믿음의 승리

네 살 난 꼬마 캘빈의 정기 건강검진에서 아이의 몸에 예상치 못한 몇 개의 반점이 발견되었습니다. 병원에 있는 동안 아이는 주사를 맞고 주사 맞은 부위에 반창고를 붙였습니다. 집에 와 그 반창고를 떼려 할 때 캘빈은 무서워서 울었습니다. 아버지는 아이를 달래며 말했습니다. “캘빈, 아빠가 너를 절대로 아프게 하지 않을 줄 알지?” 아버지는 아들이 반창고 떼는 것을 무서워하기보다 자신을 더 믿어 주기를 원했습니다.

네 살짜리 아이들만 고통 앞에서 약해지는 것이 아닙니다. 수술이나 사랑하는 사람과의 이별, 정신적 또는 심리적 어려움, 그 외 여러 것들이 우리를 두렵게 하고 한숨짓게 하며, 고통으로 울부짖고 신음하게 합니다.

다윗이 두려움으로 가득했던 순간 중의 하나는 시기심 많은 사울 왕을 피하다가 블레셋 땅으로 도망하게 되었을 때였습니다. 불레셋 사람들이 골리앗을 죽인 자신을 알아보자, 다윗은 자신에게 무슨 일이 생기지 않을까 걱정했습니다(사무엘상 21:10-11 참조). “다윗이... 가드 왕 아기스를 심히 두려워하여”(12절). 그 힘들었던 상황을 되돌아보며 다윗은 이렇게 썼습니다. “내가 두려워하는 날에는 내가 주를 의지하리이다... 내가 하나님을 의지하였은즉 두려워하지 아니하리니”(시편 56:3-4).

삶의 고난이 닥쳐 두려울 때 어떻게 해야 할까요? 우리는 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지를 믿고 의지해야 합니다.

THE TRIUMPH OF FAITH

A routine wellness check for little four-year-old Calvin revealed a few unexpected spots on his body. During the visit, he was given some shots, and the injection site was covered with a bandage. At home, when the time came to remove the small adhesive covering, Calvin whimpered with fear. Seeking to console his son, his father said, “Calvin, you know I’d never do anything to hurt you.” His father wanted his son to trust him more than fearing the removal of the bandage.

Four-year-olds aren’t the only ones who grow faint in the face of discomfort. Surgeries, separation from loved ones, mental or psychological challenges—and more—prompt our fears, sighs, cries, and groans.

One of David’s fear-filled moments was when he found himself in Philistine territory while fleeing a jealous King Saul. When he was recognized, he was anxious about what might happen to him (SEE 1 SAMUEL 21:10-11): “David . . . was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath” (V. 12). Reflecting on this uncomfortable situation, David wrote, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. . . . In God I trust and am not afraid” (PSALM 56:3-4).

What shall we do when life’s discomforts stir up our fears? We can put our trust in our heavenly Father.

기도가 중요하다

“곧 있을 뇌 검사를 위해 기도해 주세요.” “우리 아이들이 교회로 돌아오기를.” “아내를 잃은 데이브에게 위로가 있기를.” 카드 사역 팀은 매주 이런 기도 제목들을 받아 중보기도하고 한 사람 한 사람에게 짧은 손글씨 편지를 보냅니다. 이런 요청들이 쇄도하지만, 우리의 수고는 별 것 아닌 것 같고 눈에 띄지 않는 것처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 그러나 최근 아내를 잃은 데이브에게서 사랑하는 아내의 부고 기사와 함께 동봉된 진심 어린 감사 카드를 받고 나의 생각이 바뀌었습니다. 기도의 중요성을 다시 깨닫게 된 것입니다.

예수님은 우리가 간절히, 자주, 그리고 소망의 믿음을 갖고 기도해야 한다는 본을 보여주셨습니다. 이 세상에 계셨던 시간은 짧았지만, 예수님은 홀로 떨어져서 기도하는 일에 우선순위를 두셨습니다(마가복음 1:35; 6:46; 14:32).

