하나님의 품 안에서

다섯 살 난 사라는 드릴 소리를 듣고 잔뜩 겁을 먹었습니다. 아이는 치과 의자에서 뛰쳐나와 다시는 앉지 않으려고 했습니다. 치과의사는 이해한다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕이며 아이 아빠에게 “아빠가 의자에 앉아 주세요.”라고 말했습니다. 아빠 제이슨은 의자에 앉아 있는 것이 얼마나 쉬운 일인지를 딸에게 보여주라는 뜻으로 생각했습니다. 하지만 그때 치과의사는 아이를 돌아보며 말했습니다. “자, 올라가 아빠 무릎에 앉으세요.” 아빠 품에 안긴 아이는 완전히 긴장이 풀렸고 의사는 치료를 계속할 수 있었습니다.

그날 제이슨은 하나님 아버지의 임재가 주는 위로에 대해 큰 교훈을 얻고 이렇게 말했습니다. “때로 하나님은 우리가 스스로 헤쳐 나가야 할 일이라면 우리 대신 해주지 않는 쪽을 택하십니다. 그 대신 하나님은 ‘내 옆에 계시는 분’임을 보여주십니다.”

시편 91편은 시련을 마주할 힘을 주시는 하나님의 함께 하시는 위로와 능력에 대해 말합니다. 하나님이 그분을 사랑하는 사람들에게 주시는 약속처럼, 우리가 그의 강한 팔 안에서 쉴 수 있다는 사실을 알면 큰 위로가 됩니다. “그가 내게 간구하리니 내가 그에게 응답하리라 그들이 환난 당할 때에 내가 그와 함께 하여 그를 건지고 영화롭게 하리라”(15절).

인생에는 피할 수 없는 많은 도전과 시련이 있고, 우리는 어쩔 수 없이 아픔과 고난을 겪으며 살아야 합니다. 그러나 하나님이 우리를 든든한 두 팔로 안아 주실 때 위기와 역경을 견딜 수 있고, 하나님은 그 과정을 통해 우리의 믿음을 키워주실 것입니다.

IN GOD’S ARMS

The sound of the drill terrified five-year-old Sarah. She leaped out of the dentist’s chair and refused to get back in. Nodding understandingly, the dentist told her father, “Daddy, get into the chair.” Jason thought he was meant to show his daughter how easy it was. But then the dentist turned to the little girl and said, “Now, climb up and sit in Daddy’s lap.” With her father now cradling her in his reassuring arms, Sarah relaxed completely, and the dentist was able to continue.

That day, Jason learned a great lesson about the comfort of the presence of his heavenly Father. “Sometimes, God [chooses not to] take over what we have to go through,” he said. “But God was showing me, ‘I will be there with you.’ ”

Psalm 91 speaks of the comforting presence and power of God that gives us the strength to face our trials. Knowing that we can rest in His powerful arms gives us great assurance, as does His promise to those who love Him: “He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble” (V. 15).

There are many unavoidable challenges and trials in life, and we will inevitably have to go through pain and suffering. But with God’s reassuring arms wrapped around us, we’ll be able to bear our crises and circumstances, and let Him strengthen our faith as we grow through them. - LESLIE KOH

하나님, 들립니다!

엄마 무릎 위에 안긴 아기 그레이엄에게 의사가 생후 처음으로 보청기를 삽입하는 동안 아기는 몹시 버둥거렸습니다. 의사가 보청기를 켜는 순간 그레이엄은 울음을 뚝 그쳤습니다. 아이의 눈이 휘둥그레지고는 활짝 웃었습니다. 아이는 자기를 달래주고 다독이면서 자기 이름을 부르는 엄마의 목소리를 처음으로 ‘들을 수’ 있었습니다.

아기 그레이엄은 엄마의 목소리를 들었지만 그것이 엄마 목소리인지, 그 뜻이 무엇인지 배우려면 도움이 필요합니다. 예수님이 우리를 가르치시는 방법도 이와 비슷합니다. 그리스도를 구주로 받아들이는 순간 우리는 예수님이 잘 아시고 친히 인도하시는 양이 됩니다(요한복음 10:3). 예수님의 음성을 듣고 따를 때 우리는 그를 점점 더 잘 믿고 순종하게 됩니다(4절).

