그리스도 안에서 끝까지 한 길을 가기

회색의 간달프가 백색의 사루만과 맞서게 되었을 때, 사루만이 악마 사우론의 힘으로부터 중간계를 보호해야 할 그의 임무를 배반한 것이 분명해졌습니다. 게다가 사루만은 사우론과 동맹을 맺기까지 했습니다! J. R. R. 톨킨의 고전 작품을 바탕으로 한 영화 ‘반지 원정대’의 그 장면에서 전에 친구였던 두 사람은 웅장한 선과 악의 싸움을 벌입니다. 사루만이 끝까지 한 길을 가서 자신이 옳다고 생각한 일을 했더라면 어땠을까요!

사울 왕도 끝까지 한 길을 가지 못했습니다. 한 기록에 따르면, 그는 올바르게 “[이스라엘]에서 신접한 자와 박수를 쫓아내었습니다”(사무엘상 28:3). 재미 삼아 주술을 하는 것을 하나님이 “가증하다”고 선언하셨기 때문에 (신명기 18:9-12) 그렇게 한 것은 잘한 일이었습니다. 그러나 블레셋 대군을 물리칠 방법을 하나님께 구하였으나 그의 지난 날의 잘못 때문에 하나님이 응답하시지 않자, 사울은 할 수 없이 “나를 위하여 신접한 여인을 찾으라 내가 그리로 가서 그에게 물으리라”(사무엘상 28:7)라고 하였습니다. 완전한 반전이 아닐 수 없습니다! 사울은 자신이 옳다고 생각하고 있는 자신의 신의를 어기면서 또 다시 실패하고 말았습니다.

천 년 후, 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라”(마태복음 5:37). 다시 말해, 우리가 그리스도께 순종하기로 결심했다면 우리의 맹세를 지키고 진실된 모습으로 사는 것이 정말 중요합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로, 그런 일들을 하면서 한 길을 계속 가도록 합시다.

STAYING THE COURSE IN CHRIST

As Gandalf the Grey confronted Saruman the White, it became clear that the latter had turned from what he was supposed to be doing—helping to protect Middle-earth from the power of the evil being Sauron. What’s more, Saruman had allied with Sauron! In this scene from the film The Fellowship of the Ring, based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic work, the two former friends then engage in an epic good-versus-evil battle. If only Saruman had stayed the course and done what he knew was right!

King Saul also had trouble staying the course. In one account, he rightly “expelled the mediums and spiritists from [Israel]” (1 SAMUEL 28:3). Good move, for God had declared that dabbling in the occult was “detestable” (DEUTERONOMY 18:9-12). But when God didn’t answer the king’s plea—due to his prior failures—for how to deal with a massive Philistine army, Saul caved: “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her” (1 SAMUEL 28:7). Talk about a complete reversal! Saul failed once more as he went against his own decree—what he knew was right.

A millennium later, Jesus said to His disciples, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” (MATTHEW 5:37). In other words, if we’ve committed ourselves to obeying Christ, it’s vital that we keep our oaths and be truthful. Let’s stay the course in doing those things as God helps us.

우리 스스로 구하려고 애쓰는 것

오래 전, 뉴욕시에서 엘리베이터에 갇힌 사람들에게 침착하고 안전하게 기다리는 법을 알려주는 “안전하게 가만히 있기” 광고 캠페인을 시작했습니다. 전문가들의 보고서를 보면 엘리베이터에 갇힌 사람들이 문을 강제로 열거나 다른 수단으로 탈출하려다 죽은 사례들이 있었다고 합니다. 대처할 최선의 방법은 단순히 알람 버튼을 눌러 도움을 요청하고, 구조대원들이 도착하기를 기다리는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 죄의 나락에 빠진 사람들을 돕기 위한 아주 다른 방식의 구조 계획을 설명합니다. 그는 에베소 사람들에게 그들이 “[그들의] 죄로 죽어” (에베소서 2:1) 영적으로 완전히 무력한 상태에 있다는 사실을 상기시켰습니다. 그들은 덫에 걸려 사탄에 굴복하고(2절) 하나님께 복종하기를 거부하여 하나님의 분노를 샀습니다. 그렇다고 하나님은 그들을 영적인 어두움에 그대로 가두어두지 않으셨습니다. 바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 “은혜로 구원을 받았다”(5, 8절)고 기록합니다. 하나님의 구원 계획에 응답하게 되면 믿음이 뒤따라오게 됩니다. 믿음이란 우리 스스로 구하려고 애쓰기를 포기하고 예수님께 우리의 구원을 요청하는 것을 의미합니다.