수백 년 전, 유다 왕 히스기야도 이 기도의 교훈을 알았습니다. 자신이 곧 병으로 죽을 것이라는 것을 듣고(열왕기하 20:1) 괴로움과 비통에 빠진 히스기야는 “낯을 벽으로 향하고 여호와께 기도하였습니다”(2절). 하나님은 바로 응답하셔서 히스기야의 병을 고치시고 그의 삶을 15 년 연장시켜 주셨으며, 나라를 적에게서 구해주겠다고 약속하셨습니다(5-6절). 하나님은 히스기야가 선한 삶을 살아서가 아니라, “[그분을] 위하고 또 [그분의] 종 다윗을 위하여” (6절) 기도에 응답하신 것입니다. 우리가 구한 모든 것을 항상 응답 받지는 못해도, 우리는 하나님이 모든 기도에 역사하신다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

PRAYER MATTERS

“Prayers for an upcoming brain scan.” “That my kids would come back to church.” “Comfort for Dave, who lost his wife.” Our card ministry team receives a weekly list of prayer requests like these so we can pray and send each person a handwritten note. The requests are overwhelming, and our efforts can feel small and unnoticed. That changed after I received a heartfelt thank-you card from Dave, the recently bereaved husband, with a copy of his beloved wife’s obituary. I realized anew that prayer matters.

Jesus modeled that we should pray earnestly, often, and with hopeful faith. His time on earth was limited, but He prioritized getting away by Himself to pray (MARK 1:35; 6:46; 14:32).

Hundreds of years earlier, Hezekiah, the king of Judah, learned this lesson too. He was told that an illness would soon take his life (2 KINGS 20:1). In distress and weeping bitterly, Hezekiah “turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord” (V. 2). In this instance, God’s response was immediate. He healed Hezekiah’s sickness, added fifteen years to his life, and promised to rescue the kingdom from an adversary (VV. 5-6). God answered his prayer not because Hezekiah was living a good life, but “for [his] own honor and for the sake of [his] servant David” (V. 6 NLT). We may not always receive what we ask for, but we can be sure that God is working in and through every prayer.

신뢰할 수 있는 창조자

메리 셸리의 소설 프랑켄슈타인에 나오는 “괴물”은 아주 잘 알려진 문학 작품 속의 인물로, 우리의 문화적인 상상력을 사로잡습니다. 그런데 이 소설의 애독자들은 작가가 실제로 그 괴물을 만든 망상에 찬 과학자 빅터 프랑켄슈타인을 진짜 괴물로 그리고 있다는 점을 알게 됩니다. 과학자 빅터는 이 지능을 가진 생명체를 만들어놓고 그 생명체에게 어떤 지침이나 동료애, 행복에의 희망을 주기를 거부하고 있어서 그 생명체는 절망과 분노로 이어지는 몰락이 확실해 보입니다. 그 생명체는 빅터를 마주보고 “나를 지은 당신은 나를 산산이 부수고 승리할 것”이라며 한탄합니다.

성경은 만물의 진정한 창조주이신 하나님은 이와는 얼마나 다른지 보여줍니다. 그분은 자신의 피조물들을 변함없고 지침 없이 끝까지 사랑하십니다. 하나님은 변덕이 아닌 참된 사랑으로 아름답고 “매우 좋은” 세상을 창조하셨습니다(창세기 1:31). 그리고 인류가 하나님에게서 돌아서서 괴물 같은 사탄을 따랐을 때에도 인류를 향한 하나님의 약속과 사랑은 변하지 않았습니다.

예수님이 니고데모에게 설명하신 것처럼, 하나님은 그분의 피조물을 향한 아주 크신 사랑 때문에 세상을 구원하시기 위해 그분의 가장 소중한 “독생자”(요한복음 3:16) 예수님을 기꺼이 보내주셨습니다. 예수님은 “그를 믿는 자마다 영생을 얻게 하려 하시려고”(15절) 자신을 희생하여 우리 죄의 결과를 짊어지셨습니다.

우리에게는 우리의 온 마음과 삶을 다해 신뢰할 수 있는 창조주 하나님이 있습니다.

A CREATOR WE CAN TRUST

The “monster” in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is one of the most widely known literary characters, captivating our cultural imagination. But close readers of the beloved novel know that a strong case can be made that Shelley actually portrays Victor Frankenstein, the delusional scientist who created the creature, as the real monster. After creating an intelligent creature, Victor denies him any guidance, companionship, or hope of happiness— seemingly guaranteeing the creature’s descent into desperation and rage. Confronting Victor, the creature laments, “You, my creator, would tear me to pieces and triumph.”

Scripture reveals how different the true Creator of all things is—with unchanging, tireless love for His creation. God didn’t create on a whim, but out of love created a beautiful, “very good” world (GENESIS 1:31). And even when humanity turned from Him to choose monstrous evil instead, God’s commitment to and love for humanity didn’t change.

