무작위로 친절 베풀기

미국 작가 앤 허버트가 1982년에 어느 음식점의 식탁보 위에 “무작위로 친절을 베풀고 의식 없이 아름다운 행동을 실천하라” 라는 문구를 낙서해놓았다고 합니다. 그 이후로 그 말은 영화와 문학을 통하여 대중화되었고 일상 어휘의 한 부분이 되었습니다.

그런데 “왜?”라는 질문이 생깁니다. 왜 우리가 친절을 베풀어야 합니까? 예수님을 따르는 사람들에게는 답이 분명합니다. 그것은 하나님의 부드러운 자비와 친절을 보여주기 위해서입니다.

구약성경에는 모압에서 이주해온 룻의 이야기 속에 이 원리를 보여주는 본보기가 있습니다. 룻은 이방인으로서, 그녀가 이해할 수 없는 언어와 문화를 지닌 낯선 땅에 살게 되었습니다. 더욱이 그녀는 몹시 가난하였으며, 그녀를 거의 알지 못하는 사람들의 자비에 전적으로 의존해야 했습니다.

그러나 룻에게 은혜를 베풀고 그녀의 마음에 감동을 준 이스라엘 사람이 하나 있었습니다(룻기 2:13). 그는 룻에게 그가 소유한 밭에서 이삭을 줍도록 허락하였고, 단순한 자선 이상으로 그의 동정심은 그녀가 그 날개 아래 피난처를 찾을 수 있는 하나님의 자상한 자비를 보여주었습니다. 룻은 보아스의 신부가 되어 하나님의 가족의 일부가 되었고, 세상에 구원을 가져오신 예수님께로 이어지는 조상의 한 줄기가 되었습니다(마태복음 1:1-16 참조).

우리는 예수님의 이름으로 행한 친절이 어떤 결과를 가져올지 결코 알지 못합니다.

Random Acts of Kindness

Some say that the American writer Anne Herbert scribbled the phrase “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a placemat at a restaurant in 1982. The sentiment has since been popularized through film and literature and has become a part of our vocabulary.

The question is “Why?” Why should we show kindness? For those who follow Jesus, the answer is clear: To show the tender mercy and kindness of God.

There’s an Old Testament example of that principle in the story of Ruth, the emigrant from Moab. She was a foreigner, living in a strange land whose language and culture she did not understand. Furthermore, she was desperately poor, utterly dependent on the charity of a people who took little notice of her.

There was one Israelite, however, who showed Ruth grace and spoke to her heart (RUTH 2:13). He allowed her to glean in his fields, but more than simple charity, he showed her by his compassion the tender mercy of God, the One under whose wings she could take refuge. She became Boaz’s bride, part of the family of God, and one in a line of ancestors that led to Jesus, who brought salvation to the world (SEE MATT. 1:1–16).

오래되었지만 새로운

2014년 켄터키 주의 국립 코르벳 박물관 밑에서 땅이 가라앉아 생긴 큰 웅덩이가 둘도 없는 고풍스러운 쉐브레 코르벳 스포츠카 8대를 삼켰습니다. 자동차들은 심하게 손상되었고 몇 대는 복구가 힘들 지경이었습니다.

그중에 특히 큰 주목을 받은 한 차가 있었습니다. 1992년에 조립되어 나온 백만 번째의 그 코르벳은 그 수집품 중에서 가장 가치가 큰 차였습니다. 그 보물 같은 차가 웅덩이로부터 끌어올려진 후 매우 흥미로운 일이 일어났습니다. 전문가들이 대부분의 부품을 원래의 것으로 사용하거나 수리해서 그 자동차를 나무랄데 없이 완벽하게 복구한 것입니다. 그렇게 아름답던 것이 끔찍하게 망가졌었지만, 이제는 마치 처음 만들어져 나왔던 때처럼 아주 좋은 모습을 갖게 되었습니다.

오래되고 망가진 것이 새롭게 되었습니다.

