영원한 유산

캔자스 주 하이어워사의 주민 백만장자 존 밀번 데이비스는 대공황 시기 더스트 보울이라는 모래 폭풍이 미국을 황폐화시킬 무렵 자신의 이름을 널리 알려야겠다고 마음먹었습니다. 자수성가형 부자인 그는 자녀가 없었기 때문에 자선사업을 하거나 경제 개발에 투자할 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 그 대신 그는 막대한 비용을 들여 자신과 죽은 아내의 실물 크기 동상 11개를 지역 묘지에 세우도록 의뢰했습니다.

데이비스는 신문기자 어니 파일에게 “캔자스 사람들은 나를 싫어합니다.” 라고 말했습니다. 지역 주민들은 그가 병원이나 수영장, 또는 공원과 같은 공공시설 건설에 기부하기를 원했지만, 그는 “내 돈이니 내가 원하는 대로 씁니다.”라고 말할 뿐이었습니다.

당시의 가장 부유한 사람이었던 솔로몬 왕은 이렇게 썼습니다. “돈을 사랑하는 자가 그 돈으로 만족을 얻지 못하고... 재산이 늘면 그만큼 소비도 많아진다”(전도서 5:10-11, 현대인의 성경). 솔로몬은 재물이 부패하는 경향을 깊이 인식해 가고 있었습니다.

바울 사도 역시 재물의 유혹을 깨닫고 예수님을 순종하는데 자신의 삶을 바치기로 결정했습니다. 그는 로마 감옥에서 처형을 기다리면서 승리에 찬 모습으로 이렇게 썼습니다. “전제와 같이 내가 벌써 부어지고... 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니”(디모데후서 4:6-7).

자기 이름을 돌에 새기는 것이나 우리 자신을 위해 재화를 비축하는 것이 오래 남는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 오히려 어떻게 사랑하는지 보여주시는 주님과, 서로 서로를 위해 사랑으로 나누어 주는 것입니다.

ETERNAL LEGACY

As Dust Bowl sandstorms ravaged the United States during the Great Depression, John Millburn Davis, a resident of Hiawatha, Kansas, decided to make a name for himself. A self-made millionaire with no children, Davis might have invested in charity or economic development. Instead, at great expense, he commissioned eleven life-size statues of himself and his deceased wife to stand in the local cemetery.

“They hate me in Kansas,” Davis told journalist Ernie Pyle. Local residents wanted him to fund the construction of public facilities like a hospital, swimming pool, or park. Yet all he said was, “It’s my money and I spend it the way I please.”

King Solomon, the wealthiest man of his day, wrote, “Whoever loves money never has enough,” and “as goods increase, so do those who consume them” (ECCLESIASTES 5:10–11). Solomon had grown keenly aware of the corrupting tendencies of wealth.

The apostle Paul also understood the temptation of wealth and chose to invest his life in obedience to Jesus. Awaiting execution in a Roman prison, he wrote triumphantly, “I am already being poured out like a drink offering . . . . I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 TIMOTHY 4:6–7).

What lasts isn’t what we chisel in stone or hoard for ourselves. It’s what we give out of love for each other and for Him—the One who shows us how to love. - TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님만이 채워 주실 수 있다

왕새우, 샤와르마(중동식 샌드위치), 샐러드, 그 외 다른 요리 등, 천 달러어치의 음식이 어느 집주인에게 배달되었습니다. 하지만 그 집주인은 파티를 열지 않았고, 실제로 이 파티 음식을 주문하지도 않았습니다. 여섯 살 난 그의 아들이 한 일이었습니다. 어떻게 이런 일이 일어났을까요? 아버지는 아들이 잠자리에 들기 전에 자신의 휴대폰을 가지고 놀게 했는데, 아이가 아빠 휴대폰으로 여러 식당에 값비싼 음식을 주문했던 것입니다. “너 왜 그랬니?” 아버지는 이불 밑에 숨어 있는 아들에게 물었습니다. 여섯 살 난 아이는 “배가 고파서요.”라고 대답했습니다. 아이의 식욕과 미숙함이 값비싼 결과를 가져온 것입니다.

