번창할 시간

지난 봄에 나는 집 뒷문 곁에 있는 장미나무를 베어버리려고 마음먹었습니다. 우리가 그 집에서 3년을 사는 동안 그 나무는 꽃을 제대로 피우지도 못했고 이제는 꽃도 맺지 못하는 가지들이 온 사방으로 뻗어나가고 있었습니다.

그러다가 좀 바빠진 관계로 정원일이 지연되었습니다. 그런데 그것이 다행이었습니다. 불과 몇 주 후에 그 나무는 지금까지와는 전혀 다르게 꽃을 활짝 피우기 시작했습니다. 향기가 가득한 커다란 하얀 꽃들이 수백 개나 뒷문을 넘어 뒤뜰에 가득히 피었고 땅바닥에는 아름다운 꽃잎들이 가득 뿌려졌습니다.

나는 장미나무가 이렇게 회복된 모습을 보며 누가복음 13:6-9에 나오는 예수님의 무화과나무 비유를 생각했습니다. 이스라엘에서는 무화과나무를 심고 열매를 맺을 때까지 3년을 기다리는 것이 관습이었습니다. 그래도 열매를 맺지 못하면 잘라버리고 그 땅에 다른 것을 심었습니다. 예수님의 비유에서 과수원지기는 주인에게 어떤 한 나무가 과실을 맺도록 1년을 더 참아달라고 부탁합니다. 그 비유의 전후 관계를 보면(1-5절), 이스라엘 백성들은 그들이 살아야 할 도리대로 살지 않았고, 하나님은 그들을 마땅히 심판하실 수도 있었지만, 참으시고 그들이 하나님께로 돌아와 죄를 용서 받고 활짝 필 시간을 더 주셨다는 것입니다.

하나님은 모두가 번창하기를 원하시며 그렇게 하라고 시간을 더 주셨습니다. 우리가 아직도 믿음을 찾아 나아가고 있든지, 아니면 믿지 않는 가족과 친구들을 위해 기도하고 있든지, 그분의 오래 참으심은 우리 모두에게 좋은 소식입니다.

Time to Flourish

Last spring I decided to cut down the rose bush by our back door. In the three years we’d lived in our home, it hadn’t produced many flowers, and its ugly, fruitless branches were now creeping in all directions.

But life got busy, and my gardening plan got delayed. It was just as well—only a few weeks later that rose bush burst into bloom like I’d never seen before. Hundreds of big white flowers, rich in perfume, hung over the back door, flowed into our yard, and showered the ground with beautiful petals.

My rose bush’s revival reminded me of Jesus’s parable of the fig tree in Luke 13:6–9. In Israel, it was customary to give fig trees three years to produce fruit. If they didn’t, they were cut down so the soil could be better used. In Jesus’s story, a gardener asks his boss to give one particular tree a fourth year to produce. In context (VV 1–5), the parable implies this: the Israelites hadn’t lived as they should, and God could justly judge them. But God is patient and had given extra time for them to turn to Him, be forgiven, and bloom.

God wants all people to flourish and has given extra time so that they can. Whether we are still journeying toward faith or are praying for unbelieving family and friends, His patience is good news for all of us. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

행함이 있는 믿음

친구가 장을 보기 위해 운전해 가던 중, 길가를 따라 걸어가는 한 여인을 보고는 차를 세워 태워줘야겠다고 생각했습니다. 친구는 차에 탄 그 여인으로부터 버스값이 없어서 이렇게 무덥고 습한 날씨에 몇 마일을 걸어서 집으로 가고 있었다는 이야기를 듣고 마음이 슬펐습니다. 그 여인은 이렇게 먼 거리를 걸어서 집에 가고 있었을 뿐 아니라, 그날 아침에도 새벽 4시까지 직장에 가느라 몇 시간을 걸었던 것입니다.

내 친구는 오늘의 상황에서 차를 태워주는 것으로 “행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라”(17절)고 하며 행함으로 믿음을 보이라고 한 야고보의 교훈을 실천했습니다. 야고보는 교회가 과부와 고아를 돌보는 일에 관심을 가지며(야고보서 1:27), 또한 교인들이 빈 말이 아니라 사랑의 행실로 믿음을 실행할 것을 원했습니다.