이것은 하나님께서 예수님을 믿는 자들을 위해 예비해두신 것을 아주 선명히 기억나게 해줍니다. 요한계시록 21장 1절에서 요한은 “새 하늘과 새 땅”을 봤다고 말했습니다. 많은 성경학자들은 “새” 땅을 새로 고쳐진 땅으로 보고 있습니다. 그들의 연구에 의하면 여기 “새”라는 단어는 부패한 낡은 것들이 흔적도 없이 사라진 후 “새롭게 되다” 혹은 “복구되다”의 의미를 가리키고 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 이 땅에서 타락한 것들을 다시 새로 고치셔서, 이 땅을 신자들이 주님과 함께 살 새로우면서도 친숙한 곳으로 만드실 것입니다.

생각해보니 얼마나 놀라운 진리인가요. 새롭고, 새롭게 되고, 친숙하고, 아름다운 땅. 장엄한 하나님의 솜씨를 상상해보십시오!

Old Yet New

In 2014, a sinkhole opened up under the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky, swallowing eight vintage, irreplaceable Chevrolet Corvette sports cars. The automobiles were severely damaged—some beyond repair.

One car in particular received a lot of attention. The one-millionth Corvette, which rolled off the assembly line in 1992, was the most valuable in the collection. What happened to that gem after it was pulled from the sinkhole is fascinating. Experts restored the car to mint condition, mainly by using and repairing its original parts. Although this little beauty was in horrible shape, it now looks as good as it did the day it was built.

The old and damaged was made new.

This is a great reminder of what God has in store for believers in Jesus. In Revelation 21:1, John spoke of seeing “a new heaven and a new earth.” Many biblical scholars see this “new” earth as a renovated earth, for their study of the word new here reveals that it means “fresh” or “restored” after the decay of the old has been wiped away. God will renovate what is corrupt on this earth and provide a fresh, yet familiar place where believers will live with Him.

What an amazing truth to contemplate: a new, refreshed, familiar, and beautiful earth. Imagine the majesty of God’s handiwork! - DAVE BRANON

짐을 내려놓으라

시골길을 운전하던 한 소형트럭 운전수가 무거운 짐을 들고 가던 한 여인을 보고는 멈추어서 그녀에게 태워주겠다고 했습니다. 그 여인은 고맙다고 하면서 트럭 뒤에 올라탔습니다.

얼마 후에 트럭 운전수는 좀 이상한 것을 알아 차렸습니다. 그 여인이 차에 앉아 있음에도 불구하고 여전히 무거운 짐을 들고 있는 것이었습니다! 트럭 운전수는 놀라서 “아주머니, 짐을 내려놓으시고 편히 쉬세요. 제 차가 아주머니와 짐을 운반할 것이니 그냥 편하게 계세요.”라고 말했습니다.

삶의 많은 도전들을 통과하면서 우리가 종종 짊어지는 두려움과 불안과 염려의 짐을 우리는 어떻게 처리합니까? 나는 주님 안에서 편히 쉬는 대신에 때때로 그 여인처럼 행동합니다. 예수님은 “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라”(마태복음 11:28)고 말씀하셨지만, 예수님께 맡겨야 할 짐들을 나 스스로 붙잡고 있었던 것입니다.

기도로 주님께 우리의 짐을 가져가면 우리는 짐을 내려놓을 수 있습니다. 베드로 사도는 “너희 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 너희를 돌보심이라”(베드로전서 5:7)라고 말합니다. 주님께서 우리를 돌보시고
계시기 때문에 우리는 주님을 신뢰하면서 편히 쉴 수 있습니다. 우리를 억누르고 지치게 하는 짐들을 지고 가는 대신에, 우리는 그 짐들을 주님께 맡겨 주님이 대신 지고 가게 할 수 있습니다.

Put Down Your Burdens

A man driving his pickup truck on a country track saw a woman carrying a heavy load, so he stopped and offered her a lift. The woman expressed her gratitude and climbed into the back of the truck.

A moment later, the man noticed a strange thing: the woman was still holding onto her heavy load despite sitting in the vehicle! Astonished, he pleaded, “Please, Madam, put down your load and take your rest. My truck can carry you and your stuff. Just relax.”