As Jesus explained to Nicodemus, God’s love for His creation was so great He was willing to give even what was most dear to Him—“his one and only Son” (JOHN 3:16)—that the world might be saved. Jesus sacrificed Himself, bearing the consequences of our sin, so “that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him” (V. 15).

We have a Creator we can trust with our hearts and lives.

예수님의 권세

나의 아들 제프는 예수님을 만나면서 수 년 간의 약물중독에서 벗어날 수 있었지만 나는 여전히 걱정이 되었습니다. 많은 일들을 함께 겪으면서 나는 가끔 하나님이 그를 위해 예비해 두신 미래보다 아들의 힘들었던 과거가 더 마음에 걸렸습니다. 중독자의 부모들은 누구나 재발을 염려합니다. 그래서 나는 어느 날 가족모임에서 아들을 앉혀 놓고 말했습니다. “우리가 싸워야 할 적은 강한 힘을 가진 상대라는 것을 기억하거라.” 아들이 대답했습니다. “알아요, 아빠. 그런데 힘은 있지만 권세는 없어요.”

그 순간 나는 우리가 주님을 바라볼 때 우리를 죄에서 구원하시고 우리의 삶을 변화시키는 예수님의 비할 수 없는 권세를 떠올렸습니다. 그리고 곧바로 예수님이 하늘에 계신 아버지께로 돌아가시기 전에 제자들에게 하신 말씀을 생각했습니다. “하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 그러므로 너희는 가서...”(마태복음 28:18-19).

십자가에서 죽으시고 부활하신 예수님은 우리의 과거가 어떠하더라도 주님께 나아갈 수 있는 길을 열어 주셨습니다. 주님은 우리의 과거와 미래를 함께 주관하십니다. 주님이 우리와 항상 함께하신다고 약속하셨기 때문에 (20절) 우리는 주님이 그분의 뜻을 이루시며 변함없는 그분의 손길로 우리의 삶을 이끌어 주실 것을 확신할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리에게 비할 수 없이 큰 소망, 너무 좋아서 전하지 않을 수 없는 큰 소망을 주십니다. 사탄과 이 세상이 잠시 힘을 가질 수 있을지는 몰라도 “모든 권세”는 영원히 예수님께 속해 있습니다.

THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS

Even after Jesus had set my son Geoff free from years of substance abuse, I still had worries. We’d been through much together and my focus sometimes remained on his difficult past instead of the future God had for him. Parents of addicts often worry about relapse, and one day at a family gathering, I pulled Geoff aside. “Remember,” I told him, “we have an adversary, and he’s powerful.” “I know, Dad,” he responded. “He has power, but he has no authority.”

In that moment, I was reminded of Jesus’ incomparable authority to rescue us from our sins and transform our lives as we look to Him. Immediately I thought of His words to the disciples shortly before He returned to His Father in heaven: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go . . .” (MATTHEW 28:18-19).

The crucified and risen Jesus has made a way for us to come to Him no matter what our past may be. He holds both our past and our future. Because He’s promised to be with us always (V. 20), we can be assured that He’ll accomplish His purposes and that our lives are in His unfailing hands. Jesus gives us unparalleled hope, a hope so good we can’t keep it to ourselves. The devil and the world may have some power for a little while, but “all authority” belongs to Jesus forever.

하나님보다 더 큰 사랑은 없다

이제 어른이 된 아들 재비어가 유치원에 다닐 때 팔을 크게 벌리며 “엄마, ‘이만큼’ 사랑해요.”라고 말했습니다. 나도 아이보다 긴 팔을 크게 벌리며 “엄마도 널 ‘이만큼’ 사랑해.”라고 말했습니다. 그는 허리에 양손을 얹고 “내가 엄마를 먼저 사랑했어요.”라고 말했습니다. 나는 고개를 저으며 “엄마는 널 뱃속에 있을 때부터 사랑했단다.”라고 했습니다. 재비어는 눈이 커지며 “엄마가 이겼어요.” 했습니다. 나는 “우리 둘 다 이긴 거야. 예수님이 먼저 우리 둘을 사랑하셨기 때문이지.”라고 말했습니다.