죄의 덫에서 벗어나는 것은 우리로 말미암은 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜이며, 오직 예수님을 통해 주시는 “하나님의 선물”입니다(8절).

TRYING TO SAVE OURSELVES

Many years ago, New York City launched a “Stay Safe. Stay Put” ad campaign to educate people on how to stay calm and be safe when trapped in an elevator. Experts reported that some trapped passengers had died when they tried to pry open the elevator doors or attempted exiting by some other means. The best plan of action is to simply use the alarm button to call for help and wait for emergency responders to arrive.

The apostle Paul spelled out a very different type of rescue plan—one to help those trapped in the downward pull of sin. He reminded the Ephesians of their utter spiritual helplessness— being truly “dead in [their] . . . sins” (EPHESIANS 2:1). They were trapped, obeying the devil (V. 2), and refusing to submit to God. This resulted in them being the subject of God’s wrath. But He didn’t leave them trapped in spiritual darkness. And those who believe in Jesus, the apostle wrote, “by grace . . . have been saved” (VV. 5, 8). A response to God’s rescue initiative results in faith. And faith means we’ll give up on trying to save ourselves and call on Jesus to rescue us.

By God’s grace, being rescued from sin’s trap doesn’t originate with us. It’s “the gift of God” through Jesus alone (V. 8).

꽃피는 사막

백 년 전에는 울창한 숲이 에티오피아 국토의 약 40퍼센트를 차지했지만, 현재는 4퍼센트 정도밖에 되지 않습니다. 나무를 보호하지 않고 경작지로 개간한 것이 생태학적 위기로 이어진 것입니다. 남아있는 작은 수풀들의 대부분은 교회들이 보호하고 있습니다. 여러 세기 동안 에티오피아 정교회 테와히도 교회에 속한 여러 지역 교회들이 척박한 사막 한가운데서 이 오아시스들을 가꾸어 왔습니다. 항공 사진을 보면 갈색 모래 바다에 둘러싸인 푸른 섬들을 볼 수 있습니다. 교회 지도자들은 나무를 돌보는 것이 하나님이 창조하신 자연의 청지기로서 하나님께 순종하는 일이라고 주장합니다.

BLOOMING DESERTS

A century ago, lush forest covered roughly 40 percent of Ethiopia, but today it’s around 4 percent. Clearing acreage for crops while failing to protect the trees has led to an ecological crisis. The vast majority of the remaining small patches of green are protected by churches. For centuries, local Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido churches have nurtured these oases in the midst of the barren desert. If you look at aerial images, you see verdant islands surrounded by brown sand. Church leaders insist that watching over the trees is part of their obedience to God as stewards of His creation.

The prophet Isaiah wrote to Israel, a people who lived in an arid land where bare desert and brutal droughts threatened. And Isaiah described the future God intended, where “the desert and
the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom” (ISAIAH 35:1). God intends to heal His people, but He intends to heal the earth too. He’ll “create new heavens and a new earth” (65:17). In God’s renewed world, “the desert will bloom with flowers” (35:2 NIRV).

God’s care for creation—including people—motivates us to care for it too. We can live in sync with His ultimate plan for a healed and whole world—being caretakers of what He’s made. We can join God in making all kinds of deserts bloom with life and beauty.

