자신을 기리지 말고 하나님을 섬기라

고대 이집트의 파라오 람세스 2세는 자신을 지나치게 높여 자신의 영광을 기리는 수많은 건축물들을 세웠는데, 그 중에는 그의 신체적 특징을 표현한 기념비도 많이 있었습니다. 그 중 람세스 2세의 거대한 동상은 높이 36 피트(11미터), 무게 83톤에 달하는 붉은 화강암이 위용을 자랑합니다. 하지만 세월은 이 거만한 통치자를 비켜가지 않았습니다. 실제로, 죽을 당시 그는 치아 문제, 관절염, 만성 심장 질환 등으로 고통받고 있었습니다. 그 많던 그를 기리는 기념비 중 몇개가 지금까지 남아 있는지 모르나, 죽음을 피할 수 없는 모든 인간들처럼 그도 결국 세상을 떠났습니다.

다윗 왕의 아들 중 한 명인 압살롬도 “자기를 위하여 한 비석”을 세웠 습니다(사무엘하 18:18). 과거의 비극(13장 참조)에 대한 분노와 이기적인 야망에 사로잡힌 이 젊은이는 아버지에게서 “이스라엘 사람의 마음”을 훔치려 했습니다(15:6). 그러나 압살롬이 왕위를 찬탈하려 했을 때, 하나님은 그가 기름 부음 받은 왕 다윗(사무엘상 16:12-13)과 그의 용사들(사무엘하 18:6) 위에 군림하는 것을 허락하지 않으셨습니다. 결국 압살롬은 왕을 배반한 이유로 살해되었습니다. 비록 그의 기념비는 여전히 서 있었지만(18절), 그는 싸움터에서 초라하게 패배한 채 죽었습니다.

오직 자신을 위해 기념비를 세우고 자신의 교만과 욕망에 따라 산다면 반드시 그 끝이 좋지 못할 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 겸손히 하나님을 섬기고 진심으로 사랑할 때(빌립보서 2:3-8), 비로소 그분의 임재 안에서 진정한 의미와 충만함을 찾게 됩니다.

SERVING GOD, NOT SELF

The ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II thought so much of himself that he had numerous structures built in his honor, including many monuments that captured his physical features. One, the colossal statue of Ramesses II, stands thirty-six feet tall and weighs eighty-three tons in all its red-granite glory. Age wasn’t kind to the proud ruler, however. In fact, when he died, he was suffering from bad teeth, arthritis, and chronic heart problems. Some of his monuments might last for a while, but—like all mortals—he himself passed.

Absalom, one of King David’s sons, also built “a monument to himself” (2 SAMUEL 18:18). Fueled by rage from past tragedy (SEE CH. 13) and selfish ambition, this younger man worked to steal “the hearts of the people of Israel” from his father (15:6). When Absalom attempted to pilfer the throne, however, God didn’t allow him to overpower David, His anointed king (1 SAMUEL 16:12-13), and David’s fighting men (2 SAMUEL 18:6). In the end, Absalom was killed for his treachery. Although his monument still stood (V. 18), he died humbled and defeated.

Building monuments to ourselves and serving our own pride and desires won’t end well. But as we humbly serve God and love Him well (PHILIPPIANS 2:3-8), we’ll find true meaning and fulfillment in His presence.

하나님께 닻을 내리자

아침이 되자 남편은 휴대폰으로 그가 가장 좋아하는 복음성가인 “내 영혼이 닻을 내렸도다”를 틀었습니다. 가사는 격동의 시기에 하나님을 향한 우리들의 소망을 표현합니다. 남편은 요동치는 물결과 거세게 밀려오는 파도를 경고하는 노래의 가사를 따라 부릅니다. 노래는 “우리는 하나님께서 우리를 굳게 붙잡아 주시기 때문에 흔들리지 않는다”고 말하고 있습니다.

그 가사는 배의 닻이 하는 일을 완벽하게 묘사합니다. 닻은 “팔”을 바다 밑바닥에 박고 배를 고정시켜서 강한 돌풍 속에서도 배가 표류하거나 밀려나지 않게 합니다.

