받은 복을 세어보라

어린 소녀 시절, 저는 오래된 찬송가 “받은 복을 세어보아라”를 특히 좋아했습니다. 이 찬송은 “풍파에 흔들리는” 이들과 “모든 것을 잃었다고 낙심하는” 이들에게 “받은 복을 하나씩 이름을 불러가며 세어보라”고 격려합니다. 여러 해가 지나 결혼한 후 남편 앨런이 낙심될 때면 종종 제게 그 찬송을 불러 달라고 했습니다. 그러면 나는 그가 받은 축복들을 하나씩 세어보도록 도와주곤 했습니다. 그렇게 함으로써 남편은 자신의 고민과 자기 의심에서 벗어나 자기 생각을 하나님에게 집중하면서 하나님께 감사할 이유 들을 찾았습니다.

에스라서는 하나님의 백성들이 채워 주시는 하나님의 능력에 초점을 맞춰 감당하기 어려운 난관과 맞서는 모습을 담고 있습니다. 그들이 바벨론에서 수십 년 포로 생활을 견뎌낸 후, 고레스 왕은 유다 포로들이 이스라엘로 돌아가 성전을 재건하도록 허락했습니다(에스라 1-2). 단지 일부 사람들만 귀환했는데도(2:64), “주변 민족들에 대한 두려움”과 그들 앞에 놓인 거대한 과제에도 불구하고 이스라엘 백성들은 제단을 다시 세우고 성전의 기초를 놓았습니다(3:3, 10). 그 후 “여호와께 감사와 찬양드리며 이렇게 노래하였습니다. ‘여호와는 선하시며 이스라엘에 대한 그의 사랑은 영원하다!’ 그러자 모든 백성들은 성전 기초를 놓은 기쁨 때문에 큰 소리로 여호와를 찬양하였습니다”(3:11, 현대인의 성경).

만약 당신이 낙심되거나 넘을 수 없을 것 같은 장애물에 부딪혀 있다면, 생각을 하나님께로 향해 보십시오. “받은 복을 세어 보십시오. 그러면 지금까지 하나님이 하신 일을 보고 놀라게 될 것이며”, 하나님을 사랑하는 자들을 위해 하나님이 지금도 계속 일하시는 것에 놀랄 것입니다.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

When I was a little girl, I loved the old hymn “Count Your Blessings.” The song encourages those who are “tempesttossed” and “thinking all is lost” to “count your blessings, name them one by one.” Years later when my husband, Alan, was discouraged, he would often ask me to sing that simple song to him. Then I would help him to enumerate his blessings. Doing so took Alan’s focus off his struggles and self-doubt and centered his thoughts on God and his reasons for thankfulness.

The book of Ezra describes God’s people facing overwhelming challenges through focusing on God’s power and provision. After they’d endured decades of captivity in Babylon, King Cyrus allowed the Jewish exiles to return to Israel to rebuild the temple (EZRA 1-2). Only a fraction returned (2:64). Despite their “fear of the peoples around them” and the great task before them, they rebuilt the altar and laid the temple’s foundation (3:3, 10). Then “with praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord: ‘He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.’ And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord” (3:11).

If you’re discouraged or facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles, turn your thoughts toward God. “Count your blessings . . . and it will surprise you what the Lord has done,” and continues to do, for those who love Him.

하나님의 도움을 구하라

어렸을 때 나는 글쓰기 마감일을 맞추게 해달라고 하나님께 도움을 구하는 것이 적절하지 않다고 생각했습니다. ‘딴 사람들은 나보다 더 큰 도움이 필요할 거야.’ 스스로 그렇게 생각했던 것입니다. 이를테면, 가족 문제, 건강 위기, 직장에서의 실망, 재정적 어려움 같은 문제들 말입니다. 나도 그런 문제들을 겪어보았지만, 글쓰기 마감 같은 일을 하나님께 가져가기에는 너무 사소해 보였습니다. 그러나 사람들이 직면한 문제의 크기와 상관없이 하나님이 도우시는 여러 예를 성경에서 발견한 이후 내 생각은 달라졌습니다.

