믿음을 위한 싸움

일본에서 유학 중이던 스물일곱 살 난 학생이 후지산에 올라갔다가 일주일 사이에 두 번이나 구조되는 일이 있었습니다! 첫 번째 등반 당시 위험한 기상 조건 때문에 헬리콥터로 구조된 후, 그는 휴대전화와 다른 소지품들을 두고 왔다는 사실을 깨닫고는 나흘 뒤에 경고를 무시하고 다시 산에 올랐다가 이번에는 고산병 증세로 또다시 구조되었습니다. 이 이야기는 매우 드문 사례일 뿐만 아니라, 위험하다는 것을 알면서도 다시 그곳으로 갔다는 점 때문에 큰 화제가 되었습니다.

이 이야기는 우리의 영적 현실에서도 나타납니다. 우리는 종종 하나님이 우리를 건져 주신 그 위험한 곳으로 다시 돌아가려는 경향이 있습니다. 예수님의 동생 유다는 그의 짧은 서신서에서 비슷한 영적 긴장감을 담아냈습니다. 그는 거짓 교사들과 도덕적 타협으로 위협받는 교회를 향해 쓴 글에서, 신자들에게 자기 자신뿐만 아니라 타인을 위해서도 “믿음의 도를 위하여 힘써 싸우라”(1:3)고 촉구합니다. 유다는 그들에게 방황하는 성도들을 거짓 교사들로부터 보호하는 적극적인 역할을 맡아 그들을 “불에서 끌어내어”(23절) 구원하라고 도전합니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람으로서, 우리는 다른 이들이 넘어지고 실패하는 모습을 그저 물러서서 방관할 수 없습니다.

오늘 하나님은 우리에게 다른 이들을 구조하고, 우리가 구조받았던 자리로 되돌아가는 것에 맞서 싸우라고 부르십니다. 하나님의 은혜로 우리가 몇 번이고 구원받겠지만, 동시에 그 은혜는 우리로 하여금 이미 구원받은 사람답게 살 것을 요구합니다. 하나님의 능력을 힘입어 믿음을 위해 싸우며, 다른 이들이 “지극히 거룩한 믿음 위에 세워지도록”(20절) 도웁시다.

CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH

A twenty-seven-year-old student studying in Japan had to be rescued from Mount Fuji twice in one week! After being airlifted during his first climb due to dangerous conditions, he realized he’d left his phone and other belongings behind. Four days later, ignoring warnings, he returned to the mountain, only to need to be rescued again—this time suffering from altitude sickness. His story made headlines for its rarity but also because he’d knowingly trekked back into danger.

This account mirrors a spiritual reality—we often tend to head back to what God has rescued us from. Jude captures this tension in his little letter. Written to a church threatened by false teachers and moral compromises, he exhorted believers “to contend for the faith” (1:3), not just for themselves but for others too. Jude challenged them to snatch others “from the fire” (V. 23)—taking an active role in shielding struggling believers from false teachers. As believers in Jesus, we can’t simply stand back and watch others flounder and fail.

Today, God is calling us to rescue others and to resist returning to the place we were rescued from. His grace will rescue us more than once, but it also calls us to live like we’ve already been rescued. Through God’s strength, let’s contend for the faith and help others be built up in the “most holy faith” (V. 20).

하나님께서 우리의 눈을 밝히실 때

13세기 프랑스에서 내려오는 전설입니다. 어떤 기사가 어린 아들을 그레이하운드 사냥개 기네포르에게 맡기고 외출했습니다. 기사가 돌아와 보니 집안은 난장판이었고, 요람은 뒤집혀 있었으며 아들은 보이지 않는데 개의 입이 피로 물들어 있었습니다. 개가 아들을 해쳤다고 생각한 기사는 그 자리에서 개를 죽였습니다. 그러나 잠시 후, 기사는 개에게 물려 죽은 커다란 뱀과 요람 아래에 무사히 살아있는 아들을 발견하게 됩니다. 기네포르가 아기의 생명을 구했던 것입니다. 이 개의 영웅적인 행동과 억울한 죽음은 사람들에게 큰 감동을 주었고, 사람들은 잘못된 방식으로 기네포르를 성인처럼 숭배하기까지 했습니다.

