우리의 필요를 아시는 하나님

마닐라에서 ‘지프니’(필리핀의 대중교통 수단 중 하나)를 운전하는 랜도는 노점에 서서 커피를 마시고 있었습니다. 코로나 감염병 봉쇄가 풀리자 매일 통근하는 사람들이 돌아왔습니다. 그는 생각했습니다. ‘오늘은 스포츠 행사까지 있으니 손님이 더 많겠네. 그동안 못 번 돈을 이제 벌게 될 거야. 드디어 이제 걱정 안 해도 되겠어.’

이렇게 운전을 시작하려는데 가까운 곳의 벤치에 로니가 앉아있는 것이 보였습니다. 거리를 청소하는 로니는 괴로운 표정을 지으며 무언가 말하려고 하는 것 같았습니다. 그러나 랜도에게 이런 생각이 들었습니다. ‘하지만 일분 일초가 중요해. 승객이 많을수록 돈을 더 버는데 여기서 지체할 수 없어.’ 그러나 그는 로니에게 다가가라고 하시는 하나님의 음성을 들으며 순종했습니다.

예수님은 걱정을 하지 않는 것이 얼마나 어려운지를 잘 아시고(마태복음 6:25-27) 하늘에 계신 아버지께서 우리에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지 정확히 아신다고 말씀하십니다(32절). 우리에게 염려하지 말고 하나님을 믿고 그분이 우리에게 원하시는 일에 열중하라고 일깨워 주십니다(31-33절). 하나님의 뜻을 받아들이고 순종할 때 우리는 “오늘 있다가 내일 아궁이에 던져질 들풀도 입히시는” 하나님 아버지께서 모든 창조물을 돌보시듯 우리를 그의 뜻대로 돌보실 것을 확신할 수 있습니다(30절).

거리의 청소부 로니는 랜도와의 대화 끝에 그리스도를 영접하는 기도를 했습니다. 랜도는 말했습니다. “하나님은 그날 여전히 많은 승객들을 보내주셨어요. 하나님은 내 필요는 하나님께서 채우실 테니 그냥 하나님을 따르기만 하라고 일깨워 주셨어요.”

GOD KNOWS OUR NEEDS

Lando, a jeepney (a form of public transport in the Philippines) driver in Manila, gulped down coffee at a roadside stall. Daily commuters were back again after the Covid-19 lockdowns.
And the sports event today means more passengers, he thought. I’ll get back lost income. Finally, I can stop worrying.

He was about to start driving when he spotted Ronnie on a bench nearby. The street sweeper looked troubled, like he needed to talk. But every minute counts, Lando thought. The more passengers, the more income. I can’t linger. But he sensed that God wanted him to approach Ronnie, so he did.

Jesus understood how difficult it is not to worry (MATTHEW 6:25-27), so He assures us that our heavenly Father knows exactly what we need (V. 32). We’re reminded not to be anxious, but to trust Him and devote ourselves to doing what He wants us to do (VV. 31-33). As we embrace and obey His purposes, we can have confidence that our Father who “clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire” will provide for us according to His will—just as He provides for all creation (V. 30).

Because of Lando’s conversation with Ronnie, the street sweeper eventually prayed to become a believer in Christ. “And God still provided enough passengers that day,” Lando shared. “He reminded me my needs were His concern, mine was simply to follow Him.”

질서의 하나님

세스는 약장에 있는 약들을 모두 찾아서 삼켰습니다. 망가지고 무질서한 가정에서 자란 그의 삶은 엉망이었습니다. 엄마는 아버지가 스스로 목숨을 끊을 때까지 늘 아버지에게 맞으며 살았습니다. 이제 세스도 자신의 인생을 “그냥 끝내고” 싶었습니다. 그런데 문득 ‘내가 죽으면 어디로 가지?’ 하는 생각이 머리를 스쳤습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 세스는 그날 죽지 않았습니다. 그리고 때가 되어 친구와 성경공부를 하고 나서 예수님을 자신의 구주로 영접했습니다. 세스를 하나님께로 이끈 것 중에는 창조물 속에서 아름다움과 질서를 본 것도 있었습니다. 그는 말합니다. “나는... 그냥 아름답기만 한 사물들을 봅니다. 누군가가 이 모든 것을 만든 것이죠.”