우리는 행함이 아니라 믿음으로 구원 받습니다. 그러나 다른 사람을 사랑하며 그들의 필요를 채워줄 때 우리가 믿음의 삶을 사는 것입니다. 차를 태워준 내 친구처럼, 우리 모두 이 인생 여정을 함께 걸어가면서 우리의 도움이 필요한 사람들을 향하여 우리의 눈이 열려져 있기를 바랍니다.

Faith in Action

As a friend drove to the grocery store, she noticed a woman walking along the side of the road and felt she should turn the car around and offer her a ride. When she did, she was saddened to hear that the woman didn’t have money for the bus so was walking home many miles in the hot and humid weather. Not only was she making the long journey home, but she had also walked several hours that morning to arrive at work by 4 a.m.

By offering a ride, my friend put into practice in a modern setting James’s instruction for Christians to live out their faith with their deeds: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (V 17). He was concerned that the church take care of the widows and the orphans (JAMES 1:27), and he also wanted them to rely not on empty words but to act on their faith with deeds of love.

We are saved by faith, not works, but we live out our faith by loving others and caring for their needs. May we, like my friend who offered the ride, keep our eyes open for those who might need our help as we walk together in this journey of life. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

끝나지 않은 일들

위대한 예술가 미켈란젤로는 죽을 때에 많은 미완성작품들을 남겼습니다. 하지만 그의 조각상들 중 네 가지는 완성할 계획이 전혀 없었던 작품들입니다. 그 작품들은 ‘수염을 기른 노예’, ‘아틀라스 노예’, ‘깨어 있는 노예’, 그리고 ‘어린 노예’ 인데, 그것들은 완성되지 않은 것처럼 보이지만 미켈란젤로가 의도했던 그대로를 보여주는 작품들입니다. 그는 영원히 노예의 굴레에 얽매여 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 보여주고 싶었던 것입니다.

미켈란젤로는 사슬에 매인 조각상을 만들지 않고 그 조각상을 쪼아 만든 원래의 돌 안에 갇혀 있게 만들었습니다. 몸이 돌에서 나오고는 있지만 완전히 빠져나오지 못하고 있습니다. 그 조각상들은 근육에 힘이 들어가 있지만, 결코 자신을 자유롭게 할 수 없습니다.

그 노예 조각상의 모습이 나와 같다는 것을 바로 느낍니다. 그들이 처한 곤경은 내가 죄 때문에 몸부림치는 것과 다르지 않습니다. 나도 나 자신을 자유롭게 하지 못합니다. “내 지체 속에 있는 죄의 법에 사로잡힌 죄수”(로마서 7:23)처럼, 나도 그 조각상들처럼 갇혀 있습니다. 아무리 열심히 노력해도 나는 나를 바꿀 수 없습니다. 하지만 하나님께 감사하게도, 당신과 나는 미완성 작품으로 남아 있지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 천국에 갈 때까지는 온전해지지 않겠지만, 우리가 그때까지 변화시키시는 성령님의 역사를 받아들일 때 그분이 우리를 변화시켜주십니다. 하나님은 우리 안에서 시작하신 착한 일을 이루어주시겠다고 약속하십니다(빌립보서 1:6).

Unfinished Works

At his death, the great artist Michelangelo left many unfinished projects. But four of his sculptures were never meant to be completed. The Bearded Slave, the Atlas Slave, the Awakening Slave, and the Young Slave, though they appear unfinished, are just as Michelangelo intended them to be. The artist wanted to show what it might feel like to be forever enslaved.

Rather than sculpting figures in chains, Michelangelo made figures stuck in the very marble out of which they are carved. Bodies emerge from the stone, but not completely. Muscles flex, but the figures are never able to free themselves.

