하나님의 더 큰 능력

1945년 3월, 미군은 “유령 군대”의 도움을 받아 라인 강 도하작전을 성공적으로 완수하여, 제2차 세계대전 때 서부전선에서 작전 수행에 중요한 기지를 동맹국들에게 제공했습니다. 유령 군대의 군인들은 물론 유령이 아니라 실제 사람으로, 23 사령부 특수부대원들이었습니다. 그 때 1,100 명으로 구성된 부대는 모형 탱크 풍선을 사용하고 스피커를 통해 떠들썩한 병력과 차량의 음향 효과를 방송하는 것 등을 통해 30,000명의 부대처럼 보이게 만들었습니다. 상대적으로 적은 수의 유령 군대 병력들을 훨씬 더 큰 군대처럼 보이게 만들어 적군을 두렵게 한 것입니다.

미디안 사람들과 그들의 동맹군도 마찬가지로 어두운 밤에 크게 투영되어 보이는 아주 작은 군대 앞에서 두려움에 떨었습니다(사사기 7:8-22). 하나님은 이스라엘의 사사이자 군대 지도자인 기드온을 사용하여 그의 보잘것없는 군대로 적군에게 공포가 되게 하셨습니다. 그들도 음향 효과(나팔소리, 질그릇을 부수는 소리, 사람 목소리)와 눈에 보이는 물체(불타는 횃불)를 사용하여 “메뚜기의 많은 수와 같은”(12절) 어마어마한 적군들로 하여금 엄청난 적군을 상대한다고 믿게 만들었습니다. 하나님의 명령으로 32,000명에서 300명 밖에 남지 않았던 이스라엘 군대는 그날 밤 적군을 물리쳤습니다(2-8절). 왜 그렇게 하셨을까요? 그렇게 함으로써 그 전쟁에서 진정 승리한 이가 누구인지 분명해졌기 때문입니다. 하나님은 “내가 그들을 너의 손에 넘겨 주겠다”(9절, 새번역)고 기드온에게 말씀하셨습니다.

우리가 연약하고 부족하다고 느낄 때 하나님을 찾아 오직 그분의 능력 안에서 안식하도록 합시다. 하나님의 “능력은 [우리가] 약한 데서 완전해지기” (고린도후서 12:9, 현대인의 성경) 때문입니다.

GOD’S GREATER POWER

In March 1945, the “Ghost Army” helped US forces achieve the Rhine River crossing—giving the allies a vital base to operate from on World War II’s Western Front. The soldiers were most definitely human, not apparitions, all part of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. On this occasion, the 1,100-man team imitated 30,000 men by using inflatable decoy tanks, blasting troop and vehicle sound effects over speakers, and more. The relatively small number of Ghost Army members led the enemy to fear what appeared to be a far greater force.

The Midianites and their allies also trembled before a tiny army that loomed large in the night (JUDGES 7:8–22). Gideon, a judge and military leader of Israel, was used by God to make his puny army a source of terror for the enemy. They also used sound effects (blown trumpets, smashed clay jars, human voices) and visible objects (blazing torches) to make the vast enemy—as “thick as locusts” (V. 12)—believe they were facing a colossal foe. Israel defeated their enemy that night with an army whittled down from 32,000 men to just 300 by God’s command (VV. 2–8). Why? Because that made it clear who truly won the battle. As God told Gideon, “I have given you victory over them!” (V. 9 NLT).