성경에도 이와 비슷하게 주인을 보호하려다 부당하게 매를 맞은 동물의 이야기가 기록되어 있습니다. 예언자 발람이 모압 왕의 부탁을 받고 하나님의 백성을 저주하러 가는 길에 일어난 일입니다(민수기 22:4-6). 발람이 길을 갈 때, “칼을 빼어 손에 들고”(23절) 서 있는 여호와의 사자가 앞을 가로막았습니다. 위험을 감지한 발람의 나귀는 두 번이나 천사를 피했지만, 그 대가로 매질을 당한 것입니다(23, 25절). 나귀가 더 이상 천사를 피할 수 없게 되자 그 자리에 엎드려 버렸고, 발람은 또 다시 나귀를 때렸습니다(26-27절).

마침내 하나님께서 나귀의 입을 여셔서 스스로를 변호하게 하셨고(29-30 절), 그제야 발람의 눈을 밝히셔서 천사를 보게 하시고 하나님의 지시에 따르게 하셨습니다(31-32절).

동물이 우리에게 대꾸하는 것을 듣게 될 일은 없겠지만, 하나님은 여전히 예상치 못한 방식으로 우리의 눈을 밝히실 수 있습니다. 그런 일이 일어날 때, 기꺼이 그에 따를 준비를 합시다.

WHEN GOD OPENS OUR EYES

In thirteenth-century France, legend has it that a knight left his baby boy at home guarded by his greyhound dog Guinefort. The knight returned to find chaos—the crib overturned, his son nowhere to be seen, and his hound’s mouth covered in blood. Assuming the dog had harmed his son, he killed it. Afterward, he found the body of a large snake covered in dog bites—and his son unharmed under the cradle. Guinefort had saved the baby’s life. The dog’s heroism and unjust fate so moved people that they misguidedly revered Guinefort as a saint.

Scripture records a similar incident, in which an animal was unjustly punished for protecting its owner. The prophet Balaam had been hired by the Moabite king to curse God’s people (NUMBERS 22:4-6). On Balaam’s journey, an “angel of the Lord . . . with a drawn sword” (V. 23) blocked his path. Balaam’s donkey, seeing the danger, avoided the angel twice—only to be beaten for his efforts (VV. 23, 25). When the donkey could no longer evade the angel, he refused to move and was again punished (VV. 26-27).

Finally, God enabled the donkey to speak and defend itself (VV. 29-30), and then He opened Balaam’s eyes to see the angel and heed God’s instructions (V. 31-32).

We’re not likely to hear an animal talk back to us anytime soon, but God can still open our eyes in unexpected ways. When that happens, let’s be prepared to listen.

내 스마트폰은 때때로 나에게 디지털 정리를 소홀히 하고 있다고 알려줍니다. “정크 파일이 공간을 차지하고 있습니다”라는 메시지와 함께 “675MB 상당의 정크 파일을 삭제하십시오”라는 문구가 뜹니다. 사실 나는 휴대폰의 이런 잔소리를 싫어합니다. 하지만 그런 파일들을 정리하면 정말 중요한 내용을 담을 수 있는 더 많은 공간이 생깁니다. 예를 들어, 딸의 수영 대회에 갔을 때 그 성가신 “정크 파일”들 때문에 결정적인 순간을 담지 못하는 일 없이, 딸이 경주에서 이기는 모습을 온전히 동영상으로 찍을 수 있는 충분한 저장 공간을 확보하게 된다는 말입니다.

휴대폰의 정크 파일은 삭제하기 쉽습니다. 하지만 우리 ‘영혼’ 속의 “정크 파일”은 어떨까요? 휴대폰처럼 우리 영혼도 영적 성장을 가로막는 것들로 가득 찰 수 있습니다. 히브리서 저자는 이 사실을 알고, 하나님과 함께 걷는 길 에서 우리를 걸려 넘어지게 하는 것에 세심한 주의를 기울이라고 권면합니다. 히브리서는 “모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어 버리고 인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하라”(히브리서 12:1)고 도전합니다.

무엇이 당신을 짓누르고 있습니까? 무엇이 당신을 걸려 넘어지게 합니까? 히브리서는 우리에게 “믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자” (2절)고 격려합니다. 오직 예수님만이 주님 안의 풍성한 삶을 방해하는 “정크 파일”을 식별하고 삭제하도록 도와 주실 수 있습니다.

