다르지만 예수 안에서 함께

비지니스 분석가 프랜시스 에반스는 125명의 보험 영업사원들을 만나 그들의 성공 요인을 조사해본 적이 있습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 개개인의 능력이 성공 요인이 아니었습니다. 그것보다는, 고객들은 자신과 같은 정치적 견해나 교육수준, 심지어 비슷한 키의 영업사원들에게 보험을 가입하려는 경향이 있다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 학자들은 이것을 우리와 비슷한 사람들을 선호하는 경향, 곧 “동종선호”라는 말로 부릅니다.

동종선호는 우리와 비슷한 사람과 결혼하고 친구를 사귀는 등, 삶의 다른 영역에서도 작용합니다. 아무런 억제 없이 동종선호를 그대로 받아들일 때 자연스러운 면도 있지만 파괴적이 될 수도 있습니다. 우리가 “같은 류”의 사람들만 선호할 때 사회는 인종이나 정치나 경제적인 노선에 따라 분열될 수 있습니다.

초대교회 시절 유대인은 유대인끼리, 헬라인은 헬라인끼리 어울렸고, 부자와 가난한 사람들은 전혀 어울리지 않았습니다. 하지만 바울은 로마서 16:1-16에서 로마 교회를 설명하면서 브리스가와 아굴라(유대인), 에배네도 (헬라인), 뵈뵈(“여러 사람의 보호자,” 그래서 아마도 부유한 자), 그리고 빌롤로고(노예들에게 흔했던 이름)와 같은 이름을 열거하였습니다. 무엇이 그렇게 다른 사람들을 한 데 모았을까요? 바로 ‘예수님’입니다. 그분 안에는 “유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나” 차별이 없습니다(갈라디아서 3:28).

자신과 비슷한 사람들과 어울려 살고, 일하고, 같은 교회에 다니기 원하는 것은 자연스러운 일입니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리에게 그 선을 넘으라고 강권하십니다. 다양한 노선에 따라 갈라진 세상 속에서 예수님은 서로 다른 우리를 함께 모아 주님 안에서 한 가족으로 하나 되게 하십니다.

DIFFERENT TOGETHER IN JESUS

Business analyst Francis Evans once studied 125 insurance salesmen to find out what made them successful. Surprisingly, competence wasn’t the key factor. Instead, Evans found customers were more likely to buy from salesmen with the same politics, education, and even height as them. Scholars call this homophily: the tendency to prefer people like us.

Homophily is at work in other areas of life too, with us tending to marry and befriend people similar to us. While natural, homophily can be destructive when left unchecked. When we only prefer “our kind” of people, society can fracture along racial, political, and economic lines.

In the first century, Jews stuck with Jews, Greeks with Greeks, and rich and poor never mingled. And yet, in Romans 16:1–16, Paul could describe the church in Rome as including Priscilla and Aquila (Jewish), Epenetus (Greek), Phoebe (a “benefactor of many,” so probably wealthy), and Philologus (a name common for slaves). What had brought such different people together? Jesus—in whom there’s “neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free” (GALATIANS 3:28).

It’s natural to want to live, work, and go to church with people like us. Jesus pushes us beyond that. In a world fracturing along various lines, He’s making us a people who are different together— united in Him as one family.

수많은 빛나는 점들

앨라바마주 북서쪽에 위치한 디즈멀스 협곡에는 각다귀 애벌레가 알을 까고 나와 반딧불이가 되는 5월과 6월에 매년 수많은 관광객들이 찾아옵니다. 밤중에 수천 마리의 반딧불들이 한데 모여 찬란한 푸른 빛을 발하면 숨막히는 빛의 향연이 벌어집니다.