환상을 볼 수 있는 눈

조이는 오랫동안 알코올 중독과 정신 건강 문제로 힘들어하고 있는 친척 샌디를 염려하고 있었습니다. 조이가 샌디의 아파트에 찾아갔을 때, 문은 잠겨 있었고 아무도 없는 것 같았습니다. 다른 사람들과 함께 샌디를 찾을 계획을 세우고 나서 조이는 기도했습니다. “하나님, 제가 못 보고 있는 것을 볼 수 있도록 도와주세요.” 그들이 아파트를 떠날 때 조이는 샌디의 아파트를 뒤돌아보았는데 커튼이 미세하게 움직이는 것을 보았습니다. 그 순간, 조이는 샌디가 살아 있음을 알았습니다. 샌디를 구하기 위해서 긴급 구조를 요청해야 했지만, 조이는 기도가 응답된 것이 정말 기뻤습니다.

EYES TO SEE

Joy was concerned for her relative Sandy, who for years had struggled with alcoholism and mental-health issues. When she went to Sandy’s apartment, the doors were locked, and it appeared vacant. As she and others planned their search for Sandy, Joy prayed, “God, help me to see what I’m not seeing.” As they were leaving, Joy looked back at Sandy’s apartment and saw the tiniest movement of a curtain. In that moment, she knew that Sandy was alive. Although it took emergency assistance to reach her, Joy rejoiced in this answered prayer.

The prophet Elisha knew the power of asking God to reveal to him His reality. When the Syrian army surrounded their city, Elisha’s servant shivered in fear. Not the man of God, however, for with God’s help he glimpsed the unseen. Elisha prayed that the servant too would see, and “the Lord opened the servant’s eyes” to see “the hills full of horses and chariots of fire” (2 KINGS 6:17).

God lifted the veil between the spiritual and physical worlds for Elisha and his servant. Joy believes God helped her see the tiny flicker of the curtain, giving her hope. We too can ask Him to give us the spiritual vision to understand what’s happening around us, whether with our loved ones or in our communities. And we too can be agents of His love, truth, and compassion.

하나님이 주신 여러 가지 은사

수십 년 전 한 대학 수련회에 갔을 때 참가한 모든 사람들이 성격유형검사에 대해 말하고 있었습니다. 한 사람이 “나는 ISTJ입니다!”라고 말하자 다른 사람이 “나는 ENFP예요.”라고 흥겹게 말했습니다. 어리둥절했던 나는 농담조로 “나는 ABCXYZ입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

그 이후로 나는 그 성격유형검사(Myers-Briggs), 그리고 정신작용 (DiSC) 평가와 같은 다른 검사들에 대해 많은 것을 알게 되었습니다. 나는 그런 검사들이 도움이 되는 밝히 드러내는 방법들로 우리의 성향이나 장단점을 조명하면서 우리 자신과 다른 사람들을 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있어서 좋다고 생각합니다. 남용되지만 않는다면 그 검사들은 하나님이 우리의 성장을 돕기 위해 사용하실 유용한 도구가 될 수 있습니다.

GOD-GIVEN GIFTS

Decades ago, I went to a college retreat where everyone was talking about a personality test. “I’m an ISTJ!” one said. “I’m an ENFP,” another chirped. I was mystified. “I’m an ABCXYZ,” I joked.

Since then, I’ve learned a lot about that test (the Myers-Briggs) and others such as the DiSC assessment. I find them fascinating because they can help us understand ourselves and others in helpful, revealing ways—shedding light on our preferences, strengths, and weaknesses. Provided we don’t overuse them, they can be a useful tool God uses to help us grow.

Scripture doesn’t offer us personality tests. But it does affirm each person’s uniqueness in God’s eyes (SEE PSALM 139:14-16; JEREMIAH 1:5), and it shows us how God equips all of us with a unique personality and unique gifts to serve others in His kingdom. In Romans 12:6, Paul begins to unpack this idea, when he says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

Those gifts, Paul explains, are not for us alone but for the purpose of serving God’s people, Christ’s body (V. 5). They’re an expression of His grace and goodness, working in and through all of us. They invite each of us to be a unique vessel in God’s service.