재비어가 결혼하여 첫 아이의 출산을 준비하는 동안 나는 그가 자기 아들과 아름다운 추억을 만들어 가며 자기 아들보다 더 많이 사랑하는 아빠가 되기를 기도하고 있습니다. 그런데 한편 나도 할머니가 될 준비를 하면서, 재비어와 그의 아내가 아기를 가졌다고 말한 그 순간부터 그 아기를 얼마나 사랑하고 있는지 나 자신이 놀라고 있습니다.

요한 사도는 우리를 향한 예수님의 사랑 때문에 우리도 예수님과 다른 사람을 사랑할 수 있게 된다고 말했습니다(요한1서 4:19). 예수님이 우리를 사랑하신다는 것을 알 때 우리에게 안정감이 생겨 그와의 인격적인 관계가 더 깊어집니다(15-17절). 우리를 향한 예수님의 사랑이 얼마나 깊은지를 깨달으면서(19절) 예수님을 향한 우리의 사랑도 자랄 수 있고 다른 사람과의 관계에서도 사랑을 표현할 수 있습니다(20절). 예수님은 우리에게 사랑할 수 있는 힘을 주실 뿐만 아니라, 사랑하라고 명하십니다. “우리가 이 계명을 주께 받았나니 하나님을 사랑하는 자는 또한 그 형제를 사랑할지니라”(21절). 누가 더 사랑을 하는지 견주어 보면 하나님이 항상 이기십니다. 우리가 아무리 사랑한다 해도 하나님보다 더 사랑할 수는 없습니다!

CAN’T OUT-LOVE GOD

When my now-grown son, Xavier, was in kindergarten, he stretched his arms wide and said, “I love you this much.” I stretched my longer arms wide and said, “I love you this much.” Planting his fists on his hips, he said, “I loved you first.” I shook my head. “I loved you when God first put you in my womb.” Xavier’s eyes widened. “You win.” “We both win,” I said, “because Jesus loved both of us first.”

As Xavier prepares for the birth of his first child, I’m praying he’ll enjoy trying to out-love his son as they make sweet memories. But as I prepare to be a grandmother, I’m amazed at how much I loved my grandson from the moment Xavier and his wife told us they were expecting a baby.

The apostle John affirmed that Jesus’ love for us gives us the ability to love Him and others (1 JOHN 4:19). Knowing He loves us gives us a sense of security that deepens our personal relationship with Him (VV. 15-17). As we realize the depth of His love for us (V. 19), we can grow in our love for Him and express love in other relationships (V. 20). Not only does Jesus empower us to love, but He also commands us to love: “And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister” (V. 21). 깨어 기도하라

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 영적 전쟁을 할 때 기도를 열심히 해야 합니다. 그러나 플로리다의 한 여성은 열성적인 기도도 지혜롭게 하지 못하면 얼마나 위험할 수 있는지를 경험했습니다. 기도할 때에 눈을 감는 그녀는 운전 중에도 눈을 감고 기도하다가 정지 신호에 서지 못하고 교차로를 지나 찻길을 벗어나서는 남의 집 앞마당으로 돌진했습니다. 그리고 그 집 잔디에서 차를 빼질 못했습니다. 다치지는 않았지만 난폭 운전과 재물 손괴 혐의로 경찰로부터 소환장을 받았습니다. 이 기도의 용사는 에베소서 6장 18 절에서 “깨어 있으라”고 한 중요한 부분을 놓친 것입니다.

바울 사도는 에베소서 6장에서 하나님의 전신갑주를 이야기하면서 마지막에 두 가지를 포함시킵니다. 첫째, 우리는 기도로 영적 전쟁을 싸워야 합니다. 이것은 성령 안에서 주님의 능력을 의지하며 기도하는 것을 의미합니다. 또한 주님의 인도하심 가운데 안식하며 항상 모든 기도와 간구를 하면서 (18절) 주님의 말씀에 반응하는 것입니다. 둘째, 바울은 우리에게 “깨어 있으라” 고 권고했습니다. 영적으로 깨어 있을 때 우리는 예수님의 재림을 준비하고 (마가복음 13:33), 시험을 이기며(14:38), 다른 성도들을 위하여 중보(에베소서 6:18)할 수 있습니다.

우리가 날마다 영적 전쟁을 할 때 “깨어 기도하는 것”이 우리의 삶에 배어들어 악한 세력과 싸우고 그리스도의 빛으로 어두움을 물리칠 수 있게 합시다.