에서는 그의 식욕 때문에 천 달러보다 훨씬 많은 비용을 지불했습니다. 창세기 25장을 보면, 에서는 몹시 지치고 너무 배가 고파 동생 야곱에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 피곤하니 그 붉은 것을 내가 먹게 하라”(30절). 그러자 야곱은 에서의 장자의 명분을 자기에게 팔라고 했습니다(31절). 장자의 명분에는 맏아들로서의 에서의 특별한 지위와 하나님의 축복의 약속들, 두 배의 재산 상속, 그리고 가족의 영적 지도자가 되는 특권 등이 포함되어 있었습니다. 식욕을 이기지 못한 에서는 “먹고 마시고... 맏아들의 권리를 가볍게 여겼습니다”(34절, 새번역).

유혹을 느끼고 무언가가 욕심날 때, 우리의 식욕이 우리를 값비싼 실수와죄로 이끌게 내버려두지 말고 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께 손을 내밀도록 합시다. 오직 그분 만이 주린 영혼에게 “좋은 것으로” 채워주십니다(시편 107:9).

GOD ALONE CAN SATISFY

A thousand dollars of food—jumbo shrimp, shawarma, salads, and more—was delivered to a homeowner. But the man wasn’t having a party. In fact, he didn’t order the smorgasbord; his six-year-old son did. How did this happen? The father let his son play with his phone before bedtime, and the boy used it to purchase the expensive bounty from several restaurants. “Why did you do this?” the father asked his son, who was hiding under his comforter. The six-year-old replied, “I was hungry.” The boy’s appetite and immaturity led to a costly outcome.

Esau’s appetite cost him a lot more than a thousand dollars. The story in Genesis 25 finds him exhausted and desperate for food. He said to his brother, “Let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (V. 30). Jacob responded by asking for Esau’s birthright (V. 31). The birthright included Esau’s special place as the firstborn son, the blessing of God’s promises, a double portion of the inheritance, and the privilege of being the spiritual leader of the family. Giving in to his appetite, Esau “ate and drank” and “despised his birthright” (V. 34).

When we’re tempted and desire something, instead of letting our appetites lead us to costly mistakes and sin, let’s reach out to our heavenly Father—the One who alone satisfies the hungry soul “with good things” (PSALM 107:9). - MARVIN WILLIAMS

고통 중에 외침

지진으로 무너진 2층 잔해에 갇힌 시리아의 다섯 살 난 소녀 지난은 남동생을 주변의 잔해로부터 보호하면서 구조를 요청했습니다. 지난은 “여기서 꺼내 주세요. 뭐든지 할게요.”라고 애타게 외쳤습니다. “종이라도 될게요.”

“내가 고통 중에 여호와께 부르짖었다”(118:5)와 같이, 고통 중에 부르짖는 모습은 시편 전반에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 지진으로 무너진 건물의 엄청난 무게는 평생 경험 못할지 몰라도, 우리 모두는 받아들이기 힘든 진단 결과나 경제적 어려움, 미래에 대한 불안, 또는 인간관계의 단절 등으로부터 오는 숨막히는 두려움은 잘 압니다.

그런 순간 우리는 하나님께 구해 달라고 하면서 협상을 제안할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 도와달라고 설득해야 할 필요가 없는 분이십니다. 하나님은 응답하겠다고 약속하시고, 그것이 우리의 상황을 해결하는 것은 아니더라도 하나님은 우리와 함께 하시고 우리 편이 되어 주실 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 죽음뿐 아니라 다른 어떤 위험도 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 우리도 시편 기자처럼 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. “여호와께서 내 편이 되사 나를 돕는 자들 중에 계시니 그러므로 나를 미워하는 자들에게 보응하시는 것을 내가 보리로다”(7절).

CRIES OF DISTRESS

Trapped under two floors of collapsed rubble caused by an earthquake, five-year-old Jinan, a Syrian girl, called out to rescuers as she shielded her little brother from the debris surrounding them. “Get me out of here; I’ll do anything for you,” she called heartbreakingly. “I’ll be your servant.”

Cries of distress are found throughout the Psalms: “When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord” (118:5). While we may never experience the crushing weight of earthquake-collapsed buildings, we all recognize the suffocating fears from a challenging medical diagnosis, economic hardship, uncertainty about the future, or relational loss.

