우리를 깨끗하게 하시는 예수님

나는 첫 단기선교로 브라질 아마존의 정글로 들어가 강가에 교회 짓는 일을 도왔습니다. 어느 날 오후 우리는 그 지역에서 정수기가 있는 몇 안 되는 집 한 곳을 방문했습니다. 집 주인이 탁한 우물물을 정수기 위에 부으니 몇 분 만에 불순물이 모두 제거되고 깨끗하고 맑은 식수가 되었습니다. 나는 바로 그 집 거실에서 그리스도로 깨끗해진다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 눈으로 보고 알게 되었습니다.

우리가 죄와 수치를 지닌 채 처음 예수님께 나아가 용서를 구하고 예수님을 우리의 구주로 영접하면, 주님은 우리를 죄에서 깨끗케 하시고 새롭게 해주십니다. 탁한 물이 변하여 맑은 식수가 되는 것처럼 우리가 깨끗해지는 것입니다. 예수님이 치르신 희생으로 우리가 하나님 앞에 바로 서 있다는 사실 (고린도후서 5:21)과 동이 서에서 먼 것 같이 하나님이 우리의 죄를 멀리 옮기신다 (시편 103:12)는 것을 알 때 얼마나 큰 기쁨이 되는지 모릅니다.

그러나 요한 사도는 이 사실이 우리가 다시는 죄를 짓지 않는다는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니라고 일깨워 줍니다. 하지만 우리가 죄를 지을 때 우리는 정수기가 보여주는 것처럼 다시 깨끗해질 수 있음을 확신할 수 있으며, “우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것”(요한1서 1:9)임을 알고 평안을 얻을 수 있습니다. 그리스도께서 우리를 끊임없이 깨끗케 하신다는 사실을 확실히 알며 살아가도록 합시다.

CLEANSED BY CHRIST

My first short-term missions trip was to the Amazon jungle in Brazil to help build a church by the river. One afternoon, we visited one of the few homes in the area that had a water filter. When our host poured murky well water into the top of the contraption, within minutes all the impurities were removed and clean, clear drinking water appeared. Right there in the man’s living room, I saw a reflection of what it means to be cleansed by Christ.

When we first come to Jesus with our guilt and shame and ask Him to forgive us and we receive Him as our Savior, He cleanses us from our sins and makes us new. We’re purified just like the murky water was transformed into clean drinking water. What a joy it is to know we are in right standing with God because of Jesus’ sacrifice (2 CORINTHIANS 5:21) and to know God removes our sins as far as the east is from the west (PSALM 103:12).

But the apostle John reminds us that this doesn’t mean we’ll never sin again. When we do sin, we can be assured by the image of a water filter and be comforted by knowing that as “we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:9).

Let’s live confidently knowing that we’re continually being cleansed by Christ.

은혜로 받은 것을 은혜로 나눔

대학을 마친 아내 캐리와 나에게는 수천 달러의 빚이 남아 있었는데 이것을 좀 더 낮은 이자의 대출로 바꾸고 싶었습니다. 그래서 그 지역의 은행에 대출을 신청했더니 그 도시에서 오래 살거나 일하지 않았다는 이유로 거절당했습니다. 며칠 후 우리 교회의 장로인 친구 밍에게 이 이야기를 했더니, 그는 문을 나서며 “내 아내와 한번 이야기해 볼께요.”라고 했습니다.

몇 시간이 지나 밍에게서 전화가 와서는 “당신에게 필요한 돈을 앤과 내가 무이자로 빌려줄게요.”라고 했습니다. 나는 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰라 “그런 부탁은 할 수가 없어요.”라고 하니, 밍은 유쾌하게 “당신이 부탁하는 게 아니예요!”라고 대답했습니다. 그들은 우리에게 흔쾌히 돈을 빌려주었고, 캐리와 나는 그 빚을 최대한 빨리 갚았습니다.

나는 밍과 앤이 하나님을 향한 사랑으로 그렇게 은혜를 베푼 것이라고 믿습니다. 성경은 “은혜를 베풀며 꾸어 주는 자는 잘 되나니 그 일을 정의로 행하리로다”(시편 112:5)라고 말합니다. 하나님을 신뢰하는 사람들은 그들의 삶 속에서 하나님이 모든 선의 근원되심을 잘 알고 “굳건하고” “확고한” 마음을 가질 수 있습니다(7-8절, 새번역).

