이상한 곳

‘하나님, 왜 이런 일이 일어나고 있지요? 이것이 진정 우리를 위한 하나님의 계획인가요?’

남편이자 어린 자녀를 둔 아빠로서, 암이 심각하다는 진단을 받고 힘들어 하면서 이런 질문들이 계속해서 내 마음 속에 소용돌이쳤습니다. 게다가 우리 가족은 방금 선교팀과 함께 많은 어린이들이 예수님을 구주로 영접하는 것을 보고 돌아온 길이었습니다. 하나님은 분명한 열매를 맺도록 하셨고, 그 기쁨이 너무나 컸습니다. 그런데 이제 암이라니요?

아마 에스더도 사랑하는 집에서 뽑혀 낯선 세계로 내몰린 후 하나님께 질문과 기도를 쏟아 부었을 것입니다(에스더 2:8). 사촌 모르드개가 고아가 된 에스더를 친딸처럼 키웠습니다(7절). 그러나 그 후 에스더는 왕의 후궁들 처소에 들어가게 되었으며, 마침내는 왕후의 자리까지 올라가게 되었습니다 (17절). 모르드개는 당연히 에스더가 “어떻게 될지”에 대해 염려했습니다(11 절). 그러나 이윽고 두 사람은 하나님이 에스더를 “이 때를 위하여”(4:14) 큰 권능의 장소, 곧 이스라엘 백성을 멸망에서 구원할 수 있는 장소로 부르셨다는 것을 깨달았습니다(7-8장).

하나님께서 그분의 완벽한 계획의 일부로 에스더를 낯선 곳에 두셨다는 것은 자명합니다. 하나님은 내게도 똑같이 하셨습니다. 나는 암의 기나긴 투병을 견뎌 나가면서 수많은 환자와 간병인들에게 믿음을 나눌 수 있는 특권을 누렸습니다. 주님이 당신을 어떤 낯선 곳으로 인도하셨습니까? 주님을 믿으십시오. 주님은 선하시며 주님의 계획도 그렇습니다(로마서 11:33-36).

STRANGE PLACES

God, why is this happening? Is this really your plan for us?

As a husband and a dad of young children, those questions and more swirled in my mind as I wrestled with a serious cancer diagnosis. What’s more, our family had just served with a missions team that had seen many children receive Jesus as their Savior. God had been bringing forth evident fruit. There was so much joy. And now this?

Esther likely poured out questions and prayers to God after she was plucked from a loving home and thrust into a strange new world (ESTHER 2:8). Her cousin Mordecai had raised her as his own daughter after she’d been orphaned (V. 7). But then she was placed in a king’s harem and eventually elevated to serve as his queen (V. 17). Mordecai was understandably concerned about what “was happening to” Esther (V. 11). But in time, the two realized that God had called her to be in a place of great power “for such a time as this” (4:14)—a place that allowed for her people to be saved from destruction (CHS. 7–8).

It’s evident that God providentially placed Esther in a strange place as part of His perfect plan. He did the same with me. As I endured a lengthy battle with cancer, I was privileged to share my faith with many, many patients and caregivers. What strange place has He led you to? Trust Him. He’s good, and so are His plans (ROMANS 11:33–36).

듣기를 속히 하라

친한 친구가 나를 비난한 것에 반박하려고 입을 열자 내 심장 박동이 빨라지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 내가 온라인에 게시한 것은 친구 생각처럼 친구와 관련된 내용이 아니었습니다. 그러나 나는 대답하기 전에 먼저 속삭이듯 기도했습니다. 그렇게 진정한 다음 친구가 하는 말과 그 말 뒤에 숨겨진 아픔을 들었습니다. 친구의 상처가 겉으로 보기보다 더 깊은 것이 분명했습니다. 아파하고 있는 친구의 아픔을 먼저 해결해 주기로 마음을 먹자 나는 나를 방어할 필요를 느끼지 못했습니다.

