하나님의 임재 안에서 누리는 삶

동물학자들은 바다거북이가 먹이 앞에서 보이는 재미있는 행동을 “거북이 춤”이라고 부릅니다. 거북이는 물 속에서 몸을 세우고 입을 벌린 채 앞발을 마주치며 빙글빙글 돕니다. 하지만 연구 결과, 전파 간섭이 거북이의 “위치 파악 능력”을 방해한다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다. 길을 잃게 만들고, 먹이를 찾는 데 혼란을 주고, 결국 슬프게도 거북이 춤을 멈추게 한다는 것입니다.

성경에는 다윗이 춤을 추었던 일이 나옵니다. 언약궤는 하나님의 임재를 상징했습니다. 다윗은 언약궤가 예루살렘으로 들어올 때 “여호와 앞에서 힘을 다하여 춤을 추었습니다”(사무엘하 6:14). 그러나 세월이 흐르자 다윗은 방심 했습니다. 밧세바와 죄를 짓고, 그의 남편을 전쟁터로 보내 죽게 만들었습니다(11:4, 14-15절). 밧세바와의 사이에서 태어난 아이는 병들어 죽어 갔고, 다윗은 뉘우침과 비통함으로 “금식하고 안에 들어가서 밤새도록 땅에 엎드렸습니다” (12:16).

우리도 다윗처럼 하나님의 임재 안에서는 왕성한 삶을 누리지만, 죄는 우리를 하나님과 분리시키고 “춤을 출 수 없게” 만듭니다. 어떻게 기쁨을 되찾을 수 있을까요? 하나님과의 연결을 방해하는 죄에서 돌이키면 됩니다. 회개할 때 우리는 하나님 안에서 소망을 찾습니다. 다윗은 하나님의 자비에 대해 이렇게 기록했습니다. “주께서 나의 슬픔이 변하여 내게 춤이 되게 하시며 나의 베옷을 벗기고 기쁨으로 띠 띠우셨나이다”(시편 30:11). 결국 하나님은 우리가 추는 춤의 진정한 주인이십니다.

THRIVING IN GOD’S PRESENCE

Zoologists describe what they call “turtle dancing”—the charming behavior of loggerhead turtles when they are in the presence of food. The turtles tilt their bodies vertically, open their mouths, clap their front flippers, and spin around in the water. But research has shown that radio-wave interference can disrupt the turtle’s internal “GPS.” It confuses their navigation, distracts them from their food source, and, sadly, stops their dancing.

The Bible tells of a time when David danced. The ark of the covenant conveyed the very presence of God. At a certain time, the ark was brought to Jerusalem and “David was dancing before the Lord with all his might” (2 SAMUEL 6:14). But years later, the king became distracted. He sinned with Bathsheba, sending her husband to death in war (11:4, 14-15). Now the child he’d borne with her was dying. In remorse and anguish, David “fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground” (12:16).

Like David, we thrive in the presence of God, but our sin distracts us from Him, and we stop “dancing.” How can we find our joy again? By turning from the sin that confuses our connection to God. When we repent, we find hope in Him. David himself writes of God’s mercy: “You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy” (PSALM 30:11). God, after all, is the true Lord of the dance.

아낌없는 사랑

손자의 열한 번째 생일을 맞아 가족들이 지중해식 요리를 하는 식당에 모였습니다. 음식을 주문하기 전에 아들은 손자에게 무엇이 먹고 싶은 지 물었습니다. 손자는 머뭇거리다 마지못해 연어 요리라고 말했는데, 그것이 매우 비싸다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그러자 아들은 이렇게 말했습니다. “네 생일이잖아. 먹고 싶은 거 먹어도 돼.” 손자는 너무 좋아서 함박웃음을 지었습니다.

아들의 손자를 향한 사랑을 보며 하나님의 아낌없는 사랑을 조금이나마 떠올릴 수 있었습니다. 요한1서 3장은 하나님께서 우리들에게 쏟아 부으신 “위대한 사랑”에 대해 이렇게 기록합니다. 하나님은 우리 믿는 자들을 그 분의 자녀라고 부르시며 아낌없는 사랑을 베풀었습니다(1절). 그 사랑은 우리 모두에게 주는 그리스도의 희생이라는 가장 큰 선물로 나타났습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 “우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨고”(16절), 우리는 “그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 말미암아 은혜로” 구원받았습니다(에베소서 2:8). 이것이 하나님께서 모든 믿는 자들에게 주신 은혜의 선물입니다.

