기도하는 자세

지미는 오랜 시간 만성 질환과 싸우며 지쳐 있었습니다. 매일 아침 기도하고 말씀을 묵상하며 하나님과 시간을 보내고 싶었지만, 도무지 통증 없이 의자에 앉을 수 있는 방법이 없었습니다. 이쪽저쪽으로 몸을 움직여 봐도 통증은 가시지 않았습니다. 끝내는 포기하고 무릎을 꿇었습니다. 그러자 그 기도 자세가 괴로운 통증을 덜어주었습니다. 그 날 이후로 지미는 무릎을 꿇고 하나님께 부르짖는 기도를 드리게 되었고 그 가운데 평안을 누렸습니다.

유다 왕 여호사밧은 통증이 아닌 위협하는 적들과의 전쟁을 마주했습니다 (역대하 20:1-2). 왕은 “두려워하여 여호와께로 낯을 향하여 간구했습니다” (3절). 유다의 모든 백성들도 “여호와께 도우심을 구하려” 기도했습니다(4절). 하나님은 그들의 기도를 들으시고 하나님의 영이 레위 사람 야하시엘에게 임하여 이 같은 위로의 말씀을 왕에게 전하게 했습니다: “너희는... 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라... 여호와가 너희와 함께 하리라”(15, 17절). 여호사밧이 “몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대니” 모두 “여호와 앞에 엎드려 여호와께 경배하였습니다”(18절).

우리는 고통스럽고 힘들 때에 종종 하나님의 임재를 더욱 강력하게 경험합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 그분의 뜻에 순종하며 진심으로 기도하는 자세로 살아갈 때 우리는 주 안에서 위로와 평안을 찾을 수 있습니다.

A PRAYERFUL POSTURE

A lengthy battle with a chronic illness had taken its toll on Jimmy. Though he desired to spend time with God each morning, praying to Him and meditating on the Scriptures, he couldn’t find a way to position his body in his chair that wasn’t painful. He shifted from side to side, but there was no relief. Finally, in desperation, he fell to his knees. As he did, that prayerful posture proved to lessen the agonizing ache. In the mornings that followed, Jimmy spent time with God on his knees—experiencing comfort even as he called out to Him in prayer.

Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, also faced a battle—not with pain but with threatening enemies (2 CHRONICLES 20:1-2). The king was “terrified by this news and begged the Lord for guidance” (V. 3 NLT). All the people of Judah sought “help from the Lord” as well (V. 4). God heard their prayers, and His Spirit came upon a Levite named Jahaziel, who delivered this comforting message to the king: “Do not be afraid or discouraged . . . . The Lord will be with you” (VV. 15, 17). Jehoshaphat “bowed down with his face to the ground” and everyone “fell down in worship before the Lord” (V. 18).

In painful and challenging times, we can often experience God’s nearness in a powerful way. As He helps us submit to His will and live out a prayerful posture in our hearts, we can find comfort and peace in Him.

하나님의 길은 사랑입니다

나는 시간 여유가 생겨 다가오는 몇 달 동안 힘이 닿는 한 사람들을 섬기는 일에 집중하려고 계획했습니다. 그러나 새 친구를 돕다가 넘어져 팔이 세 군데나 부러지는 바람에 갑자기 내가 도움이 필요한 사람이 되었습니다. 성도들이 문병을 오고, 상품권과 꽃, 전화, 문자, 기도, 음식(초콜릿 한 상자까지), 그리고 일 심부름 등으로 나를 돌보아주었습니다. 나의 가족과 친구들, 그리고 동료 교인들은 너무나 친절했습니다! 마치 하나님께서 “그냥 앉아있어. 넌 도움이 필요해. 돌봄이 어떤 것인지 보여줄게”라고 말씀하시는 것 같았습니다. 나는 그들 덕분에 마음을 다해 섬기는 것과, 사람들로 인해 하나님께 감사하는 마음이 어떤 것인지 더 잘 알게 되었습니다.

동료 교인들은 바울이 로마에 있는 성도들에게 권면한 그대로(로마서 12) 나를 정성껏 도왔습니다. 바울은 그들에게 신실하게 사랑하고, 서로 우애하고 존경하며, 성도들의 필요를 공급하는 등, 여러 면으로 권면했습니다(9-13절). 바울은 그의 서신 전체를 통해 그들에게 교리를 가르쳤지만, 동시에 그리스도 안에 있는 생명은 추상적인 신학이 아니라 우리가 매일 살아가는 현실의 삶으로 나타난다는 것도 가르쳤습니다(12-16장). 하나님의 길은 사랑입니다. 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 표현하는 여러 방법 중 하나는 그분께 받은 사랑을 다시 다른 사람들에게 부어주는 것입니다.