어떤 면에서 바울 사도는 그리스도를 믿는 신자들이 마치 반딧불과 같다고 말하고 있습니다. 그는 “너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라”(에베소서 5:8)고 말합니다. 그러나 때로 우리는 “이렇게 보잘것없는 내 빛”이 어떤 변화를 가져올 수 있을까 의문을 갖습니다. 바울은 그것이 단 한 사람의 행동으로 되는 것이 아니라고 하면서, 우리를 “빛의 자녀들”이라고 부르며(8절) 우리는 “빛의 나라에서 성도들이 얻을 축복에 참여하게” 된다고 설명합니다(골로새서 1:12, 현대인의 성경). 세상에 빛을 발하는 것은 그리스도의 몸인 교회의 사역, 곧 공동의 노력으로 되는 것입니다. 바울은 우리 “반딧불” 들이 함께 모여 예배하면서 “시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로 화답하는” (에베소서 5:19) 모습을 묘사하면서 이 사실을 강조하고 있습니다.

A THOUSAND DOTS OF LIGHT

The Dismals Canyon in northwestern Alabama attracts a number of tourists each year, many in May and June when the gnat larvae hatch and become glowworms. At night, these glowworms cast a brilliant blue luminescence, and thousands of them together create a breathtaking light.

In a way, the apostle Paul writes about believers in Christ as glowworms. He explains that “you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord” (EPHESIANS 5:8). But sometimes we wonder how “this little light of mine” can make a difference. Paul suggests it isn’t just a solo act. He calls us “children of light” (V. 8) and explains that we “share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light” (COLOSSIANS 1:12). Being light in the world is a collective effort, the work of the body of Christ, the work of the church. Paul reinforces this with the picture of us “glowworms” worshiping together, “speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit” (EPHESIANS 5:19).

When we get discouraged, thinking our life testimony is just one little dot in a midnight culture of pitch black, we might take assurance from the Bible. We’re not alone. Together, as God guides us, we make a difference and glow a brilliant light. It seems that a whole congregation of glowworms might attract a whole lot of interest.

노예 생활에서 벗어남

“우리를 노예 생활에서 벗어나게 해주신 선생님은 마치 모세 같아요!” 자밀라가 감격해 외쳤습니다. 파키스탄에서 벽돌 가마 노동자로 노예처럼 살던 그녀와 그 가족들은 가마 주인에게 큰 빚을 지고 어렵게 살고 있었습니다. 수입의 대부분을 이자를 갚는데 썼던 그들이 한 비영리기관으로부터 그 빚을 갚을 수 있는 도움을 받고는 엄청난 안도감을 느꼈습니다. 예수님을 믿는 자밀라는 빚을 갚아준 기관 대표에게 감사의 말을 하면서 하나님께서 모세와 이스라엘 백성들을 노예 생활로부터 해방시키신 일을 언급한 것입니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 수백 년 동안 처참한 환경 가운데 노역을 하며 애굽 사람들의 억압을 받아왔습니다. 그들은 탄식하며 하나님께 도와달라고 부르짖었습니다(출애굽기 2:23). 그러나 새로 즉위한 바로는 벽돌을 만드는 것뿐 아니라 벽돌에 쓸 짚도 줍도록 명령을 내려 그들의 작업량을 더 늘렸습니다(5:6- 8). 이런 억압에 이스라엘 백성들이 계속 부르짖자 하나님은 그들의 하나님이 되신다는 언약을 다시 확인시켜 주셨습니다(6:7). 그리고 하나님께서 “편 팔” 로 그들을 건져내실 것이므로 그들이 더 이상 노예로 남지 않을 것이라고 하셨습니다(6절).

하나님의 인도 하에 모세는 이스라엘 백성들을 애굽에서 이끌어냈습니다 (14장 참조). 오늘날에도 하나님은 십자가 위의 그의 아들 예수님의 편 팔을 통해 여전히 우리를 구원하십니다. 과거 우리를 지배하던 훨씬 더 큰 죄의 속박으로부터 우리는 자유롭게 되었습니다. 우리는 더 이상 노예가 아니며 자유합니다!

