안 보이게 하는 반지

그리스 철학자 플라톤(대략 기원전 427-348)은 사람 마음의 어두운 면에 빛을 비출 수 있는, 상상력이 풍부한 한 가지 방법을 생각해냈습니다. 그는 깊은 땅 밑에 묻혔던 금반지를 우연히 발견하게 된 한 목자의 이야기를 합니다. 어느 날 커다란 지진으로 고대 산지대의 무덤이 열리고 목자가 반지를 발견하게 됩니다. 그리고 그 반지는 끼는 사람이 원하면 안 보이도록 하는 마술적인 능력이 있음을 우연히 알게 됩니다. 보이지 않게 되는 것에 대해 생각해보면서 플라톤은 이런 질문을 제기했습니다. ‘만일 사람들이 잡히고 벌 받는 것을 걱정하지 않게 된다면, 과연 나쁜 짓을 안 하려 들까?’

요한복음에서는 예수님이 이에 대해 다르게 말씀하신 것을 봅니다. 선한 목자로 알려진 예수님은 마음이 그 하는 일을 숨기려고 어두움 아래 머물러있다고 말씀하십니다(요한복음 3:19-20). 주님은 우리를 정죄하기 위해 우리의 감추려는 열망에 관심을 두시는 것이 아니라, 주님을 통해 우리에게 구원을 주시는데 관심이 있으십니다(17절). 우리 마음의 목자로서 주님은 최악의 인간 본성을 빛으로 가져와 하나님이 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지를 보여주십니다(16절).

하나님은 그분의 자비로 우리를 어둠에서 불러내어 빛 가운데서 주님을 따르도록 초대하십니다.

Ring of Invisibility

The Greek philosopher Plato (c. 427–c. 348 bc) found an imaginative way of shining light on the dark side of the human heart. He told the story of a shepherd who innocently discovered a golden ring that had been hidden deep in the earth. One day a great earthquake opened up an ancient mountainside tomb and revealed the ring to the shepherd. By accident he also discovered that the ring had the magical ability to enable the wearer to become invisible at will. Thinking about invisibility, Plato raised this question: If people didn’t have to worry about being caught and punished, would they resist doing wrong?

In John’s gospel we find Jesus taking this idea in a different direction. There, Jesus, known as the Good Shepherd, speaks of hearts that stay in the cover of darkness to hide what they are doing (JOHN 3:19–20). He isn’t calling attention to our desire for cover-up to condemn us, but to offer us salvation through Him (V. 17). As the Shepherd of our hearts, He brings the worst of our human nature to light to show us how much God loves us (V. 16).

God in His mercy calls us out of our darkness and invites us to follow Him in the light. MART DEHAAN

완전한 출입권

몇 년 전에 친구가 프로골프 경기를 보러 가는데 나를 함께 초대해주었습니다. 처음으로 가보는 거라 나는 어떤 경험을 하게 될 지 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 그곳에 도착하여 선물과 경기에 관한 정보, 그리고 골프코스 지도를 받고 좀 놀라긴 했지만, 무엇보다 놀라웠던 것은 18번 그린 뒤의 VIP 텐트 출입권이 우리에게 주어진 것이었습니다. 그 안에는 무료 음식이 있었고 앉아 쉴 수도 있습니다. 나 혼자서로는 후히 대접해주는 그 텐트에 들어갈 수 없었을 것입니다. 그것은 오로지 내 친구 때문이었고, 그 친구를 통해서만 내가 온전히 출입할 수 있었던 것입니다.

우리만 남겨진 채로 있었다면 우리는 절망적으로 하나님으로부터 분리되어버렸을 것입니다. 그러나 예수님이 우리의 죄 값을 지시고 주님의 생명을 우리에게 주심으로 우리는 하나님께 다가갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 바울 사도는 “이제 교회로 말미암아......하나님의 각종 지혜를 알게 하려 하심이니”(에베소서 3:10)라고 썼습니다. 이 지혜는 우리에게 하나님 아버지께로 갈 수 있는 길을 만들어주신 그리스도 안에서 유대인과 이방인들을 하나 되게 해주었습니다. “우리가 그 안에서 그를 믿음으로 말미암아 담대함과 확신을 가지고 하나님께 나아감을 얻느니라”(12절).

