하나님께서 새롭게 사용하시는 은사

팀 멀레인 선장은 ‘SS 유나이티드 스테이츠호’라는 거대한 여객선을 바다에 가라앉히는 일에 부지런히 매달렸습니다. 실제로 그는 배를 바다 밑바닥으로 깊이 가라앉히는 일을 하고 보수를 받습니다. 멀레인 선장은 7대양을 항해하던 선박들을 가라앉혀 해저에서 인공 암초 역할을 하도록 용도를 변경하는 일을 합니다. 이렇게 가라앉은 선박들은 스쿠버 다이버들에게 매력적인 탐험 장소가 되고, 해변 침식을 억제하여 해안선을 보호하는 데 도움을 줍니다. 이 배들은 더 이상 파도를 헤치며 항해하지는 않지만, 바다 깊은 곳에 누워서도 계속해서 가치 있는 역할을 다하고 있습니다.

모세의 지팡이도 이스라엘 백성에게 매우 귀중하게 쓰이는 도구로 용도가 바뀌었습니다. 하나님께서 모세에게 “네 손에 있는 것이 무엇이냐”고 물으시자, 모세는 양을 치는데 사용한 “지팡이니이다”라고 대답했습니다(출애굽기 4:2). 모세는 40년 동안 양을 쳤지만(사도행전 7:29-30), 이제 그의 지팡이는 하나님의 백성을 애굽으로부터 인도해 내는 목자의 도구로 사용될 것입니다. 그 지팡이는 하나님께서 모세를 통해 역사하신다는 상징이 되었고, 모세가 “그것으로 이적들을 행할 때”(출애굽기 4:17) 하나님의 능력이 나타났습니다. 모세가 “지팡이를 하늘을 향하여” 높이 들면 하나님께서는 애굽 땅에 우박을 내리셨고 (9:23), 나중에는 이스라엘 백성이 “바다 가운데 육지로 행하게” 하셨습니다 (14:16).

GIFTS REPURPOSED BY GOD

Captain Tim Mullane diligently worked at sinking the SS United States—a massive ocean liner. In fact, he was paid to send it down to the depths. Mullane repurposes ships from sailing the seven seas to serving as instant artificial reefs on the ocean floor. Sunken vessels provide attractive destinations for scuba divers and help protect coastlines as they curb the erosion of beaches. While no longer riding ocean waves, the ships continue to provide value lying far beneath them.

Moses’ shepherd’s staff was repurposed for something that would prove to be invaluable for the Israelites. God asked him, “What is that in your hand?” Moses replied, “A shepherd’s staff” (EXODUS 4:2 NLT). Moses cared for sheep for forty years (ACTS 7:29-30), but his staff would now be used to shepherd his people out of Egypt. The staff was a symbol of God’s working through Moses, and as he “[performed] the signs with it” (EXODUS 4:17), God’s power was revealed. As Moses stretched out his “staff toward the sky” God rained hail on Egypt (9:23) and later allowed the Israelites to pass through “the sea on dry ground” (14:16).

God repurposed Moses’ staff and role to accomplish His purposes. He’ll often use our gifts and talents in fresh ways too. How might He be using your “staff” in a new way during this season of life?

모든 선한 일들

일찍 세상을 떠나는 모든 죽음이 그렇듯이, 조의 죽음은 그를 아는 사람 들에게 큰 충격을 주었습니다. 세상을 떠나기 바로 전, 그는 몇 가지 잘못된 선택들을 하기 시작했습니다. 이제 이 남편이자, 아버지, 운동 팀의 코치, 청소년부 지도자였던 그는 자신을 의지하던 사람들 곁에 더 이상 머물러 줄 수 없게 되었습니다.

요시야가 지혜롭지 못하게 생을 마쳤지만, 선지자 예레미야는 “그를 위하여 애가를 지었습니다”(25절). 이야기는 이렇게 끝납니다. “요시야의 남은 사적과 여호와의 율법에 기록된 대로 행한 모든 선한 일과... 이스라엘과 유다 열왕기에 기록되니라”(26-27절). 그가 행한 ‘모든 선한 일들’, 때 이른 죽음에 대한 시의적절한 묘비명이었다고 생각합니다.

ACTS OF DEVOTION

Like all early departures from this life, Joe’s death shocked those who knew him. Just before he died, he’d begun making poor decisions. Now this husband, father, coach, and youth leader would no longer be there for those who’d relied on him.