닻은 기독교 신앙의 고전적인 상징입니다. 삶의 혼란 속에서도 우리가 굳게 붙잡고 있는 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 소망을 표상합니다. 히브리서 기자는 “우리가 이 소망을 가지고 있는 것은 영혼의 닻 같아서 튼튼하고 견고하여” 히브리서 6:19)라고 말합니다. 이 소망은 바로 예수님이시며, 그분의 “변하지 아니함”(17절)은 그분을 믿는 사람들이 신뢰할 수 있는 굳건한 토대가 됩니다. 뿐만 아니라 하나님께서 약속하신 것을 맹세로 확증하셨으니, 이 “두 가지 변치 않는 사실” 속에서 “하나님께서 거짓말하실 수 없다”(17-18절)는 것이 드러납니다. 그러므로 하나님의 약속을 붙잡고 있는 우리는 “큰 안위를 받을 수 있게 됩니다”(18절).

어떤 사람들은 자신의 야망, 건전하지 않은 친구들 또는 부정적인 습관들과 같은 신뢰할 수 없는 것들에 닻을 내리기도 합니다. 하지만 우리가 믿고 의지할 수 있는 분에게 닻을 내리는 것이 훨씬 더 좋은 일입니다. 파도가 우리 주위에 몰아칠 때, 우리는 꿈쩍도 하지 않을 것입니다. 우리의 영혼이 하나님께 닻을 내렸기 때문입니다.

ANCHORED IN GOD

It’s morning, so my husband opens his phone to select his favorite gospel song, “My Soul Is Anchored.” The lyrics express hope in God in turbulent times. Dan sings along, the words warning of billows rolling and breakers dashing. But we don’t sway, the song says, because God holds us fast.

The words perfectly describe the work of a ship’s anchor. An anchor steadies a vessel by sinking its “arms” into the seabed, keeping the ship from drifting or getting tossed about during a violent squall.

The anchor has become a classic symbol of the Christian faith—reflecting our hope in Christ, to whom we hold tightly, even in life’s chaos. As the writer of Hebrews said, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (HEBREWS 6:19). This hope is Jesus, whose “unchanging nature” (V. 17) is a trusted holding ground for those who believe in Him. Moreover, what God promised He confirmed with an oath, and in these “two unchangeable things . . . it’s impossible for God to lie” (VV. 17-18). That’s why we who hold on to His promises “may be greatly encouraged” (V. 18).

Some may anchor in unreliable things—their own ambition, unhealthy friends, or negative habits. How much better to anchor in the one whom we know we can trust and depend on. When the waves crash around us, we’ll be held fast. Our soul is anchored in God.

도울 준비

내 친구는 곧 있을 운전면허 시험을 앞두고 평행 주차 연습을 해야 했습니다. 나는 기도하며 안전한 연습 장소를 찾다가 넓은 주차장을 가진 동네 교회로 갔습니다. 우리는 완벽하진 않았지만 접이식 의자로 연습 주차 공간을 만들고, 친구는 의자와 의자 사이로 후진 주차를 처음 시도해 보았습니다.

그때 그 교회 목사님이 운전 시험에 사용되는 것과 비슷한 오렌지색 주차콘을 손에 들고 나왔습니다. 우리에게 자신을 소개하면서 접이식 의자 대신 그 주차콘를 사용하면 어떻겠느냐고 물었습니다. 그리고 지난주 자기 교인들이 동네에 새로 이사온 주민들을 도울 방법들을 의논했다고 했습니다. “우리는 사람들이 우리 주차장에서 이 주차콘을 사용하여 운전 연습을 하게 하자고 결정했습니다.” 그 교회 교인들은 다른 사람들을 돕기 위해 미리 준비한 것입니다. 내 친구에게 얼마나 큰 축복입니까.

다른 사람들을 돕기 위한 준비. 바로 그것이 하나님께서 우리를 위해, 우리 안에서 행하신 일입니다. 하나님은 우리가 선한 일을 하고 서로 돌보도록 “전에 예비하셨습니다”(에베소서 2:10). 바울 사도는 하나님의 인도하심에 따라 하나님의 목적을 위해 “우리는 그가 만드신 바라”(10절)고 말합니다. 구원은 “긍휼이 풍성하신”(4절) 하나님의 선물입니다(8절). 우리의 선행은 하나님께서 우리를 통해 이루시는 일입니다. 하나님은 우리를 준비시키셨으며, 우리가 다른 사람들에게 다가가는 데 필요한 긍휼과 지혜를 주실 것입니다.

