하나님의 인내심 있는 사랑

예쁘고 털이 복실한 노르웨이 숲고양이 미스티크의 배를 쓰다듬으며 같이 놀 때나, 저녁에 내 무릎에서 잠이 들었을 때, 나는 가끔 이 미스티크가 몇 년 전 내가 주어 온 바로 그 암코양이라는 사실이 믿겨지지 않습니다. 예전에 길고양이였던 미스티크는 못 먹어서 비쩍 말랐었고 사람을 보면 무서워했습니다. 하지만 내가 매일 먹이를 주기 시작하면서 미스티크는 점점 변화되었습니다. 어느 날 마침내 나에게 쓰다듬는 것을 허락했고 그 다음은 다들 아시는 대로입니다.

미스티크의 변화는 인내와 사랑으로 얻을 수 있는 치유를 생각나게 합니다. 이사야 42장에 기록된 하나님의 사랑 말입니다. 우리는 하나님의 영으로(1절) 충만한 종이 와서 “세상에 공의”를 세우기 위해(3-4절) 지치지 않고 “진리로” 일할 것이라는 예언을 들었습니다.

그러나 그 종 예수님(마태복음 12:18-20)은 폭력이나 권력 추구를 통해서 하나님의 공의를 세우지 않을 것입니다. 그 대신 주님은 조용하고 온화하며 (이사야 42:2), 다른 사람들에게 버림받은 사람들, 즉 “상하고” 상처받은 사람들 (3절)을 부드럽고 인내심 있게 돌보실 것입니다.

하나님께서는 그분의 자녀를 절대 포기하지 않으십니다. 우리의 상처받는 마음이 마침내 치유되기 시작할 때까지 충분히 시간을 들여 돌보아 주실 것입니다. 그분의 온유하고 인내심 있는 사랑을 통해 우리는 천천히 사랑과 신뢰를 다시 한번 배웁니다.

GOD’S PATIENT LOVE

When I give our beautiful, fluffy Norwegian Forest cat, Mystique, belly rubs and play with her, or when she falls asleep on my lap in the evening, it’s sometimes hard to believe that she’s the same cat we met years ago. Mystique used to live on the streets, underweight and fearful of everyone. But that gradually changed as I started putting out food for her each day. One day she finally let me pet her, and the rest is history.

Mystique’s transformation is a reminder of the healing that can come with patience and love. It reminds me of God’s heart as described in Isaiah 42. There, we’re told of a coming servant filled with His Spirit (V. 1), who would tirelessly and “in faithfulness” work to establish God’s “justice on earth” (VV. 3-4).

But that servant—Jesus (MATTHEW 12:18-20)—would not bring God’s justice through violence or pursuit of power. Instead, He’d be quiet and gentle (ISAIAH 42:2), tenderly and patiently caring for those discarded by others—those “bruised” and wounded (V. 3).

God never gives up on His children. He has all the time in the world to care for our wounded hearts, until they finally begin to heal. Through His gentle, patient love we gradually learn to love and trust once more.

하나님의 가족으로 접붙임

오래 전 아버지와 함께 그가 사랑하는 에콰도르에 여행했을 때, 아버지가 자란 가족 농장에 간 일이 있습니다. 그때 저는 거기서 이상한 나무들을 보았습니다. 아버지가 어릴 적 장난치고 싶을 때, 어른들이 하는 것처럼 과일나무에 홈을 쪼개고 다른 버려진 과일나무 가지를 꽂아 넣은 뒤 동여매었던, 접붙임된 나무들이라고 아버지는 설명했습니다. 아버지의 장난은 그 나무들이 전과 다른 열매를 맺기 시작할 때까지는 발각되지 않았습니다.

아버지가 접붙임 과정을 설명해 주셨을 때, 나는 우리가 하나님의 가족으로 접붙임 된다는 의미가 무엇인지 이해하게 되었습니다. 돌아가신 아버지는 지금 천국에 계신 줄 압니다. 왜냐하면 예수님을 믿음으로써 아버지는 하나님의 가족으로 접붙임 되었기 때문입니다.

우리도 나중에는 천국에 갈 것이라는 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 바울 사도는 로마에 있는 신자들에게 하나님이 이방인이나 유대인이 아닌 사람들이 하나님과 화해할 수 있는 방법을 만들었다고 설명했습니다. “돌감람나무인 네가 그들 중에 접붙임이 되어 참감람나무 뿌리의 진액을 함께 받는 자가 되었은즉”(로마서 11:17)이라고 말입니다. 우리가 그리스도를 믿을 때, 우리는 주님께로 접붙여져 하나님의 가족의 일부가 됩니다. “그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니”(요한복음15:5).