한 성경 이야기를 보면, 이스라엘 백성들은 미스바에서 그들의 적인 블레셋 사람들의 공격을 받아 절망에 빠졌습니다. “이스라엘 자손이 사무엘에게 이르되 당신은 우리를 위하여 우리 하나님 여호와께 쉬지 말고 부르짖어 우리를 블레셋 사람들의 손에서 구원하시게 하소서”(사무엘상 7:8). 이에 사무엘이 어린 양 하나를 가져다가 여호와께 제사드리고 이스라엘을 위하여 여호와께 부르짖으니 “여호와께서 응답하셨습니다”(9절).

“사무엘이 번제를 드릴 때에 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 가까이 오매 그 날에 여호와께서 블레셋 사람에게 큰 우레를 발하여 그들을 어지럽게 하시니 그들이 이스라엘 앞에 패한지라”(10절).

그 이후에 “사무엘이 돌을 취하여 미스바와 센 사이에 세워 이르되 여호와 께서 여기까지 우리를 도우셨다 하고 그 이름을 에벤에셀이라 하였습니다” (12절). 사무엘은 하나님께서 그의 백성을 도우신 것을 기념하기 위하여 그 돌을 세웠습니다. 에벤에셀은 “도움의 돌”이라는 뜻입니다.

우리가 하나님께 도움을 구하는 것은 어느 때나 올바른 일입니다. 오늘 하나님께 부르짖어 봅시다.

ASKING FOR GOD’S HELP

When I was younger, I thought it improper to ask God to help me meet writing deadlines. Other people have greater needs, I told myself. Family problems. Health crises. Job letdowns. Financial needs. I’ve faced all those things too. But meeting a writing deadline seemed too small to take to God. I changed my view, however, after finding multiple examples in the Bible of God helping people regardless of the challenge they faced.

In one story, the Israelites were dismayed because they faced an attack at Mizpah by their enemies, the Philistines. “[The Israelites] said to Samuel, ‘Do not stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines’ ” (1 SAMUEL 7:8). In response, Samuel sacrificed a lamb to God, crying out to Him on Israel’s behalf, “and the Lord answered him” (V. 9).

“While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites” (V. 10).

Later, “Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us’ ” (V. 12). Samuel placed the stone to commemorate God helping His people. Ebenezer means “stone of help.”

Asking God for help is always proper. Let’s call out to Him today.

기다림 속의 소망

알리다는 2020년에 DNA 검사를 통해 미국 반대편 해안에 사는 한 남자와 상당히 일치한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 나중에 알리다와 그 딸들은 1950년대의 신문 기사들을 찾아 보고 그 남자가 알리다의 오랫동안 잃어버린 삼촌 루이스라는 결론을 내리게 되었습니다! 루이스 삼촌은 1951년 여섯 살 때 공원에서 납치되었던 것입니다. 루이스가 실종된 지 70년이 지나 행해진 그 DNA 검사로 그는 결국 그의 친가족과 행복하게 다시 만날 수 있었습니다. 알리다는 말합니다. “[우리의] 이야기가 다른 가족들에게도 도움이 될 수 있을 거예요... 포기하지 말라고 말씀드리고 싶어요.”

희망을 계속 간직하기에는 칠십 년은 긴 시간입니다. 예레미야와 유다 백성들은 하나님께서 그들이 “칠십 년 동안 바벨론의 왕을 섬기리라”고 말씀 하셨을 때 마음이 아프고 두려웠을 것입니다(예레미야 25:11). 그러나 그들은 하나님께 순종하지 않고 “악한 길과 악행”에서 돌이키지 않았으며(5절), 그로 인해 “놀램과 비웃음 거리가 되었습니다”(9절). 예레미야서를 보면 백성들이 하나님께 순종하지 않아 서른 번 이상 책망을 받습니다. 칠십 년이 영원처럼 느껴졌을지 모르지만, 하나님은 그들과 함께 하셨고 그 어려운 시기가 결국 끝날 것이라고 약속하셨습니다(29:10).

끝없이 이어지는 듯한 힘든 시기를 겪을 때 하나님을 신뢰하기가 힘들지 몰라도, 하나님께서 우리와 함께 하시며 우리를 사랑하신다는 약속을 잊지 맙시다(30:11). 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 기대하며 기다릴 때 우리는 소망을 가질 수 있습니다.

