감사로 새로워지는 삶

뇌종양 진단을 받은 크리스티나 코스타는 암을 대하는 대화의 대부분이 전투 용어라는 것을 알았습니다. 전투를 떠올리는 말을 할 때마다 힘이 금방 빠지는 것을 느낀 코스타는 “일년 이상을 자기 몸과 전쟁을 하며 보내고 싶지 않았습니다.” 오히려 자기를 돌봐주는 전문가 팀에게, 그리고 뇌와 몸이 치유되어 가는 모습에 매일 감사하는 것이 훨씬 도움이 된다는 것을 알았습니다. 코스타는 아무리 힘든 경우에도 감사를 하면 우울증을 이겨내고 “우리 뇌에 변화를 주어 회복력을 키워나가는데” 도움이 된다는 것을 직접 체험했습니다.

나는 코스타의 생생한 체험 이야기를 듣고 감사하는 것이 믿는 사람들의 단순한 의무만이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 하나님께 감사를 드리는 것은 마땅한 일이지만, 감사는 우리에게도 아주 유익합니다. 우리가 “내 영혼아
여호와를 송축하며 그의 모든 은택을 잊지 말지어다”(시편 103:2)라고 말하며 우리의 마음을 끌어올릴 때 우리는 하나님이 하시는 수많은 일들을 떠올릴 수 있습니다. 하나님은 용서의 확신을 주시고, 우리의 몸과 마음을 치유하시며, “사랑과 긍휼,” 그리고 그분의 창조 안에 있는 수많은 “좋은 것들”을 경험하게 하십니다(3-5절).

이 땅에 사는 동안 우리의 모든 고통이 다 치유되는 것은 아니지만, “영원부터 영원까지”(17절) 함께 하시는 하나님의 사랑 때문에 우리 마음은 언제나 감사로 새로워질 수 있습니다.

REWIRED BY GRATITUDE

After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Christina Costa noticed how much of the talk around facing cancer is dominated by the language of fighting. She found that this metaphor quickly started to feel exhausting. She “didn’t want to spend over a year at war with [her] own body.” Instead, what she found most helpful were daily practices of gratitude—for the team of professionals caring for her and for the ways her brain and body were showing healing. She experienced firsthand that no matter how difficult the struggle, practices of gratitude can help us resist depression and “wire our brains to help us build resilience.”

Costa’s powerful story reminded me that practicing gratitude isn’t just something believers do out of duty. Although it’s true that God deserves our gratitude, it’s also profoundly good for us. When we lift up our hearts to say, “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (PSALM 103:2), we’re reminded of the countless ways God’s at work—assuring us of forgiveness, working healing in our bodies and hearts, letting us experience “love and compassion” and countless “good things” in His creation (VV. 3–5).

While not all suffering will find complete healing in this lifetime, our hearts can always be renewed by gratitude, for God’s love is with us “from everlasting to everlasting” (V. 17). - MONICA LA ROSE

사랑의 선물

그웬돌린 스툴지스는 자기 결혼식에서 꿈에 그리던 웨딩드레스를 입었습니다. 그리고는 그 드레스를 모르는 사람에게 기부했습니다. 스툴지스는 드레스를 그냥 옷장에 두어 먼지만 쌓이게 해서는 안 된다고 믿었습니다. 다른 신부들도 그와 생각을 같이 하여, 지금은 많은 여성들이 스툴지스의 소셜 미디어를 통해 웨딩드레스를 주고받습니다. 한 기부자는 “이 드레스를 다른 신부들이 계속 이어서 입었으면 좋겠어요. 이걸 입고 예식을 많이 해서 낡고 헤질 때까지 쓸모가 있기를 바래요.”라고 말했습니다.

베푸는 마음에는 참으로 즐거움이 따릅니다. “흩어 구제하여도 더욱 부하게 되는 일이 있나니 과도히 아껴도 가난하게 될 뿐이니라 구제를 좋아하는 자는 풍족하여질 것이요 남을 윤택하게 하는 자는 자기도 윤택하여지리라” (잠언 11:24-25) 라는 말씀도 있습니다.