My empathy with the slave sculptures is immediate. Their plight is not unlike my struggle with sin. I am unable to free myself: like the sculptures I am stuck, “a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me” (ROM 7:23). No matter how hard I try, I cannot change myself. But thanks be to God, you and I will not remain unfinished works. We won’t be complete until heaven, but in the meantime as we
welcome the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, He changes us. God promises to finish the good work He has begun in us (PHIL 1:6). - AMY PETERSON

다섯 손가락 기도

기도는 하나님과의 대화이지 어떤 공식이 아닙니다. 하지만 가끔 어떤 “방법”을 사용하여 우리의 기도시간을 새롭게 할 필요가 있습니다. 기도할 때 시편이나 (주기도문과 같은) 성경의 다른 구절들을 읊거나, ACTS (Adoration 경배, Confession 고백, Thanksgiving 감사, Supplication 간구) 방법을 사용할 수 있습니다 . 나는 최근 다른 사람들을 위해 기도할 때의 지침으로 아래와 같은 “다섯 손가락 기도”를 알게 되었습니다.

•손을 쥘 때 엄지가 몸에서 가장 가깝습니다. 그러므로 먼저 당신이 사랑하는 가장 가까운 사람들을 위해 기도하십시오 (빌립보서 1:3-5).
•검지는 가리키는 손가락입니다. 성경교사나 설교자들, 그리고 아이들을 가르치는 이들을 위해 기도하십시오 (데살로니가전서 5:25).
•그 다음 손가락은 가장 긴 손가락입니다. 그것은 나라의 지도자들과 직장의 상사들을 위해 기도할 것을 상기시켜 줍니다 (디모데전서 2:1-2).
•네 번째 손가락은 보통 가장 약한 손가락입니다. 어려움에 처해 있거나 아픔을 겪는 이들을 위해 기도하십시오(야고보서 5:13-16).

Five-Finger Prayers

Prayer is a conversation with God, not a formula. Yet sometimes we might need to use a “method” to freshen up our prayer time. We can pray the Psalms or other Scriptures (such as The Lord’s Prayer), or use the ACTS method (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication). I recently came across this “Five-Finger Prayer” to use as a guide when praying for others:

• When you fold your hands, the thumb is nearest you. So begin by praying for those closest to you—your loved ones (PHIL 1:3–5).
• The index finger is the pointer. Pray for those who teach—Bible teachers and preachers, and those who teach children (1 THESS 5:25).
• The next finger is the tallest. It reminds you to pray for those in authority over you—national and local leaders, and your supervisor at work (1 TIM 2:1–2).
• The fourth finger is usually the weakest. Pray for those who are in trouble or who are suffering (JAMES 5:13–16).
• Then comes your little finger. It reminds you of your smallness in relation to God’s greatness. Ask Him to supply your needs (PHIL 4:6, 19).

Whatever method you use, just talk with your Father. He wants to hear what’s on your heart. - ANNE CETAS

매우 좋다!

가끔 마치 하나의 주제가 계속 이어지는 것 같이 느껴지는 날이 있습니다. 최근에 나에게 그런 날이 있었습니다. 목사님이 창세기 1장에 관한 설교를 시작할 때 꽃들이 활짝 피는 것을 저속 촬영한, 숨 막히게 아름다운 사진들을 2분간 보여주었습니다. 그리고 집에 와서는 소셜미디어를 통해 수많은 꽃 사진들을 보았습니다. 나중에 숲길을 걷는데 연령초, 눈동이나물, 야생붓꽃 같은 봄철 야생화들이 주위를 둘러싸고 있었습니다.

하나님은 천지창조 셋째 날 꽃과 다양한 여러 식물들을 (그리고 이것들이 자랄 마른 땅도) 창조하셨습니다. 그리고 바로 그날 두 번이나 보시기에 “좋았더라”(창세기 1:10,12)고 하셨습니다. 하나님이 “좋았더라” 라고 두 번 말씀하신 또 다른 유일한 날은 여섯 번째 날입니다(25,31절). 사실 하나님이 사람을 만드시고 그의 작품이 완성된 이 날, 하나님은 그분이 만드신 만물들을 돌아보시고 “보시기에 매우 좋았더라”라고 하셨습니다.