In those moments we may offer bargains to God for deliverance. But God doesn’t need to be persuaded to help. He promises to answer, and while it may not be relief from our situation, He’ll be with us and on our side. Nor do we need to fear any other peril—including death. We can say with the psalmist, “The Lord is with me; he is my helper. I look in triumph on my enemies” (V. 7).

We’re not promised as dramatic a rescue as Jinan and her brother experienced, but we can trust our faithful God, who brought the psalmist “into a spacious place” (V. 5). He knows our situation and He’ll never abandon us, even in death. - MATT LUCAS

20세기가 동틀 무렵, 메리 맥도웰은 시카고의 잔혹한 도축장과는 동떨어진 세상에서 살고 있었습니다. 그녀가 살던 집은 도축장과 불과 20마일(약 32킬로미터) 밖에 떨어져 있지 않았지만, 도축장의 노동자들이 파업을 하게 된 열악한 노동 조건에 대해서는 거의 아무것도 몰랐습니다. 노동자들과 그 가족들이 접한 어려움을 알고 난 후 맥도웰은 그들을 위한 더 나은 노동 조건들을 지지하며 그들에게로 가서 그들과 함께 생활했습니다. 그녀는 그들의 필요를 감당해 주면서 작은 가게 뒤에 있는 학교에서 아이들을 가르치기도 했습니다.

자신이 직접 영향을 받은 것은 아니었지만 다른 사람들의 더 나은 조건을 위해 나섰던 에스더가 한 일도 이와 비슷합니다. 페르시아의 왕비였던 에스더는 (에스더 2:17) 포로로 잡혀와 페르시아 전역에 흩어져 있는 동족 이스라엘 백성들이 갖지 못한 특권을 누리고 있었습니다. 그러나 에스더는 페르시아에 있는 이스라엘 백성들의 일을 짊어지고 그들을 위해 목숨까지 무릅쓰면서 “규례를 어기고 왕에게 나아가리니 죽으면 죽으리이다”(4:16)라고 말했습니다. 에스더는 남편인 왕이 자신이 유대인인 것을 몰랐기 때문에 그냥 가만히 있을 수도 있었습니다(2:10). 그러나 도움을 구하는 친척들의 간청을 무시하지 않기로 한 에스더는 용감하게 나서서 유대인들을 멸하려는 악한 음모를 밝히 드러냈습니다.

COURAGE IN CHRIST

Near the dawn of the twentieth century, Mary McDowell lived worlds apart from the brutal stockyards of Chicago. Although her home was just twenty miles away, she knew little about the horrific labor conditions that prompted workers in the stockyards to strike. Once she learned of the difficulties faced by them and their families, McDowell moved in and lived among them—advocating for better conditions. She ministered to their needs, including teaching children at a school in the back of a small shop.

Standing up for better conditions for others—even when not directly impacted—is something Esther did as well. She was the queen of Persia (ESTHER 2:17) and had a different set of privileges than her Israelite people who’d been dispersed throughout Persia as exiles. Yet Esther took up the cause of the Israelites in Persia and risked her life for them, saying, “I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish” (4:16). She could have remained silent, for her husband, the king, didn’t know she was Jewish (2:10). But, choosing not to ignore her relatives’ pleas for help, she worked courageously to reveal an evil plot to destroy the Jews.

We may not be able to take on massive causes like Mary McDowell or Queen Esther, but may we choose to see the needs of others and use what God has provided to help them. - KATARA PATTON

창조주를 기억하라

최근에 본인이 말기 암 환자라는 사실을 인정하지 못하는 어떤 여자에 대한 소설을 읽었습니다. 견디다 못한 니콜라의 친구들이 현실을 직시하라고 강요하자 그제야 그토록 피하려 한 이유가 드러납니다. 니콜라는 친구들에게 “나는 인생을 헛살았어.”라고 고백합니다. 그녀는 재능과 재력을 가지고 태어났지만 “내 인생에서 아무것도 한 것이 없어. 형편없었고 무언가에 빠져본 적도 없었어.”라고 말했습니다. 니콜라는 이룬 것도 거의 없이 지금 이 세상을 떠나야 한다는 사실이 너무 고통스러워 아무 생각도 하고 싶지 않았던 것입니다.