우리가 매일 교회나 지역의 사람들을 도울 방법을 찾아 행할 때, 그들은 격려를 받고 우리는 축복을 받으며 하나님은 찬양을 받으실 것입니다.

GOD’S WAY IS LOVE

With extra time on my hands, my plan for the coming months centered on serving people as much as I could. But while helping a new friend, I tripped and fell and broke my arm in three places. Suddenly I was the one in need. God’s people cared for me with visits, gift cards, flowers, phone calls, texts, prayers, meals (and even a box of chocolates), and by running errands. I couldn’t believe how kind my family, friends, and fellow church members were! It was as if God were saying, “Sit down. You need help. You’ll see what caring looks like.” Because of them, I know more about serving from the heart and feeling grateful to God for others.

Fellow believers eagerly helped me in the ways Paul instructed the church members living in Rome to follow (ROMANS 12). He encouraged them in many ways, including to love sincerely, to be devoted to one another in love, to honor others, and to share with those in need (VV. 9-13). Paul taught them doctrine throughout his letter. But he also shared that life in Christ isn’t abstract theology—it’s shown in our practical daily living (CHS. 12-16). God’s way is love. Receiving and then pouring out His love on others is one of many ways to express His love for us.

As we look for and find everyday ways to serve people in our churches or communities, they’ll be encouraged, we’ll be blessed, and God will be praised.

데이비드 어탈은 내비게이션을 연구하는 인지 과학자인데 정작 본인은 지리적으로 어떤 장소를 찾아가는데 어려움이 있습니다. 이것은 그에게 있어 새로운 문제가 아닙니다. 그 문제는 그가 등산로에서 이틀 반 동안이나 길을 잃고 헤맸던 열세 살 때까지 거슬러 올라갑니다. 어탈은 지금도 살면서 간단한 방향도 잘 찾지 못한다고 말합니다. 그러나 방향 감각을 타고난 사람들도 있습니다. 그들은 자신이 지금 있는 곳과 원하는 곳으로 가는 길을 정확히 압니다. 반대로 어탈과 같은 사람들은 가야 할 방향을 정확히 알면서도 종종 길을 잃습니다.

우리가 하나님의 보호에서 벗어날 때 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님은 우리를 찾아 다시 그분께로 이끌어 가십니다. 우리가 성경을 이해하고 “주의 모든 계명들”(172절)을 따르도록 하나님이 도와주실 때 우리는 영적으로 길을 잃지 않을 수 있습니다.

PURSUED BY GOD

David Uttal is a cognitive scientist who studies navigation but has problems navigating his way around geographic locations. This isn’t a new problem for him—one that goes back to when he was thirteen years old and got lost for two and a half days on a hike. Uttal admits he’s still terrible with simple directions in life. But some people are natural navigators—knowing exactly where they are and how to get where they desire to go. Others, like Uttal, struggle even with clear directions and often get lost.

The psalmist also felt the disorientation of lostness: “I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands” (PSALM 119:176). He compared himself to a wandering sheep. Although sheep can be valuable creatures, they’re also notoriously rebellious and will sometimes drift away from their shepherd—putting them in need of rescue. The psalmist’s spiritual navigation skills had deteriorated, and his spiritual sense of direction had faded, so he needed God to pursue him and give him a “discerning mind” (V. 169 NLT).

When we wander away from God’s care, He loves us enough to seek us and lead us back to Himself. As He helps us understand the Scriptures and follow “all [His] commands” (V. 172), we can avoid getting spiritually lost.

그리스도의 빛 가운데 걷기

조카 둘이 어릴 때, 저녁식사 후에는 나에게 함께 놀자고 조르곤 했습니다. 집에 있는 불을 다 끄고 어둠 속을 더듬거리며 다니며 서로를 붙잡으면 까르르 웃음을 터트리곤 했습니다. 어둠 속을 걸으며 서로 겁도 주고 즐길 수 있었던 것은 언제나 원하면 다시 불을 켤 수 있었기 때문입니다.