RELEASE FROM SLAVERY

“You are like Moses, leading us out from slavery!” Jamila exclaimed. As a bonded brick-kiln worker in Pakistan, she and her family suffered because of the exorbitant amount they owed the kiln owner. They used much of their earnings just to pay off the interest. But when they received a gift from a nonprofit agency that released them from their debt, they felt tremendous relief. In thanking the agency’s representative for their freedom, Jamila, a believer in Jesus, pointed to the example of God’s release of Moses and the Israelites from slavery.

The Israelites had been oppressed by the Egyptians for hundreds of years, laboring under harsh conditions. They cried out to God, asking for help (EXODUS 2:23). But their workload increased, because the new pharaoh ordered them not only to make bricks but also to gather the straw for these bricks (5:6–8). When the Israelites continued to cry out against the oppression, God reiterated His promise to be their God (6:7). No longer would they be slaves, because He would redeem them with “an outstretched arm” (V. 6).

Under God’s direction, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt (SEE CH. 14). Today God still delivers us through the outstretched arms of His Son, Jesus, on the cross. We’re set free from a far greater enslavement to the sin that once controlled us. We’re no longer slaves, but free!

하나님의 임재가 먼저

2009년에 스탠포드 대학의 한 연구팀이 200명이 넘는 학생들을 대상으로 일들을 계속 바꾸어 가며 일하게 하면서 기억력을 실험해보는 연구를 했습니다. 그 연구는 놀랍게도 몇 가지 일을 동시에 하는 버릇이 있어서 유능한 멀티태스커라고 자칭하는 사람들이 한 번에 한 가지 일만 하는 것을 선호하는 사람들보다 기억력 실험 결과가 좋지 않다는 것을 보여주었습니다. 동시에 여러 가지 일을 하는 사람들은 자신의 생각에 집중하거나 상관이 없는 정보를 걸러내는 데에 더 어려움을 느꼈습니다. 마음이 산만할 때에는 집중하는 것이 쉽지 않습니다.

예수님이 마리아와 마르다의 집을 방문하셨을 때 마르다는 일하느라 바빴고 “준비하는 일이 많아 마음이 분주했습니다”(누가복음 10:40). 그러나 동생 마리아는 앉아서 예수님의 가르침을 들으며 아무도 빼앗을 수 없는 지혜와 평안을 얻는 쪽을 택했습니다(39-42절). 마르다가 예수님께 나아가 동생에게 말하여 자기 일을 돕게 해달라고 하자, 예수님은 “네가 많은 일로 염려하고 근심하나 몇 가지만 하든지 혹은 한 가지만이라도 족하니라”고 대답하셨습니다(41-42절).

하나님은 우리가 집중하기를 원하시는데 우리는 마르다처럼 여러 가지 일과 근심으로 마음이 분주할 때가 많습니다. 유일하게 우리에게 필요한 지혜와 소망을 주시는 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 사실을 우리가 소홀히 여기는 것입니다. 우리가 기도와 말씀 묵상으로 하나님과 함께하는 시간을 최우선으로 할 때, 하나님은 우리가 마주한 문제들을 헤쳐나갈 수 있도록 우리를 인도하시고 힘을 주실 것입니다.

PRIORITY OF GOD’S PRESENCE

In 2009, a research team at Stanford University studied more than two hundred students in an experiment that included switching between tasks and memory exercises. Surprisingly, the study found that students who viewed themselves as good multitaskers because they were in the habit of doing several things at a time, did worse than those who preferred to perform one task at a time. Multitasking made it more difficult to focus their thoughts and filter irrelevant information. Maintaining focus when our minds are distracted can be a challenge.

When Jesus visited Mary and Martha’s home, Martha was busy working and “distracted by all the preparations” (LUKE 10:40). Her sister Mary chose to sit and listen to Jesus teach, gaining wisdom and peace that would never be taken away from her (VV. 39–42). When Martha asked Jesus to encourage Mary to help her, He responded, “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one” (VV. 41–42).