구약에서 하나님은 선지자를 통해 말씀하셨습니다. 신약에서는 육신을 입고 오신 하나님이신 예수님께서 사람들에게 직접 말씀하셨습니다. 오늘날 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 성령의 능력을 힘입어 그의 영감으로 기록된 말씀을 이해하고 순종할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 성경말씀과 그의 백성들을 통해 우리에게 말씀하시고, 우리는 기도를 통해 직접 그분과 소통할 수 있습니다. 우리는 언제나 성경말씀과 부합하는 하나님의 음성을 인식할 때, “하나님, 들립니다!”라고 외치며 감사 찬양을 부를 수 있습니다.

I HEAR YOU, GOD!

Baby Graham fussed and wiggled as his mother held him in her lap while the doctors inserted his first hearing aid. Moments after the doctor turned on the device, Graham stopped crying. His eyes widened. He grinned. He could hear his mother’s voice comforting him, encouraging him, and calling his name.

Baby Graham heard his mother speaking, but he needed help learning how to recognize her voice and understand the meaning of her words. Jesus invites people into a similar learning process. Once we accept Christ as our Savior, we become the sheep He knows intimately and guides personally (JOHN 10:3). We can grow to trust and obey Him as we practice hearing and heeding His voice (V. 4).

In the Old Testament, God spoke through the prophets. In the New Testament, Jesus—God in the flesh—spoke directly to people. Today, believers in Jesus have access to the power of the Holy Spirit, who helps us understand and obey God’s words which He inspired and preserved in the Bible. We can communicate directly with Jesus through our prayers as He speaks to us through Scripture and through His people. As we come to recognize God’s voice, which is always in alignment with His words in the Bible, we can cry out with grateful praise, “I hear You, God!” - XOCHITL DIXON

시편 72편의 지도자들

2022년 7월 영국 총리는 청렴성에 문제가 있다는 여론 때문에 사퇴해야 했습니다. (그리고 후임 총리도 불과 몇 달 후에 사임을 했습니다!) 이 일의 발단은 보건부 장관이 의회에서의 연례 조찬 기도회에 참석했다가 공직자로서의 청렴성에 자책감을 느끼고 사임한 데서 비롯되었습니다. 다른 장관들까지 사임하기에 이르자 총리는 자신도 떠나야 한다고 느꼈던 것입니다. 한 평온한 기도 모임에서 시작된 놀라운 일이었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 성도들은 그들의 정치 지도자들을 위해 기도해야 합니다 (디모데전서 2:1-2). 지도자의 역할을 명시하고 그들의 성취를 기원하는 기도문인 시편 72편은 이를 위한 좋은 지침서입니다. 이상적인 지도자는 공정하고 정직하며(1-2절), 연약한 자를 보호하고(4절), 궁핍한 자를 섬기며(12-13절), 압제에 맞서는(14절) 사람이라고 설명합니다. 그들은 “땅을 적시는 소나기” (6절)와 같이 생명을 일으키며 땅에 번영을 가져옵니다(3, 7, 16절). 이보다 더 훌륭한 리더의 모습이 어디 있으며, 그리고 메시아가 아니면 이 역할을 온전히 해낼 분이 누가 있을까요(11절)?

PSALM 72 LEADERS

In July 2022, Britain’s prime minister was forced to step down after what many felt were lapses in integrity (the newly appointed prime minister stepped down just months later!). The event was triggered when the country’s health minister attended an annual parliamentary prayer breakfast, felt convicted about the need for integrity in public life, and resigned. When other ministers resigned too, the prime minister realized he had to leave. It was a remarkable moment, originating from a peaceful prayer meeting.

Believers in Jesus are called to pray for their political leaders (1 TIMOTHY 2:1-2), and Psalm 72 is a good guide for doing so, being both a ruler’s job description and a prayer to help them achieve it. It describes the ideal leader as a person of justice and integrity (VV. 1-2), who defends the vulnerable (V. 4), serves the needy (VV. 12-13), and stands against oppression (V. 14). Their time in office is so refreshing, it’s like “showers watering the earth” (V. 6), bringing prosperity to the land (VV. 3, 7, 16). While only the Messiah can perfectly fulfill such a role (V. 11), what better standard of leadership could be aimed for?

The health of a country is governed by the integrity of its office-bearers. Let’s seek “Psalm 72 leaders” for our nations and help them to embody the qualities found in this psalm by praying it for them. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

예수님 안에서 함께 모이기

삶의 어려운 환경으로 오랫동안 정서적으로 영적으로 아파하고 힘들어 하면서 나는 교회에 출석하는 것을 그만둘 수도 있었습니다. (가끔은 ‘가서 뭐해?’ 라는 생각도 들었습니다.) 그러나 나에게 는 주일은 꼭 지켜야 한다는 의무감이 있었습니다.