창세기 1장에서 우리는 하나님이 실제로 만물을 창조하시는 것을 봅니다. 그리고 “땅이 혼돈”(2절)했지만 하나님은 그 무질서에 질서를 가져다주셨습니다. 그는 “빛과 어두움을 나누시고”(4절), 바다 가운데 땅을 두셨으며(10절), 식물과 생물을 그 “종류대로” 만드셨습니다(11-12, 21, 24-25절). “하늘과 땅을 창조하시고 만물을 제자리에 두신”(이사야 45:18) 하나님은 그리스도께 헌신하는 인생들에게 세스가 찾은 평화와 질서를 계속 가져다주십니다.

인생이 혼란스럽고 어려울 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 “무질서의 하나님이 아니시요 오직 화평의 하나님”(고린도전서 14:33)이심을 찬양합시다. 오늘 하나님께 부르짖어 주님만이 주실 수 있는 아름다움과 질서를 달라고 간구합시다.

THE GOD OF ORDER

Seth took all the medications he could find in the medicine cabinet. Raised in a family filled with brokenness and disorder, his life was a mess. His mom was regularly abused by his father until his dad took his own life. Now Seth wanted to “just end” his own. But then a thought came to mind, Where do I go when I die? By God’s grace, Seth didn’t die that day. And in time, after studying the Bible with a friend, he received Jesus as his Savior. Part of what drew Seth to God was seeing the beauty and order in creation. He said, “I . . . see things that are just beautiful. Someone made all this.”

In Genesis 1, we read of the God who indeed created all things. And although “the earth was complete chaos” (V. 2 NRSV), He brought order out of disorder. He “separated the light from the darkness” (V. 4), placed land amid the seas (V. 10), and made plants and creatures according to their “kinds” (VV. 11-12, 21, 24-25). The One who “created the heavens and earth and put everything in place” (ISAIAH 45:18 NLT) continues to, as Seth discovered, bring peace and order to lives surrendered to Christ.

Life can be chaotic and challenging. Praise God that He’s not “a God of disorder but of peace” (1 CORINTHIANS 14:33). Let’s call out to Him today and ask Him to help us find the beauty and order He alone provides.

하나님의 평화의 대리인들

사회정의에 대해 관심이 많았던 노라는 평화적인 시위에 참여했습니다. 계획한대로 시위는 침묵으로 진행되었습니다. 시위대는 침묵의 힘을 보여주며 시내를 걸었습니다.

그러자 두 대의 버스가 와서 섰습니다. 다른 도시에서 선동가들이 도착한 것입니다. 곧 이어 폭동이 일어났습니다. 노라는 실망하여 그 자리를 떠났습니다. 그들의 좋은 의도가 의미를 잃은 것 같았습니다.

바울 사도가 예루살렘 성전에 갔을 때 그를 반대하던 사람들이 그를 보았습니다. “아시아로부터”(사도행전 21:27) 온 그들은 예수님이 그들의 삶의 방식을 위협한다고 여겼습니다. 그들은 바울에 대해 거짓 소문을 퍼트리며 곧 소동을 일으켰습니다(28-29절). 그들은 무리를 지어 바울을 성전에서 끌어내리고 때렸습니다. 그러자 병사들이 달려왔습니다.

바울은 체포를 당하면서 무리에게 할 말이 있다고 천부장에게 요청했습니다(37-38절). 허락을 받은 바울이 그들의 언어로 말을 하니 무리가 놀라 주목했습니다(40절). 이런 식으로 바울은 폭동을 반전시켜 죽은 종교로부터 구원받은 자신의 이야기를 전하는 기회로 삼았습니다(22:2-21).

어떤 이들은 폭력과 분열을 좋아합니다. 그러나 낙담하지 마십시오. 그들은 이기지 못합니다. 하나님은 절망적인 세상에 그의 빛과 평화를 용기 있게 전할 믿는 사람들을 찾고 계십니다. 위기로 보이는 것이 하나님의 사랑을 누군가에게 보여줄 기회가 될 수 있습니다.

GOD’S AGENTS OF PEACE

Nora went to the peaceful protest because she felt strongly about the issue of justice. As planned, the demonstration was silent. The protestors walked in powerful quietness through the downtown area.