사랑의 순종

내 결혼식 중에 목사님이 “죽음이 갈라놓을 때까지 남편을 사랑하고 존경하며 순종하기로 약속합니까?” 하고 물었습니다. 나는 약혼자를 흘낏 쳐다보며 “순종하라고요?”라고 속삭였습니다. 우리는 사랑과 존경으로 맺어진 것이지, 결혼서약이 암시하는 것처럼 맹목적인 순종으로 맺어진 것이 아니기 때문이었습니다. 시아버지는 내가 그 ‘순종하라’는 단어의 의미를 생각하면서 “예”라고 대답하던, 눈이 휘둥그레진 그 순간을 영상에 담았습니다.

오랜 결혼 생활 동안 하나님은 ‘순종하라’는 말에 대한 내 거부감이 부부 사이의 아주 복잡한 관계와 아무 상관이 없다는 점을 깨닫게 해주셨습니다. 나는 순종의 의미를 “복종”이나 “강제적인 굴복”이라고 생각했었는데, 성경은 그런 의미로 말하지 않습니다. 오히려, 성경에 나오는 ‘순종’이란 말은 우리가 하나님을 사랑할 수 있는 여러 방법들을 표현하고 있습니다. 결혼 30주년을 기념하는 이 순간에도 우리는 여전히 성령님의 능력으로 예수님과 우리 서로를 사랑하는 것을 배우면서 살고 있습니다.

예수님은 “너희가 나를 사랑하면 나의 계명을 지키리라”(요한복음 14:15) 고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리가 주님을 지속적으로 사랑하고 주님과 친밀한 관계를 맺고 있을 때 성경말씀을 순종할 수 있다는 것을 보여주셨습니다 (16-21절).

예수님의 사랑은 이기적이지 않고 무조건적이며 절대로 강압적이거나 폭력적이지 않습니다. 우리의 모든 관계 속에서 주님을 따르고 공경할 때, 성령님은 주님께 순종하는 것이 신뢰와 경배를 드러내는 지혜와 사랑의 행위임을 깨닫도록 도와주실 것입니다.

LOVING OBEDIENCE

During our wedding ceremony, our minister said to me, “Do you promise to love, honor, and obey your husband, until death do you part?” Glancing at my fiancé, I whispered, “Obey?” We’d built our relationship on love and respect—not blind obedience, as the vows seemed to suggest. My husband’s father captured on film that wide-eyed moment when I processed the word obey and said, “I do.”

Over the years, God has shown me that my resistance to the word obey had nothing to do with the incredibly complex relationship between a husband and wife. I’d understood obey to mean “subjugated” or “forced submission,” which Scripture doesn’t support. Rather, the word obey in the Bible expresses the many ways we can love God. As my husband and I celebrate thirty years of marriage, through the power of the Holy Spirit we’re still learning to love Jesus and each other.

When Jesus said, “If you love me, obey my commandments” (JOHN 14:15 NLT), He showed us that obedience to the Scriptures would be the result of an ongoing loving and intimate relationship with Him (VV. 16-21).

Jesus’ love is selfless, unconditional, and never forceful or abusive. As we follow and honor Him in all our relationships, the Holy Spirit can help us see obedience to Him as a wise and loving act of trust and worship.

어느 날 아침 딘이 집을 나서자 친구들이 풍선을 들고 기다리고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 친구 조시가 앞으로 나와 “우리가 네가 쓴 시를 경연대회에 응모했었어.”라고 말하며 봉투 하나를 건네주었습니다. 그 안에는 “1등”이라고 적힌 카드가 들어 있었고, 곧 모두가 기쁨의 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 딘의 친구들은 그의 글쓰기 재능을 확인하는 멋진 일을 해낸 것입니다.

