먼저 해야 할 일을 먼저

비행기에 타면 이륙하기 전에 항공사 승무원이 기내에 기압이 떨어질 경우에 대비한 안전수칙을 설명해줍니다. 승객들은 천장에서 산소마스크가 떨어져 내려오면 다른 사람을 돕기 전에 자신이 먼저 착용해야 한다는 설명을 듣습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 왜냐하면 다른 사람을 돕기 전에 자신이 먼저 신체적으로 건강해야 하기 때문입니다.

바울은 디모데에게 보낸 서신에서 다른 사람을 돕고 섬기기 전에 먼저 자신의 영적인 건강을 유지하는 것이 중요하다고 강조했습니다. 그는 디모데에게 거짓 교훈에 맞서고(디모데전서 4:1-5), 잘못된 가르침을 바로잡는 등(6-8절), 목회자로서의 많은 책임을 상기시켰습니다. 그러나 그가 맡은 일을 수행하기 전에 가장 중요한 것은 “[그] 자신과 가르침을 살펴 이 일을 계속하는”(16절) 것이었습니다. 그는 다른 사람들을 보살피기 전에 자신과 주님의 관계를 먼저 확실히 해야 할 필요가 있었습니다.

바울이 디모데에게 당부한 말은 우리에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 우리는 매일 주님을 모르는 사람들과 만납니다. 우리가 먼저 하나님의 말씀과 기도와 성령님의 능력으로 영적인 산소가 충만하게 될 때 하나님과의 관계를 올바르게 유지할 수 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 영적으로 건강하게 되어 다른 사람들을 도울 수 있습니다.

First Things First

When you travel by air, before the flight takes off an airline employee presents a safety briefing, which explains what to do if there is a loss of cabin pressure. Passengers are told that oxygen masks will drop from the compartment above and they are to put one on themselves before helping others. Why? Because before you can help anyone else, you need to be physically alert yourself.

When Paul wrote to Timothy, he stressed the importance of maintaining his own spiritual health before helping and serving others. He reminded Timothy of his many responsibilities as a pastor: There were false teachings to contend with (1 TIM 4:1–5) and wrong doctrines to correct (VV 6–8). But to discharge his duties well, what was most important was to “watch [his] life and doctrine closely [and] persevere in them” (V 16). He needed to take care of his own relationship with the Lord first before he could attend to others.

What Paul told Timothy applies to us too. Each day we encounter people who do not know the Lord. When we tank up on our spiritual oxygen first through time in God’s Word, prayer, and the enabling of the Holy Spirit, we keep our relationship right with God. 그리 아니하실지라도 하나님을 신뢰함

1992년에 일어난 사고 때문에 나는 등과 어깨, 목의 만성적인 통증으로 고생하고 있습니다. 견디기 힘든 극심한 고통으로 절망적인 순간들을 지나는 동안에는 주님을 의지하거나 찬양하는 일이 언제나 쉽지는 않습니다. 그러나 참기 힘든 그 순간에도 하나님이 계속 나와 함께 하시는 것이 나에게 위로가 됩니다. 주님의 변함없는 선하심과 무한하신 능력, 그리고 지속적인 은혜는 나를 안심시키고 또 힘을 줍니다. 주님을 의심하려는 유혹을 받을 때 나는 사드락과 메삭, 아벳느고의 굳건한 믿음으로부터 용기를 얻습니다. 그들은 하나님을 경배하였으며 절망적으로 보이는 순간에도 하나님께서 그들과 함께 하심을 믿었습니다.

느부갓네살 왕이 이 세 사람에게 하나님을 버리고 금 신상에 절하지 않으면 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 속에 던지겠다고 협박했을 때 (다니엘 3:13-15), 그들은 용기와 자신감에 찬 믿음을 보여주었습니다. 비록 그들이 처한 현재의 곤경으로부터 하나님이 구원해주시지 않는다 할지라도(18절) 하나님은 경배를 받으시기에 합당한 분(17절)이라는 것을 그들은 조금도 의심하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 그들이 도움을 필요로 할 때 그들을 홀로 두지 않으시고 풀무불 속에서 그들과 함께 계셔서 보호하셨습니다(24-25절).