HOPE IN THE WAITING

Alida took a DNA test in 2020 and discovered a strong match to a man living on the opposite coast of the US. Later, she and her daughters found news articles from the 1950s that led them to conclude that the man was Alida’s long-lost uncle, Luis! He’d been abducted from a park in 1951 when he was six years old. That DNA test, taken seventy years after Luis’ disappearance, eventually led to a happy reunion with his biological family members. Alida said, “With [our] story out there, it could help other families . . . . I would say, don’t give up.”

Seventy years is a long time to keep hope alive. Jeremiah and the people of Judah must have been heartbroken and fearful when God said they would “serve the king of Babylon seventy years” (JEREMIAH 25:11). But they hadn’t listened to God and turned from their “evil ways and . . . practices” (V. 5), which had deformed them into “an object of horror and scorn” (V. 9). The people were condemned more than thirty times in Jeremiah for not listening to Him. Seventy years might have felt like forever, but God would be with them, and He promised that the hard season would eventually end (29:10).

As we face challenging seasons that seem to go on and on, let’s remember that while we may struggle to trust God, He promises that He’s with us and loves us (30:11). As we listen to Him and wait expectantly, we can find hope.

그리스도 안에서의 우리의 가치

절도죄로 감옥에 갇힌 스물여덟 살의 마리오는 코카인 마약과 알콜 중독자 였습니다. 선고 당시 판사는 그를 “인생 쓰레기”라고 했으며 마리오도 체념한 듯 이를 인정했습니다. 수감생활 중간쯤, 그는 저널리즘 경연대회 광고를 보고 그 일에 관심이 끌렸습니다. 마리오는 근처에 있는 대학에 등록한 후 바로 저널리즘 수업에 빠져들었습니다. 마리오는 뉴스 기사 작성을 좋아했고, 출소 후 저널리즘 석사 학위를 마치고 지금은 ‘뉴욕 타임스’ 신문에 글을 쓰고 있습니다. 그는 이제 더 이상 인생 쓰레기가 아닙니다!

무덤 사이에서 살던 귀신 들린 사람의 삶은 그를 아는 모든 사람들에게 인생 쓰레기처럼 보였습니다. 이웃들은 그와 자신들을 보호하기 위해 그를 쇠사슬로 묶었지만, 그는 “쇠사슬을 끊고 고랑을 깨뜨렸습니다”(마가복음 5:4). 그는 다시 무덤으로 달려가 “밤낮... 늘 소리 지르며 돌로 자기 몸을 해치고 있었습니다”(5 절). 그러던 사람이 완전히 변화되었습니다.

예수님은 그 사람에게서 귀신들을 쫓아내시고 그를 온전한 사회의 일원으로 돌려보내셨습니다. 마을 사람들은 그가 “옷을 입고 정신이 온전하여 앉은 것을 보고” 놀랐습니다(15절). 감사한 마음을 가진 그 사람은 예수님을 따라다니고 싶어했지만, 예수님은 허락하지 않으시고 “집으로 돌아가 주께서 네게 어떻게 큰 일을 행하사 너를 불쌍히 여기신 것을 네 가족에게 알리라”(19 절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

이 사람의 사명이 바로 우리의 사명입니다. 우리도 그리스도에 대해 다른 사람들에게 알리도록 합시다. 예수님 덕분에 어느 누구의 삶도 낭비가 아닙니다.

OUR WORTH IN CHRIST

Mario was a twenty-eight-year-old crack and alcohol addict who was imprisoned for burglary. At his sentencing the judge said he was “a waste of a human life.” Mario sadly agreed. Midway through his jail time he saw an advertisement for a journalism contest. It piqued Mario’s interest, and he enrolled in a nearby university. He was hooked. Mario loved working on news stories, and after his release he finished his master’s degree in journalism and now writes for The New York Times. He’s a waste no more!

The life of the demon-possessed man living in the tombs seemed a waste to anyone who knew him. His neighbors bound him with chains for their protection and his, but “he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet” (MARK 5:4). He ran back to the tombs where “night and day . . . he would cry out and cut himself with stones” (V. 5). Then he was changed forever.