오랫동안 형편은 나아지지 않았지만, 그럼에도 다른 성도들과 함께 예배와 기도 모임과 성경공부를 같이 하면서 계속 인내하며 희망을 가질 수 있도록 격려를 받았습니다. 설교와 성경공부를 통해 힘을 주는 메시지를 얻었고, 사람들은 나를 위로하며 내 말을 들어주고 안아 주었습니다. 정말 나에게 필요했던 것들이었습니다.

히브리서 기자는 “모이기를 폐하는 어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 하지 말고 오직 권하라”(히브리서 10:25)고 기록했습니다. 그는 고난과 어려움 앞에서는 서로가 서로의 위로를 필요로 한다는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 이 성경 저자는 우리에게 “믿는 도리의 소망을 움직이지 말며 굳게 잡고”, “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하라”고 권면하는 것입니다(23-24절). 이런 것은 격려의 큰 부분을 차지합니다. 하나님이 우리로 계속 모이도록 인도하시는 것도 바로 그 때문입니다. 누군가는 우리의 사랑의 격려가 필요할 수도 있고, 우리 또한 되돌려 받는 것으로 인해 놀라움을 경험할 수도 있습니다.

MEETING TOGETHER IN JESUS

When I went through an extended period of emotional and spiritual pain and struggle due to difficult circumstances in my life, it would have been easy for me to withdraw from church. (And sometimes I did wonder, Why bother?) But I felt compelled to keep attending each Sunday.

Although my situation remained the same for many long years, worshiping and gathering with other believers in services, prayer meetings, and Bible study supplied the encouragement I needed to persevere and remain hopeful. And often I’d not only hear an uplifting message or teaching, but I’d receive comfort, a listening ear, or a hug I needed from others.

The author of Hebrews wrote, “[Don’t give] up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but [encourage] one another” (HEBREWS 10:25). This author knew that when we face hardships and difficulties, we’ll need the reassurance of others—and that others would need ours. So this Scripture writer reminded readers to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess” and to consider how to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (VV. 23-24). That’s a big part of what encouragement is. That’s why God leads us to keep meeting together. Someone may need your loving encouragement, and you may be surprised by what you receive in return. - ALYSON KIEDA

JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN TODAY!

Before Charles Simeon attended university in Cambridge, England, he loved horses and clothes, spending a huge sum on his attire yearly. But because his college required him to attend regular Communion services, he started to explore what he believed. After reading books written by believers in Jesus, he experienced a dramatic conversion on Easter Sunday. Awaking early on April 4, 1779, he cried out, “Jesus Christ is risen today! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” As he grew in his faith in God, he devoted himself to Bible study, prayer, and attending chapel services.

On the first Easter, life changed for the two women who arrived at Jesus’ tomb. There they witnessed a violent earthquake as an angel rolled back the stone. He said to them, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said” (MATTHEW 28:5–6). Overjoyed, the women worshiped Jesus and ran back to tell their friends the good news.

Encountering the risen Christ isn’t something reserved for ancient times—He promises to meet us here and now. We might experience a dramatic encounter, such as the women at the tomb or as Charles Simeon did, but we might not. In whatever way Jesus reveals Himself to us, we can trust that He loves us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

그리스도의 수난은 종려주일 예수님의 승리의 입성과 배신, 조롱, 채찍질과 십자가에 못 박히는 것까지, 예수님이 겪으신 가장 큰 고통의 시기를 말합니다. 이것들은 4복음서 모두에서 볼 수 있습니다.

이사야 53장에는 주님의 고난과 그 결과가 예언되어 있습니다. “그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다”(5절). 우리는 모두 “양 같아서 각기 제 길로 갔거늘”(6절) 예수님의 십자가 죽음과 부활로 말미암아 우리는 하나님과 화평할 수 있습니다. 주님의 고난은 우리에게 하나님과 함께 할 수 있는 길을 열어주셨습니다.

THE PASSION OF CHRIST

Before Jim Caviezel played Jesus in the film The Passion of the Christ, director Mel Gibson warned that the role would be extremely difficult and could negatively impact his career in Hollywood. Caviezel took on the role anyway, saying, “I think we have to make it, even if it is difficult.”