바울 사도도 신약에서 이 원리를 가르쳤습니다. 그는 에베소 성도들과 헤어지면서 그들을 축복하며(사도행전 20:32) 관대히 베푸는 것의 중요성을 일러주었습니다. 바울은 자신의 사역 정신을 말해주며 그들이 따라야 할 본이라고 하였습니다. “범사에 여러분에게 모본을 보여준 바와 같이 수고하여 약한 사람들을 돕고 또 주 예수께서 친히 말씀하신 바 주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다 하심을 기억하여야 할지니라”(35절).

아낌없이 주는 것은 하나님의 모습입니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사... 주셨습니다”(요한복음 3:16). 하나님이 우리를 인도하실 때 그분의 영광스러운 본을 따르도록 합시다.

GIFTED WITH LOVE

On her wedding day, Gwendolyn Stulgis wore the wedding dress of her dreams. Then she gave it away—to a stranger. Stulgis believed a dress deserved more than sitting in a closet collecting dust. Other brides agreed. Now scores of women have bonded on her social media site to donate and receive wedding dresses. As one giver said, “I hope this dress gets passed from bride to bride to bride, and it just gets worn out and is in tatters at the end of its life because of all the celebrating that’s done in it.”

The spirit of giving can feel like a celebration, indeed. As it is written, “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (PROVERBS 11:24–25).

The apostle Paul taught this principle in the New Testament. As he said his goodbyes to the believers in Ephesus, he gave them a blessing (ACTS 20:32) and reminded them of the importance of generosity. Paul pointed to his own work ethic as an example for them to follow. “In everything I did,” he said, “I showed you that by . . . hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ ” (V. 35).

Being generous reflects God. “For God so loved the world that He gave . . .” (JOHN 3:16). Let’s follow His glorious example as He guides us. - PATRICIA RAYBON

영국 케임브리지의 크라이스트 대학 예배당에는 17세기의 두 명의 의사, 존 핀치와 토머스 베인스에게 헌정하는 기념비가 있습니다. “떨어질 수 없는 친구”로 알려진 핀치와 베인스는 의학 연구도, 해외 순방도 함께 했습니다. 1680년 베인스가 죽자 핀치는 두 사람이 36년 동안 “잘 지켜온 영혼의 결합”을 생각하며 슬퍼했습니다. 그들의 우정은 사랑과 충실과 헌신이 있었던 우정이었습니다.

다윗 왕과 요나단 사이에도 이와 같이 친밀한 우정이 있었습니다. 그들은 서로 깊이 사랑하였고(사무엘상 20:41), 서로 헌신의 서약을 하기까지 했습니다 (8-17, 42절). 그들의 우정에는 참된 충실함이 있었고(19:1-2; 20:13), 요나단은 다윗이 왕이 될 수 있도록 자신의 왕위 계승권을 포기하기까지 했습니다 (20:30-31; 23:15-18 참조). 요나단이 죽자 다윗은 자신을 향한 요나단의 사랑이 “여인의 사랑보다 더하였다”(사무엘하 1:26)며 슬퍼했습니다.

DEEP FRIENDSHIP IN CHRIST

There’s a monument in the chapel of Christ’s College, Cambridge, England, dedicated to two seventeenth-century physicians, John Finch and Thomas Baines. Known as the “inseparable friends,” Finch and Baines collaborated on medical research and traveled together on diplomatic trips. When Baines died in 1680, Finch lamented their “unbroken marriage of souls” that had lasted thirty-six years. Theirs had been a friendship of affection, loyalty, and commitment.

King David and Jonathan had a friendship equally as close. They shared deep mutual affection (1 SAMUEL 20:41), and even made vows of commitment to each other (VV. 8–17, 42). Their friendship was marked by radical loyalty (19:1–2; 20:13), Jonathan even sacrificing his right to the throne so David could become king (20:30–31; SEE 23:15–18). When Jonathan died, David lamented that Jonathan’s love to him had been “more wonderful than that of women” (2 SAMUEL 1:26).