It’s easy to focus on Joe’s recent bad choices. Yet when his daughter spoke at his funeral, she rightly highlighted how her dad, though flawed like all of us, had served Jesus with his life.

We find something similar in the story of Judah’s King Josiah. When Egypt’s King Necho mounted a military offensive against Babylon, Josiah foolishly “marched out to meet him in battle” (2 CHRONICLES 35:20). Necho had no intention of attacking Judah (V. 21), and Josiah’s intervention ignored “God’s command” (V. 22). It cost him his life (VV. 23-24).

Though Josiah finished unwisely, the prophet Jeremiah “composed laments for Josiah” (V. 25). The story concludes, “The other events of Josiah’s reign and his acts of devotion . . . are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah” (VV. 26-27). Acts of devotion. A timely epitaph for an untimely death.

It’s good to ponder the apostle Paul’s words: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (ROMANS 8:1). As we consider how our heavenly Father sees us in Christ, it’s easy to recall the acts of devotion done by His children who’ve left us.

친구들의 말

스물여섯 살 때 나는 성경 공부 시간에 앉아 있다가 좀 의아했습니다. 함께 공부하던 사람들이 하는 말들이 나를 맥 빠지게 했기 때문입니다. 그들에게는 너무나 많은 문제가 있는 것 같았습니다. 저는 이런 질문을 던졌습니다. “그리스도인이라는 우리가 왜 이렇게 축 처져 있어야 하죠? 결국 그 모든 일이 어떻게 끝날 지 그 결말을 우리는 알고 있지 않나요?” 그리스도 안에서 얻은 영생의 약속뿐만 아니라, 자기 백성을 돌보신다 하신 성경에 나오는 하나님의 수많은 약속들을 두고 한 말이었습니다. 그 성경반 교사는 그저 미소를 지으며 수업을 계속 이어갔습니다. 하지만 내가 던진 이 질문은 여러 해 동안 내 뇌리에 남아 있었습니다.

그러다가 마침내 내 삶에도 고난이 닥쳤습니다. 실직, 사별, 질병 등, 여러 가지 일들로 나는 낙심하게 되었습니다. 그렇습니다. 하나님의 약속은 위로가 되고 진실하지만 평탄한 삶을 약속해 주지 않습니다. 예수님도 우리가 세상에서 “환난을 당할 것”이라고 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 16:33).

욥이라는 인물이 그랬던 것처럼, 우리가 그러한 고난을 받고 충격을 느끼는 것은 지극히 자연스러운 일입니다. 욥은 시험을 받았고, 큰 타격을 입었습니다. 자녀와 재산, 그리고 자신의 건강까지 모두 잃었습니다(욥기 1:13-20; 2:7). 그의 친구들이 그를 위로하기 위해 찾아왔습니다(2:11-13). 처음에는 그들도 “욥의 고통이 심함”을 보고 조용히 친구의 곁을 지켰습니다(13절). 하지만 이내 그들은 도움이 되지 않는 질문들을 쏟아내기 시작했습니다. 내가 성경 공부 시간에 던졌던 질문과 그리 다르지 않은 것들이었습니다.

고난을 겪는 사람들을 마주할 때, 성령님은 우리가 사랑과 긍휼로 반응 하도록 도와주십니다. 그리고 우리 자신이 슬픔을 겪을 때, 우리는 하나님의 약속이 주는 위로를 기억할 수 있습니다.

WORDS FROM FRIENDS

As I sat in a Bible class at the age of twenty-six, I was baffled. Some of my classmates’ comments were discouraging. They seemed to have so many problems. I responded by asking, “If we’re Christians, why are we so down? Don’t we know how this thing really ends?” I was referring to the promise of eternal life in Christ but also to the many promises in the Bible of God’s care for His people. The instructor simply smiled and moved on. But my comment has stuck with me for years.

Eventually life hit me. Job loss, bereavement, illness, and more led me to feel discouraged. Yes, God’s promises are comforting and true, but they don’t promise an easy life. Jesus said we “will have trouble” (JOHN 16:33).

Quite naturally, we feel the impact of such troubles, just as a man named Job did. He was tested, and it hit him hard: He lost his children, his property, and his health (JOB 1:13-20; 2:7). His friends came to visit him to console him (2:11-13). In the beginning they simply supported their friend quietly, noting “how great his suffering was” (V. 13). But then they began asking unhelpful questions, not too dissimilar to the one I posed in Bible class.

As we encounter others going through trouble, the Holy Spirit can help us respond with love and compassion. And as we experience sorrow, we can remember the comfort of God’s promises.

