정의의 하나님

라이언은 십대에 엄마를 암으로 잃었습니다. 지낼 집이 없게 된 그는 곧 학교도 그만두었습니다. 희망을 잃고 굶기도 자주 했습니다. 여러 해가 지나서 라이언은 다른 이들, 특히 어린이들에게 자기들이 먹을 것을 심고 수확해서 직접 음식을 만들 수 있도록 돕는 비영리 단체를 설립했습니다. 이 단체는 아무도 굶주리는 사람이 없어야 하며, 무언가를 가진 사람들은 없는 사람들을 돌봐야 한다는 정신 위에 세워졌습니다. 다른 사람들을 향한 라이언의 관심은 정의와 자비의 하나님 마음을 잘 보여줍니다.

하나님은 우리가 마주하는 고통과 고난에 깊은 관심을 갖고 계십니다. 이스라엘의 심각한 불의를 보신 하나님은 아모스 선지자를 보내어 그들의 위선을 지적하셨습니다. 전에 이집트의 압제에서 구원받은 하나님의 백성들이 이제는 신발 한 켤레에 이웃들을 노예로 팔았습니다(아모스 2:6). 그들은 제물을 드리고 거룩한 날들을 지키며(4:4-5) 하나님을 경배하는 척하면서, 무고한 사람들을 팔아 넘기고, 억압받는 이들에게 정의를 베풀지 않으며, 가난한 자들의 “머리를” 발로 밟았습니다(6-7절).

아모스는 백성들에게 호소했습니다. “너희는 살려면 선을 구하고 악을 구하지 말지어다. 만군의 하나님 여호와께서 너희의 말과 같이 너희와 함께 하시리라”(아모스 5:14). 우리도 라이언처럼 각자 살면서 고통과 불의를 경험해 본 것을 가지고 다른 사람의 형편에 공감하며 도움을 줄 수 있습니다. “선을 구하며” 모든 종류의 정의를 세우시는 하나님의 일에 동참해야 할 때가 무르익었습니다.

GOD OF JUSTICE

As a teenager, Ryan lost his mom to cancer. He found himself homeless and soon dropped out of school. He felt hopeless and often went hungry. Years later, Ryan founded a nonprofit that empowers others, especially young children, to plant, harvest, and prepare their own garden-grown food. The organization is built on the belief that nobody should go without food and that those who have something should care for those who don’t. Ryan’s concern for others resonates with the heart of God for justice and mercy.

God cares deeply about the pain and suffering we face. When He observed terrible injustice in Israel, He sent the prophet Amos to call out their hypocrisy. The people God once rescued from oppression in Egypt were now selling their neighbors into slavery over a pair of sandals (AMOS 2:6). They betrayed innocent people, denied justice to the oppressed, and trampled “on the heads” of the poor (VV. 6-7), all while pretending to worship God with offerings and holy days (4:4-5).

“Seek good, not evil, that you may live,” Amos pleaded with the people. “Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is” (5:14). Like Ryan, each of us has experienced enough pain and injustice in life to be able to relate to others and to be of help. The time is ripe to “seek good” and join Him in planting every kind of justice.

기다림의 가치

‘비행기 환승 이야기입니다.’ 필 스트링어는 천둥번개로 지연된 비행기를 타기 위해 ‘18시간’이나 기다렸습니다. 마침내 인내와 끈기를 보인 보람이 있었습니다. 그는 목적지로 비행하여 중요한 업무 회의에 시간 맞추어 도착했을 뿐 아니라 그 비행기를 탄 유일한 승객이었습니다! 다른 승객들은 모두 포기하거나 다른 항공편으로 바꿨기 때문입니다. 승무원들은 그가 원하는 음식은 무엇이든 가져다주었습니다. 스트링어는 이어서 말합니다. “물론 저는 앞 좌석에 앉았습니다. 당연하지요. 비행기 전체를 나 혼자 사용했으니까요.” 그에게는 기다린 보람이 분명히 있었습니다.