When we feel weak and inferior, let’s seek God and rest in His strength alone. For His “power is made perfect in [our] weak- ness” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). - TOM FELTEN

우리 안에 거하시는 예수님

내가 사는 미국 서부에 눈보라가 덮쳤을 때, 혼자되신 어머니는 폭설을 무사히 “이겨낼 수” 있게 우리 가족과 함께 지내기로 했습니다. 하지만 폭설이 지난 후에도 어머니는 집 으로 가시지 않고 우리 집으로 옮겨와 여생을 우리와 함께 지내셨습니다. 어머니가 함께 지내게 되자 우리 가정에 많은 긍정적인 변화가 생겼습니다. 어머니는 매일 가족들에게 지혜와 충고의 말씀을 해주시고, 조상들에 대한 얘기도 들려주셨습니다. 어머니와 남편은 아주 친한 친구가 되어 유머를 나누며 스포츠 경기를 함께 즐겼습니다. 더 이상 잠깐 들린 손님이 아닌, 영구적이며 아주 중요한 거주민이 되셨던 어머니는 하나님께 부르심을 받은 후에도 영원토록 우리의 마음을 바꾸고 계십니다.

이 경험은 예수님이 “우리 가운데 거하신다”(요한복음 1:14)고 요한이 묘사한 것을 생각나게 해줍니다. ‘거하다’라는 말의 헬라어 원어가 “장막을 치다”를 의미하기 때문에 이것은 설득력 있는 묘사입니다. 다른 번역에는 주님이 “우리 가운데 그분의 집을 만드셨다”고 되어 있습니다.

믿음으로 우리도 예수님을 우리 마음 안에 거하시는 분으로 받아들입니다. 바울은 그것을 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “그의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 그의 성령으로 말미암아 너희 속사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하시오며 믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 계시게 하시옵고 너희가 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어지...기를 구하노라”(에베소서 3:16-17).

그리스도는 일상의 손님이 아니라 그분을 따르는 모든 이에게 영원히 함께 하시며 능력을 주시는 분이십니다. 마음의 문을 활짝 열고 주님을 기쁘게 받아들이시기를 바랍니다.

JESUS DWELLS WITHIN

As a blizzard bore down on my state in the western United States, my widowed mother agreed to stay with my family to “ride out” the storm. After the blizzard, however, she never returned to her house. She moved in, welling with us for the rest of her life. Her presence changed our household in many positive ways. She was available daily to provide wisdom, advice to family members, and share ancestral stories. She and my husband became the best of friends, sharing a similar sense of humor and love of sports. No longer a visitor, she was a permanent and vital resident—forever changing our hearts even after God called her home.

The experience recalls John’s description of Jesus—that He “dwelt among us” (JOHN 1:14 KJV). It’s a compelling description because in the original Greek the word dwelt means “to pitch a tent.” Another translation says, He “made his home among us” (NLT).

By faith, we also receive Jesus as the One who dwells in our hearts. As Paul wrote, “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong” (EPHESIANS 3:16–17 NLT).

Not a casual visitor, Jesus is an empowering permanent resident of all who follow Him. May we open wide the doors of our hearts and welcome Him. - PATRICIA RAYBON

그리스도를 향한 마음

‘입다물고 있으면 아무 잘못도 안 하게 될 거야.’ 나는 속으로 말했습니다. 나는 동료가 한 말을 오해한 후 겉으로는 계속 화를 참고 있었습니다. 매일 만나야 했기 때문에 대화는 꼭 필요한 정도만 하기로 (그리고 침묵으로 보복하기로) 했습니다. 그런데 침묵하는 처신이 어떻게 잘못이 될 수 있을까요?

예수님은 죄가 마음에서 시작된다고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 15:18-20). 내 침묵에 사람들이 속아서 모든 것이 잘되고 있다고 생각했을지도 모르지만, 하나님은 속지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 내가 분노로 가득 찬 마음을 숨기고 있는 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 나는 마치 입술로는 하나님을 공경하되 마음은 하나님에게서 멀리 있던 바리새인과 같았습니다(8절). 비록 내 진실된 감정이 겉으로 드러나지 않았을 지는 몰라도 내 안에 쓴 뿌리가 자라며 곪고 있었습니다. 하나님 아버지와 함께하며 늘 느꼈던 기쁨과 친밀함이 사라졌습니다. 죄를 키우고 숨긴 결과였습니다.