천지창조 이야기에서 우리는 자신의 창조물을 기뻐하는 창조주 하나님을 보는데, 그분은 창조하는 바로 그 일 자체에서도 기쁨을 누린 듯이 보입니다. 그렇지 않다면 왜 그렇게 다채롭고 놀라운 다양성을
가진 세상을 계획하신 걸까요? 그리고 하나님은 마지막을 위해 최고의 것을 남겨두셨다가 “자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하셨습니다”(27절). 하나님의 형상을 지닌 우리는 그분의 아름다운
솜씨를 통해 축복과 영감을 받은 자들입니다.

Very Good!

Some days seem to have a theme running through them. Recently I had one of those days. Our pastor began his sermon on Genesis 1 with two minutes of breathtaking, time-lapse photography of blossoming flowers. Then, at home, a scroll through social media revealed numerous posts of flowers. Later on a walk in the woods, the wildflowers of spring surrounded us—trilliums, marsh marigolds, and wild iris.

God created flowers and every other variety of vegetation (and dry ground to grow in), on the third day of creation. And twice on that day, God pronounced it “good” (GEN 1:10, 12). On only one other day of creation—the sixth—did God make that double pronouncement of “good” (VV 25, 31). In fact, on this day when He created humans and His masterpiece was complete, He looked over all He had made and “saw that it was very good!” ( NLT ).

In the creation story, we see a Creator God who delighted in His creation—and seemed to take joy in the very act of creating. Why else design a world with such colorful and amazing variety? And He saved the best for last when He “created mankind in his own image” (V 27). As His image-bearers we are blessed and inspired by His beautiful handiwork. - ALYSON KIEDA

하나님의 말씀 속에 잠기기

우리 아들 재비어가 막 걷기 시작한 아기 때에 몬테레이만 수족관으로 가족 소풍을 간 적이 있었습니다. 수족관에 들어서자, 나는 공중에 매달린 큰 조형물을 가리키며 “저기 봐, 향유고래가 있네.”라고 말했습니다.

재비어의 눈이 동그래지며 “거대하네요.” 라고 말했습니다.

남편이 나를 돌아보며 “얘가 어떻게 그 말을 알지?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 “우리가 이야기하는 걸 들었겠죠.” 라고 어깨를 으쓱이며 말했지만, 의도적으로 가르친 적이 전혀 없는 단어를 우리 아들이 흡수하고 있다는 사실에 적잖이 놀랐습니다.

신명기 6장에서 하나님은 그의 백성에게 의도적으로 젊은 세대들을 가르쳐 그들로 하여금 성경을 알고 그에 순종하도록 하라고 권면하고 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님을 아는 지식이 늘어날수록 그들과 자녀들은 더욱 하나님을 경외하게 되고, 그분을 친밀히 알며 그분을 온전히 사랑하고 순종하며 따를 때 주어지는 보상을 더욱 누리게 될 것이었습니다(2-5절).

의도적으로 성경말씀을 우리의 마음과 생각 속에 채워두면(6절), 일상생활 속에서 하나님의 사랑과 진리를 자녀들과 나눌 준비를 잘 하는 것이 됩니다(7절). 또한 우리가 먼저 본을 보이며 지도하면 젊은 세대들이 변치 않는 하나님의 진리의 권위와 타당성을 인정하고 존중할 수 있도록 그들을 준비시키고 격려할 수 있습니다(8-9절).

하나님의 말씀이 우리의 마음에서 우리의 입으로 자연스럽게 흘러나올 때, 우리는 강력한 믿음의 유산을 여러 세대에 걸쳐 전해줄수 있습니다(4:9).

Soaking Up God’s Word

When our son Xavier was a toddler, we took a family trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. As we entered the building, I pointed to a large sculpture suspended from the ceiling. “Look. A humpback whale.” Xavier’s eyes widened. “Enormous,” he said.

My husband turned to me. “How does he know that word?”

“He must have heard us say it.” I shrugged, amazed that our toddler had soaked up vocabulary we’d never intentionally taught him.

In Deuteronomy 6, God encouraged His people to be intentional about teaching younger generations to know and obey the Scriptures. As the Israelites increased their knowledge of God, they and their children would be more likely to grow in reverence of Him and to enjoy the rewards that come through knowing Him intimately, loving Him completely, and following Him obediently (VV 2–5).

