성공적인 결혼 생활
지미 카터는 미국 대통령 가운데 결혼 생활을 제일 오래 했습니다. 그는 아내 로잘린 여사와 77년을 함께 살았습니다. 성공적인 결혼 생활의 비결을 묻는 질문에 카터는 “배우자를 잘 선택하는 것”이라고 했습니다. 그는 또한 결혼 생활의 성공 요소로 화해, 소통, 믿음 지키기, 이 세 가지를 꼽았습니다.
“해가 지도록 분을 품지 말라”고 한 에베소서 4장 26절 말씀에 ‘화해’하는 방법이 있습니다. 카터 부부는 이를 진지하게 받아들였습니다. 지미는 언젠가 이렇게 말했습니다. “매일 밤 우리는 낮에 있었던 다툼을 모두 해소하려 노력합니다.” 또한 에베소서 4장에서 우리는 그리스도인답게 소통하는 비결을 알 수 있습니다. 바울은 “서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라”(32절)고 하였습니다.
하나님은 직접 결혼이라는 제도를 만드시고 그것을 선한 것이라 하셨습니다(창세기 2:24; 히브리서 13:4). 잠언 18장 22절에서 “아내를 얻는 자는 복을 얻고 여호와께 은총을 받는 자”라고 하면서 결혼은 하나님의 축복이라 말합니다. 그리고 우리는 결혼 생활이나 그리스도의 공동체로서 다른 사람을 세워주고 긍정적 영향을 끼치도록 서로를 대할 수 있습니다. 독신이나 기혼자나 우리의 말과 행동에서는 그리스도의 사랑과 용서의 마음이 진정으로 나타나야 합니다.

A MARRIAGE OBSERVED
Of all United States presidents, Jimmy Carter had the longest marriage. He and his wife Rosalyn were married for seventyseven years. When Carter was asked the secret to his long, successful marriage, he replied, “Choose the right person to marry.” Beyond that, he named three other concepts for marital success: reconciliation, communication, and devotion to faith.
We see the idea of reconciliation in Ephesians 4:26: “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” The Carters took this seriously. “Every night, we try to make sure we’re completely reconciled from all the arguments during the day,” Jimmy once said. We can also see the secret to Christlike communication in Ephesians 4. Paul wrote, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (V. 32).
God ordained marriage as something good—something established by Him (GENESIS 2:24; HEBREWS 13:4). Proverbs 18:22 says that marriage is a divine blessing: “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” And the way we treat one another, in marriage and in the entire body of Christ, can encourage and positively affect others. Whether we’re single or married, our words and actions can truly reflect the loving, forgiving heart of Christ.