요한 사도는 초대교회 신자들에게 쓴 서신에서 이와는 다른 종류의 어둠 속을 걷는 것을 이야기했습니다. 요한1서 1장 6절은 죄를 “어둠”이라고 말합니다. 어둠 가운데 걷는 것은 잠깐의 실수가 아니라 계속 잘못된 길을 선택 하는 것을 말합니다. 요한은 “하나님은 빛이시라 그에게는 어두움이 조금도 없으시다”(5절)고 했습니다. 그래서 우리가 하나님과 사귐이 있다 하고 죄에 거하면 “거짓말을 하고 진리를 행하지 아니함”(6절)이라 했습니다. 예수님은 이 세상에 빛으로 오셔서 “나를 따르는 자는 어두움에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”(요한복음 8:12)고 하셨습니다.

우리는 하나님의 은혜로 영적 어둠 속에서 방황하다가도 회개하여 하나님께 돌아갈 때에 다시 그분의 빛 가운데 걸으며 하나님의 길과 뜻을 따라 살아갈 수 있습니다. 하나님은 “우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것”입니다(요한1서 1:9). 우리는 오직 하나님께 순종하며 살아갈 때에만 그분과, 그리고 다른 성도들과의 관계 가운데 풍성한 축복을 누릴 수 있습니다(7절).

WALKING IN CHRIST’S LIGHT

When my two nieces were younger, they’d coax me into a game after dinner. They’d turn off all the lights in the house, and we’d shuffle through the darkness, clutching each other and laughing. They enjoyed scaring themselves by choosing to walk in the dark, knowing they could turn on the light anytime.

In his letter to the early believers in Jesus, the apostle John talked about choosing to walk in a different kind of darkness. First John 1:6 refers to sin as “darkness.” Walking in darkness isn’t a momentary lapse but a choice to keep engaging in wrongdoing. John reminds us that our holy God “is light” and “in him there is no darkness” (V. 5). So when we claim a relationship with Him yet willfully continue sinning, “we lie and do not live out the truth” (V. 6). Jesus, the light of the world, came so that “whoever follows [Him] will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (JOHN 8:12).

By God’s grace, after we’ve wandered in spiritual darkness and we turn to Him in repentance, we can walk in His light again— in His ways and purposes. He will “forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:9). Only when we live in obedience to God can we enjoy the full blessing of relationship with Him and with other believers (V. 7).

혼자서는 할 수 없습니다

자메이카의 던스리버 폭포에 오르는 것은 신나는 경험입니다. 폭포의 미끄러운 바위 위로 물이 쏟아져 카리브해로 흘러갑니다. 물을 거슬러 올라가 정상에 이르는 것은 등반가들에게 매우 힘들었고, 십 대의 JW 에게는 거의 불가능한 일이었습니다. 그는 시력 장애로 세상을 바늘 구멍만큼만 볼 수 있었기 때문입니다.

그러나 JW는 등반하려는 마음을 굳게 먹고, 그의 친구 요시아는 기꺼이 그와 함께 하기로 했습니다. 요시야는 JW의 눈이 되어 어떤 미끄러운 바위를 피해야 하는지, 어디에 손과 발을 짚어야 하는지를 알려주었고, JW는 요시아의 마음이 되어 참된 용기가 어떤 것인지를 보여주었습니다.

우리의 삶도 그처럼 힘겨운 등반과 같습니다. 우리는 혼자 걸어가서는 안 됩니다. 솔로몬 왕은 우리에게 그 진리를 가르쳐줍니다. “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라”(전도서 4:9). 요시야와 JW 는 둘 다 특별한 것을 시도했고 그것은 함께 해야만 해 낼 수 있는 일이었습니다. 성경 말씀은 이어집니다. “혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와 홀로 있어 넘어지고 붙들어 일으킬 자가 없는 자에게는 화가 있으리라”(10절). 그들은 둘 다 넘어지거나 실패하지 않았습니다. 둘이 함께 목표를 이루었습니다.

솔로몬이 명확히 알려주었고 또 이 두 십대 소년이 생생히 보여준 것처럼, 하나님은 우리가 함께 일하도록 계획하셨습니다. 하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 일들을 가장 잘 하는 방법은 다른 사람들과 더불어 각 사람이 하나님이 주신 기술과 감정을 모두 사용하여 하나님을 드러내는 결과를 만들어내는 것입니다.

IT TAKES TWO

Climbing Jamaica’s Dunn’s River Falls is an exhilarating experience. Water cascades over the smooth rocks of the falls on its way to the Caribbean. It’s a challenge as climbers battle the water’s flow to make their way to the top. For a teenager named JW, it’s a near impossibility. He’s sight-impaired, with only a pinhole view of the world.