God desires our attention. But, like Martha, we’re often distracted by tasks and problems. We neglect God’s presence even though He alone can provide the wisdom and hope we need. When we make spending time with Him through prayer and meditating on Scripture a priority, He’ll give us the guidance and strength we need to address the challenges we face.

피난처와 같은 사람들

필과 샌디는 난민 아이들의 이야기에 마음이 움직여 마음을 열고 두 아이를 그들의 집에 받아들였습니다. 그들은 공항에서 아이들을 만나 데리고 오면서 긴장감 속에 아무말도 못하고 운전해 왔습니다. ‘그들은 이 일에 준비가 되어 있었던 걸까요?’ 그들은 아이들과 문화도 언어도 종교도 다 달랐지만, 이 소중한 아이들에게 피난처와 같은 사람들이 되어주고자 했습니다.

보아스도 룻의 이야기에 마음이 움직였습니다. 나오미를 보살피기 위해 자기 고향을 떠나온 룻의 이야기를 들은 보아스는 룻이 자신의 밭에 이삭을 주으러 오자 이렇게 축복해 주었습니다. “여호와께서 네가 행한 일에 보답하시기를 원하며 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 그의 ‘날개’ 아래에 보호를 받으러 온 네게 온전한 상 주시기를 원하노라”(룻기 2:12).

어느날 밤 룻은 보아스의 잠을 깨우면서 보아스가 축복했던 일을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 발 쪽에 움직임이 있어 잠이 깬 보아스는 “네가 누구냐” 라고 물었습니다. 룻은 “나는 당신의 여종 룻이오니 당신의 ‘옷자락’을 펴 당신의 여종을 덮으소서 이는 당신이 기업을 무를 자가 됨이니이다”(3:9)라고 답했습니다.

‘옷자락’과 ‘날개’의 히브리 말은 같습니다. 보아스는 룻과 결혼함으로써 그녀의 피난처가 되어주었고, 그들의 증손자 다윗은 이스라엘의 하나님께 이렇게 찬양하며 그들의 이야기를 다시 상기시켜 주었습니다. “하나님이여 주의 인자하심이 어찌 그리 보배로우신지요 사람들이 주의 날개 그늘 아래에 피하나이다”(시편 36:7).

PEOPLE OF REFUGE

Phil and Sandy, moved by stories of refugee children, opened their hearts and home to two of them. After they picked them up at the airport, they nervously drove home in silence. Were they ready for this? They didn’t share the same culture, language, or religion, but they’d become people of refuge for these precious children.

Boaz was moved by the story of Ruth. He’d heard how she left her people to support Naomi, and when Ruth came to glean in his field, Boaz prayed this blessing over her, “May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge” (RUTH 2:12).

Ruth reminded Boaz of his blessing when she interrupted his sleep one night. Awakened by movement at his feet, Boaz asked, “Who are you?” Ruth replied, “I am your servant Ruth. Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian redeemer of our family” (3:9).

The Hebrew word for corner of garment and wings is the same. Boaz gave Ruth refuge by marrying her, and their great-grandson David echoed their story in his praise to the God of Israel: “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!” he wrote. “People take refuge in the shadow of your wings” (PSALM 36:7).

진실함과 연약함

한 교회 친구가 문자를 보내왔습니다. “안녕 포팽! 이번 달 소그룹 모임에서는 모두가 야고보서 5장16절 말씀을 실천해 보면 어때? 믿을 수 있고 비밀이 보장되는 안전한 분위기를 만들어 삶의 힘든 부분을 나누고 서로를 위한 기도 시간을 한번 가져 보자.”

나는 잠시 어떻게 답을 해야 할지 몰랐습니다. 우리 소그룹은 여러 해 동안 서로 알고 지내왔지만 자신의 상처와 어려움을 모두 공개적으로 나눠 본 적이 없었기 때문입니다. 사실 연약한 모습을 솔직하게 드러낸다는 것은 쉽지 않은 일입니다.