During the filming, Caviezel was struck by lightning, lost fortyfive pounds, and was accidentally whipped during the flogging scene. Afterwards, he stated, “I didn’t want people to see me. I just wanted them to see Jesus. Conversions will happen through that.” The film deeply affected Caviezel and others on the set, and only God knows how many of the millions who watched it experienced changed lives.

The passion of Christ refers to the time of Jesus’ greatest suffering, from His triumphal entry on Palm Sunday and including His betrayal, mocking, flogging, and crucifixion. Accounts are found in all four gospels.

In Isaiah 53, His suffering and its outcome are foretold: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (V. 5). All of us, “like sheep, have gone astray” (V. 6). But because of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, we can have peace with God. His suffering opened the way for us to be with Him. - ALYSON KIEDA

우리의 대속자 예수님

친구들과 도로에서 경주하며 운전하던 20세의 부유한 청년이 행인을 치어 죽게 했습니다. 그 청년은 이 일로 3년 형을 선고받았지만, 어떤 이들은 법정에 선 사람(그리고 후에 형무소에서 복역한 사람)이 범죄를 저지른 청년이 고용한 대리인이라고 믿고 있습니다. 이런 식으로 죄를 짓고도 형벌을 피하려고 대리인을 고용하는 일들이 일부 국가에서 벌어지고 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

이런 일은 매우 충격적이고 말도 안 되는 일 같이 들리지만, 지금부터 2 천여 년 전 예수님도 우리의 대속자가 되셔서 “단번에 [우리의] 죄를 위하여 죽으사 의인으로서 불의한 자를 대신하셨습니다”(베드로전서 3:18). 하나님께 드리는 죄 없는 희생제물로서 예수님은 주님을 믿는 모든 사람들을 위해 고통받으시고 단번에 그 몸을 드리셨습니다(히브리서 10:10). 주님은 십자가에서 자신의 몸으로 우리의 모든 죄값을 치르셨습니다. 오늘날 돈을 벌기 위해 범죄자를 대신하는 사람과는 달리, 그리스도의 십자가에서의 대속적인 죽음은 우리에게 “희망”을 제공해 주었습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 우리를 위하여 아무 조건 없이 기꺼이 생명을 주셨기 때문입니다(베드로전서 3:15, 18; 요한복음 10:15). 예수님은 우리와 하나님 사이에 놓인 깊은 수렁을 이어주기 위해 그렇게 하셨습니다.

JESUS, OUR SUBSTITUTE

A wealthy twenty-year-old was drag-racing with his friends when he struck and killed a pedestrian. Although the young man received a three-year prison sentence, some believe that the man who appeared in court (and who subsequently served a prison sentence) was a hired surrogate for the driver who committed the crime. This type of thing has been known to occur in some countries where people hire body doubles to avoid paying
for their crimes.

This may sound scandalous and outrageous, but more than two thousand years ago, Jesus became our substitute and “suffered once for [our] sins, the righteous for the unrighteous” (1 PETER 3:18). As God’s sinless sacrifice, Christ suffered and died once and for all (HEBREWS 10:10), for all who believe in Him. He took the penalty for all our sins in His own body on the cross. Unlike a person today who chooses to be a substitute for a criminal to get some cash, Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross provided “hope” for us as He freely, willingly gave His life for us (1 PETER 3:15, 18; JOHN 10:15). He did so to bridge the chasm between us and God.

May we rejoice and find comfort and confidence in this pro-found truth: Only by the substitutionary death of Jesus can we—sinners in need—have a relationship with and complete spiritual access to our loving God. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

사랑하라는 새 계명

영국 왕실은 13세기까지 거슬러 올라가는 전통에 따라 성 금요일 전날인 세족 목요일에 어려운 사람들에게 선물을 나누어줍니다. 이 관습은 ‘몬디(maundy)’라는 단어의 뜻에 근거를 두고 있는데, 그 단어는 “명령”을 의미하는 라틴어 ‘만다툼(mandatum)’에서 유래되었습니다. 이 전통을 통해 예수님이 돌아가시기 전날 밤 제자들에게 주신 새 계명, “서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(요한복음 13:34) 고 하신 명령을 기념하는 것입니다.

예수님은 제자들의 발을 씻어 주심으로 종의 역할을 감당한 지도자셨습니다 (5절). 그러고 나서 주님은 제자들에게도 똑같이 할 것을 요구하셨습니다. “내가 너희에게 행한 것 같이 너희도 행하게 하려 하여 본을 보였노라”(15절). 그리고 더 큰 희생의 행위로 십자가에 달려 돌아가셨습니다(19:30). 예수님은 우리가 온전한 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 자비와 사랑으로 자신을 내어주셨습니다.