친구와 대화를 하는 동안, 나는 오늘의 성경말씀에서 야고보가 “듣기는 속히 하고 말하기는 더디 하며 성내기도 더디 하라”(1:19)고 권한 말씀의 의미가 무엇인지 깨닫게 되었습니다. 경청은 우리에게 단어 뒤에 숨겨진 의미를 들을 수 있게 해주고, “하나님의 의를 이루지 못하게 하는” 분노를 피할 수 있도록 도와줍니다(20절). 그리고 우리로 하여금 말하는 사람의 마음을 읽게 해줍니다. 나는 잠시 멈추어 기도한 것이 친구와의 대화에 큰 도움이 되었다고 생각합니다. 나는 내 반박보다 오히려 친구의 말에 더 세심한 관심을 가질 수 있었습니다. 만일 내가 잠시 멈추어 기도하지 않았다면, 내 생각대로 되받아치면서 내가 얼마나 기분 상했는지 말했을 것입니다.

야고보가 기술하고 있는 가르침을 항상 따르지는 못했지만, 나는 그날만큼은 실천했다고 생각합니다. 분노와 불쾌감에 사로잡히기 전에 기도하기 위해 잠시 멈추는 것이 듣기는 속히 하고 말하기를 더디 하는 열쇠입니다. 하나님께서 지혜를 주셔서 이것을 좀더 자주 실천할 수 있기를 기도합니다(잠언 19:11).

QUICK TO LISTEN

I felt my heart rate increase as I opened my mouth to refute the charges a dear friend was leveling against me. What I had posted online had nothing to do with her as she implied. But before I replied, I whispered a prayer. I then calmed down and heard what she was saying and the hurt behind her words. It was clear that this went deeper than the surface. My friend was hurting, and my need to defend myself dissolved as I chose to help her address her pain.

During this conversation, I learned what James meant in today’s Scripture when he urged us to “be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (1:19). Listening can help us hear what may be behind the words and to avoid anger that “does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (V. 20). It allows us to hear the heart of the speaker. I think stopping and praying helped me greatly with my friend. I became much more sensitive to her words rather than my own offense. Perhaps if I hadn’t stopped to pray, I would have fired back my thoughts and shared how offended I was.

And while I haven’t always gotten the instruction James outlines right, that day, I think I did. Stopping to whisper a prayer before allowing anger and offense to take a hold of me was the key to listening quickly and speaking slowly. I pray that God will give me the wisdom to do this more often (PROVERBS 19:11).

폐품을 아름다운 물건으로

아내 미스카는 이디오피아에서 제작된 목걸이와 원형 귀걸이를 갖고 있습니다. 이 장신구들의 소박한 우아함은 진정한 예술성이 무엇인지 보여줍니다. 그러나 무엇보다 가장 놀라운 것은 이 장신구들에 얽힌 이야기입니다. 수십 년 이어온 치열한 분쟁과 내전으로 이디오피아의 국토는 사용하고 버린 수많은 포탄과 탄약통으로 어지럽혀 있습니다. 이디오피아 국민들은 희망을 갖고 화염이 휩쓸고 간 땅을 샅샅이 뒤지며 폐품들을 치웁니다. 그러면 공예가들이 포탄과 탄약통의 잔해물을 사용하여 장신구를 만드는 것입니다.

이 이야기를 들었을 때, 마치 미가 선지자가 하나님의 약속을 과감히 선포하는 것을 듣는 것 같았습니다. 선지자는 언젠가 무리가 “그 칼을 쳐서 보습을 만들고 창을 쳐서 낫을 만들 것”(4:3)이라고 선포했습니다. 죽이고 불구로 만들기 위한 도구들은 하나님의 강력한 역사하심으로 삶을 풍요롭게 해주는 도구로 바뀌게 될 것입니다. 하나님의 때가 이르면 “이 나라와 저 나라가 다시는 칼을 들고 서로 치지 아니하며 다시는 전쟁을 연습하지 아니하리라” (3절)고 선지자는 선포했습니다.

미가 선지자가 자신이 살던 때에 선포하던 외침을 상상하는 것은 우리에게 그리 어렵지 않습니다. 옛 이스라엘 시대처럼, 우리도 역시 폭력과 전쟁을 겪고 있으며, 그렇기에 이 세상이 바뀔 수 있다는 것은 불가능하게만 보입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분의 자비와 치유하심으로 이 놀라운 날이 다가오고 있음을 우리에게 약속하십니다. 그러므로 우리가 해야 할 일은 이 진리를 지금부터 삶으로 실천하기 시작하는 것입니다. 하나님은 지금도 폐품을 아름다운 물건으로 바꾸시는 그분의 사역을 우리가 맡아서 행하도록 도와주십니다.