What do we do with the load of fear, worry, and anxiety we often carry as we go through life's many challenges? Instead of relaxing in the Lord, I sometimes behave like that woman. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (MATT. 11:28), yet I've caught myself carrying burdens I should offload onto Jesus.

We put down our burdens when we bring them to the Lord in prayer. The apostle Peter says, “Cast all your anxiety on [Jesus] because he cares for you” (1 PETER 5:7). Because He cares for us, we can rest and relax as we learn to trust Him. Instead of carrying the burdens that weigh us down and weary us, we can give them to the Lord and let Him carry them. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

우리의 공급원

2010년 8월 칠레의 코피아포 인근의 한 탄광 갱도에 전 세계의 이목이 집중되었습니다. 서른 세 명의 광부들이 2300피트(약 700 미터) 지하에 갇혀 어둠 속에 몸을 웅크리고 있었습니다. 그들은 구조될 수 있을지 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 구조를 기다린 지 17일째 되던 날 구멍을 뚫는 소리가 들렸습니다. 구조대가 갱도 천장에 작은 구멍 하나를 뚫었고, 이내 구멍은 세 개가 더 늘어나 물과 음식, 약품을 전달하는 통로가 되었습니다. 광부들은 그들의 생존에 필요한 물품을 가지고 있는 구조대가 있는 땅위로 통하는 그 구멍에 의존하여 지냈습니다. 69일째 되던 날 마지막 광부가 구조대에 의해 안전하게 구출되었습니다.

우리는 우리 외부로부터 공급 받지 못하면 이 세상에서 살 수 없습니다. 우주의 창조주이신 하나님은 우리에게 필요한 모든 것을 공급해주시는 분이십니다. 갇혀있던 광부들을 위한 드릴 구멍처럼 기도는 모든 것을 공급하시는 하나님께 우리를 연결해줍니다.

예수님은 “우리에게 일용할 양식을 주옵소서”(마태복음 6:11)라고 기도하라고 권고하십니다. 주님 당시에 빵은 가장 기본적인 주식이었고, 사람들의 매일의 삶에 필요한 모든 것이었습니다. 예수님은 우리의
육체적인 필요뿐 아니라, 위로나 치유, 용기, 지혜 같이 우리에게 필요한 모든 것들을 위해서도 기도하라고 가르치셨습니다.

기도를 통해 우리는 어느 순간에도 주님께 나아갈 수 있으며, 주님은 이미 우리가 구하기도 전에 우리에게 있어야 할 것을 아십니다 (8절). 당신은 오늘 무엇 때문에 힘들어하십니까? “여호와께서는 자기에게 간구하는 모든 자에게 가까이 하시는도다”(시편 145:18).

Our Source of Provision

In August 2010, the attention of the world was focused on a mine shaft near Copiapó, Chile. Thirty-three miners huddled in the dark, trapped 2,300 feet underground. They had no idea if help would ever arrive. After seventeen days of waiting, they heard drilling. Rescuers produced a small hole in the mine shaft ceiling, and that hole was followed by three more, establishing a delivery path for water, food, and medicine. The miners depended on those conduits to the surface above ground, where rescuers had the provisions they would need to survive. On day sixty-nine, rescuers pulled the last miner to safety.

None of us can survive in this world apart from provisions that are outside of ourselves. God, the Creator of the universe, is the one who provides us with everything we need. Like the drill holes for those miners, prayer connects us to the God of all supply.

Jesus encouraged us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread” (MATT. 6:11). In His day, bread was the basic staple of life and pictured all the daily needs of the people. Jesus was teaching us to pray not only for our physical needs but also for everything we need—comfort, healing, courage, wisdom.