But JW was determined to climb, and his friend Josiah was willing to team up with him. Josiah was JW’s eyes—telling him which slippery rocks to avoid and where to put his hands and feet. And JW was Josiah’s heart—showing him what courage looks like.

So much of life is like that daunting climb: We shouldn’t walk alone. King Solomon points us to that truth. “Two people are better than one, for they can help each other succeed” (Ecclesiastes 4:9 nlt). Both Josiah and JW were attempting something special—and they could do it only in tandem. The passage continues: “If either [person] falls down, one can help the other up” (V. 10). But neither fell and neither failed. Together, they reached their goals.

God’s design for people, presented clearly by Solomon and demonstrated vividly by these two teenagers, is that we work together. The tasks God calls us to do are best done with others— each using what skills and emotions God has given to bring an outcome that points to Him.

하나님께 감사하는 마음

캐나다와 세인트 루시아 섬에서는 10월에 추수감사절을 기념합니다. 라이베리아는 11월 초에 감사의 날을 정하고, 미국과 호주는 11월 말에 연례 추수감사절을 지킵니다. 영국, 브라질, 르완다, 필리핀을 포함한 다른 나라에서는 공휴일은 아니라도 감사의 날로 정하고 있습니다.

국가적으로 감사를 표현하는 것은 큰 의미가 있습니다. 이것은 다윗 왕이 이스라엘 백성을 모아 하나님의 임재와 보호와 약속에 감사를 올려드렸던 모습에 나타나 있습니다. 이 축하 행사는 “하나님의 궤”가 돌아온 것을 기념하기 위한 것이었습니다(역대상 16:1). 사람들은 하나님의 임재의 상징인 언약궤가 예루살렘에 있다는 것을 기뻐했습니다. 다윗은 이스라엘 백성들을 찬양으로 인도하면서 이스라엘이 가나안 땅을 정복했을 때에 하나님이 보호해 주신 것을 상기하면서(18-22절) 약속을 이루신 하나님의 신실함을 기념했습니다(15절).

GRATITUDE TO GOD

Canada and the island of Saint Lucia celebrate a Thanksgiving holiday in October. Liberia sets aside a day for giving thanks at the beginning of November, while the United States and Australia mark the annual holiday at the end of the month. Other countries, including the United Kingdom, Brazil, Rwanda, and the Philippines, have unofficial days to foster gratitude.

There’s something powerful about a nation collectively expressing gratitude. It’s a picture we see when King David assembled the nation of Israel to give thanks to God for His presence, protection, and promises. The celebration marked the return of the “ark of God” (1 CHRONICLES 16:1). The people rejoiced that the ark, a symbol of God’s presence with them, was in Jerusalem. As David led Israel in praise, he reminded them of God’s protection as the nation conquered the land of Canaan (VV. 18-22) and celebrated His faithfulness to fulfill His promises (V. 15).

If you celebrate a Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family, consider making it a gratitude gathering and reflecting together on the ways you’ve experienced God’s presence, protection, and promises over the past year. Whether or not you live in a country that officially celebrates Thanksgiving, each of us can take time to “give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (V. 34).

COMMUNION WITH GOD

In his book Man of Honor, Ray Pritchard shares the story of his stroll in a cemetery where he discovered a man’s grave marker with a wordy tribute. But he then describes a more eyecatching epitaph on the gravestone of the man’s son: “A man of unquestioned integrity.” As Pritchard wrote: “Five words to sum up an entire life. Sixty-plus years distilled into five words. But, oh what truth they tell.”

In Psalm 15:1, we find questions asking after a certain kind of person: “Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?” (V. 1 NLT). The answer involves integrity and is captured in the word blameless found in verse 2: “Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts” (V. 2 NLT). The question (V. 1) and answer (V. 2) combination refers to communion with God. The rest of the psalm summarizes—in positive and negative terms—what a God-honoring life looks like.

When we have intimate communion with God, it’s displayed in a life of integrity, particularly in how we treat others as the Spirit helps us (SEE MATTHEW 22:34-40; 1 JOHN 3:16-18). It’s the posture of life that we assume when we believe in and follow Jesus—the one who lived in perfect communion with His Father.

그리스도로 통한다

젊은 기자 시절 나는 “언론인 출입증”이 얼마나 힘이 큰지 일찍 알았습니다. 나의 이름과 사진과 소속 언론사를 보여주는 그 증명서 하나만 있으면 큰 행사 전후에 운동선수들이나 유명인사들을 만나 인터뷰를 할 수 있었기 때문입니다.