Then two buses pulled up. Agitators had arrived from out of town. A riot soon broke out. Heartbroken, Nora left. It seemed their good intentions were fruitless.

When the apostle Paul visited the temple at Jerusalem, people who opposed Paul saw him there. They were “from the province of Asia” (ACTS 21:27) and viewed Jesus as a threat to their way of life. Shouting lies and rumors about Paul, they quickly stirred up trouble (VV. 28-29). A mob dragged Paul from the temple and beat him. Soldiers came running.

As he was being arrested, Paul asked the Roman commander if he could address the crowd (VV. 37-38). When permission was granted, he spoke to the crowd in their own language, surprising them and seizing their attention (V. 40). And just like that, Paul had turned a riot into an opportunity to share his story of rescue from dead religion (22:2-21).

Some people love violence and division. Don’t lose heart. They will not win. God is looking for courageous believers to share His light and peace with our desperate world. What seems like a crisis might be your opportunity to show someone God’s love.

노래하는 푸른 초장

나는 개들과 대화하는 듯 보이는 시어머니와 가끔 그 능력에 대해 즐겁게 농담을 나누곤 합니다. 시어머니는 개들이 짖으면 사랑하는 마음으로 알아듣고 대답해줍니다. 시어머니를 비롯한 세상 모든 개 주인들은 누구나 개들의 웃는 소리라면 귀 기울여 듣고 싶을 것입니다. 과학자들은 개, 소, 여우, 물개, 앵무새와 같은 많은 동물들이 “놀이로 내는 소리”, 곧 웃음소리를 갖고 있다는 것을 발견했습니다. 이들이 내는 소리를 식별할 수 있다면 사람들이 볼 때 싸우는 것 같아도 어떤 경우엔 장난치는 것임을 알 수 있습니다.

동물들이 웃음과 기쁨을 표현하는 것을 보면, 세상의 다른 피조물들이 그들만의 방식으로 하나님을 찬양하는 모습이 어떨지 기분 좋게 유추해볼 수 있습니다. 자기의 주변을 둘러보던 다윗 왕의 눈에는 “작은 산들이 기쁨으로 띠를 띠었고” 초장과 골짜기는 “즐거이 외치고” 있었습니다(시편 65:12-13). 다윗은 하나님이 땅을 보살피시고 풍요롭게 하셔서 아름다움과 양식을 공급하신다는 것을 알았습니다.

우리 주변의 모든 것이 문자 그대로 “노래하는” 것은 아니지만, 그들 모두는 하나님의 창조의 산물임을 증거하며 우리에게 소리 내어 주님을 찬양하자고 부릅니다. “온 땅”에 속한 우리도 “주의 놀라우심을 경외하며” “기쁨의 노래”로 화답하기를 바랍니다(8절). 하나님은 그것을 다 들으시며 아신다는 것을 우리는 믿을 수 있습니다.

SINGING MEADOWS

I’ve often affectionately joked with my mother-in-law about her ability to talk to her dogs. She responds to their barks with loving understanding. Perhaps now she and dog owners everywhere will also listen for their canine pals to laugh. Scientists have discovered that many animals, including dogs, cows, foxes, seals, and parakeets, all have “vocal play signals”—otherwise known as laughter. Identifying these accompanying sounds helps distinguish an animal’s play behaviors from what might otherwise look like fighting to a human observer.

That animals express laughter and joy gives us a delightful glimmer of what it might look like for other parts of creation to praise God in their own way. As King David looked over his surroundings, it seemed to him “the hills [were] clothed with gladness” and the meadows and valleys were “[shouting] for joy” (PSALM 65:12-13). David recognized that God had cared for and enriched the land, providing both beauty and sustenance.

Even though our physical surroundings don’t “sing” in a literal way, they bear witness to God’s active work in His creation and, in turn, invite us to give praise to Him with our voices. May
we—as part of the “whole earth”—be “filled with awe at [His] wonders” and respond to Him with “songs of joy” (V. 8). We can trust that He’ll hear and understand them.