우리가 예수님을 믿으면 우리는 가장 좋은 출입증을 받습니다. 그것은 우리를 사랑하시고 우리와 관계를 맺기 원하시는 하나님께 접근할 수 있는 출입증입니다.

Complete Access

A few years ago, a friend invited me to join him as a spectator at a pro golf tournament. Being a first-timer, I had no idea what to expect. When we arrived, I was surprised to receive gifts, information, and maps of the golf course. But what topped it all was that we gained access to a VIP tent behind the 18th green, where we had free food and a place to sit. I couldn’t have gained entry to the hospitality tent on my own though. The key was my friend; it was only through him that I had complete access.

Left to ourselves, we would all be hopelessly separated from God. But Jesus, who took our penalty, offers us His life and access to God. The apostle Paul wrote, “[God’s] intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known” (EPH. 3:10). This wisdom has brought Jew and Gentile together in Christ, who has made a way for us to come to God the Father. “Through faith in [Christ] we may approach God with freedom and confidence” (V. 12).

When we put our trust in Jesus, we receive the greatest access of all—access to the God who loves us and desires relationship with us. - BILL CROWDER

전심을 다하여!

갈렙은 “전심을 다하는” 사람이었습니다. 갈렙과 여호수아는 약속의 땅을 정탐하고 와서 모세와 백성들에게 보고한 열두 정탐꾼 가운데 속해 있었습니다. 갈렙은 “우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라”(민수기 13:30)라고 말했지만, 나머지 열 명은 그들이 이기지 못할 것이라고 말했습니다. 하나님의 약속에도 불구하고, 그들은 단지 장애물만 보았던 것입니다(31-33절).

그 열 사람은 백성들로 실망케 하고 하나님께 불평하도록 하여 광야에서 40년간 방황하도록 만들었습니다. 그러나 갈렙은 결코 단념하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 “내 종 갈렙은 그 마음이 그들과 달라서 나를
온전히 따랐은즉 그가 갔던 땅으로 내가 그를 인도하여 들이리니 그의 자손이 그 땅을 차지하리라”(14:24)라고 말씀하셨습니다. “그가(갈렙이) 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 온전히 좇았기에”(여호수아 14:14) 45년 후 갈렙이 85세 되던 때, 하나님이 약속을 지키셔서 그는 헤브론 도시를 기업으로 받게 되었습니다.

오랜 세월이 지난 후 한 율법사가 예수님께 “율법 중에 어느 계명이 크니이까”라고 물었습니다. 그때 예수님은 “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라 이것이 크고 첫째 되는 계명이요”(마태복음 22:35-38)라고 대답하셨습니다.

오늘도 갈렙은 우리에게 하나님은 우리의 전심을 다하는 사랑과 신뢰와 헌신을 받으시기에 합당하시다는 그의 확신을 전해주고 있습니다.

Wholehearted!

Caleb was a “wholehearted” person. He and Joshua were part of a twelve-man reconnaissance team that explored the Promised Land and gave a report to Moses and the people. Caleb said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (NUM. 13:30). But ten members of the team said they couldn’t possibly succeed. In spite of God’s promises, they saw only obstacles (VV. 31–33).

Ten men caused the people to lose heart and grumble against God, which led to forty years of wandering in the desert. But Caleb never quit. The Lord said, “Because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it” (14:24). Forty-five years later God honored His promise when Caleb, at the age of 85, received the city of Hebron “because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly” (JOSH. 14:14).

Centuries later an expert in the law asked Jesus, “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment” (MATT. 22:35–38).