하나님은 우리에게 은혜로 생명과 용서를 주셨습니다. 우리도 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑과 우리의 물질을 은혜로 나누어줍시다.

GENEROUSLY GIVEN AND SHARED

When my wife, Cari, and I finished our higher education, we had several thousand dollars in debt that we needed to consolidate through a lower interest rate. We applied for a loan at the local bank but were turned down because we hadn’t lived or worked in that city for long. A few days later, I shared what had happened with my friend Ming, who was an elder in our church. “I’d like to mention this to my wife,” he said on the way out the door.

A few hours later, the phone rang. It was Ming: “Ann and I would like to loan you the money you need, interest free,” he offered. I didn’t know what to say, so I responded, “I can’t ask that of you.” “You’re not asking!” Ming answered jovially. They kindly gave us the loan, and Cari and I paid them back as quickly as we could.

I believe Ming and Ann were generous because of their love for God. As Scripture tells us, “Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice” (PSALM 112:5). Those who trust in God can have “steadfast” hearts that “are secure” (VV. 7-8), understanding that He’s the source of everything good in their lives.

God has been generous with us, giving us life and forgiveness. Let’s be generous in sharing His love and our resources with those in need.

허점투성이가 거룩하게

내 딸은 어렸을 때 점심을 먹으며 스위스 치즈를 가지고 장난을 잘 쳤습니다. 네모난 연한 노란색 치즈를 가면처럼 얼굴에 대고 “엄마 여기 좀 봐.”라고 할 때면, 아이의 반짝이는 초록빛 눈이 그 치즈에 뚫린 구멍 두 개를 통해 보이곤 했습니다. 젊은 엄마였던 그 시절, 그 스위스 치즈 가면은 진정 온 마음으로 사랑하려고 노력했지만 너무나도 불완전했던 나의 모습에 대해 여러 느낌을 갖게 해주었습니다. 그것은 거룩함이 아닌 허점투성이의 나의 모습이었습니다.

우리는 하나님을 위해 구별되고 예수님 닮은 거룩한 삶을 살기를 진정 갈망하지만, 날이 갈수록 거룩함과는 점점 더 멀어져가는 것처럼 여겨지고, 거룩이 있어야 할 자리에 “치즈의 구멍들 같은 우리의 허점들”만 둥그러니 남아 있습니다.

디모데후서 1:6-7에서 바울은 믿음의 아들 디모데에게 거룩한 부르심에 따라 살라고 당부합니다. “[하나님이] 우리를 구원하사 거룩하신 소명으로 부르심은 우리의 행위대로 하심이 아니요 오직 자기의 뜻과... 은혜대로 하심이라”(9절)고 사도는 설명합니다. 이런 삶은 우리의 성품이 아닌, 하나님의 은혜로 가능합니다. 바울은 이 은혜는 “영원 전부터 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 주신”(9절) 것이라고 말합니다. 우리도 하나님의 은혜를 받아들여 그 은혜로 말미암은 능력으로 살아갈 수 있지 않을까요?

하나님은 아이 키우는 일이나 결혼생활, 직장, 이웃을 사랑하는 일 등, 어떤 일에서도 우리를 거룩한 삶으로 부르십니다. 그 삶은 완전해지려는 우리의 노력이 아닌, 오직 하나님의 은혜로 가능합니다.

FROM HOLEY TO HOLY

As a child, my daughter loved playing with her Swiss cheese at lunch. She’d place the pastel yellow square on her face like a mask, saying, “Look Mom,” her sparkly green eyes peeking out from two holes in the cheese. As a young mom, that Swisscheese mask summed up my feelings about my efforts—genuinely offered, full of love, but so very imperfect. Holey, not holy.

Oh, how we long to live a holy life—a life set apart for God and characterized by being like Jesus. But day after day, holiness seems out of reach. In its place, our “holeyness” remains.