PREPARED TO HELP

My friend needed to practice parallel parking before her driving test that was coming up soon. I was prayerfully looking for a safe place to teach her when the idea came to go to a neighborhood church with an ample parking lot. After we set up what turned out to be a less-than-ideal practice parking space using folding chairs, she made her first attempt to back into the spot between the chairs.

Then the pastor came out with orange cones in hand, similar to the kind used in a driving test. He introduced himself and asked, “Could you use these cones?” He explained that just last week their church family had discussed ways to help neighbors new to the community. “We talked about letting people use these cones in our parking lot for parking practice.” They had prepared to help others, and what a blessing they were for my friend.

Prepared to help others. That’s exactly what God did for us and in us. He “prepared in advance” for us to do good works and care for others (EPHESIANS 2:10). The apostle Paul says, “We are God’s handiwork” (V. 10), so we serve under His direction and for His purposes. Salvation is a gift from God (V. 8), who is “rich in mercy” (V. 4). Our good works are a work of God through us. He’s prepared us and will give us the compassion and wisdom we need to reach out to others.

기쁨의 리듬

어느 과학 연구에서 사람들의 음악적 감각이 어느 정도까지가 문화적 영향이고 어느 정도까지가 본능적인지 알기 위해 신생아들에게 북소리 리듬을 들려주며 뇌파를 관찰했습니다. 연구자들은 가끔 리듬에서 한 박자를 빠뜨리기도 했습니다. 놀랍게도, 그 박자가 빠진 바로 그 순간에 아기들의 뇌파가 갑자기 급증했는데, 이는 그 어린 마음들이 이미 그 리듬을 기대하고 있다가 한 박자가 빠지자 알고 반응했음을 보여줍니다.

하나님께서 “슬픔이 변하여 내게 춤이 되게” 하시고 “기쁨으로 띠 띠우셨을”(11절) 때, 다윗은 비로소 기쁨을 다시 회복하며 하나님의 신실하심을 경험합니다. 하나님께서 우리의 마음을 치유하시고 우리를 지으신 목적대로 기쁨의 리듬에 맞추어 춤추게 하실 때, 우리도 고백할 수 있습니다. “여호와 나의 하나님이여 내가 주께 영원히 감사하리이다”(12절).

RHYTHMS OF JOY

A scientific study—which sought to explore how much of people’s musical sensitivity is cultural and how much of it is instinctual—played drum rhythms for newborn babies while monitoring their brain wave activity. Occasionally, the researchers would omit a beat from the rhythm. Amazingly, they found the infants’ brain waves spiked right when the note was left out—showing their young minds were already anticipating that beat and reacting to its absence.

The study brings to mind the amazing way that God has created us. He’s even wired us to embrace the wonderful gift of music and respond to it with joy and, as the psalmist David writes in Psalm 30, to respond to God’s grace with music of our own—songs of “praise [to] his holy name” (V. 4).

Yet pain, exhaustion, regret, or grief can sometimes weigh our hearts down and threaten to silence our songs of praise. Experiencing despair, even fearing death, David pleaded with God to deliver, asking “What is gained if I am silenced? . . . Will the dust praise you?” (V. 9).

David did experience God’s faithfulness as joy was restored once more, as God turned his “wailing into dancing” and “clothed [him] with joy” (V. 11). As God heals our hearts and fills them with the rhythms of joy we were born to dance to, we too can testify: “Lord my God, I will praise you forever” (V. 12).

예수님처럼 살아가자

벤은 몇 해 동안 불법 복제된 컴퓨터 소프트웨어를 구입했었습니다. 가격이 훨씬 저렴했기 때문입니다. 불법이고 저작권법을 위반하는 행위였지만, 그는 그것이 도덕적으로 잘못되었다고 느끼지 못했습니다. 어차피 다들 그렇게 하는데, 왜 그가 비싼 정품을 사야 할까요? 누가 그걸 확인하겠습니까?

이제 막 믿음을 키워가던 새 신자 벤은 하나님의 기준에 따라 사는 삶의 본보기에 관한 강연을 들은 후, 궁금해하기 시작했습니다. ‘옳은 일을 한다는 게 대체 무슨 뜻일까?’