접붙인 나무들과 마찬가지로 우리도 그리스도를 믿을 때 우리는 새로운 피조물이 되고 많은 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다.

GRAFTED INTO GOD’S FAMILY

During a visit with my father to his beloved Ecuador a few years ago, we visited the family farm where he grew up. I noticed a group of strange trees. My dad explained that when he was feeling mischievous as a boy, he would take a discarded branch from one fruit tree, make slits in a different kind of fruit tree, and tie the loose branch to the trunk like he saw the grownups do. His pranks went unnoticed until those trees started bearing different fruit than expected.

As my dad described the process of engrafting, I got a picture of what it means for us to be grafted into God’s family. I know my late father is in heaven because he was grafted into God’s family through faith in Jesus.

We can have the assurance of eventually being in heaven as well. The apostle Paul explained to the believers in Rome that God made a way for gentiles, or non-Jews, to be reconciled with Himself: “You, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root” (ROMANS 11:17). When we put our faith in Christ, we’re grafted in with Him and become part of God’s family. “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit” (JOHN 15:5).

Similar to engrafted trees, when we place our trust in Christ, we become a new creation and can bear much fruit.

영어에서 동물 무리에 대한 명칭은 다양합니다. 양 ‘무리’(flock: 주로 털을 얻는 양이나 새의 무리 -역주), 소 ‘떼’(herd: 공통된 생김새나 습성을 지닌 짐승 무리 -역주), 혹은 거위 ‘떼’(gaggle: 시끌벅적한 무리 -역주)에 대해서는 많이 들어보았을 것입니다. 하지만 몇몇 다른 명칭을 들어보면 놀랄지도 모릅니다. 까마귀 무리에 대해서는 ‘살인’(murder)을 사용합니다. 악어 ‘회중’(congregation)이나 코뿔소 ‘굉음’(crash)은 어떻습니까? 떼까마귀(유라시아 까마귀) ‘집’(building)이라는 말을 들어본 적이 있습니까?

사실 ‘집’은 성경에 나오는 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 칭하는 단어 중 하나입니다. 바울 사도는 이렇게 썼습니다. “너희는... 하나님의 집이니라” (고린도전서 3:9). 성경에는 신자에 대한 다른 이름도 있습니다. “양떼”(사도행전 20:28), “그리스도의 몸”(고린도전서 12:27), “형제 자매”(데살로니가전서 2:14) 등 말입니다.

베드로전서 2장 5절에서 베드로는 교회에 “너희도 산 돌 같이 신령한 집으로 세워졌다”고 말하면서 집의 비유를 반복합니다. 그리고 6절에서 이사야 28장 16절 “보라 내가 한 돌을 시온에 두어 기초를 삼았노니”라고 인용합니다. 예수님은 그 집의 기초가 되십니다.

우리는 교회를 세우는 것이 우리의 일이라고 생각할 수 있지만. 예수님은 “내가 내 교회를 세우리라”(마태복음 16:18)고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 “너희를 어두운 데서 불러내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 자의 찬양을 선포하라” (베드로전서 2:9)는 하나님의 선택을 받았습니다. 우리가 이러한 찬양을 선포할 때, 우리는 하나님께서 선한 일을 행하심에 있어 그분의 도구로 사용됩니다.

BUILT ON CHRIST

We have all sorts of names for groups of animals. No doubt you’ve heard of a flock of sheep, a herd of cattle, or even a gaggle of geese. But some names may surprise you. A group of crows is called a murder. How about a congregation of alligators, or a crash of rhinoceroses? Have you heard of a building of rooks (Eurasian crows)?

Building, in fact, is one of the names in the Bible for believers in Jesus. “You are . . . God’s building,” wrote the apostle Paul (1 CORINTHIANS 3:9). There are other names for believers as well: “the flock” (ACTS 20:28), “the body of Christ” (1 CORINTHIANS 12:27), “brothers and sisters” (1 THESSALONIANS 2:14), and more.

The building metaphor recurs in 1 Peter 2:5, as Peter tells the church, “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house.” Then, in verse 6, Peter quotes Isaiah 28:16, “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone.” Jesus is the very foundation of His building.