Jesus cast out the man’s demons and returned him to normal society. The town was amazed to find him “sitting there, dressed and in his right mind” (V. 15). The grateful man wanted to sail away with Christ, but He said no. “Go home to your own people,” said Jesus, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you” (V. 19).

This man’s mission is our mission. Let’s tell others about Christ. Because of Him, no one’s life is a waste.

우리 아빠는 런던에서 열린 어느 파티에서 처음 엄마와 눈이 마주쳤습니다. 그리고 단지 엄마를 만나기 위해 두번째 파티에 초청도 받지 않은 채 찾아갔고, 직접 세번째 파티를 주최했습니다. 마침내 아빠는 자신의 소중한 재산인 구형 로버 세단에 엄마를 태워 시골로 드라이브를 갔습니다.

엄마와 아빠는 연인이 되었지만 문제가 있었습니다. 엄마는 선교사가 되기 위해 페루로 이사하려던 참이었습니다. 아빠는 엄마를 공항으로 배웅해주고 나서 다섯 달 뒤에 직접 페루로 찾아가 엄마에게 청혼했습니다. 이 이야기에서 가장 재미있는 부분이 무엇인지 아십니까? 아빠는 자기가 그토록 아끼던 로버 세단 차를 팔아 페루 행 비행기 표를 구입했다는 것입니다.

만일 당신이 마르다와 나사로의 여동생인 마리아에게 가진 것 중에 가장 소중한 물건이 무엇이냐고 물어봤다면, 마리아는 “지극히 비싼 향유” (요한복음 12:3)가 담긴 소중한 병 하나를 보여주었을 것입니다. 그리고 당신이 마리아와 마르다가 예수님을 위해 벌인 잔치(2절)에 참석하여 마리아가 예수님의 발에 그 병에 담긴 향유를 아끼지 않고 붓는 것을 지켜보았다면, 마리아에게 그리스도께서 어떤 의미를 지닌 분이셨는지 알 수 있었을 것입니다. 예수님은 ‘그렇게’ 귀한 분이셨고 ‘그렇게’ 가치 있는 분이셨습니다.

엄마에게는 아빠가 차를 판 것이 단지 비행기 표를 사기 위한 것만이 아니었습니다. 그것은 아버지가 어머니를 얼마나 소중히 여겼는지를 보여주는 표시였습니다. 그리고 마리아의 그런 행동도 예수님의 장례를 준비하는 보다 심오한 의미가 있었습니다(7절). 마리아처럼 우리가 가장 소중히 여기는 것을 하나님께 드릴 때 우리는 우리를 위한 예수님의 크신 희생을 본받아 주님의 구원사역에 동참하게 되는 것입니다.

TREASURED POSSESSION

My father first locked eyes on my mother at a party in London. Next he gate-crashed a second party, then organized a third, just to see her again. Finally he asked Mum out for a country drive, picking her up in his old Rover sedan—his treasured possession.

Mum and Dad became sweethearts, but there was a problem. Mum was about to move to Peru to become a missionary. Dad took her to the airport, then five months later arrived in Peru himself—to propose to her. And the best part of the story? He’d sold his beloved Rover to pay for the plane ticket.

If you would’ve asked Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, what her most treasured possession was, she’d have shown you a precious bottle of “expensive perfume” (JOHN 12:3). And if you’d have been at the party she and Martha threw for Jesus (V. 2) and watched her lavish that bottle’s contents on his feet, you’d have known just what Christ meant to her. He was that precious, that valuable.

For my mother, Dad selling his car wasn’t just about a plane ticket. It was a sign of how much he valued her. And Mary’s actions had deeper meaning too—she was preparing Jesus for His burial (V. 7). Like her, when we sacrifice for God what we treasure most, we take part in His redemptive work by echoing His great sacrifice for us.

