게실에서 부적절한 대화들이 오고갈 때 그 자리를 뜨는 것과 같은 구체화된 행동으로 나타납니다. 성경공부시간에 그는 친구들에게 “내가 사람들과 잘 어울리지 않아서 승진 기회를 놓칠까 두려워.”라고 말했습니다.

말라기 선지자의 시대에도 믿는 사람들은 비슷한 어려움에 직면했습니다. 그들은 유배생활에서 돌아와 성전을 재건했지만, 그들의 미래에 대한 하나님의 계획에 회의적이었습니다. 어떤 이스라엘 사람들은 이렇게 말했습니다. “하나님을 섬기는 것이 헛되니 만군의 여호와 앞에서 그 명령을 지키며 슬프게 행하는 것이 무엇이 유익하리요 지금 우리는 교만한 자가 복되다 하며 악을 행하는 자가 번성하며 하나님을 시험하는 자가 화를 면한다 하노라”(말라기 3:14-15).

남들과 잘 어울리지 않으면 손해를 볼 것이라고 말하는 문화에서 어떻게 우리가 하나님을 위해 굳건하게 설 수 있을까요? 말라기 시대에 살았던 신실한 사람들은 그들과 같은 생각을 가진 다른 믿는 자들과 만나 서로를 격려하며 그 난관에 대응했습니다. 그리고 말라기는 “여호와께서 분명히 들으셨다”(16절)라는 중요한 정보를 우리에게 전해줍니다.

하나님은 그분을 경외하는 사람들을 아시고 돌보십니다. 그분은 우리에게 “어울리라”고 하지 않으시고 우리가 서로 격려하며 그분께 매일 더 가까워지라고 하십니다. 계속 충성합시다!

Fitting In

Lee is a diligent and reliable bank employee. Yet he often finds himself sticking out like a sore thumb for living out his faith. This reveals itself in practical ways, such as when he leaves the break room during an inappropriate conversation. At a Bible study, he shared with his friends, “I fear that I’m losing promotion opportunities for not fitting in.”

Believers during the prophet Malachi’s time faced a similar challenge. They had returned from exile and the temple had been rebuilt, but there was skepticism about God’s plan for their future. Some of the Israelites were saying, “It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements . . . ? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it” (MALACHI 3:14–15).

How can we stand firm for God in a culture that tells us we will lose out if we don’t blend in? The faithful in Malachi’s time responded to that challenge by meeting with like-minded believers to encourage each other. Malachi shares this important detail with us: “The LORD listened and heard” (V 16).

God notices and cares for all who fear and honor Him. He doesn’t call us to “fit in” but to draw closer to Him each day as we encourage each other. Let’s stay faithful! POH FANG CHIA

안에 무엇이 있나요?

“안에 뭐가 있는지 보고 싶어?”라고 내 친구가 물었습니다. 내 친구의 딸이 그 작은 팔로 안고 있는 옛날식 헝겊 인형을 보고 내가 막 찬사를 늘어놓았을 때였습니다. 바로 궁금해져서, 나는 안에 무엇이 들어있는지 정말 보고 싶다고 대답했습니다. 친구는 그 인형을 엎어놓고 등에 있는 지퍼를 조심스레 내렸습니다. 에밀리는 천으로 된 인형 몸 안에서 보물 하나를 조용히 꺼냈는데. 그것은 20년도 더 지난 그녀 자신의 어린 시절에 그녀가 간직하고 사랑했던 헝겊 인형이었습니다. “바깥의” 인형은 그 안에서 힘을 주고 형태를 만들어주는 이 속 알맹이를 빼내자 단지 껍질에 불과했습니다.

바울은 예수님의 삶과 죽음, 부활의 진리를 하나님의 백성들이 그들의 연약한 몸 안에 지니고 다니는 보화로 묘사합니다. 그 보화는 주님을 믿는 자들로 하여금 상상도 할 수 없는 역경을 견뎌내게 하고 주님을 계속 섬길 수 있게 합니다. 그들이 그렇게 할 때, 주님의 빛, 즉 주님의 삶이 그들 인간성의 “갈라진 틈”을 통해 밝게 빛을 발합니다. 바울은 우리가 주님의 일을 할 수 있도록 하나님이 힘을 주시기 때문에 “낙심하지” 말라고 우리 모두에게 권면합니다(고린도후서 4:16).