하나님은 우리도 홀로 버려두지 않으십니다. 느부갓네살의 풀무불 같은 극심한 시련 속에서도 하나님은 우리와 함께 계십니다. 우리의 고통이 이 현실에서 끝나지 않을지라도, 하나님은 현재나 미래에도 언제나 전능하시고 신실하시며 또 선하십니다. 우리는 변함없는 사랑으로 임재하시는 하나님을 의지할 수 있습니다.

Trusting God Even If

Due to an injury that occurred in 1992, I suffer from chronic pain in my upper back, shoulders, and neck. During the most excruciating and disheartening moments, it’s not always easy to trust or praise the Lord. But when my situation feels unbearable, God’s constant presence comforts me. He strengthens me and reassures me of His unchanging goodness, limitless power, and sustaining grace. And when I’m tempted to doubt my Lord, I’m encouraged by the determined faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They worshiped God and trusted He was with them, even when their situation seemed hopeless.

When King Nebuchadnezzar threatened to throw them into a blazing furnace if they didn’t turn away from the true God to worship his golden statue (DAN 3:13–15), these three men displayed courageous and confident faith. They never doubted the Lord was worthy of their worship (V 17), “even if” He didn’t rescue them from their current predicament (V 18). And God didn’t leave them alone in their time of need; He joined and protected them in the furnace (VV 24–25).

God doesn’t leave us alone either. He remains with us through trials that can feel as destructive as Nebuchadnezzar’s furnace. Even if our suffering doesn’t end on this side of eternity, God is and always will be mighty, trustworthy, and good. We can rely on His constant and loving presence. - XOCHITL DIXON

메이셀을 사랑하시는 예수님

내 여동생 메이셀은 어렸을 때 우리가 잘 아는 찬송가를 자기 식으로 고쳐 부르곤 했습니다. “예수님 날 사랑하심을 성경이 메이셀에게 말해주네.” 이렇게 부르는 것이 내 귀에 아주 거슬렸습니다. “더 현명한” 언니들 중 하나였던 나는 “메이셀에게”가 아니라 “나에게”가 맞다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 하지만 메이셀은 늘 자기 이름을 넣어 그렇게 불렀습니다.

이제 나는 내 여동생이 전적으로 옳았다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 성경은 진실로 메이셀뿐 아니라 우리 모두에게 예수님이 우리를 사랑하신다고 말하고 있습니다. 우리는 계속 반복해서 성경에서 그 사실을 볼 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, “예수께서 사랑 하시는 그 제자”(요한복음 21:7,20)라고 한 요한 사도의 기록을 보십시오. 요한은 또 성경구절중 우리가 가장 잘 알고 있는 요한복음 3장 16절 말씀으로 우리에게 하나님의 사랑을 말해줍니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게하려 하심이라.”

요한은 요한1서 4장 10절에서 다시 사랑의 말씀을 강조합니다. “사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사 우리 죄를 속하기 위하여 화목 제물로 그 아들을 보내셨음이라.” 요한이 예수님이 자기를 사랑하신다는 것을 알았던 것처럼 우리도 그와 똑같은 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리를 사랑하십니다. 성경이 그렇게 말씀하고 있습니다.

Jesus Loves Maysel

When my sister Maysel was little, she would sing a familiar song in her own way: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells Maysel.” This irritated me to no end! As one of her older, “wiser” sisters, I knew the words were “me so,” not “Maysel.” Yet she persisted in singing it her way.