Today Caleb is still inspiring us with his confidence in a God who deserves our wholehearted love, reliance, and commitment. - DAVID MCCASLAND

“미래에 있을 실제”의 세계

2002년에 자동차 사고로 열일곱 살이던 딸 멜리사를 잃은 뒤 많은 시간이 흘러갔음에도, 나는 때때로 “만약에......”라는 상상의 세계에 빠져들곤 합니다. 슬픔에 잠겨 자연스레 그 비극적인 6월의 어느 밤에 일어난 사고를 다시 그려보며, 나는 만약 다시 재구성할 수 있다면 멜이 안전하게 집에 올 수 있었을 여러 요인들을 생각합니다.

그러나 실상은 “만약에......”라는 곳은 우리 어느 누구에게도 좋은 장소가 아닙니다. 그곳은 후회와 비판의 장소이며, 소망이 없는 곳입니다. 실제로 슬픔이 있고 아픔이 계속되는 동안에도, “미래에 있을 실제”의 세계에 우리가 거한다면 삶은 더 나아지고 하나님이 영광을 받으십니다.

그 세계에서 우리는 소망과 격려, 위로를 찾을 수 있습니다. 우리에게는 멜리사가 예수님을 사랑하였기에 지금 “훨씬 더 좋은”(빌립보서 1:23) 곳에 있다는 분명한 소망(데살로니가전서 4:13)과 확신이 있습니다. 모든 위로의 하나님(고린도후서 1:3)이 우리와 함께 하셔서 도와주시고, 우리의 “환난 중에 만날 큰 도움”(시편 46:1)이 되어 주십니다. 그리고 종종 믿음의 동료들에게서도 격려를 받습니다.

우리 모두는 살면서 비극을 피하고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 우리가 고난을 당할 때 우리의 가장 큰 도움은 ‘미래에 있을 실제’의 세계에서 우리의 확실한 소망이 되어주시는 하나님을 신뢰함으로써 얻게 됩니다.

The Land of “What Is”

Even all these years after losing our seventeen-year-old daughter Melissa in a car accident in 2002, I sometimes find myself entering the world of “What If.” It’s easy, in grief, to reimagine the events of that tragic June evening and think of factors that—if rearranged—would have had Mell arriving safely home.

In reality, though, the land of “What If” is not a good place to be for any of us. It is a place of regret, second-guessing, and hopelessness. While the grief is real and the sadness endures, life is better and God is honored if we dwell in the world of “What Is.”

In that world, we can find hope, encouragement, and comfort. We have the sure hope (1 THESS. 4:13)—the assurance— that because Melissa loved Jesus she is in a place that is “better by far” (PHIL. 1:23). We have the helpful presence of the God of all comfort (2 COR. 1:3). We have God’s “ever present help in trouble” (PS. 46:1). And we often have the encouragement of fellow believers.

We all wish to avoid the tragedies of life. But when we do face hard times, our greatest help comes from trusting God, our sure hope in the land of What Is. DAVE BRANON

계속 달려가라

나는 ‘굉장한 경주’라는 텔레비전 프로그램을 좋아합니다. 이 리얼리티 쇼는 열 쌍의 남녀를 외국으로 보내어, 그곳에서 기차나 버스, 택시, 자전거를 이용하거나 걸어서 한 지점에서 다른 지점으로 이동하여 다음 과제에 대한 지침을 받게 하는 경주입니다. 이 시합의 목적은 한 커플이 다른 사람들보다 먼저 지정된 최종 목적지에 도착하게 하는 것인데, 우승 상금은 백만 불(약 12억 원)입니다.

바울 사도는 그리스도인의 생활을 경주에 비교하면서 자신이 아직 결승점에 도착하지 못했다고 시인했습니다. “형제들아 나는 아직 내가 잡은 줄로 여기지 아니하고 오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고
앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라” (빌립보서 3:13-14). 바울은 뒤돌아보지 않으면서 과거의 실패로 인한 죄의식이 자신을 짓누르지 못하도록 하였고, 현재의 성공으로 자만에 빠지지 않게 하였습니다. 바울은 예수님을 더욱더 닮아가려는 목표를 향해 계속 달려갔습니다.