JUNK FILES

My smartphone occasionally reminds me I’m not good at digital housekeeping. “Junk files are taking up space,” the message reads. “Delete 675MB of junk files.” Now, I dislike being nagged by my phone. But if I clean out those files, I’ve got more space for things that really matter. Then, when I’m at my daughter’s swim meet, for instance, I’ll have enough digital storage to actually shoot a video of her winning a race instead of unexpectedly realizing that those pesky “junk files” have sabotaged my ability to capture the moment.

Junk files on our phones are easy to delete. But what about the “junk files” in our souls? Like our phones, our souls can be clogged with stuff that keeps us from flourishing spiritually. The author of Hebrews understood this reality, encouraging us to pay close attention to anything that trips us up in our walk with God. “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,” he writes, followed by this challenge: “And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (HEBREWS 12:1).

What weighs you down? What trips you up? Hebrews encourages us to fix “our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (V. 2), who alone can help us identify and delete the “junk files” that hinder our abundant life in Him.

하나님을 경외하는 마음

“저는 과거에 사람들을 죽였습니다.” 타니탄의 말입니다. “하지만 예수 그리스도를 믿기로 한 이후, 주님은 제가 다시는 그런 일을 저지르도록 내버려 두지 않으십니다.” 필리핀 시에라 마드레 산맥에 사는 일롱고트 부족인 타니탄은 사람을 사냥해 머리를 자르는 ‘헤드헌팅’ 문화 속에서 자랐습니다. 타니탄은 하나님을 알기 전과 후의 삶을 이렇게 비교합니다. “예전에는 내가 죽는 것이 두려웠고 사람을 죽이는 일은 두렵지 않았습니다. 하지만 지금은 사람을 죽이는 것이 두렵고 죽는 것은 두렵지 않습니다.”

플로렌티노 산토스의 ‘시에라 마드레의 헤드헌터들에게’라는 저서에 나오는 타니탄의 이야기를 읽으며, 저는 그가 하나님을 향한 새로운 두려움 이나 경외심이 어떻게 그분께 순종하고 싶은 의욕을 일으켰는지 생각해 봅니다. 성경에서 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님이 약속하신 땅에 들어가기 전 모세가 했던 말이 떠올랐습니다. “네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 요구 하시는 것이 무엇이냐 곧 네 하나님 여호와를 경외하여”(신명기 10:12)라는 말씀입니다. 하나님을 향한 경외심은 그분에 대한 순종으로 나타나야 했습 니다. 하나님의 백성은 “그의 모든 도를 행하고 그를 사랑하며... 여호와의 명령과 규례를 지킬 것”(12-13절)을 요구 받았습니다.

REVERENT FEAR OF GOD

“I killed people in the past,” Tanitan said, “but ever since I chose to believe in Jesus Christ, He will not allow me to commit such practices anymore.” Tanitan, a member of the Ilongot tribe from the Sierra Madre mountains in the Philippines, came from a culture of head-hunting—the practice of hunting humans and severing their heads. In comparing his life before he knew God to his life now, Tanitan said, “Before, I was afraid to die but not afraid to kill. Now, I am afraid to kill but not afraid to die.”

As I read Tanitan’s story in the book To the Headhunters of Sierra Madre by Florentino Santos, I thought of how his newfound fear of or reverence toward God developed his desire to obey Him. I remembered Moses’ words to the Israelites before they entered the land God promised them: “What does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God” (DEUTERONOMY 10:12). Reverence toward God was to be reflected in obedience to Him. God’s people were to “walk in obedience to Him, to love Him . . . and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees” (VV. 12-13).

As believers in Jesus, our deep respect for God’s holiness compels us to hate evil and do what pleases Him (PROVERBS 8:13). Let’s ask Him to help us make reverence toward God a way of life.