Through prayer we have access to Him at any moment, and He knows what we need before we even ask (V. 8). What might you be struggling with today? “The Lord is near to all who call on him” (PS. 145:18). - BILL CROWDER

찬양을 받으실 분

많은 말구유 장면들은 동방박사들이 목자들과 같은 시간에 베들레헴에 계신 예수님을 찾아간 것으로 묘사하고 있습니다. 그러나 동방박사들의 이야기가 성경에 유일하게 기록된 마태복음을 보면 그들은 나중에 등장합니다. 예수님은 더 이상 여관 마구간의 말구유에 누워있지 않고 집 안에 계셨습니다. 마태복음 2장 11절에는 “집에 들어가 아기와 그의 어머니 마리아가 함께 있는 것을 보고 엎드려 아기께 경배하고 보배합을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드리니라”라고 기록되어 있습니다.

동방박사의 방문이 우리가 생각하는 것보다 뒤에 일어났다는 것을 알고, 우리가 새해를 시작할 때 그 사실을 기억하면 도움이 됩니다. 예수님은 언제나 경배 받으실만한 분입니다. 연말연시의 휴가가 지나가고 매일의 일상으로 돌아올 때에도 우리에겐 여전히 찬양드릴 분이 있습니다.

예수 그리스도는 모든 계절에 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다” (마태복음 1:23)를 뜻하는 임마누엘이 되십니다. 주님은 우리와 “항상” 함께 있으리라고 약속하셨습니다(28:20). 예수님이 우리와 항상 함께 계시기 때문에, 우리는 다가올 많은 날 동안 주님께서 자신을 신실하게 보여주실 것을 믿으며 매일 전심으로 주님을 예배할 수 있습니다. 동방박사들이 예수님을 찾았던 것처럼 우리도 어디에서나 주님을 찾고 경배해야 합니다.

Someone to Celebrate

Many manger scenes depict the wise men, or magi, visiting Jesus in Bethlehem at the same time as the shepherds. But according to the gospel of Matthew, the only place in Scripture where their story is found, the magi showed up later. Jesus was no longer in the manger in a stable at the inn, but in a house. Matthew 2:11 tells us, “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”

Realizing that the magi’s visit happened later than we may think provides a helpful reminder as we begin a new year. Jesus is always worthy of worship. When the holidays are past and we head back to
life’s everyday routines, we still have Someone to celebrate.

Jesus Christ is Immanuel, “God with us” (MATT. 1:23), in every season. He has promised to be with us “always” (28:20). Because He is always with us, we can worship Him in our hearts every day and trust that He will show Himself faithful in the years to come. Just as the magi sought Him, may we seek Him too and worship Him wherever we are. - JAMES BANKS

하나님께 귀 기울이기

어린 우리 아들은 내 목소리 듣는 걸 좋아하지만 “너 어디 있어?”라고 물으며 크고 엄한 소리로 자기 이름을 부를 때는 예외입니다. 내가 보통 이렇게 부를 때는 아이가 뭔가 사고를 치고 나에게서 숨으려고 하는 경우이기 때문입니다. 나는 우리 아들이 안전하길 원하고 다치지 않기를 바라기 때문에 아이가 내 목소리에 귀 기울였으면 좋겠습니다.

아담과 하와는 동산에서 하나님의 음성을 늘 들었을 것입니다. 하지만 금지된 열매를 먹음으로 하나님을 거역한 후, 하나님께서 “네가 어디 있느냐”(창세기 3:9) 라고 부르실 때 하나님을 피하여 숨었습니다.
그들은 하나님이 하지 말라고 명하신 일을 한 잘못을 저지른 것을 알았기 때문에 하나님과 대면하기를 원치 않았습니다(11절).

하나님은 아담과 하와를 불러 동산에서 찾으시고, 그들의 잘못을 바로잡고 잘못에 대한 대가를 말씀하셨습니다(13-19절). 하지만 하나님은 동시에 그들에게 자비를 베푸시며, 구세주의 약속으로 인류를 향한 소망도 보여주셨습니다(15절).

하나님은 우리를 찾으실 필요가 없습니다. 하나님은 우리가 어디에 있는지 무엇을 감추려고 하는지 모두 아십니다. 하지만 사랑의 아버지 되시는 하나님은 우리의 마음에 말씀하시고 우리에게 용서와 회복을
가져다주시기를 바라십니다. 하나님은 우리가 하나님의 목소리를 듣고 귀 기울이기를 간절히 바라십니다.