볼 수 있는 눈

제너비브는 선천성 백내장을 갖고 태어난 세 자녀에게 앞을 보는 “눈” 이 되어 주어야 했습니다. 서아프리카의 베냉 공화국에 살던 그녀는 아이들을 마을에 데리고 가야 할 때면 막내는 등에 업고, 두 아이의 손을 꼭 잡고 주위에 위험이 없는지를 늘 살피며 가야 했습니다. 앞을 못 보는 것을 마법의 저주로 여기는 문화에서 제너비브는 간절하게 하나님께 도와 달라고 부르짖었습니다.

어느 날 그 엄마는 같은 마을에 사는 한 남자로부터 가난한 사람들에게 희망과 치유를 베푸신 예수님의 뜻을 따라 설립되어 꼭 필요한 수술을 해주는 선교단체 “자비선”(Mercy Ships)을 소개받고 별 기대 없이 그곳을 찾아갔습니다. 수술을 받고 깨어난 아이들은 놀랍게도 앞을 볼 수 있었습니다!

하나님의 이야기는 언제나 어둠 속에 있는 사람들에게 다가가 주님의 빛을 밝히는 내용입니다. 이사야 선지자는 하나님이 “이방의 빛”이 되실 것이라고 선포했습니다(이사야 42:6). 하나님은 “눈먼 자들의 눈을 밝히며”(7절), 육체의 시력뿐 아니라 영적인 눈도 회복시켜 주실 것입니다. 그리고 자기 백성의 손을 “잡아 주신다”고 약속하셨습니다(6절). 하나님은 눈먼 자를 보게 하셨고 어둠 속에 사는 사람들에게 빛을 비추어 주셨습니다.

만약 어둠에 갇혀 있다고 느껴진다면 사랑의 하나님 아버지의 약속을 받아들여 그의 빛을 비추어 주시기를 간구하며 소망을 붙드시기를 바랍니다.

EYES TO SEE

Genevieve had to be the “eyes” for her three children, each born with congenital cataracts. Whenever she took them into their village in the Republic of Benin of western Africa, she strapped the baby onto her back and held on to the arm and hand of her older two, always looking for danger. In a culture where blindness was thought to be caused by witchcraft, Genevieve despaired and cried out to God for help.

Then a man from her village told her about Mercy Ships, a ministry that provides vital surgeries to honor Jesus’ model of bringing hope and healing to the poor. Uncertain if they could help, she approached them. When the children woke up after their surgeries, they could see!

God’s story has always been about coming alongside those shrouded in darkness and bringing His light. The prophet Isaiah declared that God would be “a light for the Gentiles” (ISAIAH 42:6). He would “open eyes that are blind” (V. 7), restoring not only physical sight but spiritual vision as well. And He promised to “take hold” of His people’s hand (V. 6). He restored sight to the blind and brought light to those living in the darkness.

If you feel overcome by darkness, cling to hope as you embrace the promises of our loving Father while asking for His light to bring illumination.

그리스도로 옷 입기

안경을 새로 맞춰 신이 났던 나는 몇 시간도 되지 않아 벗어버리고 싶어졌습니다. 달라진 안경 도수에 적응하느라 눈도 아프고 두통이 생겼기 때문입니다. 안경테가 익숙하지 않아 귀도 아팠습니다. 다음 날이 되어 안경을 또 써야 한다는 생각에 괴로웠습니다. 내 몸이 안경에 적응하도록 잊지 않고 매일 안경을 써야 했습니다. 그렇게 몇 주가 지났습니다. 이제는 안경을 쓰고 있는지도 모르고 지내게 되었습니다.

무언가 새로운 것을 착용하려면 적응이 필요하지만 시간이 흐르면서 익숙해져 잘 맞게 됩니다. 그리고 전에 보지 못했던 것을 보게 될 수도 있습니다. 로마서 13장에서 바울 사도는 그리스도를 따르는 자들에게 “빛의 갑옷을 입고”(12절) 바른 삶을 살라고 당부했습니다. 그들은 이미 예수님을 믿기는 했어도 “졸음”에 빠진 듯 현실에 안주하는 모습이었습니다. 그들은 “일어나” 움직이고, 단정히 행하며, 모든 죄를 멀리 해야 했습니다(11-13절). 바울은 사람들에게 예수님으로 옷 입고 생각과 행동에서 주님을 닮아가라고 권면했습니다(14절).