울면서 받은 위로

어머니의 전화는 밤 9시쯤 걸려왔습니다. “너희 아버지...돌아가셨어.” 며칠 동안 이 전화를 예상하고 있었고, 아버지가 더 이상 고통받지 않게 되어 안도했지만, 그 소식은 여전히 큰 충격이었습니다. 그 후 며칠, 몇 주 동안 슬픔이 밀려와 나는 하염없이 울었습니다.

아버지를 잃은 것은 우리 모두에게 힘든 일이었지만, 가족 중 믿지 않는 사람들에게는 특히 더 힘든 일이었습니다. 그들은 아버지가 이 세상에서 영원히 사라졌다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 바로 그때 나는 예수님을 믿는 것이 우리가 슬픔을 이겨내는 데 얼마나 큰 도움이 되는지 깨닫게 되었습니다.

COMFORT AMIDST TEARS

The call from my mother came around 9 p.m. “It’s about your dad,” she said. “He’s gone.” While I’d been expecting this call for days and was relieved my father was no longer in pain, the news still hit hard. I sobbed deeply as grief took its course over the following days and weeks.

While losing my father was hard on us all, it was particularly hard for some of my unbelieving family members. To their understanding, Dad was gone forever. It was then that I realized how believing in Jesus helps us to grieve.

Paul explained it this way: Since Jesus rose again from death, those who believe in Him will one day rise again too (1 THESSALONIANS 4:14). This will happen on the day He gathers us up to spend eternity together with Him (VV. 16-17). Paul tells us this “so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope” (V. 13). Knowing I will see my father again brings comfort amidst the tears.

Scripture never promotes griefless loss. Even Jesus wept for a dead friend he knew would return to life (JOHN 11:34-44). And sometimes we don’t know what a loved one believed before they died. Still, our grief has a safety net. Because of Him, we will see our believing loved ones again, and we can entrust all into His care.

따뜻한 교회 공동체

어린 시절, 나는 주일 아침과 저녁마다 가족과 함께 기쁜 마음으로 교회에 갔습니다. 우리 목사님은 늘 기쁨이 넘치는 분이셨고, 항상 아이들을 예배에 참여시켰으며, 심지어 내 글쓰기까지 격려해 주었습니다. 주일 학교 교사들과 목사님은 내게 성경을 사랑하는 마음을 심어 주신 것입니다. 주일 저녁이면 초청 강사나 선교사가 와서 선교에 대한 열정을 마음에 불러 일으켜 주었습니다. 우리 교회는 목사님이 만든 “콜드워터 로드에 위치한 따뜻한 마음의 교회”라는 표어에 걸맞는 교회 공동체였습니다. 완벽하지는 않았지만 우리는 한 가족이었습니다. 그 후 나는 적당한 교회를 찾기 어려운 시기에도 교회를 계속 다녔고, 그 결과, 신앙 안에서 위로를 얻고 내 믿음도 성장할 수 있었 습니다.

초대교회의 성도들도 오늘날의 우리와 마찬가지로, 지지와 격려가 필요 했으며, 믿음의 식구들과 함께 모이는 것의 중요성을 잘 알고 있었습니다(사도행전 2:46). 그들은 가족이었습니다. 세상살이와 하나님을 섬기는 일이 힘들어질 때면 그들은 함께하며 서로를 든든히 붙들어 주었습니다. 그들은 모여서 기도하고, 말씀을 배우며, 하나님을 찬양하고, 교제하며, 음식을 나누었습니다(42절). 그 결과 하나님께서는 날마다 구원받는 사람들이 늘어나게 하셨습니다(47절).

THE WARMHEARTED CHURCH

When I was a child, I gladly accompanied my family to church every Sunday morning and evening. Our pastor exuded joy and always included the children in the service—and even encouraged my writing. My Sunday school teachers and pastor instilled in me a love for Scripture. And Sunday nights often meant a guest speaker or missionary who stirred my heart toward missions. Our church truly earned the slogan our pastor created: “The warmhearted church on Coldwater Road.” It wasn’t perfect, but we were a family. Since that day, I’ve continued attending church (even when it was hard to find the right one), and I’ve been encouraged and have grown in my faith as a result.

Just as we do today, believers in Jesus in the early church needed support and encouragement, and they understood the importance of meeting together with fellow believers (ACTS 2:46). They were a family. Together they built each other up when doing life and serving God became difficult. They gathered to pray, study Scripture, praise God, enjoy fellowship, and eat meals together (V. 42). As a result, God caused their numbers to grow (V. 47).