하나님의 은혜에 힘입어 동료에게 내 감정을 말하고 사과했습니다. 동료는 흔쾌히 나를 용서했고 나중에 우리는 좋은 친구가 되었습니다. 예수님은 “마음에서 악한 생각들이 나온다”(19절, 새번역)고 말씀하십니다. 중요한 것은 우리 마음의 상태입니다. 우리 마음 속에 거하는 사악함이 우리 삶 속으로 넘쳐 흐르기 때문입니다. 우리의 겉과 속 둘 다 중요합니다.

A HEART FOR CHRIST

As long as you keep your mouth closed, I told myself, you won’t be doing anything wrong. I’d been outwardly holding back my anger toward a colleague after misinterpreting things she’d said. Since we had to see each other every day, I decided to limit communication to only what was necessary (and retaliate with my silent treatment). How could a quiet demeanor be wrong?

Jesus said that sin begins in the heart (MATTHEW 15:18−20). My silence may have fooled people into thinking all was well, but it wasn’t fooling God. He knew I was hiding a heart filled with anger. I was like the Pharisees who honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him (V. 8). Even though my outward appearance didn’t show my true feelings, the bitterness was festering inside me. The joy and closeness I’d always felt with my heavenly Father were gone.

Nurturing and hiding sin does that. By God’s grace, I told my colleague how I was feeling and apologized. She graciously forgave me and, eventually, we became good friends. “Out of the heart come evil thoughts” (V. 19), Jesus says. The state of our heart matters because evil residing there can overflow into our lives. Both our exterior and interior matter. - KAREN HUANG

하나님이 도우시는 대로 말하기

보통은 나비를 시끄러운 생명체라고 생각하지 않습니다. 실제로 호랑나비 한 마리의 날갯짓은 소리가 거의 들리지 않습니다. 그러나 멕시코 열대우림에서 짧은 생을 시작하는 호랑나비떼의 날갯짓은 놀라울 만큼 시끄럽습니다. 수백만 마리의 나비들이 동시에 날갯짓을 할 때면 마치 쏟아지는 폭포 소리처럼 요란합니다.

에스겔이 본 환상에서 아주 다른 날개가 달린 네 마리의 생명체가 나타날 때에도 이와 비슷한 묘사가 등장합니다. 비록 나비의 수보다 적지만 에스겔은 생명체의 날갯짓 소리를 “폭포 소리”(에스겔 1:24, 현대인의 성경) 에 비유합니다. 생명체들이 가만히 서서 날개를 접을 때, 에스겔은 “너는 [이스라엘 백성들에게] 나의 말을 전하여라”(2:7, 새번역)라고 하시는 하나님의 음성을 들었습니다.

에스겔은 구약의 다른 선지자들과 마찬가지로 하나님의 백성들에게 진리를 말하는 임무를 맡았습니다. 오늘날 하나님은 우리 주위에 두신 사람들에게 우리 삶에서 행하시는 그분의 선한 일의 진리를 나누라고 우리 모두에게 요구하십니다(베드로전서 3:15). 때때로 우리는 직접적인 질문을 받는데 이는 마치 폭포수처럼 “크게 들리는” 나누라는 요청입니다. 어떤 때에는 그 요청은 말이 필요없는 것 같은 작은 속삭임일 때도 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 나누어달라는 권고가 백만 마리의 나비 날갯짓처럼 요란하든, 단 한 마리의 날갯짓인 듯 조용하든, 우리는 에스겔이 그랬던 것처럼 하나님께서 우리에게 말하기를 원하시는 것을 들을 수 있도록 귀를 기울여야 합니다.

SPEAKING AS GOD HELPS US

One wouldn’t normally think of butterflies as being loud creatures: after all, the flapping of a single Monarch butterfly’s wings is practically inaudible. But in the Mexica rainforest, where many of them begin their short lives, their collective flapping is surprisingly loud. When millions of Monarchs flap their wings at the same time, it sounds like a rushing waterfall.