우리도 같은 경주를 달리고 있습니다. 우리의 과거의 실패나 성공에 상관없이, 예수님을 더 닮아가려는 궁극적인 목표를 향해 계속 달려갑시다. 우리는 세상의 상급이 아니라 영원히 주님을 기뻐하는 궁극적인 상급을 위해 달리는 것입니다.

Press On

One of my favorite television programs is The Amazing Race. In this reality show, ten couples are sent to a foreign country where they must race, via trains, buses, cabs, bikes, and feet, from one point to another to get their instructions for the next challenge. The goal is for one couple to get to a designated finishing point before everyone else, and the prize is a million dollars.

The apostle Paul compared the Christian life to a race and admitted that he had not yet arrived at the finish line. “Brothers and sisters,” he said, “I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize” (PHIL. 3:13–14). Paul did not look back and allow his past failures to weigh him down with guilt, nor did he let his present successes make him complacent. He pressed on toward the goal of becoming more and more like Jesus.

We are running this race too. Despite our past failures or successes, let us keep pressing on toward the ultimate goal of becoming more like Jesus. We are not racing for an earthly prize, but for the ultimate reward of enjoying Him forever. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

온전한 은혜

완전한 이상과 온전한 은혜에 관한 예수님의 가르침은 서로 모순되는 것처럼 보입니다.

예수님이 하나님의 완전한 이상의 기준을 낮추신 적은 한 번도 없습니다. 젊은 부자 관원을 향해서 예수님은 “그러므로 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 온전하심과 같이 너희도 온전하라” (마태복음 5:48)고 말씀하셨습니다. 주님은 가장 큰 계명에 대해 묻는 율법사에게도 “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”(22:37) 고 말씀하셨습니다. 그 명령들을 완전히 지킨 사람은 지금껏 아무도 없습니다.

하지만 바로 그 예수님이 온전한 은혜도 온유하게 제시해주셨습니다. 주님은 간음한 여인과 십자가상의 강도, 예수님을 부인한 제자, 그리고 그리스도인을 박해하여 유명하게 된 사울이라는 사람도 용서하셨습니다. 은혜는 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 사람들까지도 모두 아우르는 완전한 것입니다. “아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다” (누가복음 23:34)라는 말씀은 주님이 이 땅에서 마지막으로 남긴 말씀 가운데 하나였습니다.

오랫동안 나는 예수님의 완전한 이상을 생각할 때마다 내가 너무 하찮게 여겨져서 주님의 은혜에 관한 생각을 아주 놓치고 있었습니다. 그러나 이상과 은혜라는 이 이중의 메시지를 이해하자, 나는 돌이켜 예수님의 삶과 가르침 속에 은혜의 메시지가 강하게 흐르고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

자신의 힘으로는 도무지 어찌할 수 없는 절망적인 사람들과 궁핍한 사람들, 상처받은 사람들을 위해 은혜를 주셨습니다. 바로 우리 모두를 위해 은혜를 주신 것입니다.

예수님이 율법의 요구를 온전히 이루셨기에 우리가 주님의 은혜가 주는 온전한 평화를 누릴 수 있다.

Perfect Grace

Jesus’s teaching about absolute ideals and absolute grace seem contradictory.

Jesus never lowered God’s perfect ideal. In His response to the rich young ruler, He said, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (MATT. 5:48). He told an expert in the law who inquired as to the greatest commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (22:37). No one has completely fulfilled those commands.

Yet the same Jesus tenderly offered absolute grace. He forgave an adulteress, a thief on the cross, a disciple who had denied ever knowing Him, and a man named Saul, who had made his mark persecuting Christians. Grace is absolute and all-encompassing, extending even to those who nailed Jesus to the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” were among the last words He spoke on earth (LUKE 23:34).