어려운 사람들을 섬기는 영국 왕실의 전통은 예수님의 훌륭한 본보기를 따르는 상징으로 계속 이어지고 있습니다. 우리가 특권층으로 태어나지 않았을 지는 몰라도 예수님을 믿으면 그분의 가족이 됩니다. 그리고 우리도 예수님의 새 계명을 따라 삶으로써 우리의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 우리 안에 계셔서 우리를 변화시키시는 성령님께 의지할 때, 우리는 다른 사람들에게 다가가 그들을 배려하고 인정하며 은혜를 베풀 수 있습니다.

A NEW COMMAND TO LOVE

In a tradition starting as early as the thirteenth century, members of the royal family in the United Kingdom give gifts to people in need on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. The practice is rooted in the meaning of the word maundy, which comes from the Latin mandatum, “command.” The command being commemorated is the new one that Jesus gave to His friends on the night before He died: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (JOHN 13:34).

Jesus was a leader who took on the role of a servant as He washed His friends’ feet (V. 5). He then called them to do the same: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (V. 15). And in an even greater act of sacrifice, He lay down His life, dying on the cross (19:30). Out of mercy and love, He gave Himself that we might enjoy the fullness of life.

The tradition of the British royal family serving people in need continues as a symbol of following Jesus’ great example. We may not have been born into a place of privilege, but when we place our faith in Jesus, we become members of His family. And we too can show our love by living out His new command. As we depend on God’s Spirit to change us from within, we can reach out to others with care, affirmation, and grace. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

그리스도 안에서 열매 맺는 믿음의 사람들

신디는 비영리 회사인 새 직장에서 일하게 되어 마음이 설렜습니다. 변화를 가져올 아주 좋은 기회였던 것입니다! 그러나 신디는 곧 동료들은 자신이 품은 열의를 갖고 있지 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 회사가 사명으로 추구하는 것을 조롱하고 자신들의 낮은 성과를 변명하면서 더 많은 급여를 주는 다른 직장을 찾고 있었습니다. 결국 신디는 이 직장에 지원하지 말았어야 했다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 멀리서 대단해 보였던 것이 가까이 보니 실망스러웠던 것입니다.

오늘의 성경말씀에 언급된 무화과나무를 보며 예수님도 똑같은 문제를 느끼셨습니다(마가복음 11:13). 아직 때가 일렀지만 무화과 나무의 잎사귀를 보면 이른 무화과가 열렸을 수도 있어 보였습니다. 그러나 아니었습니다. 잎사귀는 많이 났지만 아직 열매는 맺히지 않았던 것입니다. 실망하신 예수님은 나무에 저주를 내렸습니다. “이제부터 영원토록 사람이 네게서 열매를 따 먹지 못하리라”(14절). 다음 날 아침 그 나무는 뿌리째 말라 있었습니다(20절).

40일 동안 금식하셨던 적이 있는 예수님은 음식 없이 지내는 법을 알고 계셨습니다. 무화과나무를 저주하신 것은 예수님의 배고픔과는 상관이 없었습니다. 예수님은 무화과나무를 통해 구체적인 교훈을 주신 것입니다. 그 나무는 종교의 겉치레만 있고 핵심을 잃어버린 이스라엘을 상징합니다. 그들은 자신들의 메시아이신 하나님의 아들을 죽이려 하고 있었습니다. 도대체 얼마나 이보다 더 척박해질 수 있을까요?

우리가 멀리서 볼 때는 괜찮아 보일 수 있겠지만 예수님은 가까이 오셔서 오직 성령으로만 맺을 수 있는 열매를 찾으십니다. 우리의 열매가 꼭 대단한 어떤 것일 필요는 없지만, 어려운 시기에 나누는 사랑과 희락, 화평과 같이 지극히 초자연적인 것이어야 합니다(갈라디아서 5:22). 성령님께 의지함으로 우리는 그때 예수님을 위한 열매도 맺을 수 있습니다.

FRUITFUL BELIEVERS IN CHRIST

Cindy was excited for her new job in a nonprofit company. What an opportunity to make a difference! She soon discovered her coworkers didn’t share her enthusiasm. They mocked the company’s mission and made excuses for their poor performance as they looked elsewhere for more lucrative positions. Cindy wished she’d never applied for this job. What looked great from afar was disappointing up close.