아브라함도 분명 기다리다 지칠 수 있는 일을 잘 견뎌냈습니다. 오래 전 아브람으로 불렸던 시절에 하나님은 그가 “큰 민족을 이루고... 땅의 모든 족속이 너로 말미암아 복을 얻을 것이라”(창세기 12:2-3)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 75세의 그에게 단 한가지 문제가 있었습니다(4절). 상속자도 없는데 어떻게 큰 민족을 이룰 수 있을까요? 때로 그의 기다림은 부족한 부분이 있기도 했지만 (그와 아내 사래가 잘못 생각하여 하나님의 약속이 이루어지게 “나름대로 도우려” 했던 일. 15:2-3; 16:1-2 참조), “그가 백 세가 되었을 때... 이삭이 그에게 태어났습니다”(21:5). 히브리서 저자는 후에 그의 믿음을 칭송했습니다(11:8-12).

기다리는 것은 힘들 수 있습니다. 그리고 아브라함처럼 우리도 온전하게 기다리지 못할 수 있습니다. 그러나 기도하며 하나님의 뜻 안에 거할 때 하나님께서 우리의 인내를 도와주실 것입니다. 하나님 안에서 기다리는 것은 언제나 가치가 있습니다.

WORTH THE WAIT

Talk about a layover. Phil Stringer waited eighteen hours to board a flight that was delayed due to thunderstorms. His patience and perseverance paid off, however. Not only did he get to fly to his destination and make it on time for important business meetings, but he was also the only traveler on the flight! All the other passengers gave up or made other arrangements. Flight attendants gave him whatever food items he desired, and Stringer adds, “I did sit in the front row, of course. Why not when you have the whole plane to yourself?” The outcome was definitely worth the wait.

Abraham also endured what must have felt like a lengthy delay. Way back when he was known as Abram, God told him that He would make him “into a great nation” and that “all peoples on earth [would] be blessed through” him (GENESIS 12:2-3). Only one problem for the seventy-five-year-old man (V. 4): how could he become a great nation without an heir? And though his waiting was left wanting at times (he and wife Sarai tried to “help” God fulfill His promise with some misguided ideas—see 15:2-3; 16:1-2), when he “was a hundred years old . . . Isaac was born to him” (21:5). His faith was later celebrated by the writer of Hebrews (11:8-12).

Waiting can be hard. And, like Abraham, we might not do it perfectly. But as we pray and rest in God’s plans, may He help us persevere. In Him, it’s always worth the wait.

예수님을 더 닮아가기

하나님은 큰회색올빼미를 위장의 고수로 만드셨습니다. 은회색의 깃털은 올빼미가 나무에 앉아 있을 때 나무껍질의 색깔과 전체적으로 어울리는 색상이 됩니다. 올빼미는 자신을 감추고 싶을 때 주변 환경과 어울리게 깃털로 위장해서 보이지 않게 숨습니다.

하나님의 백성들도 때로는 큰회색올빼미와 너무 닮아 있습니다. 우리는 의도적이든 아니든 세상 속에 쉽게 섞여 그리스도인이 아닌 것처럼 지낼 수 있습니다. 하나님이 “세상 중에서” 택하여 예수님께 주신, 하나님 말씀에 “순종하는” 제자들을 위해 예수님은 기도하셨습니다(요한복음 17:6). 성자 하나님이 성부 하나님께 그가 제자들을 떠난 후에도 제자들을 거룩함과 지속적인 기쁨 가운데 살 수 있도록 그들을 보호하고 능력을 달라고 기도했습니다(7-13절). “내가 비옵는 것은 그들을 세상에서 데려가시기를 위함이 아니요 다만 악에 빠지지 않게 보전하시기를 위함이니이다”(15절). 예수님은 제자들이 거룩하게 되고 세상과 구분되어야 그가 보내신 목적을 이루며 살 수 있다는 것을 알고 계셨습니다(16-19절).

성령님은 우리가 세상과 섞여 사는 위장의 고수처럼 되려는 생각을 버릴 수 있게 하십니다. 우리가 성령님을 매일 따르면 예수님을 더 닮아갈 수 있습니다. 우리가 연합하여 사랑하며 살 때 성령님은 그분의 모든 영광 가운데 다른 사람들을 그리스도께로 이끄실 것입니다.