SCRAPS TO BEAUTY

My wife, Miska, has a necklace and hoop earrings from Ethiopia. Their elegant simplicity reveals genuine artistry. What’s most astounding about these pieces, however, is their story. Due to decades of fierce conflict and a civil war that rages on, Ethiopia’s geography is littered with spent artillery shells and cartridges. As an act of hope, Ethiopians scour the torched earth, cleaning up the scraps. And artisans craft jewelry out of what remains of the shells and cartridges.

When I heard this story, I heard echoes of Micah boldly declaring God’s promise. One day, the prophet announced, the people would “beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” (4:3). Tools meant to kill and maim would, because of God’s powerful action, be transformed into tools meant to nurture life. In God’s coming day, the prophet insisted, “nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” (V. 3).

Micah’s pronouncement was no harder to imagine in his day than ours. Like Israel of old, we face violence and war, and it seems impossible that the world could ever change. But God promises us that by His mercy and healing, this astounding day is coming. The thing for us, then, is to begin to live this truth now. God helps us to take on His work even now, turning scraps into beautiful things.

올바른 집중

우리는 카를 일년 넘게 알고 지냈습니다. 그는 우리가 매주 만나 하나님에 대해 깨달은 바를 나누는 교회 소그룹의 일원이었습니다. 정기 모임을 하던 어느 날 저녁, 카는 자기가 올림픽 경기에 출전했던 일을 말했습니다. 너무나 대수롭지 않은듯 이야기해서 거의 생각 없이 지나칠 뻔했습니다. 거의 놓칠 뻔한 겁니다. 아, 내가 올림픽 동메달 결정전에 출전한 선수와 함께 있다는 사실을 그제야 깨달았습니다! 카가 왜 전에 그 이야기를 하지 않았는지 이유는 알 수 없지만, 카에게는 운동선수로서의 성취가 그의 삶의 특별한 부분이긴 하지만 더 중요한 것들이 그의 정체성의 중심에 있었던 것입니다. 그것은 그의 가족과 공동체, 그리고 그의 믿음이었습니다.

누가복음 10:1-23의 이야기는 우리 정체성의 중심이 무엇이 되어야 하는지 말하고 있습니다. 예수님이 하나님 나라를 전하라고 보낸 72명의 제자들이 전도여행을 마치고 돌아왔을 때, 그들은 “주의 이름이면 귀신들도 우리에게 항복하더이다”(17절)라고 보고했습니다. 예수님이 비록 그들에게 놀라운 능력을 주시고 보호해 주셨지만, 주님은 그들의 초점이 ‘잘못’되었다고 말씀하셨습니다. 제자들이 기뻐해야 할 이유는 그들의 “이름이 하늘에 기록된 것”(20절) 때문이어야 한다고 주장하셨습니다.

THE RIGHT FOCUS

We’d known Kha for more than a year. He was part of our small group from church that met weekly to discuss what we’d been learning about God. One evening during our regular meeting, he made a reference to having competed at the Olympics. The mention was so casual that it almost escaped my notice. Almost. Lo and behold, I learned I knew an Olympian who had competed in the bronze medal match! I couldn’t fathom that he’d not mentioned it before, but for Kha, while his athletic achievement was a special part of his story, more important things were central to his identity: his family, his community, and his faith.

The story in Luke 10:1–23 describes what should be central to our identity. When the seventy-two people Jesus sent out to tell others about the kingdom of God returned from their journeys, they reported to Him that “even the demons submit to us in your name” (V. 17). While Jesus acknowledged that He’d equipped them with tremendous power and protection, He said they were focused on the wrong thing. He insisted that their cause for rejoicing should be because their “names are written in heaven” (V. 20).

Whatever achievements or abilities God has granted us, our greatest cause for rejoicing is that if we’ve entrusted ourselves to Jesus, our names are written in heaven, and we enjoy His daily presence in our lives.

한 방울씩

16세기 아빌라의 성녀 테레사는 “우리는 모든 것에서 우리에게 즐거운 방식으로 하나님을 섬기는 방법을 찾고 있습니다.”라고 말합니다. 그녀는 우리가 하나님께 완전히 복종하기보다는, 여러 가지로 더 쉽고 “즐거운” 방법을 유지하려는 우리의 모습을 예리하게 보여줍니다. 우리는 천천히, 머뭇거리면서, 심지어는 마지못해 우리의 모든 것을 하나님께 의지하는 경향이 있습니다. 그렇기에 성녀 테레사는 이렇게 고백합니다. “주님께 우리 삶을 한 번에 조금씩 드리더라도, 우리 삶을 온전히 드릴 때까지 한 방울씩 주님의 선물을 받는 것에 만족해야 합니다.”