그러나 진실은, 우리 모두 죄인이고 다 힘들게 산다는 것입니다. 우리는 누구나 예수님이 필요합니다. 하나님의 놀라운 은혜와 그리스도께 의지하는 삶에 대해 진솔하게 대화를 나눔으로 우리는 그분을 계속 신뢰할 수 있는 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 예수님과 함께 하는 사람은 마치 살면서 아무 걱정도 없는 것처럼 꾸미지 않아도 됩니다.

그래서 나는 “좋아, 그렇게 하자!”라고 답장했습니다. 처음에는 좀 어색했습니다. 그러나 한 사람이 마음을 열고 이야기를 하자 다른 사람이 곧 따라 했습니다. 몇 명은 조용히 있었으나 다 이해해 주었고, 아무도 억지로 하지 않았습니다. 우리는 야고보서 5장 16절의 뒷부분 “서로 기도하라”고 하신 말씀대로 서로를 위해 기도하고 모임을 마쳤습니다.

나는 그날 예수님을 믿는 성도들과 나누는 교제의 아름다움을 체험했습니다. 우리는 그리스도를 믿는 같은 믿음으로 서로에게 자신의 연약한 부분을 드러낼 수 있고, 약하고 어려울 때 주님께 그리고 서로에게 의지할 수 있습니다.

AUTHENTIC AND VULNERABLE

“Hey, Poh Fang!” A church friend texted. “For this month’s care group meeting, let’s get everyone to do what James 5:16 says. Let’s create a safe environment of trust and confidentiality, so we can share an area of struggle in our life and pray for each other.”

For a moment, I wasn’t sure how to reply. While our small group members have known each other for years, we’d never really openly shared all our hurts and struggles with one another. After all, it’s scary to be vulnerable.

But the truth is, we’re all sinners and we all struggle. We all need Jesus. Authentic conversations about God’s amazing grace and our dependency on Christ have a way of encouraging us to keep trusting in Him. With Jesus, we can stop pretending to have trouble-free lives.

So I replied, “Yes! Let’s do that!” Initially, it was awkward. But as one person opened up and shared, another soon followed. Though a few kept silent, there was understanding. No one was pressured. We ended the time by doing what the second part of James 5:16 says, “Pray for each other.”

That day I experienced the beauty of fellowship with believers in Jesus. Because of our common faith in Christ, we can be vulnerable with each other and depend on Him and others to help us in our weaknesses and struggles.

THE POWERFUL AND THE WEAK

Perhaps the most heartwarming tradition in college football happens at the University of Iowa. The Stead Family Children’s Hospital sits next to Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium, and the hospital’s top floor has floor-to-ceiling windows offering a great view of the field. On game days, sick children and their families fill the floor to watch the action below, and at the end of the first quarter, coaches, athletes, and thousands of fans turn to the hospital and wave. For those few moments, the children’s eyes light up. It’s powerful to see the athletes, with a packed stadium and thousands more watching on TV, pause and show they care.

The Scriptures instruct those who have power (and all of us have some kind of power) to care for those who are weak, watch over those who are struggling, and tend to those whose bodies are broken. Too often, though, we ignore those in need of attention (EZEKIEL 34:6). The prophet Ezekiel rebuked Israel’s leaders for their selfishness, for disregarding those who most needed help. “Woe to you,” God said through Ezekiel. “You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured” (VV. 2, 4).

How often do our personal priorities, leadership philosophies, or economic policies demonstrate little regard for those in distress? God shows us a different way, where those with power watch out for those who are weak (VV. 11–12).