하나님의 아낌없는 사랑에 대한 응답으로, 우리도 “형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅합니다”(요한1서 3:16). 믿음을 실천에 옮겨서 하나님을 사랑하고 순종하며, 그 사랑을 다른 이들에게 전해야 합니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 성령의 도움으로 가족들과 이웃에게 아낌없는 사랑을 베풀게 하십니다.

LAVISH LOVE

It was my grandson’s eleventh birthday, and a group of family members gathered at a Mediterranean restaurant to celebrate. Before ordering, my son asked the birthday boy what he wanted. He reluctantly told his dad he’d like the salmon but knew it was too expensive. My son told him, “It’s your birthday. If that’s what you’d like, you can have it.” My grandson was thrilled, and his broad smile showed it.

My son’s love for his son reminds me in small part of God’s lavish love. First John 3 describes the “great love” God showers on us: He calls all who believe in Him His children (V. 1), the benefactors of His lavish love. This love is exemplified in Christ’s sacrifice, the greatest gift of all. Jesus “laid down his life for us” on the cross (V. 16). “We’re saved ‘by grace through faith’ in Christ” (EPHESIANS 2:8). This is God’s gracious gift to everyone who believes.

In response to God’s lavish love, let’s “lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 JOHN 3:16). We’re called to put our faith into action: to love and obey Him and to spread that love to others. Through the Holy Spirit, God enables us to extend lavish love to our family and beyond.

목자의 마음

“우리 울타리에 아기 사슴이 갇혔어!” 헤더가 남편 팀에게 전화를 걸었습니다. 그는 조심스럽게 그 사슴을 풀어주었지만, 어미는 어디에도 보이지 않았습니다.

그 날 오후, 팀은 숲속에서 사슴 떼가 나와 주변 풀밭의 풀을 뜯는 모습을 보았습니다. 유독 한 암사슴이 주위를 경계하며 살피는 듯했습니다. 팀은 혹시 그 암사슴이 길 잃은 새끼 사슴의 어미가 아닌가 싶어 전화기로 녹음해 두었던 새끼 사슴의 울음소리를 크게 틀었습니다. 그러자 암사슴은 그를 따르기 시작했고, 팀은 새끼 사슴을 풀어준 곳까지 어미를 안내했습니다. 새끼 사슴은 즉시 어미의 젖을 먹기 시작했고, 결국 어미와 새끼는 다시 만나 자유를 되찾았습니다. 모두 팀의 친절한 목자 역할 덕분이었습니다.

하나님께서는 팀이 한 것보다 더욱 세심하게 우리를 돌보시고 자유를 누리게 해 주십니다. 이스라엘 백성은 죄에 빠져서 결국 바벨론에서 포로 생활을 하고 있었습니다. 하지만 하나님께서는 “내가 내 양을 찾고 찾겠다”(에스겔 34:11)고 약속하셨습니다. 이스라엘의 지도자들은 백성을 “흩어지게”(12절) 내버려두었지만, 하나님께서는 “잃어버린 자를 찾고 쫓기는 자를 돌아오게 하겠다”(16절)고 말씀하신 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 성도는 우리를 찾고 구원하시려는 하나님의 궁극적인 돌보심을 압니다. 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “선한 목자는 양들을 위하여 목숨을 버리거니와”(요한복음 10:11). 우리가 죄로 인해 길을 잃고 그 속에 사로잡혀 있을 때 예수님께서는 엄청난 대가를 지불하시면서 우리를 구원하기로 작정하셨습니다. 자유는 바로 지금 그리고 언제나 소중한 것입니다. 우리를 자유케 하신 그 선한 목자를 찬양하며 기뻐합시다!

A SHEPHERD’S HEART

“A baby deer is caught in our fence!” Heather called to her husband, Tim. He gently set it free, but its mother was nowhere to be seen.