By intentionally saturating our hearts and our minds with Scripture (V 6), we will be better prepared to share God’s love and truth with children during our everyday activities (V 7). Leading by example, we can equip and encourage young people to recognize and respect the authority and relevance of God’s unchanging truth (VV 8–9).

As God’s words flow naturally from our hearts and out of our mouths, we can leave a strong legacy of faith to be passed down from generation to generation (4:9). - XOCHITL DIXON

섬기는 자로 여기에

우리 교회에서 새로운 리더들을 임명할 때가 되었습니다. 섬기는 리더로서의 역할을 상징하기 위해서 교회의 장로님들이 기억에 남을 세족식을 행하였습니다. 목사님을 포함한 각 리더는 회중들이 보는 앞에서 서로의 발을 씻어주었습니다.

그 세족식은 요한복음 13장에 기록된바 예수님께서 우리를 위해 보여주신 본을 따른 것입니다. 최후의 만찬이 있던 그날 저녁에 예수님은 “저녁 잡수시던 자리에서 일어나......대야에 물을 떠서 제자들의 발을 씻으셨습니다”(요한복음 13:4-5) 나중에 예수님은 왜 이 일을 하셨는지 설명하시면서, “종이 주인보다 크지 못하고 보냄을 받은 자가 보낸 자보다 크지 못하다”(16절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 또한 “나는 섬기는 자로 너희 중에 있노라”(누가복음 22:27)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

만약 그런 비천한 일을 하는 것이 예수님의 품위을 떨어뜨리는 것이 아니라면, 다른 이들을 섬기는 일도 우리의 품위를 떨어뜨리지 않습니다. 주님은 정말 우리 모두에게 놀라운 모범을 보여주셨습니다.
진실로 주님은 “섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기러”(마가복음 10:45) 오셨습니다. 주님은 우리에게 리더이자 종이 되는 것이 무엇을 뜻하는지 보여주셨습니다. 그것은 바로 섬기는 분 예수님입니다.

Here to Serve

It was time for our church to commission a new group of leaders. To symbolize their roles as servant-leaders, the church elders participated in a memorable foot-washing ceremony. Each of the leaders—including the pastor—washed each other’s feet as the congregation observed them.

What they did that day was modeled for us by Jesus Christ, as recorded in John 13. In that incident, which happened at what is called the Last Supper, Jesus “got up from the meal, . . . poured
water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet” (JOHN 13:4–5). Later, as Jesus was explaining to His disciples why He had done this, He said, “No servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (V 16). He also said, “I am among you as one who serves” (LUKE 22:27).

If it is not below Jesus’s dignity to do such a lowly task, it is not below any of us to serve others. What an amazing example He set for all of us. 합주

손녀딸의 학교 악단 연주회에 간 적이 있었는데, 11살, 12살 된 아이들이 합주를 얼마나 잘하던지 큰 감명을 받았습니다. 만약 각자가 독주를 하고 싶어 했다면, 악단 전체가 함께 만들었던 그런 멋진 연주는 개개인으로서는 불가능했을 것입니다. 목관악기, 금관악기, 타악기 모두 자기들이 맡은 역할을 잘 해냈고, 그 결과는 정말 아름다운 음악이었지요!

바울은 로마의 교인들에게 다음과 같이 썼습니다. “우리 많은 사람이 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되었느니라 우리에게 주신 은혜대로 받은 은사가 각각 다르니”(로마서 12:5-6). 바울이 언급한 은사 중에는 예언과 섬김, 가르침, 위로, 구제, 다스림, 긍휼 등이 있습니다(7-8절). 각 은사는 모든 사람들의 유익을 위하여 자유롭게 사용되어야 합니다(고린도전서 12:7).

영어로 ‘in concert’는 “디자인이나 계획이 일치하는 것; 연합된 행동; 조화나 일치” 등의 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님의 자녀가 된 우리를 위해 주님께서 계획해 놓으신 것입니다. “형제의 사랑으로 서로 다정하게 대하며, 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하십시오”(10절, 새번역). 목표는 경쟁이 아니라 협력입니다.

