경이로우신 하나님
풍경 사진을 찍는 나에게는 온라인에서 보는 사진들이 눈에 들어옵니다. 나는 얼마전 “미국에서 가장 놀라운 장소 10선”이라는 사진을 보았습 니다. 한 온천의 사진에는 여러 색으로 빛나는 큰 물웅덩이가 있었고, 호 열대우림(Hoh Rain Forest)의 순간 포착 사진은 영화 ‘호빗’에서 나올 법한 울창한 이끼 숲을 보여주었습니다. 애리조나주의 모뉴먼트 밸리에서 찍은 놀라운 사진은 마치 화성의 모습을 파노라마로 보여주는 것 같았습니다.
이런 경이로운 모습에서 나는 우리의 경이로운 하나님을 생각하게 됩니다. 시편 68편에서 다윗은 하나님의 위엄을 찬양하며 “하나님을 찬양하여라... 구름 수레를 타고 오시는 분에게”(4절, 새번역)라고 외칩니다. 시편 기자는 원수들을 무력케 하는 하나님의 능력을 눈으로 보는 듯 “연기가 불려 가듯이 그들을 몰아 내소서”(2절) 하고 외칩니다. 그러나 하나님은 온전한 위엄과 권능뿐 아니라 친밀한 사랑도 보여주십니다. “날마다 우리 짐을 지시는... 하나님을 찬송할 지로다”(19절). 다윗의 이 긴 시편은 최고의 찬양으로 마칩니다. “오 하나님, 주는 장엄하십니다”(35절, 쉬운 성경).
풍경 사진에서 나는 광대함과 친밀함을 함께 봅니다. 끝없이 펼쳐지는 광경이 내 영혼에 직접 말합니다. 이 세상의 풍경들은 바로 하나님 그분의 면모를 보는 것이고, 하나님이 얼마나 광대하면서 사랑으로 충만하신 지를 보여주는 것이라 생각하게 됩니다. 그런 관점에서 우리는 오늘도 우리 주위에 드러나 보이는 하나님의 아름다움을 찾아보기 원합니다. 그리고 보일 때마다 조용한 탄성이 나올 것입니다. “오 하나님, 주는 장엄하십니다.”

AWESOME GOD
As a landscape photographer, I’m drawn to photos I find online. Recently I came across “10 of the Most Breathtaking Places in the U.S.” A photo of a geothermal spring depicts a massive basin of multicolored luminescence. A snapshot of the Hoh Rain Forest shows a dense, mossy forest that looks like something straight out of The Hobbit. A stunning picture taken in Monument Valley, Arizona, could be a panorama of Mars.
These awesome images make me think of our awesome God. In Psalm 68, David gushes about God’s majesty: “Sing to God . . . extol him who rides on the clouds” (V. 4). Vividly, the psalmist proclaims God’s power over enemies: “May you blow them away like smoke” (V. 2). Yet God’s sheer majesty and power are contrasted with His intimate love: “Praise be to the Lord . . . who daily bears our burdens” (V. 19). David’s epic psalm reaches a climax with his breathless praise: “You, God, are awesome” (V. 35).
In landscape photographs, I find both immensity and intimacy. The sheer expanse of these vistas speaks personally to my soul. It makes me wonder if the landscapes of our world are really glimpses of God Himself—reflections of how He’s both awesomely immense and breathtakingly loving. In that light, might we look for His reflected beauty around us today. When we see it, we might whisper to Him, “You, God, are awesome.” KENNETH PETERSEN