The same description is made when four very different winged creatures appear in Ezekiel’s vision. Though fewer than the num- ber of butterflies, he likens the sound of their flapping wings to “the roar of rushing waters” (EZEKIEL 1:24). When the creatures stood still and lowered their wings, Ezekiel heard the voice of God calling him to “speak [God’s] words to [the Israelites]” (2:7).

Ezekiel, like the other Old Testament prophets, was charged with the task of speaking truth to God’s people. Today, God asks us all to share the truth of His good work in our lives with those He puts around us (1 PETER 3:15). Sometimes we’ll be asked a direct question—an invitation to share that’s as “loud” as a waterfall. Other times, the invitation might be more of a whisper, such as seeing an unspoken need. Whether the invitation to share God’s love is as loud as a million butterflies or as quiet as just one, we must listen, as Ezekiel did, with ears tuned to hear what God wants us to say. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

주인인가 청지기인가?

“나는 주인일까 청지기일까?” 수십 억 달러 규모의 회사 대표가 가족의 앞날에 대해 고민하면서 스스로에게 던졌던 질문입니다. 막대한 부에 수반되는 유혹을 염려한 그는 상속자들에게 그런 유혹의 부담을 주고 싶지 않았습니다. 그래서 회사 소유권을 포기하고 의결권이 있는 주식 100퍼센트를 신탁에 맡겼습니다. 그가 소유한 모든 것이 하나님께 속해 있음을 알았기에, 그는 그의 가족이 일해서 생활비를 벌게 하고, 또 장차 얻게 될 수익은 기독교 사역을 위한 재정에 사용하도록 하는 결정을 내릴 수 있었습니다.

시편 50편 10절에서 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 “삼림의 짐승들과 뭇산의 가축이 다 내 것”이라고 말씀하십니다. 우리에게 빚진 것이 없으며 우리에게서 아무것도 필요로 하지 않으신 만유의 창조주 하나님은 “나는 네 외양간의 수소나 네 우리의 수염소를 필요로 하지 않는다”고 말씀하십니다(9절, 현대인의 성경). 하나님은 우리가 소유하고 사용하는 모든 것뿐 아니라, 삶을 영위할 힘과 능력 또한 아낌없이 주십니다. 그렇게 해주시기 때문에, 시편에서 보여주는 것처럼 하나님은 우리의 진심에서 우러나오는 경배를 받으시기에 합당한 분이십니다.

하나님은 모든 것을 소유하신 분입니다. 그러나 선하신 하나님은 자신을 내어주기로 선택하셨고, 그분께로 돌이키는 모든 사람은 누구나 다 받아들이십니다. 예수님이 “온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함”이었습니다(마가복음 10:45). 은사보다 그것을 주신 주님을 더 귀히 여기고 그 은사로 주님을 섬길 때, 우리는 주님 안에서 영원히 기뻐하는 복을 받습니다.

OWNER OR STEWARD?

“Am I an owner or a steward?” The CEO of a multibillion-dollar company asked himself that question as he weighed what was best for his family. Concerned about the temptations that can come with vast wealth, he didn’t want to burden his heirs with that challenge. So he gave up ownership of his company and placed 100 percent of the voting stock in a trust. Recognizing that everything he owns belongs to God helped him make the decision to allow his family to earn a living in exchange for work while also using future profits to fund Christian ministry.

In Psalm 50:10, God tells His people, “Every animal of the for- est is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.” As the Creator of all things, God owes us nothing and needs nothing from us. “I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens,” He says (V. 9). He generously provides everything that we have and use as well as the strength and the ability to earn a living. Because He does, as the psalm shows us, He’s worthy of our heartfelt worship.