우리를 지켜 주시는 하나님

조종사 두 명이 모두 인도네시아 상공을 비행하던 중 잠이 들었습니다. 원래 기장은 비행기가 순항 고도에 도달하면 한 번 잠깐 잠을 잘 수 있는데, 그가 잠에서 깨어보니 부조종사도 함께 잠들었다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 두 사람은 함께 약 30분 동안 150명 이상의 승객과 승무원을 태우고 고도 약 36,000피트(약 11킬로미터) 상공에서 잠들었던 것입니다. 비행기는 항로를 벗어났었지만 다행히 목적지에 안전하게 도착했습니다.

인간 조종사들은 비행 중에 잠깐 잠을 잘 수도 있지만, 하나님은 결코 주무시지 않는다는 사실에 우리는 안심할 수 있습니다.

이것이 시편 121편의 말씀이 우리에게 주는 위로입니다. 이 시편의 여덟 구절에서, 하나님은 전지하셔서 우리 삶의 모든 것을 아시고, 어디나 계셔서 온 종일 우리와 함께하시며, 전능하셔서 모든 능력으로 우리를 보호하실 수 있음을 상기시켜 줍니다. 시편 기자는 우리의 도움이 여호와로부터 나온다고 선언합니다 (2절). 하나님은 우리의 보호자시요 그늘이시며(5절), 모든 악으로부터 우리를 지켜 우리의 영혼을 보존해 주십니다(7절).

하나님이 우리를 잊으신 것은 아닌지 의심이 들 때, 우리는 하나님께서 모든 것을 주관하고 계시다는 사실에 안심할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 항상 깨어 있어 우리를 지켜 주고 계십니다.

GOD WATCHES OVER US

Two pilots fell asleep in the middle of their flight over Indonesia. While the commanding pilot had permission to nap once the plane reached cruising altitude, he woke up to find that his co-pilot had also dozed off. The two were asleep for about thirty minutes with more than 150 passengers and crew on board and while at approximately 36,000 feet altitude. The plane had veered off course, but thankfully the plane still arrived at its destination safely.

Human pilots may snooze mid-flight, but we can rest assured that God never falls asleep.

This is the comfort offered to us in the words of Psalm 121. In eight verses, we’re reminded that God is omniscient, or allknowing about our life; omnipresent, or present all throughout our day; and omnipotent, or all-powerful and can protect us. The psalmist declares that our help comes from God (V. 2). He is our keeper and shade (V. 5), and He guards us from all evil while preserving our soul (V. 7).

God never gets tired. “He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber” (V. 3). “The Lord will watch over your coming and going,” the psalmist concludes “both now and forevermore” (V. 8).

When we’re wondering if God has forgotten us, we can rest assured that He’s at the wheel. He’s always awake and watching over us.

가면 증후군

혹시 자신이 사기꾼처럼 느껴진 적이 있습니까? 당신만 그런 것이 아닙니다! 1970년대 후반, 두 연구자는 자신의 기술이나 재능, 또는 능력을 의심하고 자신을 사기꾼으로 여기는 상태를 “가면 증후군” 이라고 정의했습니다. 성공하고 뛰어난 사람들조차 자신의 부족함과 싸우며, 누군가 자신의 삶의 뒷면을 엿보고 자신이 얼마나 모르는 것이 많은지 알게 될까 걱정합니다.

IMPOSTER SYNDROME

Do you ever feel like a fraud? You aren’t alone! In the late 1970s, two researchers identified “imposter syndrome” as the condition of doubting one’s skills, talents, or abilities and interpreting oneself as a fraud. Even successful and brilliant people struggle with inadequacy, worrying that if anyone peeked behind the curtain of their lives, they’d see how much they don’t know.

Paul exhorts the people of the first-century church in Rome to be humble: “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment” (ROMANS 12:3). We understand the importance of not elevating our abilities. But when we doubt our own value, we go too far, robbing others of the gifts God wants us to use to serve Him. To think of ourselves with “sober judgment” (V. 3) is to have a sane estimation—a realistic regard—for what we offer. Paul nudges us to overcome our hesitancies, to embrace who we are “in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of [us]” (V. 3). In this way, God’s body of believers may be built up (VV. 4-8).

Rather than degrading our offerings with imposter syndrome, let’s embrace God’s giftings within us. By gratefully accepting His grace, we can think neither too highly nor too lowly of ourselves. In doing so, we please our Father and build up Christ’s body of believers.