그 무렵 나는 전도서를 읽고 있었는데 니콜라의 생각과 뚜렷한 차이점을 발견했습니다. 전도자는 우리가 “장차 들어갈 스올”(9:10), 곧 죽음의 현실을 피할 수 없다고 말합니다. 그 사실을 직면하기가 쉽지 않지만(2절), 그럼으로써 우리는 우리에게 주어지는 매순간을 소중히 여길 수 있고(4절), 우리 가족과 먹는 음식을 의식하며 즐길 수 있으며(7-9절), 목적을 갖고 일을 하고(10절), 모험을 하고 위험도 무릅쓰며(11:1, 6), 우리가 언젠가 만나 아뢸 하나님 앞에서 그 모든 것들을 행하게 될 것입니다(9절; 12:13-14).

니콜라의 친구들은 니콜라가 그들을 신실하고 너그럽게 대해준 것만으로도 그의 삶이 낭비가 아니었다는 것을 증명한다고 지적합니다. 그러나 창조주를 기억하고(12:1), 그분의 길을 따르며, 그분이 주시는 하루 하루를 사랑하며 살기 위해 모든 기회를 붙잡으라고 하는 전도자의 충고가 어쩌면 우리가 삶의 마지막에 마주할 그런 위기로부터 우리 모두를 구해줄 수 있을지도 모르겠습니다.

REMEMBER THE CREATOR

I recently read a novel about a woman who refuses to acknowledge she has terminal cancer. When Nicola’s exasperated friends force her to face the truth, the reason for her avoidance emerges. “I’ve wasted my life,” she tells them. Though born with talents and wealth, “I made nothing of my life. I was sloppy. I never stuck at anything.” The prospect of leaving the world now, feeling she’d achieved little, was too painful for Nicola to contemplate.

I was reading Ecclesiastes around the same time and found the contrast stark. Its Teacher won’t let us avoid the reality of the grave, “the realm of the dead, where you are going” (9:10). And while this is hard to face (V. 2), it can lead us to value every moment we have now (V. 4), intentionally enjoying our food and families (VV. 7–9), working purposefully (V. 10), taking adventures and risks (11:1, 6), and doing it all before the God we’ll one day answer to(V. 9; 12:13–14).

Nicola’s friends point out that her faithfulness and generosity to them proves her life hasn’t been a waste. But maybe the Teacher’s advice can save us all from such a crisis at the end of our lives: remember our Creator (12:1), follow His ways, and embrace every opportunity to live and love that today He provides. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

캘리포니아에 있는 몬테레이 베이 수족관에 들어갈 때 세 살 난 아들 재비어가 내 손을 꼭 잡았습니다. 아이는 천장에 매달린 실물 크기의 혹등고래 조각상을 가리키며 “엄청 커요!”라고 말했습니다. 우리가 전시물을 둘러보는 동안 아이는 계속 눈을 크게 뜨고 다니면서 기뻐했습니다. 먹이 주는 시간에 수달이 물장구를 치는 모습을 보며 우리는 웃었고, 금빛 갈색의 해파리가 전기가 흐르는 푸른 물속에서 춤추는 모습에 푹 빠져 대형 수족관 유리 앞에 숨을 죽이고 서 있었습니다. “하나님이 너와 나를 지으신 것처럼 바닷속에 있는 모든 생물을 다 지으셨단다.”라고 말하자 재비어는 조용히 “와” 하며 감탄했습니다.

시편 104편에서 시편 기자는 하나님께서 수많은 창조물들을 지으셨다고 하면서, “주께서 지혜로 그들을 다 지으셨으니 주께서 지으신 것들이 땅에 가득하나이다”(24절)라고 노래합니다. 이어서 “거기에는 크고 넓은 바다가 있고 그 속에는 생물 곧 크고 작은 동물들이 무수하니이다”(25절)라고 선언하고 나서, 하나님은 창조하신 모든 것들에게 너그럽게 풍족히 공급해주신다고 선포합니다(27-28절). 또 각 생명체의 삶의 날수 정하셨다고 단언합니다 (29-30절).