“속 알맹이” 인형처럼, 우리 안에 있는 보물인 복음이 우리의 삶에 목적과 용기를 줍니다. 우리를 통하여 하나님의 능력이 빛이 날 때, 다른 사람들이 “당신 안에 뭐가 있나요?”라고 물을 것입니다. 그때 우리는 우리 마음의 지퍼를 열어 그리스도 안에 있는 생명을 주는 구원의 약속을 보여줄 수 있습니다.

What’s Inside?

“Do you want to see what’s inside?” my friend asked. I had just complimented her on the old-fashioned rag doll her daughter held in her small arms. Instantly curious, I replied that yes, I very much wanted to see what was inside. She turned the doll face down and pulled open a discreet zipper sewn into its back. From within the cloth body, Emily gently removed a treasure: the rag doll she’d held and loved throughout the years of her own childhood more than two decades prior. The “outer” doll was merely a shell without this inner core to give it strength and form.

Paul describes the truth of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection as a treasure, carried about in the frail humanity of God’s people. That treasure enables those who trust in Him to bear up under unthinkable adversity and continue in their service. When they do, His light—His life—shines brightly through the “cracks” of their humanness. Paul encourages us all not to “lose heart” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16) because God strengthens us to do His work.

Like the “inner” doll, the gospel-treasure within us lends both purpose and fortitude to our lives. When God’s strength shines through us, it invites others to ask, “What’s inside?” We can then unzip our hearts and reveal the life-giving promise of salvation in Christ. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

종의 마음을 닮아가기

직장에서 피곤한 하루를 보냈습니다. 하지만 집에 돌아와서는 나의 “다른” 일, 즉 좋은 아빠가 되는 일을 시작해야 합니다. 아내와 아이들이 내게 인사하자마자 곧 “아빠, 저녁 때 뭐 먹어요?”, “아빠, 물 좀 갖다 주실래요?”, “아빠, 같이 축구할래요?”가 뒤따라옵니다.

나는 그냥 좀 앉아있고 싶었습니다. 물론 좋은 아빠가 되고 싶은 마음도 있었지만 가족의 필요만 들어주는 봉사는 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그때 아내가 교회의 누군가로부터 받은 감사카드를 보게 되었습니다. 그 카드에는 물이 담긴 그릇과 수건, 그리고 더러운 신발이 그려져 있었습니다. 아래쪽에는 “나는 섬기는 자로 너희 중에 있느니라”라는 누가복음 22장 27절 말씀이 적혀있었습니다.

예수님이 오셔서 찾으시고 구원하신 그 사람들을 섬기는 것이 예수님의 사역이라고 한 그 말이(누가복음 19:10) ‘정확히’ 내게 필요한 말이었습니다. 예수님께서 아주 지저분한 제자들의 발을 닦아주신 일 같은 더러운 일을 기꺼이 하셨다면, 나도 불평하지 않고 내 아들에게 물을 가져다 줄 수 있어야 했습니다(요한복음 13:1-17). 그 순간 나는 가족의 부탁을 들어주는 일이 마지못해 하는 ‘의무’가 아니라, 예수님이 보여주신 종의 마음과 그분의 사랑을 내 가족들에게 보일 수 있는 ‘기회’라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 우리가 어떤 부탁을 받을 때, 그때가 바로 목숨을 버리시기까지 제자들을 섬기신 그분과 같이 되는 기회인 것입니다.

우리가 받은 하나님의 사랑은 다른 사람을 섬길 수 있는 힘을 준다.

Growing a Servant’s Heart

It was a long day at work. But when I got home, it was time to start my “other” job : being a good dad. Greetings from my wife and kids soon became, “Dad, what’s for dinner?” “Dad, can you get me some water?” “Dad, can we play soccer?”

I just wanted to sit down. And even though part of me really wanted to be a good dad, I didn’t feel like serving my family’s needs. That’s when I saw it: a thank-you card my wife had received from someone at church. It pictured a bowl of water, a towel, and dirty sandals. Across the bottom were these words from Luke 22:27: “I am among you as one who serves.”