PRAY AND WATCH

When fighting spiritual battles, believers in Jesus should take prayer seriously. A Florida woman found out how dangerous it can be, however, to practice it unwisely. When she prayed, she closed her eyes. But while driving one day and praying (with eyes shut!), she failed to stop at a stop sign, flew through an intersection, and went offroad into a homeowner’s yard. She then tried unsuccessfully to back off the lawn. Though not injured, she was given a police citation for reckless driving and property damage. This prayer warrior missed a key part of Ephesians 6:18: be alert.

As part of the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6, the apostle Paul includes two final pieces. First, we should fight spiritual battles with prayer. This means praying in the Spirit—relying on His power. Also, resting in His guidance and responding to His promptings—praying all kinds of prayers on all occasions (V. 18). Second, Paul encouraged us to “be alert.” Spiritual alertness can aid us in being prepared for Jesus’ return (MARK 13:33), gaining victory over temptation (14:38), and interceding for other believers (EPHESIANS 6:18).

As we fight spiritual battles daily, let’s permeate our lives with a “pray and watch” approach—combating evil powers and piercing the darkness with the light of Christ. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

동행하는 천사

베브는 계속되는 진단 일정으로 힘들고 지쳐갔습니다. 자신의 몸 어딘가에 있는 암을 찾는 중이라는 의사들의 말이 그녀를 놀라게 했습니다. 하나님은 베브가 주님을 찾거나 성경을 읽을 때 함께 하신다는 약속과 지속적인 평화로 하루하루 그녀를 신실하게 격려해 주셨습니다. 베브는 어떻게 될지 몰라 고민이 되어 “만약에”라는 질문으로 자주 하나님께 매달렸습니다. 큰 수술을 앞둔 어느 날 아침, “내가 사자를 네 앞서 보내어 길에서 너를 보호하리라”(20절)고 하는 출애굽기 23장의 한 구절이 성경에서 그녀의 마음속으로 파고들었습니다.

이 말씀은 하나님께서 모세를 통해 이스라엘 백성에게 주신 것입니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 따를 율법을 주시고 그들을 새 땅으로 인도하셨습니다(14-26절). 그러나 그 지침들을 주시던 중간에 하나님은 “길에서 [그들을] 보호하기” 위해 천사를 앞서 보내시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다 (20절). 생사가 달린 베브의 상황과는 달랐지만, 그녀는 성경의 다른 곳에서도 천사의 보호가 언급되었던 것이 생각났습니다. 시편 91편 11 절에서는 “그가 너를 위하여 그의 천사들을 명령하사 네 모든 길에서 너를 지키게 하심이라” 고 말씀하시고, 히브리서 1장 14절에서는 하나님께서 예수님을 믿는 성도들을 섬기기 위해 천사들을 “섬기는 영”으로 보내신다고 말씀하십니다.

그리스도를 아는 사람들에게는 주님께서 천사를 보내어 가까이서 돕게 하십니다.

ANGEL COMPANIONS

As medical test after medical test filled up Bev’s schedule, she grew overwhelmed and weary. Doctors alarmed her when they told her they were looking for cancer somewhere in her body. Each day God faithfully encouraged her with the promises of His presence and an abiding peace when she turned to Him or read the Bible. She battled with the uncertainties and frequently learned to roll the “what ifs” onto God’s shoulders. One morning, Bev came across a verse in Exodus 23 that popped out from the page to her heart before a serious surgery: “I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way” (V. 20).

Those words were spoken by God through Moses to His people, the Israelites. He was giving His laws for His people to follow and leading them to a new land (VV. 14-26). But in the middle of those instructions, He told them He would send an angel ahead of them “to guard [them] along the way” (V. 20). Even though this wasn’t Bev’s life’s situation, she remembered that the care of angels is mentioned elsewhere in Scripture too. Psalm 91:11 says, “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” And Hebrews 1:14 tells us God sends angels as “ministering spirits” to serve believers in Jesus.

If we know Christ, He’s got an angel or angels near us to minister to us as well. - ANNE CETAS

근심의 잡초 뽑기

뒷마당에 있는 화분에 씨앗 몇 개를 심고 나서 어떻게 되나 보려고 기다렸습니다. 10일에서 14일 사이에 싹이 틀 것이라는 설명서를 읽고 흙에 물을 주면서 자주 확인했습니다. 곧 몇 개의 녹색 잎이 흙을 뚫고 나오는 것을 보았습니다. 그러다가 그것이 잡초라는 남편의 말을 듣고 나의 기대는 금방 사라졌습니다. 남편은 내가 키우려는 식물이 질식하지 않도록 잡초들을 빨리 뽑아버리라고 했습니다.