우리는 예수님과 같은 사랑과 온유와 친절과 은혜와 믿음을 하루 만에 보여줄 수는 없습니다. 이것은 불편하여 내키지 않더라도 매일같이 “빛의 갑옷을 입는” 선택을 해 나가야 하는 긴 과정입니다. 그러면 시간이 흐르면서 예수님이 우리를 더 나은 쪽으로 변화시켜 주십니다.

CLOTHED IN CHRIST

I was so excited to put on my new glasses for the first time, but after just a few hours I wanted to throw them away. My eyes ached and head throbbed from adjusting to the new prescription. My ears were sore from the unfamiliar frames. The next day I groaned when I remembered I had to wear them. I had to repeatedly choose to use my glasses each day in order for my body to adjust. It took several weeks, but after that, I hardly noticed I was wearing them.

Putting on something new requires an adjustment, but over time we grow into it, and it suits us better. We may even see things we didn’t see before. In Romans 13, the apostle Paul instructed Christ followers to “put on the armor of light” (V. 12) and practice right living. They had already believed in Jesus, but it seems they had fallen into “slumber” and become more complacent; they needed to “wake up” and take action, behave decently and let go of all sin (VV. 11-13). Paul encouraged them to be clothed with Jesus and become more like Him in their thoughts and deeds (V. 14).

We don’t begin to reflect the loving, gentle, kind, grace-filled, and faithful ways of Jesus overnight. It’s a long process of choosing to “put on the armor of light” every day, even when we don’t want to because it’s uncomfortable. Over time, He changes us for the better.

2022년 월드컵 결승전에서 프랑스와 아르헨티나가 만났을 때 많은 사람들은 이를 두고 “역사상 최고의 월드컵 경기”였다고 할 만큼 놀라운 경기였습니다. 추가 시간이 다 지나고 점수가 3대3으로 종료되면서 승패는 승부차기로 결정짓게 되었습니다. 결국 아르헨티나가 골을 넣어 승리하자 아르헨티나 온 국민이 환호했습니다. 백만 명 이상의 아르헨티나 사람들이 부에노스아이레스 시내를 가득 메웠습니다. 드론으로 촬영된 이 열광적이고 기쁨에 찬 장면은 소셜 미디어를 통해 퍼졌습니다. BBC 방송은 도시 전체가 “기쁨의 폭발”로 진동했다고 보도했습니다.

기쁨은 언제나 멋진 선물입니다. 그렇지만 잠언은 어떻게 해야 한 도시나 개인이 더 깊고 지속적인 기쁨을 누릴 수 있는지를 설명합니다. 잠언은 “의인이 형통하면 성읍이 즐거워한다”(11:10)고 말합니다. 하나님의 창조 목적대로 살아가는 사람들이 자기가 사는 사회에 영향을 주는 것은 하나님의 공의가 이루어지고 있다는 좋은 소식입니다. 탐욕이 줄어들고, 가난한 사람들이 도움을 받으며, 압제 받는 자들이 보호를 받습니다. 하나님의 올바른 삶의 방식이 널리 퍼질 때에는 언제나 기쁨과 “축복”이 임합니다(11절).

우리가 진정으로 하나님의 방식대로 살아간다면 그 결과는 모든 사람에게 좋은 소식으로 나타날 것입니다. 우리가 사는 방식으로 우리 사회는 더 나아지고 온전하게 변할 것입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 세상을 치유하는 그분의 사역에 참여하라고 하십니다. 그리고 세상에 기쁨을 전하는 일에도 우리를 부르고 계십니다.

JOY IN THE CITY

When France and Argentina met in the 2022 World Cup final, it was an incredible contest that many dubbed the “greatest World Cup match in history.” As the final seconds ticked off in extra time, the score was tied 3-3, sending the soccer teams to penalty kicks. After Argentina made the winning goal, the nation erupted in celebration. More than a million Argentineans overwhelmed downtown Buenos Aires. Drone footage spread across social media showing this raucous, happy scene. One BBC report described how the city quaked with “an explosion of joy.”