We may feel uncomfortable today likening friendship to marriage, but maybe friendships like Finch and Baines’ and David and Jonathan’s can help our own friendships reach greater depth. Jesus welcomed His friends to lean against Him (JOHN 13:23–25), and the affection, loyalty, and commitment He shows us can be the basis of the deep friendships we build together. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

최고 선수의 겸손

한 대학농구 스타가 경기가 끝난 후 경기장에 남아 빈 컵과 음식 포장물 치우는 일을 도왔습니다. 한 팬이 그 모습을 영상에 담아 올리자 8만 명이 넘는 사람들이 보았습니다. 어떤 사람이 그 영상에 “[그 청년은] 우리가 살면서 볼 수 있는 가장 겸손한 사람 중 하나입니다.”라는 댓글을 달았습니다. 동료 선수들과 함께 경기장을 떠나 승리를 자축하는 게 더 편했을 텐데, 대신 남들이 알아주지 않는 일을 자원해서 한 것입니다.

최고의 겸손한 모습은 하늘 보좌를 떠나 이 땅에 오셔서 종의 역할을 담당하신 예수님에게서 볼 수 있습니다(빌립보서 2:7). 예수님은 그렇게 하지 않으셔도 됐지만 자원하여 기꺼이 자신을 낮추셨습니다. 주님은 이 땅에서 모든 사람을 가르치고 고치고 사랑하는 사역을 하셨을 뿐 아니라, 그들의 구원을 위해 죽으시고 부활하셨습니다.

우리도 그리스도를 본받아 청소를 하고, 수리를 하고, 음식을 나눌 수도 있지만, 가장 잘 본받는 것은 다른 사람을 대하는 우리의 태도가 달라질 때일 것입니다. 참된 겸손은 우리의 행동뿐 아니라 우리가 중요하게 여기는 것까지 바꾸어주는 내면의 성품입니다. 겸손은 “[우리 자신]보다 남을 낫게 여기게” (3절) 해줍니다.

저자이며 설교자인 앤드류 머리는 “겸손은 거룩함에서 피어나는 꽃이요 아름다움”이라고 했습니다. 우리가 성령님의 능력으로 그리스도의 마음을 드러냄으로 이 아름다움이 우리 삶을 통해 드러날 수 있기를 바랍니다(2-5절).

ALL-STAR HUMILITY

A fter a game, a college basketball star stayed behind to help workers throw out empty cups and food wrappers. When a fan posted a video of him in action, more than eighty thousand people viewed it. One person commented, “[The young man] is one of the most humble guys you will ever meet in your life.” It would’ve been easier for the basketball player to leave with his teammates and celebrate his role in the team’s victory. Instead, he volunteered for a thankless job.

The ultimate spirit of humility is seen in Jesus, who left His high position in heaven to take the role of a servant on earth (PHILIPPIANS 2:7). Jesus didn’t have to do it, but He willingly humbled Himself. His ministry on earth included teaching, healing, and loving all people—and dying and rising to save them.

Although Christ’s example can inspire us to sweep a floor, pick up a hammer, or dish up food, it may be most powerful when it finds its way into our attitude toward others. True humility is an inner quality that not only changes our actions but also changes what’s important to us. It motivates us to “value others above [ourselves]” (V. 3).

Author and preacher Andrew Murray said, “Humility is the bloom and the beauty of holiness.” May our lives reflect this beauty as, through the power of His Spirit, we reflect the heart of Christ (VV. 2–5). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

중국인 목사의 여섯 번째 아들로 태어난 존 성은 1920년 미국에 있는 한 대학교에서 장학금을 받아 공부했습니다. 그는 수석으로 대학을 졸업하고 석사를 마치고 박사 학위를 받았습니다. 그러나 학문을 추구하는 동안 그는 하나님으로부터 멀어졌습니다. 그러던 중 1927년 어느 날 밤 존 성은 자신의 삶을 온전히 그리스도께 드리게 되었고, 설교자로 부름받았음을 느꼈습니다.

중국에 돌아가면 돈을 많이 벌 수 있는 기회가 기다리고 있었지만, 고국으로 가는 배에서 그는 자신의 야망을 내려놓으라는 성령님의 명령을 확인했습니다. 하나님께 헌신하는 표시로 그는 자신이 받은 모든 상장을 바다에 던지고, 부모님을 존경하는 마음으로 부모님께 보여드리려고 박사 학위증만 남겼습니다.