We may have the sense that it’s our job to build the church, but Jesus said, “I will build my church” (MATTHEW 16:18). We’re chosen by God to “declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 PETER 2:9). As we declare those praises, we become instruments in His hands as He does His good work.

“AIN’T NO GRAVE”

Even as country music legend Johnny Cash was approaching death, he was determined to keep making music. His final album, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, was recorded in the final months of his life. The title song, Cash’s version of a hymn by Claude Ely, gives insight into his final thoughts as we hear him sing of his hope of the resurrection. His famously deep voice, though weakened by his declining health, declares a powerful testimony of faith.

Johnny’s hope wasn’t simply in the fact that Jesus was resurrected on Easter Sunday morning; he believed that one day his own physical body would also be resurrected, and he’d rise again.

It’s an important truth to affirm because even in the days of the apostle Paul, people denied a future physical resurrection. Paul strongly critiqued their argument when he wrote, “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:13-14).

Just as the grave couldn’t hold Jesus’ body, one day all those who have faith that He was resurrected “will be made alive” (V. 22). And in our resurrected bodies, we’ll enjoy all eternity with Him on a new earth. That’s reason to sing!

맛있는 죽

조슬린의 포장마차에서 가장 잘나가는 요리는 쌀죽이었습니다. 조슬린은 쌀죽이 골고루 부드럽게 풀어질 때까지 아주 정성스럽게 저어서 조리했습니다. 그래서 어느 날 한 단골 손님이 “죽 맛이 변했네요. 식감이 이전같이 좋지 않아요.”라는 말을 듣고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.

문제의 그 죽은 신참 보조 요리사가 만든 것이어서 맛이 달랐던 것입니다. “집에서 하던 대로 요리했고 조리법에 적힌 만큼 오랫동안 저어주지 않았어요. 참기름도 더 넣었구요. 이렇게 만들면 더 맛있거든요.” 보조 요리사는 조리법을 무시하고 자신의 방식대로 만들었던 것입니다.

나도 때때로 하나님의 지시에 그렇게 반응합니다. 성경에 주어진 주님의 말씀에 온전히 순종하는 대신, 내 생각대로 해석하고 내 방식대로 실행에 옮깁니다.

시리아 군대의 사령관인 나아만도 그와 비슷한 실수를 저지를 뻔했습니다. 예언자 엘리사를 통해 요단강에서 몸을 씻어 나병을 낫게 하라는 하나님의 지시를 받았을 때, 이 교만한 군인은 화를 냈습니다. 그는 자신의 생각이 하나님의 명령보다 우월하다고 믿었기 때문에 자신의 필요가 어떻게 해결되어야 하는지에 대해 자기 나름의 기대가 있었습니다(열왕기하 5:11-12). 그러나 그의 종들은 엘리사의 말을 들으라고 그를 설득했습니다(13절). 결과적으로 나아만은 낫게 되었습니다.

우리가 하나님의 말씀을 따를 때, 형언할 수 없는 평안을 경험하게 됩니다. 주님의 목적을 이루기 위해 주님과 함께 합시다.

GOOD CONGEE

Jocelyn’s bestselling dish at her food stall was her congee. She’d stir the rice porridge very carefully until it had a smooth consistency. So, she was startled when a regular customer said, “Your congee tastes different. The texture isn’t as fine.”

Jocelyn’s new assistant had prepared it this time and explained why it was different: “I didn’t stir it as long as the recipe said since that’s how I do it at home. I also added more sesame oil. In my opinion, it tastes better that way.” She had decided to ignore the recipe and do it her way instead.

This is how I sometimes respond to God’s instructions. Instead of fully obeying His commands as given in Scripture, I subject them to my opinions and proceed my way.

Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army, was on the verge of making a similar mistake. On receiving God’s instruction through the prophet Elisha to wash himself in the Jordan so his leprosy would be healed, the proud soldier got angry. He had his own expectations for how his need ought to be addressed, believing his opinion was superior to God’s command (2 KINGS 5:11-12). His servants, however, convinced him to listen to Elisha’s words (V. 13). As a result, Naaman was healed.

When we do things God’s way, we experience a peace that’s indescribable. Let’s work with Him in fulfilling His purposes.