Now I think my sister had it right all along. The Bible does indeed tell Maysel, and all of us, that Jesus loves us. Over and over again we read that truth. Take, for example, the writings of the apostle John, “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (JOHN 21:7, 20). He tells us about God’s love in one of the best-known verses of the Bible: John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John reinforces that message of love in 1 John 4:10: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” Just as John knew Jesus loved him, we too can have that same assurance: Jesus does love us. The Bible tells us so. - ALYSON KIEDA

맥퍼슨 아파트에서의 크리스마스

우리가 사는 맥퍼슨 가든 아파트 72단지에는 가족이나 개인들을 포함해 약 230 가구가 살고 있습니다. 사람들은 각자 살아온 자신의 삶의 이야기가 있습니다. 10층에 사는 한 할머니는 자녀들이 모두 장성하여 결혼하고 출가하여 이제 혼자 살고 있습니다. 몇 집 건너서는 남매를 키우는 젊은 부부가 살고 있고, 몇 층 아래에는 젊은 군인이 살고 있습니다. 그는 전에 교회에 나온 적이 있는데, 어쩌면 이번 크리스마스에 교회에 다시 나올지도 모릅니다. 나는 작년 크리스마스때 우리 교인들과 함께 동네를 돌아다니며 크리스마스 캐럴을 불러주면서 이들을 모두 만났었습니다.

최초의 크리스마스 때와 마찬가지로 매번 크리스마스가 와도 하나님께서 이 세상에 아기 예수로 오신 것을 모르는 사람들이 많이 있습니다(누가복음 1:68; 2:21). “온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식”(2:10)인 크리스마스의 중요성을 모르는 이들도 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 온 백성입니다! 우리의 국적이나 문화, 성별, 그리고 사는 형편에 상관없이 예수님은 우리를 위해 죽으시고 우리의 죄를 온전히 용서하심으로 다시 하나님과의 관계를 회복하고 그분의 사랑과 기쁨, 평화와 희망을 누릴 수 있게 해주셨습니다. 옆집 아주머니로부터 점심을 같이 하는 직장동료에 이르기까지 모든 사람들이 이 놀라운 소식을 들어야만 합니다!

첫 성탄절에는 천사들이 이 기쁜 소식을 전했습니다. 이제 하나님은 이 소식을 다른 사람들에게 전하기 위해 우리를 통해 일하시기를 바라십니다.

Christmas at MacPherson

About 230 families and individuals live at MacPherson Gardens, Block 72 in my neighborhood. Each person has his or her own life story. On the tenth floor resides an elderly woman whose children have grown up, gotten married, and moved out. She lives by herself now. Just a few doors away from her is a young couple with two kids—a boy and a girl. And a few floors below lives a young man serving in the army. He has been to church before; maybe he will visit again on Christmas Day. I met these people last Christmas when our church went caroling in the neighborhood to spread Christmas cheer.

Every Christmas—as on the first Christmas—there are many people who do not know that God has entered into our world as a baby whose name is Jesus (LUKE 1:68; 2:21). Or they do not know the significance of that event—it is “good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (2:10). Yes, all people! Regardless of our nationality, culture, gender, or financial status, Jesus came to die for us and offer us complete forgiveness so that we can be reconciled with Him and enjoy His love, joy, peace, and hope. All people, from the woman next door to the colleagues we have lunch with, need to hear this wonderful news!

On the first Christmas, the angels were the bearers of this joyous news. Today, God desires to work through us to take the story to others. - POH FANG CHIA

기다림

“크리스마스까지 얼마 남았어요?” 우리 아이들이 어렸을 때 되풀이해서 물었던 질문입니다. 우리는 크리스마스까지 남은 날짜를 카운트다운 해주는 재림절 달력을 사용했지만, 아이들에게는 그 기다림이 여전히 몹시 지루하게 느껴졌던 것입니다.

우리는 어린아이가 기다림을 힘들어 한다는 것은 쉽게 이해하지만, 이것이 하나님을 믿는 모든 사람들에게도 똑같은 도전이 될 수 있다는 것을 과소평가하는 것 같습니다. 예를 들어, “여호와의 능력을 의지하고 서서 그 무리를 먹일”(4절) “이스라엘을 다스릴 자”(5:2)가 베들레헴에서 나실 것이라고 약속한 선지자 미가의 메시지를 들은 사람들을 생각해보십시오. 그 사람들이 거의 7백년을 기다린 후에야 예수님께서 베들레헴에서 태어나심으로 그 예언의 앞부분이 성취 되었습니다(마태복음 2:1). 그러나 그 예언의 다른 부분은 아직 이루어지지 않았습니다. 우리는 예수님께서 재림하여 모든 하나님의 사람들이 “안전하게 살며”, 그리고 “그의 위대함이 땅 끝까지 이를”(미가 5:4, 현대인의 성경) 그때를 아직 소망 가운데 기다리고 있습니다. 그때가 되면 오랜 기다림이 끝나고 우리는 크게 기뻐할 것입니다.