That afternoon Tim saw a herd of deer emerge from the woods and graze nearby. One doe seemed especially alert. Wondering if she was the fawn’s mother, Tim looked up a recording of a fawn’s distress cry on his mobile phone and played it loudly over the speaker. The doe began to follow him, and he led her to where the fawn was nestled away. The fawn immediately began to nurse; freedom had been obtained, mother and baby were reunited—all thanks to Tim’s gentle shepherding.

God is even more intentional in caring for His people and providing the freedom we need. The people of Israel had stumbled in their sin and were trapped in exile in Babylon. Yet God promised, “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them” (EZEKIEL 34:11). Because Israel’s leaders had allowed them to be “scattered” (V. 12), God said, “I will search for the lost and bring back the strays” (V. 16).

Believers in Jesus see God’s ultimate care in His search and rescue mission for us. “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep,” Jesus said (JOHN 10:11). When we were lost in our sins and captive to them, He chose to rescue us at great cost. On this day and all days, freedom is precious. Let’s celebrate the Good Shepherd who has set us free!

믿음으로 걸으라

한 여성이 저녁 기도 모임에 참여하기 위해 교회의 계단을 조심조심 올라가고 있었습니다. 숨이 차고 다리가 아파 잠시 멈추자 한 남자가 지나가며 말했습니다. “한 번에 한 걸음씩. 그 외에는 방법이 없습니다. 천천히 하세요.” 그 여성은 그렇게 격려를 받았기에 끝까지 올라갈 수 있었을지도 모릅니다. 그 격려의 말은 그날 저녁 그곳을 방문했던 나의 지친 영혼에게마저 힘을 주었습니다.

믿음의 여정에서 길이 너무 멀거나 힘들게 느껴지면 포기하고 싶을 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 이사야 선지자가 이스라엘 백성에게 했던 말에서 위안을 얻습니다. 이스라엘 백성이 바벨론에서 수십 년 동안 포로 생활을 하던 동안 이사야는 하나님께서 반드시 그들을 구원하실 것이며, 하나님은 아무 힘도 없는 우상과는 다른 분이라는 점을 일깨워 주었습니다(이사야 40:18-20). 천지를 지으신 전능하신 하나님은 “피곤하거나 곤비하지 않으시며” 약한 자를 강하게 하십니다(이사야 40:28-29). “오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개 치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다”(31절).

이사야의 말은 이스라엘 백성들에게 힘을 주었으며, 우리 또한 그들이 의지했던 같은 “영원하신 하나님”으로부터 힘을 공급받을 수 있습니다(28-29절). 날마다, 그리고 한 번에 한 걸음씩 믿음을 가지고 걸어 가십시다. 유일하신 참 하나님 안에서 소망을 놓지 않을 때 하나님은 그분의 영광을 위해 우리가 걷고, 뛰고, 날아오를 수 있게 도와주실 것입니다.

WALK BY FAITH

The woman walked gingerly up each step to the church’s sanctuary for that night’s prayer service. As she paused because of her pain or breathlessness, a man passing by said, “One step at a time. That’s the only way you’re going to make it. Take it easy.” His words were meant to encourage the woman and may have given her the boost she needed to reach the top. They certainly encouraged my weary soul during my visit that evening.

In our faith journey, we may feel tempted to quit when the path seems too long or difficult. Yet in these moments, we can find solace in the words the prophet Isaiah spoke to comfort the Israelites. He told them God would eventually redeem them from their decades of captivity in Babylon, and He reminded them that God wasn’t like powerless idols (ISAIAH 40:18-20). Almighty God, who created the heavens and earth, “will not grow tired or weary,” and He strengthens the weak (ISAIAH 40:28-29). “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (V. 31).

Isaiah’s words encouraged the Israelites, and we can receive strength from the same “everlasting God” (VV. 28-29) they were trusting. Let’s walk by faith day by day and one step at a time. As we continue to hope in the one true God, He will help us walk, run, and soar for His glory.