That statement of Jesus’s mission, to serve those He came to seek and save (LUKE 19:10), was exactly what I needed. If Jesus was willing to do the dirtiest of jobs for His followers—like scrubbing His followers’ no doubt filthy feet (JOHN 13:1–17)—I could get my son a cup of water without grumbling about it. In that moment, I was reminded that my family’s requests to serve them weren’t merely an obligation, but an opportunity to reflect Jesus’s servant heart and His love to them. When requests are made of us, they are chances to become more like the One who served His followers by laying down His life for us. ADAM HOLZ

기념비

어떤 날에는 아침에 인터넷에 접속할 때 페이스북이 지난해 같은 날에 올린 “추억들”을 보여줍니다. 동생의 결혼식 사진이나 우리 딸이 할머니와 놀고 있는 비디오 같은 추억들은 늘 나를 미소 짓게 합니다. 하지만 때로는 그것들로 인해 감정적으로 깊은 영향을 받기도 합니다. 형부가 화학요법으로 항암 치료를 받을 때 병원을 방문했던 내용의 글이나, 3년 전에 뇌수술을 받으신 어머니의 머리에 철 핀이 박혀 있는 사진을 볼 때면, 힘든 상황 중에 하나님께서 신실하게 함께 하셨던 것을 기억하게 됩니다. 이 같은 페이스북의 추억들로 인해 나는 기도와 감사를 드리게 됩니다.

우리는 모두 하나님께서 우리를 위해 하신 일들을 쉽게 잊어버리는 경향이 있습니다. 그래서 우리에게는 기억나게 해주는 기념물들이 필요합니다. 여호수아가 하나님의 백성을 이끌고 새 땅을 향해 갈 때 그들은 요단강을 건너야 했습니다(여호수아 3:15-16). 하나님께서 강물을 둘로 나누셨고 백성들은 마른 땅을 건넜습니다 (17절). 이 기적을 기념하기 위해 그들은 강바닥에서 돌 열두 개를 가져다가 다른 쪽에 쌓았습니다(4:3,6-7). 그 돌이 무엇을 의미하는지 누가 물으면 하나님의 백성들은 그날 하나님이 행하셨던 일을 그들에게 이야기해주었습니다.

이전에 역사하신 하나님의 신실하심을 기억나게 해주는 실제적인 기념물들은 우리가 현재에도, 그리고 미래에도 계속 하나님을 신뢰해야 한다는 것을 기억나게 해줄 것입니다.

Stones of Remembrance

Some mornings when I go online, Facebook shows me “memories”—things I’ve posted on that day in previous years. These memories, such as photos from my brother’s wedding or a video of my daughter playing with my grandmother, usually make me smile. But sometimes they have a more profound emotional effect. When I see a note about a visit to my brother-in-law during his chemotherapy or a picture of the staples across my mother’s scalp after her brain surgery three years ago, I am reminded of God’s faithful presence during difficult circumstances. These Facebook memories nudge me towards prayer and gratitude.

All of us are prone to forget the things God has done for us. We need reminders. When Joshua led God’s people towards their new home, they had to cross the Jordan River (JOSHUA 3:15–16). God parted the waters, and His people walked through on dry land (V 17). To create a memorial of this miracle, they took twelve stones from the middle of the riverbed and stacked them on the other side (4:3, 6–7). When others asked what the stones meant, God’s people would tell the story of what God had done that day.

Physical reminders of God’s faithfulness in the past can remind us to trust Him in the present—and with the future. AMY PETERSON

빚을 탕감해주시는 분

나는 병원비 청구서를 검토하다가 눈물이 핑 돌았습니다. 남편의 장기간에 걸친 실직으로 수입이 크게 줄어든 것을 고려할 때, 병원비의 절반만 갚으려고 해도 매달 적은 액수로 분할하여 몇 년 동안 갚아야 했습니다. 나는 먼저 기도를 드리고 병원에 전화해서 우리의 상황을 설명하고 분할지급 방법에 대해 문의했습니다.

병원 접수담당자는 나에게 잠시 기다리라고 하더니, 의사가 병원비 잔고를 모두 없애주었다고 알려주었습니다.

고마움의 눈물이 흘렀습니다. 크나큰 선물로 인해 감사가 넘쳤습니다. 나는 전화를 끊고 나서 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 병원 부채가 없어진 이 일을 나는 빚을 졌던 일로 기억하지 않고 하나님께서 역사하셨던 일로 기억하게 되었습니다.

빚을 탕감해준 의사의 선택은 나에게 감당할 수 없는 내 죄를 용서해주신 하나님의 선택을 생각나게 해주었습니다. 성경말씀은 우리에게 하나님은 “긍휼이 많으시고 은혜로우시며 인자하심이 풍부하신”(시편 103:8) 분이라는 것을 확증해줍니다. 하나님은 “우리의 죄를 따라 우리를 처벌하지 아니하십니다”(10절). 우리가 회개하고 그리스도를 우리의 구주로 영접할 때, 하나님은 “동이 서에서 먼 것 같이”(12절) 우리의 죄과를 멀리 옮기십니다. 주님의 희생은 한때 우리가 가졌던 빚을 완전히 없애주십니다.