In 2 Timothy 1:6-7, Paul writes to his protégé Timothy, urging him to live up to his holy calling. The apostle then clarified that “[God] has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace” (V. 9). This life is possible not because of our character, but because of God’s grace. Paul continues, “This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” (V. 9). Can we accept God’s grace and live from the platform of power it provides?

Whether in parenting, marriage, work, or loving our neighbor, God calls us to a holy life—made possible not because of our efforts to be perfect but because of His grace.

피자를 함께 먹으며 받은 은혜

우리 교회 리더인 해롤드와 팸 부부의 저녁 초대를 받고 마음이 따뜻해지면서도 한편으로는 조금 불편했습니다. 얼마 전 내가 성경의 가르침에 배치되는 개념들을 가르치는 대학 성경공부 모임에 가입했기 때문이었습니다. ‘혹 그것 때문에 나를 가르치려 들려는 것은 아닐까?’

피자를 먹으면서 그들은 자기 가족 이야기를 들려주면서 우리 집은 어떤지 물어보았습니다. 그 부부는 내가 학교 과제나 반려견 부치, 내가 좋아했던 남자에 대한 이야기를 할 때 귀를 기울여 들어주었습니다. 그리고 나중에서야내가 참석하고 있는 성경공부 모임이 주의가 필요하다며 그 모임의 가르침이 무엇이 잘못되었는지를 친절하게 설명해주었습니다.

그들 부부가 경고해주는 말을 듣고 나는 그 성경공부에서 제시한 거짓들을 떠나 성경의 진리에 가깝게 다가갈 수 있었습니다. 유다는 그가 보낸 편지에서 거짓 선생들을 강한 어조로 경계하며 “믿음의 도를 위하여 힘써 싸우라” (유다서 1:3)고 신자들에게 권면합니다. 그는 “마지막 때에... 조롱하는 자들이 있으리라... 이 사람들은 분열을 일으키는 자며... 성령이 없는 자니라”(18-19절) 라고 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그러면서 동시에 신자들에게 진리를 양보하지 말고 따뜻하게 이해하는 마음으로 곁을 지켜주면서 그 “의심하는 자들을 긍휼히 여기라”(22절)고 당부합니다.

해롤드와 팸 부부는 내 믿음이 견고하지 않다는 것을 알고 있었지만 나를 판단하기보다는 먼저 우정으로 다가와 주었고, 그런 다음 지혜롭게 이야기해 주었습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 이 부부와 같은 사랑과 인내를 주셔서, 지혜와 따뜻하게 이해하는 마음으로 신앙이 흔들리는 사람들을 대할 수 있게 해 주시기를 바랍니다.

MERCY THROUGH PIZZA

The invitation for dinner from my church leader Harold and his wife, Pam, warmed my heart, but also made me nervous. I’d joined a college Bible study group that taught ideas that contradicted some of the teachings in the Bible. Would they lecture me about that?

Over pizza, they shared about their family and asked about mine. They listened as I talked about homework, my dog Buchi, and the guy I had a crush on. Only later did they gently caution me about the group I was attending and explain what was wrong with its teachings.

Their warning took me away from the lies presented in the Bible study and close to the truths of Scripture. In his letter, Jude uses strong language about false teachers, urging believers to “contend for the faith” (JUDE 1:3). He reminded them that “in the last times there will be scoffers . . . who divide you . . . and do not have the Spirit” (VV. 18-19). However, Jude also calls on believers to “be merciful to those who doubt” (V. 22) by coming alongside them, showing compassion without compromising the truth.

Harold and Pam knew I wasn’t firmly grounded in my faith, but instead of judging me, they first offered their friendship and then their wisdom. May God give us this same love and patience, using wisdom and compassion as we interact with those who have doubts.

말은 우리 마음의 거울

당신은 더러운 말이 튀어나오지 않도록 어떻게 하고 있습니까? 어느 고등학교에서는 “더러운 말 안 하기” 약속을 결의하고, 학생들은 “나는 교내에서 어떤 비속한 말도 하지 않을 것을 엄숙히 약속합니다.” 라고 맹세하였습니다. 이는 고상한 노력이기는 하지만, 예수님은 외부의 규칙이나 맹세로 더러운 말의 악취가 감춰지지 않는다고 하셨습니다.