For years I felt so unworthy when considering Jesus’s absolute ideals that I missed any notion of His grace. Once I understood this dual message, however, I went back and found that the message of grace gusts through Jesus’s life and teachings.

Grace is for the desperate, the needy, the broken, those who cannot make it on their own. Grace is for all of us. - PHILIP YANCEY

보스턴에 있는 노스이스턴 대학에서는 ‘바이럴 텍스트(급속히 널리 퍼지는 문서)’라는 과제로 1800년대의 인쇄된 내용이 그 당시 사회 매체 연결망이었던 신문을 통해 어떻게 퍼졌는지를 연구하고 있습니다. 만약 어떤 기사가 50번 이상 인쇄되었다면 그것은 산업시대에 있어서 “급속히 널리 퍼지는” 것으로 간주되었습니다. 브리트 피터슨은 스미소니언 잡지에 기고한 글에서, 예수님을 따르는 사람들이 그들의 믿음 때문에 사형을 당했다는 19세기의 뉴스 기사가 적어도 110개의 다른 기사로 출판되었다고 썼습니다.

바울 사도는 데살로니가교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 그들이 기쁘고 담대하게 예수님을 증언했다고 칭찬했습니다. “주님의 말씀이 여러분으로부터 마케도니아와 아가야에만 울려 퍼진 것이 아니라, 하나님을 향한 여러분의 믿음에 대한 소문이 각처에 두루 퍼졌습니다”(데살로니가전서 1:8, 새번역). 복음의 메시지는 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 변화된 사람들을 통해 급속히 널리 퍼져나갔습니다. 고난과 박해에도 불구하고 그들은 침묵할 수 없었습니다.

The Viral Gospel

The Viral Texts project at Northeastern University in Boston is studying how printed content in the 1800s spread through newspapers—the social media network of that day. If an article was reprinted 50 times or more, they considered that “viral” for the industrial age. Writing in Smithsonian magazine, Britt Peterson noted that a nineteenth-century news article describing which followers of Jesus were executed for their faith appeared in at least 110 different publications.

When the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Thessalonica, he commended them for their bold and joyful witness to Jesus. “The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere” (1 THESS. 1:8). The message of the gospel went viral through these people whose lives had been transformed by Jesus Christ. In spite of difficulties and persecution, they could not remain silent.

We convey the story of forgiveness and eternal life in Christ through kind hearts, helping hands, and honest words from all of us who know the Lord. The gospel transforms us and the lives of those we meet. May the message ring out from us for all to hear today! - DAVID MCCASLAND

강가의 나무

선망의 대상인 한 나무가 있었습니다. 강변에서 자라는 이 나무는 일기예보나 폭염, 또는 불확실한 미래에 대해 염려할 필요가 없었습니다. 강이 영양을 공급해주고 열기를 식혀주었기에 그저 태양을 향해 가지를 들어 올리고, 뿌리로 땅을 붙잡고, 잎으로는 공기를 맑게 청소하며, 태양을 피할 곳을 찾는 모든 이들에게 그늘을 제공해주며 나날들을 보냈습니다.

그와 대조적으로 예레미야 선지자는 한 떨기나무에 주목하였습니다(예레미야 17:6). 비가 그치고 여름의 태양이 땅을 메마르게 하자, 떨기나무는 쪼그라들어 누구에게도 그늘이나 과일을 제공할 수 없게 되었습니다.

왜 선지자는 시들어가는 떨기나무와 울창한 나무를 비교하였을까요? 그는 그의 백성들이 이집트의 노예상태에서 기적적으로 구출된 이래 어떤 일들이 일어났는지 기억하기를 원했습니다. 40년간의 광야 생활은 그들에게는 강가의 나무와 같은 삶이었습니다(2:4-6). 하지만 풍요로운 약속의 땅에서 그들은 자신들의 이야기를 잊어버리고 그들 자신과 그들이 직접 만든 신을 의지하였으며(7-8절), 심지어 도움을 받기 위해 이집트로 다시 돌아가려고까지 하였습니다(42:14).

