은혜의 행동

‘은혜에 대하여’라는 소설에서 자신과 소원해진 딸을 찾고 싶어하던 데이비드 윙클러에게는 허먼 쉴러가 그를 도울 수 있는 유일한 사람입니다. 하지만 문제가 있습니다. 데이비드의 딸은 사실 그와 허먼의 아내와의 불륜관계에서 태어난 아이였고, 허먼은 그에게 다시는 연락하지 말라고 경고한 상태였습니다.

그렇게 수십 년이 지나 데이비드는 허먼에게 편지를 보내어 자신이 한 일에 대해 사과를 합니다. 그리고는 이어서 “나는 내 딸에 대해 아는 게 거의 없어 인생에 빈 공간이 있습니다.”라고 하며 딸에 대한 정보를 달라고 간곡히 부탁합니다. 그는 허먼이 과연 자기를 도와줄지 조용히 기다립니다.

ACTS OF GRACE

In the novel About Grace, David Winkler longs to find his estranged daughter, and Herman Sheeler is the only person who can help him. But there’s a hitch. David’s daughter was born from David’s affair with Herman’s wife, and Herman had warned him never to contact them again.

Decades pass before David writes to Herman, apologizing for what he’s done. “I have a hole in my life because I know so little about my daughter,” he adds, begging for information about her. He waits to see if Herman will help him.

How should we treat those who’ve wronged us? The king of Israel faced this question after his enemies were miraculously delivered into his hands (2 KINGS 6:8-20). “Shall I kill them?” he asks the prophet Elisha. No, Elisha says. “Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink and then go back to their master” (VV. 21-22). Through this act of grace, Israel finds peace with its enemies (V. 23).

Herman replies to David’s letter, invites him to his home and cooks him a meal. “Lord Jesus,” he prays before they eat, “thank you for watching over me and David all these years.” He helps David find his daughter, and David later saves his life. In God’s hands, our acts of grace toward those who’ve wronged us often result in a blessing to us.

하나님과의 영상통화

2022년은 아내와 나에게 매우 특별한 해였습니다. 여덟 명의 손주 가운데 유일한 손녀인 소피아 애쉴리가 태어난 해이기 때문입니다. 소피아의 조부모님들 얼굴에서 웃음이 떠나질 않았습니다! 우리 아들과 영상통화를 하게 되면 신남은 배가 됩니다. 다른 방에 있더라도 아내의 즐거운 환성이 들려오면 그것은 아내가 소피아를 보고 있다는 것을 알려줍니다. 멀리 떨어져 있는 사랑하는 사람들을 만나는 것은 이제 전화 한통이나 클릭 한 번이면 가능합니다.

우리가 보면서 전화로 통화할 수 있게 된 것은 비교적 최근의 일입니다. 그러나 하나님을 얼굴로 대하는 시간, 곧 하나님의 임재를 의식적으로 알며 기도하는 시간은 늘 있어왔습니다. 시편 27편에서 다윗은 가장 가까운 동맹들의 도움조차도 소용없었던 위기 가운데(10-12절) 했던 기도에서 이렇게 고백합니다. “너희는 내 얼굴을 찾으라 하실 때에 내가 마음으로 주께 말하되 여호와여 내가 주의 얼굴을 찾으리이다 하였나이다”(8절).

고난의 때에 우리는 당연히 “주의 얼굴을 찾게” 됩니다(8절). 그러나 “존재가 기쁨으로 가득 차 있는” 하나님과 얼굴을 마주해야 할 때는 그 때만이 아닙니다. 하나님의 “오른손에는 영원한 기쁨이”(16:11) 있습니다. 귀를 기울이면 언제든지 하나님께서 “나와 함께 이야기하러 오라”고 말씀하시는 것을 들을 수 있습니다.

FACE TIME WITH GOD

The year 2022 was very special for my wife and me. That’s the year our granddaughter, Sophia Ashley, was born—the only granddaughter among our eight grandchildren. Sophia’s grandparents haven’t stopped smiling! When our son calls via video, the excitement gets ramped up even more. My wife and I may be in different rooms, but her joyful holler reveals that she’s getting a glimpse of Sophia. Seeing those we love from afar is now only a call or click away.

The ability to see the person we’re talking to on the phone is relatively new, but face time with God—prayer with a conscious awareness of being in His presence—is not. David’s prayer in Psalm 27—voiced in the midst of opposition that required assistance beyond the capability of the closest human allies (VV. 10-12)— includes these words: “My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming’ ” (V. 8 NLT).