우리 대부분에게 기다림은 쉽지 않지만, 기다리는 동안 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시겠다고 하신 약속을 지키시리라는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다(마태복음 28:20). 왜냐하면 예수님께서 작은 베들레헴에서 태어나셨을 때 흠이 없이 완전한 모습으로 세상에 오셨기 때문입니다 (요한복음 10:10 참조). 주님의 재림을 손꼽아 기다리는 동안 우리는 주님이 오늘 우리와 함께 하심을 즐거워할 수 있습니다.

Waiting

“How much longer until it’s Christmas?” When my children were little, they asked this question repeatedly. Although we used a daily Advent calendar to count down the days to Christmas, they still found the waiting excruciating.

We can easily recognize a child’s struggle with waiting, but we might under-estimate the challenge it can involve for all of God’s people. Consider, for instance, those who received the message of the prophet Micah, who promised that out of Bethlehem would come a “ruler over Israel” (5:2) who would “stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD ” (V 4). The initial fulfillment of this prophecy came when Jesus was born in Bethlehem (MATT 2:1) —after the people had waited some 700 years. But some of the prophecy’s fulfillment is yet to come. For we wait in hope for the return of Jesus, when all of God’s people will “live securely” and “his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth” (MIC 5:4). Then we will rejoice greatly, for our long wait will be over.

Most of us don’t find waiting easy, but we can trust that God will honor His promises to be with us as we wait (MATT 28:20). For when Jesus was born in little Bethlehem, He ushered in life in all its fullness (SEE JOHN 10:10)—life without condemnation. We enjoy His presence with us today while we eagerly wait for His return. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

햄과 달걀

우화 속의 닭과 돼지의 이야기에서, 이 둘이 함께 식당을 개업하자고 의논합니다. 메뉴를 짜던 중 닭이 햄과 달걀을 내어놓자고 제안하자, 돼지는 “그건 안 돼. 나는 몸을 헌신해야 하는데, 너는 그저 참여만 하는 거잖아”라며 즉시 반대했습니다.

돼지는 자신의 몸을 식탁에 올리는 것을 원치 않았지만 헌신에 대한 그의 이해는 하나님을 전심으로 잘 따르고자 하는 나에게 교훈을 줍니다.

유다 왕 아사는 그의 왕국을 지키기 위해 이스라엘 왕과 아람 왕 사이에 맺은 동맹관계를 깨고자 했습니다. 이를 위해 그는 자신의 보물과 “여호와의 전 곳간에 있는 은과 금”을 아람 왕 벤하닷에게 보내어 그의 지지를 구했습니다(역대하 16:2). 벤하닷은 이를 좋게 여겼고 유다와 아람의 연합군은 이스라엘을 격파하였습니다.

그러나 하나님의 선지자 하나니는 다른 대적들의 손에서 그들을 구원해주신 하나님 대신 인간의 도움에 의지한 아사를 어리석다고 하였습니다. 하나니는 “여호와의 눈은 온 땅을 두루 감찰하사 전심으로 자기에게 향하는 자들을 위하여 능력을 베푸신다”(9절)고 역설하였습니다.

우리의 싸움과 도전들에 직면하게 될 때 하나님이 우리의 최고의 우방임을 기억합시다. 우리가 온 마음을 다해 하나님께 기꺼이 헌신할 때 하나님은 우리를 강하게 해주십니다.

Ham and Eggs

In the fable of the chicken and the pig, the two animals discuss opening a restaurant together. As they plan their menu, the chicken suggests they serve ham and eggs. The pig swiftly objects saying, “No thanks. I’d be committed, but you would only be involved.”

Although the pig didn’t care to put himself on the platter, his understanding of commitment is instructive to me as I learn to better follow God with my whole heart.