스위스로 여행을 떠나기 전, 제 머릿속에 그려진 풍경은 눈 덮인 알프스와 풀을 뜯는 염소들, 그리고 알프호른을 부는 산골 농부들의 모습이었습니다. 하지만 취리히에서 남쪽으로 차를 몰 때 풍경은 어느 도시에서나 볼 수 있는 단조롭고 복잡한 고속도로뿐이었습니다. 숙소 근처에 이르자 위험한 1차선 비포장도로를 따라 올라가야 했고, 숙소에 도착해서는 가파른 돌계단 위로 무거운 가방을 직접 옮겨야 했습니다. 탈진하고 실망한 채로 테라스에 나가 보니까 비로소 우리 앞에 놀라운 광경이 펼쳐졌습니다. 푸른 루체른 호수 위로 웅장하게 솟은 알프스 산맥과 저 아래 반딧불처럼 반짝이는 작은 마을들이 보였습니다. 그 고생은 그만한 가치가 있었습니다.

저는 “그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니하노니”(고린도후서 4:16)라는 성경구절이 떠올랐습니다. 바울 사도는 자신이 겪은 고난에 대해 “우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도... 낙심하지 아니하며”(8절)라고 기록하고 있습니다. 그는 긍정적인 전망을 보여주며 고백합니다. “우리가 잠시 받는 환난의 경한 것이 지극히 크고 영원한 영광의 중한 것을 우리에게 이루게 함이니”(17절). 그래서 우리에게 “보이지 않는 것”(18절)에 주목하고, 영원한 풍경을 소망하라고 권면한 것입니다.

THE ULTIMATE SNAPSHOT

Before our trip to Switzerland, my mental snapshot was of snowy Alps, goats grazing, and mountain farmers blowing alpine horns. However, as we drove south from Zurich, the landscape was the same drab tangle of highways we saw in any city. When we got close to our lodging, we had to drive up a precarious one-lane dirt road. At our rental place, we hauled our suitcases up steep stone stairways. Exhausted and disappointed, we finally made our way onto the patio. And there, opening up before us, stretched an extraordinary vista: the Alps rising up majestically over the blue expanse of Lake Lucerne, with small towns glittering like fireflies below us. The ordeal was worth it.

I recalled the verse, “Therefore we do not lose heart” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16). The apostle Paul writes of his own struggles: “We are hard pressed on every side, but . . . not in despair” (V. 8). He reveals his positive outlook: “Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (V. 17). He advises us to “fix our eyes . . . on what is unseen” (V. 18), to hope for that eternal landscape.

Sometimes our journey is drab and difficult. But in Christ, we’re assured that we’ll witness the ultimate snapshot. The ordeal will be worth it: His eternal glory far surpasses anything we can imagine.

그리스도 안에서 함께 성장하기

캘리포니아 몬터레이 베이에서 어느 선장이 태평양 흰비단돌고래 15마리가 2,000마리가 넘는 거대한 돌고래 떼와 합류하는 장면을 목격했습니다. 다양한 종류와 연령대의 돌고래들이 포식자로부터 자신들을 보호하고, 함께 먹이를 잡아먹으며, 공동생활을 하기 위해 무리를 짓습니다. 그래도 이런 거대한 규모와 다양성은 보기 드문 광경이었습니다.

성경은 우리 신앙의 역사에서 기초가 되는, 다양한 사람들이 모인 특별한 모임을 기록하고 있습니다. 제자들이 예루살렘에서 오순절을 기념하고 있을 때, “홀연히 하늘로부터 급하고 강한 바람 같은 소리가 있어 그들이 앉은 온 집에 가득하며”(사도행전 2:2)라는 기록이 있습니다. 그들은 “성령의 충만함을 받고” 성령이 말하게 하심을 따라 다른 언어들로 말하기 시작했습니다(4절). “천하 각국으로부터” 온 경건한 사람들이 오순절을 지키기 위해 모여 있었는데 (5절) 거기 모인 여러 나라에서 온 사람들은 제자들이 큰 소리로 하는 말을 각자 “자기의 방언으로” 알아들을 수 있었습니다(6절). 그때 베드로는 예수님을 “주와 그리스도”라고 선포했습니다(36절). 그날 약 3,000명이 믿고 세례를 받았습니다 (41절). 하나님의 백성들이 이전과 전혀 다른 공동체 삶을 살아가자, 주께서 “구원받는 사람을 날마다 더하게” 하셨습니다(47절).

성령님의 능력으로 전 세계의 하나님의 백성들은 오늘날에도 함께 모여 공동체 안에서 성장하면서 예수님을 주님으로 선포하고 있습니다. 하나님은 이처럼 우리를 통해 그분의 나라를 계속 확장해 나가실 것입니다.