LOOK MORE LIKE JESUS

God designed the great gray owl as a master of camouflage. Its silver-gray feathers have a collective pattern of coloring which allows it to blend into the bark when perched in trees. When the owls want to remain unseen, they hide in plain sight, blending into their environment with the help of their feathery camouflage.

God’s people are often too much like the great gray owl. We can easily blend into the world and remain unrecognized as believers in Christ, intentionally or unintentionally. Jesus prayed for His disciples—those the Father gave Him “out of the world” who “obeyed” His word (JOHN 17:6). God the Son asked God the Father to protect and empower them to live in holiness and persevering joy after He left them (VV. 7-13). He said, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one” (V. 15). Jesus knew His disciples needed to be made holy and set apart so they could live out the purpose He’d sent them to fulfill (VV. 16-19).

The Holy Spirit can help us turn from the temptation to become masters of camouflage that blend into the world. When we submit to Him daily, we can look more like Jesus. As we live in unity and love, He’ll draw others to Christ in all His glory.

광야에서

젊은 신앙인 시절, 나는 어떤 “최고의” 체험을 통해서만 예수님을 만나는 줄 알았습니다. 그러나 그런 고조된 상태는 잠시 지나갈 뿐이고 성장으로 이어지지도 않았습니다. 작가인 리나 아부잠라는 우리가 하나님을 만나고 자라는 곳은 광야라고 말합니다. 리나는 ‘광야를 지나며’라는 자신의 성경공부 교재에서 “하나님의 뜻은 우리 삶의 광야를 가지고 우리를 더 강하게 만드시는 것”이며, “하나님의 선하심은 고통이 없는 것으로 증명되는 것이 아니라, 우리의 고통 가운데서 받아들이게 되는 것”이라고 했습니다.

하나님은 우리가 슬픔과 상실, 고통의 힘든 곳에 있을 때 믿음 안에서 자라게 하시고 하나님과 더 가까워지게 하십니다. 리나가 배운 것처럼, “광야는 하나님의 계획에 착오가 생긴 것이 아니라 [우리의] 성장 과정에 꼭 필요한 부분입니다.”

하나님은 구약 시대에 많은 족장들을 광야로 인도하셨습니다. 아브라함과 이삭, 야곱은 모두 광야를 경험했습니다. 하나님이 모세의 마음을 예비하시고 그를 통해 하나님의 백성을 노예생활에서 이끌어내기 위해 부르신 곳도 바로 광야였습니다(출애굽기 3:1-2, 9-10). 그리고 하나님은 40년 동안 도우시고 인도하시면서 “광야를 지나는 길에서 [이스라엘 백성들을] 보살펴 주셨습니다” (신명기 2:7, 새번역).

모세와 이스라엘 백성들이 광야를 지나는 모든 과정에 함께 하셨던 하나님은 우리의 광야 길에도 함께 하십니다. 광야에서 우리는 하나님께 의지하는 법을 배웁니다. 하나님은 거기서 우리를 만나십니다. 그리고 우리는 그곳에서 성장합니다.

DESERT PLACES

When I was a young believer, I thought “mountaintop” experiences were where I would meet Jesus. But those highs rarely lasted or led to growth. Author Lina AbuJamra says it’s in the desert places where we meet God and grow. In her Bible study Through the Desert, she writes, “God’s aim is to use the desert places in our lives to make us stronger.” She continues, “God’s goodness is meant to be received in the midst of your pain, not proven by the absence of pain.”

It’s in the hard places of sorrow, loss, and pain that God helps us to grow in our faith and become closer to Him. As Lina learned, “The desert is not an oversight in God’s plan but an integral part of [our] growth process.”

God led many Old Testament patriarchs to the desert. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all had wilderness experiences. It was in the desert that God prepared Moses’ heart and called him to lead His people out of slavery (EXODUS 3:1-2, 9-10). And it was in the desert that God “watched over [the Israelites’] journey” for forty years with His help and guidance (DEUTERONOMY 2:7).

God was with Moses and the Israelites each step of their way through the desert, and He’s with you and me in ours. In the desert, we learn to rely on God. There He meets us—and there we grow.