To protect his kingdom, Asa, king of Judah, sought to break up a treaty between the kings of Israel and Aram. To accomplish this, he sent personal treasure along with “silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord’ s temple” to secure favor with Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram (2 CHRON 16:2). Ben-Hadad agreed and their joint forces repelled Israel.

But God’s prophet Hanani called Asa foolish for relying on human help instead of God who had delivered other enemies into their hands. Hanani asserted, “The eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (V 9).

As we face our own battles and challenges, let’s remember that God is our best ally. He strengthens us when we’re willing to “serve up” a whole-hearted commitment to Him. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

나중 된 자가 먼저 된다

나는 얼마 전에 지정 좌석이 없는 큰 여객기에 맨 마지막으로 탑승하게 되었습니다. 날개 옆에 위치한 가운데 좌석을 하나 찾기는 했지만 가방을 넣을 수 있는 곳은 맨 뒤쪽 자리 위에 있는 짐칸 뿐이었습니다. 이것은 내릴 때 다른 사람들이 다 내리고 난 후에야 뒤쪽으로 가서 내 짐을 꺼낼 수 있다는 것을 의미했습니다.

웃으면서 내 자리에 앉는데 주님께서 주시는 듯한 생각이 들었습니다. “기다리는 것 그렇게 나쁘지 않아. 오히려 네게 이로울 거야.” 그래서 나는 기다리는 시간을 즐겁게 보내기로 마음먹고, 착륙 후에 다른 승객들이 가방을 내리는 것을 도와주며 또 승무원이 뒤처리 하는 것을 거들어주었습니다. 마침내 내 가방을 내릴 수 있게 되었을 때, 어떤 사람이 나를 항공사 직원인줄 알아서 한 번 더 웃었습니다.

그날의 경험으로 나는 예수님께서 제자들에게 하신 다음 말씀을 깊이 생각해보게 되었습니다. “누구든지 첫째가 되고자 하면 뭇 사람의 끝이 되며 뭇 사람을 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라”(마가복음 9:35).

나는 할 수 없이 기다렸던 것이지만, “위아래가 뒤바뀌어 있는” 예수님의 나라에는 다른 사람들의 필요를 돌보기 위해 자신의 일을 기꺼이 제쳐놓는 사람들을 위한 영광의 자리가 마련되어 있습니다.

나를 우선으로 하는 성급한 이 세상에 예수님은 “섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려고”(마태복음 20:28) 오셨습니다. 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것이 예수님을 가장 잘 섬기는 것입니다. 우리가 더 낮게 굽힐수록 예수님과 더 가까워집니다.

The Last Will Be First

Recently I was among the last in line to board a large passenger jet with unassigned seating. I located a middle seat beside the wing, but the only spot for my bag was the overhead compartment by the very last row. This meant I had to wait for everyone to leave before I could go back and retrieve it.

I laughed as I settled into my seat and a thought occurred to me that seemed to be from the Lord: “It really won’t hurt you to wait. It will actually do you good.” So I resolved to enjoy the extra time, helping other passengers lower their luggage after we landed and assisting a flight attendant with cleaning. By the time I was able to retrieve my bag, I laughed again when someone thought I worked for the airline.

That day’s experience made me ponder Jesus’s words to His disciples: “Anyone who wants to be first, must be the very last, and the servant of all" (MARK 9:35).

I waited because I had to, but in Jesus’s “upside down” kingdom, there’s a place of honor for those who voluntarily set themselves aside to attend to others’ needs.

Jesus came into our hurried, me-first world not “to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (MATT 20:28). We serve Him best by serving others. The lower we bend, the closer we are to Him. - JAMES BANKS

불완전하지만 사랑받는

일본에서 식료품들은 아주 정갈하게 가공되고 포장됩니다. 식료품들은 맛도 좋아야 하지만 보기에도 좋아야 합니다. 때때로 내가 음식을 사는 것인지 겉포장을 사는 것인지 궁금할 때도 있습니다! 우수한 품질을 강조하는 일본이기에 조금이라도 결함이 있는 물건들은 종종 버려집니다. 그러나 최근 몇 년 사이, 와케아리 상품들이 인기를 얻고 있습니다. 와케아리란 일본어로 “이유가 있다”라는 뜻입니다. 이런 상품들(예를 들어 금이 간 쌀 과자)은 버려지지 않고 “이유가 있기 때문에” 싼 가격에 팔립니다.