Difficult times rightly compel us to “seek his face” (V. 8). But that’s not the only time we can or should be in face-to-face fellowship with the one in whose “presence is fullness of joy”; at His “right hand are pleasures forevermore” (16:11 NKJV). If you listen closely, at any time you may hear Him say, “Come and talk with me.”

아기 예수여, 환영합니다

우리는 임신한 이웃이 첫 아기를 낳았다는 소식이 오기를 애타게 기다렸습니다. 마침내 이웃집 앞 마당에 걸린 “딸입니다!”라는 팻말을 보고 우리는 아기의 탄생을 축하했고 아직 팻말을 보지 못한 친구들에게 문자를 보냈습니다.

아기가 태어나기를 기다리는 동안에는 큰 설렘이 있습니다. 예수님이 태어나기 전, 유대인들은 그저 몇 개월 동안 기다려온 것이 아니었습니다. 그들은 이스라엘의 구원자로 예언된 메시아의 탄생을 여러 세대에 걸쳐 기다려 왔습니다. 나는 그 세월 동안 신실한 유대인들이 자신의 생전에 이 약속이 이루어지는 것을 보게 될지 궁금해하는 모습을 상상해봅니다.

WELCOME BABY JESUS

It felt like we’d been waiting forever for news that our pregnant neighbor had welcomed her first baby. When a sign declaring “It’s a Girl!” finally appeared on their front lawn, we celebrated the birth of their daughter and texted friends who might not have seen the outdoor display.

There’s great excitement awaiting the arrival of a baby. Before Jesus’ birth, the Jewish people hadn’t just been waiting a few months, they’d longed for the birth of the Messiah, Israel’s expected rescuer, for generations. I imagine that over the years faithful Jews wondered if during their lifetime they would see the fulfillment of this promise.

One night the long-anticipated news was displayed in the heavens when an angel appeared to shepherds in Bethlehem announcing that the Messiah had finally been born. He told them, “This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (LUKE 2:12). After the shepherds saw Jesus, they praised God and “spread the word” (V. 17) about the baby.

God wanted the shepherds to know that the long-awaited baby had arrived so they could tell others about Jesus’ birth. We still celebrate His birth because His life provides rescue from the brokenness of the world to anyone who believes. We no longer have to wait to know peace and experience joy, which is good news worth announcing!

남편과 나는 교회의 크리스마스 이브 예배에 참석하는 것이 언제나 좋았습니다. 결혼 초기에는 예배 후에 따뜻한 옷을 입고 근처 언덕으로 올라가 긴 막대기들에 별 모양으로 걸려있는 350개의 등불을 보는 특별한 전통을 이어왔습니다. 때론 눈이 오기도 했지만 거기서 도시를 내려다보며 예수님의 기적 같은 탄생에 대해 속삭이곤 했습니다. 그 때 아래 계곡에서는 많은 사람들이 밝게 빛나는 별 모양의 등불을 올려다보고 있었습니다.

그 별은 우리 구주의 탄생을 상기시킵니다. 성경은 “동방으로부터” 박사들이 “유대인의 왕으로 나신 이”를 찾아 예루살렘에 도착했다고 전합니다 (마태복음 2:1-2). 그들은 하늘을 주시하다가 “동방에서” 예수님을 상징하는 별을 볼 수 있었습니다(2절). 그들의 여정은 예루살렘에서 베들레헴으로 이어졌고, 그 별은 “앞서 인도하여 가다가 아기 있는 곳 위에 머물러 서 있었” 습니다(9절). 거기서 그들은 “엎드려 아기께 경배”했습니다(11절).

THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

My husband and I have always enjoyed attending the Christmas Eve service at our church. In the early years of our marriage, we had a special tradition of bundling up in warm clothing after the service to hike up a nearby hill where 350 glowing lights were strung from tall poles in the shape of a star. There—often in the snow—we’d whisper our reflections on Jesus’ miraculous birth while we gazed out over the city. Meanwhile, many people in the town were looking up at the bright, string-light star from the valley below.

That star is a reminder of the birth of our Savior. The Bible tells of magi “from the east” who arrived in Jerusalem seeking “the one who [had] been born king of the Jews” (MATTHEW 2:1-2). They’d been watching the skies and had seen the star “when it rose” (V. 2). Their journey took them onward from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, the star going “ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was” (V. 9). There, they “bowed down and worshiped him” (V. 11).