우리 입에서 나오는 말의 악취를 제거하는 것은 우리의 마음을 새롭게 함으로 시작됩니다. 사람들이 나무가 맺는 열매를 보고 어떤 나무인지를 아는 것처럼(누가복음 6:43-44), 예수님은 우리가 하는 말은 우리 마음이 예수님과 주님의 가르침에 부합하는지를 알려주는 확실한 지표가 된다고 말씀하셨습니다. 사람의 말은 곧 마음의 열매를 나타내는데, “이는 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말하기”(45절) 때문입니다. 주님은 우리가 진심으로 입에서 나오는 말을 바꾸고 싶다면 주님의 도움으로 먼저 우리 마음의 변화에 초점을 맞추어야 한다고 지적하고 계십니다.

겉으로 약속한다고 해서 변화되지 않은 마음에서 나오는 더러운 말을 억누르기는 쉽지 않습니다. 그런 더러운 말을 하지 않으려면 먼저 예수님을 믿고 (고린도전서 12:3) 성령님이 우리 마음을 가득 채우시도록 해야만 합니다(에베소서 5:18). 성령님은 우리 안에서 역사하셔서 우리가 항상 하나님께 감사하고(20 절) 다른 사람들에게 격려와 신앙에 유익한 말을 하도록(4:15,29; 골로새서 4:6) 우리를 감화시키고 도와주십니다.

WORDS REFLECT OUR HEART

How do you eliminate foul language? A high school chose to institute a “no foul language” promise. The students took an oath, saying: “I do solemnly promise not to use profanities of any kind within the walls and properties of [our school].” This was a noble effort, but, according to Jesus, no external rule or pledge can ever cover the odor of foul speech.

Removing the stench of the words that come from our mouths begins with renewing our hearts. Just as people recognize the kind of tree by the fruit it bears (LUKE 6:43-44), Jesus said that our speech is a convincing indicator of whether our hearts are in tune with Him and His ways or not. Fruit stands for a person’s speech, “for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (V. 45). Christ was pointing out that if we really want to change what’s coming out of our mouths, we first have to focus on changing our hearts as He helps us.

External promises are useless to curb the foul language that comes forth from an untransformed heart. We can only eliminate foul speech by first believing in Jesus (1 CORINTHIANS 12:3) and then inviting the Holy Spirit to fill us (EPHESIANS 5:18). He works within us to inspire and help us to continually offer thanks to God (V. 20) and to speak encouraging and edifying words to others (4:15, 29; COLOSSIANS 4:6).

어떤 연장자의 조언

“나는 무엇을 후회하는가?” 뉴욕타임즈 베스트셀러 작가 조지 샌더스는 2013년 시라큐스 대학 졸업식 축사에서 이렇게 질문하며 답했습니다. 여기서 그는 연장자(샌더스)가 살면서 후회한 일 한 두가지를 졸업생들과 나눔으로써 연장자의 예를 보고 연소자(졸업생)가 무언가 배울 수 있도록 그렇게 접근했습니다. 그는 가난이나 끔찍한 직업 같이, 자신이 후회할 것이라고 사람들이 생각할 만한 것들 몇 가지를 나열했습니다. 그러나 샌더스는 실제로 그런 것들을 전혀 후회하지 않는다고 말했습니다. 오히려 그가 후회한 것은 ‘친절하지 못했던 일’, 곧 누군가에게 친절해야만 했던 기회들을 그냥 지나쳐 버린 일이었다고 했습니다.

바울 사도는 에베소 성도들에게 성도의 삶의 모습이 어떠해야 하는가에 대한 질문에 답하는 서신을 써서 보냈습니다. 우리는 특정한 정치적 견해나, 피해야 할 책이나 영화, 특정한 방식의 예배 같은 것들에 대해 성급히 답하고 싶은 충동을 느낍니다. 그러나 바울의 접근 방식은 당대의 문제에만 국한하지 않았습니다. 그는 “더러운 말”(에베소서 4:29)을 입 밖에 내지 말고 악독과 분노와 같은 것들을 버리라고 언급합니다(31절). 그의 “연설”을 결론짓자면, 본질적으로 그는 에베소 성도와 우리 모두에게 “서로 친절하게 하라”(32절) 고 말하고 있습니다. 그렇게 해야 하는 이유는 하나님께서 그리스도 안에서 우리를 친절하게 대하셨기 때문입니다.

