거짓말은 전염된다
“속이는 것은 참으로 잔혹한 일이다.” 독일의 신학자이자 수도사 마이스터 에크하르트는 자기의 시에서 신뢰로 세워진 관계와 거짓으로 손상된 관계를 대비하여 그렇게 썼습니다. 그는 진실하고 사랑이 담긴 말은 “일상 위에 더하는 멋진 향신료”라고 표현했습니다. 그러나 거짓말은 마음을 흔드는 지진이나 영혼을 망치는 독과 같아서 “마음에 큰 혼란이 일어나 한때 사랑했던 사람도 더 이상 믿지 못하게 만든다... 이 전염병은 진실을 말하지 못하는 사람에 의해 퍼진다”고 했습니다.
거짓 때문에 퍼지는 전염병이라는 표현은 좀 심하게 들릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 말을 신중하게 해야 하는 것은 성경 전체에서 우리의 말과 그 영향력을 설명하는 것을 보면 잘 알 수 있습니다. 바울은 새신자들에게 예수님과 연합하기 이전과 이후의 생활 태도의 차이를 설명하면서 말의 중요성을 거듭 말합니다. 사도는 이렇게 강조합니다. “너희는 서로 거짓말을 하지 말라 옛 사람과 그 행위를 벗어버리고 새사람을 입었으니”(골로새서 3:9–10).
거짓을 말하거나 진실을 외곡하고 싶어지는 많은 이유들이 있습니다. 때로는 그것이 자신이나 다른 사람을 보호하는 가장 좋은 방법이라고 생각될 때도 있습니다. 그러나 그리스도의 사랑과 우리 마음속에서 일하시는 성령님을 통해 우리는 다른 길, 곧 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음”(3:12)으로 변화된 삶을 배우게 됩니다. 그리고 용서와 사랑이 어떻게 영혼에 안식이 되는 신뢰와 평화를 만들어 주는지도 배웁니다(15절).

PLAGUE OF LIES
“What a cruel act to be untruthful,” German theologian and monk Meister Eckhart once wrote in a poem that contrasts relationships built on trust with those damaged by lies. He described truthful, loving words as “wonderful spices mixed into the days.” But lies are like earthquakes in the mind and poison to the soul: “Havoc is created in the mind that can no longer trust someone once loved . . . . a plague is spread by one who cannot tell the truth.”
The imagery of a plague spread by falsehoods might seem stark. But to take speech seriously resonates with how our words and their impact are described throughout Scripture. When Paul explains to new believers the difference between life before and after their union with Jesus, words take center stage. “Do not lie to each other,” the apostle emphasizes, “since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self” (COLOSSIANS 3:9-10).
There are many reasons to be tempted to lie or distort the truth. Sometimes we might think it’s the best way to protect ourselves or others. But through Christ’s love, through His Spirit at work in our hearts, we learn a different way—one transformed by “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (3:12). And we learn how forgiveness and love can create the kind of trust and peace that brings rest to our souls (V. 15).