Christ is the source of light in our lives both figuratively (as the one who guides us) and literally as the one who created the sun, moon, and stars in the sky (COLOSSIANS 1:15-16). Like the magi who “were overjoyed” when they saw His star (MATTHEW 2:10), our greatest delight is in knowing Him as the Savior who came down from the heavens to dwell among us. “We have seen his glory” (JOHN 1:14)!

FRIENDLY AMBITION

Gregory of Nazianzus and Basil of Caesarea were celebrated leaders in the fourth-century church and also close friends. They first met as philosophy students, and Gregory later said that they became like “two bodies with a single spirit.”

With their career paths so similar, rivalry could’ve arisen between Gregory and Basil. But Gregory explained that they avoided this temptation by making a life of faith, hope, and good deeds their “single ambition,” then “spurring each other on” to make the other more successful in this goal than themselves individually. As a result, both grew in faith and rose to high levels of leadership without rivalry.

The book of Hebrews is written to help us stay strong in faith (HEBREWS 2:1), encouraging us to focus on “the hope we profess” and to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (10:23–24). While this command is given in the context of a congregation (V. 25), by applying it to their friendship, Gregory and Basil showed how friends can encourage each other to grow and avoid any “bitter root,” such as rivalry that might grow between them (12:15).

What if we made faith, hope, and good deeds the ambition of our own friendships, then encouraged our friends to become more successful in this goal than ourselves individually? The Holy Spirit is ready to help us do both.

나는 병원 침대에 누워있는 친구 마가렛 옆에 앉아 분주하게 움직이는 다른 환자들과 의료진과 방문객들을 보고 있었습니다. 아픈 어머니 곁에 앉아 있던 한 젊은 여성이 마가렛에게 물었습니다. “당신을 계속 보러 오는 그 사람들은 누군가요?” 마가렛이 “우리 교회 식구들이예요!”라고 대답하자, 그런 것을 본 적이 없었던 젊은 여성은 그 많은 방문객들이 “실체적인 사랑을 부어주는 것 같다”고 말했습니다. 마가렛은 웃으며 대답했습니다. “모든 게 하나님이 그의 아들 예수 그리스도를 통해 보여주신 사랑 덕분이지요.”

마가렛의 대답 안에는 요한 사도가 마지막 몇 년 사이에 쓴 사랑으로 가득한 세 통의 편지 내용이 들어있습니다. 첫 번째 편지에서 요한 사도는 “하나님은 사랑이시라 사랑 안에서 거하는 자는 하나님 안에 거하고 하나님도 그들 안에 거하시느니라”(요한1서 4:16)고 했습니다. 곧 하나님은 “성령”을 통해(13절) “예수를 하나님의 아들”이라 시인하는 자들(15절) 안에 거하십니다. 우리는 어떻게 다른 이들을 사랑으로 돌볼 수 있을까요? “우리가 사랑함은 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨”기 때문입니다(19절).

TANGIBLE LOVE

As I sat next to my friend Margaret, who was lying in her hospital bed, I took in the bustle and activity of the other patients, medical staff, and visitors. A young woman sitting nearby with her ailing mother asked Margaret, “Who are all the people who keep visiting you?” She responded, “They’re members of my church family!” The young woman remarked that she’d never seen anything like it; she felt as if the many visitors were “like tangible love poured out.” Margaret replied, smiling, “It all comes down to our love of God through His Son Jesus Christ!”

In her response, Margaret echoed the disciple John, who in his final years wrote three letters brimming with love. In his first letter, he said, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them” (1 JOHN 4:16). That is, those who acknowledge “that Jesus is the Son of God” (V. 15) have God living in them through “his Spirit” (V. 13). How can we lovingly care for others? “We love because he first loved us” (V. 19).

Because of the gift of God’s love, visiting Margaret hadn’t felt like a hardship to me or others in our church. I received more than I gave, not only from Margaret, but through observing her gentle witness about her Savior, Jesus. How might God love others through you today?

론은 알라스카에서 지구에서 가장 멋진 기상 현상인 북극광을 따라가며 사진 찍는 여행 상품을 제공합니다. 그는 이 경험을 “매우 영적”이라고 말합니다. 누구나 하늘을 가로지르는 이 형광색의 광경을 한번 보면 그 이유를 알게 될 것입니다.