그리스도 안에서의 동역

1869년, 뉴욕에서 브루클린 다리의 건설이 시작되었습니다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않아 수석 엔지니어였던 워싱턴 로블링이 심한 병에 걸렸 습니다. 그러자 그의 아내 에밀리가 남편을 돕기 위해 나섰습니다. 남편의 설계도를 공부했고, 내용을 보완했으며, 남편의 직원들에게 지시를 내리기도 했습니다. 에밀리는 그녀가 할 수 있는 모든 방식으로 남편을 도왔으며, 1883년 다리가 완공되어 개통되자 그 다리를 건너는 첫 마차를 탔습니다. 그녀의 남편은 아내의 “놀라운 재능”과 “일과 설계에 대한 깊은 이해”를 찬탄해 마지 않았습니다.

이러한 팀워크는 아름다운 일이며 또한 인생에서 가장 의미있는 일을 이루도록 만들어주는 비결입니다. 솔로몬은 전도서에서 동역하는 이유에 대해 다음과 같이 설명 했습니다. “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라 혹시 그들 중 하나가 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와”(4:9-10). 바울도 동역이 교회 사역의 핵심이라고 말했습니다. “지체는 많으나 몸은 하나라”(고린도전서 12:20). 그러므로 “몸 가운데서 분쟁이 없고”(25절), 서로를 돌보며 함께 섬겨야 한다고 덧붙였습니다.

일터에서나 가정, 혹은 교회 공동체 안에서 어느 누구도 혼자가 아닙니다. 누군가가 휘청거리면 서로 의지해야 하고, 각자의 은사를 모아야 합니다. 하나님께서 맡기신 일을 이루기 위해서는 팀워크가 필수적입니다.

TEAM EFFORT IN CHRIST

In 1869, construction began on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Soon after work commenced, chief engineer Washington Roebling became very ill. His wife, Emily, pitched in to help. She studied his plans, revised specifications, and gave instructions to his assistants. Emily assisted her husband in any way she could, and when the bridge opened in 1883, she rode in the first carriage across it. Her husband praised her “remarkable talent” and “her thorough knowledge of the work and plans.”

Such teamwork is beautiful and the secret to the most meaningful work of our lives. Solomon explained the basis of teamwork in Ecclesiastes: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (4:9-10). And Paul said we should view teamwork as a key to the work of the church: “There are many parts, but one body” (1 CORINTHIANS 12:20). He further explained that there should be “no division in the body” (V. 25) as everyone serves together, caring for each other.

In our work, our family, or in the life of the church, none of us are in this alone. We need each other when someone falters, and we need each other as we combine our talents. Teamwork is vital as we set out to accomplish what God wants us to do.

예수 안에 거하라

“기쁨은 기억될 때 비로소 완성된다.” C.S. 루이스의 소설 ‘침묵의 행성 밖에서(Out of the Silent Planet)’에 등장하는 한 인물의 대사 입니다. 이 말은 인생의 소중한 경험을 추억할 때 누리게 되는 기쁨을 의미합니다. 등산 중에 숨이 멎도록 아름다운 풍경을 마주하거나, 사랑하는 사람과 중요한 순간을 함께하는 것은 커다란 기쁨입니다. 그런데 그 감정은 시작에 불과합니다. 훗날 그 순간들을 되새길 때 그 경험들이 준 기쁨은 배가 됩니다.

예수님께서 제자들에게 “성찬예식”을 정기적으로 행하라고 명하신 이유도 여기에 있을 것입니다. 예수님은 돌아가시기 전날 밤 제자들과 함께 유월절 식사를 하시며 그것에 새 의미를 부여하셨습니다. 예수님은 누룩 없는 떡과 “포도나무의 열매”를 드시며 그것이 자신의 몸과 피를 상징한다고 말씀하셨 습니다 (누가복음 22:19-20). 그리고 제자들에게 “나를 기억하며” 앞으로도 이 성찬을 계속 행하라고 명하셨습니다(19절).

이스라엘 백성들은 유월절을 지키면서 하나님께서 그들을 이집트에서 구원하신 것을 기억합니다(출애굽기 12:17 참조). 예수님의 희생을 믿는 성도들은 성찬에 참여함으로써 죄에서 건지신 하나님의 구원을 엄숙히 그러나 기쁘게 기억합니다. 이 예식을 꾸준히 행할 때 우리는 예수님과의 교제 안에 “거하는” 연습을 하고(요한복음 6:56 참조), 거기서 오는 기쁨을 맛봅니다.