God owns everything. But because of His goodness, He even chose to give Himself, entering into a relationship with any who turn to Him. Jesus “did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (MARK 10:45). When we value the Giver over the gifts and serve Him with them, we are blessed to delight in Him forever. - JAMES BANKS

레위기까지도

성경공부 모임에서 레위기를 공부하던 중 이런 고백을 했습니다. “읽지 않고 넘어간 부분이 많아요. 피부병에 관한 부분은 다시 안 읽을 겁니다.”

그러자 친구 데이브가 목소리를 높여 말했습니다. “그 구절 때문에 예수님을 믿은 사람을 내가 알고 있어.” 데이브는 무신론자였던 그의 의사 친구가 성경을 전적으로 거부하기 전에 한번 성경을 직접 읽어 보기로 했다고 했습니다. 그러다가 레위기에서 피부병에 관한 부분이 그의 마음을 사로잡았습니다. 거기에는 전염되는 상처와 전염되지 않는 상처에 관해(13:1-46), 그리고 그 치료법(14:8-9)에 관해 놀랍도록 상세한 내용이 들어있었습니다. 당시의 의학 지식을 초월하는 내용들이 레위기에 기록되어 있었던 것입니다. ‘모세가 이 모든 것을 알았을 리가 없다’고 생각한 그 의사는 실제로 모세가 하나님으로부터 그 정보를 받았을 것으로 생각하다가 마침내 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다.

성경에 지루한 부분이 있다는 것에 나도 동의합니다. 그러나 성경 안에 들어있는 말씀들은 다 그 이유가 있습니다. 레위기는 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님을 위하고 하나님과 함께 사는 방법을 알게 하려고 기록되었습니다. 하나님과 그의 백성 사이의 관계를 더 많이 알수록 우리는 하나님 그분에 대해 알게 됩니다.

“모든 성경은 하나님의 감동으로 된 것으로 교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익하다”고 바울 사도는 기록했습니다(디모데후서 3:16). 계속해서 읽어 나갑시다. 레위기까지도.

EVEN LEVITICUS

The topic was Leviticus, and I had a confession to make. “I skipped a lot of the reading,” I told my Bible study group. “I’m not reading about skin diseases again.”

That’s when my friend Dave spoke up. “I know a guy who believed in Jesus because of that passage,” he said. Dave explained that his friend—a doctor—had been an atheist. He decided that before he completely rejected the Bible, he’d better read it for himself. The section on skin diseases in Leviticus fascinated him. It contained surprising details about contagious and noncontagious sores (13:1–46) and how to treat them (14:8–9). He knew this far surpassed the medical knowledge of that day—yet there it was in Leviticus. There’s no way Moses could have known all this, he thought. The doctor began to consider that Moses really did receive his information from God. Eventually he put his faith in Jesus.

If parts of the Bible bore you, well, I’m with you. But everything it says is there for a reason. Leviticus was written so the Israelites would know how to live for and with God. As we learn more about this relationship between God and His people, we learn about God Himself.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuk- ing, correcting and training in righteousness,” wrote the apostle Paul (2 TIMOTHY 3:16). Let’s read on. Even Leviticus. - TIM GUSTAFSON

“나의 믿음 없는 것을 도와주소서”

“내 믿음이 어디에 있을까? 내 마음속 깊은 곳마저 공허와 어둠뿐이다.... 하나님이 계시다면, 부디 저를 용서하소서.”

누가 이 말을 했는지 알면 정말 놀랄 것입니다. 마더 테레사 입니다. 인도 캘커타에서 가난한 사람들을 쉼없이 돌본 사역으로 널리 알려져 모두의 사랑을 받은 마더 테레사는 50년이 넘도록 자신의 믿음을 위해 처절한 내면의 싸움을 치렀습니다. 이런 사실은 1997년 그가 죽고 나서 그의 일기에서 추린 ‘오셔서 나의 빛이 되소서’ 책이 나오면서 알려졌습니다.