GATHERING TO GROW IN CHRIST

In Monterey Bay, California, a boat captain saw fifteen Pacific white-sided dolphins join a super pod of more than two thousand dolphins. Various types and ages of dolphins gather in pods to fend off predators, feed, and socialize. Still, the size and diversity of this super pod was a rare sight to behold.

The Bible records a rare gathering of diverse people that’s foundational in our faith history. As the disciples celebrated Pentecost in Jerusalem, “a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). They were “filled with the Holy Spirit,” who enabled them to speak in different languages (V. 4). People God created “from every nation under heaven” had also gathered for Pentecost (V. 5). When they investigated the loud noise, each person “heard their own language being spoken” by the disciples (V. 6). Then Peter proclaimed Jesus as “both Lord and Messiah” (V. 36). About three thousand believed and were baptized (V. 41). As God’s people lived in community like never before, He “added to their number daily those who were being saved” (V. 47).

By the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s people around the world still gather to grow in community and proclaim Jesus as Lord. Through us, He will continue expanding His kingdom.

내 안의 그리스도

우리도 그리스도를 진실로 안다면 그렇게 살고 싶을 것입니다. 예수님을 믿고 그의 죽음과 부활을 하나님과 우리의 관계의 기반으로 받아들인다면, 이제 우리는 자신을 위해 사는 것이 아니라 예수님을 위해 살아야 합니다(갈라디아서 2:19). 우리는 예수님을 위해 살고, 예수님은 우리 안에 거하시며 우리를 통해 일하시는 것입니다. 바울 사도는 자신의 영적 변화에 대해 이렇게 고백했습니다. “이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라”(20절). 세상이 우리 안에 계시는 예수님을 볼 수 있도록 오늘 우리의 삶을 통해 그리스도의 영광의 빛이 드러나기를 바랍니다.

CHRIST IN ME

Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer became famous for his talent at age twenty. The art critics of his day called him “the greatest mind that ever expressed itself in line.” As his fame spread, influential people tried to hire him with promises of luxury and ease. Even other acclaimed artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Raphael revered his work.

In what experts consider to be his best self-portrait, Dürer mingled his physical characteristics with what he thought Jesus might have looked like. He painted himself with long, wavy hair, a beard, and eyes that seemed to convey a sense of divine purpose. While many assumed this was the artist’s prideful opinion of himself, others who knew him believed Dürer wanted to live a life that would allow people to see Jesus in him.

If we truly know Christ, this is our desire as well. Believing in Him and accepting His death and resurrection as the basis for our relationship with God means we should now live for Jesus—not for ourselves (GALATIANS 2:19). We live for Him, and He lives in us and works through us. The apostle Paul said this about his spiritual transformation: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (V. 20). May the glory of Christ shine through our lives today so that the world sees Him in us.

하나님의 풍성한 공급

2024년 허리케인 헬렌으로 인한 홍수가 노스 캐롤라이나 주의 한 작은 마을을 거의 폐허로 만든 후 그곳의 한 목사는 감동적인 일이 계속 일어나고 있음을 발견했습니다. “필요한 것이 무엇인가요?”라는 끊임없는 문의에 정신없이 답하다 보면 필요할 때마다 계속 정확하게 구호의 손길이 나타나는 것이었습니다. 휴대폰 충전기가 필요할 때는 난데없이 어떤 사람이 발전기를 차로 실어와 교회에 충전소를 설치해주는가 하면, 식수가 필요할 때는 갑자기 대량의 생수통이 도착하기도 했습니다.

우연의 일치일까요? 성경은 단순한 우연이 아니라 하나님께서 그렇게 하신다고 말합니다. “나의 하나님이 그리스도 예수 안에서 영광 가운데 그 풍성한 대로 너희 모든 쓸 것을 채우시리라”(빌립보서 4:19). 30피트(약 9미터) 높이의 거센 물살에 거의 초토화된 마을에 그 약속은 공허하게 들릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 감옥에 있으면서 이 격려의 말씀을 전했던 바울에게도 고난은 늘 겪는 일이었습니다.

