참된 보화
제임스는 밧줄의 한쪽 끝에 강한 자석을 묶어 뉴욕의 한 호수에 던졌습니다. 그 “자석 낚시꾼”은 진흙투성이의 백 달러 지폐가 다발로 가득 찬 지저분한 금고를 건져올리고는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 경찰은 그 돈이 범죄에 연루되지 않았기 때문에 제임스가 가져도 된다고 말했습니다. 지폐 중 일부는 상태가 너무 안 좋아서 진위 여부를 확인할 수 없었지만, 그는 집을 사는 데 보태기 위해 가능한 한 많은 돈을 복원하고 싶었습니다.
숨겨진 보화를 찾는 것은 흥미진진한 일이고 예수님도 이와 비슷한 예화를 들려주셨습니다. “천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라” (마태복음 13:44). 이 사람은 그가 발견한 보화의 가치를 알기 때문에 자신의 소유를 모두 팔아 그 밭을 사려고 했습니다.
이 비유와 관련해 생각해보면, 세상의 어떤 재물이나 소유로도 우리의 죄 값을 치를 수는 없습니다. 오직 예수님의 대신 죽으심과 부활하심만이 우리를 구원하고 하나님 아버지와 화목하게 하는 그 엄청난 값을 치를 수 있습니다.
세상의 보화들도 좋지만, 그것들은 잃어버리고 빼앗기고 망가질 수 있습 니다. 우리는 예수님께서 우리를 위해 치르신 지고한 희생과 값없이 주신 영생 이라는 선물을 감사함으로 받을 수 있으며, 그분과 함께 천국에서 사는 것이 우리의 가장 큰 상급임을 압니다.

TRUE TREASURE
James threw a long rope with a powerful magnet tied to it into the waters of a New York lake. The “magnet fisher” was stunned when he pulled out a grimy safe filled with stacks of muddy one-hundred-dollar bills. Police said James could keep the money since it wasn’t linked to a crime. Some of the bills were in such poor condition they couldn’t be authenticated, though he hoped to salvage as much of the money as possible to perhaps buy a home.
Finding hidden treasure is exciting, and Jesus told a parable about a man who did just that: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (MATTHEW 13:44). The man recognized the value of the treasure he’d found and was willing to sell all his possessions to purchase the field.
As we consider that parable, no amount of wealth or possessions could pay the debt we owe for our sins. Only Jesus could pay the incredible price to redeem us and to reconcile us with His Father, through His sacrificial death and resurrection.
Earthly treasures may be nice, but they can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. We can gratefully accept Jesus’ supreme sacrifice for us and His free gift of eternal life, knowing that living in heaven with Him is our great reward.