REMAINING IN JESUS

“A pleasure is full grown only when it is remembered.” These words, uttered by a character in C. S. Lewis’ book Out of the Silent Planet, depict the joy one has in reminiscing over cherished experiences in life. Though we rightly delight in the breathtaking scenery along the path of a hike or in sharing an important milestone with a loved one, what we feel might be merely the initial pleasure. Often, later reflection on such moments (and those like them) compound the joy of having experienced them.

Perhaps this is another reason Jesus instructs His disciples to regularly share in what we call the Lord’s Supper. As He shared the Passover meal with them the night before His death, He infused it with a new layer of meaning. When partaking of the unleavened bread and “fruit of the vine,” Jesus described them as representing His body and His blood (LUKE 22:19-20). His disciples were to share this meal regularly, doing so “in remembrance of [Him]” (V. 19).

The Jewish people remember how God delivered them from Egypt through celebrating Passover (SEE EXODUS 12:17). Those who trust in Jesus’ sacrifice retell God’s deliverance from the consequences of sin by partaking of the Lord’s Supper—a somber, yet joyful remembrance. By sharing in it regularly, we practice what it means to “remain” in fellowship with Jesus (SEE JOHN 6:56) and savor the pleasure of our communion with Him.

성장을 구하는 기도

람 와이 찬은 고향 싱가포르를 떠나 일본의 한 교회의 목사로 부임하고서 공황상태에 빠졌습니다. 교인의 수가 20명에 불과했습니다. “선교의 무덤”으로 알려진 일본에서는 인구의 약 1퍼센트가 기독교인이고 많은 교회가 비어 있습니다. 람은 마치 “침몰하는 배를 인수한” 느낌이었습니다. 하나님께 부르짖으며 기도를 하던 그는 ‘교회를 나에게 돌려다오’라는 응답을 받았습니다.

와이 찬은 예배나 음악을 “새롭게 바꾸기”보다 신도들에게 그들의 필요를 위해, 그리고 가족과 예수님을 모르는 친구들을 위해 기도하자고 했습니다. 교회는 서서히 두 배로 늘어났습니다.

그들의 신실한 기도는 예수님 안에서 공동체를 세우는 살아있는 성경적 방법입니다. 먼저 기도하는 것입니다. 바울은 “아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라”고 하였습니다(빌립보서 4:6). 이렇게 우리의 사역과 교회와 프로그램들을 하나님께 다시 드리는 것입니다. 우리는 씨를 심고 물을 줄 수는 있어도 바울 사도의 말처럼 “심는 이나 물 주는 이는 아무것도 아니로되 오직 자라게 하는 이는 하나님 뿐”(고린도전서 3:7)입니다. 그는 고린도 교회의 신자들에게 어떤 교회 지도자를 따를까 논쟁하지 말라고 간곡히 부탁했습니다(3-6절).

바울은 “이 닦아 둔 것 외에 능히 다른 터를 닦아 둘 자가 없으니 이 터는 곧 예수 그리스도”(11절)라고 하였습니다. 기도하는 가운데 우리의 교회를 예수님께 돌려 드립시다. 그리고 교회가 성장하는 모습을 지켜봅시다.

PRAYING TO GROW

After Lam Wai Chan moved from his native Singapore to pastor a church in Japan, he panicked. The church had barely twenty members. In a nation known as a “missionary graveyard,” where about one percent of the nation’s people are Christian and many churches sit empty, Lam felt “like I was taking over a sinking ship.” Crying out to God, he sensed the answer: Offer the church back to Me.

Rather than “update” worship or music, Wai Chan asked members to pray—for their needs, family members, and friends who didn’t know Jesus. Slowly, the church doubled in size.

Their faithful praying is a living, biblical model of how to build a community in Jesus. First, pray. “In every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,” Paul wrote, “present your requests to God,” and do all of this without worry about anything (PHILIPPIANS 4:6). In this way, we offer our ministries, churches, and programs back to God. We may plant seeds and water them, but as the apostle said, “Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow” (1 CORINTHIANS 3:7). He was imploring believers at Corinth to stop quarrelling about which church leader they followed (VV. 3-6).