예수님도 우리의 영적 성장을 방해할 수 있는 침입자를 잘 처리하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 말씀하셨습니다. 씨를 뿌리는 자가 씨를 뿌렸을 때, 더러는 “가시떨기 위에 떨어지매... 기운을 막았다”(마태복음 13:7)고 비유를 하셨습니다. 가시떨기나 잡초는 이처럼 식물의 성장을 방해합니다(22절). 또한 근심도 분명히 우리의 영적 성장을 방해합니다. 성경을 읽고 기도하는 것이 우리의 믿음을 성장시키는 좋은 방법이지만, 근심의 가시는 조심해야 한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그것들은 내게 심겨진 좋은 말씀들을 “질식”시켜 부정적인 생각에 사로잡히게 만듭니다.

성경에 나오는 성령의 열매에는 사랑, 희락, 화평과 같은 것이 포함됩니다 (갈라디아서 5:22). 그러나 그 열매를 맺으려면 우리의 주의를 흩뜨리고 하나님 아닌 다른 것에 초점을 맞추게 하는 의심이나 근심의 잡초를 하나님의 능력에 힘입어 뽑아내야 합니다.

PULL THE WEEDS OF WORRY

After burying a few seeds in a planter in my backyard, I waited to see the results. Reading that the seeds would sprout within ten to fourteen days, I checked often as I watered the soil. Soon I saw a few green leaves
pushing their way out of the soil. But my bubble burst quickly when my husband told me those were weeds. He encouraged me to pull them quickly so that they wouldn’t choke the plants I was trying to grow.

Jesus also told of the importance of dealing with intruders that can impede our spiritual growth. He explained a portion of His parable this way: when a sower cast his seeds, some “fell among thorns . . . and choked the plants” (MATTHEW 13:7). Thorns, or weeds, will do just that to plants—stop their growth (V. 22). And worry will surely stunt our spiritual growth. Reading Scripture and praying are great ways to grow our faith, but I’ve found I need to watch out for the thorns of worry. They’ll “choke” the good word that has been planted in me, making me focus on what could go wrong.

The fruit of the Spirit, found in Scripture, includes such things as love, joy, peace (GALATIANS 5:22). But in order for us to bear that fruit, in God’s strength we need to pull any weeds of doubt or worry that may distract us and cause us to focus on anything other than Him. - KATARA PATTON

예수님 안에서 함께 섬기기

미크로네시아의 한 섬에 고립된 세 남자를 돕기 위해 구조대원들이 힘을 모았습니다. 전염병 때문에 서로의 접촉을 제한해야 했기 때문에 팀웍이 필요했습니다. 조난자들을 처음 발견한 조종사는 근처에 있던 호주 해군 함선에 무전을 보냈습니다. 그 함선은 두 대의 헬리콥터에 음식과 물과 의료품을 보냈습니다. 그 다음에는 미국 해안 경비대가 도착해 조난자들의 상태를 점검하고 무전기를 건넸습니다. 마지막으로 미크로네시아 순찰선이 와서 그들을 목적지까지 데려다 주었습니다.

우리는 함께 일할 때 많은 것을 이룰 수 있습니다. 빌립보의 성도들은 바울 사도를 후원하는 일에 힘을 모았습니다. 루디아와 가족들은 바울을 집으로 영접했습니다(사도행전 16:13-15). 글레멘드와, 서로 사이가 좋지 않았던 유오디아와 순두게까지 모두 복음 전파를 위해 사도와 직접 같이 일했습니다(빌립보서 4:2-3). 나중에 바울이 로마에 투옥되었을 때 교회는 필요한 물품을 모아 에바브로디도를 통해 전달했습니다(14-18절). 그리고 무엇보다도 빌립보인들은 그가 사역을 하는 동안 끊임없이 그를 위해 기도했습니다(1:19).

이 초대교회에서 함께 섬겼던 신자들이 보여준 모범은 오늘날 우리에게도 영감을 줍니다. 하나님의 인도하심과 능력을 받아 동료 신자들과 협력하여 기도하며 사람들을 섬기면 우리가 혼자 할 때보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 이루게 됩니다. “혼자서는 하나의 물방울이나, 함께하면 바다가 된다”는 말은 사실입니다.

