긍휼히 여기는 이해심
나의 장인어른은 제2차 세계대전 당시 유럽 상공을 비행하던 폭격기의 기관총 사수였습니다. 그의 비행기가 격추되면서 포로로 잡혔고 그는 몇 달 동안 전쟁 포로 수용소에서 지냈습니다. 그는 그때의 경험에 대해 거의 입밖에 내지 않았지만, 전쟁 전에 그를 알았던 사람들은 그가 환한 미소를 짓는 낙천적인 젊은이였다고 말합니다. 그러던 그가 전쟁을 겪으면서 우울하고 내성적인 사람으로 바뀌었습니다.
나는 장인어른이 겪은 일을 조금이나마 이해해보고자 유럽 상공의 공중 전에 대해 도널드 밀러가 쓴 ‘공중의 전사들’을 읽어보았습니다. 그 책은 공중전에 참여했던 병사들이 겪었던 육체적, 정신적 고통을 이해하는 데 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그 책을 읽고 난 후 장인어른을 향한 나의 연민의 마음이 더욱 깊어졌습니다.
히브리서는 “위대한 대제사장”(4:14)이신 예수님에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. 예수님은 단지 우리의 고통을 이해하는 데 그치지 않고, 우리와 함께 사시면서 모든 상황 속에서 우리가 느끼는 감정을 직접 아셨습니다. 히브리서는 이렇게 말합니다. “우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라”(15절). 한번 생각해 보십시오! 예수님은 우리가 무엇을 견뎌내고 있는지 아십니다. 그분도 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으셨습니다.
예수님의 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 배우는 것은 예수님을 필요로 하는 이들 에게 그분의 사랑을 전하는 훌륭한 방법입니다. 하나님께서 성령을 통하여 우리에게 사랑과 자비로 이웃에게 다가가는 이해의 마음을 허락해주시기를 소망합니다.

사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 제가 다른 이들을 모질게 대했던 것을 용서하소서. 저에게 긍휼의 은혜를 가르쳐주셔서 사람들이 저를 통해 주님의 사랑을 발견할 수 있게 하소서.

COMPASSIONATE UNDERSTANDING
My father-in-law was a gunner in a bomber over Europe during World War II. His plane was shot down and he was captured, spending several months as a prisoner of war. Jim rarely spoke of the experience, but those who knew him before the war said that he’d been a happy-go-lucky young man with a beaming smile. His war experiences turned him into a moody, withdrawn person.
Trying to understand his experience, I read Masters of the Air, Donald Miller’s description of the air war over Europe. Miller helped me grasp the physical and psychological price paid by these airmen. His book increased my compassion for my father-in-law.
The writer of Hebrews wrote of our “great high priest” (4:14)— Jesus Himself—who did much more than merely gain understanding of our struggles. He lived among us, learning how we feel in every situation. Hebrews tells us, “We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (V. 15). Think of it! Jesus knows what we endure. He’s been tempted just as we are.
Learning to have a heart of compassion like Jesus is a great way to show His love to those who need Him. May God give us, by His Holy Spirit, an understanding heart that reaches out to others in love and mercy.