왕국을 닮은 일터

빅토리아 시대의 공장 지대는 음침한 곳이었습니다. 사망률이 높았으며 이곳에 사는 노동자들은 가난하게 살았습니다. “이런 빈민가에 사는 노동자들이 어떻게 하면 이상을 추구하는 삶을 살 수 있을까?” 조지 캐드베리는 스스로에게 물었습니다. 그래서 자신의 초콜릿 사업을 확장하면서 근로자들에게 혜택이 돌아가는 새로운 종류의 공장을 지었습니다.

그 결과로 캐드베리 공장 근로자와 가족들을 위한 운동장, 놀이터, 학교 및 교회가 있는 300채 이상의 주택으로 이루어진 본빌 마을이 들어섰습니다. 그들은 충분한 임금을 받았으며 의료 서비스를 제공받았습니다. 이 모든 것은 캐드베리의 기독교 신앙 덕분이었습니다.

KINGDOM-SHAPED WORKPLACE

The factories of Victorian England were dark places. Fatalities were high, and workers often lived in poverty. “How can the working man cultivate ideals,” George Cadbury asked, “when his home is a slum?” And so he built a new kind of factory for his expanding chocolate business, one that benefited his workers.

The result was Bournville, a village of more than three hundred homes with sports fields, playgrounds, schools, and churches for Cadbury’s workers and their families. They were paid good wages and offered medical care, all because of Cadbury’s faith in Christ.

Jesus teaches us to pray for God’s will to be done “on earth as it is in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:10). This prayer can help us imagine, as Cadbury did, what our workplaces would be like under God’s rule, where our “daily bread” is earned and our “debtors” forgiven (VV. 11-12). As employees, it means working with “all your heart . . . for the Lord” (COLOSSIANS 3:23). As employers, it means giving staff what’s “right and fair” (4:1). Whatever our role, whether paid or voluntary, it means tending to the well-being of those we serve with.

Like George Cadbury, let’s imagine how things could be different if God were in charge of our neighborhoods and workplaces. Because when He is, people flourish.

기억을 되찾아 내기 연습

여러분은 이야기를 하다가 이름이나 날짜와 같은 세세한 내용이 기억 나지 않아 이야기를 중단한 적이 있지 않나요? 우리는 시간이 지나면 기억이 희미해 진다고 믿기 때문에 나이 탓으로 돌리고는 합니다. 그러나 최근 연구에 따르면 더 이상 그렇게 생각할 수 없게 되었습니다. 실은 우리의 기억이 문제가 아니라 그 기억을 ‘찾아내는’ 능력이 문제라고 지적합니다. 어떤 형태로든 정기적인 되뇌기 연습이 없으면 기억에 접근하기가 점점 더 어려워집니다.

기억을 찾아내는 능력을 향상시키는 방법 중 하나는 계획을 세워 정기적으로 어떤 기억을 회상하는 일을 해보거나 느껴보는 것입니다. 우리의 창조주 하나님께서는 이 사실을 아시고 이스라엘 자손들에게 일주일에 하루를
예배와 휴식을 위해 따로 떼어놓으라고 지시하셨습니다. 그러한 일시적인 멈춤에서 오는 육체적인 휴식에 더해, 우리는 “여호와가 엿새 동안에 하늘과 땅과 바다와 그 가운데 모든 것을 창조하였느니라”(출애굽기 20:11)는 것을 기억하는 정신적 훈련의 기회를 갖게 됩니다. 이것은 우리가 아니라 하나님이 계시다는 것을 기억하는 데 도움이 됩니다.

바쁜 삶 속에서 우리는 때때로 하나님께서 우리와 다른 사람들을 위해 행하신 일에 대한 기억의 실마리를 놓칠 때가 있습니다. 우리가 삶에 짓눌리고 외로움을 느낄 때 우리의 삶을 면밀히 지켜주시는 분이 누구인지 그분의 임재를 약속하신 분이 누구인지 잊어버립니다. 일상으로부터의 휴식은 우리가 멈추어 하나님을 기억하게 하며 “그의 모든 은택을 잊지 말지어다”(시편 103:2)라는 주님의 명령을 새기기 위해 의도적으로 결정한 “기억 되찾기 연습”의 기회가 됩니다.

RETRIEVAL PRACTICE

Have you ever been in the middle of telling a story and thenstopped, stuck on a detail like a name or date you couldn’t recall? We often chalk it up to age, believing that memory fades with time. But recent studies no longer support that view. In fact, they indicate our memory isn’t the problem; it’s our ability to retrieve those memories. Without a regular rehearsal of some kind, memories become harder to access.