우주 경쟁

1955년 7월 29일 미국이 우주에 위성을 쏘아 올린다는 계획을 발표하자 얼마 안 있어 소련도 같은 계획을 발표했습니다. 우주 경쟁이 시작된 것입니다. 소련은 첫 번째 위성 스푸트니크를 발사하고, 또 처음으로 인간을 우주로 보내어 유리 가가린이 지구 궤도를 한 바퀴 돌았습니다. 경쟁은 계속 이어지다가 1969년 7월 20일 닐 암스트롱이 달 표면에서 “인류를 위한 거대한 도약”을 하게 되면서 경쟁은 사실상 끝이 났습니다. 이후 협력의 시대가 열리면서 국제 우주 정거장이 세워지게 되었습니다.

때로 경쟁이 없었으면 해보지도 않았을 일들이 경쟁을 통해 이루어지는 것을 보면 경쟁에는 건강한 면이 있습니다. 그러나 경쟁은 파괴적이기도 합니다. 고린도교회에도 그런 문제가 있었습니다. 교인들이 그룹으로 나뉘어 교회의 서로 다른 지도자들을 그들의 희망의 등불로 삼은 것입니다. 바울은 이 문제를 다루기 위해 “심는 이나 물 주는 이는 아무 것도 아니로되 오직 자라게 하시는 이는 하나님뿐이니라”(고린도전서 3:7)라고 하면서, “우리는 하나님의 동역자들”(9절)이라고 결론적으로 말합니다.

우리는 경쟁자가 아니라 동역자입니다. 그리고 우리들 사이에서만 아니라 하나님과도 동역자입니다! 하나님이 주시는 능력과 인도하심으로 우리는 자신의 영광이 아닌 하나님의 영광을 위해 예수님의 복음을 전하는 일을 함께 할 수 있습니다.

SPACE RACE

On July 29, 1955, the United States of America announced its intent to place satellites in space. Soon after, the Soviet Union declared its plans to do the same. The space race had begun. The Soviets would launch the first satellite (Sputnik) and place the first human in space when Yuri Gagarin orbited our planet one time. The race continued until, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong’s “giant leap for mankind” on the surface of the moon would unofficially end the competition. A season of cooperation soon dawned, leading to the creation of the International Space Station.

Sometimes competition can be healthy, driving us to achieve things that otherwise we might not have attempted. At other times, however, competition is destructive. This was a problem in the church at Corinth as different groups latched on to various church leaders as their beacons of hope. Paul sought to address that when he wrote, “Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow” (1 CORINTHIANS 3:7), concluding “for we are co-workers” (V. 9).

Co-workers—not competitors. And not just with one another but with God Himself! Through His empowering and His guidance, we can serve together as fellow workers to advance the message of Jesus, for His honor rather than our own.

새로워진 삶

어느 학교에서 우수학생들이 공부를 잘해 우등상을 받자 박수가 터졌습니다. 그러나 시상식이 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 이번에는 학교 에서 “최고”는 아니어도 가장 많이 좋아진 학생들을 축하하는 상이 수여되었습니다. 이 아이들은 낮았던 성적을 올리거나 잘못된 행동을 바로 잡거나 결석을 하지 않으려고 애쓴 학생들이었습니다. 부모들은 아이들이 잘 되어가는 모습에 기쁜 얼굴로 박수를 보냈습니다. 이전의 부족했던 부분 보다는 새로워진 모습에 주목한 것입니다.

이런 감동의 장면은 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께서 우리를 옛적 모습이 아니라 지금 그리스도 안에서 아버지의 자녀로 보시는 한 폭의 그림과도 같습니다. 요한은 “영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨다”(요한복음 1:12)고 기록했습니다.

정말 사랑이 넘치는 시각이 아닐 수 없습니다! 바울은 처음 믿는 사람들에게 “여러분도 전에는 허물과 죄로 죽었던 사람들”(에베소서 2:1, 새번역)이었다고 했습니다. 그러나 실제로 “우리는 하나님의 작품입니다. 선한 일을 하게 하시려고 하나님께서 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리를 만드셨습니다”(10절, 새번역).