Finding a like-minded church may take time, but it’s vital. Life is difficult to face on our own, and that’s why God gave us families and communities. A church is a great place to build community.

마음의 중심

모스크바로 가르치러 갔을 때, 지하철을 타고 점심을 먹으러 가기로 했습니다. 객차 안에 서 있는데, 오전에 수업을 즐겁게 마쳤고 날씨도 좋아서 나도 모르게 휘파람을 불기 시작했습니다. 그러자 승객들이 나를 미친 사람처럼 빤히 쳐다보았습니다. 학교로 돌아와서 사무실 직원에게 사람들이 너무 침체되어 있고 의기소침해서 휘파람 부는 나를 그렇게 쳐다본 게 아닌가 생각한다고 말했습니다. 그러자 그 직원은 정중하게 말했습니다. “네, 여기 사람들의 삶이 힘든 것은 사실이지만, 그게 쳐다본 이유는 아닐 거예요. 이곳에서는 공공장소에서 휘파람을 부는 것이 무례하게 여겨지기 때문입니다.”

우리는 바로 그 상황과는 전혀 무관할 지도 모르는 외부 요인들에 근거하여 사람들에 대해 추정하곤 합니다. 이 사실은 장차 이스라엘의 왕으로 다윗이 선택된 이야기를 생각해보면 도움이 됩니다. 사무엘 선지자는 이새의 맏아들을 보고 속으로 생각했습니다. “여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다” (사무엘상 16:6). 그러나 하나님은 사무엘에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라”(7절).

사람의 외모를 보고 판단하면 잘못된 결론으로 이어질 수 있습니다. 판단은 하나님께 맡겨드리는 것이 좋습니다. 그분은 마음의 중심을 보시기 때문입니다.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER

On a teaching trip to Moscow, I decided to take the subway to get lunch. Standing in the subway car, I started whistling simply because I felt good after an enjoyable morning teaching and the day was pleasant. The passengers stared at me like I was insane. When I got back to the school, I told one of the office workers that the people were so discouraged and downhearted they stared when I whistled. She politely informed me, “Yes, their lives are very hard, but that isn’t why they stared. They stared because it’s rude to whistle in public here.”

When we make assumptions, we base them on external factors that may not have any bearing on the moment. It’s helpful to recall the story of David’s selection as future king of Israel. As the prophet Samuel considered Jesse’s eldest son, he thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord” (1 SAMUEL 16:6). But God told Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (V. 7).

Basing judgments on appearances will lead to wrong conclusions. We do well to let God do the judging. He sees the heart of the matter.

내가 즐겨 보는 착시 그림책 중 하나는 그림들이 내 눈을 감쪽같이 속여서 언제나 나를 놀라게 합니다. 예를 들어, 길이가 같은 두 선이 서로 다른 길이로 보인다거나, 네 개의 계단이 끊임없이 이어지는 고리처럼 보이는 그 유명한 “불가능한 계단” 같은 그림이 그렇습니다. 이런 그림들을 보다 보면, 우리가 사물을 항상 있는 그대로 보지 못한다는 사실을 깨닫게 되어 조금은 당혹 스럽기도 합니다.

그러나 우리를 속이는 것은 시각만이 아닙니다. 우리는 세상의 기만적인 주장들에 매일같이 노출되면서, 하나님의 자녀라는 우리의 정체성에 대해서도 간혹 환상에 빠지곤 합니다. 작가 헨리 나우웬은 이런 글을 썼습니다. “예수님은 성공, 인기, 권력을 바탕으로 한 정체성은 거짓된 정체성, 곧 환상임을 선포하시기 위해 오셨다!”

하나님의 아낌없는 사랑 덕분에 가능해진 우리의 참된 정체성은, 우리가 예수님을 구주로 영접할 때 비로소 “하나님의 자녀”가 된다는 사실입니다 (요한1서 3:1). 요한 사도가 깨달았듯이, 때때로 “우리 마음이 우리를 책망할 때”(20절)가 있어 하나님의 사랑을 의심하거나, 우리가 정말로 하나님께 속한 존재인지 묻기 시작합니다. 그러나 “하나님은 우리 마음보다 크시고 모든 것을 아십니다”(20절). 해로운 환상에 속지 말고, 우리가 하나님의 사랑 받는 자녀라는 진리를 믿으십시오.