그래서 하나님은 예레미야를 통하여 잘 잊어버리는 이스라엘 자손들에게 사랑으로 권면하셨던 것입니다. 그리고 우리에게도 주님을 소망하고 신뢰하여 덤불이 아니라 강가의 나무와 같이 되라고 권면하십니다.

하나님 아버지, 어디에도 하나님이 계시지 않는 것 같아 보일 때라도, 하나님은 여러 가지 방법으로 오직 하나님 한 분만을 신뢰할 수 있다는 것을 가르쳐주셨습니다. 하나님이 지금껏 우리에게 이미 보여주신 것들을 오늘 기억할 수 있도록 도와주소서.

좋은 시절에는 고난의 날들에 배웠던 것들을 기억하자.

River

This was a tree to be envied. Growing on riverfront property, it didn’t have to worry about weather reports, withering temperatures, or an uncertain future. Nourished and cooled by the river, it spent its days lifting its branches to the sun, holding the earth with its roots, cleaning the air with its leaves, and offering shade to all who needed refuge from the sun.

By contrast, the prophet Jeremiah pointed to a shrub (JER. 17:6). When the rains stopped and the summer sun turned the ground to dust, the bush shriveled into itself, offering no shade or fruit to anyone.

Why would the prophet compare a flourishing tree to a withering bush? He wanted his people to recall what had happened since their miraculous rescue from the slave yards of Egypt. For forty years in a wilderness, they lived like a tree planted by a river (2:4–6). Yet in the prosperity of their promised land they had forgotten their own story; they were relying on themselves and on gods of their own making (VV. 7–8), even to the point of going back to Egypt looking for help (42:14).

So God, through Jeremiah, lovingly urged the forgetful children of Israel, and He urges us, to hope and trust in the Lord and to be like the tree—not the bush. - MART DEHAAN

피냐타보다 좋은

멕시코 사람들의 파티에서 피냐타 없는 파티는 생각할 수도 없습니다. 피냐타는 사탕이나 과자가 가득 들어 있는 찰흙이나 종이로 된 통입니다. 아이들은 그 속에 든 것을 먹으려고 막대기로 그 통을 쳐서 깨뜨립니다.

수도사들은 16세기에 피냐타를 사용하여 멕시코 토착민들에게 교훈을 가르쳤습니다. 7개의 뾰족한 끝을 가진 별 모양의 피냐타는 죽음에 이르는 7개의 죄를 상징했습니다 . 피냐타를 두드리는 행위는 악에 대항하는 투쟁을 보여주는 것이었고, 그 안에 있는 과자가 땅으로 떨어지면 사람들은 그것을 가지고 집으로 가면서 믿음을 지킨 보상을 받는다고 기억했습니다.

그러나 우리 힘으로는 악과 싸울 수 없습니다. 하나님은 우리의 노력을 기다리시지 않고 그분의 자비를 보여주십니다. 에베소서는 이렇게 가르쳐줍니다. “그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은......하나님의 선물이라”(2:8). 우리는 죄를 이기지 못하지만, 예수님께서 죄를 이기셨습니다.

아이들은 피냐타로부터 사탕을 얻기 위해 애를 쓰지만, 하나님의 선물은 우리가 예수님을 믿을 때 우리 모두에게 주어집니다. 하나님은 “모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주셨습니다”(1:3). 우리는 죄의 용서, 속량, 양자됨, 새로운 삶, 기쁨, 사랑, 그리고 그 외에도 많은 것을 받았습니다. 이러한 신령한 복들은 우리가 강하거나 믿음을 지켰기 때문에 얻는 것이 아니라, 우리가 예수님을 믿기 때문에 얻는 것입니다. 신령한 복들은 오직 은혜를 통해서, 우리가 받을 자격이 없는 은혜를 통해서만 옵니다!