인간으로서 누군가를 신뢰한다는 것은 그렇게 자연스러운 일은 아닙니다. 그렇기 때문에 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 경험하는 것이 우리가 신뢰하고 받아들이는 능력에 달려 있다면, 우리는 큰 곤경에 처하고 말 것입니다!

하지만 요한1서 4장은 하나님께서 ‘먼저’ 우리를 사랑하셨다고 말합니다 (19절). 우리가 하나님을 사랑할 수 있게 되기 오래 전부터 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셨으며, 우리를 너무 사랑하셔서 우리를 위해 그분의 아들을 기꺼이 희생시키셨습니다. 요한은 놀랍고도 감사한 마음으로 “이것이 사랑”이라고 기록합니다(10절).

하나님은 점진적으로, 부드럽게, 조금씩 우리의 마음을 치유하셔서 그분의 사랑을 받아들이게 하십니다. 하나님의 은혜는 한 방울 한 방울 우리가 두려움을 버리도록 도와줍니다(18절). 한 방울씩 우리 마음에 닿는 그분의 은혜는 어느덧 우리로 그분의 풍성한 아름다움과 사랑의 소나기를 경험하게 해줍니다.

DROP BY DROP

“In everything / we look for pleasant ways of serving God,” writes sixteenth-century believer Teresa of Avila. She poignantly reflects on the many ways we seek to stay in control through easier, more “pleasant” methods than total surrender to God. We tend to slowly, tentatively, and even reluctantly grow to trust Him with all of ourselves. And so, Teresa confesses, “even as we measure out our lives to you / a bit at a time, / we must be content / to receive your gifts drop by drop, / until we have surrendered our lives wholly to you.”

As human beings, trust doesn’t come naturally to many of us. So if experiencing God’s grace and love were dependent on our ability to trust and receive it, we’d be in trouble!

But, as we read in 1 John 4, God’s love for us comes first (V. 19). He loved us long before we could love Him, so much that He was willing to sacrifice His Son for us. “This is love,” John writes in wonder and gratitude (V. 10).

Gradually, gently, little by little, God heals our hearts to receive His love. Drop by drop, His grace helps us surrender our fears (V. 18). Drop by drop, His grace reaches our hearts until we find ourselves experiencing showers of His abundant beauty and love.

하나님께 부르짖음

러셀 무어 박사는 그의 저서 ‘입양의 마음’(Adopted for Life)에서 그의 가족이 한 아이를 입양하기 위해 고아원에 찾아갔을 때의 일을 기술하고 있습니다. 그들이 영아실에 들어갔을 때 놀랄만큼 조용했습니다. 요람에 놓인 아기들이 하나도 울지 않았던 것입니다. 이는 아기들이 필요한 것이 전혀 없었기 때문이 아니라 그 누구도 신경 써 주지 않는다는 것을 배웠기 때문이었습니다.

그 부분을 읽으며 마음이 아팠습니다. 나는 우리 아이들이 어렸을 때의 그 수없이 많은 밤들을 기억합니다. 아내와 나는 잠에 들었다가 “아빠, 나 아파!” 혹은 “엄마, 나 무서워!” 하는 아이들의 소리에 갑자기 깨어나기 일쑤였습니다. 그러면 우리 둘 중 하나는 서둘러 아이들의 방으로 가서 아이들을 안심시키고 돌보기 위해 최선을 다했습니다. 우리가 아이들을 사랑하기에 아이들이 우리에게 도움을 구할 충분한 이유가 있었던 것입니다.

거의 대부분의 시편은 하나님을 향해 울부짖거나 한탄하는 내용으로 이루어져 있습니다. 이스라엘은 하나님과의 개인적인 관계에 근거하여 자신의 애통한 마음을 하나님께로 가져왔습니다. 이들은 하나님이 “장자”(출애굽기 4:22)라고 부른 백성이었고, 하나님 아버지께 그에 맞게 행해 주시기를 요청했습니다. 시편 25편에 그런 솔직한 믿음이 잘 나타나 있습니다. “내게 돌이키사 나에게 은혜를 베푸소서... 나를 고난에서 끌어내소서”(16-17절). 아이들이 울부짖는 것은 사랑으로 돌보아주는 이가 있다는 확신이 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 하나님의 자녀인 우리 신자들에게 그분께 부르짖을 이유를 주셨습니다. 하나님은 그분의 크신 사랑으로 우리에게 귀기울이시고 돌보아 주십니다.