마찬가지로 베드로는 우리를 “택하신 족속이요 왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요 그의 소유가 된 백성이니 이는 너희를 어두운 데서 불러 내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을 선포하게 하려 하심이라”
고 하면서 이제 우리는 “하나님의 백성”이라고 했습니다(베드로전서 2:9-10). 하나님의 시각으로 볼 때 우리의 과거는 우리를 어떻게 하지 못합니다. 우리도 하나님의 시각으로 우리 자신을 보면서 새로운 삶을 살아가야 하겠습니다.

WALKING ANEW

Applause rang out as a school’s top students received certificates of excellence for academic achievement. But the program wasn’t over. The next award celebrated students who weren’t the school’s “best,” but instead were most improved. They’d worked hard to raise a failing grade, correct disruptive behavior, or commit to better attendance. Their parents beamed and applauded, acknowledging their children’s turn to a higher path— seeing not their former shortcomings but their walk in a new way.

The heart-lifting scene offers a small picture of how our heavenly Father sees us—not in our old life but now, in Christ, as His children. “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,” wrote
John (JOHN 1:12).

What a loving perspective! So Paul reminded new believers that once “you were dead in your transgressions and sins” (EPHESIANS 2:1). But in fact, “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (V. 10).

In this way, Peter wrote, we are “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light,” and we are now “the people of God” (1 PETER 2:9-10). Through God’s eyes, our old path has no claim on us. Let’s see our-selves as God does—and walk anew.

회개하는 마음

나의 한 친구가 결혼 서약을 지키지 못했습니다. 나는 친구가 자기 가정을 망가뜨리는 것을 아픈 마음으로 지켜보았습니다. 아내와 화해를 시도하던 친구는 나에게 상담을 요청했습니다. 나는 그에게 이 일은 말로만 끝날 것이 아니고, 아내를 사랑하는 일과 죄의 습관을 모두 끊는 일을 스스로 나서서 해야 한다고 말해주었습니다.

예레미야 선지자는 하나님과의 언약을 어기고 다른 신들을 섬기는 이들에게 이와 비슷한 충고를 했습니다. 하나님께로 돌아서는 것은 올바른 시작이긴 했지만 그것으로 충분하지 않았습니다(예레미야 4:1). 그들 역시 그들의 말에 행동이 뒤따라야 했습니다. 그것은 “가증스러운 우상”(1절) 을 제거하는 일이었습니다. 예레미야는 그들에게 “진실과 정의와 공의로” 맹세하면 하나님이 나라들을 축복하실 것이라고 하였습니다(2절). 그러나 문제는 그들이 빈 약속을 한 것입니다. 약속에 마음이 담겨있지 않았습니다.

하나님은 말뿐 아니라 우리의 마음을 원하십니다. 예수님의 말씀처럼 “마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말하기”(마태복음 12:34) 때문입니다. 그래서 예레미야는 그들에게 마음의 묵은 땅을 갈아엎고 가시덤불에다 파종하지 말라고 계속 권고한 것입니다(예레미야 4:3).

안타깝게도 내 친구는 많은 사람들처럼 올바른 성경적인 조언에 귀를 기울이지 않고 결국 결혼생활에 파국을 맞았습니다. 우리는 죄를 지으면 자백하고 그 죄에서 돌아서야 합니다. 하나님은 공허한 약속을 원치 않으시며 진정 하나님 방식으로 사는 삶을 원하십니다.

A REPENTANT HEART

A friend had violated the vows of his marriage. It was painful to watch him destroy his family. As he sought reconciliation with his wife, he asked my counsel. I told him he needed to offer more than words; he needed to be proactive in loving his wife and removing any patterns of sin.

The prophet Jeremiah offered similar advice to those who’d broken their covenant with God and followed other gods. It wasn’t enough to return to Him (JEREMIAH 4:1), though that was the right start. They also needed to align their actions with what they were saying. That meant getting rid of their “detestable idols” (V. 1). Jeremiah said that if they made commitments “in a truthful, just and righteous way,” then God would bless the nations (V. 2). The problem was the people were making empty promises. Their heart wasn’t in it.