그 빛은 북반구에서만 나타나는 현상이 아닙니다. 남극광도 북극광과 거의 같은 모습으로 남반구에 발생합니다.

WINDOW TO THE WONDERFUL

Photographer Ronn Murray likes cold weather. “Cold means clear skies,” he explains. “And that can open a window to the wonderful!”

Ronn provides Alaskan photography tours dedicated to tracking Earth’s most spectacular light show—aurora borealis (the northern lights). Murray speaks of the experience as “very spiritual.” If you’ve ever seen this iridescent display dance across the heavens, you’ll understand why.

But the lights aren’t only a northern phenomenon. Aurora australis, nearly identical to borealis, occurs simultaneously in the south—the same kind of lights.

In the disciple John’s telling of the Christmas story, he skips the stable and shepherds and goes directly to the one who “brought light to everyone” (JOHN 1:4 NLT). When John later writes of a heavenly city, he describes the source of its light. This “city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light” (REVELATION 21:23 NLT). This light source is Jesus—the same source referenced in John 1. And for those who inhabit this future dwelling, “there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them” (22:5 NLT).

As our lives reflect this light of the world—the one who created aurora borealis and australis—we open a window to the truly wonderful.

진리는 변하지 않는다

내 아들 재비어가 어렸을 때 그와 나는 동화책에서 어떤 아이가 펜을 펜이라 부르지 않고 자기가 지어낸 이름으로 불러서 교사에게 반항하는 이야기를 읽었습니다. 그 학생은 다른 5학년 친구들을 설득해서 자기가 붙인 새 이름으로 펜을 부르게 했습니다. 그 아이가 만든 새 단어에 관한 소식이 마을 전체에 퍼졌습니다. 나중엔 그 나라 사람들 전체가 한 아이가 지어낸 것을 보편적 진리로 받아들이고 펜을 다른 이름으로 부르기 시작했습니다.

역사적으로 불완전한 인간들은 진리가 계속해서 변한다고 생각하거나 자신의 욕망을 만족시키기 위해 개인적으로 선호하는 현실만을 받아들였습니다. 그러나 성경은 하나의 진리와, 유일한 진리의 하나님과, 구원으로 가는 유일한 길 메시아를 가리킵니다. 성경은 이 메시아를 통해 “주의 영광이 나타날 것” (이사야 40:5)이라 말합니다. 선지자 이사야는 인간이 다른 모든 피조물처럼 일시적이고, 결함이 있고, 신뢰할 수 없는 존재라고 확실히 말했습니다(6-7절). 그는 “풀은 마르고 꽃은 떨어지나 우리 하나님의 말씀은 영원히 있다”(8절) 고 말했습니다.

오실 메시아에 대한 이사야의 예언에는 믿을 수 있는 근거와 안전한 피난처와 보장된 소망이 있습니다. 예수님 자신이 말씀이시기 때문에 우리는 하나님의 말씀을 믿을 수가 있습니다(요한복음 1:1). 예수님은 절대 변하지 않는 진리입니다.

THE TRUTH NEVER CHANGES

When he was younger, my son Xavier and I read a fictional children’s story about a boy who rebelled against his teacher by referring to a pen by a made-up name. The student convinced his fellow fifth graders to use the new name he created for pens. News about the boy’s replacement word spread through the whole town. Eventually, people across the country changed the way they referred to pens, simply because others accepted one boy’s made-up reality as a universal truth.

Throughout history, flawed human beings have embraced ever-changing versions of truth or personal preferred realities to suit their desires. However, the Bible points to one truth, the one true God, and one way to salvation—the Messiah—through whom “the glory of the Lord will be revealed” (ISAIAH 40:5). The prophet Isaiah affirmed that people, like all created things, are temporal, fallible, and unreliable (VV. 6-7). He said, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever” (V. 8).

Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming Messiah provides a dependable foundation, a safe refuge, and a secured hope. We can trust God’s Word because Jesus Himself is the Word (JOHN 1:1). Jesus is the Truth who never changes.

하나님이 보시는 우리

1968년 미국은 베트남 전쟁의 수렁에 빠져있었으며, 여러 도시에서 인종 간 폭력 사건이 일어났고 두 명의 공인이 암살을 당했습니다. 그보다 한해 전에는 세 명의 우주 비행사가 발사대에서 화재로 목숨을 잃어 달에 가는 것은 꿈같은 일로 보였습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 크리스마스를 며칠 앞두고 아폴로 8호가 발사되었습니다.