Better Than a Piñata

There cannot be a Mexican party without a piñata—a carton or clay container filled with candies and treats. Children strike it with a stick and try to break it, hoping to enjoy its contents.

Monks used the piñatas in the sixteenth century to teach lessons to the indigenous people of Mexico. Piñatas were stars with seven points that represented the seven deadly sins. Beating the piñata showed the struggle against evil, and once the treats inside fell to the ground, people could take them home in remembrance of the rewards of keeping the faith.

But we cannot fight evil on our own. God is not waiting for our efforts so that He will show His mercy. Ephesians teaches that “by grace you have been saved through faith, . . . it is the gift of God” (2:8). We don’t beat sin; Christ has done that.

Children fight for the candies from the piñata, but God’s gifts come to all of us when we believe in Jesus. God “has blessed us . . . with every spiritual blessing” (1:3). We have forgiveness of sins, redemption, adoption, new life, joy, love, and much more. We don’t get these spiritual blessings because we have kept the faith and are strong; we get them because we believe in Jesus. Spiritual blessings come only through grace— undeserved grace! - KEILA OCHOA

등대

르완다에 있는 “등대”라고 부르는 사역센터는 그 존재 자체만으로도 속량을 상징합니다. 그 등대는 1994년 인종학살 기간 동안 그 나라 대통령 소유의 호화 저택이 있었던 곳에 자리 잡고 있습니다. 이 새로운 건물은 기독교인들에 의해서 빛과 희망의 표지로 세워졌습니다. 그곳에는 지역사회를 위한 호텔, 식당, 그리고 다양한 서비스들과 함께, 새로운 세대의 기독교 지도자들을 양성하기 위한 성경학교도 있습니다. 잿더미 속에서 새로운 삶이 시작된 것입니다. ‘등대’를 건설한 사람들은 예수님을 그들의 희망과 속량의 근원으로 바라봅니다.

예수님은 안식일에 나사렛에 있는 회당에 가서 이사야의 글을 읽으시며, 자신이 주의 은혜를 선포하는 기름 부음 받은 자임을 나타내셨습니다(누가복음 4:14-21 참조). 주님은 상한 심령을 감싸시며 속량과 용서를 주시기 위해 오신 분이셨습니다. 예수 그리스도 안에서 우리는 잿더미에서 시작되는 아름다움을 볼 수 있습니다(이사야 61:3).

우리는 부족 간의 싸움으로 인해 50만 명 이상의 희생을 가져온, 도저히 이해할 수 없고 고통스럽고 또 그것에 관하여 어떤 말을 하기도 어려운 르완다 인종학살의 잔혹함을 봅니다. 하지만 우리는 주님이 이 지구상이나 천국에서 그 잔혹함을 다시 회복시켜주실 수 있음을 압니다. 슬픔 대신 기쁨의 기름을 부어주시는 주님은 가장 어두운 상황 한가운데서도 우리에게 희망을 주십니다.

The Lighthouse

By its very existence, a ministry center in Rwanda called the “Lighthouse” symbolizes redemption. It sits on land where during the genocide in 1994 the country’s president owned a grand home. This new structure, however, has been erected by Christians as a beacon of light and hope. Housed there is a Bible institute to raise up a new generation of Christian leaders, along with a hotel, restaurant, and other
services for the community. Out of the ashes has come new life. Those who built the Lighthouse look to Jesus as their source of hope and redemption.

When Jesus went to the synagogue in Nazareth on the Sabbath, He read from the book of Isaiah and announced that He was the Anointed One to proclaim the Lord’s favor (SEE LUKE 4:14–21). He was the One who came to bind up the brokenhearted and offer redemption and forgiveness. In Jesus we see beauty coming from the ashes (ISA. 61:3).

We find the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide, when intertribal fighting cost more than a half-million lives, mindboggling and harrowing, and we hardly know what to say about them. And yet we know that the Lord can redeem the atrocities—either here on earth or in heaven. He who bestows the oil of joy instead of mourning gives us hope even in the midst of the darkest of situations. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