CHILDREN OF GOD

One of my favorite books of optical illusions always astounds me as the pictures deceive my eyes—like one with two lines of the same length appearing to be different sizes, or the famous “impossible staircase” in which four flights of stairs seem to link in a continuous loop. It can also be a little disconcerting to realize we don’t always see things as they truly are.

But it’s not only our eyes that deceive us. We can sometimes believe illusions about our identity as God’s children when we’re bombarded daily with the world’s deceptive claims. Author Henri Nouwen wrote, “Jesus came to announce to us that an identity based on success, popularity and power is a false identity—an illusion!”

Our true identity, possible because of God’s lavish love, is that when we receive Jesus as our Savior we become “children of God” (1 JOHN 3:1). As the apostle John recognized, sometimes “our hearts condemn us” (V. 20), and we begin to doubt God’s love or even question if we truly belong to Him. However, “God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything” (V. 20). Instead of being deceived by damaging illusions, we can believe the truth that we are God’s beloved children.

Whatever illusions you may encounter about your identity today, hold fast to the truth that you’re God’s beloved child.

하나님의 구원 계획

한 아버지가 크루즈선을 타고 여행하던 중, 4층 갑판에서 자신의 다섯 살 난 딸이 바다로 떨어졌다는 것을 깨닫고는 딸을 구하기 위해 망설임 없이 약 40피트(12m) 아래의 바다로 몸을 던졌습니다. 그는 구조팀이 두 사람을 안전하게 배로 데려올 때까지 10분이 넘는 시간 동안 딸을 꼭 붙잡은 채 물 위에서 버텼습니다. 이 아버지는 딸이 위험에 처했다는 말을 듣자마자 딸을 구하기 위해 자신의 모든 것을 걸었던 것입니다.

GOD’S RESCUE PLAN

When a father learned his five-year-old daughter had fallen overboard from the fourth deck of the cruise ship they were on, he plunged into the ocean forty feet below to rescue her. He held on to his daughter while treading water for more than ten minutes before the ship’s rescue team brought them safely back on board. As soon as the father heard his daughter was in trouble, he risked everything to save her.

All throughout the Bible, we read how our heavenly Father’s love compelled Him to give His all to rescue us from drowning in our sin. God first declared His divine rescue plan in the garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve were tempted by the serpent and sinned, God cursed the serpent and said, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (GENESIS 3:15). This verse refers to the spiritual battle between Satan and God’s children and how at His appointed time God would send His Son, Jesus, to redeem the world through His Son’s sacrificial death and resurrection.

God has been ready to save us long before we realized we needed His help. Whenever we feel like we’re sinking in an ocean of sin, we can be encouraged that Jesus is our divine lifeline. We can cry out to Him. He will rescue and restore us.

하나님의 나라를 구하라

어린 손자가 우리 새 집에서 하룻밤을 보내게 되었습니다. 그 아이에게는 익숙하지 않은 침대였습니다. 포근한 이불과 그 위로 쳐 준 공룡 텐트 안에서 함께 책을 읽을 때는 신이 나서 즐겁게 웃었지만, 막상 잠잘 시간이 되자 손자가 눈을 크게 뜨고 걱정했습니다. “제가 밤에 할머니가 필요하면 어떻게 찾아요?” 그때 한 가지 아이디어가 떠올라서 옷장에 있던 선물용 리본을 꺼냈습니다. 우리는 그 아이의 침대에서부터 방바닥을 지나 복도를 따라 내 방까지 쭉 이어지도록 리본을 풀어서 연결했습니다. “걱정하지 말아라.” 내가 말했습니다. “밤에 내가 필요하면 이 줄을 따라오면 나를 찾을 수 있을 거야!” 그 말을 듣자 손자의 얼굴이 환하게 밝아졌습니다.

마태복음 6장에서 예수님께서는 우리가 무엇을 먹고 무엇을 마실지, 또 몸을 위하여 무엇을 입을지 염려하는 우리의 고충에 대해 단호하게 말씀하십니다 (25절). “염려”라는 헬라어 단어의 어원은 마음이 두 방향, 즉 믿음의 방향과 자기 자신을 의지하는 방향으로 나누어지는 것을 의미합니다. 33절에서 예수님은 염려에 대한 해결책을 주십니다. “너희는 먼저 하나님의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라.” 이것은 그분의 마음으로 곧장 이어지는 오직 하나의 방향을 택하고 따르라는 도전입니다.