God doesn’t want mere words; He wants our hearts. As Jesus said, “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (MATTHEW 12:34). That’s why Jeremiah goes on to encourage those who would listen to break up the unplowed ground of their heart and not sow among the thorns (JEREMIAH 4:3).

Sadly, like so many people, my friend didn’t heed sound biblical counsel and consequently lost his marriage. When we sin, we must confess and turn from it. God doesn’t want empty promises; He desires a life that’s truly aligned with Him.

하나님의 접시에 올려놓으라

한 어머니가 오랫동안 기도를 하며 성인이 된 딸이 적절한 의료 기관을 만나 상담과 딱 맞는 약을 처방받을 수 있게 도와주고 있었습니다. 딸의 극심한 감정 기복은 날마다 어머니의 마음을 짓눌렀습니다. 종종 슬픔을 못 이겨 진이 빠진 어머니는 자기자신도 돌봐야 한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 한 친구가 그녀에게 작은 종이에 고민과 감당할 수 없는 일들을 적어서 침대 옆 ‘하나님의 접시’에 올려놓으라고 제안했습니다. 이 간단한 방법으로 스트레스가 모두 사라지는 것은 아니었지만, 어머니는 그 접시를 보면서 이제는 걱정들이 자기 것이 아니라 하나님의 것이라고 생각하게 되었습니다.

어떤 면에서 다윗의 많은 시편도 그의 고난을 다 글로 적어 하나님의 접시에 올려놓는 그 나름의 방식이기도 했습니다(시편 55:1, 16-17). 다윗의 아들 압살롬의 반란 시도를 기록한 것을 보면 다윗의 “가까운 친구” 아히도벨이 실제로 그를 배신하고 죽이려는 음모에 가담하였습니다(사무엘하 15-16). 그래서 “저녁과 아침과 정오에 [다윗이] 근심하여 탄식하니” 하나님이 그의 기도를 들어주셨습니다(시편 55:1-2, 16-17). 그는 “[그의] 짐을 여호와께 맡기며” 하나님의 돌보심을 경험했습니다(22절).

PLACE IT ON GOD’S PLATE

For years, a mother prayed as she helped her adult daughter navigate the healthcare system and find counseling and the best medications. Her extreme highs and deep lows weighed on her mama’s heart day after day. Often exhausted from sadness, she realized she had to take care of herself too. A friend suggested writing out her worries and things she couldn’t control on small pieces of paper and placing them on “God’s plate” at her bedside. This simple practice didn’t eliminate all stress, but seeing that plate reminds her those concerns are on God’s plate, not hers.

In a way, many of David’s psalms were his way of listing his troubles and laying them on God’s plate (PSALM 55:1, 16-17). If the coup attempt by his son Absalom is what’s being described, David’s “close friend” Ahithophel had indeed betrayed him and was involved in the plot to kill him (2 SAMUEL 15-16). So “evening, morning and noon [David cried] out in distress,” and God heard his prayer (PSALM 55:1-2, 16-17). He chose to “cast [his] cares on the Lord” and experienced His care (V. 22).

We can authentically acknowledge that worries and fears affect us all. We may even have thoughts like David’s: “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest” (V. 6). God is near and is the only one who has the power to change situations. Place it all on His plate.

제이 아이 패커로 잘 알려진 제임스 이넬 패커는 2020년에 94세 생일을 닷새 앞두고 돌아가셨습니다. 학자이며 작가인 그의 가장 유명한 책 ‘하나님을 아는 지식’은 출판되어 150만 부가 넘게 팔렸습니다. 패커는 성경의 권위를 세우고 제자를 양성하는 일에 앞장섰으며, 그리스도를 믿는 많은 사람들에게 진정으로 예수님을 위한 삶을 살라고 하였습니다. 노년에 이르러 교회에 남길 마지막 이야기를 묻는 질문에 패커는 “모든 것으로 그리스도를 영화롭게”, 이 네 마디로 줄여서 말했습니다.