그는 사용하던 모든 소프트웨어를 정품으로 바꾸기로 결심했습니다. 훨씬 비쌌지만, 그는 친구들에게 이렇게 설명합니다. “하나님은 다 아셔. 그리고 하나님은 옳은 일을 하라고 요구하셔. ‘맞잖아’?”

아모스 7장에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 그분의 기준은 공평하고 절대적이며 그분이 선택한 나라를 포함해서 어디서나 적용된다는 점을 상기 시켰습니다. 하나님의 법과 도덕적 기준은 마치 건축할 때 벽이 완벽한 수직을 이루었는지 건물의 구조를 확인하기 위해 사용하는 무게 추 “다림줄”(8절)과 같습니다.

하나님은 자비를 베푸시지만, 결코 정의를 타협하지는 않으십니다. 그래서 우리 죄의 대가를 치르게 하시려고 독생자 예수님을 보내신 것입니다. 성경은 과연 우리가 하나님의 길을 따라 걷고 있는지 아닌지 알 수 있게 해줍니다. 하나님은 예수님을 믿는 자들에게 은혜를 베푸시사, 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 영광을 돌리는 삶, 곧 옳은 일을 행하도록 도와주십니다.

WALKING LIKE JESUS

Ben had bought pirated computer software for years, simply because it was cheaper. Even though it was illegal and broke copyright laws, he didn’t feel that it was morally wrong. After all, everyone did it, and why should he buy expensive original software? Who would check?

After hearing a talk on daily examples of living by God’s standards, however, Ben, a new believer growing in the faith, began to wonder, What does it mean to do the right thing?

Ben decided to replace all his software with original versions. It cost a lot more, but, as he explained to his friends, “God knows. And He calls us to do what’s right, right?”

In Amos 7, God reminded the Israelites that His standards were impartial and absolute and applied to all, including His favored nation. His laws and moral standards were like “a plumb line” (V. 8)—a weighted line used by builders to ensure structural integrity by showing if a wall wasn’t being built perfectly vertical.

While He may extend mercy, God can’t compromise His justice—which is why He sent His Son Jesus to die in our place as payment for our sin. The Bible shows us whether we’re walking in His way or not. By His grace, God helps those who believe in Jesus to live in a way that pleases Him and brings honor to Him—to do what’s right.

위로를 전달하라

55년의 기다림 끝에, 마침내 영국 축구 대표팀이 유럽 축구 선수권 대회 결승전에 진출했습니다. 이탈리아와 팽팽히 맞선 끝에 승부차기로 승부를 정하게 되었습니다. 잉글랜드의 마지막 기회가 부카요 사카라는 젊은 선수에게 달려 있었습니다. 하지만 사카의 페널티킥을 이탈리아 골키퍼가 막아냈습니다. 영국 팬들은 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 우승컵을 놓친 것입니다.

그러나 바로 그때 잊지못할 장면이 펼쳐졌습니다. 영국 대표팀 감독 개러스 사우스게이트가 망연자실한 사카 선수에게 다가가 그를 안아준 것입니다. 감독은 사카의 심정을 알고 있었습니다. 1996년, 젊은 선수였던 그가 페널티킥에 실패하여 영국의 준결승 진출이 좌절되었을 때, 당시 영국 팀 감독이었던 테리 베너블스가 똑같은 모습으로 그를 위로해 주었습니다.

바울은 말합니다. “찬송하리로다 그는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님 이시요 자비의 아버지시요 모든 위로의 하나님이시며 우리의 모든 환난 중에서 우리를 위로하사 우리로 하여금 하나님께 받는 위로로써 모든 환난 중에 있는 자들을 능히 위로하게 하시는 이시로다”(고린도후서 1:3-4). 사우스게이트가 베너블스에게서 받은 위로를 사카에게 돌려 준 것처럼, 바울은 자신이 고난 가운데 있을 때 하나님께서 위로해주셨기 때문에 자신도 다른 이들의 고난을 위로하며 인내심을 길러줄 수 있게 되었다는 것을 깨달았습니다(6절). “모든 위로의 하나님”(3절)은 우리의 실망도 선한 일에 쓰실 수 있으십니다.

그러므로 우리도 그와 같이 하여 끊임없는 격려의 사슬을 만들어 하나님의 위로를 전달합시다.

PASS IT ON

After a fifty-five year wait, England’s soccer team finally made it to the European Football Championship Cup finals. Locked in a tie with Italy, the game was decided by a penalty shootout. England’s last chance fell to a young player named Bukayo Saka. But as Saka kicked the penalty shot, Italy’s goalkeeper deflected it. England fans wept; the Cup was lost.