하나님이 계시지 않는다고 느껴지거나 의심이 들 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 이럴 때 힘이 드는 정도는 사람마다 다를 것입니다. 그러나 예수님을 믿는 많은 신실한 사람들은 인생의 어느 시점에 그런 의심을 짧게 또는 길게 경험할 수도 있습니다.

성경에는 신앙과 불신앙을 동시에 보여주는 아름답고도 역설적인 기도가 있는데 이것이 나에게는 감사로 여겨집니다. 마가복음 9장에서 예수님은 어릴 때부터 귀신 들려 고통받는 아들의 아버지를 만나 (21절) 그에게 믿음을 가지라고, “믿는 자에게는 능히 하지 못할 일이 없느니라”(23절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러자 그 사람은 “내가 믿나이다. 나의 믿음 없는 것을 도와주소서”(24절)라고 대답했습니다.

이 솔직하고 진실된 간구는 의심으로 힘들어 하는 우리에게, 우리가 지나게 될 아주 깊고 어두운 골짜기 가운데에서도 하나님이 우리의 믿음을 굳게 하시고 우리를 강하게 붙드신다는 것을 믿고, 그 의심을 하나님께 드리라고 권면합니다.

“HELP MY UNBELIEF!”

“Where is my Faith?—even deep down right in there is nothing but emptiness & darkness. . . . If there be God—please forgive me.”

The author of those words might surprise you: Mother Teresa. Beloved and renowned as a tireless servant of the poor in Calcutta, India, Mother Teresa quietly waged a desperate war for her faith over five decades. After her death in 1997, that struggle came to light when portions of her journal were published in the book Come Be My Light.

What do we do with our doubts or feelings of God’s absence? Those moments may plague some believers more than others. But many faithful believers in Jesus may, at some point in their lives, experience moments or seasons of such doubts.

I’m thankful that Scripture has given us a beautiful, paradoxical prayer that expresses both faith and the lack thereof. In Mark 9, Jesus encounters a father whose son had been demonically tormented since childhood (V. 21). When Jesus said that the man must have faith (“Everything is possible for one who believes,” V. 23), the man responded, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (V. 24).

This honest, heartfelt plea invites those of us who struggle with doubt to give it to God, trusting that He can fortify our faith and hold on to us firmly amid the deepest, darkest valleys we’ll ever traverse. - ADAM R. HOLZ

예수님이 멈춰 서실 때

직장 근처에 아파 보이는 고양이 한 마리가 상자 안에서 웅크리고 며칠째 울어대고 있었습니다. 많은 사람들이 버려진 그 고양이를 그대로 지나쳤지만 마침내 준이 보았습니다. 거리 환경미화원인 준은 버려진 고양이를 집으로 데려왔습니다. 그는 이미 두 마리의 유기견을 데려다 살고 있었습니다.

준이 말합니다. “내가 유기동물을 돌보는 이유는 아무도 그들에게 관심을 갖지 않기 때문입니다. 나는 그들에게서 내 모습을 봅니다. 길거리 청소를 하는 나에게도 관심을 보이는 사람이 없으니까요.”

예수님이 예루살렘으로 가시는 길에 여리고를 들르실 때 한 맹인이 길가에 앉아 구걸을 하고 있었습니다. 그도 자신을 관심 밖의 존재로 느끼고 있었습니다. 그러다 어느 날 많은 사람들이 예수님을 보려고 앞다퉈 지나가던 그때에도 이 맹인을 찾아 돌보려는 사람은 없었습니다.

그러나 예수님은 예외였습니다. 예수님은 시끄러운 군중 속에서 잊힌 한 남자의 부르짖는 소리를 들으셨습니다. “네게 무엇을 하여 주기를 원하느냐” 고 물으신 예수님은 그 사람이 “주여 보기를 원하나이다” 하는 마음의 소원을 받아주셨습니다. 그리고 “보라 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였느니라”고 말씀하셨습니다(누가복음 18:41-42).