어린 아이의 믿음

우리 가족이 되어 함께 살아온 할머니가 몇 차례 뇌졸중을 겪고 병원에 입원했을 때 의료진은 할머니가 어느 정도 뇌 손상을 입었는지 정확히 알 수 없었습니다. 뇌 기능을 검사하려면 할머니의 몸이 조금 나아질 때까지 기다려야 했습니다. 할머니는 말을 잘 못하였고 그나마 알아들을 수 있는 말은 얼마 안 되었습니다. 그런데 내 딸을 12년 동안 돌봐 주셨던 여든 여섯 살 된 할머니가 나를 보자마자 바싹 마른 입을 떼며 “케일라는 잘 지내고 있지?”라고 물었습니다. 할머니가 내게 한 첫마디는 그가 전심으로 사랑하셨던 내 아이에 관한 것이었습니다.

예수님도 어린 아이들을 사랑하셔서 제자들의 반대에도 아이들을 우선적으로 챙기셨습니다. 몇몇 부모들이 아이들을 예수님께 데리고 나오면 예수님은 “손을 얹어”(누가복음 8:15, 현대인의 성경) 그들을 축복해 주셨습니다. 그러나 예수님이 어린 아이들을 축복하시는 것을 모두가 달가워하지는 않았습니다. 제자들이 그 부모들을 꾸짖으며 예수님을 그만 귀찮게 하라고 하자, 예수님은 그것을 보시고 “어린 아이들이 내게 오는 것을 용납하라”(16 절)고 하셨습니다. 주님은 단순하게 의존하고 신뢰하고 순수한 어린 아이들의 모습이 하나님 나라를 어떻게 받아들여야 하는지 보여주는 본이 된다고 말씀하셨습니다.

어린 아이들에게는 숨은 의도가 거의 없습니다. 보이는 그대로입니다. 하나님 아버지께서 어린 아이와 같은 믿음을 되찾을 수 있게 우리를 도우셔서, 우리의 믿음과 하나님을 의지하는 마음이 어린 아이처럼 열려지기를 소망합니다.

FAITH OF A CHILD

As our adopted granny lay in her hospital bed after suffering several strokes, her doctors were unsure of the amount of brain damage she had endured. They needed to wait until she was a bit better to test her brain function. She spoke very few words and even fewer were understandable. But when the eighty-six-year-old woman who had babysat my daughter for twelve years saw me, she opened her parched mouth and asked: “How is Kayla?” The first words she spoke to me were about my child whom she had loved so freely and fully.

Jesus loved children too and put them in the forefront even though His disciples disapproved. Some parents would seek out Christ and present their children to Him. He chose to bless the children as He “[placed] his hands on them” (LUKE 18:15). But not everyone was happy that He was blessing little ones. The disciples scolded the parents and asked them to quit bothering Jesus. But He intervened and said, “Let the little children come to me” (V. 16). He called them an example of how we should receive God’s kingdom—with simple dependence, trust, and sincerity.

Young children rarely have a hidden agenda. What you see is what you get. As our heavenly Father helps us regain childlike trust, may our faith and dependence on Him be as open as a child’s.

하나님과 같은 궤도에 머물기

여러 해 전, 스페인 북서부에서 승객 218명을 태운 기차가 탈선하여 79 명이 사망하고 66명 이상이 부상을 당했습니다. 기관사는 그 사고를 설명할 수 없었지만 비디오 영상으로 그 사고가 밝혀졌습니다. 기차가 급커브를 지나기 전 너무 빨리 달린 것입니다. 기차에 탑승한 승객들을 보호하기 위해 제한 속도가 정해져 있었지만, 스페인 국영 철도회사에서 30년 동안 근무한 숙련된 기관사임에도 불구하고, 그 기관사는 무슨 이유에서인지 제한 속도를 무시했고 그래서 많은 사람들이 목숨을 잃었습니다.