As Paul said, “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (V. 11). Let’s prayerfully give our churches back to Him. Then, watch them grow.

대신 죽으신 예수님

미국 남북전쟁(1861-65)이 길어지면서 양측에서 모두 병력을 보충하기 위해 징병제를 실시했습니다. 남부연합의 법에 따르면 징집 대상자는 징집 면제자인 사람을 고용해 자신을 대신하게 함으로써 병역 의무를 피할 수가 있었습니다. 대부분의 경우 대리인은 징집 연령 미만자 아니면 초과자였습니다. 일반적으로 “의뢰인”(징집을 피하는 사람을 지칭)은 정부에 비용을 내야 했고 대리인에게도 상당한 금액을 지불해야 했습니다. 따라서 부유층만이 대리인을 고용할 수가 있었습니다.

바울 사도는 하늘에 속한 영적 전쟁에 대해 기록하기를 “모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하였다”(로마서 3:23)고 하면서 “죄의 삯은 사망이라” 하였습니다(6:23). 여기에는 어떤 “수단”을 부릴 수 있는 자들에게 빠져나갈 길을 열어주는 조항이나 탈법의 여지가 없습니다. 그러나 우리 모두를 대신해 죽을 사람이 있다면 어떨까요? 히브리서 저자는 무한하신 자비로 예수님을 우리의 대속자로 보내신 하나님을 찬양합니다. 예수님께서는 우리의 죄로 치러야 할 벌을 대신 짊어지시고, “그리스도의 몸을 단번에” 희생하심으로써 우리의 빚을 갚으셨습니다. 그래서 우리는 예수님이 대신 돌아가심으로 “거룩함을 얻었습니다”(히브리서 10:10). 우리는 “그리스도와 함께 죽었으며”, 때가 이르면 또한 “그와 함께 살” 것입니다(로마서 6:8).

이것이 바로 복음입니다. 그리스도께서는 우리를 위하여 죽으셨습니다. 대속자 그분이 우리의 자리를 대신하였습니다. 이제 우리는 단순히 이 전쟁에서 살아남은 자가 아닙니다. 하나님의 아들과 딸이 되었습니다.

JESUS—OUR SUBSTITUTE

As the US Civil War (1861-65) dragged on, both sides resorted to conscription (the draft) to fill their ranks. Under the Confederate law, a draftee could dodge service by hiring a man who was exempt from the draft to replace him—in most cases someone under or over the conscription age. Generally, the “principal” (as one evading the draft was called) paid a fee to the government as well as a large sum to his substitute. Only the wealthy could afford substitutes.

The apostle Paul writes of the cosmic spiritual war, where “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (ROMANS 3:23) and “the wages of sin is death” (6:23). There was no clause or loophole that gave those with “means” some way out. But what about a substitute for us all? The writer to the Hebrews praises God, who in His infinite mercy sent Jesus to be our substitute—to bear the punishment our sin deserved, to pay our debt by sacrificing “the body of Jesus Christ once for all” so that we would be “made holy” through His substitutionary sacrifice (HEBREWS 10:10). We have “died with Christ,” and one day “we will also live with him” (ROMANS 6:8).

That’s the good news right there. Christ died for you and for me; the substitute took our place. We’re now more than simply survivors of the war. We’ve become the sons and daughters of God.

꿀보다 달콤한 것

재럿의 얼굴에 웃음이 번지게 하려면 그가 키우는 벌들에 대해 물으면 됩니다. 그는 벌을 치는 양봉가입니다. 그의 뒷마당에서 만나는 이유가 벌 때문은 아니지만, 종종 “양봉”에 대한 이야기를 하면 대화에 활력이 생길 때가 있습니다. 하지만 “벌 이야기”보다 더 좋은 것은 그의 벌들이 부지런히 만들어낸 자연 그대로의 신선한 황금빛 꿀의 달콤한 맛입니다. 정말로 맛이 있습니다!