한번 용서를 받으면 우리는 더 이상 과거의 빚으로 인해 묶이거나 제한받지 않게 되고, 주님의 놀라운 선물에 대한 반응으로 우리는 주님이 행하신 모든 것을 인정하게 됩니다. 온전히 예배하며 우리의 사랑을 주님께 드림으로 우리는 주님을 위해 살며 다른 이들에게 주님을 증거 할 수 있습니다.

The Debt Eraser

I blinked back tears as I reviewed my medical bill. Considering my husband’s severe cut in salary after a lengthy unemployment, even paying half of the balance would require years of small monthly installments. I prayed before calling the doctor’s office to explain our situation and request a payment plan.

After leaving me on hold for a short time, the receptionist informed me the doctor had zeroed out our account.

I sobbed a thank you. The generous gift overwhelmed me with gratitude. Hanging up the phone, I praised God. I considered saving the bill, not as a reminder of what I used to owe but as a reminder of what God had done.

My physician’s choice to pardon my debt brought to mind God’s choice to forgive the insurmountable debt of my sins. Scripture assures us God is “compassionate and gracious” and “abounding in love” (PSALM 103:8). He “does not treat us as our sins deserve” (V 10). He removes our sins “as far as the east is from the west” (V 12), when we repent and accept Christ as our Savior. His sacrifice erases the debt we once owed. Completely.

Once forgiven, we aren’t defined by or limited by our past debt. In response to the Lord’s extravagant gift, we can acknowledge all He’s done. Offering our devoted worship and grateful affection, we can live for Him and share Him with others. XOCHITL DIXON

클레오파트라, 갈릴레오, 셰익스피어, 엘비스, 펠레. 이들은 너무 잘 알려져 있어서 이름만 대면 그들이 누군지 바로 알 수 있습니다. 그들은 어떤 사람들이었고 무엇을 했는지 기록되어 역사에 중요한 인물로 남아있습니다. 하지만 이들, 그리고 그 어떤 이름보다도 훨씬 더 높은 다른 이름이 있습니다!

하나님의 아들이 이 세상에 태어나기 전, 천사는 마리아와 요셉에게 아이의 이름을 ‘예수’로 지으라고 했습니다. 이는 “그가 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원할 자” (마태복음 1:21)이시며, “그가......지극히 높으신 이의 아들이라 일컬어질 것”(누가복음 1:32) 이기 때문이었습니다. 예수님은 유명인으로 오신 것이 아니라 자기를 낮추셔서 십자가에서 죽으실 종으로 오셨습니다. 그러므로 누구든지 주님을 영접하면 용서를 받고 죄의 권세에서 자유로워질 수 있습니다.

바울 사도는 이렇게 기록했습니다. “하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사 하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고 모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라”(빌립보서 2:9-11).

가장 기쁠 때, 그리고 매우 궁핍할 때, 우리가 붙들어야 할 이름은 바로 ‘예수’입니다. 주님은 우리를 결코 버려두지 않으십니다. 그리고 주님의 사랑은 영원합니다.

One Name

Cleopatra, Galileo, Shakespeare, Elvis, Pelé. They are all so well known that they need only one name to be recognized. They have remained prominent in history because of who they were and what they did. But there is another name that stands far above these or any other name!

Before the Son of God was born into this world, the angel told Mary and Joseph to name Him Jesus because “he will save his people from their sins” (MATTHEW 1:21), and “he . . . will be called the Son of the Most High” (LUKE 1:32). Jesus didn’t come as a celebrity but as a servant who humbled Himself and died on the cross so that anyone who receives Him can be forgiven and freed from the power of sin.

The apostle Paul wrote, “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (PHILIPPIANS 2:9–11).

In our times of greatest joy and our deepest need, the name we cling to is Jesus . He will never leave us, and His love will not fail. DAVID C. MCCASLAND

동방박사의 선물

한 젊은 부부는 부유하지 못했지만 서로 많이 사랑했습니다. 크리스마스가 다가오자 두 사람은 서로가 얼마나 아끼는지를 보여줄 수 있는 선물을 찾느라 고심했습니다. 결국 델라는 크리스마스이브에 자신의 무릎까지 오는 긴 머리카락을 팔아서 할아버지와 아버지로부터 물려받은 짐의 시계에 연결할 백금 시계 줄을 샀습니다. 하지만 짐은 델라의 머리카락을 위해 비싼 머리빗 세트를 사느라 그 시계를 팔고 말았습니다.