그러나 예수님을 나의 구주로 영접하고는 스포츠와 직업이 내 삶의 우상이 된 것을 깨달았습니다. 나는 하나님의 부르심을 따라 다른 길을 택하게 되면서 언론인 출입증을 반납해야 했습니다. 그대신 예수님의 대속의 죽음과 부활 덕분에 기도를 통해 하나님의 하늘 보좌에 나아갈 수 있는 특권을 얻었습니다.

히브리서의 저자는 이스라엘 백성 가운데 대제사장이 선택되었으며, 특별히 아론의 후손 중에서 하나님 앞에서 백성을 대표하는 중재자로 임명되었다고 말합니다. 대제사장은 일 년에 한 번 홀로 성소 안의 지성소에 들어가 “예물과 제사를 드려” 자신의 죄와 백성들의 죄를 속죄해야 했습니다(5:1). 그도 역시 죽을 수 밖에 없는 한 인간이었기 때문입니다.

그러나 우리의 위대하고 완전한 대제사장 예수님이 오셨습니다. 그분이 돌아가시면서 성전의 휘장이 찢어져 하나님과 인간 사이에 있던 장벽이 제거 됐습니다(마태복음 27:51).

우리 사랑의 구세주께서 우리를 하나님 아버지와 화목하게 하심으로 우리는 자유롭게 하나님께 기도할 수 있습니다. “그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라”(히브리서 4:16).

기도를 통해 하나님과 대화할 때 그의 보좌로 나아갈 수 있는 것이 얼마나 큰 특권인지 모릅니다.

ACCESS THROUGH CHRIST

As a young journalist, I quickly learned about the power of a “press pass.” That one credential—displaying my name, picture, and media outlet—granted me access to meet and interview athletes and celebrities before or after major events.

However, after I received Jesus as my Savior, I realized sports and my career had become my idols. Following God’s call elsewhere, I lost my press pass but gained access to God’s heavenly throne room through prayer because of Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection.

The writer of Hebrews points out that a high priest was selected from among the Israelites, specifically one of Aaron’s descendants, and appointed as the go-between representing the people before God. He alone could enter the Most Holy Place in the temple once a year “to offer gifts and sacrifice” to atone for his and the people’s sins (5:1), for he too was a mortal man.

Then Christ came, our great and perfect high priest. When He died, the veil in the temple was torn and the barrier that existed between God and humanity was removed (MATTHEW 27:51).

Because our loving Redeemer has reconciled us to His Father, we can freely pray to God: “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (HEBREWS 4:16).

What a privilege to have access to God’s throne room as we talk to Him in prayer.

절박한 사람의 기도

찰스는 우울증에 빠졌습니다. 사랑하는 가족이 있어도 외로웠습니다. 그는 “가족 부양의 압박감이 계속 커지면서 죽고 싶다는 생각까지 들었다” 고 했습니다. 믿기 어렵겠지만 찰스 모리스는 기독교 목회자였습니다. 한 지혜 많은 친구가 그에게 이렇게 조언했습니다. “우울증이 찾아오면 시편을 깊이 묵상해야 해.” 찰스는 자신의 감정을 그대로 담은 듯한 성경 말씀을 읽고서 적절한 치료를 받으며 하나님께 마음을 쏟아 놓으면서 깊은 절망에서 벗어날 수 있었습니다.

시편은 종종 잔인할 정도로 솔직합니다. 에스라 사람 헤만은 그 중에서도 가장 쓰라린 고통을 적었습니다. “여호와 내 구원의 하나님이여”(88:1) 하며 첫 구절에만 희망을 담았을 뿐, 이후 헤만은 하나님을 원망하듯 외칩니다. “주께서 나를 깊은 웅덩이에 던지셨습니다”(6절). “주께서 나를 괴롭게 하셨습니다”(7절). 그리고 그는 묻습니다. “여호와여 어찌하여 나의 영혼을 버리시며 어찌하여 주의 얼굴을 내게서 숨기시나이까?”(14절). 대부분의 시편은 희망의 메시지로 끝나지만 이 장은 그렇지 않습니다. 헤만은 이렇게 마칩니다. “내가 아는 자를 흑암에 두셨나이다”(18절). 이것이야말로 절박한 사람의 기도입니다. 그러나 헤만은 모든 아픔을 하나님께 직접 쏟아놓았습니다.