우리에게도 때로 소외감이 있지 않습니까? 우리보다 더 중하다고 여겨지는 사람들 때문에 우리 목소리가 묻히는 경우가 있지는 않은지요? 그러나 우리 구주 예수님은 세상이 관심을 두지 않는 이들에게 관심을 기울이십니다. 그분께 도움을 청하십시오! 다른 사람들은 그냥 지나갈지 몰라도 예수님은 우리를 위해 멈춰 서실 것입니다.

WHEN JESUS STOPS

For days, the sickly cat cried, huddled in a box near my work- place. Abandoned on the street, the feline went unnoticed by many who passed it by—until Jun came along. The street sweeper carried the animal home, where he lived with two dogs, which were former strays.

“I care for them because they’re the creatures no one notices,” Jun said. “I see myself in them. No one notices a street sweeper, after all.”

As Jesus walked toward Jericho on His way to Jerusalem, a blind man sat begging by the roadside. He felt unnoticed too. And on this day especially—when a crowd was passing through and all eyes were focused on Christ—no one stopped to help the beggar.

No one except Jesus. In the midst of the clamoring crowd, He heard the forgotten man’s cry. “What do you want me to do for you?” Christ asked, and He received the heartfelt reply, “Lord, I want to see.” Then Jesus said, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you” (LUKE 18:41–42).

Do we feel unnoticed at times? Are our cries drowned out by people who seem to matter more than us? Our Savior notices those the world doesn’t care to notice. Call to Him for help! While others may pass us by, He’ll stop for us. - KAREN HUANG

단잠

쌀의 머리 속엔 나쁜 기억들과 비난의 메시지가 가득했습니다. 가슴에는 두려운 마음이 가득했고 온 몸은 땀으로 범벅이 되어 잠을 이룰 수가 없었습니다. 세례식 전날 밤이었는데 끊임없이 어두운 생각들이 몰려왔습니다. 예수 그리스도를 통해 구원받았고 죄가 용서된 것도 알고 있었지만 샐의 영적 전투는 계속되었습니다. 그때 아내가 손을 잡고 그를 위해 기도해 주었습니다. 쌀의 마음 속에서 곧 두려움이 물러가고 평안이 찾아왔습니다. 그는 일어나서 세례를 받기 전에 나눌 글을 썼습니다. 이전에는 엄두도 못 낼 일이었습니다. 그러고 나서 그는 단잠을 잘 수 있었습니다.

다윗 왕도 그런 불안한 밤이 어떤 것인지 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 왕위를 노리는 아들 압살롬으로부터 도망치며(사무엘하 15-17) “천만 대군이 [그를 대적하여] 사방에 진을 치고 있는”(시편 3:6) 것을 알고 “나의 대적이 어찌 그리 많은지요”(1절)라고 탄식했습니다. 두려움과 의심으로 무너질 수도 있었던 다윗은 자신의 “방패”(3절)이신 하나님께 부르짖었습니다. 나중에 그는 “주님께서 [그를] 붙들어 주시기 때문에 누워 곤하게 잠들”(5절, 새번역) 수 있었습니다.

두려움과 고통이 우리 마음을 사로잡고 평안이 불안으로 바뀔 때 우리는 하나님께 기도함으로 소망을 가질 수 있습니다. 샐이나 다윗처럼 금방 단잠에 들지는 못하더라도, 우리는 “평안히 눕고 자며... 안전히 살”(4:8) 수 있습니다.
하나님이 우리와 함께하시며 우리의 안식이 되어 주시기 때문입니다.

SWEET SLEEP

Bad memories and accusing messages flooded Sal’s mind. Sleep eluded him as fear filled his heart and sweat covered his skin. It was the night before his baptism, and he couldn’t stop the onslaught of dark thoughts. Sal had received salvation in Jesus and knew that his sins had been forgiven, but the spiritual battle continued. It’s then that his wife took his hand and prayed for him. Moments later, peace replaced the fear in Sal’s heart. He got up and wrote the words he would share prior to being baptized—something he hadn’t been able to do. After that, he experienced sweet sleep.