우리도 “내가 평생토록 여호와께 노래하며 내가 살아있는 동안 내 하나님을 찬양하리로다”(33절)라고 헌신을 선포하며 노래하는 시편 기자처럼 찬양할 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 크고 작은 현존하는 모든 창조물들을 다 지으셨기에 우리는 찬양할 수밖에 없습니다.

GOD MADE THEM ALL

My three-year old son, Xavier, squeezed my hand as we entered the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. Pointing to a life-size sculpture of a humpback whale suspended from the ceiling, he said, “Enormous!” His wide-eyed joy continued as we explored each exhibit. We laughed as the otters splish-splashed during feeding time. We stood in silence in front of a large glass aquarium window, mesmerized by the golden-brown jellyfish dancing in the electric blue water. “God made every creature in the ocean,” I said, “just like He made you and me.” Xavier whispered, “Wow.”

In Psalm 104, the psalmist acknowledged God’s abounding creation and sang, “In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures” (V. 24). He declared, “There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small” (V. 25). He proclaimed God’s generous and satisfying provision for all He created (VV. 27–28). He also affirmed that God has determined the days of each one’s existence (VV. 29–30).

We can join the psalmist in singing this declaration of devotion: “I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live” (V. 33). Every creature that exists, from the big to the small, can lead us to praise because God made them all. - XOCHITL DIXON

헨리는 계속해서 자신이 어떻게 어려운 가정 환경에서 자라났으며, 홀로 되어 최악의 상황에서 어떻게 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 그의 믿음의 토대로 받아들였는지 이야기했습니다(사도행전 4:12). 성령께서 그가 성경의 원칙들을 따라 살 수 있도록 도와주심으로 그의 삶이 변화되었습니다. 헨리는 오래 전에 자신의 삶을 하나님께 바쳤지만, 그의 열정은 여전히 신선하고 강력했습니다.

SHARING EXCITEMENT FOR CHRIST

The first time we met our neighbor Henry, he pulled a well-worn Bible out of a bag he’d been carrying. Eyes sparkling, he asked if we’d like to discuss Scripture. We nodded, and he flipped to some highlighted passages. He showed us a notebook full of his observations and said he’d also created a computer presentation full of other related information.

Henry went on to tell us how he’d come from a difficult family situation and then, alone and at his worst, he accepted Jesus’ death and resurrection as the foundation of his faith (ACTS 4:12). His life had changed as the Spirit helped him follow the Bible’s principles. Although Henry had committed his life to God years ago, his enthusiasm was fresh and powerful.

Henry’s zeal inspired me—someone who’d walked with Jesus many years—to consider my spiritual passion. The apostle Paul wrote: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (ROMANS 12:11). That seems like a tall order, unless I’m allowing Scripture to nurture the kind of attitudes that reflect an ongoing thankfulness for all that Jesus has done for me.

Unlike the emotional highs and lows we experience in life, zeal for Christ comes from an ever-expanding relationship with Him. The more we learn about Him, the more precious He becomes and the more His goodness floods our souls and spills out into the world. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

호주의 브리즈번 시청은 1920년대에 세워진 눈부신 건축물입니다. 흰색 계단은 미켈란젤로가 그의 ‘다비드’ 조각상에 사용한 대리석과 같은 채석장의 대리석으로 뽐내고 있고, 첨탑은 베니스의 성 마르코 대성당의 것을 모방했으며, 구리 돔은 남반구에서 그 크기가 가장 컸습니다. 건축가들은 원래 첨탑 장식으로 거대한 평화의 천사를 설치할 생각이었지만 문제가 생겼습니다. 남은 예산이 없었던 것입니다. 이것을 해결하기 위해 배관공 프레드 존슨이 나섰습니다. 그는 변기 물탱크와 오래된 가로등 기둥, 그리고 고철 조각들을 이용하여 거의 100년 동안 이 시청 건물의 아이콘이 된 공을 장식으로 만들어 첨탑에 올렸습니다.