기뻐서 운다는 건 좀 역설적입니다. 눈물은 보통 기쁨이 아니라 고통에 대한 반응이어서 기쁘면 보통 웃지 눈물을 흘리진 않습니다. 이탈리아의 심리학자들은 깊은 사랑을 받는다거나 중요한 목표를 달성했다고 느낄 때처럼 개인적으로 깊은 의미의 순간에 기쁨의 눈물을 흘린다고 하면서, 기쁨의 눈물은 우리 삶의 의미를 나타내는 지표라고 결론을 내렸습니다.

나는 예수님이 가신 곳마다 기쁨의 눈물이 터져 나왔으리라 상상합니다. 예수님이 날 때부터 맹인인 남자를 치유했을 때 그 부모가 어찌 기쁨의 눈물을 흘리지 않을 수 있었겠으며(요한복음 9:1-9), 죽었던 오빠가 다시 살아났을 때 마리아와 마르다가 어찌 기쁨의 눈물을 흘리지 않을 수 있었겠습니까(11:38- 44)? 하나님의 백성들이 회복된 세상으로 옮겨질 때, “기쁨의 눈물을 흘리며 돌아오리니 나의 인도함을 받으리라”(예레미야 31:9)고 하나님은 말씀하십니다.

만약 기쁨의 눈물이 우리 삶의 의미를 보여준다면, 앞으로 다가올 위대한 그날을 상상해 보십시오. 눈물이 우리의 뺨을 타고 흘러내릴 때, 우리는 삶의 의미가 항상 주님과 친밀하게 사는 것이라는 것을 의심의 여지없이 알게 될 것입니다.

TEARS OF JOY

Leaving home one morning, Dean found some friends waiting with balloons. His friend Josh stepped forward. “We entered your poems in a competition,” he said, before handing Dean an envelope. Inside was a card that read ‘“First Prize,” and soon everyone was crying tears of joy. Dean’s friends had done a beautiful thing, confirming his writing talent.

Weeping for joy is a paradoxical experience. Tears are normally a response to pain, not joy; and joy is normally expressed with laughter, not tears. Italian psychologists have noted that tears of joy come at times of deep personal meaning—like when we feel deeply loved or achieve a major goal. This led them to conclude that tears of joy are pointers to the meaning of our lives.

I imagine tears of joy erupting everywhere Jesus went. How could the parents of the man born blind not weep for joy when Jesus healed him (JOHN 9:1-9), or Mary and Martha after He raised their brother from death (11:38-44)? When God’s people are brought into a restored world, “Tears of joy will stream down their faces,” God says, “and I will lead them home with great care” (JEREMIAH 31:9 NLT).

If tears of joy show us the meaning of our lives, imagine that great day to come. As tears stream down our faces, we’ll know without doubt that the meaning of life has always been to live intimately with Him.

믿음의 승리

네 살 난 꼬마 캘빈의 정기 건강검진에서 아이의 몸에 예상치 못한 몇 개의 반점이 발견되었습니다. 병원에 있는 동안 아이는 주사를 맞고 주사 맞은 부위에 반창고를 붙였습니다. 집에 와 그 반창고를 떼려 할 때 캘빈은 무서워서 울었습니다. 아버지는 아이를 달래며 말했습니다. “캘빈, 아빠가 너를 절대로 아프게 하지 않을 줄 알지?” 아버지는 아들이 반창고 떼는 것을 무서워하기보다 자신을 더 믿어 주기를 원했습니다.

네 살짜리 아이들만 고통 앞에서 약해지는 것이 아닙니다. 수술이나 사랑하는 사람과의 이별, 정신적 또는 심리적 어려움, 그 외 여러 것들이 우리를 두렵게 하고 한숨짓게 하며, 고통으로 울부짖고 신음하게 합니다.