King David also knew what a restless night felt like. Fleeing from his son Absalom who wanted to steal his throne (2 SAMUEL 15–17), he knew that “tens of thousands [assailed him] on every side” (PSALM 3:6). David moaned, “How many are my foes!” (V. 1). Though fear and doubt could have won out, he called out to God, his “shield” (V. 3). Later, he found that he could “lie down and sleep . . . because the Lord sustains [him]” (V. 5).

When fears and struggles grip our mind and rest is replaced by restlessness, hope is found as we pray to God. While we might not experience immediate sweet sleep as Sal and David did, “in peace [we can] lie down and . . . dwell in safety” (4:8). For God is with us and He’ll be our rest. - TOM FELTEN

행운이 아니라 그리스도께서

‘디스커버’ 매거진에 의하면 우주에는 7해(7 뒤에 0이 20개 붙는) 개의 행성이 있지만 지구와 같은 행성은 단 하나뿐이라고 합니다. 천체 물리학자 에릭 잭리슨에 의하면 생명을 유지할 수 있는 행성의 조건 중 하나는 온도가 딱 맞고 물이 존재할 수 있는 “최적 상태”의 궤도를 도는 것이라고 합니다. 7해 개의 행성 가운데 지구가 바로 그 조건에 맞는 행성으로 보입니다. 잭리슨의 결론은 지구가 어쨌든 “운이 꽤 좋았다”는 것입니다.

바울은 골로새 신자들에게 우주가 존재하는 것은 행운의 여신 때문이 아니라 예수님이 역사하셨기 때문이라는 것을 확실히 했습니다. 바울 사도는 “만물이 그에게서 창조되었다”(골로새서 1:16)고 하며 그리스도께서 세상의 창조주라고 말합니다. 예수님은 세상을 창조하신 능력의 창조주일 뿐 아니라, 바울의 말처럼 “만물이 그 안에 함께 서 있어서”(17절) 이 세상이 너무 덥지도 너무 춥지도 않게 인간이 존재하기에 꼭 알맞은 곳이 된 것입니다. 예수님은 자신이 창조하신 세상을 그의 완벽한 지혜와 끊이지 않는 능력으로 유지하고 계십니다.

창조의 아름다움에 참여하여 그것을 누리고 있는 우리는, 그것이 행운의 여신이 아무렇게나 만든 것이 아니라 “[하나님의] 모든 충만”(19절)을 소유하신 그리스도께서 목적을 가지고, 주권적으로, 권능과 사랑으로 만드신 것이라고
전하도록 합시다.

NOT LUCK, BUT CHRIST

Discover magazine suggests that there are around 700 quintillion (7 followed by 20 zeros) planets in the universe, but only one like Earth. Astrophysicist Erik Zackrisson said that one of the requirements for a planet to sustain life is to orbit in the “Goldilocks” zone, where the temperature is just right, and water can exist. Out of 700 quintillion planets, Earth seems to be one planet where conditions are just right. Zackrisson concluded that Earth somehow had been dealt a “fairly lucky hand.”

Paul assured the Colossian believers that the universe existed, not because of Lady Luck, but because of the work of Jesus. The apostle presents Christ as the creator of the world: “For in him all things were created” (COLOSSIANS 1:16). Not only was Jesus the powerful creator of the world, but Paul says that “in him all things hold together” (V. 17)—a world that’s not too hot and not too cold, but one that’s just right for human existence. What Jesus created, He’s sustaining with His perfect wisdom and unceasing power.

As we participate in and enjoy the beauty of creation, let’s choose not to point to the random activity of Lady Luck, but to the purposeful, sovereign, powerful and loving One who possesses “all [God’s] fullness” (V. 19). - MARVIN WILLIAMS