FULLY SURRENDERED TO CHRIST

In 1920, John Sung, the sixth child of a Chinese pastor, received a scholarship to study at a university in the United States. He graduated with the highest honors, completed a master’s program, and earned a PhD. But while pursuing his studies, he had walked away from God. Then, one night in 1927, he surrendered his life to Christ and felt called to be a preacher.

Many high-paying opportunities awaited him back in China, but on the ship home, he was convicted by the Holy Spirit to lay aside his ambitions. As a symbol of his commitment, he threw all his awards into the sea, keeping only his PhD certificate to give to his parents out of respect for them.

John Sung understood what Jesus said about becoming His disciple: “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (MARK 8:36). As we deny ourselves and leave our old life behind to follow Christ and His leading (VV. 34–35), it may mean sacrificing personal desires and material gain that distract us from following Him.

For the next twelve years, John carried out his God-given mission wholeheartedly, preaching the gospel to thousands throughout China and Southeast Asia. How about us? We may not be called to be preachers or missionaries, but wherever God calls us to serve, by His Spirit working in us, may we fully surrender to Him.

우리의 왕이신 예수님

세계에서 가장 햇살이 많이 내리쬐고 가장 건조한 어떤 나라에서 석유 시추를 하고 있을 때 시추팀이 거대한 지하수를 발견하고는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그래서 1983년 “인간이 만든 위대한 강” 프로젝트가 시작되어, 양질의 담수를 절실히 필요로 하는 여러 도시로 지하수를 운반할 수 있는 파이프 시스템을 설치했습니다. 프로젝트를 시작한 곳 인근에 있는 명판에는 “여기서부터 생명의 동맥이 흐른다.”고 쓰여 있습니다.

이사야 선지자는 장차 오실 의로운 왕을 사막에 흐르는 물의 이미지로 묘사했습니다(이사야 32). 왕들과 통치자들이 정의와 공의로 다스릴 때 그들은 마치 “마른 땅에 냇물 같을 것이며 곤비한 땅에 큰 바위 그늘”(2절) 같을 것입니다. 베푸는 대신 빼앗아가는 쪽을 택하는 통치자들도 있겠지만, 하나님을 공경하는 지도자는 쉼터와 피난처, 회복, 그리고 보호를 제공해주는 사람입니다. 이사야는 “[하나님의] 공의의 열매는 화평이요 공의의 결과는 영원한 평안과 안전이라”(17절)고 말했습니다.

JESUS OUR KING

While drilling for oil in one of the sunniest and driest countries in the world, teams were shocked to uncover a huge underground system of water. So, in 1983 the “great man-made river” project was begun, placing a system of pipes to carry the high-quality fresh water to cities where it was sorely needed. A plaque near the project’s inception states, “From here flows the artery of life.”

The prophet Isaiah used the image of water in a desert to describe a future righteous king (ISAIAH 32). As kings and rulers reigned with justice and righteousness, they would be like “streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land” (V. 2). Some rulers choose to take instead of give. The mark of a God-honoring leader, however, is someone who brings shelter, refuge, refreshment, and protection. Isaiah said that “the fruit of [God’s] righteousness will be peace” for His people, and “its effect will be quietness and confidence forever” (V. 17).

Isaiah’s words of hope would later find fullness of meaning in Jesus, who “himself will come down from heaven . . . . And so we will be with the Lord forever” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:16–17). “The great man-made river” is just that—made by human hands. Someday that water reservoir will be depleted. But our righteous King brings refreshment and water of life that will never run dry.

돌봄을 통한 전도

어느 젊은 목사는 매일 아침 하나님께 오늘 하루도 누군가를 축복하는 데 자신을 써달라고 간구하는 기도를 드렸습니다. 정말 기쁘게도 그 목사는 기도의 응답을 자주 받았습니다. 어느 날 그가 부업으로 하는 일터에서 한 동료와 함께 햇볕을 쬐며 쉬고 있는데, 동료가 목사에게 예수님에 대해 물어보았습니다. 목사는 그 사람의 질문에 간단하게 대답했습니다. 목소리도 높지 않았고, 언쟁도 없었습니다. 그는 성령님이 이끄시는 대로 동료와 편안하게 대화를 했으며, 효과적이면서도 사랑이 넘치는 대화였다고 말했습니다. 또한 그는 하나님에 대해 더 많이 배우고 싶어 하는 새로운 친구를 얻게 되었습니다.