그냥 기도하세요

제가 프리랜서로 일하고 있는 프로젝트가 잘 풀리지 않았습니다. 고객들이 불가능해 보이는 것들을 요구하고 있어서 저는 스트레스를 받고 낙심에 빠져서 그냥 바로 그만두고 싶었습니다. 그 말은 곧 지금까지 한 일에 대해 보수를 받지 못할 뿐만 아니라, 앞으로도 그들에게서 어떤 프로젝트도 다시 받을 가능성이 없어진다는 것을 의미했습니다. 그때 이런 생각이 들었습니다. ‘하나님께 기도해 봤어?’

정신이 번쩍 들면서 저는 그제야 하나님께 도움을 구하는 것을 소홀히 했다는 점을 깨달았습니다! 그래서 기도했습니다... 그러자 즉시 기분이 나아졌습니다. 아무것도 변하지 않았고 프로젝트는 여전히 힘들었지만, 평안이 나를 감싸는 것을 느꼈습니다. 이제 하나님 안에서 안식할 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 저는 제가 할 수 있는 일을 하고 결과는 그분께 맡길 것입니다.

다윗도 자신의 두려움과 염려를 하나님께 맡겼을 때 같은 기분이었을 것입니다. 그는 원수들에게 쫓기는 고통을 묘사하며 시편 6편을 시작합니다 (3, 7절). 그러나 계속해서 하나님께 도움을 구하면서 그는 “여호와께서 나의 부르짖는 소리를 들으셨으며 내 기도를 들어주실 것”(9절, 현대인의 성경)이라는 확신을 느꼈습니다.

그 진실은 하나님의 때에 하나님의 방법으로 그가 구원받을 것이라는 희망과 함께 찾아왔습니다(10절). 기도는 기분 좋게 만드는 기술이 아니라, 그분의 때와 방법으로 우리를 도와주실 전지전능하신 분과 직접 연결해주는 것입니다. 우울하거나 낙심되십니까? 그냥 기도하십시오. 하나님께서 들으십니다.

JUST PRAY

The freelance project wasn’t working out well. The clients were demanding what seemed to be the impossible, and I was stressed and discouraged. My first reaction was just to walk away from it, which would mean not getting paid for the work I’d done—and also eliminating the possibility of future projects with them. Then the thought came to me: Have you prayed to God yet?

Mentally slapping my forehead, I realized that I’d neglected to ask God for help! And so I prayed . . . and immediately felt better. Nothing had changed—the project remained challenging— but I felt peace wash over me. Now I knew I could rest in God: I’d just do whatever I could and leave the outcome to Him.

Perhaps David felt the same way when he submitted his fears and worries to God. In Psalm 6, he starts off describing his anguish at being hounded by his enemies (VV. 3, 7). But as he continued turning to God for help, he felt reassured: “The Lord has heard my cry . . . the Lord accepts my prayer” (V. 9).

That truth came with the hope that he would be delivered, in God’s time and way (V. 10). Prayer isn’t some feel-good technique, but it’s a direct connection with the all-seeing, all-powerful One who will help us in His time and way. Feeling down or discouraged? Just pray—God hears.

예수님과 함께 하는 삶

그리스도인 의사 은티지미라는 그의 고국 르완다의 자원이 부족한 지역에서 말기 환자들을 돌보라고 하나님이 부르시는 것을 느꼈습니다. “말기 환자들은 이미 희망이 없었기” 때문에 동료들은 그들을 돌보는 일의 중요성을 알지 못했습니다. 하지만 은티지미라는 환자들과 그 가족들에게 “모든 희망이 사라진 것처럼 보였을 때 자신이 함께 함으로써 희망을 되살려 주었다” 는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 은티지미라는 “그리스도의 죽음이 생명의 근원이기” 때문에 예수님의 죽음과 생명이 우리가 죽음을 대하는 태도를 변화시킬 수 있다는 확신을 가지고 이 사역에 전념하고 있습니다.