Few will forget what happened next, though. England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, walked over to the devastated Saka and embraced him. Southgate knew how Saka felt. In 1996 it was he, as a young player, who had missed the penalty shot that cost England a place in the semifinals, and England’s then-manager Terry Venables had comforted him in the very same way.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Paul says, “who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-4). Just as Southgate passed on to Saka what he’d received from Venables, Paul discovered that God’s comfort in his distress enabled him to comfort others in theirs, building their endurance (V. 6). Our “God of all comfort” (V. 3) can use our disappointment for good.

So let’s do the same, passing on God’s comfort to create an endless chain of encouragement.

종신형을 선고받은 빅은 친구들에게 자신의 갈망하는 마음을 털어 놓았습니다. 친구들이 예수님께서 빅의 삶의 빈자리를 채워 주실 거라고 말하자 그는 비웃었습니다. 빅에게는 이미 오래전에 죽은 예수님이 오늘날까지 살아 계신다는 말이 한낱 환상처럼 들렸습니다. 회의적이었지만, 얼마 후 그는 기독교 라디오 방송을 듣기 시작했고 심지어 성경도 읽었습니다. 마침내 그는 하나님의 모습을 보여 달라고 간구했습니다.

빅에게 불안과 공포가 사라지기 시작했습니다. 그는 이렇게 회상했습니다. “몸은 두 개의 거대한 우리 같은 담장 안에 수감되어 있었지만, 마음은 사자 굴에 갇혔던 다니엘처럼 자유롭고 보호받았습니다.” 그로부터 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 예수님을 자신의 구주로 영접했습니다.

빅은 유다에서 포로로 잡혀 와 사자 굴에 던져진 다니엘의 이야기를 구약 성서에서 읽었습니다. 다니엘은 왕이 자신 외에 다른 신에게 기도하는 것을 30일 동안 금지하는 칙령을 내렸음에도(다니엘 6:6-10), 하루 세 번 하나님께 기도하는 것을 멈추지 않았습니다. 왕은 “심히 근심”했으며 다니엘이 죽을 것이 분명한 사자 굴 처형을 집행해야 함을 안타까워 했습니다(14, 16절). 그때 하나님은 자신의 능력과 권위를 드러내시며 다니엘을 안전하게 지키셨고, “왕은 심히 기뻐하였습니다”(23절).

어떤 상황 속에서도, 그것이 큰 역경일지라도, 하나님은 결코 우리를 떠나지 않으십니다. 우리는 그분께로 향하기만 하면 됩니다.

THE GOD WHO SAVES

Sentenced to life in prison, Vic shared with friends his sense of longing. When they said that Jesus would fill the empty spaces in Vic’s life, he mocked their statements. To Vic, Jesus being a man who died yet still lived today seemed fantastical. Although skeptical, sometime later he began listening to a Christian radio station and even reading the Bible. Eventually he asked God to reveal Himself to him.

Vic’s anxieties and fears began to fade. He reflected, “Physically, I was incarcerated in a prison with two massive cage-like fences keeping me in, but mentally I was free and protected like Daniel when he was in the den with the lions.” Shortly thereafter, he received Jesus as his Savior.

Vic read the Old Testament story of Daniel, an exile from Judah who was thrown into a den with lions. Daniel had refused to stop praying to God three times a day, even when the king signed an edict disallowing all prayer for thirty days except to himself (DANIEL 6:6-10). The king was “greatly distressed” and regretted having to punish him with a certain death by the lions (VV. 14, 16). But God, revealing His power and authority, kept Daniel safe, and “the king was overjoyed” (V. 23).

Whatever our circumstances, including great hardship, God never leaves us. We need only to turn to Him.

막힌 길, 성령의 인도를 따를 것

긴 여행 끝에 아내와 내가 집에 거의 다 왔을 때 ‘통행금지’라는 큰 표지판이 길을 막고 있었습니다. 집이 바로 앞에 있었기에 우회하기 싫어서 그냥 지나쳐버리고 싶었습니다. 그런데 그때 길을 막은 연유가 눈에 들어왔습니다. 끊어진 전선이 길에 가로놓여 있었던 것입니다. 그 경고를 무시했더라면 우리가 위험에 빠질 수도 있었을 것입니다.