예수님 안에서의 삶이 어떨 것이라고 우리가 믿고 있는 것들 중에 확실한 한 가지는 친절하게 행하는 것입니다.

ADVICE FROM ONE OLDER

“What do I regret?” That was the question New York Times best-selling writer George Saunders answered in his 2013 commencement speech at Syracuse University. His approach was that of an older person (Saunders) who shared one or two regrets he’d had in life with the younger people (graduates) who could learn something from his examples. He listed a few things people might assume he regretted, like being poor and working terrible jobs. But Saunders said he really didn’t regret those at all. What he did regret, however, were failures of kindness—those opportunities he had to be kind to someone, and he let them pass.

The apostle Paul wrote to the believers at Ephesus answering this question: What does the Christian life look like? It’s tempting to rush in with our answers, like possessing a particular political view, avoiding certain books or films, worshiping in a particular manner. But Paul’s approach didn’t limit him to contemporary issues. He does mention abstaining from “unwholesome talk” (EPHESIANS 4:29) and ridding ourselves of things like bitterness and anger (V. 31). Then to conclude his “speech,” in essence, he says to the Ephesians as well as to us, “Don’t fail to be kind” (V. 32). And the reason behind that is because in Christ, God has been kind to you.

Of all the things we believe the life in Jesus to be, one of them, surely, is to be kind.

즉석 찬양

에티오피아 단기선교 중 우리 팀은 그 지역의 다른 사역 팀과 함께 말 그대로 폐차장에 있는 판잣집에서 어렵게 살고 있는 젊은 남자들을 찾아갔습니다. 그들을 만나 정말 기뻤습니다! 우리는 서로 간증하고 격려의 말을 해주며 함께 기도했습니다. 그날 저녁 아주 좋았던 순간 중 하나는 현지 사역 팀원 한 명이 기타를 연주하며 환한 달빛 아래서 새로운 친구들과 함께 예배한 것이었습니다. 얼마나 신성한 순간이었는지요! 비록 절박한 상황에 처해 있지만 이 청년들은 예수님 안에서만 찾을 수 있는 희망과 기쁨을 가지고 있었습니다.

사도행전 16장에는 또 다른 즉석 찬양 이야기가 나옵니다. 이 일은 빌립보라는 도시의 감옥에서 일어났습니다. 바울과 실라는 예수님을 섬기다가 체포되어 매맞고 채찍질 당하고 감옥에 갇혀 있었습니다. 그러나 그들은 절망에 빠지지 않고 감방 안에서 “기도하고 찬송하며” 하나님을 예배하였습니다. “이에 갑자기 큰 지진이 나서 옥터가 움직이고 문이 곧 다 열리며 모든 사람의 매인 것이 다 벗어졌습니다”(25-26절).

간수는 처음에 자살하려고 생각했지만 죄수들이 도망치지 않았음을 깨닫고 하나님을 경외하게 되면서 그의 온 가족이 함께 구원받았습니다(27- 34절).

하나님은 우리가 그분을 찬양하는 것을 들으며 기뻐하십니다. 우리가 살면서 형통할 때든지 어려울 때든지 항상 하나님을 예배하도록 합시다.

IMPROMPTU PRAISE

During a short-term missions trip to Ethiopia, our team accompanied another team from a local ministry on an outreach to a group of young men who’d hit hard times and were living in shacks in a literal junkyard. They were such a delight to meet! We shared testimonies, encouraging words, and prayers together. One of my favorite moments that evening was when a local team member played his guitar and we got to worship with our new friends under the radiant moon. What a sacred moment! Despite their desperate situation, these men had hope and joy that can only be found in Jesus.

In Acts 16, we read about another impromptu praise time. This one broke out in a jail in the city of Philippi. Paul and Silas had been arrested, beaten, flogged, and imprisoned while serving Jesus. Instead of giving in to despair, they worshiped God by “praying and singing” in their jail cell. “Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once, all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose” (VV. 25-26).