바울은 절실했던 재정적 지원에 대한 감사를 전하기 위해 빌립보 교회에 서신을 보냈습니다. 빌립보 교인들 외에는 아무도 그를 보살피지 않았던 것입니다(15절). 그래서 하나님은 그들을 사용해 바울의 필요를 채워 주셨습니다. 이렇게 바울의 서신은 “모든 신령한 복을”(에베소서 1:3) 누리게 하시는 우리 구주 예수 그리스도 안에서 “그의 영광의 풍성함”을 부어 주시는 하나님께 집중 조명을 합니다. 기쁨, 평강, 진리와 구원은 하나님께서 우리에게 공급하시는 것의 한 부분입니다. 또한 자비로우신 하나님은 우리가 필요로 할 때에 한 모금의 물까지도 공급하실 것입니다. 하나님은 참으로 사랑이 많고 인자하신 분입니다.

GOD’S RICH PROVISION

After Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters nearly destroyed his small North Carolina town in 2024, a pastor noticed an inspiring pattern. As he struggled to answer the persistent question, “What do you need?” donations kept showing up exactly when he needed them. Phone chargers? Out of the blue, a man drove up with a generator, creating a charging station at the church. Drinking water? Suddenly, pallets of water bottles arrived.

Coincidence? The Bible points us to God, not mere happenstance: “My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 4:19). The promise might seem empty to a town nearly demolished by a thirty-foot wall of raging water. But Paul, who was in prison when he offered this encouragement, was no stranger to hardship.

Paul was writing to the church in Philippi to thank them for badly needed financial gifts. Except for them, he’d been neglected (V. 15). But God used them to meet his needs. So His words shined a bright light on God, who provided the “riches of His glory” found in Christ Jesus our Savior, in whom we have “every spiritual blessing” (EPHESIANS 1:3). Joy, peace, truth, and salvation are among the things He provides for us. In kindness as well, He’ll provide a drink of water too, if that’s what we need. What a loving, generous God.

하나님이 주시는 생명의 호흡

과학자들은 워터 애놀 도마뱀이 한번의 호흡으로 20분이나 물속에 있을 수 있다는 사실을 발견했습니다. 발수(撥水) 피부를 가진 이 작은 도마뱀은 깊이 잠수한 후에 공기방울을 내쉬어 그것이 주둥이 끝에 붙어있게 합니다. 그런 후에 이 영리한 도마뱀은 그 방울 속의 공기를 반복해 호흡하는데 과학자들은 이것을 공기를 가둬놓고 재활용하는 것으로 생각합니다. 이 워터 애놀 도마뱀이 특이한 능력을 가지고 있기는 하지만 이 도마뱀도 다른 많은 생명체들처럼 살기 위해서는 역시 숨을 쉬어야 합니다.

창세기 2장은 하나님께서 “생기를 [아담의] 코에 불어넣으시니 사람이 생령이 되었다”(7절)고 기록합니다. 하나님이 “땅과 하늘”에 있는 모든 것을 창조하실 때(4절), “땅의 흙으로” 사람도 지으셨습니다(7절). 그러나 사람이 온전한 생명체가 되기 위해서는 하나님이 주시는 생명의 호흡이 필요했습니다. 하나님은 첫 인간을 살아 있는 존재, 곧 영혼이 살아 있는 존재로 만드셨습니다. 또한 하나님은 이후에 아담의 갈비뼈로 하와를 지으셨습니다(22절). 우리 인간은 영적인 존재이기 때문에 그리스도를 믿음으로써 하나님과 교제할 수 있습니다. 예수님도 제자들을 향해 “숨을 쉬며”, “성령을 받으라”고 하셨습니다(요한복음 20:22). 어느 주석가는 이렇게 “성령을 ‘들이쉬는 것’은 하나님과의 교제를 누리는데 반드시 필요하다”고 말합니다.

우리가 들이쉬는 호흡은 하나님께서 주신 육체적 생명의 선물입니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리에게 그 호흡은 또한 우리에게 영생이 있음과 생명을 주시는 하나님의 영이 우리 안에 거하신다는 것을 말해줍니다(로마서 8:11).