사도행전 16:6-10에서 바울과 그의 동역자들은 아시아 지역에서 복음 전하기를 간절히 원했지만, 성령께서 그 문을 닫으셨습니다. 하지만 우회한다는 것이 항상 거절을 의미하지는 않습니다. 우리 동네의 도로 차단처럼, 그것이 성령님의 방향 전환일 수 있습니다. 하나님은 바울이 비두니아 지방으로 가는 길을 막으셨습니다. 총력을 다하고 있던 바울에게는 낙담이 되었을 것입니다. 그런데 바울이 본 환상에서 한 사람이 “마게도냐로 건너와서 우리를 도우라” (9절)고 말했습니다. 하나님은 선한 사역에 대해 “안된다”고 하셨는데, 그것은 다른 대륙의 사람들에게 복음을 전하도록 그들을 준비시키고 계셨기 때문입니다(10절).

“안돼”를 처벌과 거절로 보기보다는, 성령이 이끄시는 방향 전환으로 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님의 우회는 종종 그분이 준비하신 다른 일을 향해 가는 길입니다. 길이 순조롭게 열릴 때만 하나님이 인도하신다고 믿지 말고, 그 분이 길을 막으실 때에도 따릅시다.

ROAD CLOSED, SPIRIT-LED

After a lengthy journey, my wife and I finally neared our street, but a large road closed to thru traffic sign blocked our path. I felt the urge to drive around it because home was just ahead, and I didn’t like being rerouted. But then I saw why the road was closed: A downed power line lay across the road. Had I ignored the warning, I could have driven into danger.

In Acts 16:6-10, Paul and his companions were eager to preach the gospel in the province of Asia, but the Holy Spirit closed that door. Detours aren’t always rejection, however. They can be divine redirections. Like the roadblock on our street, God rerouted Paul from entering the province of Bithynia. It must have been frustrating to be blocked, especially while Paul was striving to do his best. But then he received a vision in which a man said, “Come over to Macedonia and help us” (V. 9). God said “no” to something good because He was preparing them for something else—taking the gospel to the people of another continent (V. 10).

Rather than seeing “no” as punishment and rejection, we can see it as His Spirit-led redirection. His detours are often pathways to divine appointments. Let’s not simply trust His direction when the roads are open; let’s follow when He closes them too.

하나님이 만드신 작품

잠자리는 놀라운 비행 능력과 지구력을 가진 섬세한 곤충입니다. 잠자리의 비행 능력은 항공기술을 향상시키는데 좋은 연구자료가 되어 왔습니다. 과학자들은 최근 잠자리가 초당 30번 날개를 퍼덕이며 거꾸로 떨어진 상태에서도 불과 0.2초 만에 자세를 바로잡을 수 있다는 사실을 발견했습니다. 잠자리의 눈은 놀랍게도 초당 무려 200개의 이미지를 파악하면서 어디가 위쪽 인지 찾아내고 이에 따른 미세한 위치조정이 가능합니다.

하나님의 창조력과 지혜는 자연계 곳곳에 드러나 있습니다. 욥기에서 주인공은 자신의 고통 속에서도 하나님의 선하심과 의로움을 의심하지 않으려 노력합니다. 하나님은 욥에게 물으셨습니다. “네가 하늘의 궤도를 아느냐 하늘로 하여금 그 법칙을 땅에 베풀게 하겠느냐”(38:33). 하나님은 새와 염소부터 세상에서 가장 큰 포식 동물에 이르기까지 많은 동물을 묘사하기 시작하십니다. 하나님은 각 동물의 생존에 필요한 것을 알고 계시며, 새끼들의 배고픈 울음 소리까지 아십니다(38:39-41). 하나님은 타조의 빠른 속도나 소의 힘과 같이 각 동물에게 독특한 특성을 주셔서 번성하게 하셨습니다.

잠자리의 그 놀라운 기동력은 어떻게 가능한 걸까요? 우리가 아직 모르는 점이 많습니다. 하지만 우리는 이 생물들을 설계하신 전지전능하신 하나님이 우리를 가장 어두운 밤에서 주님의 임재의 빛과 기쁨으로 인도하시는 바로 그 분임을 믿을 수 있습니다.