The jailer’s first thought was to end his life, but when he realized the prisoners hadn’t escaped, he was in awe of God, and salvation came to his family (VV. 27-34).

God delights in hearing us praise Him. Let’s worship Him during both the highs and lows of life.

내 친구 알과 캐시 쉬퍼 부부가 그들이 탔던 상징적인 제2차 세계대전 당시의 비행기를 조종하고 항공쇼에 나타났을 때, 그들에게 가장 의미 있었던 일은 고령의 전쟁 참전용사들의 반응이었습니다. 노병들은 항공쇼에 참가하여 자신들이 참전했던 전쟁과 자신들이 조종했던 비행기에 대해 이야기를 나누곤 했습니다. 그들이 전투 이야기를 할 때면 대부분 눈에 눈물이 글썽거렸습니다. 그들 중 많은 사람들이 조국을 위해 싸우는 동안 들었던 최고의 소식은 “청년들이여, 전쟁은 끝났다. 이제 집에 갈 시간이다.” 라는 말이었다고 했습니다.

이전 세대의 이 이야기는 예수님을 믿는 우리가 당면하고 있는 전쟁, 곧 우리 영혼의 원수인 마귀에 대항하여 싸우는 믿음의 선한 싸움과 관련이 있습니다. 베드로 사도는 우리에게 “너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾는다”고 경고합니다. 마귀는 다양한 방법으로 우리를 유혹하며, 고난과 박해 가운데 우리로 낙심하게 하여 예수님을 믿는 믿음에서 멀어지게 하려고 합니다. 베드로는 먼저는 편지의 독자들에게, 그리고 오늘날 우리에게 “근신하라 깨어라”(베드로전서 5:8)고 도전합니다. 우리는 성령님께 의지함으로 대적과의 싸움에서 굴복하거나 좌절하지 않을 수 있습니다.

WHEN IT’S TIME

When my friends Al and Kathy Schiffer flew their iconic, World War II–era airplane to airshows, it was the reactions of the elderly war veterans that meant the most to them. They would come by so they could talk about the wars they served in and the airplanes they flew. Most of their battle stories were told with tears in their eyes. Many have said that the best news they received while serving their country were the words, “The war is over, boys. It’s time to go home.”

These words from an earlier generation relate to the war believers in Jesus are engaged in—our good fight of faith against the devil, the enemy of our souls. The apostle Peter warned us: “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” He tempts us in various ways and uses discouragement in suffering and persecution to try to draw us away from our faith in Jesus. Peter challenged his first readers and us today to “be alert and of sober mind” (1 PETER 5:8). We depend on the Holy Spirit so we won’t let the enemy cause us to surrender the fight and bring us down.

We know that one day Jesus will return. When He comes, His words will have an effect similar to that felt by wartime soldiers, bringing tears to our eyes and joy to our hearts: “The war is over, children. It’s time to go Home.”

흙 속에 피어난 아름다움

어느 날 저녁, 집 근처 공터에 흙이 여러 줄로 깔끔하게 정리되어 있는 것을 보았습니다. 줄마다 작은 녹색 잎들과 함께 조그만 봉오리들이 얼굴을 내밀고 있었습니다. 다음날 아침, 나는 그 공터에서 돋아난 아름다운 붉은 튤립꽃들을 보고 발걸음을 멈추었습니다.

작년 가을, 한 그룹이 시카고 사우스사이드 구역의 공터에 십만 개의 튤립 구근을 심었습니다. 그들이 빨간 튤립을 선택한 이유는 이 지역 일대를 빨갛게 특정 경계 지역으로 지정함으로써 (은행의 대출 차별 정책) 그것이 이 지역에 많이 사는 소수 민족 주민들에게 어떤 충격을 주었는지를 상징하기 위함이었습니다. 튤립은 그 공터에 지어질 수 있었던 집들을 상징적으로 보여주었습니다.

BEAUTY IN PLACE OF SOIL

One evening, I noticed neat rows of soil in a vacant lot near my home. Each row contained small green leaves with tiny buds peeking out. The next morning, I stopped in my tracks when I saw a patch of beautiful red tulips sprouting in the lot.