작가 오 헨리는 이 부부의 이야기를 ‘동방박사의 선물’이라고 불렀습니다. 이 작품에서 그는 비록 그들의 선물이 쓸모없게 되고 크리스마스 아침에 어리석게 보이게 했을지 몰라도, 그들의 사랑이 그들을 선물을 주고받는 사람들 중 가장 지혜로운 자들로 만들어주었음을 보여주었습니다.

The Gift of the Magi

A young married couple had more love than money. As Christmas neared, both struggled to find a gift that would show how much they cared for the other. Finally, on Christmas Eve, Della sold her long, knee-length hair to buy Jim a platinum chain for the watch he’d inherited from his father and grandfather. Jim, however, had just sold the watch to buy a set of expensive combs for Della’s hair.

Author O. Henry called the couple’s story The Gift of the Magi. His creation suggests that even though their gifts became useless and may have caused them to look foolish on Christmas morning, their love made them among the wisest of those who give gifts.

The wise men of the first Christmas story also could have looked foolish to some as they arrived in Bethlehem with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (MATTHEW 2:11). They weren’t Jewish. They were outsiders, Gentiles, who didn’t realize how much they would disturb the peace of Jerusalem by asking about a newly born king of the Jews (V 2).

As with Jim and Della’s experience, the magi’s plans didn’t turn out the way they expected. But they gave what money can-
not buy. They came with gifts, but then bowed to worship One who would ultimately make the greatest of all loving sacrifices for them—and for us. MART DEHAAN

우리 아버지처럼

먼지가 앉은 채로 내 서재 바닥에 놓여있는 뒷굽이 있는 아버지의 카우보이 부츠는 아버지가 어떤 분이셨는지를 매일 생각나게 해줍니다.

아버지가 하신 여러 가지 일 중에는 소떼를 모는 전광석화와 같이 빠른 말을 키우고 훈련시키는 일이 있었습니다. 나는 말을 타고 계신 아버지의 모습에 감탄하며 아버지가 일하시는 모습을 지켜보기를 좋아했습니다. 어린아이였던 나는 나중에 커서 아버지처럼 되고 싶었습니다. 이제 내 나이가 80대가 되었지만, 아버지의 부츠는 아직도 내 발에는 너무 큽니다.

아버지는 지금 천국에 계시지만, 내겐 닮고 싶은 또 다른 아버지가 있습니다. 나는 선함으로 가득하고, 사랑의 향기가 나는 그분을 꼭 닮고 싶습니다. 그러기에는 내가 너무 부족하여 이생에서는 결코 그렇게 될 수 없을 것입니다. 내가 채우기에는 그분의 부츠가 너무 큽니다.

그러나 베드로 사도는 이렇게 말했습니다. “모든 은혜의 하나님 곧 그리스도 안에서 너희를 부르사 자기의 영원한 영광에 들어가게 하신 이가 친히 온전하게 하시며 굳건하게 하시며 강하게 하시며 터를 견고하게 하시리라”(베드로전서 5:10). 우리가 아는 것처럼 그분은 그 일을 하실 수 있는 지혜와 권능을 갖고 계십니다(11절).

우리는 언젠가는 하나님 아버지를 닮게 될 것입니다. 하나님은 그분의 아름다운 성품을 나누어주시려고 우리를 부르셨습니다. 우리가 이 세상에서는 하나님을 조금밖에 닮지 못하겠지만, 천국에서는 우리의 죄와 슬픔이 없어지고 하나님을 온전히 닮을 수 있게 될 것입니다! 이것이 “하나님의 참된 은혜”입니다(12절).

Just Like My Father

My father’s dusty, heeled-over, cowboy boots rest on the floor of my study, daily reminders of the kind of man he was.

Among other things, he raised and trained cutting horses—equine athletes that move like quicksilver. I loved to watch him at work, marveling that he could stay astride.

As a boy, growing up, I wanted to be just like him. I’m in my eighties, and his boots are still too large for me to fill.

My father’s in heaven now, but I have another Father to emulate. I want to be just like Him—filled with His goodness, fragrant with His love. I’m not there and never will be in this life; His boots are much too large for me to fill.

But the apostle Peter said this: “The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ . . . will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (1 PETER 5:10). He has the wisdom and power to do that, you know (V 11).

Our lack of likeness to our heavenly Father will not last forever. God has called us to share the beauty of character that is His. In this life we reflect Him poorly, but in heaven our sin and sorrow will be no more and we’ll reflect Him more fully! This is the “true grace of God” (V 12). DAVID H. ROPER