Listening to God

My young son loves to hear my voice, except when I call his name loudly and sternly, followed by the question, “Where are you?” When I do that, I am usually calling for him because he has been into some mischief and is trying to hide from me. I want my son to listen to my voice because I’m concerned about his well-being and do not want him to get hurt.

Adam and Eve were used to hearing God’s voice in the garden. However, after they disobeyed Him by eating the forbidden fruit, they hid from Him when they heard Him calling, “Where are you?” (GEN. 3:9). They didn’t want to face God because they knew they had done something wrong—something He had told them not to do (V. 11).

When God called for Adam and Eve and found them in the garden, His words did include correction and consequence (VV. 13–19). But God also showed them kindness and gave them hope for mankind in the promise of the Savior (V. 15).

God doesn’t have to look for us. He knows where we are and what we are trying to hide. But as a loving Father, He wants to speak to our hearts and bring us forgiveness and restoration. He longs for us to hear His voice—and to listen. - KEILA OCHOA

배가 된 사랑

캐런의 교회에 다니는 한 여성이 ALS(루게릭병으로 알려진 근위축성 측색 경화증) 진단을 받았을 때 상황이 참 좋지 않아 보였습니다. 이 무서운 병은 신경과 근육에 영향을 미쳐 결국은 마비에 이르게 합니다. 가족들이 가입한 보험은 집에서의 간호 경비를 부담해주지 않았고, 그녀의 남편은 아내를 요양원에 보낼 걸 생각하며 견디기 힘들어했습니다.

간호사인 캐런은 도울 수 있는 전문지식이 있었기에 그녀를 돌보기 위해 그녀의 집을 방문하기 시작했습니다. 그런데 친구를 돌보는 동안 정작 자신의 가족을 돌볼 수 없음을 곧 깨닫게 된 캐런은 교회의 다른 사람들도 도울 수 있도록 가르치기 시작했습니다. 캐런은 서른 한 명의 자원봉사자들을 훈련하여 병이 진전되는 7년 동안 사랑과 기도와 실질적인 도움으로 그 가족을 돌보게 하였습니다.

“하나님을 사랑하는 자는 또한 그 형제를 사랑할지니라”(요한1서 4:21)라고 예수님의 제자 요한은 말했습니다. 캐런은 우리에게 그런 사랑의 빛나는 모범을 제시해줍니다. 그녀에게는 아파하는 친구를 위해 교회 가족을 결집시키는 기술과 동정심, 그리고 비전이 있었습니다. 어려움에 처한 한 사람에 대한 그녀의 사랑은 많은 이들이 실천하여 배가된 사랑이 되었습니다.

A Multiplied Love

When a woman in Karen’s church was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), things looked bad. This cruel disease affects nerves and muscles, eventually leading to paralysis. The family’s insurance wouldn’t cover home care, and the stricken woman’s husband couldn’t bear the thought of putting her in a nursing home.

As a nurse, Karen had the expertise to help and began going to the woman’s home to care for her. But she soon realized she couldn’t take care of her own family while meeting the needs of her friend, so she started teaching others in the church to help. As the disease ran its course over the next seven years, Karen trained thirty-one additional volunteers who surrounded that family with love, prayer, and practical assistance.

“Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister,” said John the disciple (1 JOHN 4:21). Karen gives us a shining example of that kind of love. She had the skills, compassion, and vision to rally a church family around a hurting friend. Her love for one person in need became a multiplied love lived out by many. - TIM GUSTAFSON

보이는 것이 다 사실은 아니다

단은 스코틀랜드의 사우스라낙셔의 농장에 사는 보더콜리종 개입니다. 어느 날 아침 그와 주인 톰은 몇몇 동물을 돌아보기 위해 나서면서 농장의 소형트럭을 함께 타고 갔습니다. 그들이 도착하고 나서 톰은 차에 브레이크를 거는 것을 잊은 채 차에서 내렸습니다. 차는 단을 운전석에 태운 채 언덕을 굴러 내려가 차선 두개를 가로지른 후 안전하게 멈췄습니다. 다른 운전자들이 보기에는 개가 아침운전을 위해 나온 것 같았을 것입니다. 참으로, 그럴 것이라고 여겨지는 상황이 실제로 모두 그런 것은 아닙니다.