This was Jesus’ problem with the fig tree mentioned in today’s story (MARK 11:13). It was early in the season, yet the tree’s leaves signaled it might have early figs. Nope. The tree had sprouted leaves, but it hadn’t yet produced fruit. Disappointed, Jesus cursed the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again” (V. 14). By the next morning the tree had entirely withered (V. 20).

Christ once fasted forty days, so He knew how to go without food. Cursing the fig tree was not about His appetite. It was an object lesson. The tree represented Israel, which had the trappings of true religion but had lost the point. They were about to kill their Messiah, the Son of God. How more barren could they be?

We may look good from afar, but Jesus comes near, looking for fruit that only His Spirit can produce. Our fruit need not be spectacular. But it must be supernatural, such as love, joy, and peace in hard times (GALATIANS 5:22). Relying on the Spirit, we can bear fruit even then for Jesus. - MIKE WITTMER

수십 년 동안 맥도날드는 쿼터(1/4) 파운더 버거로 패스트푸드 시장을 지배했습니다. 1980년대에 에이 앤드 더블유라는 라이벌 회사가 노란 아치 로고의 맥도날드를 패스트푸드 왕좌에서 끌어내리기 위한 아이디어로 맥도날드의 쿼터 파운더보다 더 큰 1/3 파운드 버거를 같은 가격으로 판매하기 시작했습니다. 게다가 에이 앤드 더블유 버거는 눈을 가리고 맛을 평가하는 시식 테스트에서도 여러 번 이 겼습니다. 그러나 그 신상품 버거는 실패했습니다. 아무도 사먹지 않았던 것입니다. 결국 그들은 그 버거를 메뉴에서 빼버렸습니다. 연구 결과 소비자들이 산술적으로 착각하여 1/3 파운드 버거가 쿼터 파운더(1/4 파운드) 버거보다 작다고 생각했기 때문으로 드러났습니다. 이 획기적인 아이디어는 소비자들이 기본을 놓쳤기 때문에 실패하고 말았습니다.

예수님도 우리가 얼마나 쉽게 기본을 놓치는 지에 대해 경고하셨습니다. 예수님이 십자가에 못박히셨던 그 주간에 예수님을 함정에 빠트려 백성들의 믿음을 떨어뜨리려는 음모를 꾸미고 있던 종교지도자들은 일곱 번이나 남편을 잃은 여인에 관한 이상한 가상적 상황을 들이대며 예수님께 물었습니다 (마태복음 22:23-28). 예수님은 이 복잡한 딜레마가 전혀 문제가 아닌 듯 반응하셨습니다. 오히려 그들의 문제는 그들이 “성경도, 하나님의 능력도 알지” 못한다는 것이었습니다(29절). 예수님은 성경은 논리적이거나 철학적인 문제들에 답하기 위해서가 아니라, 그 주 목적이 우리로 예수님을 알고 사랑하여 주님을 통해 “영생을 얻도록” 이끌기 위함이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 5:39). 종교지도자들은 이 기본을 놓친 것입니다.

우리 또한 종종 이 기본을 놓치곤 합니다. 성경의 주된 목적은 살아 계신 예수님과의 만남입니다. 이 기본을 놓친다는 것은 정말 가슴 아픈 일입니다.

MISSING THE BASICS

For decades, McDonald’s ruled fast food with their Quarter Pounder burger. In the 1980s, a rival chain cooked up an idea to dethrone the company with the golden arches. A&W offered the Third Pound Burger—larger than McDonald’s—and sold it for the same price. Even more, A&W’s burger won numerous blind taste tests. But the burger bombed. Nobody bought it. Eventually, they dropped it from the menu. Research revealed that consumers misunderstood the math and thought the Third Pound Burger was smaller than the Quarter Pounder. A grand idea failed because people missed the basics.

Jesus warned of how easy it is to miss the basics. Religious leaders, scheming to trap and discredit Him during the week He was crucified, posed a strange, hypothetical scenario about a woman who was widowed seven times (MATTHEW 22:23–28). Jesus responded, insisting that this knotty dilemma wasn’t a problem at all. Rather, their problem was how they didn’t “know the Scriptures or the power of God” (V. 29). The Scriptures, Jesus
insisted, aren’t first intended to answer logical or philosophical puzzles. Rather, their primary aim is to lead us to know and love Jesus and to “have eternal life” in Him (JOHN 5:39). These are the basics the leaders missed.

We often miss the basics too. The Bible’s main aim is an encounter with the living Jesus. It would be heartbreaking to miss it. - WINN COLLIER