각종 염려로 힘들어할 때, 우리는 하나님께서 모든 필요를 채워주실 것을 믿고, 하나님의 나라와 하나님의 길, 하나님의 임재로 우리를 안내하는 그 “줄” 을 따라갈 수 있습니다.

SEEKING GOD’S KINGDOM

My young grandson was spending the night in our new home, in a bed unfamiliar to him. He giggled with excitement as we read books under the dinosaur tent I’d pitched atop his cozy comforter, but when it was time to sleep, his eyes widened with worry. “How will I find you if I need you?” he asked. An idea emerged, and I grabbed a roll of ribbon from the gift wrap stash in the closet. Together we unspooled it from his bed, onto the floor, down the hall, and into my bedroom. “Don’t worry,” I said. “If you need me in the night, follow the string and you’ll find me!” He beamed in response.

In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks straight to our struggle with worry about what we’ll eat and drink, about our body and what we’ll wear (V. 25). The Greek root of the word translated “worry” means to be torn in two directions—the direction of faith versus selfreliance. In verse 33, Jesus offers the solution to worry: “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” It’s a challenge to us to choose and follow the one direction that leads straight to His heart.

When we struggle with worries, we can follow the “string” that directs us to God’s kingdom, His ways, and His presence, knowing that He will provide all we need.

하나님을 바라보라

엘리스는 거의 공황상태에 빠졌습니다. 책의 편집본 마감일이 다음날 이었는데, 프린터가 사진들을 인식하지 못한 것입니다. 이것을 해결하려면 며칠이 걸릴 수도 있었습니다.

"걱정하지마." 남편 샘이 말했습니다. “하나님께 도와달라고 기도하자. 그러고 밤새 작업하면 돼. 이 소프트웨어가 사진들을 빨리 수정하는 데 도움이 될 거야.”

남편과 함께 기도하고 나니까 엘리스의 마음이 평안해지기 시작했습니다. ‘계속 하나님만 바라보자.’ 스스로에게 말했습니다. 하나님께서 주신 마음의 평안과 남편의 실질적인 조언 덕분에 엘리스는 다시 작업에 착수했고, 제시간에 작업을 마칠 수 있었습니다.

이 과정에서 엘리스는 예루살렘 성벽 재건이라는 엄청난 과업을 수행하던 이스라엘 백성들을 떠올렸습니다(느헤미야 4장). 일 자체도 벅찼지만, 적들은 그들을 조롱하고 공사를 방해하려고 음모를 꾸몄습니다. 그러나 느헤미야는 이스라엘 백성들에게 계속해서 하나님을 바라보라고 독려했습니다. “우리 힘 으로는 이 성벽을 건축하지 못하리라”고 유다 백성들이 말했으나 느헤미야는 “지극히 크시고 두려우신 주를 기억하라”(10, 14절)고 말했습니다. 그리고 사람 들을 배치하여 성벽을 쌓으며 침략자들을 경계하도록 준비했고 지도자들이 그들 뒤에서 지원하도록 했습니다(16절). 또한 백성들에게 “우리 하나님이 우리를 위하여 싸우시리라”(20절)고 격려했습니다.

우리가 감당하기 어려운 도전에 직면할 때마다, 도움과 힘을 주시는 하나님을 바라봅시다. 우리는 실질적인 해결책을 찾을 수 있는 지혜를 구하며 기도하고, 필요한 조치를 취하며, 어떠한 결과가 나오든 하나님을 의지할 수 있습니다.

LOOK TO GOD

Elise felt the panic rising. The book layout was due the next day, but the printer had rejected the photos. It could take days to sort it out.

“Don’t worry,” said her husband, Sam. “Let’s ask God for help. Then we’ll work through the night. This software might help us fix the photos quickly.”

As they prayed, Elise started to feel more assured. Just keep looking to God, she told herself. With this God-given peace of mind and Sam’s practical tip, she went to work—and completed the task in time.

As she did so, Elise recalled the Israelites’ mammoth task of rebuilding their city wall (NEHEMIAH 4). As if it wasn’t difficult enough, enemies mocked them and conspired to sabotage their work. But Nehemiah encouraged them to keep looking to God. “By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall,” Judah said, but Nehemiah replied, “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome” (VV. 10, 14 ESV). Then he deployed the men to work on the wall and guard against attackers, with leaders behind them (V. 16). He also encouraged them, saying, “Our God will fight for us” (V. 20).

Whenever we face overwhelming challenges, let’s keep looking to God for help and strength. We can pray for wisdom to find practical solutions, take the necessary steps, and trust in God for the outcome—whatever it might be.