다윗이 두려움으로 가득했던 순간 중의 하나는 시기심 많은 사울 왕을 피하다가 블레셋 땅으로 도망하게 되었을 때였습니다. 불레셋 사람들이 골리앗을 죽인 자신을 알아보자, 다윗은 자신에게 무슨 일이 생기지 않을까 걱정했습니다(사무엘상 21:10-11 참조). “다윗이... 가드 왕 아기스를 심히 두려워하여”(12절). 그 힘들었던 상황을 되돌아보며 다윗은 이렇게 썼습니다. “내가 두려워하는 날에는 내가 주를 의지하리이다... 내가 하나님을 의지하였은즉 두려워하지 아니하리니”(시편 56:3-4).

삶의 고난이 닥쳐 두려울 때 어떻게 해야 할까요? 우리는 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지를 믿고 의지해야 합니다.

THE TRIUMPH OF FAITH

A routine wellness check for little four-year-old Calvin revealed a few unexpected spots on his body. During the visit, he was given some shots, and the injection site was covered with a bandage. At home, when the time came to remove the small adhesive covering, Calvin whimpered with fear. Seeking to console his son, his father said, “Calvin, you know I’d never do anything to hurt you.” His father wanted his son to trust him more than fearing the removal of the bandage.

Four-year-olds aren’t the only ones who grow faint in the face of discomfort. Surgeries, separation from loved ones, mental or psychological challenges—and more—prompt our fears, sighs, cries, and groans.

One of David’s fear-filled moments was when he found himself in Philistine territory while fleeing a jealous King Saul. When he was recognized, he was anxious about what might happen to him (SEE 1 SAMUEL 21:10-11): “David . . . was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath” (V. 12). Reflecting on this uncomfortable situation, David wrote, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. . . . In God I trust and am not afraid” (PSALM 56:3-4).

What shall we do when life’s discomforts stir up our fears? We can put our trust in our heavenly Father.

기도가 중요하다

“곧 있을 뇌 검사를 위해 기도해 주세요.” “우리 아이들이 교회로 돌아오기를.” “아내를 잃은 데이브에게 위로가 있기를.” 카드 사역 팀은 매주 이런 기도 제목들을 받아 중보기도하고 한 사람 한 사람에게 짧은 손글씨 편지를 보냅니다. 이런 요청들이 쇄도하지만, 우리의 수고는 별 것 아닌 것 같고 눈에 띄지 않는 것처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 그러나 최근 아내를 잃은 데이브에게서 사랑하는 아내의 부고 기사와 함께 동봉된 진심 어린 감사 카드를 받고 나의 생각이 바뀌었습니다. 기도의 중요성을 다시 깨닫게 된 것입니다.

예수님은 우리가 간절히, 자주, 그리고 소망의 믿음을 갖고 기도해야 한다는 본을 보여주셨습니다. 이 세상에 계셨던 시간은 짧았지만, 예수님은 홀로 떨어져서 기도하는 일에 우선순위를 두셨습니다(마가복음 1:35; 6:46; 14:32).

수백 년 전, 유다 왕 히스기야도 이 기도의 교훈을 알았습니다. 자신이 곧 병으로 죽을 것이라는 것을 듣고(열왕기하 20:1) 괴로움과 비통에 빠진 히스기야는 “낯을 벽으로 향하고 여호와께 기도하였습니다”(2절). 하나님은 바로 응답하셔서 히스기야의 병을 고치시고 그의 삶을 15 년 연장시켜 주셨으며, 나라를 적에게서 구해주겠다고 약속하셨습니다(5-6절). 하나님은 히스기야가 선한 삶을 살아서가 아니라, “[그분을] 위하고 또 [그분의] 종 다윗을 위하여” (6절) 기도에 응답하신 것입니다. 우리가 구한 모든 것을 항상 응답 받지는 못해도, 우리는 하나님이 모든 기도에 역사하신다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

PRAYER MATTERS

“Prayers for an upcoming brain scan.” “That my kids would come back to church.” “Comfort for Dave, who lost his wife.” Our card ministry team receives a weekly list of prayer requests like these so we can pray and send each person a handwritten note. The requests are overwhelming, and our efforts can feel small and unnoticed. That changed after I received a heartfelt thank-you card from Dave, the recently bereaved husband, with a copy of his beloved wife’s obituary. I realized anew that prayer matters.