프레드 존슨이 그가 가진 것을 사용한 것처럼, 우리도 크든 작든 우리가 가진 것으로 하나님의 일에 동참할 수 있습니다. 하나님이 모세에게 이스라엘 백성들을 애굽에서 인도해 내라고 명하셨을 때, 모세는 “그들이 저의 말을 듣지 않...으면 어찌합니까?”(출애굽기 4:1, 새번역)라며 머뭇거렸습니다. 그 대답으로 하나님은 모세에게 “네 손에 있는 것이 무엇이냐”(2절)고 간단히 물으셨습니다. 모세는 평범한 지팡이를 들고 있었습니다. 하나님이 그에게 그 지팡이를 땅 위에 던지라고 하시자 “그것이 뱀으로 변했습니다”(3절). 그런 다음 그 뱀을 집으라고 명하시자 뱀은 다시 지팡이로 변했습니다. 하나님은 모세에게 그가 할 일은 단지 지팡이를 들고 가면 나머지 일은 하나님이 하신다는 것을 신뢰하는 것뿐이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 여기서 주목할 사실은, 하나님이 모세의 손에 있는 그 지팡이를 사용하여 이스라엘 백성을 애굽에서 구원하셨다는 것입니다(7:10-12; 17:5-7).

우리가 가진 것이 보잘것없는 것처럼 보일지 몰라도, 하나님과 함께라면 우리가 무엇을 가지고 있든 그것으로 충분합니다. 하나님은 그분의 일을 위해 우리의 일상적인 것들을 택하여 사용하십니다.

USING WHAT GOD PROVIDES

The Brisbane City Hall in Australia was a dazzling 1920s project. White stairs boasted marble from the same quarry Michelangelo used for his David sculpture. The tower reflected Venice’s St. Mark’s Basilica, and the copper dome was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The builders intended for a massive Angel of Peace to adorn the pinnacle, but there was a problem: no money left. Plumber Fred Johnson came to the rescue. He used a toilet cistern, an old lamp post, and bits of scrap metal to craft the iconic orb that’s crowned the tower for nearly one hundred years.

Much like Fred Johnson and his use of what he had, we can join God’s work with whatever we have—large or small. When He asked Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, Moses balked: “What if they do not . . . listen to me?” (EXODUS 4:1) God answered with a simple question: “What is that in your hand?” (V. 2). Moses held a staff, a simple stick. God told him to throw the staff on the ground, “and it became a snake” (V. 3). Then He instructed Moses to pick up the snake, and it turned back into a staff. All Moses needed to do, God explained, was carry the staff and trust Him to do the rest. Remarkably, He would use that stick in Moses’ hand to rescue Israel from the Egyptians (7:10–12; 17:5–7).

What we have might not seem like much to us, but with God, whatever we have will be enough. He takes our ordinary resources and uses them for His work. - WINN COLLIER

우리의 피난처 되시는 하나님

2019년의 주목할만한 영화 ‘작은 아씨들’을 보고 나는 낡은 소설책을 찾아서 지혜롭고 온화한 어머니 마미가 딸들에게 해주는 위로의 말들을 특별히 다시 읽어보았습니다. 나는 딸들에게 용기를 주는 많은 말에 담겨있는 마미의 견고한 믿음을 묘사한 대목에 마음이 끌렸습니다. 그 중 내게 가장 감동을 준 말은 이것입니다. “고통과 유혹이... 많을지라도 너희가 하나님 아버지의 힘과 온유함을 느끼는 법을 배운다면 그것들을 이겨내고 무사히 헤어날 수 있어.”

마미의 말들은 “여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라”(18:10)고 한 잠언에서도 찾아볼 수 있는 진리입니다. 망대는 고대 도시에서 적의 공격 같은 위험 상황을 맞아 안전한 장소로 사용하기 위해 세워졌습니다. 마찬가지로 예수님을 믿는 신자들도 하나님께로 달려감으로써 “우리의 피난처요 힘이신”(시편 46:1) 그분의 보살핌 속에서 평안을 경험할 수 있습니다.

잠언 18장 10절은 하나님의 보호는 하나님이 누구신가를 나타내는 하나님의 “이름”으로부터 온다고 말합니다. 성경은 하나님을 “자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님”(출애굽기 34:6) 으로 묘사합니다. 하나님의 보호는 그분의 강력한 힘뿐 아니라, 상처받은 자들에게 피난처를 마련해주기를 바라시는 그분의 온유하심과 사랑으로부터 옵니다. 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지는 고통받는 모든 이들을 위해 그분의 능력과 온유함으로 피난처를 제공해 주십니다.