One of the ways to improve that retrieval ability is by regularly scheduled actions or experiences of recalling a certain memory. Our Creator God knew this, so He instructed the children of Israel to set aside one day a week for worship and rest. In addition to the physical rest that comes from such a respite, we gain an opportunity for mental training, to recall that “in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them” (EXODUS 20:11). It helps us to remember there is a God, and it’s not us.

In the rush of our lives, we sometimes lose our grip on the memories of what God has done for us and for others. We forget who keeps close watch over our lives and who promises His presence when we feel overwhelmed and alone. A break from our routine provides an opportunity for that needed “retrieval practice”— an intentional decision to stop and remember our God and “forget not all his benefits” (PSALM 103:2).

희망의 무지개 색깔들

미국을 향한 공격의 22주년이 되는 2023년 9월 11일, 멋진 쌍무지개가 뉴욕시 상공에 나타났습니다. 이전 트윈 타워가 서 있던 이 도시는 그 공격으로 가장 큰 손실을 입었습니다. 20여년이 지난 후, 쌍무지개는 이를 목격한 사람들에게 희망과 치유를 느끼게 해 주었습니다. 그 순간을 담은 영상은 마치 무지개가 세계무역센터 부지에서 발산되는 것 같은 모습을 담고 있습니다.

무지개는 노아 시대 이후로 하나님의 신실하심을 확신시켜 주었습니다. 상상할 수 없는 멸망을 초래한 죄에 대한 하나님의 심판 후에, 하나님은 “하나님과 모든 육체를 가진 땅의 모든 생물 사이의 영원한 언약”(창세기 9:16)을 시각적으로 상기시키기 위해 화려한 상징물을 세우신 것입니다. 40일 동안 비가 내리고 수개월의 홍수가 지난 후(7:17-24), “언약의 표”인 무지개가 노아와 그의 가족에게 얼마나 반가웠을지 우리는 짐작만 할 뿐입니다(9:12-13). 그것은 “땅을 멸할 홍수가 다시 있지 아니하리라”(11절)는 하나님의 신실하심을 상기시켜 주는 증표였습니다.

COLORS OF HOPE

On September 11, 2023—the twenty-second anniversary of the attacks against the United States—a stunning double rainbow graced the skies above New York City. Home to the former Twin Towers, this city suffered the greatest losses in the attacks. More than two decades later, the double rainbow brought a sense of hope and healing to those who were there to see it. A video clip of the moment seemed to capture the rainbows emanating from the site of the World Trade Center itself.

Rainbows in the sky have brought an assurance of God’s faithfulness since the days of Noah. In the wake of God’s judgment of sin which resulted in unimaginable destruction, He set the colorful beacon as a visual reminder of “the everlasting covenant between [Himself] and all living creatures” (GENESIS 9:16). After forty dark days of rain and months of flooding (7:17-24), one can only imagine how welcome the rainbow—“the sign of the covenant”— must have been to Noah and his family (9:12-13). It was a reminder of God’s faithfulness that “never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth” (V. 11).

When we face dark days and tragic losses—whether due to natural disaster, physical or emotional pain, or the plight of disease— let’s look to God for hope in the midst of it. Even if we don’t catch a glimpse of His rainbow in those moments, we can be assured of His faithfulness to His promises.

영적인 왕권

메릴랜드 주 락빌에 사는 제이 스피츠는 유전자 검사를 받았는데, 검사결과로 어떤 일이 벌어질지 전혀 준비되어 있지 않았습니다. 매우 놀랍게도 그가 서아프리카의 베냉 국 왕자라는 사실이 밝혀진 것이지요! 그는 곧장 비행기를 타고 그 나라를 방문했습니다. 그가 도착하자 왕족들이 나와서 맞이했고 춤, 노래, 현수막, 그리고 행진으로 왕자의 귀향을 요란하게 축하했습니다.