SERVING TOGETHER IN JESUS

Rescue workers cooperated to help three men stranded on an island in Micronesia. Teamwork was necessary because a widespread health crisis required them to limit their exposure to each other. The pilot who first spotted the castaways radioed a nearby Australian Navy ship. The ship sent two helicopters which provided food, water, and medical care. Later, the US Coast Guard arrived to check on the men and deliver a radio. Finally, a Micronesian patrol boat taxied them to their destination.

We can accomplish a lot when we work together. The Philippian believers pooled their efforts to support the apostle Paul. Lydia and her family welcomed him into their home (ACTS 16:13-15). Clement and even Euodia and Syntyche (who didn’t get along) all worked directly with the apostle to spread the good news (PHILIPPIANS 4:2-3). Later, when Paul was imprisoned in Rome, the church gathered essentials for a care package and delivered it via Epaphroditus (VV. 14-18). Perhaps most importantly, the Philippians prayed for him through- out his ministry (1:19).

The examples of believers serving together in this ancient church can inspire us today. Cooperating with fellow believers to pray and serve others as God leads and empowers us accomplishes much more than we could ever do on our own. It has been said, “Individually, we are one drop. 하나님은 나를 도우시는 분

내친구 랄리는 곧 여든 다섯 번째 생일을 맞이합니다! 35년 전에 그와 처음 대화를 나눈 이후로 그는 늘 나에게 감동을 주었습니다. 얼마 전 그로부터 은퇴 후에 책 한 권의 원고를 마쳤으며, 다른 새로운 사역을 시작했다는 말을 듣고 나는 흥미로웠지만 그리 놀라지는 않았습니다.

성경에 나오는 갈렙도 85세가 되었을 때 일을 그만두려 하지 않았습니다. 하나님을 향한 믿음과 헌신으로 그는 수십 년에 걸친 광야 생활, 그리고 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 약속하신 유업 확보를 위한 전쟁들을 견뎌냈습니다. 갈렙은 “모세가 나를 보내던 날과 같이 오늘도 내가 여전히 강건하니 내 힘이 그 때나 지금이나 같아서 싸움에나 출입에 감당할 수 있나이다”(여호수아 14:11) 라고 말했습니다. 그런데 어떤 방법으로 정복하려는 걸까요? 그는 “여호와께서 나와 함께 하시면 내가 여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 그들을 쫓아내리이다”(12 절)라고 자신했습니다.

나이나 삶의 환경, 상황에 관계없이 하나님은 온 마음으로 주님을 신뢰하는 모든 사람을 도우십니다. 하나님은 우리를 도우시는 구주 예수님 안에 자신을 나타내 보여주셨습니다. 우리는 복음서의 그리스도의 모습을 보면서 하나님에 대한 믿음을 갖게 됩니다. 예수님은 그에게 도움을 구하는 모든 사람에게 하나님의 돌보심과 사랑을 보여주셨습니다. 히브리서 기자도 “주는 나를 돕는 이시니 내가 무서워하지 아니하겠노라”(히브리서 13:6)고 했습니다. 젊은이나 노인, 약한 자나 강한 자, 속박된 자나 자유로운 자, 빠른 자나 느린 자, 누구에게든지 오늘날 주님의 도움을 구하지 못할 이유는 하나도 없습니다.

GOD IS MY HELPER

My friend Raleigh is sprinting toward his eighty-fifth birthday! Since my first conversation with him more than thirty-five years ago, he’s been a source of inspiration. When he recently mentioned that since retiring he’d completed a book manuscript and started another ministry initiative—I was intrigued but not surprised.

At eighty-five, Caleb in the Bible wasn’t ready to stop either. His faith and devotion to God had sustained him through decades of wilderness living and wars to secure the inheritance God had promised Israel. He said, “I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then” (JOSHUA 14:11). By what means would he conquer? Caleb declared that by “the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said” (V. 12).

Regardless of age, stage in life, or circumstances, God will help all who wholeheartedly trust Him. In Jesus, our Savior who helps us, God was made visible. The Gospel books inspire faith in God through what we see in Christ. He demonstrated God’s care and compassion for all who looked to Him for help. As the writer of Hebrews acknowledged, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid” (HEBREWS 13:6). Young or old, weak or strong, bound or free, sprinting or limping—what’s keeping us from asking for His help today? - ARTHUR JACKSON