GOD’S HANDIWORK

Dragonflies are dainty insects with some of the most amazing flight and endurance capabilities. Their aerial abilities have been studied to improve flight technology. Scientists recently found that with its wings beating thirty times a second, a dragonfly that has fallen upside-down can right itself in just 0.2 seconds. Its eyes process an incredible two hundred images per second to determine which way is up and make tiny adjustments.

God’s creativity and wisdom are on display all throughout our natural world. In the book of Job, the main character struggles to reconcile his suffering with God’s goodness and righteousness. God responds by asking Job, “Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?” (38:33). God begins to describe many animals from birds and goats to the world’s largest predators. He knows what each animal needs for survival and is aware of the hungry cries of their young (38:39-41). God has given each of them distinct characteristics, such as the speed of an ostrich or the strength of an ox, so they can thrive.

How exactly does a dragonfly maneuver so incredibly? We have a lot to learn. And yet we can trust that the all-knowing God who designed these creatures is the same one who knows how to bring us from the darkest night into the light and joy of His presence.

누구를 필요로 합니까?

어느 유명한 운동선수가 자신의 승리를 확신하는 챔피언십 경기에 참가 하려고 비행기에 탑승하여 허리를 쭉 펴고 당당하게 좌석에 앉았습니다. 승무원이 지나가며 말했습니다. “승객님, 안전띠를 착용해 주세요.” 이 선수는 웃으며 말했습니다. “슈퍼맨은 안전띠가 필요 없답니다.” 승무원은 주저 없이 대답했습니다. “슈퍼맨이면 비행기도 필요 없겠군요. 안전띠를 착용 하세요.” 결국 그는 안전띠를 맸습니다.

성공은 우리를 자만하게 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 안전띠도, 무엇을 해야 하는지 지시하는 승무원도 필요 없다며 알아서 잘 할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 우리가 그런 태도로 교회에 나간다면, 마치 눈이 손 더러 “내가 너를 쓸 데가 없다”고 하거나, 머리가 발 더러 “내가 너를 쓸 데가 없다”(21절)고 말하는 것과 같습니다. 진실은 몸의 모든 지체가 필요하다는 것과 “더 약하게 보이는 몸의 지체가 도리어 요긴하다”(22절) 는 것입니다.

우리는 삼위일체 하나님 즉, 성부와 성자와 성령의 형상대로 지음 받았 으며. 상호 의존하는 사랑의 공동체 안에서 번성해 갑니다. 스스로 완전한 관계 속에 존재하시는 하나님은 우리가 삶과 교회 안에서 다른 이들과 관계를 맺고 살도록 창조하셨습니다. 우리가 모두 똑같지 않게 창조되었다는, 그것이 오히려 좋은 일입니다. “만일 온 몸이 눈이면 듣는 곳은 어디”(17절)입니까?. 우리는 모두 똑같지 않지만, 모두가 “요긴” 합니다(22절). 당신이 속한 교회에서 누가 당신을 도와줍니까? 당신이 그들의 섬김을 알고 있으며, 보고 있다고 그들에게 말해주십시오. 그리고 감사의 마음을 전하십시오. 또한 하나님께 당신이 어떤 방식으로 다른 성도들을 섬길 수 있는지 보여달라고 기도하십시오.

WHO DO YOU NEED?

A famous athlete sat tall in his seat as he prepared to fly to the championship bout he knew he’d win. A flight attendant walked by and said, “Sir, please fasten your seat belt.” The man smiled. “Superman don’t need no seat belt.” She replied without missing a beat, “Superman don’t need no airplane. Buckle up.” And he did.

Success can swell our heads. We don’t need a seatbelt or a flight attendant telling us what to do. We can take care of ourselves. If we bring this attitude to church, we’re like an eye that says to the hand, “I don’t need you!” or a head that says to the feet, “I don’t need you!” (1 CORINTHIANS 12:21). The truth is, every part of the body is needed, and “those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable” (V. 22).

We’re made in the image of the triune God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who thrive in an interdependent community of love. The God who exists in perfect relationship within Himself made us to be in relationship with others in life and in the church. We’re not all the same, and that’s a good thing. “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?” (V. 17). We’re not all the same but we’re all “indispensable” (V. 22). Who helps you at your local body of Christ? Tell them you notice, that you see them, and thank them for their service. And ask God to show you where you can serve other believers.