신명기 5장에서 모세는 자신의 백성들을 위해 하나님과 맺은 본래 언약의 경계를 다시 살펴보았습니다. 모세는 젊은 세대에게 하나님의 교훈을 그들 자신과 하나님 사이의 언약으로 여기도록 권고하면서(3절) 십계명을 다시 언급했습니다(7-21절). 모세는 십계명을 반복하여 말하고 앞 세대의 불순종을 교훈 삼아, 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님을 경외하고 겸손하며 그분의 신실하심을 기억하라고 했습니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들이 그들 자신이나 다른 사람들의 삶을 파괴하지 못하도록 그들을 위한 길을 열어 주셨습니다. 만일 그들이 하나님의 지혜를 무시한다면, 그들은 스스로 위험을 감수할 수밖에 없는 것입니다.

STAYING ON TRACK WITH GOD

Years ago, a train carrying 218 people derailed in northwestern Spain, killing 79 people and hospitalizing 66 more. The driver couldn’t explain the accident, but the video footage could and did. The train was going far too fast before it hit a deadly curve. The allowable speed limit had been created to protect everyone on board the train. Despite being a thirty-year veteran of Spain’s national rail company, however, the driver had for whatever reason ignored the speed boundary and many people lost their lives.

In Deuteronomy 5, Moses reviewed God’s original covenant boundaries for His people. Moses encouraged a new generation to regard God’s instruction as their own covenant with Him (V. 3), and then he restated the Ten Commandments (VV. 7–21). By repeating the commandments and drawing lessons from the previous generation’s disobedience, Moses invited the Israelites to be reverent, humble, and mindful of God’s faithfulness. God had made a way for His people so they wouldn’t wreck their lives or the lives of others. If they ignored His wisdom, they would do so at their own peril.

Today, as God leads us, let’s make all of Scripture our delight, counselor, and the guardrail for our lives. And as the Spirit guides us, we can keep on track within His wise protection and devote our lives wholeheartedly to Him.

나의 친구는 개발도상국 사람들에게 무상으로 의료서비스를 제공하는 병원 선박 ‘아프리카 자비’호에서 근무합니다. 직원들은 달리 치료받을 길이 없는 수백 명의 환자들을 날마다 돌봅니다.

정기적으로 배에 타는 TV 촬영팀은 구개파열을 고치고 굽은 다리를 교정하는 놀라운 의료진에 카메라를 고정합니다. 때때로 촬영팀은 다른 선원들을 인터뷰하려고 갑판에서 내려가지만 내 친구 믹이 하는 일은 보통 그냥 지나칩니다.

기술자인 믹은 자신이 배의 하수 처리 시설에 배정받고 나서 놀랐다고 합니다. 날마다 4만 리터에 달하는 하수가 생겨나는 상황에서 이 독성 물질을 관리하는 것은 아주 중요한 일입니다. 파이프와 펌프를 관리하는 믹이 없다면 ‘아프리카 자비’호의 구호 활동은 중단될 것입니다.

LOWER DECK PEOPLE

A friend of mine works on a hospital ship called Africa Mercy, which takes free healthcare to developing countries. The staff daily serve hundreds of patients whose ailments would otherwise go untreated.

TV crews who periodically board the ship, point their cameras on its amazing medical staff, who fix cleft palates and reset club feet. Sometimes they go below deck to interview other crew members, but the work Mick does typically goes unnoticed.

Mick, an engineer, admits being surprised about where he’d been assigned to work—in the ship’s sewage plant. With up to forty thousand liters of waste produced each day, managing this
toxic material is serious business. Without Mick tending its pipes and pumps, Africa Mercy’s life-giving operations would stop.

It’s easy to applaud those on the “top deck” of Christian ministry while overlooking those in the galleys below. When the Corinthians elevated those with extraordinary gifts above others, Paul reminded them that every believer has a role in Christ’s work (1 CORINTHIANS 12:7–20), and every gift is important, whether it’s miraculous healing or helping others (VV. 27–31). In fact, the less prominent the role, the greater honor it deserves (VV. 22–24).

Are you a “lower deck” person? Then lift your head high. Your work is honored by God and indispensable to us all.