A LIFE IN FOUR WORDS

James Innell Packer, better known as J. I. Packer, died in 2020 just five days shy of his ninety-fourth birthday. A scholar and writer, his best-known book, Knowing God, has sold more than 1.5 million copies since its publication. Packer championed biblical authority and disciple-making and urged believers in Christ everywhere to take living for Jesus seriously. He was asked late in life for his final words to the church. Packer had one line, just four words: “Glorify Christ every way.”

Those words reflect the life of the apostle Paul who, after his dramatic conversion, faithfully set about to do the work before him and trusted God with the results. Paul’s words found in the book of Romans are some of the most theologically packed in the entire New Testament, and Packer sums up in close company with what the apostle wrote: “Glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (15:6).

Paul’s life is an example for us. We can glorify (honor) God in many ways, but one is by living the life set before us and leaving the results in God’s unchanging hands. Whether writing books or taking missionary journeys or teaching elementary school or caring for an aging parent—the same goal holds: Glorify Christ every way! As we pray and read Scripture, God helps us live with devoted obedience and keep our daily lives on track to honor Jesus in everything we say and do.

다른 사람에게 끼치는 우리의 영향력

내가 다녔던 신학교의 교수 리 박사는 학교 직원인 벤지가 점심 모임에 늦는 것을 알고 그를 위해 조용히 음식 한 접시를 따로 마련해 두었습니다. 내가 반 친구들과 이야기하는 동안에도 리 박사는 조용히 벤지를 위해 마지막 남은 떡 한 조각을 접시에 올려놓고 그 위에 맛있는 코코넛 가루를 얹었습니다. 저명한 신학자의 이런 따뜻한 모습은 그의 여러 사례 중 하나일 뿐이며, 나는 그것이 리 박사의 하나님에 대한 신실함에서 흘러나오는 것이라고 생각합니다. 20년이 지난 지금까지도 그분의 인상이 내게 깊이 남아 있습니다.

요한 사도에게도 많은 믿는 자들에게 깊은 인상을 남긴 귀한 친구가 하나 있었습니다. 사람들은 가이오를 하나님과 성경에 충실하고 늘 “진리” 안에서 행하는(요한3서 1:3) 사람이라고 했습니다. 그는 순회 복음전도자들이라면 모르는 사람이라도 잘 돌보았습니다(5절). 그래서 요한은 가이오에게 “그들이 교회 앞에서 너의 사랑을 증언하였다”(6절)고 말했습니다. 하나님과 다른 신자들에게 신실했던 가이오는 복음 전파에 큰 도움을 주었습니다.

교수님이 나에게 준 영향과 가이오가 당대에 미친 영향을 보면 우리도 다른 사람들에게 영향을 줄 수 있고, 하나님은 그것을 사용하여 사람들을 그리스도께로 인도하실 수 있다는 것을 잘 알 수 있습니다. 우리가 하나님과 신실하게 동행하며 살아갈 때 다른 믿는 사람들도 그처럼 하나님과 신실하게 동행할 수 있도록 도우며 살아갑시다.

OUR IMPACT ON OTHERS

When Dr. Lee, my seminary professor, noticed that Benjie, our school custodian, would be late in joining our lunch gathering, he quietly set aside a plate of food for him. As my classmates and I talked, Dr. Lee also quietly placed the last slice of rice cake on a dish for him—adding some grated coconut as a delicious topping. This kind act of an eminent theologian was one of many—and what I consider an overflow of Dr. Lee’s faithfulness to God. Twenty years later, the deep impression he made on me remains.

The apostle John had a dear friend who also left a deep impression on many believers. They talked about Gaius as one who was faithful to God and the Scriptures, continually walking in “the truth” (3 JOHN 1:3). Gaius showed hospitality to traveling preachers of the gospel, even though they were strangers (V. 5). As a result, John said to him, “They have told the church about your love” (V. 6). Gaius’ faithfulness to God and to other believers in Jesus helped further the gospel.

The impact my teacher had on me and the impact Gaius had in his day are powerful reminders that we can leave an impact on others—one that God can use in drawing them to Christ. As we walk faithfully with God, let’s live and act in a way that helps other believers walk faithfully with Him too.