디모데후서에서 바울 사도는 예수님이 “죽음을 폐하시고, 복음으로 생명과 썩지 않음을 환히 보이셨다”(10절, 새번역)는 사실을 알고 나서 고난에 대한 그의 이해가 어떻게 달라졌는지 증언합니다. 바울은 감옥에 갇혀 처형을 앞두고 있었지만(2:9), 예수님의 부활은 그리스도 안에 있는 구원(10절)을 다른 이들에게 전하는 그의 소명 안에 그를 굳건히 서 있게 해주었습니다. “우리가 주와 함께 죽었으면 또한 함께 살 것이요 참으면 또한 함께 왕 노릇 할 것이요”(11-12절).

LIVING WITH JESUS

Physician Christian Ntizimira sensed God’s calling to provide end-of-life care in under-resourced areas of his home country of Rwanda. Colleagues often didn’t see the value of such care because “these patients were already considered hopeless.” But Ntizimira found that for patients and their families, his “presence offered a rekindling of hope when all seemed lost.” Ntizimira is grounded in his work by the conviction that Jesus’ death and life can transform how we approach death because “the death of Christ is the source of life.”

In 2 Timothy, the apostle Paul testified to how the reality that Jesus “destroyed death and . . . brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (1:10) changed how he understood his suffering. Though Paul was a prisoner facing possible execution (2:9), Jesus’ resurrection grounded him in his calling—to point others to salvation through Christ (V. 10). For “if we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him” (VV. 11-12).

Dying with Jesus doesn’t just mean what happens at believers’ literal deaths. In his letter to the Romans, Paul explained that, as symbolized in baptism, believers are united with Christ’s Spirit in His death and resurrection life (ROMANS 6:4-8).

Because Christ lives in us, even when we face death’s terrors, we can live for and witness to Him.

단 8분으로 어떤 사람의 삶을 바꿀 수 있을까요? 의미 있는 만남이 드문 이 세상에서 작가 잰시 던은 8분의 전화통화가 지닌 힘에 대해서 이야기합니다. 잰시는 그런 짧은 통화를 통해 우리가 가족이나 친구들과 서로 연결될 수 있다고 생각합니다. 여러 연구에 따르면, 일주일에 짧은 통화 몇 번이 우울증과 외로움, 불안을 줄이는데 도움이 된다고 합니다. 뿐만 아니라 인간관계를 약간만 조정해줘도 우리와 다른 사람들의 안녕에 깊은 영향을 미칠 수 있다고 하는 다른 전문가들의 연구결과도 인용하고 있습니다.

이런 통찰력은 “근심이 사람의 마음에 있으면 그것으로 번뇌하게 되나 선한 말은 그것을 즐겁게 하느니라”고 한 잠언 12장 25절 말씀과 잘 들어맞습니다. 이 구절에서, 근심은 자신의 안녕이 위협받을 때 보이는 사람의 감정적 반응을 의미합니다. 근심은 또한 미래에 대한 두려움과 불확실성에서 비롯될 수도 있습니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 위로와 격려의 말은 사람들의 불안을 기쁨으로 바꾸어 진정한 삶의 길로 이끌어줄 수 있습니다(28절). 그런 말들은 사람들이 “친구를 신중히 선택하는” 데 도움이 되는 길잡이가 될 수도 있습니다 (26절).

CHRIST-BASED CONNECTION

Could eight minutes change someone’s life? In a world where meaningful connections can be rare, author Jancee Dunn proposes the power of an eight-minute phone call. She believes such brief calls can help us connect with family and friends. Studies show that such calls a few times a week help reduce depression, loneliness, and anxiety. And Dunn cites the research of other experts who affirm that minor relationship adjustments can profoundly affect our well-being and that of others.

This insight aligns with Proverbs 12:25, which states, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” In this verse, anxiety refers to a person’s emotional response to a threat to their well-being. Being anxious can also stem from fear and uncertainty about the future. For believers in Jesus, reassuring and encouraging words can help transform others’ anxiety into cheerfulness and lead to real life (V. 28). Those words can also provide signposts to help others “choose their friends carefully” (V. 26).

Let’s pray and ask God who might need an eight-minute call with encouraging words based in Scripture. Though brief, this simple act of connection might just be the spark He uses to lighten someone’s load, brighten their day, and offer them hope and healing.