어떤 의미에서, 우리는 우리를 보고 듣는 세상이라는 “무대”에 매일 서 있습니다. 하나님의 악단에는 독주자가 없으며, 모든 악기가 하나하나 다 중요합니다. 우리 각자가 맡은 부분을 다른 사람들과 연합하여 연주할 때 최고의 음악이 나오게 됩니다.

Playing in Concert

During our granddaughter’s school band concert, I was impressed by how well this group of 11- and 12-year-olds played together. If each of them had wanted to be a solo performer, they could not have achieved individually what the band did collectively. The woodwinds, brass, and percussion sections all played their parts and the result was beautiful music!

To the followers of Jesus in Rome, Paul wrote, “In Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (ROM 12:5–6). Among the gifts Paul mentioned are prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership, and mercy (VV 7–8). Each gift is to be exercised freely for the good of all (1 COR 12:7).

One definition of in concert is “agreement in design or plan; combined action; harmony or accord.” That’s the Lord’s plan for us as His children through faith in Jesus Christ. “Be devoted to one another
in love. Honor one another above yourselves” (V 10). The goal is cooperation, not competition.

In a sense, we are “on stage” before a watching and listening world every day. There are no soloists in God’s concert band, but every instrument is essential. The music is best when we each play our part in unity with others. - DAVID MCCASLAND

침묵

구호물자 차량들이 덜컹거리며 마을의 낡은 오두막집사이를 지나가자 놀란 닭들이 사방으로 흩어지고, 맨발의 아이들이 차량들을 물끄러미 바라보았습니다. 비로 인해 유실된 이 “도로” 에서 차량은 보기 드물었습니다.

갑자기 수송대의 시야에 담으로 둘러싸인 대저택이 모습을 드러냈습니다. 그것은 시장의 집이었는데 거기 살고 있지는 않았습니다. 그 도시 사람들은 생필품조차 부족한 상태인데도 그는 멀리 떨어진 도시에서 호사와 여유를 누리고 있었습니다.

우리는 그런 불공평함에 화가 납니다. 하나님의 선지자도 화를 내었습니다. 하박국은 무서운 압제를 보고는 하나님께 물었습니다. “여호와여 내가 부르짖어도 주께서 듣지 아니하시니 어느 때까지리이까” (하박국 1:2). 그러나 이미 알고 계신 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “화 있을진저 자기 소유 아닌 것을 모으는 자여......자기 집을 위하여 부당한 이익을 취하는 자에게 화 있을진저”(2:6,9). 하나님의 심판이 다가오고 있었던 것입니다!

우리는 하나님께서 다른 이들을 심판하시는 것을 환영합니다. 그러나 하박국에는 우리를 잠시 멈추게 하는 하나의 요점이 있습니다. “오직 여호와는 그 성전에 계시니 온 땅은 그 앞에서 잠잠할지니라”(2:20). 성경은 ‘온 땅’이라 말하고 있습니다. 억압하는 자들과 억압 받는 자들 모두 말입니다. 때로는 겉보기에 침묵하고 계시는 것 같은 하나님에 대한 우리의 적절한 반응은......침묵입니다!

왜 침묵해야 할까요? 그것은 우리 자신의 영적 빈곤을 우리가 쉽게 간과하기 때문입니다. 우리는 침묵함으로써 거룩하신 하나님 앞에서 우리의 죄성을 인식하게 됩니다.

하박국은 하나님을 신뢰하는 법을 배웠고 우리 또한 배울 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님의 방법을 다 알지는 못하지만, 하나님이 선하시다는 것을 압니다. 하나님의 통제와 시기를 벗어나는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.

Silence

Skittish chickens scattered as relief trucks clattered past the weathered huts of the village. Barefoot children stared. Traffic on this rain-ravaged “road” was rare.

Suddenly, a walled mansion loomed into view of the convoy. It was the mayor’s house—although he didn’t live in it. His people lacked basic necessities, while he lounged in luxury in a distant city.