CALLING OUT TO GOD

In his book Adopted for Life, Dr. Russell Moore describes his family’s trip to an orphanage to adopt a child. As they entered the nursery, the silence was startling. The babies in the cribs never cried, and it wasn’t because they never needed anything but because they’d learned that no one cared enough to answer.

My heart ached as I read those words. I remember countless nights when our children were small. My wife and I would be sound asleep only to be startled awake by their cries: “Daddy, I’m sick!” or “Mommy, I’m scared!” One of us would spring into action and make our way to their bedroom to do our best to comfort and care for them. Our love for our children gave them reason to call for our help.

An overwhelming number of the psalms are cries, or laments, to God. Israel brought their laments to Him on the basis of His personal relationship with them. These were a people God had called His “firstborn” (EXODUS 4:22) and they were asking their Father to act accordingly. Such honest trust is seen in Psalm 25: “Turn to me and be gracious to me, . . . free me from my anguish” (VV. 16–17). Children who are confident of the love of a caregiver do cry. As believers in Jesus—children of God—He’s given us reason to call on Him. He hears and cares because of His great love.

보호하시는 하나님의 사랑

어느 여름 밤, 우리집 근처에 있는 새들이 갑자기 정신없이 울어대기 시작했습니다. 새들이 나무에서 날카로운 소리를 내자 그 울부짖는 소리는 더 심해졌습니다. 마침내 그 이유를 알게 되었습니다. 해가 질 때 큰 매가 나무 꼭대기에서 아래쪽으로 내려오며 공격하자 새들이 소리를 지르며 흩어졌는데 위험으로부터 달아나면서 경고음을 낸 것이었습니다.

예를 들면, 우리 인생에서도 거짓 가르침에 대해 조심하라는 영적인 경고가 성경을 통해 들려올 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리가 들은 경고가 맞는지 의심이 될 때도 있습니다. 그러나 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지는 그런 영적인 위험을 분명하게 알려주기 위해 성경에 명확하게 제시해 주셨습니다.

예수님은 “거짓 선지자들을 삼가라 양의 옷을 입고 너희에게 나아오나 속에는 노략질하는 이리라”(마태복음 7:15)라고 가르치시고, 이어서 “그들의 열매로 그들을 알지니... 좋은 나무마다 아름다운 열매를 맺고 못된 나무가 나쁜 열매를 맺는다”고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러고 나서 다시 “그들의 열매로 그들을 알리라”고 우리에게 경고해 주셨습니다(16-17, 20절).

잠언 22장 3절은 우리에게 “슬기로운 자는 재앙을 보면 숨어 피하여도 어리석은 자는 나가다가 해를 받는다”고 상기시켜 줍니다. 그런 경고에는 말씀을 통해 우리에게 드러내신, 보호하시는 하나님의 사랑이 담겨 있습니다.

새들이 신체적 위험에 대해 서로 경고했듯이, 우리 역시 성경의 경고를
주의 깊게 듣고 영적 위험에서 벗어나 피난처인 하나님의 품으로 날아갈 수
있기를 바랍니다.

GOD’S PROTECTIVE LOVE

One summer night, the birds near our home suddenly erupted into chaotic cawing. The squawking intensified as the songbirds sent piercing calls from the trees. We finally realized why. As the sun set, a large hawk swooped from a treetop, sending the birds scattering in a screeching frenzy, sounding the alarm as they flew from danger.

In our lives, spiritual warnings can be heard throughout Scripture—cautions against false teachings, for example. We may doubt that’s what we’re hearing. Because of His love for us, however, our heavenly Father provides the clarity of Scripture to make such spiritual dangers plain to us.

Jesus taught, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves” (MATTHEW 7:15). He continued, “By their fruit you will recognize them. . . . Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” Then He warned us, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (VV. 16–17, 20).

“The prudent see danger and take refuge,” Proverbs 22:3 reminds us, “but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Embedded in such warnings is God’s protective love, revealed in His words to us.