Joy is always a wonderful gift. Proverbs, though, describes how a city, a people, can experience joy that goes even deeper and lasts far longer. “When the righteous prosper,” Proverbs says, “the city rejoices” (11:10). When those who truly live by God’s designs for humanity begin to influence a community, then this signals good news because it means God’s justice is taking hold. Greed diminishes. The poor find support. The oppressed are protected. Whenever God’s right way of living flourishes, then there’s joy and “blessing” in the city (V. 11).

If we’re genuinely living out God’s ways, then the result will be good news for everyone. The way we live will make the community around us better and more whole. God invites us to be part of His work to heal the world. He invites us to bring joy to the city.

감사할 것 다섯 가지

연구에 따르면 자기가 가진 것에 의도적으로 감사하는 사람은 잠을 더 잘 자고, 병치레를 덜하며, 더 행복하다고 합니다. 참으로 인상적인 혜택들입니다. 심리학자들은 삶의 만족도를 높이려면 “감사 일기”를 쓰면서 한 주에 감사한 것 다섯 개를 적어보라고 합니다.

성경은 감사하며 사는 삶에 대해 계속 말하고 있습니다. 일용할 양식과 결혼 생활(디모데전서 4:3-5)로부터 피조물의 아름다움(시편 104)에 이르기까지, 성경은 이 모든 것을 선물로 여기며 그것들을 주신 이에게 감사하라고 합니다. 시편 107편은 이스라엘이 특히 감사해야 할 다섯 가지를 열거합니다. 광야에서 건져주신 것(4-9절), 포로에서 해방된 것(10-16절), 질병에서 치유된 것(18-22절), 바다에서 지켜주신 것(23-32절), 그리고 메마른 땅에서 번성케 하신 것(33-42 절)입니다. 시편은 이 모든 것이 하나님의 “한결같은 사랑”(현대인의 성경)의 증표이니 “여호와께 감사하라”고 계속 말합니다(8, 15, 21, 31절).

FIVE GOOD THINGS

According to research, people who are intentionally grateful for what they have report better sleep, fewer symptoms of illness, and more happiness. Those are impressive benefits. Psychologists even suggest keeping a “gratitude journal” to improve our well-being, writing down five things we’re grateful for each week.

Scripture has long promoted the practice of gratitude. From meals and marriage (1 TIMOTHY 4:3-5) to the beauties of creation (PSALM 104), the Bible has called us to see such things as gifts and to thank the Giver for them. Psalm 107 lists five things Israel could be especially grateful for: their rescue from the desert (VV. 4-9), their release from captivity (VV. 10-16), healing from disease (VV. 18-22), safety at sea (VV. 23-32), and their flourishing in a barren land (VV. 33-42). “Give thanks to the Lord,” the psalm repeats, for these are all signs of God’s “unfailing love” (VV. 8, 15, 21, 31).

Do you have a notepad handy? Why not write down five good things you’re grateful for now? It might be the meal you just enjoyed, your marriage or, like Israel, God’s rescue points in your life to date. Give thanks for the birds singing outside, the smells from your kitchen, the comfort of your chair, the murmurs of loved ones. Each is a gift and a sign of God’s unfailing love. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

그리스도 안에서 새 사람

우리 집 소나무에서 솔방울과 솔잎이 떨어지기 시작했습니다. 나무 의사는 그 모습을 한번 보더니 이렇게 말했습니다. “소나무가 원래 그렇습니다.” 좀 더 자세한 설명이나 해결책을 원하는 나에게 그 의사는 그냥 어깨를 으쓱하며 “소나무는 원래 그런 거예요.”라고 거듭 말했습니다. 자연 법칙에 따라 솔잎이 떨어진 것입니다. 이는 불변의 법칙입니다.

감사하게도 우리의 영적인 삶은 우리의 바뀌지 않는 행동이나 태도에 제한받지 않습니다. 바울은 에베소의 새 성도들에게 우리를 자유케 하는 이 진리를 강조하여 말했습니다. 이방인들은 “총명이 어두워졌으며” 그들의 마음은 하나님께 닫혀 있었습니다. 그들의 마음은 “모든 더러운 것”으로 굳어져 있었고 방탕과 탐욕만을 일삼았습니다(에베소서 4:18-19).