엘리사와 그의 사환은 사로잡혀 아람 왕에게 끌려갈 것 같아 보였습니다. 왕의 군대가 엘리사와 그의 사환이 머무르고 있는 도시를 에워싸고 있었던 것입니다. 사환은 그들이 죽게 되었다고 믿었지만, 엘리사는
“두려워하지 말라 우리와 함께 한 자가 그들과 함께 한 자보다 많으니라” (열왕기하 6:16)라고 말했습니다. 엘리사가 기도하자 사환은 그들을 보호하고 있는 초자연적인 군대의 무리를 볼 수 있었습니다.

절망적으로 보이는 상황들은 우리가 생각하는 것처럼 항상 그렇게 절망적이지 않습니다. 우리가 압도되는 것 같고 열세라고 느껴질 때 하나님이 우리 옆에 계심을 기억해야 합니다. 그분은 “그의 천사들을 명령하사 [우리의] 모든 길에서 [우리를] 지키게”(시편 91:11) 하실 것입니다.

하나님이 우리 옆에 계심을 기억하면 상황은 항상 눈에 보이는 것보다 나아진다.

Not What It Seems

Don is a border collie who lives on a farm in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. One morning, he and his owner, Tom, set out to check on some animals. They rode together in a small farm utility truck. When they arrived, Tom left the vehicle but forgot to put the brake on. With Don in the driver’s seat, the vehicle rolled down a hill and across two lanes of traffic before it stopped safely. To watching motorists, it appeared the dog was out for a morning drive. Indeed, things are not always as they seem.

It seemed as if Elisha and his servant were about to be captured and carried off to the King of Aram. The king’s forces had surrounded the city where Elisha and his servant were staying. The servant believed they were doomed, but Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid . . . . Those who are with us are more than those who are with [the enemy]” (2 KINGS 6:16). When Elisha prayed, the servant was able to see the multitudes of supernatural forces that were in place to protect them.

Situations that seem hopeless are not always the way we perceive them to be. When we feel overwhelmed and outnumbered, we can remember that God is by our side. He can “command his angels . . . to guard [us] in all [our] ways” (PS. 91:11). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

완전한 선물

미국에서 성탄절 이후 몇 주간은 마음에 들지 않는 선물을 본인들이 원하는 것으로 바꾸기 위해 상품을 반환하느라 일 년 중 가장 바쁜 시기입니다. 그럼에도 아마 당신 주위에는 언제나 완벽한 선물을 주는 것 같은 사람이 몇 명 있을 것입니다. 다른 사람들이 좋아하고 상황에 꼭 맞는 선물이 무엇인지 어떻게 알 수 있을까요? 선물을 성공적으로 주기 위한 중요한 비결은 돈이 아닙니다. 다른 사람들이 이야기하는 것을 듣고 그들이 즐기고 감사하는 것이 무엇인가에 대해 개인적으로 관심을 갖는 것입니다.

이것은 가족과 친구들에게도 마찬 가지입니다. 하지만 하나님에 관하여는 어떻습니까? 우리가 하나님께 드릴 수 있는 의미 있고 귀중한 것에는 무엇이 있을까요? 하나님이 이미 갖지 못하신 것이 있을까요?

로마서 11:33-36은 측량 못할 하나님의 지혜와 지식과 영광을 찬양합니다. 그러고는 하나님께 우리를 드리라는 요구가 바로 이어 나옵니다. “그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라”(12:1). 우리는 주위의 세상풍습대로 사는 것이 아니라 “[우리의] 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아야”(2절) 합니다.