일본에 사는 친구는, 와케아리가 누가 생각해도 결점이 있는 사람들을 일컫는 유행어이기도 하다고 말합니다.

예수님은 사회가 배척하는 와케아리들을 포함한 모든 사람들을 사랑하십니다. 죄 많은 삶을 살던 한 여인이 예수님이 바리새인의 집에서 식사하고 계심을 알고, 그 곳에 가서 예수님 뒤로
그분의 발 옆에 무릎을 꿇고 울었습니다(누가복음 7:37-38). 바리새인은 여인을 “죄인”(39절)이라고 불렀지만, 예수님은 여인을 받아들이셨습니다. 주님은 여인에게 부드럽게 말씀하셨고, 여인이 죄 사함 받았음을 알려주셨습니다(48절).

예수님은 당신과 나를 포함한 불완전한 와케아리 같은 사람들을 사랑하십니다. 우리를 향한 예수님의 가장 큰 사랑의 증표는 “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으신”(로마서 5:8) 것입니다. 주님의 사랑을 받은 사람으로서, 우리가 결점이 있는 주변 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 통로가 되어, 그들도 자신들의 불완전함에도 불구하고 하나님의 사랑을 받을 수 있음을 알 수 있게 되기를 소원합니다.

Imperfect, Yet Loved

In Japan, food products are immaculately prepared and packaged. Not only must they taste good but they must look good too. Often I wonder if I am purchasing the food or the packaging! Because of the Japanese emphasis on good quality, products with slight defects are often discarded. However, in recent years wakeari products have gained popularity. Wakeari means “there is a reason” in Japanese. These products are not thrown away but are sold at a cheap price “for a reason”—for example, a crack in a rice cracker.

My friend who lives in Japan tells me that wakeari is also a catchphrase for people who are obviously less than perfect.

Jesus loves all people—including the wakeari who society casts aside. When a woman who had lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at a Pharisee’s house, she went there and knelt behind Jesus at His feet, weeping (LUKE 7:37–38). The Pharisee labeled her “a sinner” (V. 39), but Jesus accepted her. He spoke gently to her, assuring her that her sins were forgiven (V. 48).

Jesus loves imperfect, wakeari people—which includes you and me. And the greatest demonstration of His love for us is that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ROM. 5:8). As recipients of His love, may we be conduits of His love to the flawed people around us so they too may know that they can receive God’s love despite their imperfections. ALBERT LEE

공감의 능력

알70아이(R70i) 나이 체험복을 입으면 곧바로 40살이 많아진 것처럼 느끼면서 시력손상, 청력상실, 그리고 신체 움직임의 제약을 경험하게 됩니다. 나이 체험복은 환자에 대한 간병인들의 이해를 돕기 위해 만들어졌습니다. ‘월스트리트 저널’ 통신원 제프리 파울러는 이 옷을 입어보고 이렇게 썼습니다. “잊을 수 없으며 때로는 고통스러웠던 이 경험은 늙는다는 것에 대해 깨닫게 해주었을 뿐만 아니라, 가상현실 장비가 어떻게 우리에게 공감을 가르쳐주고 주변 세상에 대한 우리의 인식을 형성할 수 있는지 조명해주었습니다.”

공감이란 다른 사람의 감정을 이해하고 함께 나눌 수 있는 능력입니다. 예수님을 따르는 사람들에 대한 박해가 심했던 시기에 히브리서 기자는 동료 신자들에게 이렇게 독려했습니다. “너희도 함께 갇힌 것 같이 갇힌자를 생각하고 너희도 몸을 가졌은즉 학대 받는 자를 생각하라”(13:3).

이것이야말로 정확히 우리의 구주께서 우리를 위해 하신 일입니다. 예수님은 우리와 같은 모습이 되셨습니다. “범사에 형제들과 같이 되심이 마땅하도다......백성의 죄를 속량하려 하심이라 그가 시험을 받아 고난을 당하셨은즉 시험 받는 자들을 능히 도우실 수 있느니라”(2:17-18).