Jesus modeled that we should pray earnestly, often, and with hopeful faith. His time on earth was limited, but He prioritized getting away by Himself to pray (MARK 1:35; 6:46; 14:32).

Hundreds of years earlier, Hezekiah, the king of Judah, learned this lesson too. He was told that an illness would soon take his life (2 KINGS 20:1). In distress and weeping bitterly, Hezekiah “turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord” (V. 2). In this instance, God’s response was immediate. He healed Hezekiah’s sickness, added fifteen years to his life, and promised to rescue the kingdom from an adversary (VV. 5-6). God answered his prayer not because Hezekiah was living a good life, but “for [his] own honor and for the sake of [his] servant David” (V. 6 NLT). We may not always receive what we ask for, but we can be sure that God is working in and through every prayer.

신뢰할 수 있는 창조자

메리 셸리의 소설 프랑켄슈타인에 나오는 “괴물”은 아주 잘 알려진 문학 작품 속의 인물로, 우리의 문화적인 상상력을 사로잡습니다. 그런데 이 소설의 애독자들은 작가가 실제로 그 괴물을 만든 망상에 찬 과학자 빅터 프랑켄슈타인을 진짜 괴물로 그리고 있다는 점을 알게 됩니다. 과학자 빅터는 이 지능을 가진 생명체를 만들어놓고 그 생명체에게 어떤 지침이나 동료애, 행복에의 희망을 주기를 거부하고 있어서 그 생명체는 절망과 분노로 이어지는 몰락이 확실해 보입니다. 그 생명체는 빅터를 마주보고 “나를 지은 당신은 나를 산산이 부수고 승리할 것”이라며 한탄합니다.

성경은 만물의 진정한 창조주이신 하나님은 이와는 얼마나 다른지 보여줍니다. 그분은 자신의 피조물들을 변함없고 지침 없이 끝까지 사랑하십니다. 하나님은 변덕이 아닌 참된 사랑으로 아름답고 “매우 좋은” 세상을 창조하셨습니다(창세기 1:31). 그리고 인류가 하나님에게서 돌아서서 괴물 같은 사탄을 따랐을 때에도 인류를 향한 하나님의 약속과 사랑은 변하지 않았습니다.

예수님이 니고데모에게 설명하신 것처럼, 하나님은 그분의 피조물을 향한 아주 크신 사랑 때문에 세상을 구원하시기 위해 그분의 가장 소중한 “독생자”(요한복음 3:16) 예수님을 기꺼이 보내주셨습니다. 예수님은 “그를 믿는 자마다 영생을 얻게 하려 하시려고”(15절) 자신을 희생하여 우리 죄의 결과를 짊어지셨습니다.

우리에게는 우리의 온 마음과 삶을 다해 신뢰할 수 있는 창조주 하나님이 있습니다.

A CREATOR WE CAN TRUST

The “monster” in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is one of the most widely known literary characters, captivating our cultural imagination. But close readers of the beloved novel know that a strong case can be made that Shelley actually portrays Victor Frankenstein, the delusional scientist who created the creature, as the real monster. After creating an intelligent creature, Victor denies him any guidance, companionship, or hope of happiness— seemingly guaranteeing the creature’s descent into desperation and rage. Confronting Victor, the creature laments, “You, my creator, would tear me to pieces and triumph.”

Scripture reveals how different the true Creator of all things is—with unchanging, tireless love for His creation. God didn’t create on a whim, but out of love created a beautiful, “very good” world (GENESIS 1:31). And even when humanity turned from Him to choose monstrous evil instead, God’s commitment to and love for humanity didn’t change.

As Jesus explained to Nicodemus, God’s love for His creation was so great He was willing to give even what was most dear to Him—“his one and only Son” (JOHN 3:16)—that the world might be saved. Jesus sacrificed Himself, bearing the consequences of our sin, so “that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him” (V. 15).

We have a Creator we can trust with our hearts and lives.