Such unfairness angers us. It angered God’s prophet too. When Habakkuk saw rampant oppression he asked, “How long, LORD , must I call for help, but you do not listen?” (HAB 1:2). But God had noticed, and He said, “Woe to him who piles up stolen goods . . . who builds his house by unjust gain!” (2:6, 9). Judgment was coming!

We welcome God’s judgment of others, but there’s a pivot point in Habakkuk that gives us pause: “The LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him” (2:20). All the earth. The oppressed along with oppressors. Sometimes the appropriate response to God’s seeming silence is . . . silence!

Why silence? Because we easily overlook our own spiritual poverty. Silence allows us to recognize our sinfulness in the presence of a holy God.

Habakkuk learned to trust God, and we can too. We don’t know all His ways, but we do know that He is good. Nothing is beyond His control and timing. - TIM GUSTAFSON

위로의 잔 나누기

한 친구가 손수 만든 도자기 잔 몇 개를 나에게 우편으로 보내주었습니다. 그런데 상자를 열어 보니 그 소중한 물건들이 운반되는 동안 손상되어 있었습니다. 잔들 중 하나가 깨어져 흙가루 덩어리 속에 큰 조각 몇 개와 작은 조각 여러 개로 흩어져 있었습니다. 남편이 부서진 조각들을 접착제로 다시 붙인 후에, 나는 흠집이 아름답게 새겨진 그 잔을 선반 위에 진열했습니다.

부서진 조각들을 붙여놓은 그 도자기 잔처럼, 나에게도 하나님이 허락하신 연단의 시간들 후에 여전히 굳세게 버틸수 있음을 입증해주는 흉터들이 있습니다. 주님께서 어떻게 내 삶에 역사하셨는지를
다른 사람들에게 이야기함으로써 고난 속에 있는 사람들을 도울 수 있다는 사실을 나는 그 위로의 잔을 통해 깨닫게 됩니다.

바울 사도는 “자비의 아버지시요 모든 위로의 하나님”(고린도후서 1:3)을 찬양합니다. 주님은 우리를 좀 더 주님과 닮게 하시려고 시련과 고통을 주십니다. 우리가 시련 당할 때 받는 주님의 위로는 우리의 힘든 시기에 주님께서 하신 일들을 사람들과 나눌 때 그들을 격려할 수 있는 능력이 됩니다(4절).

예수님이 당하신 고난을 생각할 때, 우리는 하나님이 우리의 경험을 사용하여 우리뿐 아니라 다른 이들도 더 강하게 만들어 인내와 오래 참음에 이르게 하시는 것(5-7절) 을 믿으며, 우리자신의 고통 속에서도 인내할 수 있는 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 우리도 바울처럼 주님이 그분의 영광을 위해 우리의 시련을 보상해주신다는 것을 알고 위로를 받을 수 있습니다. 우리는 주님의 위로의 잔을 나눔으로써 상처 받은 사람들에게 든든한 희망을 가져다줄 수 있습니다.

우리가 받은 하나님의 위로를 사람들과 나누면 그들도 하나님의 위로를 받게 된다.

Sharing a Cup of Comfort

A friend mailed me some of her homemade pottery. Upon opening the box, I discovered the precious items had been damaged during their journey. One of the cups had shattered into a few large pieces, a jumble of shards, and clumps of clay dust. After my husband glued the broken mess back together, I displayed the beautifully blemished cup on a shelf.

Like that pieced-together pottery, I have scars that prove I can still stand strong after the difficult times God’s brought me through. That cup of comfort reminds me that sharing how the Lord has worked in and through my life can help others during their times of suffering.

The apostle Paul praises God because He is the “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (2 COR 1:3). The Lord uses our trials and sufferings to make us more like Him. His comfort in our troubles equips us to encourage others as we share what He did for us during our time of need (V 4).

As we reflect on Christ’s suffering, we can be inspired to persevere in the midst of our own pain, trusting that God uses our experiences to strengthen us and others toward patient endurance (VV 5–7). Like Paul, we can be comforted in knowing that the Lord redeems our trials for His glory. We can share His cups of comfort and bring reassuring hope to the hurting. - XOCHITL DIXON