GOD’S BREATH OF LIFE

Researchers discovered that the water anole can stay underwater for twenty minutes without a fresh gulp of air. The tiny lizard has water-repelling skin, and after taking a deep dive it exhales a bubble of air that sticks to its snout. The clever creature then rebreathes the bubble again and again—something scientists believe is the recycling of the trapped air supply. Although water anoles possess this special ability, like many creatures, they must breathe to live.

In Genesis 2, we read that God “breathed into [Adam’s] nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (V. 7). As He created all things in “the heavens and the earth” (V. 4), He also created man from “the dust of the ground” (V. 7). But it took God’s breath of life to make His creation fully alive. He transformed the first human into a living being—a living soul. Later, He formed Eve from Adam’s rib (V. 22). As spiritual beings, we’re able to enjoy fellowship with Him by belief in Christ. Jesus “breathed on” the disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (JOHN 20:22). One commentator writes that this “ ‘inbreathing’ of the Holy Spirit is essential in order for people to enjoy fellowship with God.”

Each breath we take is God’s gift of physical life. As believers in Jesus, it’s also a reflection of our eternal life and being indwelt by the life-giving Spirit (ROMANS 8:11).

하나님이 주시는 용기

어느 회사 대표가 거친 말로 직원들에게 상처를 주고 있었습니다. 그러나 아무도 그에게 반박하지 못했습니다. 진을 포함한 모두가 그를 두려워 했습니다. 어느 날 대표가 한 신입사원을 심하게 꾸짖어 결국 그녀는 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 사무실 안의 모든 사람이 침묵하는 모습을 본 진이 입을 열었습니다.

진이 그때를 말합니다. “그에게 사람들을 대하는 방식이 잘못되었다고 말했어요. 누군가 그에게 그렇게 맞선 건 처음이어서 그가 아주 놀랐습니다. 그는 그후에도 변하지 않았지만 나는 그때 나선 것을 잘했다고 생각합니다.”

성경은 많은 이들이 두려워하던 문제에 맞섰던 한 사람에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. 다윗의 용사 삼마는 다윗이 왕이 되기 전 어려움에 처해 있을 때 합류했는데(사무엘상 22:1–2 참조) 하나님은 그를 사용해서 블레셋을 물리쳤습 니다. “블레셋 사람들이... 녹두나무가 가득한 한쪽 밭에 모이매 백성들은 블레셋 사람들 앞에서 도망하였습니다”(사무엘하 23:11). 그러나 오직 삼마만이 용기를 내어 이스라엘의 식량을 지켰습니다. 혼자서 블레셋 군대에 맞서는 것은 곧 죽음을 의미했지만 삼마는 “그 밭 가운데 서서 막아 냈습니다”(12절).

하나님께서 삼마를 도와 블레셋을 물리치신 것입니다(12절). 그는 밭을 지키기 위해 나선 아마도 유일한 이스라엘 백성이었지만 사실은 혼자가 아니 었습니다. 하나님이 그와 함께하셔서 그날에 큰 승리를 주신 것입니다. 우리도 다른 사람들이 모두 회피하는 도전에 맞서라는 부르심을 받을 때가 있을 것입니다. 그럴 때 삼마처럼 하나님의 임재와 도우심에 의지해 굳게 서도록 합시다.

THE COURAGE GOD GIVES

The CEO was hurting employees with his sharp tongue. No one dared confront him. Everyone was afraid of him, including Gene. But one day the CEO berated a new employee, reducing her to tears. When Gene saw how everyone in the room stayed silent, he spoke up.

“I told him the way he was treating people was wrong,” Gene recalls. “He was astonished; it was the first time someone stood up to him. He didn’t change, but I’m glad I spoke up.”

Scripture tells us of another man who stood up to a challenge many were afraid of. Shammah, a military warrior of David, came to the future king from difficult circumstances (SEE 1 SAMUEL 22:1-2), but God used him to defeat the Philistines. “When the Philistines banded together at . . . a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them” (2 SAMUEL 23:11). Only Shammah had the courage to defend Israel’s food supply. Being the lone man against the Philistine army meant death, but Shammah “took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it” (V. 12).

God helped Shammah defeat the Philistines (V. 12). He may have been the only Israelite in the field, but he wasn’t alone—God was with him, giving him great victory that day. There may be times when we’re called to stand up to a challenge that everyone else is avoiding. Like Shammah, let’s take our stand, relying on God’s presence and help.