성령님이 우리를 이끄시도록 할 때 우리는 예수님을 가장 잘 전할 수 있습니다. 주님은 제자들에게 “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고... 내 증인이 되리라”(사도행전 1:8)고 말씀하셨습니다.

성령의 열매는 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제”(갈라디아서 5:22-23)입니다. 성령님의 통치 아래 살아가는 이 젊은 목사는 베드로가 가르친 것을 그대로 삶으로 옮겼습니다. “너희 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 묻는 자에게는 대답할 것을 항상 준비하되 온유와 두려움으로 하라”(베드로전서 3:15).

SHARING BY CARING

The young pastor prayed every morning, asking God to use him that day to bless someone. Often, to his delight, such a situation arose. One day during a break at his second job, he sat in the sunshine with a coworker who asked him about Jesus. The pastor simply answered the other man’s questions. No rant. No arguing. The pastor commented that being guided by the Holy Spirit led him to have a casual talk that felt effective but loving. He made a new friend as well—someone hungry to learn more about God.

Letting the Holy Spirit lead us is the best way to tell others about Jesus. He told His disciples, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses” (ACTS 1:8).

The fruit of the Spirit “is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (GALATIANS 5:22–23). Living under the Spirit’s control, that young pastor put into practice what Peter instructed: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 PETER 3:15).

Even if we suffer for believing in Christ, our words can show the world that His Spirit leads us. Then our walk will draw others to Him.

하나님의 은혜의 선물

내가 가르치고 있는 대학의 작문 수업의 논문들을 채점하고 있을 때, 나는 한 특별한 논문에 깊은 인상을 받았습니다. 정말 잘 쓴 글이었습니다! 하지만 곧 나는 그것이 지나치게 잘 쓰였다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 아니나 다를까, 약간 조사를 해보니 그 논문은 온라인 자료를 표절한 것으로 드러났습니다.

나는 해당 여학생에게 이메일을 보내어 거짓이 밝혀졌기 때문에 그 논문은 0점 처리되겠지만, 새로 써 내면 어느 정도 점수를 받을 수 있다고 했습니다. 그 학생은 이렇게 회신했습니다. “부끄럽고 매우 죄송합니다. 저에게 베푸신 은혜에 감사드리지만, 제게 그럴 자격이 있을까요?” 나는 예수님께서 우리 모두에게 매일 은혜를 베푸시는데, 나도 은혜를 베풀어야 하지 않겠느냐고 답장을 보냈습니다.

하나님의 은혜는 다양하게 우리의 삶을 향상시키고 또 실수로부터 우리를 구해줍니다. 베드로는 하나님의 은혜로 구원을 받는다고 말합니다. “주 예수의 은혜로 구원받는 줄을 믿노라”(사도행전 15:11). 바울은 하나님의 은혜로 우리가 죄에 사로잡히지 않는다고 말합니다. “죄가 너희를 주장하지 못하리니 이는 너희가 법 아래에 있지 아니하고 은혜 아래에 있음이라”(로마서 6:14). 그리고 베드로는 은혜로 말미암아 우리가 섬길 수 있다고 말합니다. “각각 은사를 받은 대로 하나님의 여러 가지 은혜를 맡은 선한 청지기 같이 서로 봉사하라” (베드로전서 4:10).

하나님께서 거저 주신 ‘은혜’(에베소서 4:7), 이 선물을 다른 사람을 사랑하고 격려하는 데에 사용할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

GOD’S GIFT OF GRACE

As I was grading another stack of papers for a college writing class I teach, I was impressed with one particular paper. It was so well-written! Soon, though, I realized it was too well written. Sure enough, a little research revealed that the paper had been plagiarized from an online source.

I sent the student an email to let her know that her ruse had been discovered. She was getting a zero on this paper, but she could write a new paper for partial credit. Her response: “I am humiliated and very sorry. I appreciate the grace you are showing me. I don’t deserve it.” I responded by telling her that we all receive Jesus’ grace every day, so how could I deny showing her grace?