우리와 같이 되셨던 예수 그리스도는 다른 사람들이 어려울 때 “[우리가] 그들과 함께 있는 것 같이” 그들과 함께 서 있으라고 요구하십니다.

The Power of Empathy

Put on the R70i Age Suit and you immediately feel forty years older as you experience impaired vision, hearing loss, and reduced mobility. The Age Suit was designed to help caregivers better understand their patients. Wall Street Journal correspondent Geoffrey Fowler wore one and wrote, “The unforgettable, and at times distressing, experience shed light not just on aging, but also how virtual reality equipment can teach empathy and shape our perceptions of the world around us.”

Empathy is the power to understand and share the feelings of another. During a time of severe persecution against the followers of Jesus, the writer of Hebrews urged fellow believers to “continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering” (13:3).

This is exactly what our Savior has done for us. Jesus was made like us, “fully human in every way . . . that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted” (2:17–18).

Christ the Lord, who became like us, calls us to stand with others “as if [we] were together with them” during their time of need. - DAVID MCCASLAND

능력의 하나님

나는 어느 날 바닷가에서, 카이트 서퍼들이 바람의 힘으로 움직이면서 물결을 따라 튀어 오르고 하는 모습을 즐겁게 구경하고 있었습니다. 그 중 한 명이 해변으로 다가왔을 때, 나는 그에게 실제로 해 보니까 카이트 서핑이 보이는 것처럼 어렵냐고 물었습니다. 그는 “아니요. 바람의 힘을 이용하기 때문에 실제로는 보통 서핑보다 쉽습니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

그 후 바닷가를 걸으며 서퍼들의 원동력이 될 뿐만 아니라 머리카락이 내 얼굴을 때리게 하는 바람의 능력에 대해 생각하다가, 문득 창조주 우리 하나님이 경이롭다는 생각에 잠시 멈춰 섰습니다. 구약의 아모스서에서 말하는 것처럼, “산들을 지으며 바람을 창조하신” 주님은 “아침을 어둡게” 하실 수 있는 분이십니다 (13절).

이 선지자를 통해 주님은 자기 백성들을 다시 부르실 때 그들에게 주님의 능력을 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 백성들이 주님께 순종하지 않았기 때문에 주님은 백성들에게 자신을 드러낼 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (13절). 비록 여기서는 주님의 심판을 보지만, 우리는 성경의 다른 곳에서는 우리를 구원하시기 위해 그분의 아들을 보내시는 하나님의 희생적인 사랑에 대해 말하고 있음을 알고 있습니다(요한복음 3:16 참조).

영국 남단에서 이렇게 미풍이 부는 날, 바람의 능력은 나에게 엄청난 능력의 주님을 상기시켜주었습니다. 만일 당신도 오늘 그 바람을 느낀다면, 잠깐 멈춰 서서 우리의 전능하신 하나님을 깊이 생각해보는 게 어떻겠습니까?

Our Powerful God

One day by the seaside, I delighted in watching some kite surfers as they bounced along the water, moved by the force of the wind. When one came to shore, I asked him if the experience was as difficult as it looked. “No,” he said, “It’s actually easier than regular surfing because you harness the power of the wind.”

Afterward as I walked by the sea, thinking about the wind’s ability not only to propel the surfers but also to whip my hair into my face, I paused to wonder at our God the Creator. As we see in the Old Testament book of Amos, He who “forms the mountains” and “creates the wind” can turn “dawn to darkness” (V. 13).

Through this prophet, the Lord reminded His people of His power as He called them back to Himself. Because they had not obeyed Him, He said He would reveal Himself to them (V. 13). Although we see His judgment here, we know from elsewhere in the Bible of His sacrificial love in sending His Son to save us (SEE JOHN 3:16).

The power of the wind on this breezy day in the South of England reminded me of the sheer immensity of the Lord. If you feel the wind today, why not stop and ponder our all-powerful God? - AMY BOUCHER PYE