바울 사도는 “너희가 참으로 예수에 대해서 듣고” 그의 진리를 알았으니 이제 “썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리라”(22절) 고 기록했습니다. 바울은 우리의 옛 사람이 “유혹의 욕심에 따라 썩어졌음” 을 지적하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라”(22-24절).

OUR NEW NATURE IN CHRIST

Our blue spruce was dropping pinecones and needles. The tree doctor took one look at it and explained the problem. “It’s just being a spruce,” he said. I’d hoped for a better explanation. Or a remedy. But the tree man shrugged, saying again, “It’s just being a spruce.” By nature, the tree sheds needles. It can’t change.

Thankfully, our spiritual lives aren’t limited by unchangeable actions or attitudes. Paul stressed this liberating truth to the new believers at Ephesus. The gentiles were “darkened in their under- standing,” he said, their minds closed to God. They possessed hardened hearts containing “every kind of impurity,” and sought only after pleasures and greed (EPHESIANS 4:18-19).

But “since you have heard about Jesus” and His truth, the apostle wrote, “throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life” (V. 22 NLT). Paul noted how our old nature “is corrupted by lust and deception.” He said, “Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy” (VV. 22-24 NLT).

Then he listed new ways to live. Stop lying. Resist anger. Stop cursing. Quit stealing. “Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need” (V. 28 NLT). Our new self in Christ allows us to live a life worthy of our calling, yielded to our Savior’s way. - PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님의 임재

힘들게 살고 있던 모니크는 주변에 예수 믿는 친구들이 삶의 문제들을 해결하는 방식을 존중하고 그들을 부러워하기까지 하면서도, 자신도 그들처럼 살 수 있다는 생각은 하지 못했습니다. 그리스도를 믿는 것을 여러 가지 규칙을 잘 지키며 사는 것으로 생각했던 것입니다. 어느 날 한 대학 친구가 모니크에게 하나님은 그녀의 인생을 망치려는 것이 아니라 삶의 우여곡절 가운데 최선을 주고 싶어하신다고 말해 주었습니다. 이 사실을 알고 난 후 모니크는 예수님을 구주로 믿고 하나님께서 자기를 사랑하신다는 놀라운 진리를 받아들였습니다.

솔로몬 왕이 옆에 있었다면 모니크에게 비슷한 충고를 해주었을 것입니다. 솔로몬 왕도 이 세상에는 시련이 있다고 했습니다. “만사가 다 때가 있나니” (전도서 3:1), “울 때가 있고... 춤출 때가 있다”(4절)고 기록했습니다. 하지만 그것이 끝이 아닙니다. 하나님은 “사람들에게 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨습니다”(11절). 여기서 영원이란 하나님의 임재 안에 거하는 것을 말합니다.

모니크는 예수님을 믿고 나서 예수님 말씀처럼 “풍성한 삶”을 얻었습니다 (요한복음 10:10). 그것만이 아니었습니다! 믿음으로 그녀의 “영원을 사모하는 마음”(전도서 3:11)은 훗날 삶의 모든 수고가 잊혀지고(이사야 65:17) 하나님의 영광스러운 임재가 영원한 현실로 다가올 그날을 약속으로 받게 되었습니다.

GOD’S PRESENCE

Monique was struggling. She had friends who were believers in Jesus, and she respected how they handled life’s struggles. She was even a bit jealous of them. But Monique didn’t think she could live the way they did; she thought having faith in Christ was about following rules. Finally, a fellow college student helped her see that God wasn’t out to spoil her life; instead, He wanted the best for her amidst her ups and downs. Once she understood this, Monique was ready to trust Jesus as her Savior and embrace the magnificent truth about God’s love for her.

King Solomon could have given Monique similar advice. He acknowledged that this world does have its sorrows. Indeed, there’s a “time for everything” (ECCLESIASTES 3:1)—“a time to mourn and a time to dance” (V. 4). But there’s more. God “has also set eternity in the human heart” (V. 11). An eternity meant to be lived in His presence.

Monique gained life “to the full,” as Jesus said (JOHN 10:10), when she trusted Him. But she gained so much more! Through faith, the “eternity in [her] heart” (ECCLESIASTES 3:11) became the promise of a future when life’s struggles will be forgotten (ISAIAH 65:17) and God’s glorious presence will be an eternal reality. - DAVE BRANON