There are many ways God’s grace enhances our lives and redeems us from our errors. Peter says it gives salvation: “We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved” (ACTS 15:11). Paul says it helps us not to be overtaken by sin: “Sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace” (ROMANS 6:14). Elsewhere, Peter says grace allows us to serve: “Use whatever gift you have received . . . as faithful stewards of God’s grace” (1 PETER 4:10).

Grace. So freely given by God (EPHESIANS 4:7). May we use this gift to love and encourage others.

상쾌한 말

딸아이가 부엌에 서서 “엄마, 꿀 속에 파리가 있어요!” 라고 외쳤습니다. 나는 “파리 잡는 데는 식초보다 꿀이 더 낫다”라는 친숙한 속담으로 대답했습니다. (우연히) 꿀로 파리를 잡은 것은 이번이 처음이었지만, 내가 이 현대 속담을 인용한 것은 “쌀쌀한 태도보다 친절하게 부탁하면 상대방을 더 잘 설득할 수 있다”는, 속담이 지니고 있는 지혜 때문이었습니다.

잠언서는 하나님의 영으로 감동받은 지혜로운 속담과 격언을 우리에게 들려줍니다. 이 영감 받은 격언들은 어떻게 하나님을 영화롭게 하며 살 수 있는지 알려주는 중요한 진리로 우리를 인도하고 가르치는데 도움을 줍니다. 잠언의 많은 부분이 우리가 하는 말이 다른 사람에게 얼마나 깊은 영향을 미칠 수 있는지 등을 포함하여 주로 대인관계에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.

REFRESHING WORDS

Standing in the kitchen, my daughter exclaimed, “Mom, there’s a fly in the honey!” I quipped back with the familiar adage, “You will always catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” While this was the first time I’d (accidentally) caught a fly with honey, I found myself quoting this modern proverb because of its wisdom: kind requests are more likely to persuade others than a bitter attitude.

The book of Proverbs gives us a collection of wise proverbs and sayings inspired by God’s Spirit. These inspired sayings help to guide us and teach us important truths about how to live in ways that honor God. Many of the proverbs focus on interpersonal relationships, including the profound effect our words can have on others.

In a section of proverbs attributed to King Solomon, he warned against the harm caused by speaking falsely against a neighbor (PROVERBS 25:18). He counseled that a “sly tongue” results in dreary relationships (V. 23). Solomon warned against the chilling effect of constantly using complaining words (V. 24). And the king encouraged readers that blessing comes when our words bring good news (V. 25).

As we seek to apply these truths, we have God’s Spirit who helps us give a “proper answer” (16:1). Empowered by Him, our words can be sweet and refreshing.

여러 해 전 줄리 랜즈만은 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 오페라 오케스트라의 수석 프렌치 호른 연주자가 되기 위해 오디션을 보았습니다. 메트로폴리탄 오페라 오케스트라는 심사위원들의 편견을 피하기 위해 스크린 뒤에서 오디션을 진행했습니다. 랜즈만은 오디션에서 좋은 성적을 거두어 결국 합격했습니다. 그러나 줄리가 스크린 뒤에서 나오자 전원이 남성이었던 심사위원 중 몇 명이 방 뒤쪽으로 걸어가면서 그녀에게 등을 돌렸습니다. 분명히 그들은 다른 사람을 찾고 있었습니다.

NO MORE PREJUDICE

Many years ago, Julie Landsman auditioned for principal French hornist for New York’s Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The MET held their auditions behind a screen to avoid prejudice by the judges. Landsman did well in her audition and ended up winning the competition. But when she stepped out from behind the screen, some of the all-male judges walked to the rear of the room and turned their backs on her. Apparently, they were looking for someone else.

When the Israelites asked for a king, God accommodated the people and gave them a man who was physically imposing like the other nations had (1 SAMUEL 8:5; 9:2). But because Saul’s first years as king were marked by faithlessness and disobedience, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king (16:1–13). When Samuel saw Eliab, the oldest son, he assumed that God had chosen him to be king because he was physically impressive. But God challenged Samuel’s thinking: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (V. 7). God had chosen David to lead His people (V. 12).

When evaluating people’s ability and suitability for His purposes, God looks at character, will, and motives. He invites us to be attuned to see the world and people as He does—focusing on peoples’ hearts and not their outward appearance or credentials.