이것이 최초의 달 탐사 유인 우주 비행이었습니다. 승무원 보먼, 앤더스, 로벨은 모두 신앙인들로 다음과 같은 크리스마스 이브 메시지를 보냈습니다. “태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라”(창세기 1:1). 이것은 당시 세계에서 가장 많이 시청된 TV 프로그램으로 수백만의 사람들이 함께 하나님의 시각에서 지구를 보았고 그 광경은 지금까지 매우 유명한 사진으로 남아있습니다. 프랭크 보먼은 “하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라”(10절)는 말씀으로 메시지를 마쳤습니다.

GOD’S VIEW OF US

It was 1968, and America was mired in a war with Vietnam, racial violence was exploding in cities, and two public figures had been assassinated. A year before, fire had taken the lives of three astronauts on the launchpad, and the idea of going to the moon seemed like a pipe dream. Nonetheless, Apollo 8 managed to launch a few days before Christmas.

It became the first manned mission to orbit the moon. The flight crew, Borman, Anders, and Lovell—all men of faith—broadcast a Christmas Eve message: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (GENESIS 1:1). At the time, it was the most watched TV event in the world, and millions shared the God’s-eye view of Earth in a now iconic photo. Frank Borman finished the reading: “And God saw that it was good” (V. 10).

Sometimes it’s hard to look at ourselves, all the hardships we’re mired in, and see anything that’s good. But we might return to the story of creation and see God’s view of us: “In the image of God he created them” (V. 27). Let’s pair that with another divineeye view: “For God so loved the world” (JOHN 3:16). Today, remember that God created you, sees the good despite the sin, and loves the you He created.

“긴급상황입니다. 우리 비행기의 조종사가 사망했습니다.” 더그 화이트는 자신이 타고 있는 비행기를 추적 관찰하는 관제탑을 향해 급한 목소리로 이렇게 전했습니다. 더그의 가족이 빌린 전세 비행기가 이륙한지 몇 분 지나지 않아 조종사가 갑자기 죽은 것입니다. 겨우 3개월 정도 소형 비행기로 비행훈련을 받았던 더그가 조종석에 앉았습니다. 그리고는 비행기 착륙 유도를 지시하는 현지 공항 관제사들의 말을 주의 깊게 들었습니다. 더그는 나중에 “[그들이] 우리 가족을 불에 타 죽을 수 밖에 없는 운명에서 건졌습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

우리에게는 인생의 문제들을 헤쳐나가는 데 도움을 줄 수 있는 오직 한 분이 계십니다. 모세는 이스라엘 백성에게 “네 하나님 여호와께서 너희 가운데 네 형제 중에서 너를 위하여 나와 같은 선지자 하나를 일으키시리니... 너희는 그의 말을 들을지니라”(신명기 18:15)고 말했습니다. 이 약속은 하나님께서 그의 백성을 위해 준비하신 일련의 선지자들을 가리키는 것이기도 했지만 메시아에 대한 말씀이기도 했습니다. 후에 베드로와 스데반은 이 궁극적인 선지자가 예수님이라고 말했습니다(사도행전 3:19-22; 7:37, 51-56). 예수님 한 분만이 우리에게 하나님의 사랑과 지혜의 교훈을 전하러 오셨습니다(신명기 18:18).

WHO WE LISTEN TO

“I’ve got to declare an emergency. My pilot’s deceased.” Doug White nervously uttered those words to the control tower monitoring his flight. Minutes after takeoff, the pilot of the private plane Doug’s family had chartered suddenly passed away. Doug stepped into the cockpit with just three-month’s training in flying less sophisticated aircraft. He then carefully listened to controllers at a local airport who talked him through landing the plane. Later, Doug said, “[They] saved my family from an almost certain fiery death.”

We have one who alone can help us navigate the challenges in life. Moses, speaking to the Israelites, said, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you . . . . You must listen to him” (DEUTERONOMY 18:15). This promise pointed to a succession of prophets God provided for His people, but it also spoke of the Messiah. Both Peter and Stephen would later state that this ultimate prophet was Jesus (ACTS 3:19-22; 7:37, 51-56). He alone came to tell us the loving and wise instructions of God (DEUTERONOMY 18:18).

During Christ’s life, God the Father said, “This is my Son . . . . Listen to him!” (MARK 9:7). To live wisely and avoid crashing and burning in this life, let’s listen to Jesus as He speaks through the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit. Listening to Him makes all the difference.