이와 마찬가지로 살아 계신 말씀이신 예수님(요한복음 1:1-14 참조)을 경험하고 높여드릴 때, 성령으로 충만한 그리스도인들은 하나님을 존귀하게 하고 그분의 목적을 위해 살아갈 수 있는 자리에 든든히 서게 됩니다.

SWEETER THAN HONEY

If you want to bring a smile to Jarrett’s face, ask him about his bees. He’s an apiarist—a beekeeper. Though our meetings in his backyard are not about bees, it’s not uncommon for “apiculture” lessons to be a stimulating part of our conversations. But even better than “bee talk” is the nature-fresh, sweet taste of the golden-colored honey produced by Jarrett’s hardworking bees. Mm, mm, good!

In Psalm 119:103, the psalmist exclaims, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Closer examination of verses 97-104 reveals that the “sweeter than honey” comparison is just one of several phrases the writer uses to accent the supreme value of Scripture: “Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts” (VV. 98-100). The bottom line is that wholeheartedly embracing what God has revealed through the words of the Bible situates us to live well in this world.

Similarly, when Jesus, the living Word (SEE JOHN 1:1-14), is experienced and valued, His followers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, are well-positioned to live in ways that honor God and serve His purposes.

한 가지 확실한 것

추운 기후에서 자라는 나무는 “경화”의 과정을 통해 겨울을 준비합니다. 나무 세포에서 물이 빠져나가게 해서 세포가 얼지 않고 부피가 늘어나지 않아 나무가 터지지 않도록 합니다. 세포 사이에 남아 있는 물은 얼음 결정이 달라붙을 수 없을 만큼 순수합니다. 그러면 나무는 영하 40도의 온도에서도 부러지지 않고 견딜 수 있습니다. 나무는 매년 같은 시기에 경화되며 이는 해가 짧아지는 정해진 일정에서 오는 신호를 받기 때문입니다. 날씨가 예외적으로 따뜻해져도 나무는 자기의 생명을 날씨에 맞추지 않습니다. 나무는 유일하게 확실한 태양만을 신뢰합니다.

해를 만드신 하나님의 아들은 더더욱 확실합니다. “그는 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상이시요 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이시니 만물이 그에게서 창조되었고”, “만물이 그 안에서 함께 섰느니라”(골로새서 1:15-17). 누가 나무들에게 매년 언제 경화해야 하는지를 알려주나요? 매일 아침 해를 뜨게 하고, 매일 밤 해를 잠자리에 들게 하며, 달을 가지고 조수를 흐르게 하고, 모든 세포 안에서 전자를 회전시키고, 우리의 심장을 뛰게 하고 폐를 숨쉬게 하며, 우리의 마음이 아플 때 붙잡아 주시는 바로 그 아들입니다.

세상을 돌아가게 하는 것은 자연 내부의 어떤 힘이 아니라 밖에 계신 한 분이십니다. 그분은 당신을 포함하여 “만물이 자기와 화목하게 되도록”(20절) 그가 만드신 이 세상에 들어오셨습니다. 예측이 불가능한 이 세상에서 우리에게 한 가지 확실한 것이 있습니다. 예수님께서 당신을 “거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 그 앞에 세우실 것”(22절)입니다.

ONE SURE THING

Trees in cold climates prepare for winter through a process called “hardening.” Water drains from cells so they won’t freeze, expand, and burst the tree. The water that remains between the cells is too pure for ice crystals to attach. Its temperature may now drop to forty degrees below zero without cracking the tree. Trees harden at the same time each year because they take their cues from the fixed calendar of shortening days. They don’t stake their lives on the weather, which may be unseasonably mild. They trust the sun, their one sure thing.



The Son who made the sun is surer yet. He is “the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created,” and “in him all things hold together” (COLOSSIANS 1:15-17). Who tells trees when to harden each year? The same Son who makes the sun rise each morning and puts it to bed each night, pulls tides with the moon, whirls electrons in every cell, pumps your heart and inflates your lungs, and holds you when your heart is broken.

What holds the world together isn’t a force within nature but a person outside it. A person who entered the world He’d made so he could “reconcile to himself all things,” including you (V. 20). In this unpredictable world, you’ve got one sure thing. Jesus will “present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (V. 22).