The previous fall, a group had planted one hundred thousand bulbs in empty lots throughout the South Side of Chicago. They chose red to symbolize how redlining (lending discrimination by banks) had impacted neighborhoods where primarily minorities lived. The tulips symbolized the houses that could have been in those lots.

God’s people have endured many challenges—from being exiled from their homelands to discrimination like redlining. Yet, we can still find hope. Isaiah reminds Israel during a time of exile that God would not leave them. He’d give them a “crown of beauty” in place of ashes. Even the poor would receive “good news” (61:1). God promised to exchange despairing spirits with a “garment of praise.” All of these images evoke His splendor and would bring joy to the people, who would now be “oaks of righteousness” instead of dejected exiles (V. 3).

Those tulips also show that God can create splendor from dirt and discrimination. I look forward to seeing the tulips each spring, and more importantly renewed hope in my neighborhood and other communities.

하나님이 행하신 일을 말하라

내 대학 친구 빌 토비아스는 여러 해 동안 태평양의 한 섬에서 선교사로 섬겼는데, 돈을 벌려고 고향을 떠났던 한 젊은 남자의 이야기를 들려주었습니다. 그 남자는 한 친구의 인도로 교회에 가게 되었는데, 거기서 예수님의 복음을 듣고 예수 그리스도를 그의 구주로 믿게 되었습니다.

그 젊은이는 “주술에 빠져 있는” 자기 마을 사람들에게 복음을 전하고 싶었습니다. 그래서 그는 그들에게 복음을 전할 선교사를 찾았습니다. 그러나 선교사는 그 젊은이에게 그냥 당신이 “가서 하나님께서 당신에게 어떤 일을 행하셨는지를 말하라”고 했습니다(마가복음 5:19 참조). 그 청년은 그 말대로 그렇게 했습니다. 몇몇 고향 사람들이 예수님을 받아들였는데, 가장 획기적인 일은 마을의 주술사가 그리스도는 “길이요 진리요 생명”(요한복음 14:6)이라는 것을 깨닫게 된 것이었습니다. 그 주술사는 예수님을 믿고 나서 온 마을 사람들에게 예수님에 대해 말했습니다. 한 젊은이의 전도를 시작으로 4년 만에 그 지역에 일곱 개의 교회가 세워졌습니다.

고린도후서에서 바울은 아직 예수님를 모르는 사람들에게 복음을 소개하기 위한 분명한 계획을 제시하고 있는데, 그것은 그 선교사가 예수님을 믿게 된 그 젊은이에게 일러준 것과 같은 방법입니다. 우리는 “하나님이 우리를 통하여 권면하시는 것 같이” 주님을 대표하는 “그리스도의 사신”이 되어야 합니다(5:20). 모든 그리스도인들에게는 예수님이 그들을 “새로운 피조물”로 만들어 하나님과 화목하게 하신 그들만의 고유한 이야기가 있습니다(17-18 절). 하나님이 우리를 위해 행하신 일들을 다른 사람들에게 전하도록 합시다.

TELL THEM WHAT GOD DID

My college friend Bill Tobias has served as a missionary on a Pacific island for many years. He tells the story about a young man who left his hometown to seek his fortune. But a friend took him to church where he heard the good news Jesus offers, and he trusted Christ as his Savior.

The young man wanted to take the gospel to his people who were “steeped in sorcery,” so he looked for a missionary to reach them. But the missionary told him to simply “go tell them what God did for you” (SEE MARK 5:19). And that’s what he did. Several people in his hometown received Jesus, but the biggest breakthrough came when the town’s witch doctor realized that Christ was “the way and the truth and the life” (JOHN 14:6). After he put his faith in Jesus, he told the whole town about Him. Within four years, the witness of one young man had led to the establishment of seven churches in the region.

In 2 Corinthians, Paul sets forth a clear plan for introducing the gospel to those who don’t yet know Christ—and it aligns with what that missionary told the young believer in Jesus. We are to be “Christ’s ambassadors”—His representatives “as though God were making his appeal through us” (5:20). Every believer has a unique story to tell of how Jesus made them “a new creation . . . who reconciled” them to God (VV. 17-18 NASB). Let’s tell others what He’s done for us.