오늘 우리가 하나님께 드릴 수 있는 가장 좋은 선물이 무엇일까요? 우리는 감사와 겸손과 사랑으로 우리의 마음과 성품과 의지를 포함하는 우리 자신을 온전히 하나님께 드릴 수 있습니다. 그것이 바로 주님께서 우리 각자로부터 받기 원하시는 것입니다.

The Perfect Gift

The weeks after Christmas are the busiest time of year in the US for merchandise returns as people trade unwanted gifts for what they really want. Yet you probably know a few people who always seem to give the perfect gift. How do they know just what another person values and what is right for the occasion? The key to successful gift-giving is not money; it’s listening to others and taking a personal interest in what they enjoy and appreciate.

This is true for family and friends. But what about God? Is there anything meaningful or valuable that we can give to God? Is there anything He doesn’t already have?

Romans 11:33–36, a song of praise to God for His great wisdom, knowledge, and glory, is followed by a call to give ourselves to Him. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (12:1). Instead of being shaped by the world around us, we are to be “transformed by the renewing of [our] mind” (V. 2).

What’s the best gift we can give to God today? In gratitude, humility, and love we can give ourselves completely to Him—heart, mind, and will. It’s just what the Lord is longing to receive from each of us. - DAVID MCCASLAND

감사하는 삶

성숙한 영적인 삶과 더욱더 감사하는 삶을 살기 원하여 수는 ‘감사하는 삶의 항아리’라는 것을 시작하였습니다. 그녀는 매일 저녁마다 하나님께 감사제목 하나를 조그만 쪽지에 적어서 항아리에 집어넣었습니다. 어느 날에는 많은 찬양과 감사가 있었고 힘들었던 날에는 감사제목을 찾기가 어려웠습니다. 연말에 항아리를 비우며 모든 쪽지를 읽으면서 그녀는 하나님이 그녀에게 베풀어주신 모든 것에 대해 다시 한 번 감사하였습니다. 하나님은 아름다운 저녁노을이나 공원에서 산책하기 좋은 서늘한 저녁을 주시기도 했고, 어려운 상황을 잘 극복하도록 은혜를 베푸시거나 기도에 응답해주시기도 했습니다.

수의 발견은 시편기자 다윗이 자신의 경험을 이야기하는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다(시편 23). 하나님은 “푸른 초장”과 “잔잔한 물가”에서 (2-3절) 그의 기운을 새롭게 해주셨으며, 그를 인도하시고 보호하시고 위로해주셨습니다(3-4절). 다윗은 “내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니”(6절)라고 결론을 지었습니다.

나도 새해에는 ‘감사하는 삶의 항아리’를 준비하려고 합니다. 아마 당신도 그렇게 하고 싶을 것입니다. 우리는 하나님께서 선물로 주신 친구들과 가족, 그리고 우리의 육신적 영적 정서적 필요를 위해 하나님이 공급해주신 것 등, 하나님께 감사해야 할 많은 이유가 있음을 알게 될 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 선하심과 인자하심이 평생 우리를 따른다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.

Thanks Living

Wanting to mature in her spiritual life and become more thankful, Sue started what she called a Thanks Living jar. Each evening she wrote on a small piece of paper one thing she thanked God for and dropped it in the jar. Some days she had many praises; other difficult days she struggled to find one. At the end of the year she emptied her jar and read through all of the notes. She found herself thanking God again for everything He had done. He had given simple things like a beautiful sunset or a cool evening for a walk in the park, and other times He had provided grace to handle a difficult situation or had answered a prayer.

Sue’s discovery reminded me of what the psalmist David says he experienced (PS. 23). God refreshed him with “green pastures” and “quiet waters” (VV. 2–3). He gave him guidance, protection, and comfort (VV. 3–4). David concluded: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life” (V. 6).

I’m going to make a Thanks-Living jar this year. Maybe you’d like to as well. I think we’ll see we have many reasons to thank God—including His gifts of friends and family and His provisions for our physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. We’ll see that the goodness and love of God follows us all the days of our lives. - ANNE CETAS