GOD OUR REFUGE

The remarkable 2019 movie Little Women sent me back to my worn copy of the novel, especially the comforting words of Marmee, the wise and gentle mother. I’m drawn to the novel’s depiction of her steadfast faith, which underlies many of her words of encouragement to her daughters. One that stood out to me was this: “Troubles and temptations . . . may be many, but you can overcome and outlive them all if you learn to feel the strength and tenderness of your heavenly Father.”

Marmee’s words echo the truth found in Proverbs that “the name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (18:10). Towers were built in ancient cities to be places of safety during danger, perhaps because of an enemy attack. In the same way, it’s through running to God that believers in Jesus can experience peace in the care of the One who’s “our refuge and strength” (PSALM 46:1).

Proverbs 18:10 tells us protection comes from God’s “name”— which refers to all of who He is. Scripture describes God as “the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (EXODUS 34:6). God’s protection comes from His mighty strength, as well as His tenderness and love, which causes Him to long to provide refuge to the hurting. For all who are struggling, our heavenly Father offers a place of refuge in His strength and tenderness. - LISA M. SAMRA

패트릭은 평소에는 현금을 가지고 다니지 않았지만, 그날 집을 나서기 전 웬일인지 하나님이 5불짜리 지폐 한 장을 주머니에 넣고 가라고 하신다는 느낌을 받았습니다. 근무하는 학교에 가서 점심 시간이 되어서야 긴급한 필요를 충족시키기 위해 하나님이 그를 준비시키신 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 붐비는 식당에서 이런 말을 들었습니다. “스카티 (도움이 필요한 아이)가 남은 한 주 동안 점심을 먹을 수 있도록 그의 계좌에 넣어줄 5불이 필요합니다.” 패트릭이 스카티를 돕기 위해 돈을 주면서 느꼈을 감격을 상상해 보십시오!

바울은 디도서에서 신자들에게 그들이 구원을 받은 것은 “[그들이] 행한 의로운 일 때문”(3:5, 새번역)이 아니라, 그들이 “조심하여 선한 일을 하는데 힘쓰게 하려함”(8절; 14절 참조)이라고 상기시켜 주었습니다. 우리의 생활은 많은 일로 아주 바쁘고 정신이 없어서, 우리 자신의 안위를 보살피는 것만으로도 벅찰 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님을 믿는 우리는 ”선한 일을 할 준비”가 되어 있어야 합니다. 우리에게 없는 것이나 할 수 없는 일에 사로잡히지 말고, 우리에게 ‘있는’ 것과 하나님의 도움으로 우리가 ‘할 수 있는’ 일이 무엇인지 생각해봅시다. 그렇게 할 때 우리는 도움이 필요한 바로 그 순간에 사람들을 도울 수 있고 그럼으로써 하나님이 영광을 받으십니다. “이같이 너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비취게 하여 그들로 너의 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라”(마태복음 5:16).

DOING GOOD FOR GOD

Though he didn’t normally carry money with him, Patrick sensed God was leading him to tuck a five-dollar bill in his pocket before leaving home. During the lunch hour at the school where he worked, he understood how God had prepared him to meet an urgent need. In the midst of the lunchroom buzz, he heard these words: “Scotty [a child in need] needs $5 to put on his account so he can eat lunch for the rest of the week.” Imagine the emotions Patrick experienced as he gave his money to help Scotty!

In Titus, Paul reminded believers in Jesus that they weren’t saved “because of righteous things [they] had done” (3:5), but they should “be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good” (V. 8; SEE V. 14). Life can be full, extremely busy, and hectic. Attending to our own well-being can be overwhelming. Yet, as believers in Jesus, we’re to be “good-works ready.” Rather than being over- whelmed by what we don’t have and can’t do, let’s think about what we do have and can do as God helps us. In doing so, we get to help others at the point of their needs, and God is honored. “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 5:16). - ARTHUR JACKSON