As the birds warned each other of physical danger, may we heed the Bible’s warnings to fly from spiritual danger and into God’s arms of refuge.

발 씻기기... 그리고 접시 닦기

찰리와 잰은 그들의 50회 결혼기념일에 아들 존과 함께 카페에서 아침 식사를 하고 있었습니다. 그날 그 음식점은 일손이 모자라 매니저와 요리사, 그리고 십대 소녀 한 명만이 손님 안내와 주문, 그리고 음식 나르는 일을 하고 있었습니다. 식사를 마친 후 찰리가 아내와 아들에게 “앞으로 몇 시간 내에 해야 할 중요한 일이 있어?”라고 묻자 두 사람 다 아무것도 없다고 했습니다.

그래서 매니저의 허락 하에 찰리와 잰은 식당 뒷편에서 접시를 닦기 시작했고, 존은 어질러진 식탁들을 치웠습니다. 존의 말에 의하면, 그날 일어난 일은 그 가족에게는 그리 특별한 일이 아니었습니다. 존의 부모님은 “섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려”(마가복음 10:45) 오신 예수님을 항상 본으로 삼고 있었던 것입니다.

요한복음 13장에는 예수님이 제자들과 함께 최후의 만찬을 나누는 장면이 나옵니다. 그날 밤 선생이신 예수님은 제자들의 더러운 발을 씻겨주시면서 겸손히 섬기는 것의 원칙을 가르쳐주셨습니다(14-15절). 주님께서 열 두 제자들의 발을 씻기는 천한 일을 기꺼이 하셨다면, 제자들도 또한 기쁜 마음으로 다른 사람들을 섬겨야 합니다.

우리가 하는 모든 봉사가 각각 다르게 보일지는 모르지만, 똑같은 한 가지가 있습니다. 그것은 섬길 때 커다란 기쁨이 따른다는 것입니다. 섬기는 행위에 깔려 있는 목적은 섬기는 사람들이 칭찬을 듣기 위함이 아니라, 다른 사람들을 사랑으로 섬김으로써 겸손하게 자신를 희생하신 하나님께 모든 찬양을 돌려드리기 위함입니다.

WASHING FEET . . . AND DISHES

On Charley and Jan’s fiftieth wedding anniversary, they shared breakfast at a café with their son Jon. That day, the restaurant was understaffed with just a manager, cook, and one teenage girl who was working as hostess, waitress, and busser. As they finished their breakfast, Charley turned to his wife and son and said, “Do you have anything important going on in the next few hours?” They didn’t.

So, with permission from the manager, Charley and Jan began washing dishes in the back of the restaurant while Jon started clearing the cluttered tables. According to Jon, what happened that day wasn’t really that unusual. His parents had always set an example of Jesus who “did not come to be served, but to serve” (MARK 10:45).

In John 13, we read about the last meal Christ shared with His disciples. That night, the Teacher taught them the principle of humble service by washing their dirty feet (VV. 14–15). If He was willing to do the lowly job of washing a dozen men’s feet, they too should joyfully serve others.

Every avenue of service we encounter may look different, but one thing’s the same: there’s great joy in serving. The purpose behind acts of service isn’t to bring praise to the ones performing them, but to lovingly serve others while directing all praise to our humble, self-sacrificing God.

하나님을 따르기로 선택하기

영국 신문 ‘데일리 미러’에 의하면 “보통 사람은 일생 동안 773,618 번의 결정을 한다”고 하며, 이어서 우리는 “그 결정 중 143,262 번을 후회한다”고 합니다. 이 수치가 어떻게 나오게 되었는지는 알 수 없지만, 우리가 일생 동안 수많은 결정을 해야 한다는 것은 분명합니다. 특히 우리의 모든 결정에는 결과가 따르며 어떤 결정은 다른 것보다 훨씬 더 중요하다는 점을 고려해볼 때, 그 결정들의 엄청난 숫자가 우리를 마비시켜버릴지도 모르겠습니다.

사십 년을 광야에서 방황한 후 이스라엘 자손들은 그들이 거할 새로운 땅의 문턱에 와 있었습니다. 나중에 그 땅에 들어간 후 그들의 지도자 여호수아는 그들에게 도전적인 선택을 내어놓았습니다. 여호수아는 “여호와를 경외하고 온전함과 진실함으로 그를 섬기라 너희 조상들이... 섬겼던 신들을 치워 버리라”(여호수아 24:14)고 하면서, “만일 여호와를 섬기는 것이 너희에게 좋지 않게 보이거든... 너희가 섬길 자를 오늘 택하라 오직 나와 내 집은 여호와를 섬기겠노라”(15절)고 말했습니다.