예수님은 하나님의 복음을 전하기 위해 이 땅에 오셨습니다. 주님은 자신의 백성인 이스라엘 민족에게 복음을 전하시고 어둠에서 벗어날 길을 보여주셨습니다. 많은 사람들이 그 메시지를 냉담하게 받고 그의 “참 빛” 되심을 거절했으며(요한복음 1:9) 그분을 메시야로 받아들이지 않았습니다 (11절). 그러나 모든 사람들이 한결같이 믿지 않고 무관심했던 것은 아니었습니다. 어떤 사람들은 그리스도의 초대를 겸손한 자세로 기쁘게 받아들이면서 죄를 해결하기 위해 하나님이 궁극적으로 주님을 희생하셨다는 사실을 받아들이고 주님의 이름을 믿었습니다. 이 충실한 남은 자들에게는 놀라운 일이 기다리고 있었습니다. 주님은 [그들에게] 영적으로 거듭남을 통해 왕족 즉, “하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를” 주셨습니다(12절).

SPIRITUAL ROYALTY

When Jay Speights of Rockville, Maryland, took a DNA test, nothing could have prepared him for the results he received. They contained a big surprise—he was a prince of the West African nation of Benin! Soon he boarded a plane and visited the country. When he arrived, the royal family greeted and showered him with a festive homecoming—dancing, singing, banners, and a parade.

Jesus came to earth as God’s good news announcement. He went to His own people, the nation of Israel, to give them the good news and to show them the way out of darkness. Many received the message with apathy, rejecting the “true light” (JOHN 1:9) and refusing to accept Him as Messiah (V. 11). But unbelief and apathy weren’t universal among the people. Some people humbly and gladly received Christ’s invitation, accepted Him as God’s eventual sacrifice for sin, and believed in His name. A surprise awaited this faithful remnant. He “gave [them] the right to become children of God” (V. 12)—to be royal children of His through spiritual rebirth.

When we turn from sin and darkness, receive Jesus, and believe in His name, we discover we’re children of God, adopted as royalty into His family. May we enjoy the blessings as we live up to the responsibilities of being the King’s kids.

예수님 안에 거하기

화재로 인해 발소라 침례교회가 전소됐습니다. 화재가 진압된 후, 응급대원과 지역주민들은 공중에 연기가 피어오르고 재가 날리는 가운데 우뚝 서 있는 까맣게 탄 십자가를 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 한 소방관은 “화재가 건물은 무너뜨렸지만 십자가는 그렇게 하지 못했습니다. [이것을 보면] 교회당은 그저 건물일 뿐이고 교회는 회중입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

교회는 건물이 아닙니다. 죽으시고 묻히시고 부활하신 그리스도의 십자가로 연합된 공동체입니다. 예수님께서 이 세상에서 사실 때, 베드로에게 주님의 교회를 전 세계에 세우겠다고 말씀하셨고 그 어떤 것도 그것을 멸하지 못할 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 16:18). 예수님은 전 세계의 믿는 모든 자들을 한 그룹으로 모으시는데 그것은 시간이 흘러도 계속될 것입니다. 이 공동체는 극심한 어려움에 직면하겠지만 최후까지 견뎌낼 것입니다. 하나님께서는 그들 안에 거하실 것이며 그들을 붙드실 것입니다(에베소서 2:22).

우리가 지역 교회를 세우려고 애쓰다가 정체되고 흔들리게 될 때, 건물이 무너질 때, 혹은 세계 곳곳에서 어려움을 겪고 있는 신자들을 염려할 때, 우리는 예수님께서 살아 계셔서 하나님의 백성들이 인내할 수 있도록 도우시는 것을 기억해야 합니다. 우리는 오늘날 ‘주님’이 세우시는 교회의 일부입니다. 주님은 우리와 함께 계시고 우리를 위해 계십니다. 주님의 십자가는 영원합니다.

REMAINING IN JESUS

A fire burned Balsora Baptist Church to the ground. As emergency workers and community members gathered after the blaze subsided, they were surprised to see a charred cross standing upright amidst the smoke and ashes in the air. A firefighter commented that the fire “took the structure, but not the cross. [This is a reminder] that the building was just that, a building. The church is the congregation.”

The church is not a building, but a community united by the cross of Christ—the One who died, was buried, and rose again. When Jesus lived on earth, He told Peter He’d build His worldwide church, and nothing would destroy it (MATTHEW 16:18). Jesus would gather believers from all over the globe into a group that would continue throughout time. This community would face intense difficulty, but they’d ultimately endure. God would dwell within them and sustain them (EPHESIANS 2:22).

When we struggle to establish local churches only to have them stagnate and sputter, when buildings are destroyed, or when we’re concerned about believers struggling in other parts of the world, we can remember that Jesus is alive, actively enabling God’s people to persevere. We’re part of the church He’s building today. He’s with us and for us. His cross remains.