PRAYER OF THE DESPERATE

Charles had sunk into depression. Despite having a loving family, he felt all alone. “The overwhelming pressure of supporting them was continuing to build,” he said, “and I felt like taking my own life.” Surprisingly—or perhaps not—Charles Morris also led a Christian ministry.

A wise friend told him that when faced with depression, “We should soak in the Psalms.” Charles got through his deep despondency by reading relatable Bible passages, accepting prudent medical care, and pouring his heart out to God.

The Psalms are often brutally honest. Heman the Ezrahite wrote one of the most bitter. Hope is found only in the opening lines: “Lord, you are the God who saves me” (88:1). Heman seems to accuse God: “You have put me in the lowest pit” (V. 6). “You have overwhelmed me” (V. 7). And he had questions: “Why, Lord, do you reject me and hide your face from me?” (V. 14). Most psalms end with a message of hope. Not this one. Heman concludes, “Darkness is my closest friend” (V. 18). This is the prayer of a truly desperate man. Yet Heman directed all his pain to God.

When we read psalms such as this one, we realize we’re not alone. Others have experienced desperate feelings and have dared to put voice to them. God could take such honesty from Heman. He can take it from you too. He’s there, and He’s listening.

교훈적인 이야기

고전 영화 ‘시민 케인’에서 찰스 포스터 케인은 언론 재벌을 이루어 부와 권력을 쌓았습니다. 전도서 2:4-11을 회상하게 하는 이 이야기에서 케인은 온갖 예술 작품으로 가득한 거대한 정원이 있는 저택을 지으며 모든 쾌락을 누렸습니다.

다른 재벌들과 마찬가지로, 케인이 진정 원했던 것은 높임을 받는 것 이었습니다. 그는 자신의 정치 활동에 막대한 돈을 쏟아 부었지만 선거에 패배 하자, 체면을 세우려고 낙선을 “부정 선거” 탓으로 돌렸습니다. 또한 남들에게 멋지게 보이려고 아내에게 오페라 극장을 지어주고 아내에게 맞지도 않는 성악가의 길을 걷게 했습니다. 케인의 이런 일대기도 부를 쫓고 소유하는 사람은 해를 당하고(9:10-15), “일평생을 어두운 데에서 먹으며 많은 근심”(5:17) 속에 살게 된다는 전도서와 상통합니다. 결국 찰스 케인은 자신의 성에서 주위에 아무도 없이 외롭게, 분노 속에 생을 마감합니다.

영화 ‘시민 케인’은 찰스의 모든 욕망이 어린 시절 받지 못한 부모의 사랑 에서 비롯되었음을 드러내며 끝이 납니다. 아마도 전도서의 저자 역시 이에 공감할 것 같습니다. 하나님께서는 우리의 마음 속에 “영원을 사모하는 마음”을 두셨으며(3:11), 삶의 참된 기쁨은 오직 하나님과 함께할 때에만 누릴 수 있습니다 (2:25). 찰스 케인의 이야기는 영적 만족을 부와 권력에서 찾지 말고, 우리의 마음에 사랑을 부어 주시는 하나님으로부터 찾으라는 교훈을 줍니다(로마서 5:5).

A CAUTIONARY TALE

In the classic film Citizen Kane, Charles Foster Kane amasses wealth and power by building a newspaper empire. In a story reminiscent of Ecclesiastes 2:4-11, Kane spares himself no pleasure, building a castle with grand gardens full of artistic treasures.

Like other tycoons, what Kane really wants is adulation. He bankrolls his own political career and, when it fails, he blames the defeat on voter “fraud” to save face. He builds his wife an opera house and forces her into an ill-suited singing career to make him look good. Here too Kane’s story echoes Ecclesiastes, where wealth is found to harm those who chase and horde it (9:10-15), leaving them eating “in darkness, with great frustration” (5:17). By the end of his life, Charlie Kane lives in that castle alone, isolated and angry.

Citizen Kane ends with the revelation that Charlie’s pursuits have been driven to fill a void in his heart—the parental love he lost as a child. I can imagine the author of Ecclesiastes agreeing. Our Father God has “set eternity in the human heart” (3:11), and life can only be enjoyed with Him (2:25). Charlie Kane’s cautionary tale speaks to us all: Don’t seek spiritual fulfilment through wealth and power, but through the one who pours His love into our hearts (ROMANS 5:5).