우리가 매일 하루를 시작할 때, 여러 가지 가능성들이 우리 앞에 펼쳐지면서 결정을 내려야 할 수십 가지 일들이 생기게 됩니다. 그럴 때 우리를 인도해 달라고 하나님께 기도하면 결정을 내리는데 도움을 받을 수 있을 것입니다. 성령님의 권능으로 우리는 매일 하나님을 따르는 결정을 내릴 수 있습니다.

CHOOSING TO FOLLOW GOD

“The average person will make 773,618 decisions over a lifetime,” claims the Daily Mirror. The British newspaper goes on to assert that we “will come to regret 143,262 of them.” I have no idea how the paper arrived at these numbers, but it’s clear that we face countless decisions throughout our lifetime. The sheer quantity of them might become paralyzing, especially when we consider that all our choices have consequences, some far more momentous than others.

After forty years wandering in the wilderness, the children of Israel stood at the threshold of their new homeland. Later, after entering the land, Joshua, their leader, issued to them a challenging choice: “Fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness,” he said. “Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped” (JOSHUA 24:14). Joshua told them, “If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve . . . . But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (V. 15).

As we begin each new day, possibilities stretch before us, leading to scores of decisions. Taking the time to ask God to guide us will influence the choices we make. By the power of the Spirit, we can choose to follow Him every day.

실수를 통해 배움

세계 경제를 무너뜨린 1929년과 2008년의 재정적 실수와 같은 일이 미래에 일어나는 것을 방지하기 위해 스코틀랜드의 에딘버러에 ‘실수 도서관’이 설립되었습니다. 이곳에는 차세대 경제학자들의 교육을 돕기 위해 2천 권 이상의 책이 비치되어 있습니다. 이 도서관은 사서들의 말처럼 어떻게 “똑똑한 사람들이 어리석은 일들을 계속 반복하는지” 완벽한 사례를 보여주는 역할을 합니다. 사서들은 튼튼한 경제를 이루는 유일한 길은 과거의 실수로부터 배우는 것이라고 믿고 있습니다.

바울은 유혹에 빠지지 않고 영적으로 강건한 삶을 살 수 있는 한 가지 방법은 과거에 하나님의 백성들이 저질렀던 실수를 통해 배우는 것이라고 고린도 성도들에게 상기시켜 주었습니다. 사도는 그들이 영적으로 누리는 특권으로 교만해지지 않도록 지혜를 얻을 수 있는 사례로 고대 이스라엘의 실패를 한 예로 들었습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 우상을 숭배하고 “음행하였으며” 하나님의 계획과 목적에 대해 불평하고 하나님이 세우신 지도자들에게 반항했습니다. 그런 죄 때문에 그들은 하나님의 징계를 받았습니다(고린도전서 10:7-10). 바울은 예수님을 믿는 이들이 이스라엘의 실수를 반복하지 않도록 돕기 위해 성경에 있는 이런 역사적인 “사례들”을 제시했습니다(11절).

LEARNING FROM MISTAKES

To help avoid future financial mistakes, such as those in 1929 and 2008 that brought down the world’s economy, the Library of Mistakes was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland. It features a collection of more than two thousand books that can help educate the next generation of economists. And it serves as a perfect example of how, according to the library’s curators, “smart people keep doing stupid things.” The curators believe that the only way to build a strong economy is to learn from prior mistakes.

Paul reminded the Corinthians that one way to avoid yielding to temptation and to have a strong spiritual life is to learn from the mistakes of God’s people in the past. So to make sure they wouldn’t become overconfident with their spiritual privilege, the apostle used ancient Israel’s failures as an example from which to gain wisdom. The Israelites engaged in idolatry, chose to “commit sexual immorality,” grumbled about the plans and purposes of God, and rebelled against His leaders. Due to their sin, they experienced His discipline (1 CORINTHIANS 10:7–10). Paul presented these historical “examples” from Scripture to help believers in Jesus avoid repeating Israel’s mistakes (V. 11).

As God helps us, let’s learn from our mistakes and those made by others so that we might gain a heart of obedience for Him.
